In 2004, management at Unimin's Gleason, TN operation began implementing ergonomic interventions specifically targeted to reduce risk of musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs). Together with corporate and site management, Unimin identified work site hazards and began to modify work practices/equipment. Some interventions were relatively simple and were implemented immediately. Others, like improvements to a mobile shredder, were more complex but were eventually resolved through a participatory approach with employees, management, manufacturers and NIOSH. This paper discusses ergonomic interventions that were successfully implemented using a bottom-up approach to reducing the risk of injury.

The modest mineral industry of Afghanistan continued to suffer adversely from internal disorders that were essentially the result of the continued presence of elements of the armed forces of the U.S.S.R. Despite press reports near yearend intimating that the Soviets might reduce troop strength in Afghanistan, there were no indications of any significant numeric reductions. Indeed, there were clear demonstrations of heightened military actions along the Afghani-Pakistani border, including bombing raids on settlement sites for Afghanis within the territorial limits of Pakistan, actions hardly demonstrative of conditions indicative of Soviet withdrawal.

A process was developed on a laboratory scale in which a solid waste byproduct from refining of secondary lead was converted into three valuable products. Roasted lead blast furnace matte was leached with water to recover copper. This was followed by brine leaching to recover lead. Residues were finally smelted to yield pig iron. Copper was precipitated as cement copper and the lead product obtained was a mixture of pure 3PbO.PbC12.xH20 and Pb(OH)C1. Copper recovery was 89 percent and lead recovery was 96 percent.

After a long series of laboratory and in-mine tests, a cost- effective, mineworthy, reduced-noise auger miner cutting head was de signed, fabricated, and field-tested by Wyle Laboratories under contract to the Bureau of Mines. Compared with standard auger cutting heads, the new heads reduced noise by 10 dBA at the jacksetter's position and by 6 dBA at the operator's position. This report contains detailed fabrication instructions, including engineering drawings, that show how a standard auger cutting head can be modified to produce a reduced-noise auger.

Twenty-two compressibility runs were made with helium over the temperature range -5° to 80° C and at pressures to 800 atmospheres. A Burnett apparatus was used. Data from the runs were fitted to a fourth degree polynomial equation of state in the pressure and a weighting factor of Pr-3/4 was used. All data for a particular isotherm were treated simultaneously. A temperature function was found to represent the parameters B and C. Compressibility factors determined by this investigation are believed to be accurate to better than 0.05 percent.

The Bureau of Mines conducted tests using a tracer-gas technique to measure the effectiveness of the jet fan, which is often employed in mines to ventilate dead headings. Results of these tests show that jet fans can (1) ventilate dead headings beyond the maximum penetration distance indicated by smoke-tube detection of air movement, and (2) redistribute available fresh air through larger working areas. However, if the fresh air base is insufficient, the fan will merely recirculate the contaminated air and disperse it over a larger volume.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 165 natural gas samples from 21 States and 1 foreign country. Of the total samples, 155 were collected during calendar year 1988. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1988. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

The Chesapeake Corp. tract comprises 174 acres and the Philbato property 58 acres."

The Rapidex continuous spiral blast tunneling concept uses a spiral blast pattern that provides efficient slabbing action, continuous progression, and partial self-shielding. A lightly shielded tunneling machine using this concept stays at the face to provide continuous drill, load, shoot, and muck functions. Previous phases proved the effectiveness of the blast pattern in the White Pine Shale tested the design features of the shield and developed a remote loading and shooting capability using inductively initiated blasting caps and a pumpable slurry explosive. Phase IV assembled previously used front-end elements (drill, loading components, shield) on a used Joy loader chassis and added a mucking system television monitoring and remote control elements. Remote television monitored loading shooting and mucking were investigated. Difficulty was experienced in locating previously drilled blastholes near the bottom of the heading and even on the face. These holes often had to be considered as lost. Because of hydraulic system deficiencies and overall congestion of machine elements at the face mucking rates obtainable with remote television monitoring were low (on the order of 16 tons per hour). Performance was good enough to indicate improved rates if more space were available and if extreme thoroughness were not required. Because of the serious nature of the lost hole problem, a new explosive loading scheme was given a preliminary evaluation. The new scheme would require the explosive and the detonating charge to be loaded through the drill steel. If the necessary equipment modifications could he made and if safe, efficient operation were assured, the new scheme would alleviate some of the crowding at the face and would eliminate the lost hole problem.

To concentrate coarse mica particles using a dry beneficiation technique. Approach Concentrate coarse, II berated mica particles using a Bureau-designed system of crushers, screens, and a two-stage zigzag air classifier. How It Works Because mica has a flat plate-like crystalline structure, mica particles are significantly lighter than blocky gangue particles of the same size fraction. Thus an air classification technique can separate the flat, light mica particles from the heavier gangue particles. The ore, which Is first run through a standard jaw crusher, a roll crusher, and a hammer mill to liberate the mica, enters the rougher Zig-zag section through a rotating air lock. See photograph and diagram of a 2-stage air classifier. Airflow through the classifier can be varied according to the size of the particles being separated. The gangue material falls through the airstream of the rougher zigzag section and is discarded as tailings. The mica flakes are carried by the air-stream to the cyclone shown on the right side of the diagram, where they are collected. This rougher mica concentrate is fed to the cleaner zigzag section through another rotating air lock. The mica particles are again carried by the airstream but they are now collected In the cyclone on the left side. The cleaner concentrate leaves the left-side cyclone through a third rotating air lock and is rescreened to remove under-size material missed by the first screening. The final product of this pneumatic process is generally a high-grade mica concentrate. A generalized flow diagram for the pneumatic concentration method Is shown In the second diagram.

The feasibility of locating a buried vertical magnetic dipole source (horizontal loop) from surface measurements of the vertical and horizontal magnetic field components has been investigated by Wait (1971). , For sufficiently low frequencies, the magnetic fields have a simple static-like behavior, and a single observation of the ratio and relative phases of the vertical and horizontal field components is sufficient for location when the earth is homogeneous. However, when inhomogenieties are present, the surface fields will be modified, and source location may be more difficult. In order to obtain a quantitative idea of the surface field modifications, we consider a spherical conducting zone as a perturbation to the homo- geneous half-space. A rigorous solution for the buried sphere problem has been formulated by D'Yakanov (1959). Unfortunately, his solution is restricted to azimuthally symmetric excitation, and even then the solution is not in a convenient computational form. However, if the sphere is electrically small and is located at a sufficient distance from both the dipole source and the interface, the scattered fields can be identified as the secondary fields of induced dipole moments. The latter are equal to the product of the incident fields and the polarizabilities of the sphere. The details of the approach are given by Hill and Wait (1973). Wait (1968) has used this induced dipole moment approach for scattering by a small sphere above a conducting half-space. The method has the advantage that it is easily generalized to scatterers of other shapes for which both the electric and magnetic polarizabilities are known, such as spheroids (Van de Hulst, 1957). This pamphlet and the enclosed video describe a safe, effective and economical method for removing dust from work clothes. Background Information Dusty work clothes can increase a worker’s exposure to respirable dust. Respirable dust is usually considered to be particles having an aerodynamic diameter of 10 microns or less and able to enter and deposit in the gas-exchange region of the human lung. A former U.S. Bureau of Mines report documented a 10-fold increase in worker dust exposure on a number of separate occasions from dusty work clothes.* It was found that once clothes become contaminated, they are a continual dust source until cleaned. The only MSHA approved method to clean work clothes requires a HEPA-filter vacuuming system which is very time consuming and difficult to perform effectively. Therefore, most workers use a single air hose (not MSHA approved) which can elevate dust levels for the worker, co-workers, and the work environment. A substantial amount of engineering technology has been developed that, when applied, can significantly lower respirable dust exposures of workers at mineral processing plants. But even with these improvements, some workers continue to exceed their permissible exposure limit. Elevated exposures increase the potential for developing debilitating or fatal lung diseases. ?e clothes cleaning method described within is an example of a continuing effort to reduce the potential for developing these lung diseases. Introduction This paper is a descriptive analysis of injuries and fatalities at small surface bituminous coalmining companies in Pennsylvania. The purpose of analyzing a specific industry sector and location is to identify issues that might be missed in a wider analysis. Other studies of small mine safety (e.g., Peters and Fotta, 1994, Randolph and Boldt, 1997) have shown that the relationship between safety and mine size is not a simple one. Some injury types occur at higher rates at small mines, while others occur at lower rates. Consequently, an analysis limited to a specific type of mining can help identify hazards and issues specific to that sector. The results of this analysis will be useful for directing training, intervention, and research efforts towards the most prevalent causal factors and incident types. Procedures and Definitions Data sources The primary sources of data for this analysis were files provided by MSHA containing information collected under Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations, Part 50. These files, commonly referred to as “Part 50 data”, are provided though MSHA’s Program Evaluation and Information Resources directorate. Two primary types of injuries were selected from the Part 50data: Fatalities (MSHA “degree of injury” code 1) and lost-time injuries, otherwise known as nonfatal with days lost (MSHA “degree of injury” codes 2 through 5). Lost-time injuries involve either actual days away from work or days of restricted activity or both. Fatality and lost-time injury incidence rates were calculated using the standard MSHA formula: Number of injuries per 200,000 employee-hours. Additional information on company sizes and mine ownership was provided by the Pennsylvania State University College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. Time span A five-year time span was selected for this study. More than a single year of safety experience is usually needed to capture a broad range of incident types. Many types of injuries, especially fatal injuries, can be extremely rare, and may be missed if too short a time span is selected. However, a time span that extends too far back may begin to suffer historical threats to validity. That is, incidents that occurred several years ago may be caused by hazards that have since been remedied or may be related to mining practices and conditions that no longer exist. A five-year span offers a practical compromise between these two concerns. Consequently, the MSHA Part 50 data files from 1993 through 1997 were used. The 1997 file was in “preliminary” form at the time of the study, so small variations from the final 1997 “close out” file can be expected. Based on past experience, we do not expect the close-out variations to have a significant impact on the findings.

This paper describes a method and a computer program for calculating shape factors and areas of channels that turn more than 90° and conduct fluids into the backs of wells. The program represents an improvement over a previous Bureau of Mines investigation by using a 4-point Lagrange interpolation equation instead of a 3-point and by summing areas of trapezoids with either x altitudes or y altitudes. Some of the techniques reported in this paper can also be used to compute the areas between contours and the lengths of lines that turn more than 90°.

Their purpose is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technologic information on mining methods and practices at various United States mines. The exploration, development, equipment, and mining of a large, oxidized-copper ore deposit by open-pit methods, the leaching of the ore with sulfuric acid solution, and the recovery of the copper as cement copper are described herein.

Measures that were taken to eliminate noise resulting from explosives work at the Bureau of Mines facility at Bruceton , Pa . , are described . A method for monitoring sound transmission characteristics of the atmosphere and control of the explosives testing is presented as a noise control measure that offered partial relief during the period in which the modifications were made . Design details of the replacement gallery , used for permissibility testing of explosives , and the modifications of four types of bombproofs are given . Operation of the closed facilities are completely satisfactory , and the noise problem has been entirely eliminated .

The Bureau of Mines, as part of an effort to maximize minerals and metals recovery from domestic resources, has investigated the feasibility of recovering heavy minerals as byproducts from sand and gravel, placer gold, and industrial mineral operations in northern California. Sand samples from about 50 locations were treated by gravity separation to yield heavy-mineral concentrates (black sands). Mineral compositions of the concentrates were determined by chemical analysis and mineralogical examination. Individual zircon, ilmenite, magnetite, platinum-group metals, thoria, and silica products were prepared from heavy-mineral concentrates by selective separation using low-and high-intensity magnetic, high-tension, and flotation equipment.
