Float dust deposits in return airways in bituminous coal and lignite mines present a special explosion hazard. Research is in progress at the Bureau of Mines experimental coal mine to evaluate the degree of the hazard and to develop measures for preventing dissemination of dust into the ventilating air current. To determine the extent of this hazard prevailing in operating coal mines, 711 dust samples were collected in 50 mines located in the major coal fields of the United States. The mean quantity of coal and the incombustible content of the dust in the samples were determined. The term "float dust" is used to designate particles smaller than 74 microns in diameter (particles passing a No. 200 sieve) which have settled from the air current. Dust usually found in roadways and in working places is coarser than float dust, and is termed "coarse dust" (particles passing a No. 20 sieve). Variations in amount and incombustible content of coarse dust in a midwestern mine were studied previously.

A conventional trailing cable connection box on a continuous mining machine was modified by the addition of two innovative devices. These are a pressure vent to preclude buildup of high pressure due to an explosion in-side the enclosure, and a grommet-type cable entry to simplify and speedup cable entering procedures. The innovative devices were evaluated for eight and one-half months in a working section of an underground coal mine. Laboratory tests before and after the in-mine exposure show no measurable change in the devices. Following the favorable in-mine evaluation, technical performance criteria were defined to serve as the basis of approval for the use of the innovative devices. Additional tests to measure comparable gripping of the cable by asbestos rope, substitution rope materials and by the urethane grommet-type entry were included in this effort. Also, literature for the last 80 years was searched. Comments are provided as to how the innovative devices comply with 30 CFR Part 18.

"In the United States there are hundreds of underground and surface (inside and outside) inclines at coal mines on which trips of cars are continually being run with coal, rock, supplies, and men. The safety of the men and prevention of damage to the slopes depend, excluding the personal element of the hoist-man, on the strength and condition of the wire cable, draw bars, and the couplings, and on the links of chains and pins as well. Within a recent period of four weeks there have been two runaway trips, one on the surface and one underground; it seems desirable to call attention of mechanical engineers and others at coal mines to the need for closer and more frequent inspection of the cable, draw bars, coupling links and pins, derailing devices, wheels, brakes, and other parts of cars or trips on which men are hauled on inclines. This bureau has never published anything on this class of accident heretofore.How frequently runaway trips occur is not known. If no serious injury or fatalit has to be reported to the State authorities, a number of such happenings may occur and not be mentioned outside of the immediate vicinity of the mine.Runaway trips can and do result in considerable loss of life, in injuries, and damage, either at or near the place of the break, or throughout a mine by causing an explosion of gas or coal-dust or both, This report is restricted to a study of the mechanical and physical phases of car trip construction and of the metal of couplings and ropes; derailed trips are not included and may be the subject of another paper. There is no need to mention gas accumulations, coal-dust and rock-dusting, open lights, protected power lines, and permissible equipment, because these have all been well covered in Bureau of Mines publications which have been widely distributed and partly or wholly reprinted by others.Most of the items regarding the runaway trips tabulated have been abstracted from reports made respectively by Clarence Hall, W.O. A complete list of permissible mine equipment , tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines previous to January 1 , 1947 , was published as Information Circular 7432.27 A list of permissible mine equipment tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines during the calendar year 1947 was published as Information Circular 7465.3/ The present list supplements Information Circular 7432 and includes all of the equipment approved during the calendar years 1947 , 1948 , and 1949. It therefore supersedes Information Circular 7465. The list also includes an appendix ( No. 2 ) giving the symbol that must be used by every cable manufacturer in marking trailing cables that have passed the test for flame resistance as stated in the amendment of October 21 , 1947 , to Schedule 2E . The items are numbered to indicate the consecutive order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification . Thus , Information Circular 7432 showed six air compressors on the active list ; five additional compressors , Nos . 7 to 11 , inclusive , in this category were approved during 1947 , 1948 , and 1949 . Several items that were listed in Information Circular 7432 have been repeated in this circular where it was necessary to show that approvals of such equipment were extended to cover an additional voltage rating or other changes . Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found , upon inspection and test , to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal -mining industry . The use of such equipment in mines known to be gassy , as well as in those that may become so , is earnestly recommended in the interest of safety . This circular is published so that the industry may be kept informed as to the many types of machines , devices , and lamps that are available for reducing explosion and other hazards incident to coal mining . This circular and Information Circular 7432 give the complete list of permissible mine equipment that is available under the various classifications .

The consumption of gasoline in the United States varies materially with the seasons; during some of the summer months it exceeds the rate of production and in the other seasons the production of gasoline exceeds the consumption, The usual practice of the larger refiners is to store surplus stocks during the winter season in order to meet the heavy demands during the summer months. This paper, describing the operation of the Gifford Hill & Co. plant at Hoot Spur near Texarkana, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining and preparing gravel and sand throughout the United States. These tapers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Although the publication of total costs might not be advisable in some instances yet a knowledge of operating costs is essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The plant described combines some features of dredging and some of dry-pit operation, as material is excavated in a dry pit with a drag line, hauled to the plant in standard-gage cars, and then pumped. This operation should be of special interest to operators whose deposits contain a large quantity of clay.

[Rock bursts are phenomena associated with mining operations, particularly with deep mining, although they occur throughout a wide rump, of depth, from 600 feel downward. The intensity is usually in direct proportion to the depth, varying from a loosening and sloughing off to a violent rupture, giving rise to the term, "explosive rock." The more or less violent breaking of rock in mine working, tins been variously designated as " flaking," "pressure hoists," "strain bursts," "bumps," "quakes," and "air blasts," which indicate opinions as to cause and effect. The term "air blast" lots probably beat most widely used, and naturally so, as a more or less rapid movement of air often accompanying the more violent phenomena of rock failure. Furthermore, there is an implied if not definitely expressed degree of magnitude in the action designited by a given term and in the cause and character of the action. For example. flaking, pressure bursts, and quakes are terms ranged to indicate action of increasing magnitude; and pressure bursts, strain bursts. bumps, and quakes are ranged according to the cause and character of the action.]

To determine the availability of aluminum from world bauxite resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated 139 bauxite deposits worldwide and evaluated the potential production of aluminum based on the demonstrated resources of bauxite ore from 91 mines and deposits in 22 market economy countries. The demonstrated resources of the bauxite mines and deposits included in this study represent an in situ resource of 20.2 billion metric tons of bauxite. Total identified bauxite resources in market economy countries amount to roughly 31.9 billion tons. Of the demonstrated resource, some 18.8 billion tons of bauxite considered minable provide a production potential of 3.6 billion tons of primary aluminum. Given the wide geographic distribution of bauxite deposits, stable supplies of bauxite for aluminum production seem assured well into the next century. However, a tight market situation could develop during the 1990's unless the real price of aluminum increases enough to stimulate massive new investments in production capacity, particularly in refining and smelting. This study indicates that a real price of at least $0.85 per pound (in January 1980 dollars) would be necessary to stimulate the required investments and provide a sufficient rate of return on invested capital.

The rapid determination of uranium in ores by radiometric means was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Among the various procedures and schemes tested, two showed most promise. They were the ratio scheme developed in the Bureau's Tucson, Ariz., laboratory and the equilibrium method developed by the Canadian Department of Mines and Technical Surveys. The ratio method is a simple, empirical procedure for classifying the state of equilibrium in ores by measuring their radioactivity by means of a Geiger-Muller counter under three different conditions, using filters. The principal merit of the method is in providing a clue as to the reliability of equivalent uranium determinations.

This paper describing the methods of recovery and treatment of a sand and gravel deposit and the preparation of these materials for a number of special markets is one of a series being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. It is of particular interest to those sand and gravel operators who have a surplus of fine sand which must be sent to waste, both from the point of view of, equipment and the variety. of markets supplied, and in that it describes one of the few sand and gravel plants which have resorted to hydraulic classification for sizing fine sand. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to evaluate the effect of ventilation on the water spray patterns of automatic sprinkler heads. Experiments were performed in a rectangular tunnel with pendent, upright, pendent sidewall, and horizontal sidewall sprinkler heads at air velocities of 0, 150, 300, 500, and 800 ft/min. As the air velocities were increased, there were significant shifts in the total coverage areas, density distribution patterns, and the maximum coverage densities for all types of heads. The pendent and upright heads exhibited upstream shifts in total coverage in the direction of the air-flow ranging from 4 to 6 ft, while the downstream coverage distances were extended up to 14 ft at the 800 ft/min airflow. The shift in upstream coverage distance for the sidewall heads ranged from 6 to 12 ft, while the downstream coverage was extended up to 22 ft at 800 ft/min. The results showed that airflow can have a significant effect on the coverage characteristics of automatic sprinkler heads and needs to be considered in the design of effective sprinkler fire suppression systems for ventilated areas.

Research was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a well-point dewatering system in conjunction with a french drain to intercept waste impoundment leakage while reducing the volume of waste water requiring treatment. A well-point dewatering system composed of 585 production wells was installed around the perimeter of a leaking impoundment that previously used only a french-drain system for leakage control. The placement of the well-point system was designed to intercept and remove the leakage from the groundwater before the contaminant reached the french drain. Groundwater monitoring at this site revealed that after a period of approximately 40 days the well-point dewatering system had stabilized and effectively prevented the further spread of contamination to the french drain.

In connection with a Bureau of Mines research program on utilization of Cuban lateritic ores, a comprehensive review was made of the chemical literature on nickel and cobalt. Initially, the review had as its objective the selection, from the voluminous literature dealing with the chemistry of these two metals, of only those references to reactions that were especially pertinent, or at least closely related, to the field of extractive metallurgy. Later, the coverage was extended to include references to the techniques and plant applications of extractive metallurgical procedures for the recovery of nickel and cobalt. In this report, the period from January 1929 to July 1955 has been covered, as it seemed logical that recent literature should be of greatest value. This cutoff date was established in order that the bibiliography could be issued at an early date, inasmuch as currently much work is in progress on the lateritic ores. Later, a supplement will be prepared extending the coverage to about 1900.

Electrochemical machining sludge, a troublesome fluid waste product, was dewatered on a bench-scale basis by three alternative methods tested by the Federal Bureau of Mines. These methods would enable recycling 89 percent or more of the liquid content of the sludge and allow the dewatered solids to be dumped as landfill or processed further to recover contained nickel. Dewatering by vacuum precoat filtration was estimated to be the least expensive. Based on treating 20,000 gallons per day of sludge, precoat filtration costs were estimated as totaling 1.96 cents per gallon of sludge. Two options of an alternative method, comprised of acidification, reprecipitation, thickening, and filtration, were estimated to cost either 3.41 or 3.60 cents per gallon of sludge.

In response to the continuing problem of noise induced hearing loss NIHL among mine workers, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health NIOSH has conducted numerous noise surveys in coal preparation plants. The research, consisting of worker dose monitoring, task observations, and equipment noise profiling, was completed in eight separate preparation plants. Worker dose monitoring was conducted for three shifts in most cases. Workers experiencing higher than allowable doses were task-observed for one full shift to correlate dose to noise source(s). Finally, noise levels on all floors, and in lunchrooms and control rooms, were characterized. Results indicate that only workers who routinely spend a significant portion of their shift in the plants (away from the control rooms) are susceptible to overexposure from noise. Certain pieces of equipment (screens, centrifuges, sieve bends) are the loudest primary noise sources responsible for the worker noise exposures.

[A system of analysis for sulfur groups in petroleum distillates has been developed as one phase of the Bureau-of Mines investigation of the more economic utilization of the so-called "black oils" of Wyoming. This problem is being studied by the Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement with the University of Wyoming at the Bureau's Petroleum Experiment Station , Laramie, Wyo. Wyoming black oils have high sulfur and asphalt content and usually yield only small percentages of straight-run gasoline. A more detailed description of the properties of black oils has been given in a previous publication (3)3/. The preparation and properties of asphalts from those oils have been described (1, 2), and the effect of thermal cracking and the use of ordinary methods of treating wore discussed in one Bureau publication (4), Although these studies gave considerable insight into the properties and characteristics of black- oils; it was thought t that a more fundamental attack would assist-materially in, the problem of sulfur removal.]

The principle objective of the research effort described herein was to identify as rapidly as possible a practical trapped miner location system. Much effort has been expended in the past on the development of a highly sophisticated seismic location system [1] for trapped miners. Field tests of this system have shown that the location accuracy is limited by a combination of seismic velocity anomalies, timing errors, and in general by the relatively weak nature of the signals received at the surface. It was first felt that similar propagation anomalies would be experienced by electromagnetic systems, but to a greater extent than the seismic. However, preliminary tests performed by Westinghouse on the Operations and Maintenance Program, Contract No. H0210063 in 1971 and 1972, indicated that an electromagnetic solution to the location problem may be more feasible than a seismic solution. Thus a more concentrated effort was launched in 1972 and 1973 to more completely determine the feasibility of electromagnetic location systems for trapped miners. Two different approaches to the location problem were undertaken on this program: (1) A pulsed electromagnetic system was developed by the Special Systems Division of Westinghouse in Baltimore, and (2) a Continuous Wave (CW) System was developed by Westinghouse Georesearch Laboratory (WGL) in Boulder, Colorado. Part I of this report will deal only with the development and results of CW Location System developed by WGL. The CW Location System was field tested at three eastern coal mines and at one western hardrock mine. The maximum overburden depth penetrated during these tests was 990 feet at the Robena No. 4 mine near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. The earth conductivity at this mine was measured to be 1. 1X102 mhos/m, which combined with the deep overburden make this mine representative of expected worst case conditions for a coal mine EM location exercise.

The conditions under which the researches of the Bureau of Mines on petroleum and natural gas were conducted in 1952 were little changed from those indicated in the last report,2/ which dealt with activities during 1951, immediately after crossing of the 38th Parallel by the North Korean Army. Although only a small part of the program was classified in the military sense, there was a feeling of the clash of world forces which called for even cheer scrutiny of the research problems so that the emphasis could be placed without delay where the greatest needs for na¬tional defense seemed to be. The reports of the work accomplished were so directed as to have the greatest immediate value to persons charged with supply planning for the military forces and included information on the availability and characteristics of a wide variety of crude oils, fuels, and other petroleum products. Actually, the approach, direction, and conduct of the work do not differ greatly under the two circumstances, as has been pointed out in earlier reports; only the tempo changes.

This paper describing the mining practice at the Central-Eureka mine is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the United Staten Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The mining practices described in this paper are illustrative of the methods employed in the exploitation of comparatively low-grade gold ores under the extremely heavy and swelling ground conditions which occur in the Mother Lode belt of California. The Central-Eureka Mining Co. comprises a group of adjoining mines in Amador County near Sutter Creek. The principal mines of the consolidated group are the Central-Eureka, formerly known as the Summit mine, and the Old Eureka mine, which is also known as the Hayward Quartz mine. The group is situated in the most productive part of tae main Mother Lode belt, the 10-mile portion which lies between the towns of Plymouth and Jackson. The three largest producing mines of the entire belt at the present time are the Argonaut, Kennedy, and the Central-Eureka; these lie within a radius of less than 1-1/2 miles.

The waters used to waterflood the Wilmington oilfield were studied by the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the city of Long Beach, Calif. Increases in the pressure of the injection wells indicated that they were being plugged by materials suspended in the waters. This study was made to identify the suspended materials, determine their origin, and find methods of preventing their formation. The suspended oil-coated materials were iron sulfide, barium sulfate, calcium carbonate, clay, and sand (or silica). Results indicated that the sulfide, which was as high as 90 milligrams per liter, was the product of sulfate-reducing bacteria. The injection of ocean water increased the sulfate content of the waters in the petroleum reservoirs from 3 to 250 milligrams per liter, thereby furnishing sulfate for growth of the bacteria. The waters were supersaturated with barium sulfate. Laboratory tests showed that sulfide could be removed from the waters by adding iron at a cost of 1 to 2 mills per barrel. The solubility of iron sulfide and calcium orthophosphate in the injection waters was also determined.
