The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted research on methods to reduce and to measure diesel particulate matter (DPM) aerosols in underground coal mines. One objective of this report is to present findings from an investigation of the DPM reductions obtained by an engine-mounted integrated control system consisting of a dry system (DS) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Another objective is to present results from the usc of a size selective personal sampler to measure DPM concentrations in an underground coal mine. Bureau laboratory tests of the integrated dry system and diesel particulate filter (DS-DPF) have shown that DPM emissions can be reduced up to 97 pet with little change in gaseous emission concentrations. The DS-DPF is undergoing certification tests conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Subsequent to passing all safety requirements, it will be tested in an underground coal mine. A baseline survey of DPM concentrations and aerosol size distributions in a cooperating mine was completed in August 1988. A prototype DPM personal sampler was tested during this survey. Based on results from this test, an improved unit has been developed. This unit is scheduled for extensive field testing by MSHA in 1989.

By injecting natural gas through auxiliary tuyeres into the smelting zone of the Bureau of Mines ' experimental blast furnace in January 1959 , the investigators succeeded in reducing the coke consumption by approximately one - third that of the base period . This caused a 30 - percent increase in pig iron production with no increase in wind rate . The maximum gas addition in these experiments was 4,665 cubic feet per ton of metal produced . Sharp reduction in gas consumption occurred when high hot blast and high wind rates were used , although the gas injection rate in percent of air blown remained constant . As the heat energy produced by burning natural gas to carbon monoxide and hydrogen is much less than burning coke to carbon monoxide , greater blast temperatures were required during the test runs . The gases produced from the methane were , however , more effective reductants ; so it was possible to increase the production rate while reducing the total heat requirements per ton of metal produced . During a base period with an all - sinter burden , before introduction of natural gas , a coke rate of 1,484 pounds per net ton of pig iron was attained , using an average blast temperature of 1,518 ° F. Gas was introduced gradually over a two -week period until an average 7 percent of the air blown was reached . During this period , the wind rate was adjusted downward to maintain a constant flow of gas in the bosh . The production rate of the furnace remained relatively constant . The quality of pig iron, however , improved as the sulfur load on the furnace was reduced as a result of the substitution of gas for coke . Blast temperatures were increased during this period from 1,518 ° F. to 1,939 ° F. , when the maximum gas addition was reached .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is currently investigating the electrochemistry of mineral flotation. A significant need in this area is greater reliability of sensors. The USBM is testing electrolytic methods to clean and condition redox-sensing electrodes to improve the reliability and extend the service life of these instruments in the harsh physical and chemical environment of mineral processing slurries. A novel method for removing scale from fouled electrodes has been developed that includes anodic polarization to 1.2 V versus the Ag/ AgC1 reference potential, followed by brief potentiodynamic conditioning. Laboratory results show that this technique removes calcarious deposits from gold sensing electrodes and returns the electrodes to useful service within approximately 10 min. Mechanical abrasion to remove the scale is thereby avoided.

This paper describes the pumping operations at the Ajax, Cresson, and Vindicator dines in the Cripple Creek mining district of Colorado during the summer of 1936. At that time the three mines wore pumping 6,500 gallons of water per minute into the Roosevelt drainage tunnel. Cripple Creek is the most important gold district in the State; it has yielded gold valued at over $365,000,000. The mines engaged in pumping are among the largest producing properties in the district. The U. S. Bureau of Mines is engaged in many diverse programs for improving mine safety. Of particular interest to the Bureau are new and improved means for minimizing the hazard of fire which can be initiated by prolonged low energy electrical faults on trolley line systems. When a high energy fault occurs on a trolley line, wherein the current exceeds the magnitude normally drawn by legitimate loads, such as locomotives, then the circuit breakers at close-by power rectifier sets trip. Tripping of the breakers not only protects the equipment at the rectifier sets, but also disconnects the energy source from the fault and thereby minimizes the fire risk. However, the fault current is frequently of a level substantially below that required to trip the overload breakers. When the fault is a substantial percentage of the set level of the breakers, the energy dissipated by the fault is frequently sufficient to clear the system by rapidly burning itself clear. Such a fault is often short-lived and does not present as serious a fire risk hazard as a prolonged, much lower energy fault, wherein the energy level is too low to clear the system. The breakdown of a trolley line insulator, in which there was a 15 to 30 ampere fault to ground, would represent such a fault or illegitimate load and a substantial fire risk.

Data from oil well logs and core analyses were used to quantitatively evaluate formation porosity and water saturation of heterogeneous carbonates and to study the pore geometry and performance characteristics of cores from these formations. Logs and cores from the Madison limestone from 233 wells in three fields in the Williston basin were used in the investigation. A comparison of log and core analyses shows that log porosities are consistently larger than core porosities, and the differences are correlatable with core porosity ranges. Water saturations from logs are usually smaller than the corresponding core saturations by summation of fluids, but the difference is attributable to mud filtrate invasion into the cores during drilling. Petrophysical studies show that the low permeabilities and high residual water saturations in these reservoir rocks are due to their fine crystalline texture and complex pore geometry (heterogeneity). It is concluded that both log and core analyses must be used for reliable evaluation of these carbonate formations.

The coal reserve base is defined for coalbeds having sufficient thickness for underground mining within a depth range compatible with economic recovery. The reserve data are compiled by the Federal Bureau of Mines by updating and reevaluating previous estimates of the U.S. Geological Survey, State geological surveys, and others. Through the application of computer techniques, the tonnages are compiled by State, county, coalbed, and rank. Coal reserve base is allotted to sulfur categories by a statistical apportionment of data from available Bureau of Mines reports and records. The coal reserve base in those States east of the Mississippi River, minable by underground methods, is estimated to be 169 billion tons in coalbeds greater than 28 inches in thickness to a maximum depth of 1,000 feet. Excluding those coals in reliability categories other than measured and indicated, the underground reserve base includes 162 billion tons of bituminous coal and 7 billion tons of anthracite. Of the total, 27 billion tons contains 1.0 percent or less sulfur. Most of this low-sulfur coal is in the southern Appalachian area. Approximately 16 percent of the underground reserve base is without available analyses. Included in this report is a glossary of terms applicable to a classification system for coal resources and reserves. The purpose of this system is to provide a common yardstick for determining coal resources and reserves.

This report describes the results of a measurement and analysis program to characterize wireless radio transmission in metal/non-metal mines over a wide frequency range from 0.2 - 1000 MHz and over a variety of mine environments. Six mines were chosen based on the relative economic significance of their product to the U.S. economy. Mine types include oil shale, uranium, potash, lead/zinc, copper, and silver. Particular mines were chosen so that the group would embody the most important mining techniques. The results show that transmission at medium frequencies are optimum for wireless mine communications, in agreement with extensive testing previously performed by the authors In coal mines, and that mine-wide wireless systems are feasible with a minimum requirement for new dedicated wiring. At least one need for such a wireless system was identified in each mine visited.

Coal is a soft and brittle material. Drilling rates in the Pittsburgh coalbed using a drag bit exceed 3 ft/min at 2,500-pound thrust. However, maintaining the bit on a horizontal trajectory or parallel to bedding planes to attain lengths of 1,000 feet is difficult. This Bureau of Mines report presents a drill string configuration that can be guided through the coalbed. The angle of the borehole is measured periodically and by proper combinations of bit thrust and rotational speed (r/min), bit trajectory can be lifted or dropped to keep the bit in the coalbed. An example of a hole drilled to 2,126 feet is presented to show levels of thrust and rotational speed used to lift or drop the bit, the seemingly unexplainable events that occur, and the strategy used during drilling. Thrust levels during drilling range from 600 to 2,500 pounds. Hydraulic motors powered by a 30-hp, 440-volt motor provide ample power for drilling horizontal holes 2,000 feet long.

The annual survey of the fuel-briquet industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 21 fuel-briquet plants in 11 States were in operation and reported production in 1956. The demand for fuel briquets in the United States has gradually declined since 1948, and the number of operating plants has decreased from 36 to 21. Also, the annual productive capacity of the industry has decreased, although not a proportionate amount because most of the plants that were abandoned were small and in most instances had a designed capacity of less than 25,000 tons per year. In 1956 the 21 active plants had an annual capacity of 3.7 million tons (table 2), which was only 20 percent less than the total capacity of the 36 plants in 1948. This indicates that most of the larger plants have remained active, even though operating at reduced rates, and the average capacity of the industry has increased from 130,000 tons per plant in 1948 to 177,000 tons in 1956. Since 1948 operating rates have decreased from 67 percent to 41 percent of annual capacity.

Accurate flammability and ignitability data for chemicals form the cornerstone of procedures used to assess the hazards associated with commercial chemical production and use. Since 1967 the ASTM E27 Committee on the Hazard Potential of Chemicals has issued numerous, widely used consensus standards dealing with diverse testing and predictive procedures used to obtain relevant chemical hazard properties. The decision to issue a standard rests solely with the membership, which consists of representatives from industry, testing laboratories, consulting firms, government, academia, and instrument suppliers. Consequently, the procedures are automatically relevant, timely, and widely applicable. The purpose of this paper is to highlight some of the widely used standards, complemented with hypothetical but relevant examples describing the testing strategy, interpretation, and application of the results. A further goal of this paper is to encourage participation in the consensus standards development process. The paper is published in two parts. The first part (in the preceding issue of Process Safety Progress) dealt with the E27 standards pertaining to thermodynamics, thermal stability, and chemical compatibility. The locomotives in service on the railroads of this country consume more than one-fifth of the total coal production of the United States. The amount is so large that any small saving that can be made effective in locomotive practice at once becomes an important factor in conserving the fuel supply of the nation. For this reason the United States Geological Survey gave attEmtion to the special problems of combustion in locomotive boilers. It approached this task from several different directions. The facts presented herewith constitute one series of results. In the fall of 1906 the locomotive-testing laboratory of Purdue University, at Lafayette, Ind., entered on a series of tests, one purpose of which was to determine in precise terms the degree of efficiency with which a modern high-class American locomotive utilizes the heat energy of the fuel supplied to it. The general interest in the subject, the elaborate plans which had been formulated for conducting the work, and the substantial character of the support which had been pledged to maintain it justified the Geological Survey in aiding the investigation. a The cooperation of the Survey consisted in detailing experts to assist the regular staff of the laboratory in the chemical and calorific work of the tests. These experts, working under the general supervision of the director of the Purdue laboratory, became responsible for the sampling of smoke-box gases, of the fuel used, of the cinders caught in the front end, of the sparks discharged by the stack, and of the refuse caught in the ash pan. The gas analyses were made by them at the university laboratory. The analyses of all solid samples and the calorific tests of the fuels were made at the government fuel-testing plant at St. Louis. The representatives of the Survey were not concerned with other phases of the work.

The 22d annual survey of the packaged-fuel industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 26 plants in 8 States were in operation and reported production in 1956. The demand for packaged fuel in the United States has declined gradually since the end of World War II, and the number of operating plants has decreased from 70 in 1946 to 26 in 1956. Annual productive capacity of the industry has decreased also during this period, and the decrease in capacity was about proportional to the decrease in operating plants. Packaged-fuel plants are relatively small, and 85 percent of the active plants in 1956 had an annual capacity of less than 10,000 tons. The same situation prevailed in 1946, when 84 percent of the plants had a capacity of less than 10,000 tons. Total capacity for the 26 active plants in 1956 was 174,600 tons, an average of 6,715 tons per plant. Operating rates in 1956 were the highest since 1951, and the rate of production for the industry averaged 37 percent of capacity.

From the first discovery of oil in southwest Ouachita County in 1920 to December 31, 1930, a total of 480,167,5604/ barrels of crude petroleum has been produced from' this region. Development of the Arkansas fields proceeded rapidly after 1920. The El Dorado field was discovered in Union County in 1921. Drilling in Ouachita County resulted in the discovery of the Smackover field in 1922 and subsequently in the development of the whole southern area. To November 31, 1939,459 / producing wells had been drilled in 25 fields, aggregating 53,7356 acres of proved territory in 6 counties. Peak annual production for the State was reached in 1925, when 80,823,7007/ barrels was produced, resulting largely from flush production from the Smakover field, which rose td an average of 444,9507 barrel daily during that year. The Bureau of Mines developed methods for fragmenting oil shale formations with chemical explosives to prepare oil shale for in situ retorting and to evaluate the extent of fragmentation by various methods. A combination of three methods of explosive fracturing was used: (1) The displacement and detonation of a liquid chemical explosive in a natural fracture system; (2) the use of 60-pct dynamite to relieve stress conditions of the rock around the wellbore; and (3) the use of pelletized TNT in a series of wellbore shots to fragment the oil shale. An attempt was made to seal or grout around the fragmented oil shale by drilling 67 holes and displacing approximately 200 bbl of neat cement in the fracture system to aid in evaluating the fragmented zone, Seven methods were used to evaluate the fragmented zone. The primary evaluation method was the recording of seismic waves to delineate the fragmented zone with results based on arrival time, amplitude, and record quality. The data from the seismic measurements indicated the extensively fragmented zone was approximately 95 ft in diameter and 70 ft thick. Results of the remaining methods of evaluating fractures--including air-flow tests, coring of the expected fragmented zone, elevation measurements to indicate overburden crowning, and surveys with high-speed camera, impression packer, and down-hole camera--agreed with and supported the data from seismic measurements. Further field application of explosive fracturing and evaluation methods is needed to determine when a zone of oil shale is effectively fragmented for efficient in situ retorting.

This report describes fluidized bed techniques employed by the Bureau of Mines at Minneapolis to differentially sulfatize the manganese in two samples of low-grade manganiferous ferruginous carbonate slates from the Cuyuna Range district, Minn. Suitable mechanics of operation were established. A space rate of 1.25 to 1.5 fps, a retention time of 3 to 3.5 hours, a temperature of 700° C, and a 10 percent sulfur dioxide gas in air were adequate for sulfatizing the slates by fluidization. Under these conditions the overflow product removal rate from the 4-inch-diameter reactor was 4 to 5 pounds per hour. The sulfur dioxide was used more efficiently in the two-stage treatment than in the single-stage treatment. However, approximately 80 percent of the manganese was converted to sulfate by either treatment.

This report summerizes the various studies made to determine the size and support of roofs in the upper shale formation, White Pine Copper Mine, Michigan. These studies were a cooperative effort of the White Pine Copper Company and the Federal Bureau of Mines. Before this investigation, the upper shale formation had been found to contain about 30 to 40 percent of the total mineralization in the ore zones. Investigators estimated that this shale could be economically mined by room-and-pillar methods, provided that the roof would stand over spans of 25 to 32 feet. The problem remained to determine the number of bolts required to safely support these spans. Unbonded fractures in the roof structure of the deposit complicated the use of laboratory methods for determining bolted roof support. Therefore, a method was devised to determine the in-place support which would consider the unbonded fractures. In this method the roofs of 3 rooms with spans of 20, 28, and 36 feet were intentionally overbolted as the rooms were mined. Following stability tests that sometimes exceeded 6 months, the bolts were selectively removed and roof sag, roof strain, and changes in bolt loads were measured concurrently. The number of bolts required for support of these spans was computed from these data.

This report summarizes the results from the first year of an anticipated multiphase program to develop improved coal mining equipment which utilize the CAVIJET? cavitating water jet method. This laboratory parametric study demonstrated the advantages of cavitating jets over non­cavitating jets in cutting coal, by producing comparable slot depths at one-fifth of the operating pressure, at better than one-half of the spe­cific energy. These results suggest that CAVIJET-augmented mining devices can be developed with compact, low-pressure pumps. Thus, CAVIJET should be capable of operating with safer, lighter support equipment, while providing all of the advantages (reduction of dust and sparks, reduced damage to cutters) of conventional hydraulic mining methods.
