This is a progress report summarizing more than 5 years of a long-range Bureau of Mines research program. The purpose of this program has been to investigate the fire and explosion properties of Green River oil shale in the Bureau's Experimental Mine, in laboratories, and in the field. The lean limits of explosibility of oil shale dust, by small-and large-scale tests, are reported as a function of grade, ignition source, and particle size. A limited number of laboratory tests on the autoignition of oil shale dust layers and the spontaneous combustion tendencies of oil shale are described. Moderate-scale rubble fire tests were conducted to determine flame spread rates as a function of ventilation flow. With the aid of a system to continuously monitor methane emissions in a deep oil shale mine, the characteristics of the methane flow are reported as a function of ventilation and blasting procedures, and are compared with gas yields from core samples. Tentative predictions as to the emission of the methane to be expected in deep oil shale mines, far from the outcrop, are offered. Brief reference is made to a parallel investigation into the fire and explosion hazards of oil shale mining and processing by a Bureau contractor; detailed results of the latter investigation are to be found in the contractor's reports.

This report covers Phase V of .a continuing program to apply a new liquid membrane process called coupled transport to the recovery pf metals from hydrometallurgical leach solutions. During this phase of the program, a membrane system of moderate scale was constructed and field-tested at the Exxon Highlands Mine and Mill Co. site near Douglas, Wyoming. The test unit contained four hollow-fiber membrane modules, each with 100 ft2 of membrane area. In the field tests, about 1000 gallons per day of leach solution was processed. The unit was operated on the leach solution for about 50 days. Leach solution entering the unit contained 100 ppm uranium. This concentration was reduced to about 5 ppm by coupled-transport treatment, and the uranium was concentrated to about 2 wt% as a uranyl carbonate product. Under these conditions, a transmembrane uranium flux of about 2.5 lb/ft2-year was obtained. An economic analysis showed that the cost of recovering uranium from this leach solution via coupled trans-port is about $1.20/lb. At higher concentrations of uranium in the leach solution this cost is reduced. For example, at 1000 ppm the cost of uranium recovery is about $0.30/lb.

An investigation was conducted to study possible sources of Utah refractory and structural clays that could be used for the manufacture of refractories and light or buff burning heavy-clay products. A field study was made and the clay samples tested to determine their firing characteristics. Results of the Bureau's work indicate many small noncommercial deposits of hypogenic clay occur in igneous rocks. Commercial hypogenic deposits are mostly halloysite clay developed by hydrothermal replacement of limestone. The high firing shrinkage of halloysite precludes its use as a refractory, however, halloysite produced at the Dragon Mine south of Eureka, is used for making oil catalysts. Clays and shales suitable for low heat duty refractory products are found in the Manning Canyon shale, in shales associated with coal bearing rocks, and in the Dakota formation. Some of the clays from the Dakota formation are also suitable for high-duty refractory products.

"The economic features of coal mining must take into account the drain on the man power. Study over a recent 5-year period reveals an average yearly loss of 2,125 underground men, of whom 1,182 are killed by falls of roof and coal, and according to recent data compiled by the Bureau of Mines it is estimated that 54,000 men sustain lost—time disabling injuries from the same cause.Under normal activity of the mines approximately 50 lives are taken by falls of roof during every 10 days the mines are operated, or 5 persons are killed per day, which, at a compensation charge of $5,000 each, amounts to $25,000 per day. Add to this the similar number killed by causes other than by falls of roof and we have $50,000 as an approximate daily fatality charge for each day the mines operate. On the basis of 200 working days per year, this amounts to the alarming figure of $10,000,000 annually. An investment at 5 per cent to yield this amount would require $200,000,000, which is equivalent to a capital investment of $0.40 per ton of coal, produced annually, on the basis of 500 million tons. These figures apply only to fatalities for which a fixed or stated amount is paid for compensation and do not include the compensation and hospitalization paid for the approximately 103,000 upon whom idleness is enforced by a lost-time disability injury. In one State having an annual production equal to approximately 30 per cent of the total bituminous production of the United States, the most recent data shows that for each fatality there are eight serious injuries causing 60 days or more lost time. The frequency rate of accidents for that State is less than the average for the United States, and so a conservative comparison may be made by using the figures of that State in estimating the total serious injuries, which gives 16,000 as losing 60 days or more. The average number of underground employees in the coal mines of the United States for the past 10 years has been approximately 570,000; the annual underground fatalities amount to approximately 2,000 and non-fatalities to 108,000, or a total of 110,000, which means that one out of every 5.17 employees ,or 19.3 per cent, receives an injury which results in either a fatality or a lost-time disability; this figure in a little over five years will reach a number equivalent to 100 per cent of all underground workmen. Against this is the record of many miners who have worked 25 years or more without a lost—time disability injury, indicating that coal mining is not necessarily productive of injury or death to workers.In the matter of falls of roof, it is found that 85 to 87 per cent of all fatalities occur at the working face, face of a room or entry, or in pillar work. It is at the working face that the greatest roof hazards are encountered, and when about 75 per cent of the underground employees spend approximately 90 per cent of their working hours at the face, it is logical that there is where injury is most likely to occur.Although the roof hazards may vary in different beds of coal, experience has proved that roof hazards can be successfully controlled in all coal mines, essentially regardless of the character of the roof if constant care and attention are given by the management and employees in applying the principle of safety. In almost every mining district some companies maintain an extremely low frequency rate of injury, whereas in the same district with essentially the same roof conditions the opposite is true.A study has recently been made of a number of reports upon fatalities in one district of one of the principal coal—producing States and it showed that 50 lives had been lost at 23 mines as the result of falls of roof or sides. These reports were made by the mine officials, safety engineers, and safety committees and an attempt was made to give both the cause and the person or factor responsible for the fatality. This paper summarizes precent knowledge of the ignition qualities of pure hydrocarbons likely to be present in modern Diesel engine fuels, as shown by an extensive search of the technical literature. The report also discusses the possible significance of cetane number and hydrocarbon struc- ture. Cetane or cetene numbers, and other physical properties, are tabu- lated for about 100 hydrocarbons, and a bibliography is appended. In recent years the Diesel engine has enjoyed increasing popularity due to its dependability, inherent characteristics of fuel economy, and the fact that it operates on a fuel that hitherto has been available in comparatively large quantities at a low price. These qualities have en- abled the compression-ignition engine to compete very favorably with other types of prime movers in many fields and have led to predictions of fur- ther rapid expansion in the application of Diesel power. In a survey of the field of all petroleum fuels for combustion engines, Holaday et al (9) have predicted that by 1948 railroads will be using 10 times as much Diesel fuel as was used in 1939 and that over-all consumption will have doubled that of 1939. Other estimates of the yearly demand for Diesel fuels five years hence vary from 2,6 to 5 times the amount used in 1944. Into this picture has come the question of whether the greatly in- creased production to meet this estimated demand is compatible with the maintenance and possible improvement in quality of fuels necessary to satisfy future engines. Unfortunately perhaps for the Diesel engine, factors other than those of simple arithmetical multiplication must be considered. For example, the consumption of oil in central heating plants doubled from 1935 to 1943, and a further increase of 57 percent of the 1943 demand is expected by 1950. Jet propulsion has been developed to the stage where it is entirely practical for military aircraft. Catalytic cracking plants, many of which were constructed to meet the war- time accelerated demand for high-octane gasoline, are taking their place in the refining industry. All these developments, as well as the Diesel engine, require material of approximately the same boiling range. Virgin gas oils make excellent burner fuels, perform most satisfactorily in the gas-turbine units for aircraft according to present information, and are at a premium as catalytic cracking stock.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory-scale investigation of grouting mixtures containing iron or aluminum to determine the existence of health or explosion hazards, due respectively to oxygen depletion or hydrogen emission. Mixtures containing iron created an oxygen deficiency in less than 24 hours and released small amounts of hydrogen; a health hazard could occur but only under extremely unfavorable conditions. Mixtures containing aluminum released little hydrogen and consumed little oxygen; however, if improper on-site mixing yielded high local metallic aluminum concentrations, enough hydrogen might be released to produce an explosive atmosphere in a confined space.

Reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, from State mine inspectors, for November, 1930, showed that 219 men were killed in the coal mines of the United States during the month, an increase of 25 over the previous month and 33 over November, 1929. On the other hand the production of coal decreased, the output of 43,329,000 tons in November being 8,397,000 tons less than in October and 9,005,000 tons less than in November a year ago. The larger number of fatalities accompanied by a smaller output of coal resulted in a higher death rate4 per million tons in November than in the same month last year or in October, 1930. The November rate was 5.05, as compared with 3.55 for November, 1929 and 3.75 for October, 1930. The increase in the rate for the industry as a whole was chargeable entirely to bituminous mines,, as the anthracite mines had fewer fatalities in November than in either of the previous months to which reference has been made. Reports for bituminous mines alone 'allowed that accidents at class of mines resulted in a death rate of 5.12, based on 195 fatalities and a production of 38,122,000 tons. This rate indicated an increase of 55 per cent over the rate for October, of the same year, and 72 per cent over the rate for November, 1929. The October record was 146 fatalities and 44,150,000 tons, and that for November a year ago was 138 deaths and a production of 46,514,000 tons. Twenty-four deaths occurred at anthracite mines in November, 1970: the output of coal was 5,207,000 tons, hence the rate was 4.61 per million tons. During the corresponding month a year ago there were 48 deaths and 5,820,000 tons of coal produced, which indicated a death rate of 8.25. In October, 1930, the death rate was o.34; based on 48 deaths and 7,576,000 tons.

The determination of moisture in coal is an empirical test, because the time, temperature, and equipment are specified. The essential features of the equipment and details of the procedure are given in A.S.T.M. Designation: D271-44.:2. According to the specifications, the following features should be incorporated in the equipment used: 1. Oven must have uniform temperature in all parts. 2. Oven must be constructed with minimum of air space. 3. Oven must have means of changing the air two to four times per minute. 4. Air must be dried over sulfuric acid (sp. f-7. 1.84). The analytical procedures governing most of the nation's coal purchases are those given in A.S.T.M. Standards referred to above. These standards are general arid of such scope as to cover all ranks and types of coal. In cases where only the moisture is required, a faster method than the standard procedure is desired.

This report covers the calendar year 1954 and has been prepared and submitted to the Congress of the United States in accordance with the provisions of Sec. 106(a) and Sec. 2l2(c) of the Federal Coal-Mine Safety Act (66 Stat. 692; 30 U.S.C. Sec. 451-483). Background The Federal Coal-Mine Inspection program was established to carry out the provisions of Public Law 49, 77th Congress, H. R. 2082, approved May 7, 1941. This act has since been amended to be known as Title I -Advisory Powers Relating to Health and Safety Conditions in Mines, under Public Law 552, 82d Congress, approved July 16, 1952, which also includes Title II -Prevention of Major Disasters in Mines. Public Law 552 is known as the Federal Coal-Mine Safety Act.

In 1939, the author made a survey of relative gravity in the Mediterranean-basin, 41° 35,5' to 41° 56.3' northern latitude and 0° 10,3' to 0° 28' longitude, referred to Mt. Mario. Ten stations were covered; 25 other stations had been occupied in the vicinity of Rome and in Albanian mountains during previous years. The new measurements revealed gravity anomalies ranging within the following limits: (1) With a free-air reduction, between + 29 and + 120 mgl., average + 60 mgl.; and (2) with a Bouguer reduction, between + 22 and + 87 mgl., average + 41.5 mgl. - V. "The Baboquivari mining district is about 60 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz., the present railroad shipping point. The values are silver and gold. The silver is largely associated with the black oxides of manganese. The ore is highly oxidized, and careful panning shows only a very small amount of pyrite. Our sample analyzed as follows:A flotation mill has been installed in the district, but it does not concentrate the precious metals satisfactorily. Our best laboratory flotation results were obtained by grinding to pass 65-mesh and floating with Xanthate or standard flotation oils plus sodium sulphide and polysulphide. This sulphidizing method gave a concentration of 32 per cent of the silver and 80 per cent of the gold, which about equals plant practice.We do not know of an instance where the oxidized forms of manganese have been concentrated satisfactorily by flotation.Plain cyanide on the original ore extracts practically all of the gold but only one-third of the silver. A preliminary deoxidizing roast, using producer gas or powdered coal, gives a calcine from which cyanide dissolves about 90 per cent of the gold and 75 per cent of the silver. This method of treatment, known as the Clevenger-Caron process, is described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 226.Preliminary treatment with sulphur dioxide by burning pyrite or sulphur and passing this gas into the pulp until all of the contained manganese is dissolved or changed in form best prepares the ore for cyanidation. The acid consumption will vary with the percentage of manganese and other soluble constituents. Neither gold or silver is dissolved by this acid treatment. The washed residue gives maximum cyanide dissolution of the gold and silver with minimum loss of cyanide,"

Rice, field engineer, represented the manufacturer of the stoker.PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATIONThe general aim of the investigation is to develop more economical methods of using fuel in kilns and to improve the over—all efficiency of the process of firing by methods that will produce ware of better quality. One phase of this investigation is the burning of coal on an automatic stoker to gain the advantages of control, constant rate of application of heat, and ability to burn cheaper coal than can be used in the hand—fired furnaces of kilns. It a stoker in to be used it is desirable that the coot of the installation should be low, the control of operation simple, and the distribution of heat in the kiln as good or better than with hand firing. These desiderata were sought in the stoker and furnaces that were used for the tests described herein. The tests were made to determine whether it is feasible to fire a large kiln with a single stoker, whether the use of a single furnace simplifies control, and whether the admission of all the hot gam at the center of the kiln will give symmetrical distribution of heat."

The Bureau of Mines, at its Rolla Metallurgy Research Center, has devised methods for separating and reusing the major portion of waste plastics discarded in urban and industrial refuse. Waste plastic concentrates from a local collection drive, recycling center collections, urban refuse pilot plants, and the secondary metals industry were separated into three major thermoplastic families--polyolefins, styrenes, and vinyls--based on differences in density using a Bureau-designed sink-float-elutriation hydraulic separator. Other separation methods and systems such as air classification, jigging, liquid media, screening, and electrostatics were studied. Vinyl plastics contain up to 50 percent HC1. It was found that over 90 percent of the HC1 in vinyls can be recovered as usable hydrochloric acid by pyrolysis at 350° C. The remaining pyrolysis products which had heats of combustion in excess of 12,000 Btu/lb, could become valuable as a future source of energy. A characterization study conducted on eight chopped wire insulation wastes from secondary copper and aluminum processors showed that most wastes contained 2 to 7 percent residual metal and large percentages of vinyl. The residual metal content of some of these wastes was lowered to 0.1 percent and the vinyl portion segregated using various separation techniques. The research also suggests ways in which reclaimed thermoplastics may be fabricated into useful products.

In sampling dust laden air by drawing the medium into an inlet, some larger particles fail to follow the air and a true sample is not obtained. Inertia prevents particles from accelerating with the air as well as from turning sharp bends; also the particles' weight causes them to fall relative to the air. An analytic solution to the sampling efficiency calculation by Levin gives particle paths and sampling efficiencies for various particle sizes when the inlet can be treated as a point sink. However, the flow field in the neighborhood of an aspirating tube is quite different from a point sink flow. Employing Levin's solution in the outer field, trajectories in actual flow fields have been calculated by computer to locate the critical trajectories separating the entering particles I paths from those paths where the particles hit the tube wall or escape. Sampling efficiencies are presented in terms of 3 variables--a dimensionless particle size coefficient, a dimensionless orifice size coefficient and the tube orientation--for the no-wind case. Over most of the range of sampling conditions, the Stokes drag law can be used and dependence on the variable--particle Reynolds number--can be ignored. A procedure for achieving maximum efficiency in design of a sampler is proposed. Whether these results apply when typical room-sized eddies constitute the ?calm air? environment is not known.

Helium used as a tracer gas in petroleum reservoirs continues to show great promise as a new tool for the oil and gas industry, according to tests conducted jointly by the Bureau of Nines and The Pure Oil Co. in-the Cabin Creek field, Boone and Kanawha Counties, W. Va. Helium, when used as a, tracer gas, is mixed with natural gas being injected into a reservoir for secondary recovery of oil, recycling, pressure-maintenance, or other purposes. Three separate experimental helium tracer-gas tests were run in the Cabin Creek, W. Va., field, wherein helium was added as a tracer to the natural gas that was being injected into the oil-bearing Berea sandstone. The results obtained in each test permitted determining the direction and rate of travel of the injected gas, calculating the volume of injected gas in the gas produced at the various wells, and determining the nature of the transition from natural gas to injected gas during a gas-injection program. Data were obtained on the effects obtained from waves of injected gab containing 1 percent and containing 5 percent helium and from a wave of essentially pure helium injected into the formation.

The available supply of fuel and power is a subject of importance at all times and particularly at this time. The following brief survey of fuel and power in the United States appraises the extent of the several primary sources of energy the approximate monthly demand, 1929-40; the chief centers of production and consumption; and shifts in the principal uses from 1929 to recent years. The period covers the boom year 1929, the years of the great depression, the more normal year 1937, the recession in 1938, the year 1939, and 1940 (which was affected by armament programs). In some instances, the data for 1939 and 1940 are preliminary. The four primary sources of fuel and power are coal, petroleum, natural gas, and water power. Wood fuel, important in some regions, and foreign trade in natural gas and hydroelectricity represent a relatively small part of the energy supply and are not considered in this study. The tonnages shown are in terms of coal, based upon the calorific or B. t. u. equivalents of the several sources of power. In practice, the usable heat or energy varies according to the type of equipment available for its use. For example, the efficiency of turbine water wheels and internal-combustion engines is much higher than that of steam plants and household-heating devices.

The development of commercial natural-gas reserves in the Michigan stray sandstone horizon of central Michigan during the past few years has resulted in expansion of the natural-gas industry in that State. The location of the natural-gas reserves of Michigan in the general vicinity of domestic and industrial markets is of economic importance, and in supplying these markets with natural gas a reasonable knowledge of, the extent and availability of the reserves is needed in formulating regulations for drilling gas wells and producing natural gas in analyzing the feasibility of projects to construct natural-gas transmission lines, in promoting and developing markets for the domestic and industrial consumption of natural gas, and in solving many engineering and economic problems common to the natural-gas industry. The development of the natural-gas industry in Michigan has been related closely to the development of oil production. The potential oil production of Michigan is comparable with that in most of the eastern oil-producing States. The development of oil production probably will continue, especially in the central Michigan Basin area; and as wells are drilled to deep horizons in the search for oil, more knowledge will be obtained of the gas reserves in formations above the oil-bearing horizons.

Scrap iron and steel attracted attention during 1937 because of the unprecedented exports and the concomitant agitation in some quarters to prohibit the exportation of this essential raw material except on license by the President. This report does not attempt to analyze the statistics given in the light of the controversy over the limitation of scrap exports, but it is believed that students of this problem will find many essential basic data in the various tables presented herein.
