"INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThis report supplements a previous report on work done in this same area 4/ but covers only the period from November 1945 to November 1946. The project was established in 1943 to investigate magnetite deposits in the northwestern Adirondacks by geophysical surveying and diamond-drilling for the purpose of increasing iron production in the eastern United States.In its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the primary objective of the Bureau of Mines is the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, that they may make the greatest possible contribution to our national security and economy. The policy of the Bureau is to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as possible after its conclusion. Maps showing the detailed magnetic surveys of the deposits and anomalies discussed in this report are on open file at the offices of the Bureau of Mines, College Park, Md., and at the University of the State of New York in the office of the Director of the State Science Service, Educational Building, Albany, N. "IntroductionThis paper on the kata thermometer is issued by the Bureau of Mines on account of the general interest in this instrument and the fact that it is frequently used in studies of mine ventilation conditions with regard to comfort and health of miners. It has been used in the studies being conducted along this line by the Bureau of Mines on the effects of high temperatures and humidities of air in mine working on the comfort conditions, as well as in studies of atmospheric conditions in mine, railway and vehicular tunnels.The study of the various physiological responses of the human body to different degrees of temperature combined with different percentages of relative humility in still and in moving air, now being conducted at the Pittsburgh experiment station of the bureau in the research laboratory of the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, cooperating with the Bureau of and the U. S. Public Health Service, presents an added opportunity of investigating the instruments that have been devised to measure atmospheric conditions as they affect the comfort and health of human beings.The ordinary mercury thermometer, as pointed out by Heberden3 almost hundred years ago is a very inadequate instrument for measuring the physiological effects of atmospheric conditions. It merely accounts for that part of the body heat lost by raliation and convection, while as a matter of fact greater part of the body heat resulting from the metabolic process within the body is eliminated by means of evaporation from the surface of the body."

The Bureau of Mines began a comprehensive investigation of the old lead diggings in the Wisconsin portion of the Upper Mississippi lead-zinc field in September 1947 to determine whether enough lead was present in shallow deposits to justify exploitation by modern open-pit methods. Because of the large number of areas of surface diggings, it was necessary to limit the investigation to only a few representative areas. Initial studies, therefore, included test pitting and hand auger-drill sampling at two sites n Grant County and one site in Lafayette County to determine whether further extensive sampling in that area was warranted. Results indicated that certain portions of the area contained substantial amounts of lead and, zinc; accordingly, more detailed sampling was undertaken, and the results will be described in a later report. Another phase of the general investigation was drilling and test pitting at the Nigger Jim Lafayette County. This 10 the third of the series and summarizes the work on the White property to develop the western extension of the Big Dick ere body, where four churn-drill holes totaling 679 feet were drilled. Inclusion of the White property in the study was justified because old reports indicated (1) production of ore from mines in the vicinity disclosed a high ratio of lead to zinc, (2) ore was present in the west heading of the Big Dick mine when it closed, and the attitude of the Big Dick ore body was such that a vertical hole would encounter ore that might be present.

"It is evident that the incidence of coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP) or black lung disease varies in different coal producing regions of the United States. Many people have hypothesized about the reasons for the differing occurrences. Because underground coal mining involves many mining methods under changing geological conditions, several factors may be involved in contracting CWP such as: the amount of quartz in the respirable dust, the trace elements in the respirable dust, the rank of the coal that produced the respirable dust (bituminous, anthracite), the amount and size of respirable dust, etc.Recognizing the uniqueness of underground coal mining and CWP, research investigations involving seam characteristics, mining system and worker position are being conducted in the center to establish standard procedures for characterizing some coal properties that may be involved in workers contracting CWP. This has been accomplished by the in-mine sampling of airborne dust at various worker locations and mining system configuration and by performing laboratory analyses of mined material (coal and rock) taken from the mines. (FIGURE 49 and 50)The investigations includes a method of classifying coal seams according to their potential to generate respirable dust. It includes statistical analyses of the size and locational variations of the elemental compositions of respirable coal mine dust in operating underground mines from seams located in the eastern, midwestern, and western United States, and is currently completing research which is investigating the relationship between the elemental compositions of respirable dust sampled near a continuous-mining machine and a laboratory-produced respirable dust."

FOLLOWING the rapid recovery of previous years, the U.S. economy continued the upward trend and moved forward moderately and sporadically during the first half of 1962. There was a slow-down in the recovery rate, which was especially notable in the third quarter. The economy recovered in the fourth quarter, and by the end of 1962 the gross national product amounted to $555 billion, a new high, 7 percent above that of 1961. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all achieved new peaks, but unemployment continued high and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to us~ its full potential; 1962 was a good year, but not good enough. During 1962, all industrial production climbed from the low in January to a high in late summer which lasted through the fall, and declined slightly at yearend. Mining production followed this pattern closely and most sectors were approaching record highs. Most minerals gained in value and volume of production. The steel-associated minerals group was the only exception, and it sustained a small net loss. The nonfuel minerals industry opened the year at a high level, maintained this high level until late summer, with the peak in May, and drifted downward toward the end of the year. The gains recorded by nonferrous metal mining partly offset the loss of ferrous metal mining, resulting in a small gain for metal mining as a whole. This report examines the boom arm vertical speed for roof bolting machines to study a moving boom arm appendage at different speeds during different work scenarios. The goal of this study is to determine the impact of the appendage speed on the likelihood of the operator's hand, arm, head, or leg making contact, such as touching the moving appendage. The overall research goal is to reduce workers' risks to injury from exposure to underground mining machinery. Accident investigation reports from the Mine Safety and Health Administration do not usually contain enough information to aid in studying this problem, and lab experiments with human subjects are not feasible because of safety issues. As an alternative, researchers used a unique computer simulation model that uses a virtual human, vision tracking, and generates random virtual human motions and risky work behaviors. By using specialized software to simulate the computer model, researchers accurately identified potential hazards of tasks where it is not possible to perform experiments with human subjects. Results of a frequency distribution analytic approach show that, regardless of other variables, contact incidents were always greater when the boom was moving up, always greater on the hand, and always greater or the boom arm part of the machine. The reason why the subject experiences more contacts when the boom arm is moving up rather than down is that more risky behaviors occur during drilling and bolting when the boom is ascending. Results of a cross-tabulation analytic approach show that the 25th-percentile operators experienced more contacts than other operator sizes and had most of their contacts during a boom speed of 13 in/sec. The hand-on-boom behavior during drilling and bolting tasks experienced more contacts than other work behaviors, and both tasks had most of their contacts during speed 13 in/sec. The 60-in seam experienced more contacts than other seam heights and had most of the contacts during speed 16 in/sec. For univariate logistic regression models, seam height is the most important predictor of the probability of a contact. However, a multivariate logistic regression model predicted contacts are more likely with the both-knee work posture in the 60-in seam, a 25th-percentile operator compared to a 55th-percentile operator, and speeds 16 and 22 in/sec compared to 7 in/sec. Results of a survival analytic approach suggest that controlling the boom speed is the most important factor in determining the risk of an operator making contact. Based on the data collected, boom speeds greater than13 in/sec result in a substantial increase in risk to the roof bolter operator making contact. Speeds less than or equal to 13 in/sec are associated with a more modest relative risk of making contact, which represents a decrease in potential hazard. Virtual operator's response time has little effect on the number of contacts experienced. The mining industry can use the information in this study to reduce the likelihood that roof bolter operators will experience injury due to contact with a moving roof bolting machine's boom arm.

A process was developed on a laboratory scale in which iron contained in galvanizers ' zinc dross and aluminum contained in scrap zinc die - cast alloy were removed simultaneously . Melting both types of scrap together in the proper proportions resulted in formation of solid intermetallic Fe₂ Alg , which was readily removed from the melt by filtration and centrifugation . Recovery was 87 to 92 percent of the available zinc . Refined filtrate contained 0.02 percent iron and 0.20 percent aluminum. Aluminum content was further reduced to less than 0.01 percent by fluxing with zinc chloride . Low temperatures employed and inexpensive equipment requirements make the process commercially attractive .

Studies were conducted to assess the potential of naphthenic acid as a fractional extractant for rare- earth mixtures and yttrium in sulfate solution . Naphthenic acid was an effective extractant , and separation factors were favorable in the presence of aqueous phase chelating agents . Addition of EDTA to the naphthenic acid extraction system resulted in average separation factors of 2.2 between adjacent yttrium- group elements , whereas DTPA resulted in average separation factors of 3.5 between adjacent cerium- group elements . EDTA was of value in separating yttrium from the rare- earth elements . Thorium and uranium were preferentially extracted over the trivalent rare- earth elements by naphthenic acid .

As a direct result of the second World War, consumption of nickel in the United States has increased to such an extent that it has been considered timely to investigate undeveloped deposits of the nickel minerals. Funds were made available to the Bureau of lines in 1941 to investigate the extent, occurrence, and quality of nickel ores in the Mirror Harbor area. The Federal Geological Survey mapped' and studied the area during the summer of 1941 and Robert S. Sanford, an engineer of the Bureau of lines, made a preliminary examination in June 1942. A contract for drilling the deposits under the direction of the author was let in July 1942.

In connection with the purchase of coal under specifications for Government use, the Bureau of Mines in this report has compiled data on 81 mines located in 15 States. This annual report lists analytical data on the composition and quality of tipple and delivered samples of coal collected during fiscal year 1973. Tipple samples were collected by Bureau of Mines engineers at tipples as coal was being loaded into railroad cars or trucks. Ultimate analyses are given for most of the coalbeds listed. The deliveries were sampled at destination in accordance with instructions issued by the Bureau of Mines. All samples were analyzed in the Bureau laboratory at Pittsburgh.

The Big mine has been a source of mica and high-grade felspar from separate zones in the same pegmatite dike since 1914. In 1943 it became the outstanding producer of strategic mica in New England. The urgent need for sheet mica led to core-drilling by the Bureau of Mines from February to May 1914. Nine diamond-drill hob's aggregating 1,474 feet in length were drilled by the Bureau of Mines with the objective of developing extensions of the known mica shoots. The use of large-diameter bits made it feasible to obtain reasonably reliable results in diamond-drilling this type of deposit.

An explosive or a blasting device enumerated in the permissible lists of this Bureau is not permissible in use unless it is properly confined with clay or other incombustible stemming.

Graphite in the Suffern deposits near Hillburn, N. Y., consists of flakes ranging in size from fines to one-half inch in diameter. The Bureau of Mines investigated the Suffern deposits in the spring of 1943. Gneiss outcrops were examined, and five trenches excavated and sampled. The graphite is not confined to any definite zone but occurs in small, local pockets. Eleven samples were collected and combined for laboratory tests. Tests by the Bureau of Mines indicate that the graphite ore can be beneficiated by stage crushing, "skin flotation" of coarse flakes, and wet flotation of minus 10-mesh flakes. Over 90, percent of the graphite was recovered.

Various methods of monitoring slip movements on bedding planes, as well as examination of rock burst damage in stopes, suggests that rock bursts in the Lucky Friday Mine are closely associated with these movements. Slip displacements along bedding simultaneously reduce the physical dimensions of stopes and increase compressive stress along stope margins. Such changes, in turn, contribute directly to rock bursts and the sudden failure of volumes of rock and cemented sandfill surrounding stopes. The distribution of seismicity and several mining-induced and premining structures resemble those described in South African gold mines. These suggest fundamental similarities in seismic sources and mechanisms of rock burst damage.

An experiment is described in which instrumented rock bolts were used to measure strain in the rock mass during drift development at the Stillwater Mine, Nye, Montana, USA. Two strain-gauged rock bolts were grouted into the middle of the rib next to the face. The drift was excavated in three advances, each one-half drift wide. Strains were recorded hourly by a data logger. Results show that the average change in axial bolt strain for the first and second advance was about the same and that there was almost no change in strain after the third advance. Bending strain was observed 19 cm from the head of the bolt.

Work in this investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to demonstrate how waste glass might be utilized to lower the required firing temperature and firing time of structural clay products. Mixtures of waste glass and common clays were formed by stiff-mud extrusion and fired to the temperature required to produce a body having 6 to 7 percent absorption. Substitution of glass for one-half of the clay in a red body reduced the firing temperature 500° F, which made possible a 30-percent increase in production; in a tan body, the firing temperature was reduced 400° F, which made possible a 23-percent increase in production.

Tests have recently been conducted by the Bureau of wines on the ignition hazard of exposing heated filaments of electric mine lam bulbs in an explosive mixture of methane and air. This investigation was undertaken in order to settle a question that had arisen in connection with the safety of miners? electric lamps. For several years, in view of former studies made by the Bureau and reported in Bulletin 524, the fact that the heated filaments of even low voltage, lour candlepower bulbs constitute a danger was generally accepted by the Bureau's engineers. These early tests, as well as subsequent tests, were conducted with Pittsburgh natural was as the testing medium.

The Iron Mountain tungsten deposits first were visited by a field party of the Federal Geological Survey in May 1942 while beryllium deposits in that district' were being examined . Later they were examined by F. A. Rutledge , an engineer of the Bureau of Mines , and an exploration project was recommended , work upon which began in March 1943 and was terminated in April 1943 after intensive trenching and sampling had been completed .

The two major lung diseases of miners are "blacklung" and silicosis. Blacklung, or pneumoconiosis, was first recognized as a disease of British coal miners in the 1600s. However, investigations into the cause of blacklung disease did not begin until the 1900s. The causative agent of pneumoconiosis in coal miners was thought to be silica until studies in the United Kingdom provided evidence that expo- sure to coal dust containing minimal silica could also cause pneumoconiosis. In the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) was defined as "a chronic dust disease of the lung arising out of employment in an underground coal mine." Diagnosis of CWP is generally based on chest x-ray findings and a patient's history of working in coal mines, usually for 10 or more years. In its early stages, CWP is called "simple CWP." Miners with simple CWP are at increased risk of developing an advanced stage of the disease, called "progressive massive fibrosis" pMF) or "complicated CWP." PMF (complicated CWP) is associated with significant decreases in lung function and oxygen- diffusing capacity. PMF is also associated with breathlessness, chronic bronchitis, recurrent chest illness, and episodes of heart failure. Coal miners with silicotic lesions or PMF have an increased risk of tuberculosis and other mycobacterial infections. PMF may progress even in the absence of further dust exposure. This disease is also associated with increased mortality (National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health [NIOSH] 1995). The most recent study to determine the prevalence of CWP in coal workers was in the mid- 1990s. The average prevalence of CWP was 2.8%, but for those with 30 or more years in the industry it was 14%. For the 10-year period from 1987 to 1996, 18,245 deaths were attributed to CWP. The most frequently recorded occupation on the death certificate (70%) was mining machine operator (NIOSH 1999). Silicosis may develop when inhaled respirable crystalline silica (quartz) is deposited in the lungs. The clinical diagnosis of silicosis is based on (1) recognition by the physician that the level of silica exposure is adequate to cause the disease, (2) the presence of chest radiographic abnormalities consistent with silicosis, and (3) the absence of other illnesses (e.g., tuberculosis or pulmonary fungal infection) that may mimic silicosis. The radiographic patterns are often the same for CWP and silicosis; thus, these diseases are sometimes distinguishable only by work history or pathological examination. Chronic silicosis commonly involves 15 or more years of exposure to silica. The characteristic microscopic feature is the silicotic nodule. Chronic silicosis is often asymptomatic and may manifest itself as a radiographic abnormality with small, rounded opacities of less than 10 mm in diameter, predominantly in the upper lobes. Lung function may be normal or show mild restriction. Chronic silicosis is also associated with a predisposition to tuberculosis and other mycobacterial infections and with progression to complicated silicosis.
