This report presents the concept, design, and testing of a sonic velocity monitoring system for the early detection of slope failure in open pit mines. The heart of the system is a device for producing reproducible sonic signals in rock. Because changes in the velocity of sound through rock near the top of the pit wall are a measure of extent and rate of fracturing of the rock, velocity histories obtained from periodic, automatic sonic velocity surveys provide positive information about developing slope instability.

To obtain beryllium metal of higher purity , flakes produced from electrorefining scrap metal were used as cell feed for a second cycle of electrore fining at 500 ° C in an electrolyte composed of 51.7 mole - percent LiCl , 36.9 molepercent KC1 , and 11.4 mole - percent BeC¹ · Metallic impurities in the flakes totaled more than 108 ppm , the metallic impurities in the metal obtained from the two - cycle electrorefining were , with the exception of 35 ppm of calcium , below the spectrographic determination limits .

The thermal reactions of l-methylindole were studied in the temperature range of 525° to 627° C in a flow reactor. The major products consisted of 2-methylindole, 3-methylindole, indole, quinoline, hydrogen, and methane. 2-Methylindole is formed from 1-methylindole by an irreversible isomerization reaction. The 2-methylindole isomerizes in a reversible manner to 3-methyl-indole, the equilibrium favoring the 3-methyl isomer. Indole is formed directly from 1-methylindole. Quinoline is formed from l-methylindole, 2-methylindole, and 3-methylindole.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a tracer gas method for measuring leak-age through permanent mine stoppings. In this method, a temporary brattice is erected in the same entry as the leaking permanent stopping. Leakage was evaluated from concentration measurements of a tracer gas introduced into the space between the stopping and brattice. Stopping leakages ranging from 15 cfm to 265 cfm were simulated in an underground coal mine. Leakage values determined by the new method were within 10 pct of the known values.

The Bureau of Mines, in a continuing effort to improve processes and methods of helium purification, has developed a differential distillation method for removing helium-3 from helium-4. Differential distillation at 4.2 to 1.6 K was used to reduce the helium-3 in helium-4 from about 200 to less than 1 part per billion. The results from four stills ranging in size from 1 to 25 liters are reported. The method has the potential to be adapted to commercial-scale separations.

Methane flows and pressures were measured in mines in the Pittsburgh, Hartshorne, and Pocahontas No. 3 coalbeds. From the data, the permeability of each of these coalbeds was computed. It was found to depend strongly on the type of coal and on the amount of water in the coalbed, and it was found to increase with time. All of the coalbeds had a high-permeability zone adjacent to the face or rib, and the Pittsburgh bed exhibited directional anisotropy. Surprisingly, little or no overburden effect was observed.

Ninety-seven roof bolts were instrumented with strain gages and resin-grouted in three areas of the Bear coal mine, Somerset, Colo., by the Bureau of Mines. Measurements taken with these instruments indicate roof support is achieved through a combination of point suspension and resistance to vertical and horizontal stresses caused by localized shearing in the roof. The localized shearing results in bending of the bolts, yielding due to high vertical stresses, and the transfer of high loads to the bolt head or plate.

"INTRODUCTION This paper is one of many reporting on various aspects of the Bureau of Mines program during World War II directed toward alleviation of shortages in certain critical minerals some of these papers are published as technical papers information circulars, and reports of investigations, of the Bureau of Mines or in technical journals.The investigation described in this report was begun as part of the Bureau, of Mines program to develop acid processes for the extraction of alumina from low-grade bauxites and clays. A domestic shortage of high-grade bauxite suitable for treatment by the Bayer process became acute as a result of World War II; and intensive search for a practical acid process using lower-grade alumina-bearing raw materials was therefore warranted.A survey of the various methods for extraction of alumina from clay has been presented in an early Bureau of Mines publication. 4/ The principal barrier to the successful operation of an acid process has been the difficulty experienced in developing a suitable commercial method for purifying the crude aluminum salts after the clay extraction is complete. Iron salts are the foremost contamination influence. A review of the more prominent procedures that have been proposed for separating iron and aluminum salts can be found in the well-known text on aluminum by Edwards, Frary, and Jeffries. 5/The majority of acid processes to extract alumina from clay employ sulfuric acid as the leaching agent, and the purification is thus reduced to the separation of iron and aluminum, sulfates."

The disposal of the brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas has long been a constant source of trouble to oil and gas operators as well as to farmers and stock-raisers in the vicinity of producing fields. The amount of oilfield brines Produced from wells on new properties may be almost negligible, but some older wells may produce several hundred barrels a day. A survey of almost 200 wells on 31 properties in the eastern part of Osage County, Okla., showed that during the month of November, 1928, the average production of water was 3.26 barrels per barrel of oil produced. The age of the wells included in this survey ranged from two to 28 years; the maximum amount of brine produced was 26 barrels of water to one barrel of oil and the lowest was one barrel of water to 27 barrels of oil. These figures apply to a small area. In other fields the production of water also varies widely; for example, in the Cushing4, Okla., field several yells were reported as having produced 100 barrels of water to every barrel of oil produced. Often the production of oil-field brines is decreased materially and the production of petroleum increased by the use of bottom hole Plugs and by a general repair and cementing of wells. The records5 of 22 wells cemented in the Gushing field showed that prior to the repair work, the average total dally production was 242.5 barrels of oil and 3,977.5 barrels of water. [Methods of distilling topped crude oils and distillates under vacuum, accompanied by good fractionation, have taken a place of major importance in the refining industry. In the refining of petroleum products it is generally desirable to produce a distillate of good quality, and this objective is attained by fractionation of a high degree. The laboratory and commercial practice have proved chat by varying the amount of fractionation the quality of the distillate car be changed, and refiners are cognizant of the advantages of good fractionation. Distillation-under high vacuum, however, is a relatively new practice in petroleum refining, and only during the last few years has there boon an indication that that this method ray become a general practice in the industry. Vacuum distillation offers many advantages over older methods of distilling petroleum products. Vacuum combined with steam distillation, for example, is replacing straight-stream distillation because the quality of the products of vacuum and, steam distillation surpasses that of those produced by straight-steam distillation. Although the injection of varying amounts of steam in a vacuum unit is common practice, the amount of steam used is becoming less as the vacuum within the unit is increased. This report describes tie construction of a visible-action laboratory batch still and fractioning; column and. gives curtain data pertaining to the operation of the apparatus under vacuum for the production. of lubricating distillates. Under authority of the Strategic Materials Act of June 1939, the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Geological Survey, began a broad program of investigation of the strategically important chromite deposits in Sweetgrass, Stillwater, and Carbon Counties, Mont. Extensive occurrences of chromite along the Stillwater Complex in Stillwater County were investigated. The two principal deposits, The Mouat-Sampson and Benbow mines, ultimately were developed and placed in production by the Federal Government. As a part of this general development program, the Carbon County chromite deposits near Red Lodge were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers in 1940, and by the Geological Survey .1-1 1942. The district was examined earlier by Schafer, and the Four Chromes area is mentioned briefly by Westgate. Although the Red Ledge deposits were considered to be of minor importance as compared to those of the Stillwater Complex, several of the ore bodies were adaptable to open-pit mining' methods, and one large deposit on Line Creek Plateau was readily accessible to the Red Lodge-Cooke highway. In 1941, the U. 3. Vanadium Corp. began mining crude lump-chrome ore from the deposit on Line Creek Plateau to supplement national stockpiles, which were being depleted by the rearmament program and the disruption of chrome-ore imports by the European war. Access roads gore constricted to Hellroaring Plateau, and the mining operations were extended to that area. A gravity concentrator with a capacity of 200 tons per day was built and operated at Red Lodge to beneficiate lower-grade ore from the district.

"PURPOSE OF TESTSThe propulsive strength4 developed by the Cardox blasting device depends on the thickness of disk, weight of heater element, and weight of carbon dioxide charge. It might be supposed that the maximum weight of carbon dioxide that can be charged into the shell should give the greatest strength. However, according to the ballistic pendulum, the maximum weight of carbon dioxide with certain conditions of heater and disk has less propulsive strength than a smaller charge; in one condition of test a loss of 39 per cent in propulsive strength was noted. It is therefore of interest to study the effect of the variables that determine the strength of Cardox.ACKNOWLEDGMENTGrateful acknowledgment is made to A. B. Coates, associate mechanical engineer who developed the testing method for measuring pressures in the Cardox shell.DESCRIPTION OF DEVICEThe Cardox blasting device as fully described by the bureau in Report of Investiga¬tions 2920 (1929), consists essentially of hollow—steel shell, cylindrical in shape, an electrode, valve assembly, shearing disk, and discharge cap. The shell is prepared for use by inserting a heater element, closing the open end with a shearing disk, and screwing in place the discharge cap. The charge of carbon dioxide enters the shell through the electrode.The heater element is fired by an electric igniter of the match—head type. The heat released by the heater element completely gasifies the carbon dioxide and raises the pressure of the gas until it is enough to shear the disk."

In studying the destructive distillation or pyrolysis of oil shales, the primary consideration is to determine the effects of heat on the organic components of the shale. The impracticability of separating these organic components, collectively known as "kerogen", from the mineral matter with which they are associated renders the problem extremely complex. The behavior of the kerogan in the shale while undergoing the heating process is probably different from that of the same kerogen if it could be isolated and treated under similar temperature conditions, and in fact the results of actual distillations have shown that the physical properties of the mineral matter in the shale may be the cause of much variation in the products of retorting. It must be remembered that the inorganic .material of the shale is a heterogeneous mixture of minerals solidified into a very close-grained compact mass. This mineral mass has a thermal conductivity different from that of the kerogen, thus complicating the problem of even distribution of heat. Furthermore, the temperatures of dehydration of gypsum end some; hydrous silicates are included within the temperature range of the shale distillation, These minerals are frequently present in the shales; and the evolution of water vapors from them will affect the partial pressures of the hydrocarbon vapors evolved from the kerogen, probably tending toward, the improvement of the quality of the oil distillates. Carbonates and sulphides which are also frequently present begin to decompose within this range of temperature, and the gases produced from them may alter the chemical constitution of the oils produced from the kerogen.

"INTRODUCTION Deposits of iron ore in Cherokee County, Tex., have been worked at various times in the pact, and the ore has been smelted in small local blast furnaces.Recently it was proposed to establish a charcoal blast furnace with a wood distillation plant to produce charcoal for fuel and byproducts. Financial assistance from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation was sought by George Easley and associates to enable them to purchase, move, and erect the furnace and build the required accessory plants. The furnace was to be moved from Pembroke, Fla.In August 1941, the Bureau of Mines was asked by the Office of Production Management to check the development work of Easley and associates and to ascertain (1) the iron-ore reserves, (2) the cost of mining ore and delivering it to the blast furnace, and (3) the grade and character of the ore. The Bureau of Mines was advised, while the investigation was in progress, that approximately 1,000,000 long tons of measured reserves would be sufficient to demonstrate the feasibility of operating the properties.Although deposits of iron ore are widely distributed in Cherokee County, only the Pryor Mountain, Banks and Cherokee, J. P. Acker, and Citizens State Bank tracts were sampled thoroughly by the Bureau of Mines. The iron-ore rights on these are owned by the New Birmingham Development Co., the Cherokee Development Co., or by individuals. Options to lease the ore rights were obtained by Easley, who obtained options on the Hawes Peach Orchard and Bradford tracts, also, which were examined only cursorily by the Bureau."

A list of permissible mine equipment approved by the Bureau of Mines before January 1, 1937, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6942.3/ Information Circular 7007,4/ published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved. Burin', the calendar year 1937. The present list includes most of the material liven in these two publications, as well as approvals that have been issued up to January l, 1940. Some equipment formerly listed has been omitted because it has become obsolete or is no longer actively marketed. The list now includes electrically-operated air compressors, coal drills, loading machines and conveyors, mining machine, mine ones, rock-dusting machines, room hoists, storage-battery gathering and haulage locomotives and storage-battery power trucks, mine telephones, junction boxes, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, electric flood lens, flashlights, methane detectors, and single and multiple-shot blasting units. The appendix at the end of this circular lists trailing, cables that have passed tests prescribed by Schedule 2D. When equipment passes the inspections and tests prescribed by the United Status Department of the interior, Bureau of Mines, in published "schedules" or standards, it is formally approved as "permissible" for use in gassy mines, and the manufacturer is then permitted to mark it with an approval plate that identifies it as having been approved by the Bureau. The inspections and tests are designed to insure that each equipment satisfies the minimum requirements for safety in use. On June 1, 2004, the underground coal mine ventilation safety standards under the Code of Federal Regulations (Title 30, Part 75) became effective for the use of a conveyor belt entry as an intake air course to ventilate working sections. These standards, also known as the Belt Air Rule, contained a section which limited the air velocity in the conveyor belt entry to no greater than 500 feet per minute unless otherwise approved by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration in the fire suppression system section of a mine?s ventilation plan. The Belt Air Rule included a requirement dictating compatibility of air velocity with fire suppression systems. The final rule of limiting air velocity in the belt entry was challenged in the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. The court granted that petition and vacated the requirement on the air velocity cap, according to MSHA. The removal of the air velocity cap from the final rule, paired with the compatibility requirement, led to a need for research on high air velocity?s influence on fire suppression system performance in belt entries. Test data was needed that illustrated the relationship between fire suppression system performance and air velocity, especially with the increased use of wider belts in underground coal mines, so National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and MSHA collaborated to obtain the data. However, this work was initiated before the revised Belt Air Rule was promulgated on December 31, 2008, when 1000 fpm air velocity became a requirement. Four different

Table 55 and figure 19 show the number of fires and fire injuries for stone mills by state during 1990-2001. Table 55 also shows the injury risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. In all, 118 fires occurred in 33 states. Seventy-six of the fires caused 82 injuries (including 8 fires and 6 injuries involving contractors). The yearly average was 9.8 fires and 6.8 injuries. The Ewhr value was 873 x 106 hr (In = 0.019), and the LWD value was 1,911. Missouri had the most fires (16 fires and 9 injuries), followed by Pennsylvania (15 fires and 14 injuries), Michigan (9 fires and 5 injuries), and Virginia (7 fires and 5 injuries). Of these states, Virginia had the highest injury risk rate value (In = 0.09 1). Table 56, partly illustrated in figure 20, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires and fire injuries decreased during most of the periods, with a sharp increase during the last period. The number of employees' working hours increased throughout the periods. The In values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values. Tables 57-63 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 21 shows the major variables related to fires for 1990-2001. Table 63 shows the fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

Reduce rockfall fatalities and injuries by using innovative blasting practices to reduce damage to the rock at the excavation limits with little or no increase in cost. The Problem Falls of highwall have been a leading cause of fatalities, injuries, and equipment damage in the surface mining industry. Although the number of highwall falls is not great, when such an incident does occur it is about 14 times more likely to be fatal or result in severe injury and damage to equipment than other types of surface mine accidents. Overbreak or damage to the rock from poor or improper blasting practices is a major factor contributing to rock falls. Presplitting or cushion blasting is the technique most often recommended for improved wall control. This type of blasting however, adds to drilling and blasting costs and is not universally accepted by the industry. Air gap presplitting techniques, also called air decks, are currently being used in some mines as a less costly alternative to conventional presplitting. Approach Blasting can cause highwall damage, but proper blasting techniques have been shown to reduce the magnitude of rockfall problems. In preventing rock falls, it is important to maintain the natural strength of the rock structure to the greatest extent possible. Improved blasting practices have three main advantages: 1) they are preventive rather than corrective in nature; 2) they are cost effective; and 3) they have a very low impact on the mining operation when properly implemented. New ways of evaluating highwall integrity, such as seismic refraction tomography, were investigated.
