[As part of the Bureau of Mines effort to provide thermodynamic data for advancement of mineral resources technology, the standard Gibbs energies of formation (?G°f) of MnS (manganese sulfide) and Fe0.9 S (pyrrhotite) were investigated with a high-temperature galvanic cell employing stabilized Zr02 (zirconia) as the electrolyte. Potential measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, MnS, MnO, S02 (g, 1 atm)//Zr02//02(g, 0.0114 atm), Pt with the overall cell reaction MnS (s) + 1.5 02 (g, 0.0114 atm) = MnO (s) + S02 (g) . (1) These results give the standard Gibbs energy of formation of MnS for the reaction Mn (s) + 0.552 (g) = MnS (s) (2) ?G°f = -66.487 + 15.19 x 10-3T±0.207 kcal/mole (896.4 - 1,208.1 K) (3) where temperature (T) is expressed in kelvins. Similar measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, FeO .9S, Fe304 , S02 (g, 1 atm) //Zr02//02 (g, 0.0114 atm) , Pt with the overall cell reaction 10/3 FeO .9 S (s) + 16/3 02 (g, 0.0114 atm) = Fe.,04 (s) +10/3 S02 (g). (4) These results yield the standard Gibbs energy of formation for the reaction 0.9 Fe (s) + 0.5 S2 (g) = Fe0.9 S (s) (5) ?G°f = -35.229 + 12.67 x 1073T+-0.104 kcal/mole (839.5 - 1,086.6 K). (6) A third-law analysis of MnS data yields a standard enthalpy of formation (AH°f) for the reaction Mn (s) + S (rh) = MnS (s) (7) ?H°f298 = -51.16±0.21 kcal/mole (8) A similar third-law analysis for Fe0.9S data yields a ?29°f298 for the reaction 0.9 Fe(s) + S(rh) = FeO .9S(s) (9) ?HO\°f298 = -24.01±_0.15 kcal/mole. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating several types of low-grade uranium deposits. Projections indicate that an increased percentage of future production will be derived from such sources. One material studied was from the Coso Mountains of California; this material contained 0.04 to 0.12 percent U3O8. The deposit contains at least two distinct types of mineralization. The material representing the bulk of this deposit was amenable to acid leaching; 80 to 85 percent U308 extraction resulted from leaching with 20 to 40 pounds per ton of sulfuric acid. No oxidizing agent was required. This ore fraction could be treated by either agitation or percolation leaching. Uranium recovery and purification from the acid leach solution was accomplished using anion exchange followed by precipitation with hydrogen peroxide and ammonia. The second type of mineral was very refractory to acid leaching; a maximum extraction of only 44 percent was obtained with sulfuric acid. Nitric and hydrochloric acids were ineffective also.

The Federal Bureau of Mines developed a rolling method that improves creep resistance and yield strengths of lead alloys containing up to 5 wt-pct Sb. The 0.69-inch-thick slab-cast alloys were breakdown-rolled to 0.226 inch and finish-rolled to 0.063 inch at 5-or 20-pct reduction per pass. Rolling was at room temperature to simulate conventional cold rolling, and at 75°, 125°, and 175° C. Two alternative methods evaluated consisted of (1) a single cold final pass followed by annealing and (2) a single hot final pass. Two additional processing methods involving percipitation strengthening were included for comparison. Compared with conventional cold rolling, hot rolling at 125° and 175° C with multiple light passes vastly improves creep resistance and raises yield strengths. Tensile strengths are less affected. The other treatments also improve creep resistance significantly and generally improve tensile properties; magnitudes vary with treatment and composition.

EXPLOSIVES RESEARCH. As the physical laboratories of the explosives section of the Pitts- burgh experiment station were equipped for testing the physical properties of explosives, both the Army and Navy Departments for many years had requested the Bureau of Mines to make such tests. Chemical control of the physical tests through analyses, heat tests, analyses of gaseous products of combustion, and sand tests was exer- cised through the explosives chemical laboratory. Often an investigation was cooperative between two laboratories. The explosives chemical laboratory also aided the work of the Ex- plosives Regulation both by chemical tests and investigation of acci- dents in explosives plants. COOPERATIVE WORK FOR ARMY AND NAVY DEPARTMENTS. The explosives chemical laboratory devised, at the request of the Bureau of Ordnance of the Navy, a more economical method of making hexanitrodiphenylamine. This problem was assigned to the Bureau of Mines by Dr. C. E. Munroe, chairman of the committee on explosives of the National Research Council, acting as the depart- ment of science and research of the Council of National Defense. Before the United States entered the war the following reports of investigations were submitted to the Army or the Navy: 1. Report of sensitiveness and relative efficiency of TNT and ammonium picrate, dated February 6, 1913, undertaken at the re- quest of the Chief of Ordnance. 2. Report of tests and examination of two samples of TNT and one of TNA for the Ordnance Department of the Army, dated August 5, 1915, was undertaken at the request of commanding officer, Frankford Arsenal. 3. Report of tests for sensitiveness to detonation of mercury ful- minate of 21 samples of TNT crystallized from various solvents, for the Bureau of Ordnance, Navy Department, dated June 17, 1916. 4. Report of tests of two samples of mercury fulminate for Frank- ford Arsenal, dated December 2, 1916, undertaken at the request of the commanding officer, Frankford Arsenal. After the United States entered the war the following reports of investigations were submitted: 5. Report of pendulum friction and large impact tests on two samples of "sodatol" and two samples of "amatol." The final report was dated July 20, 1918; and the preliminary report, May 15, 1918. On a continuous miner coal face methane concentrations are affected by the quantity of fresh intake air reaching the face. When mining the box cut on a 12.2-m (40-ft) two-pass extended cut face, the continuous miner is always at the point of deepest penetration, and operation of the machine-mounted dust scrubber and water spray system improve the flow of fresh air to the end of the box cut. However, when the continuous miner leaves the box cut to begin cutting the 40-ft slab, little is known about how much ventilation air reaches the end of the box cut. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a full-scale study to answer this question. Tests were run to determine how much ventilation air reaches the end of the box cut with the continuous miner at three locations in the 40-fttwo-pass extended cut mining sequence; at the end of the 40-ft box cut, at the start of the 40-ft slab cut, and 6.1 m (20 ft) into the slab cut. During these tests, methane gas was uniformly released at the end of the 40-ft box cut. Methane concentrations measured0.3 m (1 ft) from the roof and face of the box cut were used to estimate face airflow quantities. Fresh air flow rates of 1.89and 4.72 m/sec (4,000 and 10.000 cfm), scrubber flow rates of 0, 4,000 and 10,000 cfm, water spray pressures of 0 and3827 kPa (0 and 120 psi), and a blowing curtain setback position of 15.2m (50 ft) were used during these tests. To improve ventilation to the end of the 40-ft box cut when the continuous miner was starting the 40-ft slab cut and 20 ft into the slab cut, the blowing curtain was advanced from its 50-ft setback to locations 40-ft and then 8.5 m (28 ft) from the face. Develop an environmentally feasible method of mining shallow oil sands without removing overburden. Approach Oil sands are extracted through a single borehole by cutting into the sands around the borehole with a high pressure water jet, and pumping the resulting slurry to the surface. Although oil can be extracted from shallow fields by open-pit mining methods, this type of mining may create significant environmental impacts, including; (1) disruption of the surface, (2) accumulation of waste rock piles, (3) accumulation of tailings, (4) damage to the ground water quality, and (5) surface water pollution. The borehole mining system developed and successfully field tested by the Bureau of Mines offers a method for extracting oil from oil sand with minimal disturbance to environmental quality. (For examples of other applications of borehole mining, see Technology News Nos. 95, 63 56, and 48.) How It Works Prior to the start of mining operations, baseline conditions for ground subsidence and ground water quality are established at the test site so that the degree of subsidence and changes in ground water quality can later be determined. Oil sands mining is conducted using the Bureau of Mines borehole mining system. The borehole mining tool consists of a 12-inch-diameter pipe string and accessories capped with a three passage swivel terminated with a mining section. The mining section has an auger at the bottom. Four slurry inlet holes and an eductor are located above the auger, and a single cutting nozzle is located near the top of the mining section. The tool generates a high velocity water jet that erodes and slurrifies ores. The slurry is drawn into the inlet of the eductor which lifts the slurry to the surface where it is deposited into a slurry discharge sump. To detect evidence of subsidence, surveys of the land surface are made at regular intervals during, and until 30 days after, the termination of the mining operations. Samples of ground water from the borehole and two adjacent monitor holes are taken on alternate days during the mining operations, and are later analyzed to determine if any ground water contamination has occurred.

A performance comparison of 14 rescue breathing apparatus was undertaken as an assessment of past and present worldwide technology. Rescue breathing apparatus are self-contained, closed-circuit breathing apparatus used for entry into areas having atmospheres that are immediately dangerous to life and health. Apparatus tested were the Biomarine BioPak 45, 60, and 240; the Draeger BG 4 and BG-174A; the Litton LITPAC II; the MSA Custom 4500 II Air Mask, Chemox, and McCaa; the Sabre Selected Elevated Flow Apparatus (SEFA); the Scott Rescue-Pak; the Siebe Gorman Aerorlox and Proto Ten; and the SurvivairLP-120. The apparatus were tested on an automated breathing and metabolic simulator at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Physiological parameters monitored during the testing were average inhaled CO2 and O2, minimum inhaled CO2, inhaled wet-and dry-bulb temperatures, and peak inhalation and exhalation breathing pressures. The metabolic demand on the apparatus was 1.35 L O2/min for most of the test with two 5-min intervals of 2.5 L O2/min, the first beginning 10 min into the test and the second beginning 10 min before the end of the rated duration of the apparatus. Results presented include apparatus service life and test-averages of monitored physiological parameters. Schematic drawings and photographs of the apparatus are also included. The Draeger BG-174A and BG 4 had the highest durations—295 and 291 min, respectively. The BG 4 hadthe lowest minimum inhaled CO2 levels, attesting to the effectiveness of its CO2-absorbent canister. The SabreSEFA had the lowest average inhaled CO2 levels, due mostly to the apparently low-dead-space mask andnose cup. The MSA Air Mask, the only open-circuit device tested, had the lowest wet- and dry-bulb temperatures, with the liquid-O2-source Siebe Gorman Aerorlox having the next lowest temperatures. The only apparatus with a CO2-absorbent not in a packed-bed design, the BG-174A, had the lowest exhalation pressures. The BG 4 had the highest level of positive pressure, with the Biomarine BioPak 60, Survivair LP-120, SEFA, and Litton LITPAC II nearly as high. The BG 4 had the lowest pressure swing, with the SEFA a close second.

MINE VENTLATION NETWORK ANALYSIS

Reduce the dust levels to which jacksetters and helpers on auger mining sections are exposed by identifying viable, effective methods for control-ling respirable dust on these sections. Approach The Bureau of Mines con-ducted laboratory tests and respirable dust surveys to identify the factors that distinguish clean auger mining operations from dusty ones. Study Results Results of the Bureau's study revealed that ventilation is the most important element of auger mining dust control. The four must important venitilation parameters are airflow, curtain configuration, curtain setback, and curtain installation.

Provide exhaust face ventilation to remotely-controlled continuous mining machines making extended advances without exposing workers to unsupported roof. Approach Modify the sprayfan to move additional air to and from the coal mine face. Unmodified, sprayfans are capable of ventilating the face with 20-foot brattice setbacks. Additional sprays on the rear of the mining machine allow setbacks to be extended up to 40 feet.

Permit visual inspection of underground cavities dam the surface. Approach A closed circuit TV camera and a 35mm still camera are lowered down a borehole, and remotely operated. How It Works A platform holding the cameras, and other equipment is lowered on a graduated cable until the depth of interest is reached. Then a quartz lamp and the TV camera are turned on. The television picture is monitored at the surface and recorded on video tape. Areas of special interest are photographed with a 35mm still camera. These photographs contain more detail than TV images because photographic film is capable of higher resolution than a TV transmission.

Provide an accurate, simple, alternative means of evaluating the safety of mine electrical ground systems which has little or no negative impact on mine productivity. The Traditional Evaluation Method The Code of Federal Regulations requires all mines to safely ground their power systems to earth. Effective earth grounding reduces shock hazards to mine workers operating electrical equipment, protects equipment from damage by voltage transients, and provides a means of detecting and locating ground faults. Once an earth ground bed has been constructed, its level of resistance has traditionally been used to gauge the safety of the entire grounding system. Bed resistance measurements are normally performed using a ?fall of potential? technique with a current return electrode placed at a remote location, If the resistance measured is acceptably low, then the bed is assumed safe.
