The Bureau of Mines carbonized 35 coal samples from Logan and Mingo Counties) W. Va., at 900° C using the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association method, and determined yields of products and physical properties of cokes. Twenty samples represented the No.5 Block, Stockton, Chilton, Cedar Grove, Lower Cedar Grove, Alma, No. 2 Gas, and Eagle beds in Logan County, and 15 samples represented the Coalburg, Buffalo Creek, Winifrede, Cedar Grove, Lower Cedar Grove, Alma, and No.2 Gas beds in Mingo County, W. Va, Chemical analyses were determined for all coals. All coals in both counties rank as high-volatile A bituminous. Most of the coals are chemically suitable for metallurgical coals. Coals with accept-able ash and sulfur contents can be used as major constituents in coking blends with higher rank coal to yield coke with satisfactory properties for blast furnace use.

Develop a reliable, portable device for non-destructively testing the support integrity of a friction rock support (commonly referred to as a Split Set ). Approach The friction rock support, used to support mine roof and ribs, is a slotted tube driven into a drilled hole of smaller diameter. Upon installation, the tube is compressed radially. The amount of compression is a function of the hole diameter, the strength of the host rock, and the properties of the split set itself. A simple lightweight self-contained device was developed to determine the pull-out resistance of the friction rock supports in-situ, based on measurements of the tube's deformation. The tester measures the com-pressed internal volume of the slotted tube, which has been found to provide an estimate of the support's resistance to pull out. How It Works The tester consists of a pump and expander sections. The expander sections are made from an elastomer membrane which is stretched over two cores, each one inch in diameter and twelve inches long. The expanders are connected by a flexible coupler so that they can fit any alignment of the support.

"IntroductionCoal extraction by continuous miners (CM) is currently the most common underground method in the US industry and accounts for slightly more than two-thirds of the nation· s deep mining production (National Coal Association, 1987). Even if longwall mining should become more commonplace, it can proceed only af1er ventilation and access entries have been driven by CMs. Since an area of concern continues to be the effects of the dust generated on the health of mineworkers, this paper discusses the relationship between the elemental composition of mining-generated airborne dust sampled from the immediate ventilation return of a CM and laboratory-generated dust derived from channel samples taken from the mines.There are several potential contributions of this type of study to the coal mining industry. First after more fundamental knowledge of the causes of Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP) is learned, the laboratory-generated respirable dust could be used to identify a potentially hazardous coal seam. Also, this study could possibly aid in understanding the fundamental causes of CWP by producing mining-simulated samples of coal dust that could be used in epidemiological studies.Further, assuming that there is no difference in the elemental composition of a drill-core sample and a channel sample from the same location a mining company could predict anew mine's respirable dust elemental composition In the immediate ventilation return by using exploratory drill core samples of the roof ,coal, and floor rock to prepare the laboratory dust. Ventilation engineers could then use engineering design and control measures during premine planning to reduce the incidence and severity of CWP by better ventilating the potentially hazardous coal seam. If this proper planning prevented any future changes to the ventilation equipment and mine design, much time and money could be saved.Scope of workTo investigate the variability of the chemical characteristics of respirable dust, airborne dust samples from eight underground coal mines located in the eastern and mid western United States were collected with eight-stage Sierra Model 298 Marple cascade impactors, as well as 25 channel samples of mined material. Each channel sample was removed from the middle of the coal face before mining occurred. Sampling of the mining-generated dust was conducted by Lee ( 1986) by sampling the entire working sections, primarily for characterization purposes, to obtain information on the locational variability of dust characteristics. Research performed for this study used the elemental analyses of the mining-generated dusts he sampled in the immediate ventilation returns of CMs."

This paper reports determinations of heats of formation (from the oxides and elements) of crystalline cadmium metasilicate and crystalline lead meta-silicate by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The results, in conjunction with known entropy values, yield free energies of formation. There are no earlier data of this type for cadmium metasilicate. The results of this investigation for lead metasilicate deviate from the literature values (which are less reliable) in the direction of increased thermodynamic stability. Both cadmium and lead metasilicate are much less thermodynamically stable with respect to their constituent oxides than are the corresponding compounds of the alkaline earth metals.

To further investigate the potential of precast concrete sets as a support medium for underground mines, the Bureau of Mines designed a five-piece precast concrete drift set for a small opening and tested it to destruction in a straining frame. Twenty-seven tests were made with three sizes of members using three loading conditions. In addition, six tests were made with sets in a distorted configuration, Test results and typical failure patterns are presented. A comparison of results with those previously reported for the three-piece set shows the five-piece set supports considerably larger total loads than does the three-piece set of equivalent cross section designed for the same size of opening. Recommendations are made for improvements in design.

The Bureau of Mines stabilized 10 acres of windblown copper mill tailings at McGill, Nev., by a combination chemical-vegetative procedure. Legumes, winter wheat, wheat-grasses, and wild rye were seeded, and the area was subsequently sprayed with a resinous adhesive chemical to stabilize the sands until the vegetation could grow. During the year since treatment, the area has been well stabilized against wind erosion. The established vegetation appears to be capable of self-perpetuation and renewal without irrigation. The cost of stabilizing the area was $135.50 per acre.

[Available statistics show that the demands of the American chemical industry for sodium sulphate have been increasing slightly in recent years. The supply from domestic sources, particularly in the form of byproduct salt cake from the acid manufacturers, has been tending to decease due to the growing manufacture of synthetic acid. Both hydrochloric and nitric acids are being synthesized from their elements. The natural result has been that a smaller amount of salt cake is available. Simultaneously, the expansion of the Kraft-paper industry, especially in Lie South, has brought about greater demand for sodium sulphate in that section. This demand is being met by domestic byproduct salt cake, by imported German sodium sulphate made from potash waste liquors, and by favorably situated domestic deposits of Glauber salts and tile anhydrous salt, thenardite. No shortage of natural sodium sulphate exists in the United States, but usually such deposits occur in semiarid regions far re¬moved from transportation facilities and from markets. Moreover, the major portion of the natural deposits is Glauber salt or mirabilite (Na2SO4?10H20), which must be dried or dehydrated in order to most consumer requirements. The waters of hydration represents, roughly, 55 percent of tae total weight of the crude salts and therefore has a very important influence on transportation costs. In marry instances the cost of getting even the dehydrated product to market is the deciding economic factor. Therefore, the recovery or production of anhydrous sodium sulphate from plant-waste liquors or from natural brines of suitable composition might be economically feasible.]

Zircon sand may be reacted with sodium hydroxide at 600° C. to form sodium zirconate and sodium silicate. Sodium zirconate is water insoluble and so may be washed free of sodium silicate. The sodium zirconate may then be converted to zirconyl chloride by the action of hydrochloric acid and the zirconyl chloride crystals separated by cooling the solution. This approach produces zirconyl chloride of satisfactory purity with less cost than is involved in buying anhydrous zirconium chloride and converting it. Exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) and the postural requirements of the job have been identified as important risk factors in the development of musculoskeletal disorders of the back among workers exposed to a vibratory environment. This paper focuses on preliminary results of WBV data collected for two groups of haulage trucks ? four older trucks from manufacturer A (MFR-A) and two newer trucks from manufacturer B (MFR-B). All of the trucks and their respective seats were considered to be in good working order during the study. Measurement periods for the truck groups had similarities, but varied from 2 to 58 minutes. Sampling times for the older trucks included a mean of 19.5 minutes and a standard deviation (STD) of 6.5 minutes compared to a mean of 40.8 minutes and a STD of 12.1 minutes for the newer trucks. Data collection coincided with the approximate delivery and first operation of the new trucks, and occurred approximately 12 months apart under similar weather and road conditions, and with the same drivers except an additional driver was included with the older trucks. Truck routes were somewhat different in that quarry production had changed location in the time between data collection activities. Overall, the results suggest that the newer trucks may provide better overall isolation to drivers/operators from WBV exposure compared to the older trucks operating at the quarry; although, this will need to be confirmed with additional measurements. Considering the higher variability and shorter sampling times for the older trucks, the results should be viewed with caution. For two of seven trials, the older trucks showed that seats amplified vibration, i.e., a transmissibility (T) >1.0. Seat T for the older trucks ranged from 0.31 to 1.17 with a mean of 0.77 and STD of 0.32. This contrasted with the newer haulage trucks where seats amplified vibration in 3 of 8 trials. In this case, T did not vary greatly and ranged from 0.87 to 1.05 with a mean of 0.97 and STD of 0.07. Regarding older trucks, in five of seven trials, the seat (output) data of weighted root-mean square (RMS) acceleration (wRMSZ) for the dominant z-axis exceeded the action level of 0.5 m/s2 action level recommended by the European Union Good Practice Guide for WBV (EUGPG) and levels exceeded the recommended exposure limit of 1.15 m/s2 in two of the seven trials. The wRMSZ values for the older trucks varied from 0.41 to 1.83 m/s2 with a mean of 0.99 and STD of 0.57. Similarly, newer trucks indicated a narrower range of wRMSZ from 0.38 to 0.95 m/s2. The mean wRMSZ was lower for the newer trucks at 0.58 m/s2 with a STD of 0.23 m/s2. Similarly, newer trucks indicated wRMSZ reached or exceeded the action level in four of eight trials. None of the trials with the new trucks showed wRMSZ levels that reached or exceeded the recommended 1.15 m/s2 exposure limit. As an indicator of driver/operator discomfort, overall weighted total RMS acceleration (vector sum) values seem to show a ?rougher? ride for the older trucks. The vector sum values for these trucks ranged widely from 0.70 to 2.59 m/s2 and, in four of seven trials, showed levels greater than 1.40 m/s2. The mean vector sum was 1.44 m/s2 with a STD of 0.75 m/s2. Comparatively, the newer trucks exhibited less variation with a range from 0.69 to 1.59 m/s2. The mean vector sum was 1.02 m/s2 with a STD of 0.35 m/s2. Vibration dose values for the dominant z-axis (VDVZ), gave a sense of vehicle jarring/jolting conditions. All trials with the older trucks were within the recommended EUGPG action level of 9.1 m/s1.75. On the other hand, in three of eight trials, both newer trucks exceeded this action level with values of 9.18, 12.58, and 13.21 m/s1.75. Neither truck group showed VDVZ that exceeded the exposure limit of 21 m/s1.75. A statistical analysis was not conducted, since the differences reported between truck groups may not be statistically significant owing to the relatively small sample size. Road conditions, changes in the truck routes, and driver/operator differences (e.g., stopping and turning) are possible factors in the higher VDV for the newer trucks.

A field method has been devised for rapid determination of heavy minerals occurring in the unconsolidatod beach and dune sands. The method has been proved practical by usage in field evaluations of several hundred beach- and dune-sand samples in the Florida area. The simple equipment required and the techniques involved are described. Other data show that the method is relatively insensitive to variations in the mineralogical content or size distribution of the mixed heavy minerals contained in the samples tested. A modification of this procedure, found to be suitable for plant use in determining the relative purity of heavy-mineral flotation concentrates, is also described. A specific application is determination of the amount of feldspar-quartz in spodumene flotation concentrates. The results of the rapid evaluation techniques closely approximate those obtained by more precise laboratory procedures.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research into the pneumatic recovery of coarse mica and has used this method to produce mica concentrates that contain more than 90 percent mica. This research is being carried out pursuant to the Bureau's objective to develop technology that will help maintain an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs. Researchers used a Bureau-designed system of crushers, screens, and zig-zag air classifiers to concentrate coarse liberated mica particles from mica-bearing materials. This pneumatic system was used to concentrate four mica ores from Arizona, North Carolina, and South Dakota and three waste tailings from Alabama, Georgia, and South Dakota. Using these samples, it was demonstrated that plus 65-mesh size mica can be effectively recovered by the pneumatic method. Not only were the concentrates high in mica content; it was also demonstrated that this method can be used to recover up to 78 percent of the mica that was originally contained in the samples. Because it is a dry concentration method, the pneumatic beneficiation technique may be advantageous in areas where water resources are limited.

The Pinnacles Wilderness Contiguous Wilderness Study Area (WSA) (CA-040-303) is 30 miles south of Hollister, CA, in San Benito and Monterey Counties. It is composed of five parcels of public land totaling 5,838 acres adjacent to the Pinnacles National Monument. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management later reduced the size of the Recommended Suitable Area (RSA) to 2,200 acres. U.S: Bureau of Mines personnel examined the entire WSA in May 1984. The WSA is underlain by Tertiary sedimentary and Cretaceous plutonic rocks. Diatoms occur in interbedded tuff, shale, and sandstones in the northern part of the WSA, but outside the RSA. In 1984, there were no mines, prospects, mining claims, leases, or mineral resources in or within one mile of the study area. No energy minerals were identified; however, an oil well was drilled in 1951 in the northern part of the WSA, but outside the RSA; it was a dry hole.

The use of Diesel fuel continues to increase. In the United States during 1951 over 120,000,000 barrels of Diesel fuel oil were sold. The railroads used approximately 43.5 percent of this volume; industries such as smelters, mines, and manufacturing plants used about 12 percent; trucks, busses, tractors and bulldozers 20 percent; water craft 14.5 percent; and the remaining 10 percent was consumed by gas and electric utilities, the military forces, and oil companies. These figures were calculated from data issued by the Bureau of Mines. 2/ Complete data for 1952 are not yet available, but it is known that by December 1952 over 13 3/4 million barrels of Diesel fuel per month were produced by the country's refineries and by April 1953 the monthly production had increased to 1 4,333,000 barrels.3/ Information on the properties of this type of engine fuel is very important to the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers. To supply this information the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, under cooperative agreement, are conducting annual surveys of Diesel fuel oil produced in refineries in this country.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a field study of respirable dust concentrations at an underground room-and-pillar oil shale mine and at the aboveground milling facility to determine the dust generation sources, personal respirable exposure, characteristic minerals, and size distribution of the dust. Major dust sources in the mine were the scaling and blasthole drilling operations, and major dust sources in the processing mill were the screening and crushing operations. Principal minerals found in the airborne respirable dust were albite, analcite, calcite, dolomite, quartz, and orthoclase. The average alpha-quartz content of mine and mill respirable dust samples was 4.1 pct and 15.5 pct, respectively. Carbonaceous material such as diesel particulate accounted for approximately 75 pct of the respirable particulate found in the mine. The average coefficient of variance of respirable dust concentrations measured with approved personal dust samplers in the mine and mill was 7.6 pct, the best precision observed to date with the personal dust sampler operated in the field.

Tables 19 to 45: Contain current data on various selected factors of operating and physical conditions that have contributed to the occurrence of injuries at bituminous-coal mines and at Pennsylvania anthracite mines. These factors include extent of hand and machine loading, size of mine by employment and production groups, thickness of bed or vein, duration and number of work shifts, rating of mine as gassy, or nongassy, types of cap lamps, ventilation, explosives, and combinations of factors that influence mine safety. (C) Injury experience by States: 1. Tables 46 to 52: Contain current data on number of injuries, frequency and severity rates, average severity, major classification of injuries, injury records of all coal-producing States, and the relative standing by States according to injury-frequency rates. A mineral survey of the 67, 110-acre Raven?s Eye WSA (Wilderness Study Area) in the north-central Snake River Plain of Idaho was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management. The WSA is in Blaine and Lincoln Counties; the northwest corner is about 1 mile east of Carey, 10. A search of county mining claim records indicated that no claims have been located in the WSA. Basaltic lava is the only rock type exposed within the WSA. A platy variety of lava (slab pahoehoe) occurs that is produced from other lava fields in southern Idaho. The material is marketed as decorative stone, used for wall veneers, and retails for approximately $125/ton. Within the W5A, approximately 18,000 tons of indicated reserves are concentrated in two areas, and a total of 12,000 tons of indicated subeconomic resources were found at six other localities. An additional 10,000 tons of inferred subeconomic resources are unevenly distributed over the remainder of the WSA.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated 21 mines, prospects, and mineralized sites in and adjacent to a 38,713-acre portion of the 255,058-acre Kingston Range Wilderness Study Area in 1983. The study area is 35 miles north of Baker, CA in the Mojave Desert. Mineral deposits in and adjacent to the study area are in altered carbonate rocks intruded by diabase sills near monzonite porphyry contacts. Monzonite porphyry forms the core of the Kingston Range and underlies about 70 percent of the study area. Sedimentary carbonate rocks are exposed in bands on the north and east boundaries and as isolated roof pendants in the southeastern portion of the study area.

U.S. supply and demand data for utility electricity by States and regions were tabulated for the years 1960 and 1965. Estimates are provided of State-by-State quantitative data for the utility electricity industry that can be integrated into State and regional energy balances by source, form, and major consuming sectors, and used to determine basic flow-patterns. The difficult problem of compiling interstate and interregional shipments of electricity was resolved by (a) assuming the negligibility of interregional shipments and (b) deriving a theoretical line loss percentage used for determining interstate shipments. The data developed were able to show an estimated total supply of utility electricity available for consumption. The tables also report the distribution of the supply among the major consuming sectors (household and commercial, industrial, and transportation). To compare the various energy sources of utility electricity, quantities were converted to their British thermal unit (Btu) equivalents. The Federal Power Commission, Edison Electric Institute, and Bureau of Mines are the sources of the data used in this study.

This report summarizes Bureau of Mines experiments in purifying sulfate leach liquors, which were prepared from low-tenor beryl concentrates by modifying the Degussa process. The leach liquor was prepared from a beryl concentrate containing 2.7 percent BeO by (1) sintering the beryl concentrate with limestone in a rotary kiln at about 1,150° C. and by (2) treating the sinter first with sulfuric acid and then with water to form and extract beryllium sulfate. About 80 percent of the beryllium was dissolved. The resulting leach liquor contained 2.4 grams of BeO, 20 grams of Al203, and 6 grams of Fe203 per liter. The laboratory solution contained much more aluminum and iron than a solution derived from treating 10 percent BeO concentrate, which is the standard raw material used by industry. Tests were made to determine the behavior of the solution toward alum purification and limestone neutralization both of which were employed industrially in conventional Degussa procedure.

The nickel-bearing laterite deposits in the Pine Flat and Diamond Flat areas, Del Norte County, Calif., were investigated by the Bureau of Mines to determine the extent and nickel content of the two deposits and the amenability of the ores to metallurgical treatment. The work was based on drill-hole sampling and metallurgical tests in which attrition scrubbing and sizing, reduction roasting, and magnetic separation were used. Results of the sampling indicated that the deposits are comparatively small and are marginal or submarginal in grade. Metallurgical tests showed that no separation of cobalt from nickel and iron was made by sizing; however, a large portion of the chromium was separated. Reduction roasting and magnetic separation did result in upgrading the iron, nickel, and cobalt, and the simultaneous rejection of chromium.
