To provide cooler air to miners working in hot areas of mines, particularly new deep hardrock mines. Approach Air supplied to hot working areas of mines is cooled by passing it through a series of water sprays. How It Works Water nozzles mounted inside a section of ventilation tubing release cooling sprays of water into the air being blown through the tube. The prototype of the water spray cooler consists of six evenly spaced water sprays located inside a 10-ft. long section of 16-inch-diameter fiberglass ventilation tubing. See diagram. This section of rigid tubing is installed into one of the positive pressure ventilation tubing lines that conduct fresh air into working stopes. The intake manifold to the six water sprays is connected to the mine?s cool water line, and the water valve on the manifold is opened. Warm ventilation air being supplied to the stope passes through the water sprays, and is cooled by the lower temperature water.

This report is the 18th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations. The previous 17 reports have covered fiscal years, but this report covers not only the fiscal year from July 1, 1952, to June 30, 1953, but also July through December 1953, to bring the report to a calendar-year basis. Most of the material in this report relates to publications issued during the reporting period, Some work is mentioned briefly on which publications have not yet been issued or on which data are riot expected to be published, for security or other reasons, and in a few instances publications issues before the reporting period but not included in the previous report are mentioned.3/ Further details on the published work described herein may be found by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes. During the reporting period, the Bureau directed its research and technologic work on coal toward developing end encouraging increased conservation and more efficient use of our mineral fuel resources through more efficient and safer mining methods and improved methods of preparing and utilizing these fuels. Some significant advances, particularly in coal-mine safety, mining methods, and development and utilization of low-rank coma have been made.

The Bureau of Mines studied the conversion of a variety of cellulosic wastes, for example, sawdust, bovine manure, sewage sludge, urban refuse (free of metal and ceramics), etc., to heavy oils. The objective of the investigation was to determine the scope of the reaction and elucidate the chemistry involved. The reactions took place in the presence of synthesis gas and water or carbon monoxide and water under conditions of elevated temperatures and pressures. Waste conversions above 90 pct, often near 99 pct, with oil yields in the range of 40 to 60 pct, were obtained in the temperature range of 250° to 425° C and pressure range of 1,500 to 4,000 psig. Because mild conditions were sought, most of the experiments were conducted at temperatures of 250° to 350° C and pressures of 1,500 to 3,000 psig. In general, lower viscosity products were obtained at higher reaction temperatures. Conversions and oil yields were significantly increased by operating in the presence of a high-boiling oil; either anthracene oil or oil recycled from the process was satisfactory. Synthesis gas containing 50 pct carbon monoxide gave satisfactory results as a replacement for carbon monoxide. Cobalt molybdate on alumina catalyst, used with sodium carbonate, gave a product of lower viscosity and lower oxygen content than sodium carbonate used as the sole catalyst. The waste-to-oil process has been successfully investigated in continuous flow equipment as well as in batch autoclaves.

Research conducted over the past 20 years in France, Great Britain, and the United States on the use of the large-hole burn cut has established cer¬tain advantages for this system. Advantages include longer pull and more complete fragmentation from blast rounds. However, research is needed to establish a set of parameters for optimum performance. As part of the Bureau of Mines Advancing Mining Technology for Marginal Resources program, the Twin Cities Mining Research Center, Twin Cities, Minn., acquired a horizontal rotary drill capable of boring holes up to 24 in. in diameter. This was used for a series of underground experiments at White Pine mine, White Pine, Mich., during 1973. Exceptional results were obtained with a 12-1/4-in void hole that yielded up to 18 ft of pull in a 10- by 20-ft drift, Fragmentation was excellent, and the compactness of the muck pile facilitated loading.

"INTRODUCTION In compliance with those provisions of the organic act establishing the Bureau. of Mines which relate to improvement of health conditions of persons engaged in the mining, preparation, or treatment of mineral substances, sanitary surveys have been made of towns and villages housing the coal miners, metal miners, and mill and smelter employees of Utah.The purpose of the surveys is to afford studies of conditions prevailing in the various mining and smelter towns so far as concerns housing, water supplies, sewage disposal, refuse disposal the handling of foodstuffs, general sanitation, wash and. change houses, and the control of preventable diseases, all of which directly or indirectly have a bearing on the health and efficiency of employees and their families. Certain other factors have been added to the general sanitary surveys such as school and recreational facilities, which have a decided influence on contentment and efficiency. Through comparisons of favorable and unfavorable conditions and practices, and the dissemination of such information, improvements can be effected which will benefit both the employees and the employers.ACKNOWLEGMENTSAcknowledgment is made of the many courtesies shown by the officials of companies and towns visited. The Valery fluorspar deposit , also known as the Hamilton deposit , is northeast of Lovelock and 4 miles by poor dirt road east of U. S. Highway 40 . It is in the Humboldt Mining District , on the west side of the Humboldt Range , at an altitude of 6,000 to 6,500 feet . The property was examined by the Bureau of Mines on February 83/ and April 8 , 1944.4/ The last examination was made with an engineer of the Geological Survey.5/ Exploring by means of trenches , cuts , shaft sinking , coyote holes off the shaft , and a small amount of prospecting with short drill holes , was begun in January 1945 and was completed June 30 , 1945. An engineer6/ of the Geological Survey visited the property in April and again in June 1945 to complete a topographic map of the area and to note the results of exploration by the Bureau of Mines . Only minor surface exploring had been done on fluorspar occurrences previous to the Bureau's work . No mining equipment or living facilities are on the property .

Overall the domestic abrasives industry had one of its best years in 1965. Production and value of all commodities increased over that of 1964 which also was a good year. Production of tripoli that was down in the previous year rebounded and production from two new mines was reported. Plant capacities for production of silicon carbide and fused crude aluminum oxide and production from plants in the United States and Canada increased, but demand was high and yearend stocks were less than at the end of 1964. Foreign Trade.-Increases in value of most imports of abrasive materials in 1965 were offset by a decrease in the value of imported industrial diamond. Production of fused aluminum oxide and silicon car-bide in the United States and Canada and imports of these commodities into the United States increased, but combined exports of finished grain of these materials was virtually unchanged from the previous year.

The requests covered a wide range of fuel-economy problems and included boiler-water treatment after it became apparent that water-formed deposits on heating surfaces acted as insulators, decreasing heat transfer and impairing fuel efficiency. Dr. Ralph E. Hall, a Bureau of Mines physical chemist determined the reactions that cause adhering scale to form in boilers (7)2 and went on to introduce scientific principles into water treatment for scale prevention (8). Widespread publicity of these achievements increased the requests for help from Federal steam-generating plants. Since no other Federal agency (even those which were more directly concerned with testing water) wanted to provide boiler-feedwater service, the Bureau decided to continue to give requested help to Federal agencies, Later, the Congress endorsed such agency cooperation as an economy measure,

This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1952 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 94 samples of aviation gasoline which include, for the first time in this series of reports, data on five samples of grade 108/135 aviation fuel. Data also are given for 34 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers? production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 20 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 16 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

Until mines are quieter, one way you can help save your vital sense of hearing is to use hearing protectors whenever the noise around you is hazardous. Even if you already have some hearing loss, you can use hearing protectors to prevent your hearing from getting worse. When loud noise is present, proper use of hearing protectors will help miners pre-vent most or all noise-induced hearing loss.

To rapidly limit and interrupt high dc fault currents with minimal arcing in the mine atmosphere. Approach Design a dc switching sys-tem which uses a pressurized, liquid metal-filled, change-of-state device combined with a conventional interrupter and commutating switch. Direct Current Interruption Switching and interruption of large direct currents imposes severe loads on fuses, contactors, and circuit breakers in mine power systems. This problem is much more pronounced with de than with ac because of the lack of a natural current zero in dc. Dc interruption is characterized by persistent arcing that can foul contact tips and con-tribute to interrupter failures. To reduce maintenance and prolong the service life of these units, a commercially viable dc switching system has been developed by the Bureau of Mines through a research contract with the University of Pittsburgh. This system rapidly limits and interrupts high fault currents when used in combination with conventional interrupters.

Mining injury statistics show that a significant number of back, neck, and head injuries are linked to exposure from vehicle vibration. Use of a suspension seat is a common way to isolate the vehicle operator from the adverse effects of vibration exposure. Thus, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health1 – Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (NIOSH – PRL) performed laboratory studies on four passive and two semi-active seat suspension designs. These are typical of seat suspensions commonly found on large off-road heavy surface mining, construction and agricultural vehicles as either replacement or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) systems. One included a pneumatic (air bladder) spring mechanism. The fifth and sixth suspensions were a NIOSH magnetorheological (MR) semi-active damper design based on the pneumatic (air bladder) and one of the coil spring suspensions above. These suspensions were modified with a commercially available MR damper substituted for the OEM damper. These six seat suspension systems were tested and analyzed, for vertical vibration only, using the ISO 5007 Standard [1]. This paper describes the laboratory vibration tests using a MTS® shaker table and discusses the results obtained for the different suspension designs and highlights the rheonetic technology studied. Implications of the seat suspension designs relative to their capabilities for isolating vehicle operators from vibration exposure are discussed. Results for suspensions 1 through 3 showed frequencies of isolation from 2.1 to 3.0 Hz using the 40-kg (88-lb) mass and from 1.65 Hz to 1.8 Hz using the 80-kg (176-lb) mass. Suspension #4, in tests with only the 80-kg (176-lb) mass, showed an isolation frequency of 3.7 Hz. With the MR damper added to seat suspension #4, the peak transmissibility was lowered from 1.3 to 0.95 and showed a corresponding downward shift in frequency from 2.25 Hz to 1.4 Hz. In fact, the results for suspension #5 (the MR damper added to seat suspension #4), using test #3 conditions of the programmed control algorithm, showed isolation (attenuation of transmitted vibration) throughout the test frequency range from 1.0 to 6.0 Hz.

"INTRODUCTION Oxide manganese ore from the Sheep Mountain property was of intermediate grade (23.0 percent manganese) and contained silica as the major impurity. The deposit from which the ore was taken is known as the Sheep Mountain manganese property and is 8 miles west of Durkee, Oreg. Test work was done in the metallurgical laboratories of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, Utah, on representative samples cut from a 290-pound shipment of crushed ore submitted by the Oregon State Department of Geology and Mineral Industries and reported to be typical of the Sheep Mountain deposit.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe authors wish to acknowledge the assistance of R. The Bureau of Mines tested cores from 35 wells from 14 oil-producing zones in southern Illinois, southern Indiana, and western Kentucky to determine why rates of water injection were apparently low in some zones. Since these zones contain only minor amounts of clay minerals, it is concluded that permeability reduction results from movement of dislodged silica particles and other material, including the clays, that lines the pores. Both single-phase and two-phase permeability measurements, however, indicated that most samples had only low to moderate water sensitivity, so that permeability reduction due to such particle movement should usually not be of practical significance. The effective permeability to water was considerably lower than the effective permeability to oil during two-phase flow measurements, as is typical of most reservoir rocks. It can be concluded, therefore, that relatively high injection pressures will be required in waterflooding thin zones or zones having low permeabilities.

"INTRODUCTION During the course of the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, laboratory studies of concentration were conducted at the Salt Lake City station on a sample of ore from the Lake Valley mines of the Newalpitt Fluorspar Corp. of Deming, N. Mex. The ore was reported to be representative of the type that would be mined for mill feed. The sample tested was found to be amenable to beneficiation by ore-dressing methods for the production of products that, when sintered, assayed over 44 percent Mn.At the beginning of the investigation of manganese-ore beneficiation in December 1940, the only product marketable to Metals Reserve Company was ferrograde manganese grade B, the requirements for which follow: Mn, min., 48 percent; Fe, max., 7 percent; Si02, max., 10 percent; P, max., 0.18 percent; Al203, max., 6 percent; Zn, max., 1 percent, Al2O3,Later the specifications were modified gradually. As of May 15, 1943, manganese products were acceptable if they contained over 35 percent manganese and less than 3 percent zinc and 1 percent phosphorus. Prices were based upon material containing 48 percent manganese, 6.0 percent iron, and 11 percent silica plus alumina. Premiums were paid for manganese content in excess of 48 percent and iron content below 6 percent, penalties being imposed upon products containing less than 43 percent -manganese, or more than 6 percent iron, or more than 11 percent silica plus alumina. The specifications for commercial manganese further required that maximum particle size be 12 inches and that, 75 percent of the product be coarser than 20-mesh. Therefore, fine material such as table and flotation concentrates had to be nodulized or sintered. In addition, oarbcnate manganese ores were not acceptable unless calcined."

In connection with its research in producing synthetic liquid fuels from coal, the Federal Bureau of Mines studied reactions of iron and iron compounds with hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide in batch autoclaves. The Bureau hoped to gain indirect evidence regarding the chemical changes that iron catalysts undergo when they are used in the hydrogenation of coal. The information obtained may be helpful in identifying the active form or forms of iron catalysts. At 450° C., with hydrogen at hundreds of atmospheres and hydrogen sulfide at 1 or 2 atmospheres, the thermodynamically stable form of iron is ferrous sulfide in the case of the metal, magnetite, ferric oxide, ferrous sulfate, ferrous oxalate, or the chlorides of iron. However, complete conversion to ferrous sulfide was not achieved at temperatures of 400° to 500° C. for kinetic reasons. Extensive sulfiding of iron, magnetite, ferric oxide, and ferrous oxalate occurred below 400° C., and some conversion of ferrous sulfate to ferrous sulfide occurred at 400° C. In the hydrogenation of coal, ferrous sulfide is the form of iron likely to be available for heterogeneous catalysis when starting with the metal, oxide, sulfate, or oxalate.

A goal of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is the advancement of minerals technology through the development of improved metals and minerals processing. In support of this goal, the Albany Metallurgy Research Center has developed atomic absorption spectrographic methods for the rapid analysis of A1203, CaO, Fe203, MgO, MnO, and Si02 in steelmaking slags. The application of these methods is discussed using an inexpensive pressure dissolution system. The overall coefficient of variation is 5 pct. The accuracy is the same as the reproducibility.
