This paper describes in detail the cost of equipping and developing the Golden Belt mine, Yavapai County, Ariz. These costs should be typical of the average small gold mine in central Arizona which has been equipped with used machinery a, a minimum of capital expenditure. The conditions of remoteness, transportation, water, and power supply are about average for properties in the Bradshaw fountains and that vicinity. There are several mines in the district in the process of development and several dormant properties that might be opened in the future. The Golden Belt group of claims was taken over by the present management in May, 1931. Although some active development has been carried on in recent years, resumption of work at the old property required entire rehabilitation of the equipment and camp. As the water level had not been reached, there was no problem of dewatering. In the presentation of costs in this paper an evaluation of the cost of equipment and development work as taken over by the Golden Belt Mines, Inc., has been made. Enact data, however, on previous exploration and construction costs are lacking. The total cost of equipping and developing the mine to its present stage has been obtained by adding the disbursements of the present management to the above-mentioned evaluation. These costs do not include the cost of replacing camp, equipment destroyed by fires, of unsuccessful milling experiments, management, or obsolete equipment on the property.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on cable bolt ground supports to assess their material and support properties, to provide design criteria for using cable bolt supports as roof control systems under various types of underground mining conditions, and to provide a mathematical model of cable bolt support systems. Part 1 describes laboratory studies of the support properties of cable bolts made of conventional steel cables and provides recommendations on such topics as the use of thick grouts, selection of breather tubes, and reduction of water bleeding in cement-based grouts. The studies evaluated both single and double cables; effects of different embedment lengths, water-cement ratios, and grout curing temperatures on support strength; effects of use or nonuse of breather tubes; pumpability and water-bleeding properties of grouts; and the strength properties of sand-cement grouts. Part 2 will cover the strength characteristics of birdcage cable bolt supports, epoxy-coated cables, and cables with steel buttons attached.

In 1989-90, the Bureau of Mines appraised selected high resource potential areas containing gold, rare-earth-element, or pegmatite deposits in or near the Black Hills National Forest. Available mineral resource data were used to construct mine and mill models and to compute discounted cash-flow rate-of-return analyses. Using this information, the economic feasibility of possible operations and probability (in the nonmathematical sense) of exploration and development within the next decade were assessed. High exploration and development probabilities are forecast for gold deposits around existing and permitted mine areas near Lead-Deadwood and west of Galena. The area east of Galena has low to moderate exploration and development probability; the Rochford area has low to high exploration probability and low to moderate development probability; the Keystone area has low to moderate exploration probability and low development probability; the Medicine Mountain area has moderate to high exploration and low to moderate development probabilities. Exploration probability in the Bear Lodge Mountains area is high for rare-earth elements and gold; development probability is low. Exploration probability for gold in the Mineral Hill area is low to moderate; development probability is low. The current level of activity associated with pegmatite mining in the Black Hills would probably not change significantly in the next decade; both exploration and development probabilities are low to moderate.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a field experiment involving the sinking of two test shafts to directly compare the deformational behavior of circular and rectangular shapes. Results show that the circular shape is less sensitive to geologic discontinuities and applied stress field. Also, the rectangular shape is subject to a variety of behavioral modes, including beam bending and buckling. Geologic discontinuities around circular and rectangular shapes influence displacement significantly. Simple, two-dimensional elastic finite-element modeling, simulating circular and rectangular shapes in a biaxial stress field, shows that the structural response of a shaft is largely controlled by geologic structure. Consideration of anisotropy may be required for realistic analysis of a deep shaft.

This paper summarizes a survey of fine-grinding practice in ore-concentrating plants throughout the United States, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and Cuba as reported in the Bureau of Mines Information Circulars on milling methods. The survey covers 49 concentrators, which have a combined capacity of over 160,000 tons per day. In these plants 470 ball, rod, and pebble mills prepare material for flotation, gravity concentration, amalgamation, cyanidation, and air separation. The ores are those of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, feldspar, and pyrite. The metallurgy is that of the period 1928-32. Of these 49 concentrators, 36 are in the United States. They can treat 134,400 tons per day, and they have 326 fine-grinding mills. In the United States there are about 100 active or temporarily idle concentrators, exclusive of the many plants in the Tri-State zinc district, the washeries of the Lake Superior iron ranges and the Florida phosphate area, and small gold and silver concentrators. These 100 plants have an estimated capacity of 290,000 tons per day and employ about 650 ball, rod, and pebble mills. Consequently, since this paper covers about half of the production of this country it may be considered as particularly representative of fine grinding in ore mills in the United States.

"The velocity of detonation of an explosive is one of its most important properties, because its performance depends markedly on the rate at which it releases its energy. Fortunately, the velocity of detonation is one of the few properties of an explosive that can be measured precisely. However, the velocity of detonation of an explosive may depend on several factors other than its chemical composition, such as density, physical state, degree of confinement, nature of confinement, and magnitude of initiating impulse. Presumably for an explosive of fixed chemical and physical properties there are certain limiting conditions of confinement and initiation under which the explosive will detonate at a maximum constant and uniform velocity. This velocity is its ""ideal"" velocity of detonation. It is obvious, however, that in order to evaluate performance properties of an explosive in all of its applications it may be necessary to measure its velocity of detonation under a number of conditions in which the velocity of detonation is far from the maximum ""ideal"" velocity.. Under certain-conditions the velocity of detonation may even,be,different at different points in the explosive.It is .relatively simple to determine the velocity of detonation of an explosive under a. standard set of conditions if one is free to use large quantities of the explosive and to form it into a convenient shape. Under these circumstances; one can use a thin column of explosive a meter or more in length. The time required for an explosion to travel the length of the column will not be less,of the order a few ten-thousandths of a second and can be readily and accurately measured .by means of the standard spark chronograph or by photographing the explosion with a rotating-drum camera. However in many applications the explosive charge may be of relatively small dimensions arid may not be in a form convenient for making velocity measurements and often may be enclosed in a case or other confining medium. It may be necessary to determine the velocity of detonation over distances of the order of a few centimeters, in which case the time intervals to be measured will be extremely small. For example, the time required for an explosion to traverse 1 centimeter of tetryl is of the order of 1.5 microseconds.Since no satisfactory method of determining time intervals of the order of magnitude of a few microseconds within an explosive charge was available,, at least not for all conditions that might be encountered in practice, it was necessary to develop a special electronic chronoscope which is capable of measuring time intervals as small as a microsecond with a fair degree of accuracy. This report describes the chronoscope and its application to measurements of velocities of detonation in explosives."

This publication presents abstracts of articles and investigations pertaining to the utilization of fly ash. The terms "fly ash" and "flue. ash," as' used in most of the papers, refer to the ash from pulverized-coal firing collected by electrostatic precipitators or mechanical collectors. Several investigators do not define the material on which they report beyond calling it fly ash, but they probably refer to the fine material resulting from burning pulverized coal. A few of the papers report on investigations involving not only the use of fly ash but boiler slag as well. These can be identified by the title of the articles. Bibliographical information and the abstracts are arranged according to the date the papers were published, with the most recent listed first. With the continually increasing use of pulverized-coal firing, profitable disposal of the fly ash is becoming a problem of greater importance to many utility and industrial companies. Also, in recent years, the public demand for cleaner air, and the more highly efficient fly-ash collectors available have resulted in the collection of a greater percentage of the fly ash produced. The solution to better utilization of fly ash has, therefore, been the object of research for some years.

A primary, function of the Bureau of Mines is to encourage elimination of waste and the most profitable use of mineral raw materials. In line with this objective the Bureau has frequently stressed the importance of waste utilization at stone quarries. From time to tine studies both technical and economic in character have been made of problems pertaining to the most efficient use of natural, stone, particularly that which may be classed as a by-product of the higher grades of dimension stone. Every quarry producing ornamental or building stone yields large quantities of material that for one reason or another is unsuited for high-grade products, even though a great deal of work has been expended upon it more or less unavoidably. It is obviously good judgment to sell this odd-sized or off-grade stone at whatever price can be obtained rather than to spend more money to place it on the waste dump. In many cases, however, a really profitable side line has been developed.

The tungsten properties of Lincoln Mines, Inc., and North Tem Piute Mining and Development Co. were first explored by the Bureau of Mines in 1942. Work on the project comprised trenching, sampling, a small amount of road and trail construction, and a small amount of core drilling. From April 13 to December 10, 1944, additional diamond drilling was done by the Bureau of Mines to test the lateral and downward extensions of the various tactite zones along the contact south of the Lincoln mine, including the property of the North Tem Piute Mining & Development Co. Claims leased by the Lincoln Mites, Inc., are in secs. 25 and 36, T. 3 S., R. 56 E.; secs. 30 and 31, T. 3 S., R. 57' E.; and sec. 1, T. 4 S., 56 E., M. D. The range of composition of gases synthesized from solid fuels which are exchangeable with natural gas on current gas appliances was evaluated by theoretical principles. These principles consider primarily the flashback, blowoff, and yellow-tipping characteristics of air-entraining burner flames. It was found that complete identity between the synthetic and natural product is not necessary. Gases such as may be obtained by hydrogasification of coal and other solid fuels without the removal of unreacted hydrogen offer advantages in flame characteristics. Between 25 to 37 percent hydrogen can be tolerated in the sendout gas.

The Sago Mine Disaster, on January 2, 2006, placed renewed focus on several different aspects of safety in the underground coal mining industry. One area which received increased attention since Sago and other underground coal mining events is the concept of Safety Culture. This report describes the results of a pilot Safety Culture Assessment implemented at a small Appalachian underground coal mine, hereafter referred to as the Mine. The purposes of this pilot assessment were to (a) evaluate the feasibility and usefulness of a methodology for assessing safety culture that had previously been developed for use within other industries, (b) to initiate an investigation into the understanding and defining of the existing safety culture of the underground coal mining industry, and (c) provide meaningful and useful recommendations for the participating mine for their consideration in their ongoing quest to enhance their existing safety culture. This pilot assessment was conducted in July 2007. The report provides information regarding the presence or absence of safety culture characteristics within the Mine. Observations regarding the characteristics of the Mine?s safety culture that should be sustained are presented. Areas in need of attention and management focus to improve the Mine?s safety culture are presented as well as recommendations for moving forward. Safety culture characteristics that are important for the existence of a positive safety culture have been identified to include: - Safety is a clearly recognized value in the organization. - Accountability for safety in the organization is clear. - Safety is integrated into all activities in the organization. - A safety leadership process exists in the organization. - Safety culture is learning driven in the organization. - A process for establishing a strong and effective Safety Conscious Work Environment (SCWE) is in place. Performance objectives are associated with each of the safety culture characteristics and particular behaviors and attitudes have been identified that can be measured to evaluate these objectives. Using a methodology originally developed with the support of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an assessment of selected organizational behaviors and attitudes was conducted to evaluate the Mine in terms of these safety culture characteristics and their associated performance objectives. The methodology involves obtaining a variety of quantitative and qualitative information, using multiple data-gathering methods. The information collected is largely based upon the perceptions of the individuals in the organization. The evaluation is a ?point in time? snapshot of the Mine, but cultural beliefs and assumptions do not change quickly. The feasibility and usefulness of the methodology was successfully demonstrated during this pilot assessment. The methods used and the funds available for the development and oper- ation of shall mines and the reopening of small abandoned mines frequently present problems that tax the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the mining engineer far beyond that required in the mass production from large deposits. The objective of this paper is to describe in considerable detail the means whereby engineers have solved local problems in reopening an abandoned mine at which equipment, facilities, and funds were limited... The Etowah Coal & Iron Co. Gadsden red-iron-ore mine at Gadsden, Ala., 18 of interest in this category since it is the only independent red-ore mine under active development in the State. All other red-ore mines in Alabama are owned or controlled by the large iron or steel companies. The The mine, located on the southwest end of Shinbone Ridge in the outskirts of Gadsden lies in an ares once productive. but now idle, for many years. ore is relatively highgrade compared with that in the Birmingham area, but the bed is thin and somewhat lenticular. The presence of a large blast furnace at Alabama City, 3 miles from Gadsden, and the growing scarcity of red-iron ore supplies for it offered inducements for reopening the mine in 1946. Up to the time this circular was prepared (1947) only a small quantity of ore (about 1,500 tons) has been produced and shipped to the furnace. A force of 14 men was employed in sinking the main slope and developing a third "lift" (a local term for level) 100 feet below the old mine workings.

"The fly-ash problem of the smoke-abatement engineer - who now might well be titled, ""Smoke and Fly-Ash Abatement Engineer"" - starts with the necessity for him to know what fly ash really is, what plants really create it, and how much is being created. Fly ash in this connection may be defined as all solid particles emitted to the atmosphere as a result of the combustion of fuel.COMPOSITION OF FLY ASHMuch can be learned about fly ash by studying samples with a strong magnifying glass or, preferably, a high-power microscope. As an example, figure 1 is a photomicrograph of an underfeed-stoker fly ash weighing 23.7 pounds per cubic foot, which passed a baffle-type cinder catcher and was caught by a Cottrell precipitator. Figure 2 shows a similar fly ash made at a higher stoker rating and weighing 36.2 pounds per cubic foot. The lighter ash contains more light, unconsolidated ash than the heavier. In both instances some of the ash has been fused to a glass, as is indicated by the spherical particles resembling marbles; however, the heavier dust contains more and larger spheres. With the faster burning and higher air pressures occurring at the higher burning rates, more of the larger fused spheres reached the precipitator.Such studies of fly ash frequently make possible correct determination of its source. For example, the Supreme Court Building, one of the finest of the Federal buildings in Washington, was having considerable difficulty with fly ash from some outside plant. It was thought to come from a nearby apartment house. A fly-ash trap was installed there, and care was taken in the operation of their underfeed stokers. The fly-ash nuisance continued. Microscopic examination of the fly ash found about the building compared with samples taken from the stack of the apartment house showed to the surprise of the accusing building superintendent that the present source was elsewhere. By the same means, the source was found to be a plant about ore-half mile away."

A gas well has a certain definite capacity to deliver gas from the gas sand through the producing string of pipe. This capacity depends upon the pressures in the sand; that is, a well will deliver gas at a rate of flow which is determined by the formation or "shut-inn pressure in the sand and the back pressure at the face of the sand in the well. The three factors, rate of flow, formation or "shut-in" pressure, and the back pressure, for a given well, can be written into a fundamental relation which is strictly applicable only to that well. This relation can be used to determine the capacity of the well to deliver gas from any formation pressure against any back pressure held at the f ace of the sand in the well. Studies have been made of the deliveries of 400 gas wells operating under different conditions of pressure, Most of the wells which have been studied are in Osage County, Okla.; however, several representative studies have been made on wells in southern Louisiana, southern Texas, the Texas Panhandle, and West Virginia.

The discovery of porphyries in petroleum by Treibs (17-19) is one of the most significant achievements relating to the origin of petroleum. The presence of these remnants of chlorophyll and hematin in petroleum has immediate practical interest in several aspects of the petroleum industry. Because of their interfacial activities and film-forming tendencies, the metal-porphyrin complexes may be expected to affect the wettability of petroleum-reservoir rock surfaces and influence the flow of fluids in these reservoirs. Also, studies of the relationship of trace elements and porphyrins in petroleum may be expected to yield valuable information on source beds and petroleum migration. Finally, the extreme stability of several metal-porphyrin complexes complicates removal of these metals from some petroleum stocks where they exert deleterious effects on processing and utilization. Metal-porphyrin complexes are commonly associated with the asphaltic residues of crude oils in which they occur (8, 9, 15). However, investigations in this and another laboratory (15) show that small amounts of these complexes often remain in partly refined petroleum products, such as thermally cracked distillates and deasphalted stocks.

In connection with the cooperative metal-mine dust and ventilation investigations of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the U. S. Public Health Service , some underground data have been obtained with intent to ascertain the adaptability of the katathermometer for determining the comfort of working places in mines . This preliminary study indicates that the instrument will probably be useful for making routine determinations of comfort conditions in our mines , and that it may also prove an important accessory for investigative work on problems in ventilation and kindred subjects ; in both coal and metal mines , although the instrument should probably be altered somewhat for maximum utility under the varied conditions in the mines of the United States . The katathermometer is an instrument contrived by Dr. Leonard Hill , an eminent English physiologist , and its various features have been fully described by him in his book entitled " The Science of Ventilation and Open Air Treatment . " He made exhaustive experiments and concluded that the rate of cooling of the human body was the controlling factor in determining comfort or discomfort , and then set out to make an instrument that would measure this rate of cooling . The resulting instrument the katathermometer measures its own rate of cooling when its temperature approximates that of the human body and thus serves as an index of the rate of cooling of the body itself . - The instrument consists of an alcohol thermometer having a cylindrical bulb 1 inches long and 3/4 inches in diameter, and a stem about 8 inches long graduated from 95 to 100° F. This temperature range gives a mean temperature of 97.5° F. ( 36.5° C. ) , which is approximately that of the clothed body surface . The stem terminates in a small reservoir which serves the double purpose of acting as a safety overflow in case of overheating the bulb , and of insuring a regular rate of cooling by the time the meniscus has fallen to the 1000 point .

This publication describes the control of fires in inactive coal deposits in the Western United States, including Alaska by the Bureau of Mines. Material presented should contribute to a better understanding of the purpose, process, and benefits of the program. Forty fires were extinguished or controlled in the Western United States and Alaska from 1948 to 1958 under a national program directed by the Bureau's Health and Safety activity. Thirty-five fires were controlled by smothering; three were controlled by the isolation method; and two were extinguished by removing the burning coal, smothering it with incombustible material, and backfilling the fire zone. The fire-control projects were distributed as follows: Alaska 2, Arizona 1, Colorado 9, Montana 9, New Mexico 4, Utah 2, and Wyoming 13. The total cost of the 40 fires extinguished or controlled was $1,203,957. Of this cost, 12.8 percent was engineering and administrative and 87.2 percent was contractual services.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the mineralogy, tonnage, and beneficiating characteristics of oxidized (nonmagnetic) taconite iron resources of the Western Mesabi Range as part of its program to insure adequate future domestic mineral supplies. Magnetic taconite currently provides about 95 pct of Mesabi production, but the large tonnages of oxidized taconite between the magnetic deposits will be needed to help meet future domestic demand for iron ore. Three bulk samples that represent large tonnages from the Western Mesabi Range were selected to determine their mineral composition and liberation by light optical microscopy and to test their beneficiating response. This report describes the mineralogy and liberation characteristics of the three samples of the Biwabik Iron-Formation for 26.5 mi (42.7 kID) from Keewatin to Grand Rapids, MN. (Details of response to beneficia-tion were reported previously.) The samples represent mostly material from the Lower Cherty Member of the Biwabik-Iron Formation, although one sample included some Upper Cherty Member. Minerals of all three samples were quartz (chert), hematite, goethite, and minor to trace amounts of magnetite, iron carbonate, and iron silicates. It was concluded that the oxidized taconites of the Western Mesabi Range represent a subeconomic indicated resource that can be selectively mined and beneficiated as a future large source of iron feed for steelmaking.

This report describes the results of a reconnaissance survey of areas in California and Nevada considered favorable to beryllium mineralization. Pegmatite dikes, veins, intrusive sills, contact metamorphic, and disseminated deposits as well as tactite deposits in the former major tungsten-producing districts were investigated. A general geographic pattern of beryllium mineralization was found to be concentrated along a wide belt in eastern Nevada extending from the Ruby Mountains, Elko County, south through the Fish Creek Range, Eureka County, the Snake Range, White Pine County to the Virgin Mountains in Clark County, Nev., and Mohave County, Ariz. Sporadic occurrences of beryllium are in central and southern Nevada, and in the pegmatite dikes of San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego Counties, Calif., and the granite masses of the southern Inyo Mountains, Inyo County, Calif. Principal company activities are centered in the Snake Range, Fish Creek Range, and the Virgin Mountains, Nev., and the Inyo Mountains, Calif. Other areas in California and Nevada have been superficially explored with results indicating either limited or widespread, but submarginal, mineralization. Although beryllium was found to occur, to some extent, in many of the deposits, mining has been hindered by the lack of a market for beryllium ores and concentrates other than standard-grade beryl and also by the erratic pattern of mineralization and the high exploration and beneficiation costs required to produce a marketable product.
