To provide insights for the optimization of ventilation systems for U.S. underground coal mines facing both methane control and spontaneous combustion issues, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study was conducted to model the potential for spontaneous heating in longwall gob areas. A two longwall panel district using a bleeder ventilation system with a stationary longwall face was simulated. The permeability and porosity profiles for the longwall gob were generated from a geotechnical model and were used as inputs for the CFD modeling. In this study, the effect of methane emissions from the mined coal seam, including the longwall face and overlying rider seam reservoirs on the gob gas distribution was considered. The spontaneous heating is modeled as the low-temperature oxidation of coal in the gob using kinetic data obtained from previous laboratory-scale spontaneous-combustion studies. Unsteady state simulations were conducted, and the effects of the coal’s apparent activation energy and reaction surface area on the spontaneous heating process were also examined.1

Much has been published by various investigators on the use of activated carbon for adsorbing precious metals from cyanide solution and pulp. For the benefit of the reader, a list of these earlier publications appears at the end of this report. The present paper deals only with a process for extracting gold from gold-laden carbon and re-use of the de-adsorbed carbon. At the Getchell mine, Redhouse, Nev., experiments have been in progress for several years concerning the use of activated carbon to adsorb gold from their slime circuit pulp. The experimental work has been successful. Their practice has been to ship the gold-laden carbon to a smelter for treatment, which meant the total loss of the carbon in addition to smelter and freight, charges, all of which proved costly and wasteful.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the potential of in situ leach mining a variety of Cu, Mn, and Au-Ag ores. Geologic characterization of ore samples from laboratory leaching experiments is conducted both prior to and after leaching to assess the effects of leaching on the chemistry, mineralogy, and texture of the rocks. The identification and chemical compositions of ore, gangue, and reaction products are determined by a combination of techniques such as reflected and transmitted light microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, electron microprobe analysis, and backscattered electron imaging with scanning electron microscopy. The distribution of the desired metal in various mineral phases can be illustrated using elemental X-ray maps. The potential of reactive gangue minerals to rob Cu from leach solutions is investigated with the aid of transmission electron microscopy. Porosity and permeability are measured to determine how effectively the host rock can transmit leach solution. Textural relationships between ore, gangue, secondary reaction products, and fluid channelways are determined by petrographic examination and are documented by optical photomicrographs and secondary electron imaging. Representative sample selection is described, and several epoxy impregnation and sample mounting techniques are discussed.

The monoclinic to tetragonal inversion of zirconium dioxide was studied by single-crystal X-ray methods, high-temperature X-ray diffractometry, and differential thermal analysis. The unusual features of the inversion, such as no definite transition Lperature, hysteresis, and athermal kinetics, were confirmed for powders who mean crystallite size was greater than 1,000 A. Samples of mean crystallite size below 1,000 A displayed classical kinetics, obeying a logarithmic rate law. A detailed mechanism based on Ubbelohde&apos;s theory of continuous phase transformations was proposed which is consistent with all the experimental facts.

Geology and oil-yield data are presented for a 58-square-mile area encompassing the U.S. Department of the Interior oil-shale leasing program tracts in the western Washakie Basin, Sweetwater County, Wyo. Lithology and oil yields of samples from three Bureau of Mines coreholes are evaluated and correlated with Kinney Rim surface sections measured and sampled by the U.S. Geological Survey. Minable sections of oil shale averaging up to 25 gallons of oil per ton crop out on Kinney Rim in the Laney Member of the Green River Formation. Thick oil-shale sections in the Laney Member that average 15 gallons per ton represent 155 million barrels of oil in place per square mile. In the lower part of the Green River Formation the Tipton Shale Member contains a 20-to 40-foot section averaging 15 gallons per ton. Beds of high-volatile C bituminous coal up to 6 feet thick are present in intertongued parts of the lower Green River Formation and upper Wasatch Formation.

The prevention of accidents from falls of roof and coal requires a considerable amount of personal judgment , for conditions are different even in adjoining working places in the same mine , and conditions may change from hour to hour even in the same working place as the coal is shot down and loaded . Experience has shown that many men can not or do not exercise enough care to protect themselves from injuries ; moreover , where the foremen have been made directly responsible for the safety of the men under them , accidents from falls of roof and coal have , in many instances , been reduced as much as 50 per cent . There is now no question that careful , constant , and intensive supervision is essential in preventing acci- { dents and more especially accidents of this class . Falls of roof and of coal account for approximately 50 per cent of all coal mine accidents and annually result in the death of approximately 1,000 men and cause lost - time injury to approximately 50,000 men . These and other accidents are recurring with little or no diminution , usually not because of the lack of knowledge of safe and dangerous practices , or of the technique of safety , but largely because of the lukewarm interest of major executives in safety or the failure of mine officials to formulate and to enforce common - sense rules and regulations . When failure is the outcome of a sincere attempt of the managing officials to teach safety to the miner , the fault may usually be attributed to misguided effort . Various solutions for the problem of eliminating accidents from falls of roof or coal have been suggested , some of which are : Standard system of timbering for the specified mining districts ; departure from the room-and - pillar system to a more concentrated system of mining ; more intensive supervision - that is , 1 section foreman for every 25 loaders instead of 1 section foreman for 75 , 80 , or even more loaders the practice in most mining districts . - However , investigations conducted by the writer at numerous mines operated by a number of mining companies in several districts show that employees and officials alike are inclined to work under loose and unsupported roof , relying solely on the " drummy " sound and on their judgment and experience as to whether the roof will stay in place for one hour or for several hours . With but few exceptions , men who had been injured by falls of roof or ccal or were found working under loose and unsupported roof , admitted that they knew of the possibly unsafe condition , but it was their opinion that the roof or coal was not loose enough to fall for some time .

Statistical methods applied at the Bureau of Mines Denver Mining Research Center to data from metallic ore bodies were used to evaluate lignite reserves from core data and to predict the extent of lignite horizons in some Texas lignite beds. Six lignite seam units were studied using data from 361 drill holes. The data indicate a total of 214.2 million tons of lignite in the area examined, and probable reserves of 113 million tons in an area 2,000 feet beyond the limits established by the drill holes. It was demonstrated that lignite reserves present in lenticular beds could be reliably determined by statistical techniques, and that core drilling could be optimized to maximum information with minimum drill holes. The technique described is applicable to other coal beds.

The emphasis is on the measurement procedure and the interpretation of the measurement rather than on the instrument itself.] The failure to properly sample for methane is a major contributing factor to methane explosion risk. Sampling errors are most likely to occur at mines or tunnels where the presence of methane is not suspected or during nonroutine tasks at mines or tunnels known to have gas. More specific information on methane sampling at continuous miner sections is in Chapter 3. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss sampling at longwall sections, and Chapter 14 discusses sampling at tunnels. METHANE DETECTORS FOR MINING Many models of gas detectors are available to measure methane concentrations, as well as most of the other contaminant gases found in mines and tunnels. An example is the iTX Multi-Gas Monitor, a portable gas detector available from Industrial Scientific Corp., Oakdale, PA. This handheld instrument measures several gases simultaneously. The cost (2004) ranges from $1,300 to $2,200, depending on the number of gases measured. Similar instruments are available from other manufacturers. Most methane detectors used in mining use a catalytic heat of combustion sensor to detect methane and other combustible gases. These have been proven through many years of reliable operation. "An eight-stage cascade impactor, with cut-sizes ranging from 0.056 to 18 um at a flow rate of 30 L/min, has been developed, calibrated, and tested in field programs. This impactor, called a microorifice uniform deposit impactor, has several features not normally found in cascade impactors. Ultrafine particles as small as 0.056 um are collected while keeping the pressure drop moderate by utilizing multiple nozzles (up to 2000) as small as 52 um in diameter. At each stage the collected particles are deposited uniformly over the entire impaction plate by rotating the impaction plate relative to the nozzles and by the correct radial placement of the nozzles. The particle cutoff characteristics (collection efficiency curves) of each stage and inter-stage losses were determined by means of monodisperse aerosols. The cutoff characteristics were found to be sharp and similar for all stages.Inertial impactors are widely used for the size-selective collection of aerosol particles. One reason for their wide usage is that the principle of operation is simple: a jet of particle-laden air is directed at a flat impaction plate. Large particles are collected on the plate while smaller particles follow the airflow out of the impaction region and are not collected. The division between the size of particles collected and those that are not is quite sharp. Secondly, the particles in an impactor are classified by their aerodynamic diameter (an important size parameter in many fields of study, including those related to respirable particle health effects). Thirdly, it is easy to collect particles in discrete size ranges by passing the aerosol through a number of stages (one stage consisting of a nozzle and impaction plae) in series, with each subsequent stage collecting particles smaller than the one before it. This is known as a cascade impactor. Finally, impactors can classify particles over a wide range of particle sizes: as low as 0.005 um (Fernandez de la Mora et al., 1990) and as large as approximately 50 um (Vanderpool et al., 1987).This paper describes a general purpose cascade impactor that has been developed in our laboratory and used in a variety of studies including visibility studies (McMurry et al., 1986; McMurry and Zhang, 1989), underground mine studies (Marple et al., 1986; Rubow and Marple, 1988; Rubow et al., 1988), and general atmospheric pollution studies (Macias et al., 1981; Dzubay et al., 1984). The impactor, called a microorifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI model 100, MSP Corp., Minneapolis, Minn.), is the integration of two earlier impactor de¬velopments: the microorifice impactor (M01) (Kuhlmey et al., 1981) and the uniform deposit impactor (UDI) (Marple et al., 1981).The MOUDI has several features normally not found in other cascade impactors. These include collection of particles as small as 0.056 um in aerodynamic diameter with a moderate pressure drop, uniform particle collection on the impaction plates, inter-changeable impaction plates to allow for the plates to be easily and quickly changed in the field, and covers for these substrates to provide a means for safe storage and/or transport of the collected particles to the laboratory for analysis."

Low-carbon shales from 65 deposits and 11 sources of coal-mine waste in western Oregon and Washington were tested in a rotary kiln for their suitability as raw material for expanded aggregate. Shales from 41 sources bloated enough to produce crushed, expanded aggregates, weighing less than 65 pounds per cubic foot in the preliminary tests. The samples were judged on the basis of processing qualities, physical properties, and size and uniformity of the source. Nine low-carbon shale deposits and three coal-mine waste sources were selected for more extensive bloating tests and for examination of the expanded aggregates in concrete shapes. Composite samples from these 12 sources and from 2 commercial operations, when processed for testing in concrete shapes, had bulk densities ranging from 37.S to 72.9 pounds per cubic foot. Damp-cured concrete shapes made with these aggregates had bulk densities ranging from S6 to 119 pounds per cubic foot, and all but three of the lightweight concretes had crushing strengths ranging from 3,270 to 6,810 p.s.i. Properties of the lightweight concretes were compared with those of concrete shapes made with commercial aggregates, and with sand and gravel.

Underground mining methods at the Gray mine of Tri-State Zinc, Inc., are of special interest because of the low unit costs achieved through use of jumbos and loading equipment mounted un crawler-type tracks and of diesel trucks that haul from the stoping areas to the mill through inclined adits. The operating company, Tri-State Zinc, Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gold Fields American Development Co., Ltd., the latter being the American branch of New Consolidated Gold Fields, Ltd., a British-owned company.

"INTRODUCTION The United States, although the leading consumer of chromite, depends almost entirely on imports for its supply. For instance, the consumption during. 1941 amounted to 714,645 long tons, whereas the domestic chromite production, although the highest since 1918, was 12,731 long tons or only 1.78 percent of the domestic consumption. 9/ Domestic production was tremendously, accelerated,after 1941 by war demands; however, only a small proportion of this domestic product was of sufficient quality to be substituted for the high-grade imported chromite demanded for metallurgical purpose. Chromite is used largely for making ferrochromium, an alloy containing 60 to 70 percent chromium which is used in making alloy steels. Peacetime specification for ferrochromium required that it should contain 68 to 69 percent chromium. These specification were lowered to between 60 and 63 percent, chromium in 1941 to permit the use of lower-grade ores. The specifications for metallurgical chromite, used for making ferrochromium, were established first by the Metals Reserve Company at 48 percent Cr203 and a Cr. Fe. ratio of 3 : 1 but later were lowered to 45 percent Cr203 and a Cr : Fe ratio of 2.5 : 1. The ratio of chromium to iron in chromite is important, because the contained iron enters the alloy in making ferrochromium and, although an ore may contain the required 45 percent Cr203, it may contain too much to be suitable for ferrochromium production. The principal sources of domestic chromite are California, Oregon, Montana, and Alaska minor, small, and widely scattered deposits in another dozen States. Without exception, these deposits are low-grade, require beneficiation to produce a commercial product, and are not competitive with imported high-grade ore in normal times. Nevertheless, these deposits form strategic reserve, which must be utilized in periods of national emergency. Recognizing this fact; the Bureau of Mines for many years has undertaken investigations to develop methods of utilizing domestic chromite ores. The problem has been approached from three angles: (1) Mechanical methods of concentration; (2) beneficiation by chemical or metal¬lurgical methods; and (3) production of metallic chromium by electrolysis of solutions prepared from ore or concentrate."

Scrap beryllium chips ( nominally 96 to 97 percent Be ) were electrore fined in a prototype cell with 408 lb of electrolyte composed of 52.4 mole - percent LiCl , 36.3 mole - percent KC1 , and 11.3 mole - percent BeCl2 . The cell temperature was 500 ° C. In a typical 10-3 /4 - hour deposition cycle , 0.415 pound of metal was produced ; the metal contained impurities in parts per million as follows : C , 700 ; 0 , 610 ; Al , 34 ; Ca , 32 ; Cu , 20 ; Fe , 25 ; Mg , 9 ; and Mn , 23 . Operation of the prototype cell for 2 years demonstrated that adapting the electrorefining process to an enlarged scale of operation presented few difficulties in mechanical functions , maintenance of optimum operating conditions , and control of product purity . After the spent anode feed was leached in a 5 - percent nitric acid solution and the fine - sized particles were removed , it was recycled in some tests . The metal produced was somewhat higher in impurities than metal from the fresh scrap chips .

The Bureau of Mines developed and tested in the laboratory several innovative techniques for reclaiming used lubricating oil. These processes included percolation through both chemically treated clay and ion-exchange resins, distillation through batch and continuous wiped-wall vacuum apparatus, treatment with solvent extraction systems, and chemical removal of impurities with chelating agents. In each treatment, the criteria of evaluation was oil recovery and reduction of acidic and metallic components. Both vacuum distillation and solvent treatment ranked high in their abilities to remove acidic and metallic components of the used oil with good oil recoveries. A combination of the two techniques gave the best overall results in terms of quality evaluations made by established bench tests. The methods were not ranked according to economic practicablity.
