This study forms a part of Bureau of Mines continuing research on thermal fragmentation of rocks. The potential of internal heating techniques for rock fragmentation is discussed. A concept of rock fragmentation with rapid inter¬nal heating of a localized inner volume of rock is advanced The energy required for rock fragmentation is made available by creating a required vol¬ume of localized heating. The fragmentation of rock using the proposed method is analyzed and qualitatively compared with the results of experiments with Charcoal granite, Dresser basalt, and Sioux Quartzite. High frequency dielec¬tric heating below 100 MHz is used in the study as an example to examine the working of the concept. The selection of operating conditions for the experi¬mental heating is explained. Fragmentation of Charcoal granite and Dresser basalt test rock blocks is achieved for localized heating below 550° C. The heated volume required for fragmentation is observed to be less than 2 percent of the test block volume and the electrical energy consumption is in the order of 3.5 to 6 5 kwhr/m3 The method offers a possibility for in situ fragmenta¬tion of rocks, favorable for internal heating. The method is highly dependent on rock properties governing internal heat generation The efficiency of dielectric heating in the experimental study is observed to increase with increasing dielectric loss of the rock material, ranging from about 10 percent in Sioux. As part of its goal to help maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating a fused-salt electrolytic procedure for producing zinc metal. A previous report described preliminary, small-scale work on the fused-salt electrolysis of ZnC12. The present report covers a more detailed investigation of the properties of ZnC12-alkali metal chloride electrolyte systems in relation to the production of zinc metal and also discusses electrolysis in largescale, internally heated cells. The effect of composition on bath stability, current efficiency, cell voltage, and liquidus temperature was determined for the ZnCla-NaC1-KC1, ZnC12-NaC1-LiC1, and ZnC12-KC1-LiC1 electrolyte systems. An electrolyte com-posed of 38 mole-pct ZnC12, 31 mole-pct NaC1, and 31 mole-pct KC1 gave the best overall results. Sludge (ZnO) formation in the ZnC12-NaC1-KC1, ZnC12-KC1-LiC1, and ZnC12-KC1 systems was investigated during prolonged electrolysis. The ZnC12-KC1-NaC1 electrolyte showed the least sludge formation. A 1,500-amp cell was operated using the ZnC12-NaC1-KC1 electrolyte at 500° C. Zinc metal was produced at the rate of 4.0 lb/hr with a current efficiency of 95 pct.

"Researchers at The Pennsylvania State University are engaged in a project to understand the mechanics of respirable size fragment formation in coal. The project is based on the premise that a thorough understanding of the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation may lead to techniques for reduction and better control of coal dust problems in mines. Presently, it is believed that the mode of fracture propagation which can range from pure tensile to pure shear or any mixed mode in between and the loading or displacement rate can influence the amount of respirable size fragments that are generated on new fracture surfaces during the fracture propagation process The essence of any coal cutting process is one of mixed mode fracture propagation. To study the crack propagation process, a unique mixed mode testing rig was designed and fabricated. This rig is capable of applying loads to a prenotched test specimen that range from pure Mode I (tensile mode) to nearly pure Mode II (shear mode) or many mixed mode loading combinations. It is also possible to apply different loading or displacement rates to the test specimen. With this rig, it is possible to create new fracture surfaces via the different fracture modes and under various loading conditions.These new fracture surfaces are examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to characterize the amount of structural damage and respirable size fragment formation that occurs during the fracture process. Initial observations suggest that the amount of fine fragment formation and the new fracture surface appearance is related to the fracture initiation conditions, particularly the fracture mode and the loading rate. Mode II loading and higher loading rates seem to generate more structural damage and respirable size fragment formation that Mode 1 loading at slower rates.With the mixed mode test rig, the mechanics of fracture initiation for a single crack can be controlled to better understand its influence on respirable size fragment formation. Such understanding may lead to methods which characterize the tendency of specific coal seams to produce undesirable fine fragments during the fracture process, or it may lead to rational recommendations and design guidelines or coal mining machines which inherently produce less dust.IntroductionAs part of a larger effort to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (black lung) in coal miners, researchers at The Pennsylvania State University are engaged in a project to understand the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal. This project is part of a com¬prehensive research effort within the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust which is jointly administered by The Pennsylvania State University and West Virginia University.The principal source of the coal dust in underground mining is the cutting operation. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and various European research organizations have conducted investigations into the mechanics of coal cutting for many years. These studies of airborne respirable dust (ARD) formation have concentrated on empirical studies of the various cutting parameters and their effect on ARD for¬mation. The parameters study include depth of cut, cutting speed and bit spacing.(1,2) Other studies investigated the effect of symmetric and asymmetric bit wear and various bit geometries and designs (3-5) Roepke(6) summarized the principals of proper coal cutting to minimize dust formation by recommending to ""cut at maximum depth (maximum advance rate) at all times, at minimum RPM, with the fewest possible bits, having the lowest possible included tip angle."" As a part of the program of promoting the conservation and efficient utilization of petroleum, studies are being made by engineers of the Bureau of Mines on secondary oil-recovery projects throughout the United States. In furthering that aim, engineering data concerning the reservoirs, methods of stimulating the production of oil, and other pertinent facts are collected, studied, and subsequently published so that others may profit by the experience gained. This report presents the results of a study made by engineers of the Franklin, Pa., office of the Bureau of Mines of secondary oil-recovery operations in the Boggs field, Spencer district, Roane County, W. Va., whore natural gas is injected into the reservoir to stimulate the production of oil from a so-called stripper field. The Boggs field, like most others in the Appalachian region, is one in which the major part of the natural energy that caused oil to flow through the reservoir to the producing wells during the primary stage of oil production has been dissipated. For all practical purposes, most of the oil produced in the Appalachian region at the present time can be considered to be from stripper fields. Consequently, secondary recovery methods are being used extensively in the oil-producing areas of New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky for recovering some of the oil that was not produced by primary production methods.

Domestic expenditures by the U.S. petroleum industry have exhibited distinctive shifts in emphasis over the past 20 years. From the end of World War II to 1955, expenditures for all phases of the industry expanded. Although over one-half of all expenditures were for production, the relative emphasis was changed after 1956-58 from production toward processing and marketing. The period 1967-69 marked the beginning of a return to emphasis on exploration and production. These trends in expenditure patterns are logical and rational when related to domestic and international economic conditions and to the widespread application of improved production technology. As the immense job of developing the oil resources of Alaska and other regions begins, the petroleum industry will continue to turn to external sources for working capital. Long-term debt will probably be the principal method of external financing through 1970, but a definite shift toward new common and preferred stocks will be made. Higher product prices may be sought by the petroleum industry, but the economics of crude-oil production, changes in the tax structure, and possible changes in the oil imports control program make the price structure of crude oil and crude-oil products unpredictable at the present time.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing quarrying methods and costs at stone quarries throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scrope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents the results of structural analyses and full-scale physical tests conducted on a steel-set arch and tri-set. The purpose of the analyses and tests was to evaluate the suitability of these structures for use in roof-fall prone areas. The arch canopy test and design procedures previously developed by the Bureau were utilized in this evaluation. Theoretical resistance functions were established for the steel-set arch and tri-set and were representative of the experimental behavior of the structures. The resistance functions were used to determine the energy absorption capacity of the structures and to predict their dynamic response to impact loading. The dynamic tests demonstrated that the arch canopy design procedure is appropriate for tri-sets and yields conservative designs for both steel-set arches and tri-sets. As a result of this work, it is recommended that these two structures may be considered for use in roof-fall prone areas and for rehabilitation work, provided the arch canopy design procedure is utilized for each application and the principles underlying the design procedure are understood.

The Torpedo Copper mine in the Organ Mining District, Dona Ana County, N. Mex., was discovered In 1899. Production was begun immediately and continued until 1907. Since 1907 very little ore has been produced, although Many individuals and companies have been interested in the property at one time or another. Approximately 6,621 feet of diamond-core had been completed on the property before 1949. The results from some of this drilling were unsatisfactory because of the poor core recovery. In addition to its investigation of the Torpedo ore deposits, attention was given by the Bureau of Mines to obtaining better core recovery through the use of special equipment and techniques. This project was begun October 3, 1949, and was completed April 30, 1950. Four diamond-drill holes totaling 2,140.5 feet, which includes 18.2 feet of overlap in a deflected hole, were drilled. All drilling was done with a Government-owned hydraulic-feed drill with some special rods and core barrels, in addition to the usual equipment. The over-all core recovery was 89.5 percent. Omitting the drilling in overburden where little or no core was desired, the recovery was 94.6 percent. Core recovery in the ore zones averaged 95.2 percent. This paper describes the location, the general features of the area, the geology, the Bureau of Mines procedures, and the results attained by these procedures.

As a part of the United States Department of the Interior program for developing natural resources in Alaska, the Bureau of Mines studied the tin-bearing gold-placer deposits in the Tofty area of the Hot Springs district in central Alaska. The principal objective of the Bureau's work was to obtain facts about the extent and character of the placer deposits (including tailing) to indicate the economic or strategic tin-production potential of the Tofty "tin belt." A secondary objective was to determine (if possible) the bedrock Source of the cassiterite and other minerals found in the placer deposits. The placer phase of the work was begun in July 1954 and was continued during the 1955 and 1956 field seasons. Extensions to, and connections between, known placer channels were sought by 82 churn-drill holes. The Bureau drilling did not expand the placer deposits beyond the limits established by drift-mining operations and by previous drilling done by private concerns.

Land utilized by the mining industry from 1930 through 1971 amounted to 3.65 million acres, or 0.16 percent of the land mass in the United States. Land reclaimed during the same period was 1.46 million acres, or 40 percent of the land utilized. This report includes data on land use for wastes from underground and surface mining, for wastes from mill operations, and on subsidence. Data on land use and reclamation were obtained from operating companies, mining organizations, appropriate State agencies, and others concerned with such activities. The 10 leading States in land used for mining in 1971 were, in decreasing order, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Ohio, California, Florida, West Virginia, Illinois, Minnesota, and Indiana. Mineral commodities accounting for a major portion of land use are, in decreasing order, bituminous coal, sand and gravel, stone, copper, phosphate rock, iron ore, and clay; for coal, these commodities are produced principally by surface mining operations. Reclamation over the 42-year period was largely on lands utilized for surface mining of bituminous coal. New surface mining methods, particularly for coal, incorporate some form of land restoration.

This paper is one of a series on mining and milling method and costs being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Golden Messenger mine, operated by the United Gold Mines Corporation, is in the York-Confederate Gulch mining region in Luis and Clark County, Mont., 22 miles northeast of the city limits of Helena and about 1 mile north of the town of York. It is the first operation to exploit successfully the low-grade ores of the York-Confederate Gulch area. The unusual vein structure presents some mining problems that have been solved in ail interesting manner.

Hydrogen sulfide was decomposed to elemental sulfur in an electrical discharge. With He, N., or Ar diluents, a threshold voltage between 1 and 3 kV was required for the decomposition reaction to occur in a laboratory ozonizer. Above the threshold voltage, the HAS decomposition rate increased with increasing voltage, but the increase was more pronounced with argon diluent than with either nitrogen or helium. In common with other reactions in an electrical discharge, the B2S decomposition decreased with increasing temperature in the range of -410 to +61° C. The reaction did not appear to be rate-controlled by a solid-gas sorption step because the introduction of activated charcoal into the electrical discharge zone did not significantly affect the decomposition yield. In the presence of polymeric chlorofluoro-carbon oil, 90 pct conversion of the 3 pct H2S in helium was obtained at 14 kV, 60 Hz, a 2-mm electrode gap, and a gas-residence time greater than 1 min. Under the same experimental conditions in the absence of oil, the conversion was only about 50 pct.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated methods of separating valuable rare-earth materials from Fe in neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) magnet scrap. A selective oxidation treatment of the scrap oxidized the rare-earth portion while leaving elemental Fe. Magnetic and leaching procedures were tried for separating the metallic Fe and rare-earth oxides, but the extremely fine grain size of the oxidized scrap prevented recovery by either technique. The best separation of rare earths from bulk NdFeB magnet scrap was obtained by dissolution with H2S04 followed by precipitation of recyclable rare-earth salts. By precipitating neodymium-alkali sulfate double salts as an intermediate that can be converted to a variety of useful products, many materials-handling and economic disadvantages found with direct precipitation with fluoride or oxalate were avoided. Iron was removed from magnet leach solutions by precipitation as a jarosite, eliminating a major disposal problem. Research was also conducted with contaminated mixed SmCo5 and NdFeB swarf. Using a flotation-leaching technique allows the SmCo5 to concentrate in the froth, while the grinding-medium contaminant sinks and is removed as tailing. The NdFeB is dissolved by H2S04 during the process.

The Huber-Rydalch manganese property is in the Erickson mining district of Tooele County, Utah. The district covers the southern part of Simpson Mountains, a block rising abruptly above the surrounding desert floor (fig. 1). The Ruber-Rydalch deposits and other deposits in the Simpson Mountains manganese area were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers during 1940 and 1942 under the strategic minerals program. J. T. Pardee visited the district briefly in 1918. A. E. Granger and A. F. Shride, of the Federal Geological Survey, mapped the geology of the area in 1942 and 1943. The manganese deposits occur as veinlike masses in brecciated fault zones that traverse Cambrian and pre-Cambrian quartzite, quartzite conglomerate, and phyllite. The deposits now exposed near the surface represent the oxidized portions of primary mineralization originally containing rhodochrosite and rhodonite associated with quartz and calcite and small quantities of pyrite, galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite. The oxide ore is composed of manganite, pyrolusite, psilomelans, and wad in a gangue of quartz, calcite, and brecciated quartzite.

During the fiscal year ended September 30, 1932, there were 27 fatalities in the coal mines of Indiana. Four of this number occurred in small mines employing less than 10 men, over which the State Inspection Department has no jurisdiction. In addition to these coal mine fatalities, an explosives accident in a clay mine resulted fatally to one man. Tables 1 and 2, which follow, list the fatalities as to cause and occupation. This NIOSH Toolbox Training program contains 52 different modules designed to stimulate safety discussions among your employees. Each module is intended to be completed in roughly 10 or 15 minutes, so a Toolbox Training session can be conducted once a week for the entire year. Each session counts toward your employee’s 8-hour annual MSHA refresher training, thus saving an entire day of work.. The modules are used to refresh employees on the procedures, policies, and practices of working safely at a specific mine site and can easily be tailored to fit conditions and situations found on your property. Every module follows the same format, so that as the weeks pass, miners will start to approach every safety situation in the same way. A typical Toolbox Training session contains five basic steps that cover all the information in the module. 1. Identification of the hazard and discussions about the types of injuries typically associated with the hazard. 2. Discussions of some of the causes of the hazard. The MSHA example included with each module should be referenced. 3. After the hazard and accident has been explained and understood, discussions about best practices and tips for avoiding a similar accident. 4. Review of similar conditions or near misses from your mine site using the leading questions on the form to start a discussion. Specific examples of equipment or structures on the site that could lead to the same accident should be discussed. The blank space on the module is used to add your own remarks and questions to supplement the given information. 5. Miners fill out the training record on the back of the form with name, initials, and date of training session. The modules are designed to be kept in a standard three-ring binder and easily photocopied. This way, the same set of modules can be used for years to come. A blank form is included that can be used to create more Toolbox Training modules. The key component of Toolbox Training is to start a discussion among employees that will allow them to see the hazards around them every day and respond to these hazards in a safe and consistent manner. To start a discussion, ask questions that need more than a one-word response. Get the miners to talk about similar situations from their own experiences and give suggestions about how to fix the hazards around them. Toolbox Training is a quick and effective way to cover specific mining hazards, but it only works if miners are involved in the discussion.

"The Bureau of Mines receives and answers many requests for information on the qualities and properties of American coals, and also publishes many papers that deal with coal characteristics. Compilations of chemical analyses of coal from specific locations are contained in a series of technical papers,2/ by States, whereas typical analyses of coal seams, by States and counties, are given in data books, volumes 1 to 7,2/ by producing districts, as defined in the Bituminous Coal Act of 1937. Bulletin 446, ""Typical Analyses of Coals of the United States,"" condenses and supplements these data books, which do not apply to the Western States. Other coal properties are described in numerous publications listed in the Bureau of Mines Bibliography of Publications. However, no recent publication lists average B.t.u. values by rank on a Statewide and national scale. Averages have been estimated in the past, and some of them are included in this paper for comparison.The average and the ranges of as-received B.t.u. values of American coals on a Nation-wide basis, as found by the statistical method described in this paper, are given in table 2 and on a State-wide basis in table 3. The following is abstracted from table 2:In deriving average B.t.u. values for coals, the results depend on the type of data available and the methods of calculation. The data, or analyses, may represent any of three types of samples - mine, tipple, or delivered. In mine sampling, a channel cut is made of a vertical face of the coal bed, carefully excluding most of the impurities, and the material retained is the sample. It is readily seen that mine samples are selected samples and do not strictly represent the unmined coal bed, unless the coal contains no major impurities. Mine samples generally represent the best-quality coal that could be produced. In contrast to mine samples, tipple and delivered samples represent coal that actually has been mined, and their analyses may show either lower or higher values than mine samples of the same coal, depending on treatment and preparation after mining.Of the thousands of analyses accumulated by the Bureau of Mines, most are of either tipple or delivered samples and represent the coal after it has been mined. Any average calculated from this aggregate of data will, consequently, reflect coal that has been produced, and not unmined coal in situ.The method of calculating an average from the basic data also will have considerable influence. If there are three seams of coal in a county, the average analysis for the county is not necessarily the arithmetic mean of analyses of the three individual seams. For a probable average of unmined coal, the B.t.u. values of each seam should be weighted in proportion to the unmined reserves of each seam. In similar manner, an average for past pro¬duction should be weighed according to the past production for each seam. Figures for coal reserves are only estimates based upon geologic evidence and its interpretation. Production records are much more accurate than estimated reserves, although detailed production records for individual seams by counties are very few."

"Contact-angle and flotation techniques were used to evaluate the influence of oxygen - both that inherent in the coal and that introduced by ambient temperature, aqueous oxidation - on a wide range of coal ranks. Oxidation was found to decrease the hydrophobicity and floatability of coal; with the effect being minor for coals of high rank but becoming increasingly important as the rank of coal is reduced. As an approximation, oxidation makes a coal behave as if it were one of lower rank. Frother only flotation' of coal· correlates with the captive-bubble contact angle whereas when oil is used as a collector, the flotation appears to follow the pattern shown by the water sessile drop on a fresh, un-reagentized coal surface. Coal recovery lost through oxidation may often be recovered by use of a variety of collectors, of which No. 2 foe! oil is among the best of those reagents tested. A simple alkali-extraction test may be used to estimate the influence of oxidation on coal preparation processes and use.INTRODUCTIONThe hydrophobicity of coal is not only a function of its rank but also of the extent of oxidation of the coal during and subsequent to its formation. Weathering and oxidation processes may proceed in-situ for coal deposits that outcrop near the earth's surface, or the oxidation of the coal particles may occur during mining, stockpiling or processing. Such oxidation, whether it affects the bulk-coal sample or on1y a thin outer layer on the coal surface, can dramatically influence the wettability of the particle and hence such processes as flotation, filtration, flocculation and dispersion.Many of the studies made on the oxidation of coals ·were designed to study its effect on flotation, coking or pyrolysis. The. present study 'is directed exclusively toward the effect of oxidation on the hydrophobicity and floatability of the coal. One of the first studies of the effect of oxidation on coal flotation was that of Sun [l] who found that as oxidation proceeds, coal becomes progressively more hydrophilic. Low-temperature oxidation (100-150°C for 250 h) generally lowered the coal floatability with an oily collector only slightly, but more extensive oxidation (200- 3500 C for 250 h) reduced coal floatability seriously. Sun also found that cationic amines were effective collectors for the oxidized coal which infers that oxidation makes the coal more negative in solution. He attributed the loss of floatability to be due to the accumulation of water-insoluble oxidation products at the coal surface. Gayle et al. [2] found that oxidation adversely affected coal flotation when an aliphatic-alcohol frother was used, though a small amount of oxidation appeared to improve the floatability of some coals using a kerosene-pine oil, collector-frother mixture in pilot-plant testing. Prolonged oxidation adversely affected the flotation recovery of the coals tested, the effect being more pronounced when an alcoholic-type frother only was used. They also noted that the reduction in floatability of lower rank bituminous coals was more affected by oxidation than was that of higher rank bituminous coals."

To say that the treatment and handling of the "fines" is the most difficult phase of coal preparation is probably an understatement of facts. It is the fine sizes from about 1/16-inch to 0 that are mainly responsible for the inescapable sludge and slurry problems at plants using wet methods of preparation. Sludge and slurry are a problem from the standpoints of both cleaning and dewatering. They cannot be cleaned satisfactorily by "gravity" methods, which are used so extensively on coarser Sizes, due to the fact that fine sizes, particularly from 65-mesh to 0, do not follow the same laws of settling as do the coarser sizes. Although fine sizes are cleaned more successfully on wet-wash tables than in jigs, even tables as usually operated in coal-preparation plants fail on sizes below 100-mesh. As to other phases of the, sludge and slurry problem, wet coal preparation plants are almost universally beset with troubles in connection with the recovery and dewatering of the fine sizes from about 14-or 20-mesh to 0. The sizes finer than 100-mesh further complicate the problems in a wet preparation plant by their tendency to stay in suspension and build up a troublesome load of solids in the circulating water. In order to prevent too much trouble from this source, it is, customary at most plants to bleed a fair-sized stream out of the circulating system continuously and replace it by addition of fresh make-up water. The slurry water withdrawn from the circuit is usually run to waste, in which case it carries with it a considerable amount of fine coal, thus increasing the "washer loss." Another evil results from wasted slurry water in that quite often it finds its way into creeks and larger streams, creating stream-pollution problems.
