Bureau of Mines research to develop an in situ retorting recovery method for oil shale has involved field testing of fracturing techniques for creating fluid-flow paths in impermeable oil shale. Electrolinking, hydraulic fracturing without and with sand propping, and explosive fracturing with a liquid explosive were tested in a 25-ft-square, five-spot pattern. These wells were drilled into oil shale at 50-to 88-ft depths near Rock Springs, Wyo. Results of the fracturing tests were evaluated by injecting air into a test well and measuring flow rates and flow profiles in adjacent test wells before and after each test. To identify points of air entry (location of fractures) in wells, flow profiles were determined by use of inflatable packers and by continuous logging with an airflow probe developed during the fracturing program. Electrolinking and hydraulic fracturing without sand propping were relatively ineffective; hydraulic fracturing with sand propping created horizontal fractures with desirable flow capacity; and fracture flow capacity was significantly increased by detonation of nitro-glycerin displaced in the natural and hydraulically induced fracture systems.

The Bureau of Mines has designed and put into operation a fail-safe control system for use in underground coal mines equipped with methane drainage pipelines. This control system can detect certain unsafe conditions and respond by automatically shutting off the flow of methane from the degasification borehole to the drainage pipeline. Methane flow is shut off when the methane content in the return airways reaches a predetermined level (typically 1.5 pct), when the methane drainage pipeline is ruptured by roof fall, or when there is an electric power failure. The fail-safe control system was designed using commercially available components and a methane analyzer system previously developed by the Bureau. The fail-safe system consists of a unit that combines a shutoff valve and pneumatic valve actuator, and electronic and mechanical equipment designed to detect hazards and effect shutdown. The fail-safe control system was designed to meet regulatory requirements issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, and State regulatory bodies for the safe operation of underground methane pipelines used for mine degasification. MSHA has inspected and tested this system and permitted its use in two mines. The Bureau installed the fail-safe system in two working coal mines, where successful performance has been demonstrated.

7253. Arkhangelsky, A. D. Geological Results of the General Magnetometric and Gravimetric Surveys of the U.S.S.R. (in Russian). Internat. Geol. Cong., Rep. of the 17th Sess., Moscow-Leningrad, 1937, vol. 1, Moscow, 1939, pp. 241-250. Geophysical methods have been used in the U.S.S.R. to study geological problems. Such is the case of the general magnetometric and gravimetric surveys made jointly by the Main Physical Observatory, Main Office of Geodesy and Cartography, Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, and Main Office of Geophysical Prospecting. Some institutions supplied the data, others processed them. Geological interpretation was made by the author. (1) Regional magnetic anomalies in the plains of the U.S.S.R. are traceable to the folded substratum overlain by sedimentary rocks; these anomalies promise to yield data characterizing the substratum in respect to strike and depth. Anomalies in European U.S.S.R. suggest that the pre-Cambrian -substratum of the East European plateau consists of elements of different ages. In the most ancient of them, the main strike of the folding is almost latitudinal; in the younger ones, the folding is oriented in the meridian. (2) The Faye and Bouguer gravity anomalies are caused primarily by differences in the density of rocks composing the upper crust and by unknown processes producing changes of density at depth; these processes are not connected with isosiatic movements. The anomalies in the European and adjoining Asiatic U.S.S.R. promise to indicate the volume of the pre-Cambrian massif of the east-European plateau and to clarify the interrelations between the Ural, Tian-Shan, and Donetz Basin folding systems, as well as between the Dnieper-Donetz depression and the mid-European depression. - V. While the neurological and vascular aspects of Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) has been generally accepted as a medical condition, the medical criteria and the clinical findings used to establish the diagnosis has been more difficult to bring to consensus. The criteria was first quantified by the Taylor-Palmear scale.1 This criteria was subsequently modified in 1986 at the 1st Stockholm Workshop2,3 to included more acceptance for the neurological effects that characterized the predominate findings in some workers. The relationship between hand-arm vibration and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome was defined in NIOSH 97-1414. While the aforementioned documents have defined the clinical entities associated with hand-arm vibration exposure, agreement on the clinical findings and test to confirm the diagnosis has be been more difficult to bring to consensus. Clinicians assessing HAVS has relied on a number of varied neurological and vascular tests. The neurological testing has focused on assessing damage to the sensory capability of the fingers for the neurological component including tests to measuring ability to sense vibration, cold or other end point finger sensor functions. However, the vascular testing has been traditionally focused on the ability to either measure vascular function or to reproduce the vascular blanching that occurs in HAVS with cold water provocation. Recent assessment of this testing in the United Kingdom Coal Miner’s study has questioned the value of this testing especially in reviews by McGeoch.5 In an attempt to provide some type of definitive testing to substantiate vascular damage from hand-arm vibration exposure, angiography is an alternative or adjunct to cold water provocation testing. The standards that have been established to predict the level, type and incidence of HAVS have been based on clinical studies and reports that have essentially been all male populations. However, the recent entry of women into more vibration intensive jobs has brought about the exposure of some women to high levels of vibration previously only previously experienced by men. However, there have been only few studies that look at HAVS in women6. Although exposed the same vibration levels, it has not been clear that the latency and type of pathology of HAVS in women will be the same as for men. The purpose of this study is to look at recent case studies of men and women exposed to jobs with high levels of hand-arm vibration with extensive clinical testing for both the neurological and vascular components of HAVS as well as other associated upper extremity conditions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

To perform comprehensive economic evaluations on both existing and proposed mineral operations. Approach A comprehensive computer model was developed which is capable of evaluating the economics of an entire mineral recovery operation, including exploration, acquisition, infrastructure, mining, milling, smelting, refining, transportation, taxation, and return of and on capital. How it Works The MINSIM (MINe SIMulator) economic evaluation concept was developed by the Bureau of Mines in 1967. The initial versions used a continuous discounted cash flow rate-of-return (DCFROR) to measure the effect of changes in expected revenues and costs. Subsequent enhancements to the program have expanded and strengthened MINSIM, especially the addition of an option which determines total production cost (i.e., the commodity selling price that a mineral recovery operation would require in order to obtain a target rate of return), an expanded capacity for evaluating by-products from a mineral property, and significantly broadened taxation determining capabilities. The MINSIM computer program uses essentially the same procedures and calculations that are performed in a manual economic evaluation, although the program accomplishes its tasks much more rapidly and accurately, An experienced mineral economist may require a week to evaluate a single mining operation with the same detail and consistency provided by MINSIM in a matter of seconds of computer time.

Electrochemical machining sludge, a troublesome fluid waste product, was dewatered on a bench-scale basis by three alternative methods tested by the Federal Bureau of Mines. These methods would enable recycling 89 percent or more of the liquid content of the sludge and allow the dewatered solids to be dumped as landfill or processed further to recover contained nickel. Dewatering by vacuum precoat filtration was estimated to be the least expensive. Based on treating 20,000 gallons per day of sludge, precoat filtration costs were estimated as totaling 1.96 cents per gallon of sludge. Two options of an alternative method, comprised of acidification, reprecipitation, thickening, and filtration, were estimated to cost either 3.41 or 3.60 cents per gallon of sludge.

In the majority of metal and nonmetal mining operations, narrow vein deposits are being mined with slusher hoists. Thin; method of mucking is costly, due in part to its inherent labor intense operation and to its inability to muck 100 pct of the deposits. Mechanized equipment would greatly improve the material handling in narrow vein mining and would dramatically reduce the operational cost. The Compact Loader/Trammer, known as the "mini-mucker" has been developed to increase productivity of the load/haul/dump portion of the typical narrow vein mining cycle. This is Volume II of the final report and concerns the operation and maintenance of the mini-mucker. Volume I covers a general and design review of the activities on the subject contract and are available under separate cover.

Mine operators often rely on mine rescue teams to save lives during an underground emergency such as an underground fire, explosion or roof fall. It is extremely important that team members are provided with adequate exploration equipment and that training simulations are conducted in a realistic manner. A series of mine rescue training exercises was developed, conducted and evaluated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Deep Mine Safety. The exercises were conducted at NIOSH’s Lake Lynn Laboratory during 1995 to 1998 and resulted in improved technology and training for mine rescue teams. For example, existing technologies were identified to help rescue teams during exploration. These included chemical light sticks to identify team members and mark crosscuts and mine materials, strobe lights for mapping out escape ways, and a helmet mounted thermal imaging system to see through smoke. A hands-free communication system showed potential for enhanced communications between team members and the fresh air base. A new high-visibility team lifeline that allows for flexibility of movement between team members was developed. A positive-pressure inflatable escape device (IED) was used to isolate the “hazardous” environment from fresh air and allow rescue team members to traverse through. An inflatable feed-tube partition that can rapidly block large openings such as underground passageways and simultaneously provide a feed-tube for high-expansion foam generators was also deployed for several simulations. During the simulations, mine rescue team members donned self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA) and traversed more than 305-m of mine passageways filled with nontoxic smoke. Visibility ranged from 0.3 to 0.9-m. In one area of the mine, a kerosene heater was used to simulate a fire and reduce the oxygen concentration. In another area, a 1.5 pct methane zone was established. The team members searched for "victims,” mapped the passageways, built temporary stoppings and ventilated the smoke-filled entries. The teams indicated that the simulations were challenging and very informative.

The investigation of organic compounds in respiratory coal dust by high-resolution mass spectrometry has shown that the organic components differ (1) with particle size, (2) with rank of coal, (3) in coals of same rank from different coal seams, and (4) in respirable mine dust and respirable coal dust (prepared) from the same mine. The eight respirable mine dusts studied are from coal seams in the Appalachian region where the incidence of coal workers' pnumoconiosis is relatively high. The molecular weights of the major organic components vary greatly among these respirable mine dusts; three show strong concentrations of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons.

Bureau of Mines routine crude-oil analyses of 42 samples from 37 fields in the major producing areas in Mexico are presented in this report. Table 1 includes information on the source and general characteristics of each sample. Table 2 gives a summary of analytical and computed data. DEVELOPMENT of the electron microscope has permitted man to examine many small objects that could not be resolved by the light micro-scope. Diffraction, spherical aberration, and chromatic aberration are the main factors that limit resolution to about two-tenths micron with the light microscope. No matter how perfectly a light microscope is constructed and operated, it cannot possibly resolve points separated by less than two-tenths micron. Rapid development following World War II has produced many electron microscopes capable of 20 A resolution. Fibrous inorganic minerals are well suited for electron microscopic study. Many micrographs of chrysotile have been published, but electron microscopic study of the amphiboles has been somewhat neglected. New techniques in sample preparation have simplified the study of fibrous material. Ultrasonic energy has been very helpful in sample dispersion. This publication contains a representative group of electron micrographs of natural inorganic fibers that have industrial value. These fibers commonly are referred to as the asbestiform minerals. The Bureau hopes that the knowledge gained through electron microscopy and other scientific study of the natural inorganic crystalline fibers eventually will lead to the production of synthetic fibers that will satisfy the requirements of industry.

This report assesses the economic, legal, institutional and technical factors that affect the current and future status of implementation of mine monitoring systems in the United States. It begins with a description of a poll of the Mining Production Research Committee and the Mine Monitoring and Communications Committee of Bituminous Coal Research that was conducted to establish industry monitoring needs and constraints. Existing systems in the United States and foreign countries are then reviewed and compared with the requirements set forth by the industry committees. At the same time, state and federal mining laws are reviewed, and equipment currently available from suppliers of mine monitoring systems and components is discussed. A framework for cost/benefit analysis is established and a series of case examples for various monitoring functions are presented. The total values of the market for mine monitoring systems in 1980 and 1990 are estimated on the basis of industry statistics and system cost estimates.

Exothermic oxidation reactions of sulfide minerals can produce self-heating situations in underground mines. If the self-heating is unchecked and the resulting heat is not sufficiently dissipated, the result can be spontaneous combustion fires. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes laboratory tests conducted to measure the reactivity of pyrite following treatment with additives to counter its self-heating tendencies. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and isothermal oxidation procedures were used to obtain information on pyrite ignition and the behavior of pyrite during low-temperature oxidation to ferrous sulfate. The determination of treatment effectiveness was evaluated by adding 5 wt pct of the compound to the pyrite before milling. The resulting samples were then heated in moistened air and after 24 h, the amount of pyrite oxidation determined. Results of these tests indicated that several phosphate compounds reduced the oxidation of pyrite to sulfate to about 50 pct or less compared with the oxidation of untreated sample at 200° C. Cupric sulfate reduced oxidation to about 20 pet untreated sample at 200° C. Sodium, calcium, and potassium chloride reduced pyrite oxidation to levels of approximately 15 pct or less of the untreated sample. Using only 1 pct of sodium or calcium chloride was effective in slowing pyrite oxidation to less than 20 pct of the untreated sample.

Occupational exposures to whole-body vibration (WBV) at different frequency domains may differentially affect human comfort and the musculoskeletal system. Under this presumption, a frequency-based weighting scheme has been adapted in many widely accepted standards for WBV measurement. However, there is very little human data showing a direct link between WBV frequency and musculoskeletal disorders. We conducted an epidemiologic study to examine the association between WBV frequency and prevalence of low back pain (LBP) and to identify determinants of specific frequencies associated with LBP in urban taxi drivers. Methods The WBV frequency data were collected from 247 professional drivers (aged 44.6±8.3) who participated in an exposure validation study 1 of the Taxi Drivers’ Health Study (TDHS) in 2000. 2 In accordance with the ISO 2631-1 (1997) methods, we measured the frequency-weighted acceleration over drivers’ seat surface, under conditions representing randomly assigned destinations. We developed a WBV record-replay system at the Liberty Mutual Research Institute (LMRI) in Hopkinton, MA, USA. This system includes two tri-axial accelerometers (PCB Piezotronics, NY, USA), one RD-130T PCM data recorder (TEAC, Tokyo, Japan), and one LMWBV meter 2.0 (LMRI, MA, USA). Only the vertical axis of seat-surface WBV frequency was used in this study. To characterize the WBV frequency curve, we manually identified the presence of any peak within each of the following frequency range: <4, 4-10, 10-20, and >20 Hz. Information about the operating vehicles and driving environment was either collected from the vehicle registration record (manufacturer, year of make, transmission, engine size, etc.) or directly measured (wheel-base length, seat inclination, etc.). Structured interviews were conducted by an occupational physician to gather information on LBP that had led to medical attention or absence from driving in past year. We used multiple logistic regression to estimate the prevalence odds ratio (OR) associated with the presence of each index peak frequency, adjusting for age, body mass index, professional seniority, daily driving hours, seat inclination, and the intensity of predicted root-mean-square WBV exposure in m/sec2. For any revealed WBV frequency that was associated with LBP, we constructed a multiple logistic regression model to identify the personal and vehicle characteristics associated with the presence of WBV peak within the indicated frequency range.

In November 1940, the Bureau of Mines started exploration of the Three Blacks manganese properties - Black Diablo. in Pershing County and Black Eagle and Black .Rook in Lander County. The purpose was to determine possible reserves of manganese in the deposits. It is reported that a small amount of manganese was mined from the Black Diablo during World. War 1. No mining except that necessary for assessment work had been done on the Black Eagle. Shipments were being made from the Black Rock deposit to a concentrator at Vain, Nev., while the Bureau&apos;s development work was progressing. The Black Diablo deposit consists of one patented claim owned by the Charleston. Hill National Manes Co. Mary L. Clough of Winnemicca, Nev., president. The deposit is about 20 miles by a gravel and dirt road southwest of Golconda, a town on U. S. Highway 40 and the Southern Pacific Railway, Pershing County, Nev. The deposit lies at an elevation of about 5,600 feet on the east flank of the north-south trending Sonoma Range. The property was leased by Messrs. Hollis Chatwin, T. E. Chatwin, and R. H. Richards of Salt Lake City and Mammoth, Utah. The lessees installed a crusher and erected an ore bin below the open cut on the deposit and mined and, shipped about 5,000 tons of about 30 to 52 percent manganese ore to the Columbia Steel Co., Provo, Utah.

The NIOSH suite of coal mine ground control software addresses nearly every aspect of coal mine ground control planning, including geologic characterization, mine layout, pillar design, and support selection. Mine planners who use the soft-ware have access to the knowledge gained during years of NIOSH research—packaged in a simple, easy-to-use format. Several of these software packages have recently been updated and improved. Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS) (Figure 1) helps select the proper roof bolt system design from the immense variety of available bolt types and patterns. It was developed from statistical analysis of extensive bolt performance and roof fall data. New features in Version 2 include— • The capability to analyze roof bolt systems that use two types of bolts; and • A roof support cost module that estimates the total in-stalled cost of different patterns, considering the costs of consumables, labor, maintenance, and other factors. The Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP) (Figure 2) can be used to make judgments regarding which secondary support system will be the most effective in a particular mine condition and to evaluate the advantages or dis-advantages of alternative support systems. Version 3.0 includes additional improvements: • Supports with large load-shedding following yielding can be designed based on the peak loading capability as well as the residual loading capability; • Seven new support systems have been added to the program; and • Easier access to photo gallery has been provided. The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) replaces com-plicated geologic information with a simple numerical rating that mine planners can use in many ground control applications. The CMRR can be readily integrated into a geologic exploration program, and the software package is capable of generating an AutoCAD CMRR "layer." Version 1.2 contains— • The complete CMRR database with more than 250 ratings obtained from 70 different U.S. coal seams; and • An all-new "Help" file that clearly explains all aspects of the program. Analysis of Horizontal Stress in Mining (AHSM) can help find the optimum mine layouts for control of horizontal stress. It can be used to analyze both development and longwall retreat designs, and it shows how the stress condition varies as the entry, crosscut, and panel orientations are changed. Version 2 features— • Improved graphics that enable the user to observe the effect of design changes without adjusting the display on the computer screen; and • Resource files containing information on stress map-ping, advance-and-relieve mining, stress measurements in U.S. coal mines, and other topics. This report presents a method of utilizing the Coulomb strength criteria for estimating the strength and stability of pillars and pit slopes containing planes of weakness. It is assumed that the Coulomb theory, as a special case of the Mohr envelope, is a satisfactory first approximation of failure in uniaxial compression or triaxial loading with low lateral loads. Accepting this assumption for brittle materials, an expression for the strength decrease of rock pillars containing a plane of weakness or fracture at any angle of orientation is derived. As few as six samples (three solid cores and three fractured cores at a failure-oriented angle) are required for testing uniaxially and triaxially to statistically determine the coefficients of friction and the shear strengths of both the solid rock and the fracture plane and the range of failure angles of the fracture plane. Interpretation of the data shows that the mean normal stress and maximum shear stress technique of analyzing the data is superior for solid core and that shear and normal stress values using angles of failure should be used for fractured specimens with failure-oriented angles. Plots of either the strength or strength ratios against fracture angles obtained from oriented drill core samples give a useful first approximation of strength decrease due to fracture. Using the same test conditions for both fractured and unfractured material increases the validity of the tests.

A list of permissible mine equipment approved by the Bureau of Mines before January 1, 1940, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circu- lar 71103. Information Circular 71584, published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved during the calendar year 1940. The present list contains the information given in those two circulars, as well as approvals issued during the calendar year 1941. It embraces electrically operated air compressors, coal drills, conveyors and loading machines, electrical equipment for mine fans, mining machines and trucks, mine pumps, rock- dust distributors, room hoists, storage-battery gathering and haulage locomotives, storage-battery power trucks and shuttle cars, mine telephones, junction and distribution boxes, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, electric flood lamps, flashlights, methane detectors, and single- and multiple-shot blasting units. The equipment listed is not approved by the Bureau of Mines until found by inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in "schedules" prepared upon the basis of many years of ex- perience in dealing with safety problems confronting the coal-mining in- dustry. The use of such equipment in mines that are known to be gassy,. as well as in those that may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. This circular is published so that the industry may be kept informed as to the many types of machines, devices, and lamps that are available for reducing explosion and other hazards incidental to coal mining.

As part of the work done at the Washington coal mines during the year 1929 , a study was made of the safety practices in and about the mines . Inasmuch as electrical blasting has made considerable headway it is interesting to note the manner in which it is done and the reasons why it was discarded at some of the mines . Blasting is done at the mines in the State by means of capped fuse , electric blasting " caps , " and in some instances by electric delay detonators . Black blasting powder with fuse is used at most of the open- light mines . The use of squibs was discontinued several years ago because the coal operators , without exception , recognized the dangers incidental to their use . Permissible explosive and dynamite are also used at some of the open- light mines . With the exception of some rock work and the driving of level work in gangways and air courses the explosive is detonated by means of capped fuse .

Phase I of these studies demonstrated the feasibility of measuring the efficiency and capacity of sorbents in tube-type samplers for contaminant gases. This was accomplished by measuring concentration at various points along the length of the diffusion path during sampling. Concentrations were measured by removing small aliquots with gas-tight syringes and gas chromatography. With hexane as the gas and activated charcoal as the sorbent the procedure was quite successful and we proceeded with Phase II of the study; this involved application of the principle to gases of importance in diesel exhaust using a variety of sorbents. When we worked with high concentrations of the test gas we clearly demonstrated the differences in both efficiency and capacity of the sorbents for each of several gases. The chief drawbacks of the system were that we were unsuccessful in determining more toxic gases at realistic occupational exposure levels or determining formaldehyde at any level using the flame ionization detector. It was concluded that, although the method is feasible, more sensitive methods of measuring concentrations of gas in the tube must be developed to make the procedure applicable to regions of chief industrial hygiene interest.
