The Bureau of Mines conducted re-search to determine the resistance of basic refractories to corrosion by ash slags that would result from the burning of coal and lignite in metallurgical operations. Basic refractories are of economic interest because they are from one-third to one-half as expensive as 90-to 99-pct-alumina refractories. Static tests were performed at 1,300° C and dynamic tests at 1,400° to 1,650° C to investigate the stability of refractory specimens in a slag environment. In alkali-containing lignite ash slags, in order of decreasing resistance, magnesite, magnesite-chrome, and chrome-magnesite refractories all had corrosion resistances equal to or better than 90-to 99-pct-alumina refractories. These basic refractories formed slag penetration layers in dynamic tests, which helped protect them from further attack. Chemically bonded basic refractories in general did not have as good a resistance to slag attack as did burned refractories of the same composition. In very acidic coal ash slag, a chrome-magnesite refractory containing 30 pct MgO plus a slag inhibitor and direct-bonded magnesite-chrome refractories with 60 pct MgO had good resistance to attack. Chrome-magnesite refractories (30 to 40 pct MgO) were moderately to severely attacked, and refractories with greater than 70 pct MgO were severely attacked by this same slag.

Oil yields, lithology, and stratigraphy have been evaluated for 15 cored wells and two sampled wells representing 10 square miles of the Tipton Member of the Green River Formation near Green River, Wyo. The area evaluated is being used by the Bureau of Mines for experimental production of oil from the oil shales in place. Lithology and oil yields were correlated to produce a stratigraphy diagram for the in situ study area, permitting precise designation of comparable sections. Because of lateral uniformity of oil shale, oil yields from eight cores and two sets of drill-cutting samples within a quarter section show the range of variation in average oil yield arising from experimental error. Variation in average oil yields from the seven cores representing the 10-square-mile study area lies within the expected experimental error. No difference in oil-shale richness across the study area is indicated. Average oil yields for three Tipton sections in the study area were deter-mined as follows: (1) The entire Tipton Member oil shale (about 145 feet thick), 13.3 gallons per ton; (2) the 40-foot upper rich zone, 21.0 gallons per ton; and (3) the 21-foot zone in which the Laramie Energy Research Center is conducting in situ experiments, 22.4 gallons per ton. One acre of the 21-foot experimental section represents 34,300 barrels of oil in place, and 1 acre of the Tipton's 40-foot rich upper layer represents 62,000 barrels.

"A new record in fuel efficiency at petroleum refineries was achieved in 1935, when an average of only 615,000 B. t. u. was needed to refine a barrel of crude oil, compared with an average of 638,000 B. t. u. in 1934 and 829,000 B. t. u. In 1925. (See fig. 1.)Refiners have made almost uninterrupted progress in firing efficiency during the last decade although much of this gain was brought about by improved technique and greater use of heat exchangers and pipe stills, the determining factor was the trend in crude runs to stills. Most plants can increase their crude throughput materially with but small increase in fuel consumption. Consequently, in years in which crude runs have increased substantially, average requirements have declined; but in years in which crude runs have decreased, the average has tended upward. This conclusion is confirmed by figure 1, which shows that there has been but one minor exception to this rule in the last 10 years.Technical progress in fuel efficiency may be illustrated by comparing crude runs and total B. t, u. consumed. Between 1925 and 1935 crude runs to stills increased 31 percent, but the total quantity of heat required did not increase; in fact, it declined slightly.The trend of modern still construction is from shell stills, in which a large body of oil is heated, to tube stills, in which the heat comes into much closer contact with the oil. In 1935 the total capacity of operating pipe stills increased about 4 percent; this increase, though small, probably was related to the gain in average efficiency.The Increased use of heat exchangers and their role as fuel savers have been discussed in previous reports of this series. It is sufficient to say that refiners with insufficient exchange capacity added as much in 1935 as their budgets would permit."

In addition to developing various types of coal-interface detection system, the US Bureau of Miner is actively in involved in developing a coal rib-thickness monitoring system for highwall mining applications. One particular system that shows promise in a ground-pentetrating radar system to detect the coal-air boundaries of coal rifts. Based on preliminary laboratory and field tests results indicate that this method can be applied successfully in highwall mines to maintain constant rib thickness. The coal seam should be relatively clean in the vicinity of the antenna (e.g., have minimal partings or dirt bands) for best results.

This report presents the results of a task to complete a final design of a remote controlled hi-roof bolting machine for high roof areas in coal mines. The project was begun by visiting several coal mines to become familiar with roof fall areas. Several machine concepts were generated and presented to the design committee for criticism. A preliminary design was completed, as covered by this report. A Final Design and Final Report will be issued incorporating the committee comments at the Preliminary Design review and comments received concerning this Preliminary Design Report.

Inhaled particle contact with pulmonary surfactant in the hypophase lining pulmonary alveoli was modeled in vitro by exposing two respirable sized dusts, kaolin and silica quartz, to lecithin, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, emulsified in physiologic saline. Lecithin adsorbs to the dusts upon incubation at 37º C and suppresses their cytotoxicity as measured by pulmonary macrophage and erythrocyte assays, suggesting that pulmonary surfactant provides a defense system against prompt cell membrane lysis by inhaled dusts. Subsequent pulmonary macrophage phagocytosis and lysosomal enzyme digestion of the coated dusts was modeled in vitro by incubation with phospholipase A2 for one hour. With increasing lipase activity, silica hemolytic potential was restored to native silica levels. Kaolin was retoxified to levels far in excess of native kaolin hemolytic potential. Elution, thin layer chromatography and phosphate assay of treated dusts indicate most lecithin on silica is digested to lysolecithin and desorbed, silica retoxification being due to surface and adherent lysolecithin effects. Most lecithin on kaolin is not digested in this same time; that which is results in adherent lysolecithin which is responsible for the kaolin retoxification. Digestion with phospholipases A2 and C together produces only weakly retoxified kaolin. Results suggest that surface adsorption properties which control the adherence of prophylactic surfactant distinguish the pathogenic potentials of quartz, kaolin and mixed dust.

Emphasis is placed on assessing the hazard potential, on ventilation principles, and on monitoring for gas. The chapter also emphasizes the importance of human factors in reducing explosion risk. Ensuring safe conditions is much more than just good engineering design. It also involves the every-day vigilance of those working underground. This does not imply that the engineering design can be ignored, only that the job of providing safe conditions has just begun with design. EARLY INDICATORS OF A GAS PROBLEM For the engineer planning a tunnel project, reliable early indicators of methane are scarce. How-ever, the local geology can often provide some information.2 Carbonaceous rocks and tar sands are a likely methane source. Gas is also a distinct possibility if it is known to be present else-where in the same sequence of geologic formations. Swampy areas, sewerage systems, and landfills are also candidates because the decomposition of organic materials produces methane. The gas in a tunnel can originate in the strata being excavated, or it can migrate a considerable distance from adjacent strata. Test borings at the project site can also serve as initial indicators of gas. Methane has no odor, but may be emitted along with gases that do. If gas is emitted from the borehole, a sample may be collected by inserting a tube into the hole as far as possible and pumping the gas out. The gas sample should be collected in a sampling bag or canister for later analysis by a chemical laboratory.3

In Fayette County, the Pittsburgh bed has been the major source of production for almost two centuries. Although historical documentation is not available, there is evidence, that the Pittsburgh bed may have been discovered in Fayette County near Mt. Braddock, Pa., as early as 1753. The earliest known reference to coal in western Pennsylvania was recorded in 1758 by a Quaker trader, James .Kenny, who reported having seen coal in Fayette County. The production of coke from Pittsburgh coal was begun in 1841, when two 10-foot beehive ovens were erected in the Connellsville region to make coke .for shipment by river to the market. The Connellsville, region extends from Latrobe, Pa., in Westmoreland County to South of Uniontown, in Fayette County. Connellsville coke was used with great success in the Clinton furnace in 1859.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard ISO 2631 [1,2] provides three methods for evaluation of human exposure to vibrations that contain occasional shocks or impacts. Part 1 of the standard specifies the running r.m.s. or maximum transient vibration method (MTVV) and the fourth power vibration dose value (VDV). Part 5 of the standard provides a method of computing the stress in the lumbar spine for humans exposed to multiple shocks. Alem et al [3] have reported application of these methods to data for tactical ground vehicles. This paper reports and compares VDV and spinal stress evaluations of more than 90 hours of vibration and shock measurements on North American locomotives engaged in through freight operations. The measurements evaluated in this paper were obtained for full crew shifts on 19 freight locomotive runs on mainline track in locations from New York to California. The shifts ranged in duration from 187 minutes to 497 minutes. The average speeds for the shifts were from 21.0 mph to 54.6 mph. All measurements were made on locomotives hauling freight trains in regular revenue service. Data Acquisition and Processing The results reported here were computed using test data acquired from a tri-axial seat pad, accelerometer at a sample rate of 400Hz with an anti-aliasing filter corner frequency of 100Hz. The VDVs and the lateral and longitudinal spinal stress values were computed directly from the acquired test data according to the procedures specified and described in [1] and [2]. The vertical spinal stress values were computed by converting the as-acquired test data to a sample rate of 160Hz for input to the vertical spine model, as required in [2]. The conversion of the test data from the as-acquired sample rate of 400Hz to the required sample rate of 160Hz involved up sampling or interpolating the test data to an equivalent sample rate of 800Hz, band limiting the resultant data with a low-pass filter corner frequency of 60Hz and finally down sampling or decimating the 800Hz data to a sample frequency of 160Hz. Discussion The vertical VDVs computed according to [2] for the 19 shifts ranged from 2.68 to 9.33 m/s1.75. In all but one case, the vertical values were greater than the values for the lateral or longitudinal directions. Note that the health guidance in [1] puts the lower boundary of the health guidance caution zone at a VDV value of 8.5 and the upper boundary at 17 m/s1.75. The daily equivalent static compression dose computed following [2] ranged from 0.123 to 0.434 MPa. Health guidance provided in [2] states that there is a low probability of an adverse health effect if the daily dose is less than 0.5 MPa.

[The blast-furnace operator is often confronted with the problem of determining the size of the materials which are used in the furnace burden. The statement is heard that the coke is larger or smaller or that certain ore is finer than that previously used. A screen analysis of the materials used gives a measure of the different sizes of materials in an aggregate. When one is fine and the other is coarse, the difference is obvious; but when the materials are of similar sire, it is more difficult to estimate the degree of finances or coarseness. In considering raw materials it would be desirable to be able to judge the size of the radio ideal materials entering the furnace and the burden as a whole, by one representative value, such as the average size of particle. Previous work by Perrott and Kinney3 developed a method for measuring the average size of particle in a mass of finely ground materials, and an attempt will be made to apply this method to the materials included in the blast-furnace charge and to the entire burden.]

Yttrium and rare-earth element. pegmatite dikes are associated with a peralkaline granitic and nephelene syenite complex near Dora Bay on southern Prince of Wales Island. Mineralized dikes were mapped and sampled during USBM investigations in 1987 and 1988. Coarse-grained pegmatite dikes, which emanated as late-stage magmatic fluids from the intrusion, further evolved into vein-dikes and ultimately silica-rich veins. The dikes can be traced up to two miles along a north-south zone. Lithophile elements exhibit a pronounced zonation in vein-dikes and veins that are distal to the Dora Bay complex with increasing values correlating with increasing distance from the complex. The pattern of mineralization suggests very late stage magmatic fluids containing the incompatable lithophile elements were injected into a preexisting north-south fracture zone. REE mineralogy exhibit fine-grained intergrowths of principally thalenite and bastnaesite with lessor monazite and eudialyte. Euxenite contains most of the columbium values and zircon is commonly associated with the dikes. Estimates of inferred and hypothetical resource tonnage range from 1.7 X 1C6 to 8.5 X 106 st for two deposits. Contained RED (including yttrium) averages 0.5 pct and ranges up to 2.0 pct. Deposits are of polymineralic composition and about half of this resource comprises the heavy yttrium subgroup.

The development and operation of "combination wells"5/ have created new and unusual problems, many of which can he solved only if information is available concerning the properties of the fluids produced. Data as to the characteristics of the fluids at the relatively high pressures that exist in the reservoirs are especially important, and there is growing economic concern to know what part, if any, of the liquid recovered at the surface was liquid in the reservoir, As an extension of this problem, it is important to know, whether liquid will be formed in the reservoir as a result of isothermal retrograde condensation when the reservoir pressure is reduced. The pressure range of such condensation, if it occurs, is significant in the design of gas-recycling plants for maintaining reservoir pressures. In connection with the operation of such plants, it is particularly important to know how pressure and temperature will affect the yield of the liquid phase and the composition of the gas to be returned to the reservoir. It has not been possible to predict the behavior of these fluids that have high ratios off gas to liquid by comparing them with the behavior of low gas-liquid ratio fluids at identical pressures and temperatures. Such comparison fails because the proportions in which a component will be distributed between the phases of a system at any given temperature and pressure depend increasingly on the composition of the mixture as the critical temperature and. pressure of the system are approached. Because many combination wells are producing from reservoirs that have temperatures near the critical point, experimental date on the properties of the Fluids under reservoir conditions are particularly important at this time, To meet the immediate requirements of the industry for such experimental information, an equilibrium cell has been constructed at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Bartlesville, Okla. When adequate experimental date have been accumulated, it may be possible to make dependable estimates of the phase relations for high gas-liquid ratio fluids at the pressures anti temperatures characteristic of "combination-well? reservoirs.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a systematic procedure for separation, characterization, and semiquantitative analysis of high-boiling (350° to 550° C) distillates of crude oils. Isothermal and molecular distillation were used to prepare the 370° to 530° C distillate of Recluse, Wyo., crude oil. The distillate was separated into fractions by chemical treatment, silica-alumina gel adsorption, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The fractions were analyzed by use of GPC correlations and mass and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry. The increased knowledge of petroleum composition obtained from the data will contribute to improved petroleum processing and utilization and energy conservation.

The investigations reported herein comprise preliminary studies to evaluate large scale mining systems adaptable to the thicker oil shale deposits in the deeper central portion of the Piceance Creek Basin. The studies include an evaluation of the geology, hydrology and resources of the Basin., evaluation of a potential prototype mine site, synthesis of rock mechanics data on Green River Formation oil shale, selection and preliminary design and cost evaluation of six potential mining systems and a ranking analysis to aid in selecting the most promising system. Results of the ranking analysis indicate the following four systems to be most promising for large scale underground oil shale mining: - Chamber and pillar (using spent shale backfill) - Sublevel stoping with spent shale backfill - Sublevel stoping with full subsidence - Block caving with LHD's Recommendations for phase II are to investigate the above systems in greater detail, refine present cost data, and perform economic evaluations of oil shale mining using these systems.

A field operable, breadboard model, borehole radar was developed for the detection of hazardous geological anomalies in and above a coal seam in advance of mining. A four-inch diameter downhole probe was fabricated and tested in several environments. The radar transmitter was also employed in a cross-hole or through transmission mode to determine natural geotechnical and man-made conditions between boreholes. Sensitivity to underground conditions in both modes of operation were indicated.

4. Preliminary Study - Remote Seal Checker 4.1 Introduction Determination of the completeness of each individual seal at the time of its emplacement is essential for an effective remote sealing system. A satisfactory seal checking technique should provide a signal which: (1) indicates percentage completion as the seal is emplaced (2) provides a definite indication of a complete seal (3) indicates the size of the unsealed area if a complete seal is not feasible This information is required to establish the need for additional seal material, the need for additional seals, and the risk likely involved in entering the mine., In many situations it is as important to know the quality of a seal as it is to build an effective one. It is likely that with repeated use the remote sealing technique developed by Foster-Miller Associates will be sufficiently reliable and predictable to preclude the seal checking requirement. It is recommended, however, that each seal be checked during construction to insure its completeness and increase the level of confidence so necessary in reopening the mine. 4.2 Description of General Problem Several characteristics of remote mine seals are important in considering techniques for evaluating the effectiveness of these seals. "The regrettable death of James S. Cunningham, Foreman Miner, attached to Bureau of Mines Rescue Car No. 2, while wearing a half-hour type oxygen breathing apparatus in a gasoline storage tank at Trinidad, Colorado, raised the question as to the possibility of gasoline vapors permeating the rubberized fabric of the breathing bags of such apparatus.It is known that most gases and especially certain organic vapors permeate rubber, by solution or a similar process. The rubber becomes saturated with the gas and if a concentration of gas is maintained on one side of the rubber sheet it slowly gives off gas from the other side. It of course takes some time for the gas to diffuse through the rubber and the length of time before it reaches the other side is proportional to the thickness of the rubber. The amount of gas that passes through per unit of area in unit time increases with the concentration of gas and also varies with the structure and composition of the rubber.It has been suggested that the gasoline vapor could not have penetrated into the interior of an oxygen breathing bag because the pressure is greater on the inside, but this is not true as the process of permeation by solution in the rub¬ber is affected only by the difference in the partial pressures of gasoline vapor on the inside and outside of the bag. The positive oxygen pressure on the inside can only prevent the entrance of gasoline vapor through measurable holes, and has no effect on permeation by diffusion through the rubber.A sample of gasoline was obtained from the tank in which Cunningham met his death. Examination by Dr. E. W. Dean of the Petroleum Division of the Bureau of Mines gave the following results.This shows the gasoline to be heavy and typical of the gasolines sold throughout Colorado for motor fuel A. Salvus half hour oxygen apparatus was arranged with the breathing bag only in a gas tight box in which the space was kept saturated with the vapor of this gasoline. The main part of the apparatus was outside the box. Oxygen from the apparatus was breathed by a man in the usual manner. Gas samples were taken from the box at intervals to determine the concentration of gasoline vapor, also samples of the oxygen breathed were taken from a side tube in the mouthpiece. The room temperature was 75°F. The concentration of gasoline vapor in the box at the beginning of the test was 4.3%. The man breathing from the apparatus thought he detected gasoline in his oxygen in two minutes after starting the test. Analysis of the inspired oxygen at this time showed 0.03% gasoline vapor. The same man remained on the apparatus for 18 1/2 minutes without suffering any ill effects. His place vas then taken by another man who wore the apparatus until the oxygen was exhausted without noticing more than a trace of gasoline at any time. At the end of the test the inspired oxygen contained 0.07% gasoline vapor. The total time of test was 38 minutes."

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch and pilot plant flotation tests to determine the technical feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica from a California micaceous schist. Best results in the laboratory batch tests were obtained using sodium carbonate and sodium silicate for pH control and quartz depression, and a combination of fatty acid and cationic reagents as the mica collector. In continuous pilot plant flotation tests, an alkaline fatty acid-cationic method recovered about 70 percent of the mica in a concentrate analyzing 95.6 percent mica.

"INTRODUCTION The Mining Branch of the Bureau of Mines has used the wagon drill to sample mineral deposits in New Mexico. This method of sampling was successful and con¬stituted an important phase of the work on five exploratory projects undertaken in 1943, 1944, and 1945. The deposits varied in topographic features, geology, mineral content, and in the physical characteristics of the rocks drilled. The altitudes ranged from 630 to 7,800 feet. Three hundred and seventeen holes totaling 6,852 feet were drilled. The deepest hole was 66 feet; the average depth was a little less than 22 feet.The results of the above-mentioned work form the basis of this report. Special attention is given to the later and more improved techniques used. This report was written with the expectation that the procedures might prove advantageous to others in the exploration and sampling of near-surface mineral de¬posits, and that a more extended use of the technique might result.AcknowledgmentsAcknowledgment is due Charles H.
