The Production Profile Program is written for use on a Digital Model PDP 11/70 computer using a Fortran IV level G language. It may be run on any system which uses G level or an upward compatible version of Fortran IV language. Please note, however, that the Model PDP 11/70 for which the program was written is programed to read DEC026 type keypunching. If the user's computer is programed for another type of keypunching it may be necessary to re-keypunch the Production Profile Program. The Production Profile Program uses a fourteen card input. The data must be keypunched according to the layout described in detail in the multiple card layout forms (following). The output from this program must be printed on wide paper, as a full 120 columns are used. The samples of output at the back of this appendix have been reduced for inclusion in this report.

"Attention of the Bureau of Mines was first directed to the Gray farm area by the results of several exploratory churn-drill holes completed by the New Jersey Zinc Co., and later by Roland J. Teske and by Judge H. L. Heer.When the Bureau of Mines initiated its investigation of the area, all drilling on the Gray farm had been discontinued, and no mining had resulted from the exploratory work. However, in the opinion of the Illinois Geological Survey, the Federal Geological Survey, and the Federal Bureau of Mines, this drilling,with the preliminary geological studies, was considered sufficient evidence to justify continued exploration to the southeast along a projection of the trend of mineralization developed in the mines to the northwest, or the so-called Black Jack Trough.This report describes the work done and presents the data obtained during the period of Bureau of Mines exploratory work.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its Primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. In the past several years, there have been a number of blasting-related carbon monoxide migration incidents. In each case, there have been some common factors that appear to be related to carbon monoxide migration. Geology, heavy confinement of the blast, close proximity to the affected structure, and open pathways into the affected structure are just a few. Prince William County, VA is an area undergoing a boom in suburban development. In the year 2001, more than 4,050 new homes were constructed within the county.1 In the new housing development located in Bristow,VA, trench blasting was utilized to excavate proposed sewage and utility lines. On November 8, 2002, a trench blast was conducted for the installation of utility lines. Later that evening a carbon monoxide detector alarmed in a nearby house. The gas company and fire department sampled for carbon monoxide and measured 100 ppm and more than 200 ppm on the first floor and in the basement respectively. Subsequent efforts to prevent migration of CO into the nearby homes met with mixed results. The only reliable technique for protecting neighbors from CO appears to be the placement of CO monitors in the homes. The events are presented and discussed.

Provide an accurate, reliable means for determining when a sealed mine or mine section can be safely reopened after a fire. Approach The Bureau of Mines performed a research investigation that resulted in the development of a mathematical formula for deriving a quantity, called RATIO, which can be used to define when a sealed mine or mine section has returned to safe recovery conditions after a fire. Research Results There were two major results from this Bureau research. Over a period of several years, the Bureau of Mines conducted six experiments at its Bruceton Experimental Mine in Pennsylvania. The experiments involved sealing the mine after several tons of piled coal had been allowed to burn continuously for 2 to 3 days. Although gas data obtained during the experiments revealed nothing significant, measured smoke particle levels were found to correlate with the stages of combustion and temperatures of the smoldering coal pile. Moreover, it was found that no smoke particles are produced when high-temperature smoldering exists deep within the mass of the coal pile since the smoke particles are filtered by the coal surrounding the hot region. Smoke is emitted into the mine atmosphere only if combustion is occurring near exposed surfaces. As suggested by these findings, any decision to recover a sealed mine area based primarily upon the absence of smoke particles is not a wise derision.

"The Hog Creek mine, in lot 92 of the 17th district in Towns County, Georgia, was examined in 1890 by F. P. King, who reported the existence there of a 4-foot vein of corundum. The mine is about 2 miles west of Hiawassee, on the southern side of Ramey Mountain. Ed Burch, of Hog Creek, holds the surface rights, and the mineral rights appear to be vested in the heirs of William R. McConnell, who formerly owned and prospected the property.Examination by the Bureau of Mines showed the workings to be caved, but it was thought advisable to open the mine and uncover the reported vein. The Bureau's work consisted, of trenching and cleaning out the pits and shaft.William R. McConnell, the former owner, prospected the property in about 1890. At some tine during that operation, the prospect was visited by Francis P. Kings a geologist with the Georgia Geological Survey.3/King reported that a 4-foot vein of corundum was exposed g feet below the surface in the main cut and was opened for 20 feet along the strike. He also reported that the so-called ""Georgia rubies"" were taken from this mine.The main mine is about 2,000 feet- north of Hoc Creek on a timbered southern slope of Ramey Mountain. It lies at an altitude of about 2,100 feet, approximately 100 feet above the high-water level of the Catuga reservoir, which floods Hog Creek to a quarter of a mile above its confluence with the Hiawassee River. The nearest water is a small branch about 1,000 feet to the west.Chlorite schist is the principal host rock. It has been intruded by irregular masses of a very herd periodtite rock possibly troctolite. The schist near the surface is extremely weathered, presenting white and red laminations parallel to the schistosity. At a depth of 40 feet in the cross-cut it appears as a fine-grained green-chlorite schist. The schist strikes about N. 350 E. and dips 800 to the southeast.No corundum vein was found, and if any existed it must have been mined out after King's visit. In the pit, about 15 feet west of the shaft, approximately 150 pounds of zoisite and an occasiona1 small crystal of corundum were found imbedded in schist about 18 feet below the surface, near hard, dense troctolite."

Develop a curved ray geotomographic program with constraints to counteract non-uniqueness in order to improve the reliability of seismic tomographic imaging of geological structure in mining regions. Background Seismic tomography provides a two-dimensional image (tomographic reconstruction) of the distribution of the seismic velocity in geologic structures using measured travel times of seismic waves crossing the area. It can provide a more complete representation of features be¬tween boreholes than other crosshole processing methods that measure only average properties or borehole logging methods that measure properties only near each borehole. Seismic tomography has many mining applications. They include locating geologic structures of contrasting seismic velocity, detecting fractured regions where the seismic velocity is low, and monitoring solution injected above the water table where the increase in saturation increases the seismic velocity. Thus, tomographic imaging techniques show great promise for detecting and locating geologic hazards that affect the productivity, safety, and environment of mining operations.

To provide a method for locating trapped miners promptly and accurately. The Approach: Develop a wireless emergency system that is intrinsically safe, compact, easy to operate, reliable, sturdy, and economical. How It Works: A (one transmitter has been developed under Bureau of Mines contracts. The transmitter weighs only a few ounces, is powered by a cap lamp battery, arid can be carried on the miner's belt. A compact loop antenna, which could either be carried by the miner or strategically located in the mine, is used to generate a magnetic field that is sensed by a mobile receiver on the surface. When needed, the antenna is deployed to form a single loop. In mines where the overburden is less than 600 feet, a loop of No. 19 wire approximately 30 feet in circumference is normally adequate. This antenna weighs less than one half pound. In deeper mines, a heavier wire and bigger loop is required; a No. 10 wire deployed around a pillar has been used.

It is estimated that 6,202,235,000 gallons .of- gasoline was produced during the year 1922. The crude light oil- output Burin- the same year is estimated at 111,000,000 gallons, or 1.8 per cent of the gasoline production. In fact, if all the coal mined were coked in by-product ovens, and the light oil recovered therefrom, this product would amount to only 15 to 20 per cent of the quantity of the petroleum gasoline now produced annually. It is obvious therefore, from these figures that the light oils by present coking processes can not assume great importance as a gasoline substitute in a national sense. However, the use of light oil as a motor fuel is of real importance in districts adjacent to by-product coking operations from which a reasonable proportion of the local motor fuel supply may be derived. The certainty of diminution of petroleum resources in the relatively near future demands the utmost utilization of gasoline substitutes from the distillation of coal as well as other sources. Motor benzol is a by-product from the destructive distillation of coal. From 11/2 to 3 gallons of refined motor benzol is obtained per ton of coal carbonized. The light oil vapors are extracted from the by-product coke-oven gas by passing it upward through a series of towers in which these vapors are absorbed in a descending current of "wash" oil (petroleum distillate). The light, oil is recovered from this wash oil by distillation with live steam, the resulting crude light oil consisting of a mixture of benzol, toluol, xylol, solvent naphtha, and a small amount of other substances (unsaturated hydro-carbons, carbon disulphide, and other sulphur compounds, phenols and pyridines) is then transferred to an intermittent still and fractionated into crude motor benzol, which includes the toluol and a part of the xylol or light solvent naphtha. The crude, motor benzol is yellow in color, contains sulphur compounds which corrode copper and brass, and also contains unsaturated bodies which oxidize and polymerize on standing, producing sediment and forming gummy deposits highly objectionable when the benzol is used in motors. As deeper seams are continually mined, methane liberation will continue to increase and must be monitored effectively. To effectively monitor and develop appropriate control technology, methane-liberation patterns must be known. The Bureau of Mines recently completed a study to identify specific patterns of face methane liberation during long- wall mining. Both of the longwall faces surveyed had high methane liberation rates. At one longwall face, most of the methane was liberated during cutting of coal by the shearer mining machine. At the second face, a significant portion of methane was emitted from the face and floor. An effective methane-monitoring system would be different for each longwall panel because of the differences in how the gas is released along the face.

Development of such processes by the Bureau of Mines was authorized by Public Law 290, 78th Congress. This bibliography included references to and abstracts of publications appearing from. 1930 to September 1948 on all processes in general use in the petroleum refining and chemical industries. "The average heat requirement per barrel of crude refined in the United States rose from 579,000 B. t. u. in 1940 to 584,000 B. t. u. in 1941. This marked the second successive year in which there was an apparent loss in fuel efficiency at refineries. This ""loss"" took place despite an increase in crude runs, which used to be an invariable indicator of a lower average.Probably the chief factor in the increased heat requirement in 1941 was the gain in the over-all gasoline yield from 43.1 percent in 1940 to 44.2 percent in 1941. Possibly another important factor was the further use of obsolete equipment to increase throughput.The refiners used more of all kinds of fuel excapt coke in 1941 than in 1940. However, the only fuels which increased materially in relative importance were refinery gas, which contributed 51.6 percent of the total heat units in 1941 compared with 50.7 percent in 1940, and natural gas, the share of which rose from 17.1 percent in 1940 to 18.0 percent in 1941. The changes in the percentages for the other fuels were as follows: Oil decreased from 25.7 to 24.1 percent; acid sludge fell from 2.7 to 2.5; coal remained at 3.4 percent; and coke (including steam) fell from 0.5 to 0.4 percent.New records for fuel efficiency were set in all three of the districts east of the Mississippi, namely, East Coast, Appalachian, and Indiana, Illi¬nois, etc. All the ether districts reported higher average fuel requirements in 1941, except the Louisiana Gulf and Arkansas-Louisiana inland.Since the year of the first statistics, the refiners have steadily increased their purchases of electricity. In 1941 total purchases were 1,862,996,000 kilowatt-hours, or 11 percent more than in 1940."

"One phase of the Bureau of Mines' work in the field of health and safety is the promotion of the use of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respiratory protective devices. To promote the development of such devices the Bureau has established schedules of minimum requirements for oxygen breathing apparatus3/ gas masks/, supplied-air respirators5/ (hose masks, airline respirators, and abrasive blasting helmets, hoods, or masks), and mechanical-filter respirators6/.Manufacturers of respiratory protective devices may submit their equipment to the Bureau for approval under the requirements of these schedules.As a prerequisite to such submittal, the Bureau requires a statement that the device is completely developed and of the design and material the manufacturer believes suitable for a finished marketable device; that the device has been subjected to inspections and tests such as described in the schedules, and that it met those requirements when tested by the manufacturer or his testing agency; and a. statement regarding the nature, adequacy, and continuity of control of the quality of the respirator. If the manufacturer can satisfy these requirements, and if the device, when tested by the Bureau, meets its requirements, a certificate of approval is granted by the Bureau of Mines. The approved devices bear distinguishing marks that indicate that they have been approved, the purpose for which they are approved, and the limitations of their use. If it is found at any time that approved devices purchased in the oven market and tested do not meet the requirements of the schedule, the Bureau may rescind that approval. Lists7/ of approved devices are published periodically for the convenient information of the public.Respiratory equipment may be divided into two main groups: (1). Those that afford protection by removing atmospheric contaminants and (2) those by which a respirable atmosphere from an uncontaminated source is supplied to the wearer.The devices that protect by the removal of contaminants may be divided into two subgroups: (1) Those that protect against gaseous contaminants and (2) those that protect against particulate matter. There may, of course, be combinations of these two.The devices by which a respirable atmosphere is furnished to the wearer also may be divided into two subgroups: (1) The self-contained type, by which the supply of oxygen, or material from which the oxygen can be generated is carried by the wearer, and (2) the hose type, by which air is supplied to the wearer through a hose or tube."

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH conducted research to determine the safe operating conditions for using recycled (used) lubricating oil from mining equipment as a partial replacement for diesel fuel to make ANFO-type blasting agents. The use of recycled oil (RO) conserves energy, reduces oil imports, and reduces mining costs. Since RO has a variable composition, there was concern that the additives/impurities it contains may cause ANFO made with RO to be unstable (as compared to regular ANFO) at high summer ambient storage temperatures. Reactivity of RO with zinc was also a concern. Thermal stability tests were conducted to help quantify and resolve these issues. ANFO mixtures (0.66 lb/300 g) were put into sample containers made of steel, stainless steel, and galvanized (zinc coated) steel pipe fittings, which were heated in isothermal ovens. The experimental parameters were temperature settings of 140° F (60° C) and 176° F (80° C), four sample container (pipe fitting) metal combinations, and nominal heating periods of one and three days. The ANFO samples contained 6% each of the following twelve different oils/oil mixtures: No. 1 was diesel fuel, Nos. 2 thru 6 were five candidate oils (2 thru 5 were used oils and 6 was a new synthetic oil), No. 7 was 5% diesel fuel + 1 % graphite, and Nos. 8 thru 12 were 3% diesel fuel + 3% each of the five candidate oils. All samples showed no reactivity when heated at 140° F (60°C). All samples (except No. 7) reacted at 176° F (80° C) in a steel pipe with galvanized caps as follows: No. I reacted most, Nos. 8-12 reacted moderately, and Nos. 2-6 reacted least. All ANFO samples were tested and found not to be cap sensitive.

An automatic steering control system was designed, installed and tested on a coal mine shuttle car. The system utilizes sensors and associated signal processing electronics developed under a previous phase of this contract. The automatic steering system performs the routine guidance functions of turning corners and straight-through tramming. The shuttle car driver retains full authority of speed, braking, load and unload functions and at any time may exercise his option with manual override or steering. Steering information is generated from signals derived from the existing Lateral Guidance sensor subsystem, and all operational features of the previously developed open-loop system are retained. Above ground system tests were conducted in a simulated mine constructed of wood panel ribs. Results were in good agreement with prior hybrid computer simulations undertaken to validate the basic control system over a broad range of conditions and to select system parameter values. The automatic steering system was successfully demonstrated in the above ground simulated mine to USBM technical representatives. Designed to meet USBM permissibility requirements, the system is ready for a Phase II underground testing program. Testing in actual underground mine environment is expected to provide additional data regarding recommended performance improvements and implementation techniques.

"The Jewell tunnel property, situated 3/miles north of Garfield, Chaffee County, Colo., was examined by an engineer3 of the Bureau of Mines in June 1943. Field work began September 16, 1944, but was recessed from December 26, 1944, to gay 15, 1945, because of heavy snows, and was suspended July 12, 1945, when rehabilitation of the New York tunnel workings was completed to the point desired.In its program of exploration of Mineral deposits, the Bureau of Lines has as its promary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. In connection with a program of coal research at the Southern Experiment Station the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the various coal operators, conducts washability studies of coal from beds in Alabama and other Southern States in which commercially important deposits occur. One of the main objectives of a washability study is to obtain technically and commercially important data necessary for determining the best methods for preparing and utilizing the Nation's limited reserves of coking coal. Such information is important to conservation because it facilitates selection of preparation methods that will provide maximum yields of coal with low ash and sulfur contents.

This is one of a. series of papers being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines, describing raining and milling methods at crushed-stone plants throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in man; instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. However, operating costs are essential to technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that the scope of the cost tabulations shall not be misunderstood. This paper deals with the quarrying and crushing methods used at the Avon Mountain trap-rock quarry of the Atlas Sand, Gravel & Stone Co., in West Hartford, Conn.

Longwall operators are again pushing the envelope in terms of life expectancy for longwall shields. State-of-the-art shields are now expected to last more than 60,000 loading cycles, twice the life expectancy compared with those of a decade ago. A review of trends in shield design shows that shields continue to increase in both size and capacity. Some state-of-the-art shields now weigh over 30 tons and provide up to 1,200 tons of support capacity. Although life expectancy has increased and modern shields are structurally more reliable, premature failures do still occur. This paper provides an engineering and operational assessment of shield design and provides key points to observe in what causes premature shield failures. Design practices to improve structural margins of safety that will prevent premature failures from occurring are also examined. A survey of recent shield failures is provided, as well as trends in shield design and how they might impact the performance and longevity of a shield. Hydraulic failures are more common than structural failures. Although hydraulic failures occur on all aging longwall shields, they often go undetected for long periods, resulting in degraded support capacity that can lead to serious ground control problems. The fundamentals of shield hydraulics are described in order to evaluate hydraulic failures that plague all shields at some point in their service life, and practical methods to detect hydraulic failures are examined. The paper concludes with recommendations for inspecting damaged shields and safety precautions regarding their continued use.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes an investigation of the amount of respirable dust adhering to the surfaces of seven run-of-face broken bituminous coals. The number of respirable-size (0.9 to 10 micrometers) particles adhering to the run-of-face coal ranged from 1011 to 1012 particles per pound of coal and was approximately inversely proportional to the mean lump size of the coal sample, otherwise it did not vary significantly with the coal seam, mining method, or winning machine. Based on these results, about 16 lb of ordinary run-of-face broken coal would have enough respirable-size adhering dust to contaminate 1,000,000 ft3 of air up to the 2 mg/m3 level, if this adhering dust should become airborne. Although brief studies here suggest that a negligible amount of new respirable dust is formed due to fracture of the broken coal during dropping, dislodging of old adhering particles during secondary handling operations is a potentially dangerous source of airborne respirable dust.
