Therefore, knowledge of the composition of dusts is important in evaluating the hazard entailed on exposure. At present, free silica, of which quartz is the most abundant form, is considered one of the most significant dusts, from the standpoint of pneumoconiosis, and one State5/ has established permissible limits of air dustiness on the basis of the free-silica content of rock. The amount of free silica in materials used for rock dusting also has been limited.6/ Determination of free silica or quartz, therefore, is important.

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1982 was $299.4 million, a decrease of $14.4 million from that of 1981; the decrease continued a downward trend that started in 1980. Output of most nonfuel minerals declined; cement, crushed stone, lime, sand and gravel, and clays were the major commodities produced in the State. Despite the decrease in mineral output, Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble; was second in bauxite; third in ferroalloys and oyster shell; fourth in bentonite and dimension marble; fifth in common clay. fire clay, and kaolin; and sixth in masonry cement and lime.

The Bureau of Mines has determined the electrochemical rate of anodic dissolution of vanadium metal in a VC12-VC13-NaC1 electrolyte at 860' C for the purpose of elucidating the reaction mechanism. Rate measurements were carried out with the help of specially designed equipment capable of continuously recording the weight loss experienced by a cylindrical vanadium anode immersed in the molten salt electrolyte while a constant current is maintained through it. The rate is expressed as a function of current density and VC13 concentration, and the reaction is interpreted in terms of an adsorption mechanism. Multiple regression analysis of the data gave the following rate equation: Rate x 104 (g.cm-2.sec-1) = -0.38 + 2.64 current density (amp-cm-2) + 0.69 log, (mole-percent VC13).

GLOSSARY Acid- and toxic-forming materials. Rock or coal layers containing significant amounts of pyrite or other minerals which, if exposed by coal mining, will cause acid or toxic drainage to occur when acted upon by air and water. Add mine drainage. Any water with a pH less s than 6.0 draining from a coal mine. Water is often orange-colored because of the presence of oxidized iron. Adit. An underground mine entry at sites where coal seams are exposed at ground level. Apple core. A complete hilltop (360°) left exposed by not backfilling the highwall. Approximate original contour. The surface configuration achieved by backfilling and grading the mined area so that be reclaimed land closely resembles the general pre-mining surface configuration and blends into and complements the drainage pattern of the surrounding terrain. Area mining. A surface mining method that is carried on in level to gently rolling topography on relatively large tracts of land. Active area mine pits may be several miles long. Arid and semiarid regions. Lands, generally west t of We 100% meridian, where water use by native vegetation equals or exceeds that supplied by natural precipitation, and rainfall is insufficient to support agriculture. Annual precipitation is normally 20 inches or less. Auger mining. A mining technique often used by surface mine operators when the overburden becomes too for the coal to be mined economically using traditional surface mining methods. Large-diameter (usually 2'-4') horizontal holes are drilled as much as 300 feet into We vertical Me of the coal bed by an auger. Like a bit used for boring holes in wood, coal augers consist of a cutting head with a screw-like extension. The operation of refilling an excavation using material removed during the mining process. Bench. The level or flat working area at the base of the highwall that is excavated between the exposed coal seam and the original surface of the ground. Bucket wheel excavator. A continuous-digging machine that uses a rotating vertical wheel with buckets for large-scale stripping and excavating. Cessation Order. Order to cease mining issued to a coal operator by the regulatory authority due to severity of violations, Contemporaneous reclamation. Restoration of mined land that occurs as soon as practical after coal removal. Contour mining. A mining method commonly used in eastern mountainous topography where coal is removed in a narrow strip around the hillside. The extent of the cut into the hillside is determined by the depth of overburden at the highwall compared with the thickness of the coal seam. Daylighting. A term used to describe a surface mining procedure that exposes abandoned underground coal mine workings to enable removal of the remaining coal. Daylighting is followed by land reclamation. Dragline. An excavating machine, usually used in large, flat areas, that drags a bucket (which holds up to 220 cubic yards of material) toward the machine by cables, loads it with spoil, and then hoists it wit a boom up to 350 feet long, allowing the machine to excavate wide benches by depositing the spoil hundreds of feet away from the highwall. Grading. The process of smoothing the disturbed areas of the mine site, after the coal is removed, to closely approximate the pre¬mining terrain. Haul road. Any road constructed, improved, maintained, or used by mine operators and located within the permit area. Head-of-hollow fill. See "valley rill." Highwall. The cliff-like excavated face of exposed overburden and coal in a surface mine. Hydroseeding. Planting of seed mixed in a water medium. Water, mulch, lime, fertilizer, and seed are blended and sprayed onto regarded soil.

This report is the fifth in a series concerning the Bureau of Mines program for microfilming maps of abandoned mines in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. A catalog of the microfilmed maps of 47 of 49 major mines and 18 independent mines in the Southern field is presented. Previous reports included catalogs of microfilmed maps of mines in the Eastern Middle field, the Wyoming and Lackawanna Basins of the Northern field, and the Western Middle anthracite field.

A high efficiency ejector has been developed which solves the abrasion problem associated with remote pneumatic stowing. The system can also produce cemented fills. The ejector is capable of moving the fill material over 70 ft from the injection point and filling the mine opening to the roof level for a distance of about 30 ft in all directions from the borehole. This system operates by the transfer of momentum from a supersonic air stream to the fill material. The momentum transfer results in a horizontal stream of fill material and air at a velocity of about 100 fps. The ejector fits on the bottom end of a 3 in diameter vertical pipe. Fill material is fed into the ejector at a controlled rate through a hopper mounted over the borehole. High pressure air used to operate the ejector is fed through a second 3 in diameter pipe. This system has the additional feature of mixing water in the air stream which increases the potential momentum of the air stream. Where necessary, cement can be added to the gravel to create a cemented fill. The design parameters and test results for four versions of the ejector are presented in this report.

The Bureau of Mines improved removal of selenium from zinc smelter acidic gas scrubber effluent by using zinc dust to precipitate soluble selenium prior to lime neutralization. Lime neutralization alone decreased selenium in the waste water from, typically, 6 parts per million to 2 parts per million, whereas the use of zinc dust precipitant gave an effluent containing less than 0.1 part per million of selenium. The waste treatment operation first was developed on a laboratory scale and later was successfully tested at a smelter site on a 1-gallon-per-minute basis. During the research a simple and rapid means was developed for determining selenium in waste water; the technique enabled visual semiquantitative selenium determinations that later were confirmed quantitatively by X-ray fluorescence.

Pilot plant studies showed the technical feasibility of fluidized-bed operation for producing hydrogen and synthesis gas by the steam-iron process. A mixture of iron and iron oxide from 20-to 100-mesh was partially reduced with a simulated producer gas and then oxidized with steam and/or carbon dioxide. Results of tests show the effects of pressure, temperature, bed height, gas-to-solids ratio, type of iron oxide, and composition of gas on the gas and solids conversions during reduction and oxidation. A baffled free-fall solids system was also found operable. The short residence time of about 5 seconds limited conversion of the solids.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Arkansas has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251 of which this is the tenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of which deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated. and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

The design productive capacity of natural-gasoline and cycling plants in the United States on January 1, 1960, was 54.6 million gallons per day, according to the Bureau of Mines biennial survey. This represents an increase of 5.8 million gallons per day during the 2-year period since the last survey. The major increases occurred in Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas. In Utah, natural gasoline capacity was reported for the first tine at 320 thousand gallons per day as of January 1, 1960. The total number of plants increased from 584 on January 1, 1958, to 596 on January 1, 1960. However, the operating plants decreased from 558 to 555 in the same period.

The British Solomon Islands Protectorate continued developmental work on bauxite deposits on the Islands of Rennell and Vaghena. A feasibility study was completed by Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd., and Pacific Aluminum Ltd. (a subsidiary of Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Ltd,), and negotiations with the Government were in progress. The Government will receive a 25% share if the project is realized. It was estimated that the Islands contain 60 million tons of bauxite with an alumina content of 45% to 50%.

"More than 73 million pounds of rock dust were used by the bituminous-coal-mining companies in the United States during 1930 to present or limit loss of life and destruction of property from explosions of gas and coal dust in underground mining operations, according to statistics compiled by the United States Bureau of Mines from reports furnished by mine operators. The mines using rock dust produced 65. 691, 753 tons of coal during the year, more than 30 percent of the total production of bituminous coal from underground mines in the United States that year. Although only 382 out of a total of 5,629 active underground bituminous mines applied rock dust to underground working as a precaution against explosions, they were chiefly the larger producing mines, employing 25.4 percent of all of the underground bitumious mine workers in the United States and accounting for 27.4 percent of the total number of man-hours worked underground at bituminous mines.a summary of the reports for the 382 mines using rock dust showed a total production of 96,691,755 tons of bituminous coal, 89,503 men employed underground, and 129,718,965 man-hours worked by the underground employees. (See tables 1 and 2.) These mines averaged 8.76 pounds of rock dust per ton of coal shown by reports from 385 mines using rock dust in 1932 (See table 3.)"

In 1992, as part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines Idaho Land Assessment Program, the Western Field Operations Center investigated the mineral resources of the 30,300-hectare Elk Summit study area. The area is in the Clearwater National Forest, adjoining the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness in Idaho County. Idaho. The study area is underlain by granitic and metasedimentary rocks. Associated with these rocks are road metal (stone) resources, black sand mineral placer resources, and thermal water resources. Also present are abundant sand and gravel. Two of the five sites examined during the Bureau study have road metal (stone) resources, one has black sand mineral resources, one has thermal water resources. The fifth site is a black sand mineral placer occurrence. There is no evidence of petroleum or coal resources. Idaho County records indicate that 38 mining claims, mostly black-sand placer, have been located in the study area, Twenty-three of the claims are current. Workings consist of a few pits and trenches at the placer, and two borrow pits. The only mineral commodity produced from the area was about 1,500 tonnes of stone excavated from the Savage Pass and Swamp Creek borrow pits along the Elk Summit road, north of Hoodoo Lake. The stone was used to surface the road; these stone resources will continue to be used as needed.

APPENDIX B - DEVELOPMENT OF FOAM-CONCRETE SLURRY MINE SEALANT 1. Introduction This appendix describes the results of an experimental development and laboratory evaluation of foam-concrete as a rapid setting, lightweight, self-supporting mine sealant material. Foam concrete, otherwise known as Aerated Concrete, is a form of lightweight concrete whose structure consists of air bubbles held together by a hardened cement mortar. Its principal applications are found in roofing, insulation, shock absorbing, and backfill. The air bubbles in foam concrete are formed either by chemical reaction in the wet, placed mortar, or by introducing a stable foam into the mortar during mixing. The mortar is usually a cement slurry with fine sand or fly ash as filler. Our attention focused on preformed foam concrete, since this is most adaptable to field applications. Equipment is available,* which simultaneously mixes and pumps a slurry of foam concrete. Such a slurry can be produced at a rate of up to 50 yards/hr and has been pumped in a 2-inch-diameter hose 1000-feet horizontally and 250 feet vertically up without significant bubble deterioration. Equilibrium partial pressures of gaseous HCl and H2O over aqueous binary and ternary solutions of HCl and AICls were calculated or estimated in the range of 20° to 110° C, and up to saturation with AlC13?6H2O. The results were extended to solutions containing less than 10 wt-pct FeCl3 by assuming that FeCl3 and AIC13 are equivalent on the molar basis, since both salts have trivalent cations with a cammon anion. The ionic activity coefficient of HCl and the equilibrium constant for dissolution of gaseous HCl were also computed. This research is part of the effort by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, to provide thermodynamic data to expand the technology base relevant to the extraction of alumina from nonbauxitic domestic raw materials.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents a study of three typical tailings samples as potential cemented backfill in underground mines. The testing series was unique in that the pulp densities of the samples were all above 75 pct solids. Test results included dry density; slump; percent settling after 28 days of curing; tensile strength after 28, 120, and 180 days of curing; and unconfined compressive strengths after 7, 28, 120, and 180 days of curing. The physical properties of the various test mixtures were further analyzed using linear and nonlinear statistical methods to produce correlations and mathematical equations. Physical properties were used to determine the influence of mix additives and as input for numerical modeling studies of backfill. The mathematical relations were used as a predictive tool in determining the suitability of various materials as backfill.
