This chapter focuses on smoke as it relates to escape from underground mine fires. Among the topics discussed are the measurement of visibility in smoke; smoke-related hazards such as the production of CO, hydrochloric acid (HCI), or other byproducts of combustion; and miners' personal experiences while escaping through smoke. Smoke Measurement and Visibility In general, smoke consists of hundreds of thousands of very small particles. These particles have some "size," usually expressed in terms of their diameters, and they have some concentrations, usually expressed either in the number of these particles per unit volume or the total mass of the particles per unit volume. Humans cannot see individual smoke particles because they are too small. Similarly, "umber concentrations" and "mass concentrations" of smoke particles do not have much meaning to people unless they are trained technically. Still, individuals know that they can see smoke, independent of all the technical jargon used to describe it. Also, they know that when the smoke level gets too high, it is no longer visible. In fact, nothing is visible because the smoke absorbs all of the light in its surroundings. The eye is only sensitive to light in the wavelength region from about 400 nm to about 700 nm. The maximum sensitivity of the human eye is to light that has a wavelength of about 555 nm. It is important to know how the eye responds to light because if its response is known, it is possible to use a light detector that has almost the same response as the eye. Such a detector can then be used to quantify the visible characteristics of smoke because it responds in the same manner as the human eye. Smoke is visible because it either scatters or attenuates (diminishes) light. In some instances, smoke is visible because the smoke particles reflect light which is then detected by the eye. The eye actually "sees" an intensity of light that has been reflected from a cloud of smoke particles. Imagine shining a flashlight into a cloud of smoke. Someone off to the side can actually "see" the beam of light as it traverses the smoke cloud. This is called scattering. Smoke is also visible be¬cause it attenuates light. Imagine having someone shine a flashlight into your eyes. As smoke begins to build up along the beam of the flashlight, the light begins to dim. The smoke is visible because it is now reducing the intensity of light that falls upon the eye. As the smoke level increases, it is said to obscure our visibility. When the beam is no longer visible, the smoke obscuration is said to be 100%. In other words, none of the light energy from the flashlight makes its way through the cloud of smoke. Another way of saying that the obscuration is 100% is to say that the transmission of light through the cloud is zero.

Reaching movements are planned and subsequently executed [1] using visual and somatosensory feedbacks [2], where absence of visual feedback is known to increase endpoint variability [3]. Visual occlusion decreases the ability to make rapid online compensatory movements, which results in initial radial deviations that are highly correlated with radial dispersion at the target. Perturbations of rapid, visually-guided reaches are compensated on-line and result in endpoint dispersions poorly correlated with initial deviations, emphasizing the strong effect of visual feedback in temporally-constrained reaching tasks. In control conditions (no vibration), these uncompensated, rapid reaches serve as estimates of the individual’s intended trajectory. When ride motion is present, trajectories of rapid, visually-occluded reaches provide a measure of the natural biodynamic response of the cantilevered spine-arm-hand linkage. These intended movement trajectories and the biodynamic response (vibration feedthrough) are used to predict the effect of ride motion on the performance of rapid reaching tasks. Goals of this study are to investigate the influences of vehicle motion on human reaching and pointing, and to reveal movement strategies used in visually-occluded reaching tasks. Methods A six degree of freedom human-rated Ride Motion Simulator (RMS) was used to generate a dynamic vehicle environment. Participants performed discrete, rapid pointing tasks to targets presented on three touchpanel displays under stationary and random whole-body vibration. Reach instructions included successfully reaching identical circular targets (Ø = 0.25”) with the right index fingertip as fast as possible. Targets were presented on resistive-touch displays mounted approximately 60 cm from the participant’s nasion. The touchpanel displays were located in the forward and lateral directions at eye level, and forward at 45° of elevation. These displays measured the spatial error of the reach destination. A ten-camera VICON motion capture system recorded the upper body kinematics of the participant. Reflective markers were placed on the participant’s torso, head, and arms. Initial kinematics of the fingertip (i.e. time and magnitude peak tangential velocity) and tangential velocity at target were used to estimate the planned endpoint of the reach. Results and Discussion Ride motion resulted in increased endpoint variability compared to reaches performed in the stationary condition. Reaches to the elevated touchpanel consistently resulted in the largest variability across all motion conditions, suggesting that a vehicle occupant would not be capable of accurately activating a control in that location. Principal axes of endpoint ellipses were along and perpendicular to the direction of fingertip movements. The estimated recoverable reserves in the area in the vicinity of Eska 2 mine are, 699,300 tons in the Chapin and Emery bas of the Maitland group. Those recoverable reserves are in the area between the Eska fault zone and Jonesville fault and extend down dip from the outcrops. No reserves were developed by the Eska 2 entry or by drill hole 14-16 in the Eska fault zone. The small quantity of reserves in the vicinity of the Eska 2 mine is insufficient to justify development of a now, modern .nine in this area. The estimated recoverable reserves in the area east of aka Creek are 974,500 tons in the Eska, Shaw, and Martin beds of the Eska group. Most of those reserves occur in the south limb of the syncline. It will be necessary to practice subjacent mining methods to recover these reserves in the Eska group. The Eska bed developed by the diamond drilling in this area comprises coal end few thin partings. The Shaw and Martin beds comprise two bunches of coal separated by partings, and the product from full-bed mining will require thorough preparation.

Any communication system requires at least three elements in order to function: a transmitting device, a receiving device, and a transmission line or propagation medium. Even the device children use, tin cans connected with string, consists or these three elements. One speaks into one can (transmitter), which vibrates at the same frequencies as the voice. The string (transmission path) picks up the vibrations of the can and carries them along its entire length. The other can (receiver) detects the vibration and reproduces the original sounds to a lesser extent depending on distance, tightness of string, type of string, etc. All communication systems depend on these three elements: transmitter, transmission path, and receiver. Communication systems can be divided into three fundamental categories: wired phone systems, radio systems, and carrier current systems. Sections 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4, respectively, describe these systems and explain the basic principles of how each works. Hybrid systems are those systems that use various combinations of the three basic communication methods. Hybrid systems are described in section 2.5. There are some other methods of signaling (stench warning, bell signaling, etc.) that can be used in underground mines to transmit or convey information. These systems, although they cannot be considered true communication systems since they do not provide voice or even two-way communication, are briefly described in section 2.6. 2.2 Wired Phone Systems Wired phone systems are all those that depend on a wire connection between phones with the wire carrying the voice signals. Figure 2-1 is a diagram of two typical wired phone systems.The top panel shows a simple single pair party line system. In this system each phone is connected to a common pair of wires, and a person speaking into one phone will be heard at all the other phones on the line. The bottom panel shows a multipair private line phone system. In this type of system, each phone is connected by its own individual pair of wires to a central switch or telephone exchange. To establish a call between two phones in this system, the lines between the two phones must be connected (switched together) within the telephone exchange. In early exchanges, the connections were made manually by an operator. These exchanges are called Private Branch Exchanges (PBX's). Today, equipment within the exchange can automatically connect each phone to any other phone in the system. These exchanges are called Private Automatic Branch Exchanges (PABX's). There are many different types of automatic exchanges. Some utilize switches to physically make each connection according to the number dialed. Other, more advanced exchanges are completely solid state and may even be computer controlled. [ ]

Preparation of high-purity magnesium-yttrium alloys by electroreduction of Y2O3 dissolved in a YF3-LiF bath and the subsequent deposition of yttrium in a molten magnesium cathode was investigated in laboratory-scale apparatus. Parameters such as temperature, current density, and electrolyte density were studied. Electrolysis was conducted in a specially designed MgO diaphragm cell at temperatures ranging from 780° to 970° C. Alloys containing up to 55 weight-percent yttrium were prepared at cathode current efficiencies of 21 to 60 percent. Cell design and operation are described, and some of the limiting conditions pertaining to the method are discussed.

Permit visual inspection of underground cavities dam the surface. Approach A closed circuit TV camera and a 35mm still camera are lowered down a borehole, and remotely operated. How It Works A platform holding the cameras, and other equipment is lowered on a graduated cable until the depth of interest is reached. Then a quartz lamp and the TV camera are turned on. The television picture is monitored at the surface and recorded on video tape. Areas of special interest are photographed with a 35mm still camera. These photographs contain more detail than TV images because photographic film is capable of higher resolution than a TV transmission.

Develop methods of enhancing and measuring the high-temperature softening and melting properties of iron oxide pellets reduced under simulated blast furnace smelting conditions. Approach Add dolomite and Limestone flux and a low-cost organic binder, such as starch, carboxyl methylcellose (CMC), or waste papermill sludge, to the iron oxide concentrate to produce hematite (ferric oxide) pellets with superior high-temperature metallurgical properties. Simultaneous increases in softening temperature, gas permeability, and enhanced metallization rates are sought to improve blast furnace productivity and energy efficiency. Background In the past, bentonite, an inorganic binder, was the only additive (binder) used in the production of pellets made from iron ore concentrate. Research has shown that the reducibility of conventional (acid) pellets can be increased by the addition of flux or an organic binder. The increase in pellet reducibility results in less wustite in the center of the pellet at high temperatures, such as those obtained in the cohesive zone of the blast furnace.

The supply of arsenic trioxide in 1982 was adequate to meet domestic demand. Allocation of supply by major domestic and foreign producers that began in 1977 ended during the first quarter of 1982. The Bureau of Mines conducted tests on seven samples of Florida phosphate operations.slimes to develop a method to recover phosphate presently being discarded because of its small grain size. A system of hydrocyclones and hydroseparators was used to recover up to 96 pct of the plus 400-mesh material from the slimes. This plus 400-mesh material was subjected to fatty acid flotation, and concentrates containing up to 33.4 pct P205 were produced. As much as 88 pct of the phosphate (P205) was recovered from the plus 400-mesh material, and up to 29.6 pct was recovered from the total slimes.

The Bureau of Mines conducted drilling experiments in the laboratory with a commercially available percussive drill that has an independent rotational system. Eight rock types with a wide range of physical properties were drilled under several combinations of rotational speed, drilling thrust, and operating pressure. Penetration rates and energy per unit volume correlated well with the coefficient of rock strength as shown graphically. Size-distribution analyses of some of the drill cuttings show how particle size varies with rotation speed and rock hardness. In general, changing the rotational speed has a greater influence on the penetration rate in softer rocks, with penetration rate increasing with increasing rotational speed.

"The occurrence of Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP) ·has been potentially linked with several characteristics of coal such as rank, volatility, percent content of ash and non-coal components, quartz content, and the presence of several trace elements. According to the National Research Council, numerous epidemiological Studies: indicate that the incidence of CWP varies significantly with the composition and/or the concentration of the coal mine dust.Although advances in dust suppression techniques have markedly reduced respirable dust levels in underground coal mines, the National Research Council has concluded that chemical characteristics of respirable dust from different coal seams should be studied. With this objective in mind, research has been conducted in underground coal mines located in the eastern and mid-western United States, and in the laboratory to characterize the elemental composition of mining-generated airborne dust and laboratory-generated dust derived from samples taken from these mines. The goal of the research is to determine if a relationship exists between mining-generated and laboratory-generated dust from the ·same mine. Results of this research will be presented. ,"

Provide the technology to remotely control a thin¬-seam continuous mining machine from a safe location hundreds of feet outby the working face in an underground room-and-pillar mine. Background and Approach Hard-wired or radio remote control of continuous mining machine has been commercially available since the early 1970's. This type of remote control, in low and high coal seams, situates the machine operator offboard, but within direct view of the underground coal face, Although positioned under supported roof, the operator can still be exposed to face area hazards that include roof-rib falls, dust, methane explosions, and equipment congestion. The U.S. Bureau of Mines approach has been to put the operator into a protected compartment at a location away from the working face. Since 1979, the Bureau has investigated innovative methods to better protect face area workers in under¬ground room-and-pillar mines. In 1989, the Bureau demonstrated an offboard, computer-based remote con¬trol system in a West Virginia highwall mining operation that stationed the operator hundreds of feet away from the working face. In late 1992, much of this technology, plus improvements, Was used to demonstrate, on the surface, how a thin-scam continuous mining machine could be remotely controlled 200 feet from the machine in a 36-inch working height.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments to determine if the primary gas toxicities evolved during the early (-300° C) and later (>400° C) combustion stages of mine conveyor belts could be predicted by a smoke particle characteristic. The experiments were conducted in an approximately 20-L furnace at set furnace temperatures of 150°, 250°, and 1,000° C, with a furnace airflow of 10 L/min. The variables studied, as a function of time, included hydrogen chloride and carbon monoxide concentrations, the average smoke particle diameter (d8 and number concentration (no), and the product of the average smoke particle diameter and concentration (dgn0) Other variables included the sample and furnace temperatures and the sample mass weight loss. Results show that the inverse of the smoke particle diameter-concentration product (ldgn0), correlates directly with the hydrogen chloride and carbon monoxide toxicities released in large quantities during the early and later stages of combustion.

A series of geological surveys were completed in six coal mines in connection with a Bureau of Mines research program on methane control. The aim of these surveys was twofold: First, to study the overall geology of the coalbed, and second to use the resulting data to evaluate the influence of the geological characteristics of the coalbed on safe and efficient coal extraction. This report explains the advantages of geologic maps and fence diagrams in coal mining, and how the knowledge gained from such geologic investigations of mines can help control many underground problems.

This paper deals with the third phase of on extensive research on coal-mine ventilation factors. A comprehensive report of the entire work is in course of preparation, but abstracts of the various chapters are being prepared in order to make the results public as rapidly as possible. Parts I and II of this paper were issued Serial 2621 and Serial 2647 of the Bureau of Mines in July and October, 1924. They dealt with the resistance of unobstructed entry and the resistance caused by mine cars in untimbered entry. Description of the Tests After the resistance of unobstructed entry and of mine cars in untimbered entry had been determined by tests in the Experimental Mine, three different types of timbering were installed in the test section and the increased resistance caused by the timbering was determined.

An evaluation of diamond-bit performance data accumulated from core drilling in quartzite shows that core recovery and physical characteristics of drill bits and diamonds have economic significance. Relatively inexpensive, low-quality, small Congo diamonds will perform as well as, or better than, other diamonds used as drill bart. M-type bits set with oriented Congo diamonds provide those engaged in core drilling with near optimum combination. Various factors that affect bit performance, including size of diamonds, size and type of bits, grade or quality of diamonds, and percentage of core recovered, are evaluated by means of tables, charts, and discussion.

This report describes an inclined-piston pressure gage that operates from a zero-pressure datum level. The gage is adaptable to accurate vapor-pressure measurements in the low and intermediate pressure range, 0.01 to 40 mm (mercury). Residual friction in the oil-lubricated piston-cylinder combination is eliminated by a unique oscillatory method that is free of end thrust on the piston and allows the full sensitivity of the gage to be realized. The axial component of the weight-to-area ratio of the piston is determined by measuring the angle of inclination with a goniometer that can be read to 1 sec. Accuracy of the gage proper is estimated to range from 0.001 to 0.012 mm from lower to upper pressure limits. Its highest practical sensitivity is about 0.0005 mm. As a test, the vapor pressures of ice and water were measured in the range -30° to +20° C.
