Interesting data on electric blasting and sinking of the Montreal No. 5 shaft of the Montreal Mining Co., Montreal, Wis., were obtained during the sinking of the last 877 feet of this shaft. Several unusual features and safety practices are also to be found in the Montreal mine. The Montreal shaft was sunk 2,156 feet from August 16, 1921, to May 1, 1924, and 877 feet from October, 1927, to June, 1928. The first section of the shaft was supported with steel sets spaced 5 feet on centers; and instead of lagging the walls were covered with three-eighths of an inch of gunite where Greenstone was encountered, and where quartz-slate was found (from the surface to the 12th level) the walls were lagged with tamarack lath treated with carbolineum, a preservative.

The coal and metal mines of the United States furnish this country with a large part of the fuel and material necessary to support our industries and thus make possible the welfare and prosperity of our people and even the continuance of our present-day scale of civilization. Mining companies furnish material to industry with one general purpose in mind -- the making of a profit on their work. Efforts are being made successfully and continually to reduce operating costs, to increase production per man, and to perform work as far as possible mechanically and with more efficiency. These efforts are made primarily to reduce costs, to increase production, or to do both - in other words to make more profits or more certain profits. In the endeavor to reduce expense companies are considering more and more the factors which enter into costs of production, among them the factor of accidents and their cost. This paper endeavors to estimate the approximate cost of accidents to the mining industry in order to present the saving possible through accident reduction or elimination.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of a general investigation of mines and mineral deposits in the Upper Mississippi lead and zinc field, attention of the Bureau of Mines was first directed to the Coker mines area by the presence of large tonnages of old mill tailings containing economically recoverable percentages of lead and zinc. Later, the results of extensive geologic studies of the area were presented to the Bureau of Mines by the Federal Geological Survey, directing attention to the possibility of extending the known ore limits of the area to the north and northeast of the old Coker No. 1 mine workings.With this end in view, the Bureau of Mines undertook a program of churn drilling and sampling. This report describes the work done and presents the data obtained during the period of the Bureau of Mines investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The mining law of Chosen, which was made effective April 1, 1916, was promulgated as ordinance 8, December 24, 1915, in accordance with the provisions of articles 1 and 2 of law No. 30 of 1911. The new le repealed the mining law, Fo. 3 of 1906, and the placer mining law, No. of 1906, and in effect annulled all prior mining legislation. An amendment to the mining law of 1916 (by virtue of law No. 30 of 1911) vas. passed December 16, 1918, as ordinence o. 17. The detailed regulations, which were to supplement the law proper, and rich in all probability follow closely the regulations in force in the Empire, were not available. Unless otherwise indicated, references in this paper are to the mining law of 1916.

In 1990, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 12.321 acre Black Warrior study area, one of several proposed additions to the Sawtooth Wilderness. No identified mineral resources were delineated. There were 123 lode and placer claims in or adjacent to the study area. There is a known hot spring adjacent to the study area, but presently no geothermal leases are pending. Lode mines in pr adjacent to the Black Warrior study area have produced 4,022 tons of ore from which 1,981 oz of gold and 811 oz of silver were recovered. None of the vines are currently active. During the field study 125 rock samples were taken. Significant gold assays and favorable geologic characteristics at seven properties indicate that gold occurrences and resources with byproduct metals may exist in the study area. Two other sites yielded anomalous gold assays; however, sage favorable geologic characteristics are lacking. Presently, identified gold resources are being delineated by drilling programs in the nearby Atlanta and Rocky Bar mining districts. These districts have geologic characteristics similar to the Black Warrior area. During the field study 22 placer samples were taken. In most places where an anomalous concentration of gold was found, the stream channels are too narrow for operations other than recreational suction dredges. However. One area is estimated to contain over 2 million yd3 of gold-bearing gravels.

This report describes Bureau of Mines research to develop methods to evaluate loading on longwall roof supports to permit better design and more efficient utilization of these structures in compliance with the geological conditions in which they are employed. The resultant vertical and horizontal force acting on the canopy of a shield can be determined, either from a statically determinate solution assuming rigid-body mechanics and elimination of certain unknowns, or from an elastic solu-tion by analysis of the load-displacement relationship of the shield structure. A two-dimensional rigid-body model is presented that determines resultant shield forces by measurement of leg, canopy capsule, and lemniscate link forces. An elastic solution is presented, in the form of an elastic stiffness model with two degrees of freedom, which describes the load-displacement relationship from the stiffness of the shield structure as determined in the Bureau's Mine Roof Simulator (MRS). The ability of both models to determine resultant forces acting on the shield canopy are evaluated from full-scale tests in the MRS. More advanced numerical models are also discussed as part of the Bureau's continuing effort in the evaluation of roof support structures.

This supplement has been prepared to furnish information on amendments to the regulations that were approved by acting secretary of the Interior on June 24, 1946, while this report was in the press. Page 14, item 2, and page 20, item 4, have been amended by the addition of the following footnote: "Pending the development of a satisfactory multiple-shot permissible blasting unit, a blasting unit of Type II, Class A, covered by Federal Specification WB 411, December 31, 1941 (with or without Amendment 2, June 16, 1945), may be used until Decem- ber 31, 1947. Should a satisfactory multiple-shot permissible unit be made available prior to that date, this interim approval may be terminated." Page 14, footnote / has been amended to read as follows: "The use of charges over 1-1/2 pounds and not exceeding 3 pounds is approved pending further investigation. The approval, which may be withdrawn at any time, expires December 31, 1947, unless renewed. For charges over 1-1/2 pounds, the following additional requirements must be observed: (1) Shot holes must be 6 feet or greater in length. (2) Explosives must be charged in a continuous train with no cartridges deliberately deformed or crushed, with all car- tridges in contact with each other, and with the end cartridges touching the rear of the hole and the stemming, respectively. (3) The permissible explosive must be one showing toxic gas omission that will place it in either Class A or Class B."

"INTRODUCTION In previous reports 5,6./ results were given showing the amount of natural ventilation that takes place in manholes (capacities, 74.1 to 308 cubic feet) when the number of ventilation openings in the manhole cover ranged from no openings to a maximum of 4g.The tests warranted the general conclusion that the ventilation or air changes taking place in, a manhole increase as the area of openings in the cover of the manhole is increased, and are proportional (with the exception of a few erratic tests) to the area of the openings in the cover. The area of the openings was the chief factor that affected ventilation.The results did not show any marked change in rate of ventilation due to increased capacity or shape of manhole, when the results were expressed in terms of air changes per day versus area of ventilation openings in square inches per 100 cubic feet of manhole space.It was observed during these investigations that in certain tests that showed erratic results (that is, did not agree with the general average for a given set of test conditions) the wind velocity during the test period was also abnormal. In view of these findings it was decided to conduct a series of tests in which the wind velocity across the openings in the manhole cover could be controlled accurately to determine the effect of wind velocity on ventilation rate."

Apply state-of-the-art monitoring and computer systems technology to remotely monitor geostructural data and evaluate ground conditions in near real-time. Background Recently, the coal mining industry has progressed dramatically from a labor-intensive industry to highly mechanized and automated systems achieving significantly higher production rates. In underground longwall coal mines, production and face advance rates have increased by almost tenfold in the last 15 to 20 years. With increasingly high advance rates, geologic anomalies which affect rock mass quality are encountered more frequently, far exceeding the current rate at which ground control information can be processed and analyzed. As a result, mine operators find themselves with insufficient time or resources to cope with the rapidly changing ground conditions. To keep up with the technological advancement in mining and the associated ground control problems, the Bureau of Mines is conducting a multi-phase research pro¬gram to implement a computer-assisted Ground Control Management System (GCMS). Research is ongoing at present, but when completed the system will be designed to 1) monitor and evaluate data on rock properties, geologic conditions, and rock mechanics data from underground sensors in near real-time; 2) interpret the analyses to evaluate the interaction between various critical ground control parameters; 3) assess the structural integrity of the mine; and 4) determine failure modes and provide recommendations for control measures, design modifica¬tions, and alternative support procedures. The system will be expanded into its full capability during various phases of this research program.

[The beau of Mines made its first survey of motor gasolines sold throughout the United States in 1915, a second in 1917, and a third in April. 1919. These surveys shored that motor gasoline had become notably less volatile during each two-year interval. In order to ascertain whether this change was continuing, it was planned to institute semi-annual surveys, the first of which teas made in January, 1920. Contrary to expectations based on the previous surveys, the average volatility of the gasoline tested at this time was practically identical with that of the average volatility of the gasoline from the same districts in 1919. The next survey, made in July, 1920, showed a very marked decrease in volatility but as it has long been recognized that the volatility of motor gasoline manufactured for sale during the summer months is loss tan that of gasoline made and sold during the winter, part at least of the change was attributed to this factor. The average boiling point of the samples collected in the present survey is 263 degrees Fahrenheit, as compared with 264 a year ago. This shows that the average gasoline marketed at the present time is fully as volatile as that marketed a year ago. There has been, however, a noticeable change in the character of the product: the initial boiling point and 20 per cant point are lower than a year ago, whereas the 90 per cent and end-points are higher, which indicates a greater proportion of gasolines made by blending casing-head, or natural gas-gasoline, and naphtha.]

According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) injury database, 227 knee injuries were reported in underground coal mining in 2007 [ 1]. Low-seam coal mines are those with extremely low working heights (<42?). Gallagher et. al [2] found that the average cost per knee injury in low-seam coal operations was $13,121.29. Thus, it can be estimated that the financial burden of knee injuries was nearly three million dollars in 2007. Pressure applied to the knee while kneeling and crawling is likely a risk factor. Typically, mine workers utilize kneepads to better distribute the pressures at the knee; however, their ability to reduce the stresses at the knee is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the pressure applied to the knee during static postures used in low-seam mining while not wearing kneepads and while wearing two kneepads commonly used in the industry (one articulated and one non-articulated).

Background. There is currently little information regarding factors associated with specific modes of motion segment failure using a fatigue failure model. Methods. Thirty-six human lumbar motion segments were fatigue tested using spinal compressive and shear loads that simulated lifting a 9 kg weight in three torso flexion angles (0, 22.5, and 45). Twenty-five segments failed via fatigue prior to the 10,000 cycle maximum. These specimens were visually inspected and dissected so that the mode(s) of failure could be determined.Failure modes included endplate fractures (classified into nine varieties), vertebral body fractures, and/or zygapophysial joint disruption. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine whether certain morphometric variables, amount of motion segment flexion, disk degeneration scores, and/or loading characteristics were associated with the occurrence of specific failure modes. Findings. Results indicated that stellate endplate fractures were associated with increased posterior shear forces (P < 0.05) and less degenerated discs (P < 0.01). Fractures running laterally across the endplate were associated with motion segments having larger volumes (P < 0.01). Endplate depression was more common in smaller specimens (P < 0.01), as well as those experiencing increased posterior shear force (P < 0.05). Zygapophysial joint damage was more likely to occur in a neutral posture (P < 0.01).Interpretation. These results suggest that prediction of failure modes (e.g., specific endplate fracture patterns) may be possible (atleast for older specimens)

General An important part of any mine power distribution system is its con¬nection to earth or ground. The grounding network serves to protect men and machinery from the hazards associated with electrical equipment which is operating improperly. Since the mine site is determined by the location of the rock or mineral to be extracted, the conditions required for the installation of an adequate grounding system are not always easily met. If annual rainfall is low or soil resistivity is high, an extensive array of buried metallic conductors may be necessary to assure a low-resistance connec¬tion to earth. Measurement of soil parameters can be made before the construction of a grounding grid is begun, and the configuration of a metallic network, which will yield the desired values of earth resistance and potential gradient, thereby ascertained. Proper design at the time the ground bed is installed will save much time and expense in later years. Ground conductors extend from the buried grid to each piece of mo¬bile and portable equipment via overhead lines or multi-conductor cables. In this fashion all machine frames are referenced to the same potential as the grounding medium. Protective circuitry must be installed to monitor\current flow in the ground conductors or the potential drop across the neutral grounding resistor, which is placed between the grounding grid and the neutral point on the distribution transformer secondary. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out exploratory laboratoryscale studies to identify factors that may contribute to nitrogen oxides (NOx) production associated with non-ideal detonation of blasting agents. Explosive admixture with drill cuttings, loss of fuel oil in ammonium nitrate and fuel oil (ANFO) from wicking, ammonium nitrate dissolution with water, degree of explosive confinement, ANFO density, and critical diameter were identified as contributing factors to increased NOx production under the laboratory test conditions. Experiments were also conducted to examine the effectiveness of various additives in reducing the NOx production from ANFO, emulsion, and ANFO/emulsion blends. Aluminum powder, coal dust, urea, and excess fuel oil in ANFO formulations were tested and were found to reduce both the nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) production. Fumes measurements were obtained in the NIOSH underground closed chamber from the detonation of 4.5-kg (10 lbs) charges in schedule 80 seamless steel pipe and from detonations in light weight galvanized steel stove pipe. Some exploratory tests were also conducted with 0.8-kg (1.8 lbs) charges of pulverized ANFO initiated with 0.08-kg (0.18 lbs), 50/50 (Pentolite) boosters (in the NIOSH 12-ft (3.7-m) diameter steel sphere) to measure the degree of fumes production associated with post-detonation oxidation. Ammonium nitrate, emulsion and Pentolite boosters were also detonated in an oxygen-poor environment.

General Six open-pit metal mines, five copper and one molybdenum, were visited during the course of the research. Four were investigated twice, in summer and in winter, in order to determine the effects of seasonal variations In temperature and moisture upon the measured parameters, Permission to enter the fifth mine was received too late to make an examination during the summer months. The sixth mine was visited to confirm the results obtained from the other five and specifically, to observe how the project recommendations (as will be presented in this chapter) would apply to open-pit metal mines in general. Information gathered during the ten plant visits is sufficient to form an adequate data base for the report. A complete presentation of all field trip data is given in Appendix 1. Further, a detailed description of the electrical distribution and grounding practices at each mine is also contained there. Typical System. At a typical mine as shown schematically in Figure 62, one or more substations with resistance-grounded secondaries are employed to transform the incoming utility-voltage to the lower potential used by the mining machines, generally three-phase 4160 V. At this level, pit distribution is carried on overhead lines, supported by wooden poles, to supply switchhouses located in benches near the particular piece of equipment. Improve underground mine roof bolt support systems by alleviating problems associated with certain ground support systems currently being used. Approach Convert a passive resin-grouted roof bolt system into a uniform, tensionable roof bolting system. Background Resin-grouted roof bolts are one of the most common forms of ground support in U.S. underground coal mines. These support systems can be installed with a full-column of grout and be loaded with subsequent roof movements after installation. This is called a "passive" support system. An alternative to the passive support system is the mechanically-anchored, tensioned roof bolt system. This system is installed with resin grout. This system is designed to load or tension the support during installation by using a mechanical anchor, coupling, or threaded nut after the resin has properly cured. It is called an "active" support system and is used extensively for improved strata control in a laminated geologic deposition or in difficult ground conditions. To ensure that active bolts have been properly installed, the bolt loads must be checked by using a torque wrench or other suitable equipment. Unfortunately, this practice presents potential safety hazards and has limited accuracy. Laboratory and field experiments also reveal that the torque-to-tension ratio developed on active support systems can vary by 50% from bolt-to-bolt. Variations in bolt load installations can induce stress concentrations and lead to roof degradation or failure.

Enhance coal mine worker safety and productivity by developing a means to control and predict coal mine mountain bumps. Approach The Bureau of Mines has been engaged in extensive research to understand coal mine mountain bumps and their effect on underground coal mining in the United States. Information was collected on the geologic conditions, mining techniques, and engineering parameters at five mountain-bump-prone mines. Although research has not yet evolved to the point where mountain bumps can be effectively predicted or controlled, such studies are invaluable for providing clues that can lead to the development of mountain bump mitigation technology. Case Study Results and Recommendations Mountain bumps in coal mines are explosions of the coalbed that violently release the strain energy stored within it into openings created by mining. Such an event is not only dangerous to mine workers, but can cause substantial amounts of damage to mine equipment, resulting in productivity loss and downtime. In a coal mine, the occurrence may cause coal to be expelled violently from the coal face or coal pillars or cause the mine floor to heave suddenly. Coal bumps are usually accompanied by a very loud noise and tremors or vibrations. Such ground failure:; usually occur in the vicinity of an active gob line in an active retreating room-and-pillar panel, or at or near the face in an advancing or retreating longwall mining panel.

9. Remote Sealing System Sensitivity 9. 1 Introduction In the previous sections a description of the overall system has been presented along with detailed descriptions of the equipment and techniques employed with the preliminary probing system, the seal em¬placement system and the seal checking system. In addition, the use of these subsystems in a specific mine application has been described in considerable detail. A broad range of parameters of interest was specified in the contract, as summarized in Section 1. 3. Most of these are a function of the general location; i. e. , the location of the mine, and the specific location; i. e. , the location of the boreholes. These parameters of interest include passage size, shape, depth, slope and water con¬ditions. The length, diameter and location of the boreholes within the mine passage and on the surface are critical parameters as well. A few additional parameters may affect one or more of the remote sealing subsystems. These include temperature, topography, rock and soil conditions, and underground water. While variation in these parameters will not render the system inoperative, consideration of them in the planning stages will simplify and expedite the field operation. In the following sections the effect of the various parameters on the remote sealing operation will be discussed. For clarity, the several tasks, borehole drilling and casing, preliminary probing, fly ash delivery, foam topping and seal checking, will each be considered separately.

Problem: An average of three workers a year are killed in surface mining operations when a piece of haulage equipment collides with another smaller vehicle or a worker on foot. Another three workers are killed each year when haulage equipment backs over the edge of a dump point or stockpile. Devices to monitor the blind areas of mining equipment are needed to provide a warning to operators when a vehicle, person, or change in terrain is near the equipment. Method: A proximity warning system (PWS) based on the global positioning system (GPS) and peer-to-peer communication has been developed to prevent collisions between mining equipment, small vehicles, and stationary structures. Results: A final system was demonstrated using one off-highway haul truck, three smaller vehicles, and various stationary structures at a surface mining operation. The system successfully displayed the location of nearby vehicles and stationary structures and provided visual and audible warnings to the equipment operator when they were within a preset distance. Summary: Many surface mining operations already use GPS technology on their mobile equipment for tracking and dispatch. Our tests have shown that it is feasible to add proximity warning to these existing systems as a safety feature. Larger scale and long-term tests are needed to prove the technology adequately. Impact on Industry: A PWSs that incorporates a combination of technologies could significantly reduce accidents that involve collisions or driving over an edge at surface mining operations.
