This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report describes a chromatographic method that is used for rapid field determinations of carbon dioxide in natural gas streams at a USBM helium production facility. The method employs a commercially available portable gas chromatograph that is equipped with a 10-m fused-silica capillary column coated with a porous polymer. The instrument operating parameters permit determinations to be performed over a concentration range of 10 ppm to 10 pct with a frequency of 20 samples/h. The speed at which determinations can be performed is an important factor when evaluating efficiency or troubleshooting processes at the helium facility.

This circular is one of a series dealing with the exploration, equipping, and development of mining properties, prepared and published by the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with various mining and exploration companies in the United States and Canada. This series of papers will supplement an earlier one which covered the methods and costs of mining and milling at a large number of producing mines. The present paper describes the exploration, equipping, and developing of a group of 18 claims remote from rail transportation, and the transport of equipment and heavy supplies for a distance of 120 miles by tractor over ice and winter roads, and of men and lighter supplies by airplane.

Twenty-two compressibility runs were made with helium over the temperature range -5° to 80° C and at pressures to 800 atmospheres. A Burnett apparatus was used. Data from the runs were fitted to a fourth degree polynomial equation of state in the pressure and a weighting factor of Pr-3/4 was used. All data for a particular isotherm were treated simultaneously. A temperature function was found to represent the parameters B and C. Compressibility factors determined by this investigation are believed to be accurate to better than 0.05 percent.

This report describes the washability characteristics of 18 coal samples taken from 11 drill hole cores from the San Juan Basin area of New Mexico and Colorado. The ash content of these coals could generally be substantially reduced by removing the heavy impurities. The coals were characteristically low in sulfur content; only one sample contained more than 1 percent sulfur after removing the sink-I.50 specific gravity material. The coals ranged in rank from subbituminous C to high volatile C; 11 of the samples were subbituminous A. Many of these core samples came from areas where very little fieldwork has been done; consequently, an outgrowth of this work has been an increase in known coal reserves of the San Juan Basin area.

The Bureau of Mines designed a down-fired refractory-lined combustor that efficiently burned pulverized coal to produce a gas suitable as working fluid for an open-cycle gas turbine. The gas contained relatively little carbon, so the load on the ash-separation equipment was significantly reduced. Moreover, reduction in carbon content of the gas increased the average density of the solid particles making them more amenable to removal by centrifugation. Centrifugal-type separators failed to remove sufficient ash; however, to limit blade wear enough to achieve operating periods generally deemed necessary for commercial practicability.

The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment: The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation,&apos; and ventilation. This volume of the final report describes the Roof Support subsystem of the Master Design Simulator. This model is based on popular roof support practices for different geological environments with related restrictions imposed by the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. From geological sections, the model determines the anchor horizon for roof bolts and the density of roof support necessary. The roof support subsystem is tied to both the geology and reserves subsystem and the production subsystem of the Master Design Simulator, but can also operate as a free standing model. Several case studies are presented showing the application of the model. A detailed user&apos;s manual, including a program listing, is presented in the appendices.

The goal of this program was to produce a set of baseline health and safety training materials that could be used by the metal/nonmetal mining industry to reduce injuries and to comply with federal training requirements. The materials developed are arranged in a two level outline format. The first level provides the title, course goals, background and topical outline while the second level provides a detailed outline of the course content. Visuals, designed to portray miners in a positive, attractive fashion, were done in simple line drawing so they would reproduce for handouts without loss of quality. Each of the required units in the Baseline Guides have one or more self-checks. These are designed to be suggestive of evaluation techniques the users can develop for themselves. An instructors guide and a mining terms glossary are included. In a second phase the program developed performance based training guides for Annual Retraining and Experienced New Hires in the Underground Salt Industry.

The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation,&apos; and ventilation. This volume of the final report describes the Methane Generator subsystem of the Master Design Simulator. This subsystem is used to determine methane emission rates into the mine environment. These flow rates are then used by the simulator in planning primary and secondary ventilation systems, planning a methane drainage system, and analyzing complex ventilation networks. Both steady state and unsteady state gas flows are included, and have been modeled as second order nonlinear partial differential equations. Finite difference equations are used to obtain numerical solutions to the models using a central differencing scheme. An application of the model is presented. The appendices include derivation of the gas flow equations used in the model as well as a users manual for the computer program.

This volume of the final report describes the Ventilation subsystem of the Master Design Simulator. The Ventilation subsystem has the capabilities to handle: (1) branches in parallel or series, (2) fans in parallel or series, (3) multiple fans, (4) methane, compressed air, or other injections into the system, (5) leakages and fixed quantities, and (6) calculations of absolute pressure at nodes. The program uses the Kirchoff&apos;s Junction and mesh laws, and the Hardy-Cross iterative technique to converge to the desired accuracy in solving fox the head quantity. A case study is included in the report illustrating the use of the model. The appendices of the report constitute a user&apos;s manual for the Ventilation subsystem, and include a program listing.

Manganese ores have been mined in the Batesville district since 1849. Although not continuous over the intervening years, production had totaled approximately 432,000 tons of manganese ore and ferruginous manganese ore to the end of 1953. The ores occur in deposits, essentially low in manganese content, distributed over an east-west belt 24 miles long and 4 to 8 miles wide, the core of which is about 6 miles north of Batesville, Independence County. Although the reserves of high-grade ores in the district are comparatively small, the large deposits of subgrade ores and low-grade manganiferous material comprise potential sources of supply of manganese that may have increasing future importance. The manganese occurs as primary oxide and carbonate minerals in relatively flat-lying limestone and shale formations in which they were originally deposited and as oxides in residual clays resulting from decomposition of the shale and lime-stone. Most of the deposits underlie from a few to over a hundred feet of sedimentary chert, but many occur in the residual clays on exposed slopes of chert-covered hills.

Coal is a combustible, carbonaceous, sedimentary rock that is formed by the accumulation, compaction, and physical and chemical alteration of vegetation [Simon and Hopkins 1981; Bates and Jackson 1987]. Coal is classified according to its type, grade, and rank. The type of coal relates to the plant materials from which the coal originated. The grade of coal refers to the purity of the coal-or the amount of inorganic material (including ash and sulfur) left after the coal is burned [Bates and Jackson 1987; Stefanko 1983]. The rank of coal indicates its degree of metamorphosis and roughly correlates to the geological age of the coal or the geological environment from which it has been mined [Bates and Jackson 1987]. Rank also indicates the percentage of carbon in dry, mineral-free coal [Whitten and Brooks 1973] and the degree to which the coalification process has progressed [Larsen 1981]. The geological process of coalification begins with organic materials (e.g., celluloses, lignins, and other plant compounds that are deoxygenated and then dehydrogenated) and ends with coal of various geological ages, from lignite to anthracite [Larsen 1981]. Table 3- 1 presents the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) classification of coals by rank. According to Parkes [1982], high-rank coal includes anthracite and semianthracite coal ("hard coal," with 91% to 95% carbon); intermediate-rank coal includes low-, medium-, and high-volatile bituminous and sub-bituminous coal ("soft coal," with 76% to 90% carbon); and low-rank coal includes lignite (with 65% to 75% carbon or less). The rank of coal tends to increase from the western to the eastern United States, with anthracite occurring primarily in eastern Pennsylvania [Schlick and Fannick 1971]. Most of the coal currently mined in the United States is bituminous [Given 1984]. A classification of the coal in the United States is provided in Table 3-2.

This volume of the final report describes the Subsidence subsystem of the Master Design Simulator. This subsystem uses the finite element method to simulate ground movement caused by an advancing mining face in an underground coal mine. The model is structured around the concept that the ground mass is a layered media of different thicknesses and material properties. Gob areas are considered to be unfilled with broken rock at the beginning of mining. After mining starts, the gob areas are filled with broken material which provides resistance to the lowering of the overlying strata. The model is tied to the Geology and Reserves subsystem, but it can also operate as a free standing routine. A case study is presented illustrating the application of the model. A detailed user&apos;s manual, including a program listing, is included in the appendices.

This project was a supporting effort with research contract H0230016 at White Pine Copper Company. Creep properties of White Pine rock were determined. These and properties for bolted joints were used in finite element analyses of sections of the White Pine Mine which included analysis of bed separations in the roof and sloping faults. In-situ experimental measurements were made of tension, compression, and bending of resin bolts by use of strain-gaged bolts. Evaluations of bolting effectiveness and comparisons of predicted and measured roof behavior are given.

The Bureau of Mines has studied slags associated with ferrous melting, to evaluate substitutes for the auxiliary flux mineral, fluorspar. A waste material recovered from alumina reduction cells, "used potlining," was tested in an 18-in-ID basic-lined cupola and in a 1/4-ton, pilot-scale, basic oxygen furnace (BOF). One potlining fraction, No. 1 cut, is a carbonaceous (graphitic) material and represents the bulk of the entire cell lining. The other fraction, No. 2 cut, is a refractory backup. These materials contain significant quantities of fluorine and other elements fn various compounds. The potlining fractions were blended in ratios believed representative of available materials. Both lump and pelletized forms provided extremely fluid slag. No adverse effects were found on furnace performance, chemistry or strength of the metals produced, or the environment. Fluorine recovery in the slag and fluorine losses to the scrubber water and solids were about the same as when fluorspar was used. There was apparently no lining loss from the cupola, but there was lining attack in the BOF. Since the fluidizing ability of potlining is due in part to sodium and other elements such as aluminum and silicon, less fluorine is needed in the slags when potlining is used.

[This paper gives the details of tests to determine the design of stoppings capable of withstanding a pressure, applied to either side, of 50 pounds per square inch,6 as required by section 104 (a) of the Operating Regulations to Govern Coal-Mining Methods on Leased Lands on the Public Domain, issued in 1921 and quoted oil page 3. The regulations stipulated that the design for such stoppings must lie approved by the United States Bureau of Standards. The engineers of that organization felt that knowledge of the strength of such structures with respect to the effect of explosion pressure in comparison with static pressure and the strength of the walls which furnish the abutments was insufficient to justify drafting specifications; therefore, tests were needed to give information upon which a rational system of design could be based. A study was then begun; and several series of tests, made by the United States Bureau of Mines and the United States Bureau of Standards in cooperation, grave information upon which are based the detailed specifications offered in a later section. Slabs representing concrete stoppings, with and without reinforcement, were tested at the Bureau of Standards in Washington D. C.; afterwards, full-scale stoppings were tested at the Bureau of Mines Experimental mine near Pittsburgh. It was assumed that in most coal mines the strength of the floor and roof could not be relied on, but dependence must be placed upon the strength of the coal ribs. The tests developed that the maximum strength of an unreinforced concrete stopping was obtained when it acted as a flat arch buttressed against the coil ribs; but its ultimate strength depended upon the resistance to movement offered by the coal strata against which its ends were restrained or buttressed.]

This Bureau of Mines report reviews the development of the world potash industry. The trends leading to the present market situation of oversupply arid low prices, which threaten; the domestic potash industry, are presented and analyzed. Because the major threat to the domestic industry comes from Canadian imports, the report focuses on the comparative economics of United States and Canadian production. The study resulted in these major conclusions: 1. Balance of world supply and demand is foreseeable in 1975, but it could be delayed by planned expansion. 2. Balance of U.S. supply and demand could occur as early as 1974-75 or as late as 1981. 3. Nearly all U. S. production capacity vis-a-vis Canadian competition is now uneconomic. Prices cover out-of -pocket costs for only 30 percent of U.S. production. 4. U.S. producers will be undersold by Canadians in 60 to 90 percent of the U.S. market. Canadians also will have the edge over United States and European producers in export markets. 5. U.S. firms have invested in 60 percent of the planned 1971 Canadian production, and they have large holdings in Saskatchewan. 6. The decline in the U.S. potash industry probably reduced personal income in Carlsbad, Eddy County, N. Mex, the chief potash-producing area in the United States, about $21.5 million between 1966 and 1969.

Yttrium and rare-earth element. pegmatite dikes are associated with a peralkaline granitic and nephelene syenite complex near Dora Bay on southern Prince of Wales Island. Mineralized dikes were mapped and sampled during USBM investigations in 1987 and 1988. Coarse-grained pegmatite dikes, which emanated as late-stage magmatic fluids from the intrusion, further evolved into vein-dikes and ultimately silica-rich veins. The dikes can be traced up to two miles along a north-south zone. Lithophile elements exhibit a pronounced zonation in vein-dikes and veins that are distal to the Dora Bay complex with increasing values correlating with increasing distance from the complex. The pattern of mineralization suggests very late stage magmatic fluids containing the incompatable lithophile elements were injected into a preexisting north-south fracture zone. REE mineralogy exhibit fine-grained intergrowths of principally thalenite and bastnaesite with lessor monazite and eudialyte. Euxenite contains most of the columbium values and zircon is commonly associated with the dikes. Estimates of inferred and hypothetical resource tonnage range from 1.7 X 1C6 to 8.5 X 106 st for two deposits. Contained RED (including yttrium) averages 0.5 pct and ranges up to 2.0 pct. Deposits are of polymineralic composition and about half of this resource comprises the heavy yttrium subgroup.
