Long-haul dump (LHD) vehicles used in underground mining are known to expose workers to important levels of whole-body vibration1. These vehicles are generally designed without suspension and may be categorized as small or large LHDs depending on whether their respective load capacities are lower or larger than 3.5 cubic yards. While the majority of older vehicles are equipped with a rigid or unsuspended seat, more recent LHDs often incorporate a suspension seat. The objective of this study was to define the vibration spectral characteristics of most commonly encountered large and small LHD vehicles operating in mining operations. This was done in an effort to categorize the vehicles in terms of vibration spectral classes to be reproduced on a laboratory whole-body vibration simulator to assess the vibration attenuation performance of a typical LHD suspension seat. Methods Vertical vibration measured at the seat attachment point of 8 small and 8 large LHD vehicles operating underground in typical mining operations under loaded and unloaded conditions was considered as the basis for defining the spectral classes. By regrouping the data collected for each LHD vehicle size and load condition, the overall distribution of acceleration power spectral density (PSD) of measured floor vibration was determined over the 0.5 to 20 Hz frequency range. Mean and envelopes of maximum and minimum values of PSD spectra were computed to define the spectral classes, along with the corresponding values of frequency weighted rms acceleration determined in accordance to the ISO 2631-1 standard2. These spectra were further used to calculate the displacements needed to drive a whole-body vibration simulator consisting of a platform supported by two servo-hydraulic actuators having a total stroke of ±100 mm. For validation purposes, the vibration acceleration spectra measured on the simulator were compared with the target spectra representing the spectral classes. Finally, the vibration transmissibility characteristics of a typical suspension seat were determined under sine sweep excitation using both a rigid mass load and a human subject having a mass of 62 kg and 85 kg, respectively. The SEAT value, representing the ratio of seat to base frequency-weighted rms acceleration, was further measured under each of the defined LHD vibration spectral classes by loading the seat with an 85 kg subject. Tests were repeated three times and the mean SEAT values were determined to assess the seat’s ability to reduce exposure to whole-body vibration in LHD vehicles. Results Three spectral classes applicable to both loaded and unloaded conditions were defined as shown in Figure 1: one for large and two for small LHDs. The influence of load on frequency-weighted rms acceleration was found to be negligible for large and Class I small LHDs, while a shift of the peak acceleration PSD to lower frequencies was noted for the loaded vehicles. To compare the viability of the new fuse wire arc test (FWAT) as a substitute for the comparative tracking index (CTI) for determining surface resistance to electrical tracking, the Bureau of Mines constructed a fuse wire arc tester and undertook a detailed testing program for testing insulating materials used on explosion-proof enclosures. This report describes the Bureau's apparatus, the two methods (CTI and FWAT), and the results of the Bureau's testing, showing comparisons of the FWAT with the CTI. Results showed strong correlation between the two methods, as all specimens tested that had CTI ratings of 400 V ac rms and above passed the 10-test sequence with the FWAT, whereas all specimens with lower CTI ratings failed, with the number of tests to failure corresponding roughly to the descending CTI rating order.

The bauxite diagram presented as figure 1 was developed to clarify, by graphic means, the theoretical chemical constituents of gibbsite-kaolinite-type bauxite for all possible proportions of these two minerals from pure gibbsite to pure kaolinite. The tables in the report reflect the same date. The diagram provides (1) a graphic representation of the relations of constituents with respect to a ill possible percentages of alumina and silica, (2) a basis for verifying the accuracy of analyses of gibbsite-kaolinite bauxite, and (3) a basis for estimating the type and proportion of alumina hydrate and/or silicate minerals that may be present in gibbsite-kaolinite-type bauxite. The diagram, with accompanying interpretations and use formulas, will be useful to those connected with the mining and processing of bauxite.

The increased demand for aluminum for military purposes during World War II necessitated the development of domestic deposits of alumina-bearing ores. Kaolin, siliceous bauxites, anorthosite, and diaspore-containing clays have been investigated and studied in the laboratory and pilot plant. The Bureau of Mines is preparing a series of reports covering investigations of these ores. The tests contained in this report are restricted to sintering and leaching tests on kaolin from South Carolina, where extensive deposits were proved to exist. The leach liquors were found to have substantially the same composition as those produced from the diaspore-containing clays, and therefore it would be expected that no difficulty would be experienced in producing calcined alumina of relatively coarse particle size and with other properties conforming to the specifications for metallurgical-grade alumina.

Twelve laboratories from the Western United States and Canada participated in radon progeny intercomparison measurements at the U.S. Bureau of Mines radon calibration facility in March 1987. The participants intercom pared grab-sampling and automated equipment methods at high and low concentrations of radon progeny and condensation nuclei (CN). The objective of this intercomparison was to determine if the measurement procedures and equipment of the North American facilities are equivalent. The sampling results showed good agreement among all participants. The standard deviation for the working level measurements was less than 3.5% for 1.70 working level (WL) and less than 8.8% for 0.21 WL. This relatively good agreement was achieved by using alpha standards calibrated by National Bureau of Standards (NBS) and by closely checking and monitoring airflows.

This report provides low-temperature heat-capacity data and entropies at 298.15° K. for magnesium metavanadate (MgV206) and magnesium pyrovanadate (Mg2V207). The work completes low-temperature measurements planned for alkaline-earth vanadates; an earlier report dealt with calcium vanadates.4 No similar data for these compounds have been published previously. Free energy of formation values at 298.15° K. were derived by combination of the present entropy values with heat of formation data. MATERIALS The materials used in the measurements were portions of the samples described in a previous Bureau of Mines publication by King, Koehler and Adami.5 Methods of preparation, chemical analyses, and X-ray examinations are covered in this paper. The indicated purity of the samples was 99.9 pct.

The very modest-sized mineral industry of Afghanistan was burdened for another year with problems of internal strife occassioned by the presence of Soviet armed forces. Despite this, production of the few traditional commodities continued, and the mineral industry moved to develop additional mines and plants for both traditional and new products with considerable technical and construction assistance from the U.S.S.R. Among the limited range of mineral commodities for which production was reported, there were no startling changes between 1984 and 1985. Production of both coal and natural gas advanced only slightly, despite substantially higher 5-year plan goals, and cement output was down marginally. Probably the most significant development in 1985 was the Possibility that mine and/or smelter production of copper was initiated during the year.

Demand for arsenic trioxide increased markedly during 1984 as a result of increased use of arsenical wood preservatives and increased use of arsenicals in agriculture. The increase in agricultural demand was due to a return to production of land with-held from cotton planting under an agriculture program for acreage diversion for some 1983 crops. Supplies of arsenic trioxide were more than adequate to meet increased demand, and prices either declined from, or remained at, the low 1983 levels. In June, ASARCO Incorporated announced plans to close its Tacoma, WA, smelter by mid-1985. Domestic Data Coverage.-Refined arsenic trioxide was produced by two U.S. companies. The major producer voluntarily reported its production to the Bureau of Mines, but to prevent disclosure of proprietary data, the production data have been withheld.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines used the East Fork Pine Creek watershed to conduct a pilot study for an inactive and abandoned mine lands inventory, during which techniques and methodologies would be developed for subsequent inventories. A total of 177 waste dump samples, 191 mill tailings samples, and 36 stream sediment samples were collected. Water samples were collected from 18 sample sites during five sampling events. Waste dump, tailings, and stream sediment samples were analyzed for antimony, arsenic, cadmium, copper, iron, lead, mercury, and zinc. Results indicate a multidisciplinary approach is necessary: disciplines should include geology, geostatistis, geochemistry, geophysics, biology, hydrology, and remote sensing; small prospects do not generally contribute to watershed contamination, major mine and mill sites may contribute metal enriched sediment of metal enriched water; speciation studies and bioavailability studies are important.

Provisional values for the heat of formation of europium trichloride and europium sesquioxide were determined by solution calorimetry utilizing europium metal of more than 99-percent purity. The resulting values for the heats of formation of Eu203 (cubic) and EuCls (hexagonal) were -386,970 ±l,200 cal/mole and -218,740 ±650 cal/mole, respectively, measured at 298.15° K.
