Checking Gold Content Experience has shown that in many cases error has been made because the true told content of a particular sample or deposit was not known. Fire assays of representative samples give accurate results and should be considered final in determining the gold content.

"Manganese ore from Metals Reserve stock piles at Deming, N. Mex., Cushman, Ark., and Philipsburg, Mont., were processed in the Bureau of Mines pilot plant at Boulder City, Nev., to determine their suitability for the production of electrolytic manganese. Manganese was produced successfully from all of the ores.The ores, crushed and ground to minus 33-mesh, were roasted in a Skinner furnace to reduce the manganese and were then leached with spent electrolyte, from the cells, containing sulfuric acid. Acid-leach extractions of 96 percent on Deming, 89 percent on Cushman, and 97.5 percent on Philipsburg ores were obtained. Neutralization of leaches with ammonia results in the highest manganese extraction; but Cushman and Deming leaches could not be neutralized with ammonia, because the amount required was more than enough to maintain the proper ammonium sulfate concentration. A combination of ammonia and calcine was used. However, ammonia was satisfactory for neutralization of Philipsburg leaches. Sulfuric acid needed for make-up was as follows: Deming, 0.380 pound per pound of manganese extracted when neutralized with ammonia and calcine; Cashman, 0.402 pound per pound of manganese extracted when neutralized with ammonia and calcine; Philipsburg, 0.594 round per pound of manganese extracted when neutralized with ammonia alone.All of the leach slurries settled well enough to be separated and washed in countercurrent thickeners.Impurities were precipitated with hydrogen sulfide and removed by filtration. Cushman ore solution contained only- small amounts of impurities and required 0.055 gram of hydrogen sulfide per liter of solution for purification. Deming and Philipsburg solutions contained large amounts of zinc and required 0.55 and 0.65 gram of hydrogen sulfide per liter of solution, respectively.Electrodeposition was satisfactory on all three ores and current efficiencies of 62 to 66 were obtained.A process for the production of electrolytic manganese has been developed by the Bureau of Mines, first on a laboratory scale4/ and then on a semicommercial pilot-plant scale.5/ At first the- pilot plant operated on ore from the Three Kids mine near Las Vegas, Nev., to determine the practical features of the process on ore of this type. Since completing the work on this ore, the pilot plant has been used for processing other domestic ores to obtain engineering data and other economic information regarding the amenability of such ores to the process."

"Gravitational forces have been found to be an important factor in defining the particle collection efficiency curve of inertial impactors for large particles. In general it was found that if the parameter G = gW /V 0 2 (g is the gravitational acceleration. w is the nozzle diameter and V 0 is the average fluid velocity at the nozzle throat) in greater than 10-3 the efficiency curve would shift to lower panicle sizes. No effect could be seen for lower values of G.IN'IRODUCTIONInertial impactors have long been used as classifiers for airborne particles. By proper design of the nozzles and flow rate it is possible to classify particles with a fairly sharp cut in the particle size range from approximately .02 µm to 50 µm. Because of inertial impactors wide usage they have been extensively studied calibrated and evaluated. Most of these studies have been experimental calibrations of single stages using monodisperse aerosol particles. However, due to impactor simplicity. i.e. a jet of particle laden air impinging upon a flat plate with large inertia particles crossing the streamlines and impacting upon the plate the impactor also lends itself to theoretical evaluation.The most comprehensive method for analyzing impactors theoretically is to use finite difference solutions to the Navier-Stokcs equations and solve for the velocity components and pressure at node points of a grid placed over the area of interest. Using iteration and relaxation techniques the value of the velocity vectors can be determined at these node points with good accuracy. Once the velocities arc known, theoretical particles of known size can be placed into the now field and their trajectories determined by analyzing their equation of motion using numerical methods.Rader and Marple (1985) have performed theoretical analysis on impactors and have included such factors as Ultra-Stoksian .drag and the physical diameter of the particle in their analysis. However, even with these· factors included, there appears to be discrepancy · between the experimental and theoretical results when the particle size is larger than approximately 4 or 5 µm. One possible reason for this discrepancy could be the effect of gravity on the particle as it passes through the impactor. Therefore, a program was initiated to study the effects of gravitational forces on the collection· efficiency of particles in impactors. The results of that study arc presented here."

This is the final report for U.S. Bureau of Mines contract HO-122122, which was in effect from June 30, 1972 through January 4, 1976. The work resulted in the design and construction of a large laboratory scale coal dust burner and the use of this burner to study gaseous and coal dust flammability. A new technique for determining gas phase flammability was developed and the effect of solid and gaseous suppressants on the propagation of coal dust flames was studied. In addition, a technique for measuring the C/H ratio in the flame was developed and the C/H ratio that was measured in a coal dust flame on this burner showed that the burning process was preceeded by pyroysis of the coal dust. Both experimental and theoretical studies showed that radiative trans-port is very important to the propagation of a coal dust flame.

Occupational illnesses are more difficult to identify than on-the-job injuries. Many illnesses related to occupational exposures may not be diagnosed until years after exposure; by that time, exposed workers may have changed jobs or left the workforce. Other approaches to identifying occupationally related illness are analysis of death certificate data (see chapter 2) and medical examination studies of workers known to have high exposures to hazardous agents. Figures 5-1, 5-3, 5-4, 5-6, 5-8, and 5-10 show, for each commodity, the percent of illness conditions reported to MSHA by nature of condition. Heart attacks that occurred on the job are reported without regard to work-relatedness. Figures 5-2, 5-5, 5-7, 5-9, and 5-11 show rates by year during 1986-1995 for selected conditions. Since there are many limitations on the accuracy of illness reporting, the frequencies and rates shown here should not be considered directly comparable across commodities. Figure 5-12 shows estimates for hearing loss by age among coal miners compared to a nonoccupationally noise-exposed population. These data come from a study by Franks [1996] of a group of audiograms obtained on coal miners by a commercial company. Using the NIOSH definition of hearing impairment, i.e., an average hearing threshold level for both ears that exceeds 25 dB at frequencies of 1,000, 2,000, 3,000 and 4,000 Hz, the figure shows that by age 30, more than 10% of miners suffer hearing impairment; by age 50, 90% of miners have hearing impairment. In contrast, only 10% of the nonoccupationally noise-exposed population suffer hearing impairment at age 51, and 50% of the nonoccupationally exposed population have hearing impairment at age 69. Figure 5-13 shows a similar analysis of commercial audiograms on male metal/nonmetal miners [Franks 1997]. At age 20, approximately 2% have hearing impairment using the NIOSH definition of hearing impairment described above. This increases to 7% at age 30, 25% at age 40, and 49% at age 50. In contrast, only 9% of the nonoccupationally noise-exposed comparison population have hearing impairment at age 50. Franks' analysis showed a different pattern for female metal/nonmetal miners; they developed hearing loss at the same rate as would be expected for a non-noise-exposed female population.

This paper concludes a five year program on research into the use of a portable X ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer for analyzing lead in air sampling filters from different industrial environments, including mining, manufacturing and recycling. The results from four of these environments have already been reported. The results from two additional metal processes are presented here. At both of these sites, lead was a minor component of the total airborne metals and interferences from other elements were minimal. Nevertheless, only results from the three sites where lead was the most abundant metal were used in the overall calculation of method accuracy. The XRF analyzer was used to interrogate the filters, which were then subjected to acid digestion and analysis by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP OES). The filter samples were collected using different filter holders or "samplers" where the size (diameter), depth and homogeneity of aerosol deposit varied from sampler to sampler. The aerosol collection efficiencies of the samplers were expected to differ, especially for larger particles. The distribution of particles once having entered the sampler was also expected to differ between samplers. Samplers were paired to allow the between sampler variability to be addressed, and, in some cases, internal sampler wall deposits were evaluated and compared to the filter catch. It was found, rather surprisingly, that analysis of the filter deposits (by ICP OES) of all the samplers gave equivalent results. It was also found that deposits on some of the sampler walls, which in some protocols are considered part of the sample, could be significant in comparison to the filter deposit. If it is concluded that wall deposits should be analyzed, then XRF analysis of the filter can only give a minimum estimate of the concentration. Techniques for the statistical analysis of field data were also developed as part of this program and have been reported elsewhere. The results, based on data from the three workplaces where lead was the major element present in the samples, are summarized here. A limit of detection and a limit of quantitation are provided. Analysis of some samples using a second analyzer with a different X ray source technology indicated reasonable agreement for some metals (but this was not evaluated for lead). Provided it is only necessary to analyze the filters, most personal samplers will provide acceptable results when used with portable XRF analysis for lead around applicable limit values.

"INTRODUCTION Loss of life from coal-mine explosions in the United States in 1949 was the lowest in any year since before 1870. Although fatality reports from coal nines before 1910 were incomplete,' the explosion fatalities from single disasters or individual States exceeded the 1949 total in each year as far back as 1870, when the records become fragmentary. Since 1890, the only other year in which fewer than 35 were killed was 1946, with a total of 32. Figure 1 shows the total yearly fatalities from explosions in all coal mines and those in anthracite mines alone since 1870. The fatalities in bituminous coal mines were not completely reported before 1910, but enough reports were issued by major coal-producing States to compile reasonably representative figures back to 1885. Any corrections would be additions to these totals.The reason for the moderate total of 46 explosion fatalities in 1948 and the low total of 8 killed in 1949 is thought to be the serious and careful attention devoted to elimination of coal-mine explosion hazards after the disastrous explosions in 1947. The standards now being observed generally with respect to ventilation, rock-dusting, and inspections for gas are better than those found earlier in even the mines having the best reputations for safety. Exceptions are still numerous, but they are fewer, month by month, because of the pressure of Federal and State inspections and a changing conception of the hazards that should not be permitted underground. The prevailing precautions have not eliminated all ignitions of gas or dust, but they have limited propagation to small explosions and have prevented serious loss of life.The number of ignitions (14) reported for the year was less than the average (24) for the 5 years 1944-48 and only half the average for the fiscal years 1929-44. Another favorable factor is that Bureau of Mines representatives were probably in closer contact with both small and large mines in nearly all coal-mining districts. Inspectors now assigned to individual districts are better able to keep informed on the happenings and the progress of safety in their districts. In 1948, one-fourth of the explosions were in mines that employed fewer than 10 men; this condition was duplicated in 1949."

This report presents a mathematical model for the propagation of UHF radio waves in the large cross-section tunnels of a room and pillar limestone mine, and describes the analysis of a small amount of propagation data obtained in a limestone mine. The model and analysis is based on the waveguide mode theory developed earlier for the transmission of UHF waves in coal mine tunnels, with allowance for propagation losses due to refraction into the tunnel walls, to scattering by wall roughness, and to long range random tilt of the walls. Propagation around corners and through pillars is also examined based on a ray theory approach, together with the beneficial effects of placing reflectors at intersections to significantly reduce corner losses. The theory is found to be in fair agreement with the data; however, additional in-mine measurements are needed to provide a more conclusive test of the model.

Accurate measurement and evaluation of hand-transmitted vibration from a power tool is an important issue for tool manufacturers, because they are obliged to develop low-hazard power tools for workers. The International Standard ISO 5349(1) dictates a systematic procedure for the measurement and evaluation of hand-transmitted vibration. However, the uncertainty in this measurement is too large for manufacturers to apply such data to the design and modification of power tools. There can be several sources of this uncertainty in such measurements; e.g., operator-dependent, power tool-dependent, and operational conditions (see Table 1). For a manufacturer to characterize the exposure of a power tool’s use to a given level of vibration, the relationship between these uncertainty factors and the measured vibration must be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the effect of several factors on the uncertainty in measurements. [ ] Methods In this study, some of the factors in Table 1 were selected for examination, and their effect on the measured variation was quantitatively investigated. Three tools from the same manufacturer were sampled at random in our experiments, and each of five of the same type of insert (disks or tips) was installed into each tool. Although each of the tools and inserts were of the same design and were made by the same production process, they differed from one to another, which can be a source of the variation in the measured vibration. Three human subjects participated in our experiments, which were carried out as stated in ISO 5349. The subjects were asked to maintain their posture, and the applied force was kept as constant as possible. The applied force was monitored using an indirect method, where vibration energy was displayed in real time during the experiment using a three-axis accelerometer attached to the work piece at a specified point. The appropriate range of the applied force was predetermined to cover the range of real work operations. The engineering tolerance between the inner diameter of a grit disk and the outer diameter of the tool shaft leads to an eccentricity of the mass at the center of the disk. The degree of eccentricity varies with installation, and this is another source of uncertainty. In our study, the effect of this eccentricity was investigated by carrying out repeated assembly and disassembly of an insert.

"The W. E. Dunkle mine, sometimes called the Costello Creek coal mine, is 8 miles N. 20° W. of Colorado Station on the Alaska Railroad. The presence of coal in this area has been known since the district was extensively pros¬pected for gold between 1911 and 1915. At that time, coal from this deposit was used by miners for blacksmithing. The increased demand for coal resulting from government defense projects in Alaska led to exploitation of this deposit in 1941.The inability of Alaska coal mines to supply the quantity of coal required by public and private consumers and by the armed forces in Alaska was responsible for establishment by the Army of the Coal Procurement Section of its Alaska Department. It proposed to investigate the deposits and to expedite production from the Alaskan coal fields. The Bureau of Mines closely cooperated in this program.The quality of the Dunkle coal and the favorable location of the deposit caused it to be one of the properties chosen for investigation under a joint Army-Bureau of Mines-Geological Survey program.During July 1943, the coal area in the immediate vicinity of Costello Creek was geologically and topographically mapped. by Clyde Wahrhaftig and Jacob Freedman, geologists, U. S. Geological Survey. F. A. Rutledge, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines examined the property July 18 to 22, 1943, and a project of trenching, diamond drilling, and sampling was initiated on August 4, 1943. During the project Clyde Wahrhaftig remained at the Dunkle mine to interprets drill cores and assist the author in planning the explora¬tory program. The project was completed October 7, 1943.Field investigations were under the general direction of R. S. Sanford, acting chief, Alaska Branch, Mining Division. Coal analyses were made by Maurice L. Sharp, coal analyst for the Alaska Railroad.Special mention is made of the cooperation and assistance received from Clyde Wahrhaftig, geologist, U. S. Geological Survey.The many courtesies received from the owner, W. E. Dunkle, and the members of the Army Coal Procurement Section, Alaska. Department, also are acknowledged.The W. E. Dunkle coal mine is in the Broad Pass region on the south slope of the Alaska Range at an altitude of 2,800 feet (fig. 1). It is situated within the Third Judicial Division, headquarters of which is Valdez, Alaska. The area is situated approximately at latitude 63° 15' N. and longitude 149° 30' W. and is connected with the Alaska Railroad at Colorado Station by an 11-mile gravel road that is passable throughout the year. This road is maintained by the Alaska Road Commission. A private telephone line to Colorado Station connects with the telephone and telegraph service of the Alaskan Railroad.The passenger rate from Anchorage, Alaska, to Colorado station is $12.10. Freight rates are $1.60 a hundred pounds for heavy machinery and $2.66 a hundred pounds for first-class freight.The Costello Creek coal basin is in an area of low relief and has been dissected by numerous creeks flowing down the south flank of the Alaska Range. The Dunkle coal mine is on Coal Creek, a small tributary of Camp Creek, 1,000 feet from their junction. About 700 feet below this junction, Camp Creek joins Costello Creek, which in turn empties into Bull River 1/2 mile above the latter's confluence with the West Fork of the Chulitna River. The location of the mine is shown on figure 1."

Various silicone materials have been proposed for use in mining environments. The catalytic methane sensors now employed are poisoned by silicone vapors. Activated charcoal and carbon cloth adsorbents will increase the sensor lifetimes in an environment containing significant silicone vapor concentrations. The results of a study of catalytic methane sensor operation with adsorbent materials in hexamethyldisiloxane-air mixtures are reported. Sampling techniques developed for measuring silicone vapor content of mine atmospheres are described.

The usual run time errors occur when illegal mathematical operations are attempted by MFIRE For exam¬ple, if the user enters a negative value for the input variable HEAT to model a heat sink or cooling station, a run tame error will occur because an exponential function is employed to better model the changing temperature dis¬tribution in the airways. DATA FILE ERRORS Two types of data file errors can occur. 1 An error may occur because the input data file itself is invalid This may be caused by: The data file cannot be found due to incorrect spelling, drive, or path specification Check the spelling and path at the prompt for location of the data file. The data file contains non-ASCII symbols Check op¬eration of the text processor to insure that only ASCII characters are produced Delete all non-ASCII and/or all out of place characters. 2 Data are accepted by the program, but are incorrect for the data types or ranges or the combination causes a data inconsistency This may be due to. An invalid character is located where a numerical value is required The input data value is outside the reasonable range The input data is insufficient to build the model for simulation. The input data exceeds the capacity of the program. PROGRAM ERROR DETECTION When the program is running, tracing messages are given on the screen indicating the group and lines of data that have been read and the section of the program that is executing Program termination indicates that problems are caused by the subsequent (not read) data file section. For each detected error, descriptive message starting with * ERROR * is issued and the program terminates. When a possibly wrong value and/or its calculated intermediate result is detected, a descriptive message starting with * WARNING * is issued and the program continues. If a modification of input value or calculated intermediate result is automatically made by the program, descrip¬tive message starting with * ATTENTION * is issued and the program continues. LOCATING ERRORS If a message indicates that the error condition occurred due to the data input file, locate and correct the data item. If no error message is issued, but the simulation results are not as expected, carefully check the list of input data shown in the output file WARNING messages and ATTENTION messages may reveal an error in the input data even though the program continues to operate Insure that the default values or modifications adopted by the program run are acceptable. Anomalistic data, though not incorrect or impossible, may lead to an unusual simulation For example, making a fan unusually powerful may prevent a normal strength fire from affecting the airflow distribution in the system Much care must be employed before considering an ex¬treme case. If a message indicates that the accuracy criterion in the temperature section of the program was not satisfied, a table detailing the current parameters of airways which have large fluctuation in the average air temperature from iteration to iteration is produced If the pattern of the parameters is clearly cyclical, while the variation of natural ventilation pressure is stable or cyclical from iteration to iteration, then, most likely there is no single equilibrium stage for the event If the variation of natural ventilation pressure decreases steadily though slowly, increasing the value of data item variables MADJ or ITN (on control line number 1) may allow convergence.

This report (Safety File Guidance 6.0) is the eighth in a nine-part series of recommendations and guidance addressing the functional safety of processor-controlled mining equipment. It is part of a risk-based system safety process encompassing hardware, software, humans, and the operating environment for the equipment’s life cycle. Figure 1 shows a safety framework containing these recommendations. The reports in this series address the various life cycle stages of inception, design, approval and certification, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. These recommendations were developed as a joint project between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. They are intended for use by mining companies, original equipment manufacturers, and aftermarket suppliers to these mining companies. Users of these reports are expected to consider the set in total during the design cycle. • 1.0 Safety Introduction (Part 1).—This is an introductory report for the general mining industry. It provides basic system/software safety concepts, discusses the need for mining to address the functional safety of programmable electronics (PE), and includes the benefits of implementing a system/software safety program. • 2.1 System Safety (Part 2) and 2.2 Software Safety (Part 3).—These reports draw heavily from International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard IEC 61508 [IEC 1998a,b,c,d,e,f,g]and other standards. The scope is “surface and underground safety-related mining systems employing embedded, networked, and nonnetworked programmable electronics.” System safety seeks to design safety into all phases of the entire system. Software is a subsystem; thus, software safety is a part of the system’s safety. • 3.0 Safety File (Part 4).—This report contains the documentation that demonstrates the level of safety built into the system and identifies limitations for the system’s use and operation. In essence, it is a “proof of safety” that the system and its operation meet the appropriate level of safety for the intended application. It starts from the beginning of the design, is maintained during the full life cycle of the system, and provides administrative support for the safety program of the full system. • 4.0 Safety Assessment (Part 5).—The independent assessment of the safety file is addressed. It establishes consistent methods to determine the completeness and suitability of safety evidence and justifications. This assessment could be conducted by an independent third party. • Safety Framework Guidance.—It is intended to supplement the safety framework reports with guidance providing users with additional information. The purpose is to assist users in applying the concepts presented. In other words, the safety framework is what needs to be done and the guidance is how it can be done. The guidance information reinforces the concepts, describes various methodologies that can be used, and gives examples and references. It also gives information on the benefits and drawbacks of various methodologies. The guidance reports are not intended to promote a single methodology or to be an exhaustive treatment of the subject material. They provide information and references so that the user can more intelligently choose and implement the appropriate methodologies given the user’s application and capabilities. The hazards to the public posed by abandoned mine shafts are well documented. As private development encroaches on previously mined areas, the potential for fatalities and serious injuries from abandoned mine shafts increases. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted research into cellular concrete as a material for sealing these openings. The current work involves testing the characteristics of cellular concrete before and after it had been pumped or dropped from different heights into a simulated mine shaft. Cellular concrete was pumped vertically up to and subsequently dropped from heights of 18 and 37 m into concrete forms. Wet density measurements were made at multiple sampling points in the test circuit. Air content determinations and uniaxial compressive strength testing were conducted. Research results showed significant loss in air content and changes in the characteristics of cellular concrete during pumping or dropping from various heights. Recommendations on effective use of cellular concrete for sealing abandoned mine shafts are made.

Oil-shale kerogen was processed into oil and oil products before the first oil well was completed by Drake in 1859. However, because of economic and other advantages, natural petroleum has been the principal source of liquid fuels and lubricants since 1859 and is a convenient root of many [organic] chemicals in common use today. In recent years the difference has narrowed between the cost of producing liquid fuels from well petroleum and other sources. This narrowing of cost difference has resulted both from the increased cost of finding new sources of petroleum in the United States and the experimental demonstration of lowered costs for synthetic liquid fuels by the Federal Bureau of Mines and by industry. Available petroleum resources of this country are being reduced and eventually may be inadequate to meet the demand. Alternate means of assuring an adequate supply of liquid fuels for this country include the development of processes for utilizing other carbonaceous materials such as oil shale and coal.

During the past several decades, there has been a steady increase in the number and size of experimental ovens used for carbonization research. Although many were originally intended principally for studies of coal expansion, current practice usually includes determinations of the properties of the experimental cokes. With respect to size and shatter characteristics, the cokes from the larger experimental ovens closely approximate those from duplicate charges carbonized in commercial ovens; however, they are consistently lighter and frequently less resistant to degradation by abrasive forces. To minimize these differences, some operators dry the experimental charges before carbonization. The resulting higher dry coal charge densities do, in fact, yield cokes with gravities closely approximating those produced commercially from the same coal or blend but without drying. The drying of the experimental charges may be criticized on the grounds that it represents a departure from commercial practice and may result in oxidation of the samples; for these reasons, the practice has not been universally adopted.

The Bureau of Mines estimated the remaining lode gold endowment of eight mining districts in Alaska using historic production data. A log-arithmic model of cumulative tonnage of ore processed versus cumulative grade was applied to the following districts: Chichagof, Fairbanks, Homer, Hope-Seward, Juneau, Ketchikan, Prince William Sound, and Willow Creek. To assess the remaining endowment, a computerized production data base was compiled from Bureau records. These data were aggregated in 5-yr intervals for each district. Data were sorted in order of declining grade, and log cumulative grade was plotted against log cumulative tonnage. Linear regression was performed on the data for each district. The linear equation for each curve was used to predict remaining endowment at a limiting mining grade. Based on conservative extrapolation of the grade-tonnage curves, a substantial total endowment of 8,415,100 tr oz of gold remains in the eight districts. The districts with the greatest remaining endowment are the Juneau, Chichagof, Fairbanks, and Willow Creek Districts.

Size distributions and concentrations of particulates emitted from diesel engine exhausts were measured with cascade impactors. Samples were taken from the exhaust of two types of engines using three types of fuel and operating under five different engine speed and load conditions. The measured mass median diameters of the diesel particulates were typically about 0.3 um. There was no significant difference in mass median diameter between engines or fuels and only a slight dependence on operating mode. Concentration measurements ranged from 14.2 to 250.9 mg/cu m, and calculated mass outputs, from 64 to 10,000 mg/min. Significant differences in mass output were found between engines, fuels, and especially between different operating modes. The quantity of clean dilution air that would be required to reduce the particulate mass concentration below the 2.0 mg/cu m respirable dust standard for coal mines was greater than the dilution air required to meet the standards for noxious gases for both engines tested.
