The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has in progress a study or the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines. A major problem of this study is to compare the deliveries calculated from the gas pipe-line flow formulas commonly used, with the metered deliveries from pipe lines in operation. In order to obtain such comparisons a series of tests has bean made on 25 operating pipe lines in Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, and California ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Study of the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines was made under the general supervision of H. "The O'Jack Mining Co.'s zinc and lead deposits in Jasper County, Missouri, have been worked intermittently since the early nineties; production from these deposits was greatest during World War I and II - 4,668 tons of zinc and lead concentrates. The deposits are in a sink-hole structure in which intense deformation has taken place and in areas of disturbance in the sheet-ground horizon.While high-grade ore was being mined, the operators sank seven churn-drill holes for the purpose of extending reserves. They then asked the Bureau of Mines to explore the deposit with the object of developing a reserve of lower-grade ore that could be mined by open-pit methods. Twenty-two holes were sunk. The methods of drilling and sampling and the logs of the holes, as of those drilled by the operators, are given later in this report.INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mined has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The high-purity thorium metal was prepared by the Bureau of Mines from electrolytically produced thorium alloys. The thorium-chromium and thorium-manganese alloys were separated into the component elements by vacuum distillation. Chromium and manganese impurities remaining in the thorium metal after distillation at 1,850° C were <0.005 weight-percent. Removal of volatile impurities such as aluminum, calcium, magnesium, and lead was also accomplished.

"The self-fluxing iron ores of Alabama are the foundation of the thriving iron and steel industry of that State. In addition to these deposits of self fluxing ores there are seams containing practically the same percentages of iron but too much silica. These ores at present are valueless, but if they could be concentrated by reducing the silica content, the ore reserves of the Birmingham district would be greatly augmented. A detailed report on the iron-ore deposits of the district, describing the types of ore and their extent, has been published.In forwarding its mineral conservation policies the United States Bureau of Mines has given some attention to the siliceous ores of this district.The low cost of gravity concentration gives this process first rank in the beneficiation of iron ores. For this reason many experimenters have tried to concentrate the Alabama iron ores on tables. In the face of the early failures a new trial has been made and the results have justified the effort.In this work more attention than formerly has been given to the physical, properties of the ores. The removable siliceous gangue is in the form of oolitic grains which ""shell"" out like corn, leaving the hematite as rich high-grade ""slime"" and as clean granular grains. The ""slime concentrate"" may be recovered by well known desliming processes. The oolitic grains and granular hematite are separated on tables."

"INTRODUCTION The ti taniferous-iron deposits in the Iron Mountain area of the Laramie Range, and particularly the Shanton deposit, were examined by several engineers. 3/ of the Bureau of Mines during 1942, 1943, and 1944. A dip-needle survey also was made early in 1945. 4/ Interest in this property has increased as a result of the exploratory work completed by the Bureau in 1944 on the Iron Mountain deposit, 6 miles northeast of the Shanton property.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the El Paso Natural Gas Co. investigated the effect of high temperature and pressure at short residence times on the hydrogenation of a New Mexico coal to gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons . The study was made in a bench - scale semicontinuous unit at pressures of 500 to 6,000 psig , 480 ° to 1,000 ° C , and residence times of less than 1 minute to 15 minutes . Ammonium heptamolybdate was impregnated on the coal to furnish 1 percent molybdenum based on maf coal . Coal could be rapidly hydrogenated at elevated temperatures and pressures to yield large quantities of gaseous hydrocarbons and small quantities of lowboiling oils , high in single - ring aromatics . At 800 ° C and 6,000 psig and a residence time of 1 minute , the yield of hydrocarbon gas was 43 percent and of liquid hydrocarbons 9 percent , based on maf coal . With a 15 - minute residence time , the yield of gaseous hydrocarbons increased to 68 percent with a decrease in yield of oil to 6 percent . At higher hydrogen velocities , the yields of oil were much greater but contained large quantities of asphaltene . Low concentrations of molybdenum (0.01 and 0.1 percent ) or a high concentration of iron ( 1 percent ) were ineffective at 800 ° C , 6,000 psig , and short residence time .

[As a results of work conducted during the past three years, the Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Washington at Seattle, Washington, has developed a process for the production of sponge iron. Commercial operation of this process in a 3 to 4-ton scale has been so satisfactory that its use on a large scale (20 to 100 tons per day) can be safely considered. Description of Process. The process consists in passing a mixture of iron ore and coal through a rotating kiln heated at one end to a temperature sufficient to convert iron oxide to metallic iron, discharging, cooling, and separating the sponge iron from the residual coke and silicious material on a magnetic separator. Both the coal and the ore should be crushed to peso as 6-meth scream, tans producing particles finer then 1/12 of an inch. Seventy-five parts of coal or other carbonaceous material arc charged with every 100 parts of ore), This large amount of coal is required in order to supply sufficient carbon to maintain a strongly reducing atmosphere in the charge, but may be reduced to about 65 parts per 100 parts of ore by recovering and using tae carbon that remains in the discharge product. Large-scale operation and refinements in furnace design should lower this ratio to perhaps 56 or 60 parts of coal to 100 parts of ore.]

In 1990, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 12.321 acre Black Warrior study area, one of several proposed additions to the Sawtooth Wilderness. No identified mineral resources were delineated. There were 123 lode and placer claims in or adjacent to the study area. There is a known hot spring adjacent to the study area, but presently no geothermal leases are pending. Lode mines in pr adjacent to the Black Warrior study area have produced 4,022 tons of ore from which 1,981 oz of gold and 811 oz of silver were recovered. None of the vines are currently active. During the field study 125 rock samples were taken. Significant gold assays and favorable geologic characteristics at seven properties indicate that gold occurrences and resources with byproduct metals may exist in the study area. Two other sites yielded anomalous gold assays; however, sage favorable geologic characteristics are lacking. Presently, identified gold resources are being delineated by drilling programs in the nearby Atlanta and Rocky Bar mining districts. These districts have geologic characteristics similar to the Black Warrior area. During the field study 22 placer samples were taken. In most places where an anomalous concentration of gold was found, the stream channels are too narrow for operations other than recreational suction dredges. However. One area is estimated to contain over 2 million yd3 of gold-bearing gravels.

As an aid to studies of grinding, a batch laboratory classifier and elutriator has been developed at the U. S. Bureau of Mines Metallurgical Field Office at Moscow, Idaho, in cooperation with the University of Idaho. It is designed for use in conjunction with other batch laboratory apparatus, such as ball mills and flotation machines. It is shown in Figure 1. Description and Operation of Batch Laboratory Classifier The classifying column is a cylinder 4 feet 2 inches long, of 5 3/4-inch inside diameter, and terminates at its top in a cone or funnel 18 inches in diameter at the overflow elevation. The pressure chamber is of the same diameter as the classifying column, and has a conical bottom; it is provided with two openings, one in the cylindrical portion through which water is admitted, and the other, a small drain hole, in the apex of the conical bottom. The two compartments are bolted together and communicate with each other through the medium of a constriction plate provided with 3/16-inch holes spaced 1/2 inch apart. Constriction plates having any other percentage of opening may be substituted as the needs demand water is admitted to the compartment below the constriction plate at constant pressure. The volume of eater admitted is controlled with a valve. It should be mentioned that the classifying column at the bottom, just above the constriction plate, is glass.

This paper, describing the milling practice at the oxide concentrator of the International Smelting Co., is one of a series on milling methods and costs being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The oxide concentrator is properly an integral part of the Tooele plant of the. International melting Co., located 5 miles from Tooele, Tooele County, Utah. It has a capacity of 300 tons of ore per day and uses an all-flotation process to treat custom siliceous oxidized lead ores obtained principally from the Tintic district in Utah. Ores found amenable to the process are purchased on a custom basis, the principal tonnages being obtained from the Tintic Standard and North Lily mines.

The number of petroleum refineries in the United States decreased during 1948 from 390 to 375, continuing the trend to fewer units of larger individual capacity that has persisted since the peak in number of plants was recorded on January 1 , 1936. Large - scale construction of new processing facilities continued through 1948 with a resultant gain in daily crude-oil throughput capacity of installed equipment from 6,034,252 barrels on January 1 , 1948 to 6,438,995 barrels on January 1 , 1949. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil therefore increased during 1948 from 15,472 barrels daily to 17,171 . The principal areas of expansion of facilities were the strategic seaboard districts of the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast and the East Coast , and the important Indiana , Illinois , Kentucky, etc. , district that supplies markets in the upper Middle West region . These four districts accounted for 79 percent of the total new capacity added in the United States in 1948. The relatively small petroleum- refining industry of the Other Rocky Mountain district experienced a vigorous expansion in 1948 that will continue during 1949 . Capacity building on January 1, 1949 , amounting to 341,500 barrels daily, was 25,750 barrels lower than the comparable total on January 1 , 1948, but was the second highest on record . New construction was heavily concentrated in the Texas Gulf, East Coast , and Indiana -Illinois

A preliminary examination of the mica deposits in Culberson and Hudspeth Counties , Texas , was made in September 1942 by A. B. Needham, district engineer of the Bureau of Mines . The deposits were reexamined by R. C. Redfield , associate mining engineer of the Bureau in November 1942, at which time he was accompanied by Philip S. Hoyt , geologist , and J. C. Moore , foreman of the Texas Mica and Feldspar Company . Exploratory work was started on February 16 , 1944 , and terminated on April 30 , 1944. A crew of 4 to 10 men was employed under the supervision of the authors .

A number of the pegmatites in the southern Black Hills of western South Dakota contain sheet mica; and as the demand increased during World War II the area became an important producer of strategic qualities of mica. During this period of maximum activity, the U. S.. Geological Survey made detailed studies of the geological structural control, the mineralogical associations, and the production Of many pegmatites in the Black Hills. On the basis of results of this study, and at the suggestion of the Geological Survey, several of the pegmatites were examined by the Bureau of Mines, and a few were selected for further investigation. Accordingly, the White Bear, Silver Dollar, Buster Dike, and Hot Shot mines were diamond-core-drilled in 1947. The Hot Shot mine was investigated further by deepening the shaft and crosscutting the pegmatite in 1948. The mica-bearing deposits occur in lenticular intrusions of pegmatite in schists of various mineral composition. Eleven diamond-drill holes, totaling 2,111.4 feet in length, were completed on the four deposits. The shaft on the Hot Shot deposit was deepened 44 feet to the 112-foot level, and crosscuts were driven from the bottom of the shaft to the hanging Wall and foot wall of the pegmatite. This publication briefly describes the location, ownership, and history of the deposits and gives details of the work done by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey.

The Virginia copper district is situated in North Carolina and Virginia. It contains many mines and prospects that were active at the turn of the nineteenth century. The Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic-minerals program, began a project in September 1942 to investigate and explore the most promising of the mines in the district. The Seaboard, High Hill, Durgy, and Blue Wing mines were the sites of the main project activity. This report deals principally with these four mines. Drilling did not discover any new ore shoots but indicated the persistence of known ore shoots in depth. There appears to be no indication of impoverishment of copper with depth.

"The Marvel mines 1 and 3 of the Roden Coal Co. are located in the Cahaba field in Bibb County, Ala., nearly southwest from Birmingham, an airline distance of roughly 30 miles. The coal of the Clark seam at this point has some coking properties, but at present it is sold exclusively as a domestic and steaming coal.This paper, which is the second of a series on the washability of Alabama coals, like its predecessor dealing with the Mary Lee seam,5 contains screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of a representative sample of the raw slack, and slotted-screen tests showing the proportions of flaky particles in certain selected sizes; inasmuch as this coal is not used for coke manufacture, no crushing tests have been made. These data have been obtained in connection with an exhaustive study of coal preparation in Alabama, now being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama with the cooperation of the different coal operators. As the work progresses, other papers will follow containing further data on Alabama coals and giving results obtained in preparing these coals by various methods.The only published investigative work on the Clark seam is that of Forbes,6 who gives a number of sections of this seam in Marvel No. 3 mine with proximate and ultimate analyses of face samples taken in the mine and also some analyses of delivered coal.The available information on this coal indicated that the preparation problem was one of ash reduction. In order to substantiate this information a complete analysis of the 3/4 by 3/16 inch size, and sulphur determinations and ash-fusibility tests of the float-and-sink fractions have been made; these results are given in Tables 1 and 2. As these results also indicate that the preparation problem is one of ash reduction, the tests and discussion have been devoted to that subject."

The first of this series of reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36, and succeeding reports described motor gasolines sold during the summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.£1 No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. [The oil-producing district, "Southern Oklahoma," is generally considered to be that part of the: State lying; southwest of the Arbuckle Mountains. It includes six counties: Carter, Cotton, Garvin, Jefferson, Kiowa, and Stephens. At present cost of the oil is produced from formations of Pennsylvania age. The individual crude oils resemble those produced in other parts of the State, except that the sulfur content is rather high. This report is a continuation of a study of Oklahoma crude oils3/ being made, by the Bureau of Mines, Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla. in cooperation with the State of Oklahoma. Analyses are given of 27 samples obtained from 21 fields in the southern part of the State, end the physical and chemical characteristics of these crude oils are discussed briefly. Analyses of crude oils from other Oklahoma areas and publications in which these analyses may be found are listed in tables 2 and 3.]

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay and shale mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may, in many instances, cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, it is essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed to consider operating costs. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scone of the cost tabulations shale ensue. The open-pit recovery of clay and shale is a comparatively simple operation in comparison with underground mining; nevertheless, it represents an appreciable factor in the cost of manufacture.

This supplement has been prepared to furnish information on amendments to the regulations that were approved by acting secretary of the Interior on June 24, 1946, while this report was in the press. Page 14, item 2, and page 20, item 4, have been amended by the addition of the following footnote: "Pending the development of a satisfactory multiple-shot permissible blasting unit, a blasting unit of Type II, Class A, covered by Federal Specification WB 411, December 31, 1941 (with or without Amendment 2, June 16, 1945), may be used until Decem- ber 31, 1947. Should a satisfactory multiple-shot permissible unit be made available prior to that date, this interim approval may be terminated." Page 14, footnote / has been amended to read as follows: "The use of charges over 1-1/2 pounds and not exceeding 3 pounds is approved pending further investigation. The approval, which may be withdrawn at any time, expires December 31, 1947, unless renewed. For charges over 1-1/2 pounds, the following additional requirements must be observed: (1) Shot holes must be 6 feet or greater in length. (2) Explosives must be charged in a continuous train with no cartridges deliberately deformed or crushed, with all car- tridges in contact with each other, and with the end cartridges touching the rear of the hole and the stemming, respectively. (3) The permissible explosive must be one showing toxic gas omission that will place it in either Class A or Class B."

In 1986, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied parts of the 19,747-acre Lower John Day (OR-005-006) and 7,538-acre Thirtymile (OR-005-001) Wilderness Study Areas in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The study areas are located in Gilliam and Sherman Counties, OR, about 13 mi west of Condon. The area is underlain by the Miocene-age Columbia River Basalt Group. The Thirtymile study area is inferred to have 790,000 yd3 of subeconomic gold resources averaging 93.8 mg/yd3 gold ($1.21 yd3 at a gold price of $400 per oz) in two river bars. The Lower John Day study area has five river bars with gold occurrences totaling 1.0 million yd3 and averaging 13.5 mg/yd3 ($0.17 yd3) gold. A preliminary mining feasibility estimate suggests gold could be profitably mined in the study areas from placer deposits containing at least $3.83 yd3 in gold content. Stone, sand, and gravel occur in the study areas, but more accessible deposits are closer to regional markets. No mines or prospects are in or near the study areas; however, one lode mining claim, now abandoned, was located in the Thirtymile study area. Oil and gas leases cover both study areas.
