Research conducted by the Bureau of Mines demonstrated the feasibility of preparing columbium and tantalum metals by the application of Kroll-process techniques. Yields in excess of 95 percent were obtained in a modified Kroll-process reduction apparatus constructed from nickel and Inconel.4 Operating conditions during reduction and distillation were determined. Optimum temperatures during sodium reductions ranged from 650° to 750° C and for magnesium from 700° to 800° C with retort pressures ranging from 3 to 7 psig. Undesirable vapor phase reactions occurred when temperatures exceeded 750° C during sodium reductions or 850° C with magnesium. Vacuum distillation at 850° C effectively removed volatile salts and excess reductant from the reduced metals. Calculations based on the results obtained in small scale tests indicate that reaction rates of up to 34 lb/hr could be obtained during columbium reductions and up to 60 lb/hr during tantalum reductions in production scale reac¬tors. The small, laboratory-scale techniques used in this study could be adapted to commercial practice. The reduced powder or sponge metals can be consolidated by conventional arc-melting techniques, and the arc-melted metals can be fabricated into ductile sheet at room temperature. Analyses of arc-melted buttons prepared from Kroll-process tantalum or columbium showed that tantalum of greater than 99.8-percent purity was obtained and that columbium purity exceeded 99.7 percent. A significant purification of the reduced metals occurred when they were consolidated by electron-beam melting, and the purity and ductility of electron-beam-melted Kroll-process tantalum and columbium compared favorably with the commercial metals. After electron-beam melting, the purity of the tantalum exceeded 99.95 percent, and columbium purity was approximately 99.9 percent.

The Bureau of Mines recorded and analyzed overpressure levels for three production blasts at the White Pine copper mine, Upper Michigan, to obtain representative data from single-heading blasts in a long, straight haulageway and to estimate the damage potential inherent in production blasts fired in close proximity to underground structures. Commercial pressure gages with a flat response to 1 kHz were used with an FM tape recorder to record the overpressures from one dynamite and two AN-FO (ammonium nitrate-fuel oil), 500-msec production blasts having zero-delay charge weights of about 75 lb (34 kg). The recorded waveforms from the underground blasts (1) were more complex than the typical free-air wave, (2) were of longer duration, and (3) had numerous secondary arrivals due to reflections from the ribs and roof. The waveforms showed that the zero-delay charges produced the only high overpressures. First pulse peak overpressures from the blasts ranged from 0.10 lb/in2 (6.9 X 102 N/m2) at a distance of 471.1 ft (144 m) to a maximum of 1.76 lb/in2 (121.3 X 102 N/m2) at 191,7 ft (58.4m) from the blasts. An analysis of variance of the first pulse overpressures from the three White Pine blasts showed that no statistically significant difference existed among the overpressure levels from the dynamite and AN-FO blasts and that a single equation P = 4.9 x 103 (D /W1 / 3) 2 .15, where P = overpressure in pounds/inch2, D = d-stance from the blast in feet, and W = zero-delay charge weight in pounds, could be used to describe the falloff of overpressure with distance.

Previous Bureau of Mines studies of vibrations from quarry blasts have shown that the square root of the charge-weight may be used to group particle velocity data from various charge sizes, and that empirical propagation equations may be used to estimate vibration amplitudes. Particle accelerations of the sandstone roof of the White Pine Copper mine, Michigan, were measured to determine whether similar propagation equations may be developed for underground mine blasts. Vibration data from White Pine blasts were best grouped by scaling with the square root of the charge weight. Cube root scaling did not effectively group the data. The empirical propagation equation AW1/2 = 50,000 (R/W1/2)-2.21 where A is peak-to-peak acceleration in g's, W is the zero-delay charge-weight in pounds, and R is the distance from the blast in feet, may be used to estimate maximum vibration amplitudes from production sized blasts. Vibration differences among headings and types of explosive charge (AN-FO and dynamite), while statistically significant, were not a major factor in the estimation of maximum vibration amplitudes with an empirical propagation equation. Vibration differences between types of explosive charge were larger than the differences among headings, indicating that some reduction of vibration amplitude might be gained by using AN-FO rather than dynamite. Acceleration records from both White Pine's AN-FO and dynamite production blasts show that high intensity vibrations from the delayed portions of the blast (each delay interval = 25 milliseconds) were separate events, and that the zero-delay portion of the blast produced the maximum vibration amplitudes. If the pull of the underground blast round can be maintained, a reduction of the zero-delay charge-weight may effectively reduce the maximum vibration amplitude of the blast.

The production and processing of crude petroleum and natural gas are the dominant economic sectors of the Middle East, providing more than 80 % of the region's foreign exchange. In 1992, the 15 countries that constituted the region accounted for 29.5 % of world crude petroleum output, 20 % of world natural gas plant liquid production, and 5 % of world dry natural gas production. Only Cyprus and Lebanon were not crude petroleum producers. A fairly wide range of non fuel minerals is also produced in the region. The most significant are boron minerals, bromine, chromite, gypsum, phosphate rock, potash, strontium, and sulfur. However, the variety of minerals produced, output levels, and the size of the overall non fuel mineral economy of the region is dominated by Iran and Turkey. Turkey, with a diverse mineral production and strategically situated between Europe and the Middle East, was first in world production of run-of-mine boron minerals, second in strontium behind Mexico, and fourth in pumice. It was also a significant world producer of chromite, magnesi'lm compounds, mercury, and sodium sulfate. Turkey was also the Middle East's largest cement and steel producer. Iran continued to expand output of most mineral commodities following the war with Iraq from 1980 to 1988. It was a significant world producer of gypsum and strontium and on its way to becoming a major iron and steel producer in the region. Despite a very small domestic mineral industry, Israel was second in world production of bromine and a significant producer of phosphate rock and potash. In terms of processed minerals, Israel was a major world diamond cutting center and exporter of cut diamond. Jordan ranked sixth in world production of phosphate rock. Saudi Arabia was eighth in world production of sulfur.

"INTRODUCTION The largest known deposits of ilmenite and rutile in Virginia are in Amherst and Nelson Counties. Other deposits occur in the State, but their extent is not known. One of the most promising of the latter is the deposit in Roanoke County on the T. M. Bush and the H. L. Hutchins property near Roanoke. A geophysical survey was made of the deposit, followed by core drilling. The present list supplements Information Circulars 7432 and 7569 and includes all of 'the equipment approved during the calendar year 1950. Information Circular 7465, which included a list of permissible mine equipment tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines during the calendar year 1947 therefore is superseded.

There have appeared, from time to time, comparisons of various features of coal mining practice in the United States and Great Britain. A recent, article, appearing in a British journal, points out that the American miner produces 3 1/2 times as much coal per shift as the miner, at one-half the cost, and proceeds to explain the natural industrial, and engineering causes which lead to this result. Amon« he reasons advanced. is that the American coal miner enjoys the advantage of more easily worked seams of coal, due to the fact that the coal mining industry in the United States is of more recent date than in Great Britain. The latter qualification is not correct, because where these advantages exist, they will persist. The coal beds of the United States are not buried deeply, except in the remote parts of the country, as in the Uinta Basin of Utah. The article referred to states that many of our miners are still employed on out seams reached by "adits", (which we term entries), or by vertical shafts of moderate depth. It is probable in fact that the great bulk of the coal of the United States is taken out from a depth of less than 400 feet.

"INTRODUCTION The Ward copper deposit was brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines in September 1943 by John J. Knob, 217 E. Penn Street, Long Beach, N. Y. At that time all Bureau of Mines work on Seward Peninsula was being directed to the exploration of deposits of tin, a metal high on the strategic list. On a regular basis, mine personnel should obtain air samples directly from active underground areas as well as remotely from sealed locations. These samples provide mine officials with data relative to the makeup of the various atmospheres. Should conditions underground change, these results can provide a baseline that can assist officials in determining the extent of change. Relating the concentrations of individual gases to time, applying gases to equations, and examining their change over time are tools that have been successfully used to determine if a heating event exists and, if so, the extent of the emergency. These atmospheric status equations have either been developed for the mining industry or adapted from other industries. They serve as tools to assist personnel in determining the condition of underground mine atmospheres. As long as the problem area continues to be ventilated, certain gases, gas ratios, and equations can be used to determine if a fire exists, what type of material could be burning, and what quantity of coal is burning. Once the mine or the involved section has been temporarily sealed, gases, ratios, and gas-derived equations can assist personnel in determining how conditions within the sealed volume are changing over time. To alleviate potential explosions when fresh air is once again introduced into the sealed volume, equations and a diagram have been developed to predict the likelihood of an explosive atmosphere. Similarly, prior to commencing recovery of a mine or section, equations exist that can assist in determining if the fire will rekindle when air is reintroduced. This paper serves as an overview to remind and/or instruct readers about gas-sampling methodologies and gas analyses to assist in determining the status of underground atmospheres.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYDuring the latter part of 1943 a magnetometric survey was conducted by the Geophysical Division of the Bureau of Mines at the mine, Putnam County, N. Y., in an endeavor to locate a segment of the body that reports state was cut off by a fault. The Mahepac mine was abandoned about 1895 after producing nearly 1,000,000 tons of high-grade magetite iron ore. The results of the investigation indicate the termination of the ore body by ""pinching"" or a displacement of such magnitude as to place any extension at a considerable distance the original ore body. This report describes the work done on the project and presents the data obtained. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States and Alaska since 1939. The Mahopac mine was visited by W.T. In 2005, a total of 739 nonmetal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). These mines (e.g., potash, gypsum, salt) comprised 5.0% of all operations. ? Mines producing common clay comprised 26.9% (n=199) of all nonmetal mining operations. ? Nonmetal mining operations were located in all states and territories except Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

In 1943, diamond drilling by the Bureau of Mines, comprising 11 holes which totaled 1,295.6 feet, showed that the pegmatite at Black Mountain consisted of shallow lenses in interbedded biotite-quartz-schist and impure quartzite. The average thickness of the pegmatite was 9.7 feet. Mineralization had a zonal arrangement. Beryl was most abundant near the footwall contact of the pegmatite. The average estimated beryl content of the pegmatite exposed at the surface was 0.81 percent, and the highest content of any pegmatite area was 1.75 percent. Other economic minerals were scrap mica, feldspar, spodumene, and lepidolite. Representative samples of the Black Mountain deposit failed to yield high-grade boryl concentrates by straight flotation owing to the presence of considerable spodumene. By employing heavy medium separation to remove the spodumene, 75.4 percent of the. BeO wan recovered in a flotation concentrate assaying 10.4 percent BeO.

"The United States Bureau of Mines is cooperating with the State of Utah and the City of Salt Lake in an investigation of methods of abating the smoke nuisance in Salt Lake City. In the course of this work samples of the atmosphere have been collected and analyzed in an attempt to determine the part played by sulphur dioxide or smelter gases in polluting the air at Salt Lake City.A fairly wide-spread opinion exists in Salt Lake City that the smelters contribute appreciably to the smoke nuisance. The gases discharged from the smelter stacks are believed (1) to float over the city in a heavy blanket which prevents the smoke from rising, and (2) to unite with the water vapor in the air to form corrosive fogs injurious to health and property.The first of these theories seems untenable. If the gas did not mix with air it would sink, owing to its heavier specific gravity, and form a blanket an the earth. Actually, the gas diffuses rapidly in air and any part reaching Salt Take must he thoroughly diluted. Perhaps sulphur dioxide in sufficient concentration might aid in fog formation. The more obvious nuisance, however, would be the injury to health and vegetation.The Garfield smelter is 16 miles west of the city, The Murray smelter 8 miles south, and the Midvale smelter 12 miles south. Under normal operating conditions, a relatively small amount of solid matter is discharged from these stacks. The toxic gaseous constituent of the discharge is sulphur dioxide, it is being discharged from the smelters the year round. If they are a factor in the city's smoke problem, the concentration of this gas in the air of the city should be appreciable and should increase toward the smelters, the con centration being highest with a south or a west wind."

The necessary uniformity of mixture to produce slags of regular composition and the choice of the slag—forming ingredients and products to be formed can be made only before the charge to dropped.It was found (R.I. 3096) at Kellogg, where the charge is mostly sinter, that the ratio of the slag—forming ingredients taken from each tuyere was nearly constant, in contrast to the irregular composition of slags taken similarly from a furnace whose charge consisted of ingredients differing greatly in chemical and physical nature, including size. If the charge consists almost entirely of sinter, the blast furnace should then operate more uniformly."

"INTR0DUCTIONThis publication is a third of a series devoted to falls of roof and coal in coal mines of the Western States. It gives the results of examinations of the mines of the Rock Springs coal District of Sweetwater County, Wyo., which represent the principal coal beds therein and approximately 75 percent of total production of the State.A study was made of safety conditions at all the producing mines of the district and suggestions were offered the operators regarding methods and practices which would, in the opinion of the writer, provide additional safeguards to prevent accidents from falls of roof and coal.In presenting the subject, consideration must be given to such features as character of the coal beds, depth of cover. methods of mining, timbering practice, roof testing and supervision, and for comparative purposes to certain statistical matter bearing upon relation of accidents to their causes, tonnage produced, men employed, days worked, and lost days due to accidents during the 3—year period covered by this study.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe writer acknowledges the cooperation of the officials of the various coal companies, without whose assistance this work could not have been completed.F0UR REPRESENTATIVE COAL OPERATIONSThis report relates to four representative coal operations in the Rook Springs district of Sweetwater County, Wyo., which are referred to as mines A, B, C, and D. "INTRODUCTION The first paper of this series contained data concerning the behavior of polyhalite (K2S04.MgS04.2CaS04.2H20) upon calcination and subsequent leaching with water at 100° C. It was found that upon heating polyhalite to temperatures between 298 and 500° C. the water of crystallization is driven off, leaving, an amorphous mixture of K2S04, MgS04, and CaS04. Two transition points were located; one at 298° C. which coincides with the vigorous evolution of steam; and one at 551° C. which results in the formation of a hard mass of crystals. The latter probably consist of a solid solution If the compounds langbeinite (K2504, 2MgS04), potassium dicalcium sulphate (K2304. 2CaS04), and anhydrite (CaS04). The heat of decomposition of polyhalite at 298° C. was measured and found to be 66,000 ± 5,000 calories per mol. The optimum temperature of calcination with regard to subsequent extrac¬tion with two parts of water (at "" 0° C.) is 430 to 450° C. for 65 to 100 mesh material, if one half hour at the calcination temperature is allowed. The maximum concentration of K2S04 obtainable in the extraction of calcined polyhalite is 11.4 grams per 100 grams of water. This concentration of K2304 is considerably above the equilibrium value (3.6 g. per 100 L. of H20 at 83° C.) with respect to the solid phases polyhalite, potassium calcium pentasulphate, ¬and anhydrite. The figure 11.4 K. of K2804 per 100 g. of H20 is also somewhat than the equilibrium value (9,65 g. per 100 g, H20) with respect to the solid phases potassium calcium pentasulphate and syngenite."

The Sweetwater, Castro, Trinidad, New London, and Hilltop chromite properties are situated within an area 8 miles long and 1 mile wide between San Luis Obispo city and Morro Creek, San Luis Obiso County, Calif. Development work at this group of mines was a part of a long-range project by the Bureau of Mines to develop strategic mineral reserves in the United States in accordance with the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939. The junior author of this report participated in the preliminary examinations made in 1941 of the chromite deposits that later in the same year were the subject of more intensive investigation under the immediate supervision of the senior author. The ore occurs in lenses and kidneys in masses of dunite contained in large poridetite areas. Production has boon in the form of lump ore and concentrates from disseminated ore. Work by the Bureau of Miner included surveying, mapping, trenching, sampling, and assaying. It is summarized separately in the text under the name of each mine investigated. The report gives a brief history of the district, describer the concentrating plant of the Castro Associates, and gives detailed results on sampling and assays at the various proportion.

Operations involving the processing of coal, oxygen, and steam into synthesis gas by means of two pressure-type gasifiers have demonstrated the effect of heat loss and operating variables on carbon gasified and oxygen and coal requirements. Carbon gasified is the fraction of carbon in the coal that is converted to gas. Oxygen and coal requirement is the quantity of each that is needed to produce a unit volume (M std. c.f.) of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Operating pressure of the gasifiers ranged from 150 to 300 p.s.i.g. and coal was fed at 200 to 500 lb./hr./cu.ft. of reaction-zone space. Oxygen-to-coal ratios were 8.5 to 10.5 std. c.f./lb. Heat loss and residence time have opposite effects on carbon gasified; increasing the heat loss decreases the carbon gasified, but increasing the residence time (by raising the operating pressure or reducing the coal-feed rate) increases the carbon gasified. The effects of these two factors are difficult to separate because they usually change simultaneously. A comparison of the results obtained from the operation of two gasifiers with different levels of heat loss, however, permitted the effect of heat loss to be separated from that of pressure and coal-feed rate. When the results were deter- mined on the basis of constant heat loss, increase of the residence time increased the carbon gasified until the reaction virtually had come to completion. For example, at 150 p.s.i.g., decreasing the coal-feed ratio from 500 lb./hr./cu.ft. to 200 lb./hr./cu.ft. substantially increased the carbon gasified. At 300 p.s.i.g., however, changing the coal-feed rate had little effect on the carbon gasified because the reaction had almost reached completion and further increase in residence time resulted only in a negligible change.

Longwall mining has gained the reputation as being the safest extraction method in underground coal mines. However, one of the most difficult tasks associated with longwall mining is moving the face once a panel is completed. Based on Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) fatality reports since 1996, longwall face recovery operations have claimed the lives of 5 U.S. miners and have resulted in numerous injuries. Recovery operations can be hazardous because they involve moving large pieces of equipment in very confined spaces. They are also conducted in highly stressed ground conditions due to front abutment loads generated by panel extraction. Shield removal is the most hazardous operation during face recovery because miners are constantly exposed to the unpredictable gob edge. To protect the miners, one or more walking shields, cribbing and/or other supplemental roof and standing supports are typically employed as breaker line supports as each shield is removed. At the Harris No. 1 Mine in southern WV, mobile roof supports (MRS’s) have been used in lieu of traditional walking shields on 17 face moves since 1997. MRS’s are shield-like support units mounted on crawler tracks and are commonly used during room-and-pillar retreat mining operations. For longwall recovery, the two biggest advantages that MRS’s have over traditional walking shields are that they are remotely controlled and are highly maneuverable. MRS’s have contributed to safer shield recovery and shorter move times at the Harris No. 1 Mine. This paper will address both the safety and the operational issues associated with MRS usage during shield recovery. It will also discuss new developments, including the use of the inherently safer battery powered MRS’s, which have been recently certified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration.
