"INTRODUCTION The operation of internal-combustion engines at high altitudes and the general aspects of combustion processes in rarefied atmospheres have created considerable interest in the problem of ignition and flame propagation at low pressures. Nuckolls, Matson, and Dufour 4/ have published results on the effect of low pressures on the propagation of flame in gasoline vapor-air mixtures in vessels of large capacity. The volumes of their test equipment varied in capacity from 0.425 to 125 cubic feet. Various sources of ignition were employed. These authors found that the explosive range of gasoline vapor in air decreases with decreasing pressure at pressures considerably below atmospheric, until a limiting absolute pressure of about 33 mm. mercury at ordinary temperature is reached, at which point no appreciable flame is propagated.Experiments carried out at the Bureau with natural gas-air mixtures at reduced pressures have shown 5/ that the limits of inflammability are but little affected at reduced pressures down to 175 mm. mercury. As the pressures of natural gas-air mixtures are reduced below atmospheric, the mixtures become more difficult to ignite; however, if a suitable source of ignition is employed, the limits of inflammability are as wide at 175 mm. mercury absolute pressure as they are at atmospheric pressure. In view of these observations with natural gas-air mixtures, it appears important to investigate gasoline vapor-air mixtures for possible similar behavior. For this reason the tests herein described were carried-out."

"INTRODUCTION The use of beryllium and its alloys has increased rapidly during the last decade. Further expansion of its use is limited; in part, by lack of adequately developed ore reserves. The principal commercial beryllium mineral is beryl, which is found chiefly in pegmatites and produced for market as a byproduct of the mica and feldspar industries. The coarse beryl is mined selectively, sobbed and sorted by hand, and then sold without further beneficiation. The known reserves of coarse beryl are small. No method has been available for concentrating small disseminated beryl crystals, so ores of this type have not been mined or have been left on waste dumps. Disseminated ore in low-grade unmined areas and waste dumps on developed properties is a potential source of beryl, provided a method is developed for its beneficiation.Published literature on the concentration of beryl is lacking in detail or deals chiefly with tests on artificial mixtures of pure minerals, and procedures as given were not applicable to the beryl ores tested at the Salt Lake Station. The testing procedures described in this report are independent developments. By employing these procedures, beryl was satisfactorily con¬centrated from several run-of-mine and dump ores, although these ores wore low in grade and part of the contained beryl was finely crystalline and disseminated.Beryl, quartz, and feldspar, when ground to flotation sizes, are so alike in color and general appearance that they cannot he distinguished by visual observation. The progress of the work depended on rapid determination of the grade of test products by means of the petrographic microscope. Small samples of concentrates and tailings were often cut after each addition of reagents, dried, and examined under the microscope."

Reported fiscal year 1973 studies of fires and explosions seek to develop capabilities during mining operations to detect and quench ignitions of gas in the face area, to detect and quench by means of passive or triggered barriers explosions propagating in rock-dusted coal dust, and to detect incipient fires early enough for easy extinguishment. Research discussed includes minimum air velocities to lift coal or rock dusts, surveys to determine adequacy of rock dusting, chemical agents to quench gas or coal dust explosions and their relative efficacies, spectra radiated by explosions, and nozzle sprays of extinguishants.

The Stange and Byrnes Heirs manganese mines, adjoining properties in Bland and Giles Counties, Va., have produced at least 20,000 long tons of concentrates containing 8,000 long tons of manganese. They were selected as the site for a strategic-mineral development project because of the existence of geologic possibilities for extensions of the known ore body. In plan, the long dimension of the ore body parallels the axis of a major anticline. Localization apparently is due to longitudinal and transverse fracturing incident to two-way folding. That the manganese oxides were deposited by downward-moving solutions is suggested by the fact that mineable concentrations are confined to a coarse, porous sandstone under-lain by impervious silt and clay. Bureau of Mines project work began on January 15, 1941, and was completed on April 23. The work sampling the faces of the pit, bulldozer trenching, and churn drilling. Pit sampling consisted of 132 channel samples usually 5 feet long and taken at 20-foot intervals. Seventeen trenches aggregating some 4,500 feet in length were dug by the bulldozer. Trenches averaged 12.6 feet in width and 5 feet in depth. A total of 1,978 feet of churn drilling was done in 33 holes. In preparation for churn drilling it was necessary to construct roads to 21 of the 33 sites. A total of 2,867 linear feet of road averaging 13 feet in width was built.

The Hopi Reservation is in Arizona, where coal mining can be traced to the 13th century. Bituminous coal is found in varying quantities throughout the Hopi Reservation. The Hopi Tribe has a 50 percent mineral interest in the coal resources of the joint-use area adjacent to the Navajo reservation. The only coal presently mined on acornrnercial scale from lands in which the Hopi Tribe has an interest is from the Wepo formation at the Black Mesa and Kayenta Mines. These two large surface mines, located over 50 miles northeast of most Hopi settlements, have disturbed more than 6,000 acres. Income from royalties generated by the mines provides significant economic support for the Hopi Tribe. The Office of Surface Mining's Albuquerque, New Mexico, Field Office is responsible for regulating mining and reclamation on Hopi land. The Hopi Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved June 28,1988.

Provide an operator cab to assure protection, comfortable use of controls, and good visibility. Approach A cab which raises and lowers by pivoting about d horizontal axis was Installed on two S&S cleanup tractors and tested in two underground working mines. How It Works Hydraulic cylinders actuated by a lever inside the cab cause the cab to pivot about a horizontal axis. This action raises or lowers the cab height. The total cab excursion is 14 inches. A release valve in the hydraulic system allows the cab to lower automatically if struck by a roof load or overhead obstruction. The pivoting action of the cab is engineered so that the operator maintains comfortable use of all controls at all cab heights. The movement is such that the angular relationship of the operator's ankles With the tram and brake foot controls IS consistently within 90 to 100 degrees. Figure 1 outlines the approximate position of the operator at three cab elevations.

As potash is more necessary to the agricultural economy of the United States now than ever before it is gratifying to find that the virtual stoppage of imports from Germany in late 1939 caused none of the anxious foreboding that gripped American farmers in 1914. For long decades this country, in common with tie rest of the world, depended upon German potash, but today our expanded needs can be mot from domestic sources. The present armed conflict in Europe, like that of 1914, disrupted a world monopoly, but the cartel that in recent years controlled 90 percent of the world output (see fig, 1) was an international syndicate comprising French, Polish, and Spanish as well as German producers and having reported sales agreements covering production in the U. S. S. R. and Palestine. The break-up of these commercial agreements has necessitated readjustments but generates no such alarm as the closing of a single source of supply. In striking contrast to the critical shortage that developed a quarter century ago, no increase in prices has occurred or is anticipated in the domestic market.

Thermodynamic calculations involving the oxides of tungsten and molybdenum have been hampered by lack of accurate entropies and high temperature heat contents. This paper presents work by the Federal Bureau of Mines on new low-temperature heat-capacity data leading to the evaluation of the 298.15° K. entropies of tungsten dioxide and tungsten trioxide, as well as high-temperature heat contents (above 298.15° K.) of molybdenum dioxide, molybdenum tri-oxide, tungsten dioxide, and tungsten trioxide. Included are heats of fusion of the two trioxides. The heats of formation at 298.15° K. of these four oxides are tabulated as measured by Mah4 5/ of this laboratory. Included also are the 298.15° K. entropy of Mo02 measured by Kin 6/ of this laboratory, and that for Mo03 according to Kelley and King.7/ These basic data provide a consistent compilation from which to perform accurate thermodynamic calculations involving these compounds. No previous low-temperature- heat-capacity measurements have been reported for tungsten dioxide. Seltz, Dunkerley, and DeWitt8/ measured the low-temperature heat capacity of tungsten trioxide. The only previously-reported high-temperature heat-content measurements for any of the oxides were conducted by Cosgrove and Snyder,9/ who measured molybdenum trioxide to 1,300° K.

"INTRODUCTION The Mining Branch of the Bureau of Mines has used the wagon drill to sample mineral deposits in New Mexico. This method of sampling was successful and con¬stituted an important phase of the work on five exploratory projects undertaken in 1943, 1944, and 1945. The deposits varied in topographic features, geology, mineral content, and in the physical characteristics of the rocks drilled. The altitudes ranged from 630 to 7,800 feet. Three hundred and seventeen holes totaling 6,852 feet were drilled. The deepest hole was 66 feet; the average depth was a little less than 22 feet.The results of the above-mentioned work form the basis of this report. Special attention is given to the later and more improved techniques used. This report was written with the expectation that the procedures might prove advantageous to others in the exploration and sampling of near-surface mineral de¬posits, and that a more extended use of the technique might result.AcknowledgmentsAcknowledgment is due Charles H. "INTRODUCTION The rock-bit interaction during the cutting process in underground mines has been a matter of great concern to mining operators, researchers and manufacturers, particularly after the passage of strict environmental laws. Coal cutting bears directly on airborne coal dust generation and rock cutting generates frictional sparks which may cause face ignitions, jeopardizing the productivity, safety and economy of the industry. It is imperative to investigate into the factors which have influence on bit we.ar. Hurt and Evans (1981) concluded that the point attack bits have greater ignition potential than the conventional wedge shaped bits, and also worn bits were more responsible for ignition than the new bits. The results of a study (Khair et al., 1992) suggested that after 7% weight loss, the bit should be replaced. The polycrystalline compact diamond (PDC) tipped bits are reported to be cost effective in a study done by USBM (Twin Cities Research Center), and it was stated that the PDC tipped drill bits had 80 to 100 times longer life than the ordinary tungsten carbide (WC) tipped bits.This paper presents the results of the experiments which were conducted utilizing a coal cutting simulator at the laboratory of the Department of Mining Engineering, West Virginia University, USA. The description of the machine and the experimental set-up have been described elsewhere (Khair et al., 1989; Gehi & Khair, 1994), and therefore, will not be discussed here. The rock types which were used in experimen~ are Tennessee sandstone, Berea sandstone and Indiana limestone. The operating parameters include (1) drum speed, (2) water spray pressure and (3) bit type. Besides studying the wear characteristics influenced by the above mentioned variables, the effect of these parameters on the required cutting force, specific energy consumption, acoustic emissions rate and rise in temperature of the bit were also studied. A preliminary study was also done to compare we.ar characteristics of the WC bits with those of the poly-crystalline compact diamond tipped bits."

This report describes the application of pulsed magnetic fields derived from alternating and intermittent magnetizing currents. Application of such pulsed magnetic fields to the matrix-type separator permits (1) the complete discharge of the magnetic fraction with wet feeds and (2) the dry separation at particle sizes down to 325 mesh. At smaller particle s indications are that frequencies above 60 hertz will be required. Applications of intermittent magnetizing current to the cross-belt separator give the cross-belt-separator an advantage over the conventional constant-field cross-belt and induced roll separators; the intermittent current enables the cross-belt separator to separate matted fibrous and magnetically coagulating feeds, a type of feed that occasionally occurs with mineral, industrial, and secondary materials.

"Mineralogical Composition of Cyanite RockIn the group of minerals used in making this study, the cyanite is associated with quartz, mica, and feldspar in the schist. The amount of quartz is variable, but it is always an abundant mineral. Both large and small crystals of quartz occur in irregular masses, rarely ever showing crystal outline. Mica is of the clear and dark varieties the larger crystals being dark as a rule, and the finer crystals of light color, The present mineralogical composition of the mica is rather variable as most of the original biotite and muscovite have suffered alteration, and much secondary mica is present as a result of alteration of the original mica and other minerals present, especially the larger cyanite crystals. A large part of the mica now found in the ore is chlorite, with varying amounts of Jefferisite and others, especially sericite. These are in the form of aggregates, or felt-like intergrowths filling the spaces between the quartz, cyanile, and feldspar.The feldspar is plagioclase probably mostly albite. It is white, possesses good cleavage, and is one of the hard brittle minerals of the rock. It alters to kaolin, and sericite, and more or less of these alteration minerals are present within the feldspar crystals but not separated from them.The cyanite is of two varieties, distinguished by their colors as blue and white cyanite. The blue color varies in intensity, being a pronounced blue in some crystals and paler in shade in others. Some crystals have been seen which possess the blue color in one-half of their mass and are pure white or clear in the other half. The purity of the cyanite is probably not affected by the color, but it is difficult to detect the white cyanite in the ore by macroscopic examination, so that great care has to be exercised in the selection of the ore in the field."

A construction material based on plasticized sulfur and mineral aggregate, that is superior in corrosion resistance and strength to portland cement concrete. The material can be used in the chemical, metallurgical, and fertilizer industries, and will also provide an attractive market for by-product sulfur resulting from compliance with pollution regulations. How It Is Made Sulfur concrete is thermoplastic material. Plasticized sulfur is mixed with sand and gravel aggregate heated to 375-400° F. The sulfur melts and acts as the binder or cement. The sulfur concrete is poured hot and sets at a temperature of 200° F. Full strength is attained in a few hours, compared to several days for portland cement concretes. Sulfur concrete even pours and sets in freezing weather. Although unmodified sulfur with aggregate will produce a sulfur concrete with good initial properties, it undergoes crystallographic modifications, and deteriorates with time, particularly when exposed to moisture or freeze-thaw conditions. The Bureau of Mines has developed plasticizers which, when reacted with the sulfur, give sulfur concretes with excellent moisture and freeze-thaw resistance. The plasticizers are based on mixtures of dicyclopentadlene (DCPD) and ollgomers of cyclopentadiene. About 5 percent by weight of the plasticizers is reacted with molten sui fur for several hours. The sulfur cement can be used directly or allowed to solidify for easier handling and storage.

"During the last eight years there has been a noticeable increase in the use of permissible equipment in gassy and dusty coal mines. This trend has undoubtedly been toward greater safety in mining, but in spite of this all is not well ""along the front.""In many mines those in charge, either through ignorance or supposed economy, have neglected to install sufficient copper and maintain good bonding on the rails used for return circuits to have a safe working voltage for the permissible equipment which is intended to afford them safety.Low voltage, when properly analyzed, is not economy but frequently is an expensive oversight. Burned-out armatures, controllers, rheostats, and switches are costly in themselves to repair or replace, but the greatest cost in many instances is the loss of production resulting from idle and broken-down equipment.From a safety standpoint, excessive low voltage where permissible equipment is necessary is almost criminal negligence. A burn-out of any kind is liable to cause an arc that may burn its way through a casing wall and bring about a hazardous condition if gas or dust in explosive proportions should be present. Again, all wiring, both interior and exterior to the apparatus, is subject to the extra heating consequent upon low voltage. It should be remembered that if the voltage drops the current must increase a corresponding amount in order that the same work may be accomplished; and as the heating effect is as the square of the current, an enormous overheating of the electrical parts and wiring often takes place. This heating effect is especially detrimental to trailing cables used on portable equipment, because under the most favorable conditions the size of cable selected is only barely sufficient to do its work properly at a safe working temperature; therefore, when the extra current load is added because of poor voltage, overheating is sure to result, with consequent deterioration of the insulation, This effect greatly increases the liability of cable failures in service, and in turn adds to the hazards incident to the use of portable equipment of the permissible type involving the use of trailing cables.Some manufacturers have tried -to protect their equipment from low voltage, especially below a certain point, by -installing low-voltage relays which will trip when the voltage falls to a predetermined value. It is understood that some operators have hesitated or refused to install such low-voltage protection because they were aware that the voltage conditions were so poor that the equipment could not operate under the safe limits set. It is difficult to understand how any progressive company that is willing to go to the ex-pense of installing permissible equipment could be so shortsighted in this phase of common sense, safety, and economy."

"INTRODUCTION The Blue Bell fluorite deposits were examined in August and November 1944 by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines, and an underground project was set up. The Bureau of Mines began development of fluorite here February 10, 1945, and completed its survey on June 21, 1946.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepared the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, C. C. Ralston, chief, analyzes samples and perform beneficiaticn tests. The exploratory project was under the direction of Paul T. Allsman, chief, Salt Lake City Division, Mining Branch. The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the "fire door" type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they are required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in 'Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self-Propelled Electric Face Equipment/ Automatic Emergency Brakes" by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. L. Judy (our consultant), etc:

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 234 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 21 States and 1 foreign country. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1975 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and n special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. Seventeen previous publications have presented the results of 10,831 gas analyses prior to 1975. The first 3, Bulletins 486,4 576,5 and 617,6 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960. The other 14

The properties of the Colorado Copper Co. in Sinbad Valley, Mesa and Montrose Counties, Colo., were rehabilitated and sampled by the Bureau of Mines in October, November, and December 1942. The several deposits were reexamined in March and April 1945 to obtain information disclosed by company work after December 1942. The development program included surface trenching, rehabilitation of several edits, and channel sampling of the exposures. Assay determinations wore made on 204 samples from the surface and underground workings. The results are given in the appendix. Several copper deposits in the Sinbad Valley area are similar in origin. The host rocks are sedimentary and mice in age from Pennsylvanian to Cretaceous. The Colorado No. 3 deposit occurs in the Cutler formation, which consists of many small lenses of conglomerate, sandstone, and shale. Mineralization is closely associated with faulting. On the Pyramid group the enrichment occurs in a zone of fracturing and jointing end also spreads into the adjoining sandstone. The ore deposition on the Copper Rivet claim is associated with a fault zone and is confined to en area above the contact of the Dolores-Wingate formations. Mineral deposits on the Sinbad claims occur at intersections of faults with blue-gray Pennsylvania limestone. Copper enrichment occurs along faults and as replacement of the surrounding limestone. Metallurgical tests indicate that ores from the Colorado No. 3 and Pyramid claims can be treated successfully by leaching with sulfuric acid. This method cannot be applied to ores from the Copper Rivet or Sinbad deposits because of high calcite content. Flotation tests at Boulder City, Nev., showed a recovery of less than 60 percent with a 14.24 percent copper concentrate.
