"PURPOSE OF REPORTThe purpose of this report, which is the third of a. series on the coal mines of the Western States, is to give the findings of a study of the causes and methods of prevention of accidents from falls of root and coal in the mines of Lincoln County, Wyo. The three mines covered in this report, referred to as A. B. and C, account- for 9 per cent of the coal production in the county and nearly 9 per cent of the State's total production. For comparative purposes some statistical data are presented bearing upon the relation of injuries to their causes, to tonnage produced, to men employed, to days worked, and to days lost as the result of injuries.FATALITIES IN WYOMINGTo show the necessity for this study, Table 1 given the fatalities that occurred during 1928 in the bituminous—coal mines of the United States, of the State of Wyoming of Lincoln County, and in Mines A, B, and C, followed by a brief description of the Kemmerer coal dis-trict, its coal beds and immediate roof, thickness of cover, dip of coal beds, methods of mining timbering for roof support, roof testing, and supervision. The value of non fuel mineral production in Alabama in 1991 was $539.9 million, a decrease of $20.7 million, a result of the nationwide recession that was felt throughout the State's economy. The 3.7% decline in mineral sales was due primarily to a slowdown in construction, which had a major impact in the construction minerals mined instate. Production and sales of crushed stone and sand and gravel fell significantly below the value reported in 1990. Despite the recession, Alabama moved from 21st to 20th place nationally in mineral value. Mineral industry developments in 1991 were primarily in the metals manufacturing sector. Reynolds Metals Co., Sheffield, celebrated 50 years of operation in Alabama. During the November celebration, the company dedicated a $121 million expansion that included a new casting facility and sheet rolling operation. Gulf States Steel Corp., Gadsden, completed the first full year of operation of its new multimillion-dollar continuous caster.3 The Foundry of the Shoals Inc., Florence, replaced two coke-fired furnaces with electric furnaces.

The Krueger property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in September 1943. The records of 23 old drill holes indicated an appreciable body of ore without delimiting the deposit. It appeared that additional drilling might increase this reserve sufficiently to justify mining. Accordingly, the Bureau of Mines drilled 5 churn-drill holes and 19 diamond-drill holes on the Krueger tract. The last of these holes concluding the Bureau?s project was completed in April 1947.

In a cooperative effort between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research, with input from the phosphate industry, the conversion of phosphogypsum to sulfur has been investigated. The first step in the conversion scheme involves reduction of phosphogypsum to calcium sulfide. Effects of temperature, catalyst, reaction time, and type of reductant (carbon monoxide and coal) are discussed. It was determined that phosphogypsum could be reduced to calcium sulfide at 850° to 1,000° C using either coal or carbon monoxide as the reductant. The required temperature was lowered to 750° C using ferric oxide or magnetite as a catalyst for the reduction reaction. Results indicate that as the volatiles content of the coal is increased, reaction temperature may be decreased to obtain a given conversion, or if the reaction temperature is maintained constant, the conversion can be increased. Best results were 95- to 100-pct conversion using a high-volatile coal at 800° to 850° C. Addition of a catalyst increased calcium sulfide yield when low- or medium-volatile coals were used as reductants, but had little effect when high-volatile coals were used.

The heat capacity of dimo1ybdenum carbide (Mo2C) was measured from 51° to 298° K, and the entropy at 298.15° K was evaluated. Heat content measurements above 298.15° It were conducted for dimolybdenum carbide (M0caY) and monotantalum carbide (TaC). The results were combined with known heats of formation and the 298.15° K entropy for TaC to obtain values of the heat and free energy of formation from 298.15° K to 1,400° K for MoaC and from 298.15°K to 1,800° K for TaC.

[The Anniversary-Bucky pegmatite is one of the largest, dikes in the Quartz Creek district, 21 miles east of Gunnison, Colo. The major dike consists of quartz-albite pear pagmatite and graphic granite with many quartz masses as individual cores occurring within the dike. A mining operation on one of the largest core areas has exposed several mineralogic cones directly associate with the core. These zones, including the large- units of the dike, are quartz pegmatitc, quartz-perthite pegmatite, perthite pegmatite, muscovite-feldspar -quartz pegmatite, quartz-albite pegmatite, and perthite-quartz (graphic granite) pegmatite. Muscovite and beryl are found in the muscovite-feldspar-quartz zone and are the only two products that have been marketed. Other potential products are perthite, graphic granite, and possibly small quantities of columbite-tantalite, monazite, and related radioactive minerals. The Bureau of Mines drilled two diamond-drill holes during April 1950 to investigate the largest and cost promising core area. This, report describes the results of this drilling.]

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYDiscovery of these unusual fluorite deposits was brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines late in 1951, shortly after the first locations were made. A brief investigation of the deposits by the Bureau revealed seven principal outcrops of fluorite in two areas. The smallest outcrop continuously exposes massive fluorite over an area 25 by 55 feet; the largest outcrop is a similar exposure 180 by 240 feet. The deposits, appear to be sharp-walled, low-angle, tabular ore bodies in granite and are at least 10 feet thick.The Bureau investigation of the deposits included bulldozer strip-trenching, drilling and blasting rock cuts, and channel sampling across three of the largest outcrops. This sampling indicated an average grade of 97.2 percent CaFp and 1.44 percent SiO2.Preliminary metallurgical tests on the ore indicate that it can be concentrated to acid-grade specifications by simple gravity methods. One laboratory test recovered 78.4 percent of the fluorite in a product containing 98.7 percent CaF2, 0.25 percent SiO2, and 0.10 percent Fe2O3."

Probabilistic design is gaining wider acceptance in the rock engineering community since it allows more rigorous determination of risk relating to ground fall or excavation instability. Risk analysis can be conducted by various means, but the basis is formed by either objectively or subjectively determining probability of occurrence of an event. In the case of rock engineering, this event is either instability or excavation failure. Rock mass classification systems provide objective analysis of data collected on a typically subjective basis that also relate closely to excavation stability. A probabilistic analysis technique is presented that uses statistical distributions of rock mass and material properties, ground support fixture specifications, stress conditions, opening geometry, and ground support installation quality to more rigorously determine probability of failure for an underground opening and the subsequent risk to personnel.

Tests during pillar robbing, longwall operations, and other mining activities indicate that roof-floor convergence rates can be used as an indicator of imminent roof failure. A large number of electrical-mechanical devices have been built to measure convergence as well as convergence rates, but most obstruct mine traffic and are costly and time consuming to install. The Bureau of Mines has designed and is evaluating three types of small ultrasonic units to make these measurements. The new instruments provide nonobstructing measurements up to 35 ft away. The ultrasonic transducers can be attached to a roof bolt, placed in an unsupported area (by means of a toss basket), or handheld. Total distance to the target and rate of closure are displayed digitally to 0.001 ft and 0.01 ft/min, respectively.

Sponge iron is the metallic product resulting from the reduction (removal of combined oxygen) of iron ore or other iron oxides at a temperature below the fusion point of iron. It has been used for many years in the production of certain grades of high-quality steel, such as tool and cutlery steels. The sponge iron available commercially in limited quantities for such use was produced from high-grade ores that were almost free from the contaminating elements that are generally considered detrimental to the production of certain grades of carbon tool steel. Interest in sponge iron as a scrap substitute was revived when World War II began, when the serious shortage of scrap metals for use in the production of armament caused great concern as to whether steel production could be maintained at the rate necessary for vigorous prosecution of the war effort. In its endeavor to promote a more efficient use of coal the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Illinois State geological survey and the University of Illinois, has undertaken an investigation of the coking of Illinois coals. The investigation was started by collecting from various sources the data regarding experiments already made by others; these data have been compiled and are presented herein. The present methods of using coal seem wasteful. When coal is burned in furnaces for the generation of steam, only the heat gener- ated by the fuel is utilized; possible by-products are not only lost but frequently are the source of the smoke nuisance. The volatile matter containing the tar and heavy hydrocarbon gases is difficult to burn completely in many furnaces, and its decomposition produces black smoke. When coal is coked in a by-product oven, the volatile matter is no longer a nuisance but, on the contrary, is the source of many by-products, including benzol, toluol, gas, tar, ammonia, and cyano- gen, all of which increase the value that may be obtained from coal. The coke that remains after the volatile matter has been driven off is a valuable fuel that can be used for almost all purposes for which bituminous coal can be used, and it is necessary for some metallurgical work. It has about the same heating value as anthracite coal. Because of its cleanness and its burning without smoke, it is well suited for domestic heating and the generation of steam in plants where smokelessness is demanded. The use of coke for these pur- poses would do much to eliminate smoke in cities. The best grades are regarded as essential in many metallurgical processes for reduc- ing ores to their metals. By-product coking in the United States during the past three years has increased greatly. When the ovens now in course of construction are completed, the total capacity of by-product ovens will be more than double what it was in 1913. This increase has led to a search for coals other than those now known to be available for use in by- product ovens. Tests with coals from the southern part of Illinois have indicated that coke from Illinois coal unmixed with other coals can be used for fuel purposes and that coke from mixtures of Illinois coal with low-volatile coking coal might be suitable for some metal- lurgical work. In the tests the yield of ammonia was larger than is obtained from Eastern coal. Evidently the development of methods by which good coke can be made from Illinois coals and the by-products recovered is a matter of high importance. Any investigation that will indicate how, by proper treatment, these coals can be made available to supply the market for coke and gas in the Middle West will increase efficiency in their use, and will aid in conserving the country's supply of high-grade coking coal.

A recently completed survey , made by the Bureau of Mines to determine the trend of fuel consumption at refineries in the United States , showed the following outstanding points : A decrease in the use of oil for fuel in 1927 of over 5,000,000 barrels as compared with 1926 ; a decrease in the use of coal of over : 1,000,000 short tons ; small increases in the use of both natural gas and refinery gas ; an increase in the use of petroleum coke . The decrease in fuel - oil consumption was approximately 2,000,000 barrels each in the Atlantic Coast , Texas , and Louisiana- Arkansas districts , with an increase of 1,000,000 barrels in the Indiana - Illinois district , or a net decrease of 5,000,000 barrels . The decrease in fuel- oil consumption by refineries in the Texas and Louisiana- Arkansas areas was offset largely by increased consumption of natural gas and refinery gas , whereas the increased consumption in the Indiana- Illinois region was more than offset by the decrease in coal consumption . The use of coal for fuel declined from 6,052,000 short tons in 1926 to 5,031,000 short tons in 1927. Practically all of this decrease was recorded in the Appalachian and Indiana- Illinois districts , which at the same time showed the largest percentage increase in the use of oil for fuel . It is probable , therefore , that although coal prices also fell off , a considerable quantity of oil replaced coal in this area in 1927. In addition , the group of refineries , which are by location more or less definitely committed to the use of coal for fuel , undoubtedly succeeded in saving a material amount of coal through the use of more efficient fueling methods . A total of 130,815,000,000 cubic feet of natural gas was consumed for fuel at refineries in 1927. This represents an increase of 8 per cent over the 1926 total . Nearly all of this increase resulted from the opening of a line from the Monroe field to Baton Rouge , La . Had this line not been opened , there would have been a decrease in the use of natural gas , as a number of districts , particularly the Rocky Mountain , reported decreases in its use . The use of refinery or still gases for fuel did not change materially during 1927 , there being a total of 52,807,000,000 cubic feet burned as compared with 52,077,000,000 cubic feet in 1926. Refinery gases are largely a product of cracking and , it was probably more than a coincidence that a few districts in which cracking slowed down in 1927 also reported less refinery gas used as fuel .

"INTRODUCTION Ignitions of gas at the coal face when a blast is fired electrically are often a tributed to the explosive; but sometimes the ignition cannot be explained satisfactorily in this way-in fact, ignitions have occurred when the detonator has failed explode.The possibility of such electrically by sparks from the blast between poorly insulated leading wires and detonator leg have been recognized. Several countries have provided safe types of single-shot blasting units; some have permitted the use of larger multiple-shot blasting units provided each unit is equipped with a time-limiting switch that prevents unnecessarily long application of voltage on the leading wires after the shot has occurred, the assumption being that the firing line will this be dead before damage to the wires and subsequent sparking can take place. An extensive research was made by a French commission relative to the characteristics of electric detonators and methods of firing. Along other tailings they investigated the probability of ignitions by sparks across the leading wired at the face, also the time and duration of the various events in blasting, such as ignition of the detonators, movement of the coal face, and application of firing current. They suggested, as a means of eliminating or reducing tilt possibility of gas ignitions from the blasting unit, that the timing switch of the blasting unit be designed to disconnect the blasting"

The Bureau of Mines is evaluating the thermodynamic properties of helium and helium-containing mixtures. Twenty-two compressibility runs were made with helium at 0° C and pressures to 800 atmospheres using a Burnett-type apparatus. Data from the 22 runs were treated simultaneously and as separate runs while different functional forms and weighting factors were used. A fourth-degree-polynomial equation in the pressure gives a statistically satisfactory representation of the compressibility factor when the data are treated simultaneously and a weighting factor of Pr-3/4 is used. The second virial coefficient of helium at 0° C from this investigation is 11.997±0.015 cm3 mole-1. The stated uncertainty is the random error standard deviation. Compressibility factors determined by this investigation are precise to better than 0.01 percent and are believed to be accurate to better than 0.02 percent.

These tests showed that the amount of evolved gases and their relative prorortions varied with the temperature. Magnetite mines in the Sterling tract, Orange County, N. Y., were operated almost continuously from pre-Revolutionary days until 1923. The Red-Back mine, one of several in this tract, was discovered in 1780; operated briefly in 1880; and abandoned, presumably because the iron ore contained considerable sulfur. The mine is in rough, mountainous country, with altitudes ranging from 500 to 1,100 feet. The magnetite deposit occurs in complex metamorphosed pre-Cambrian formation and is thought to be a replacement of limestone by magnetite. A dip-needle survey, completed in 1916, traced magnetic anomalies for a mile along the outcrop. A preliminary examination of the Red-Back mine was made by W. T. Millar, Bureau of Mines engineer, in December 1942. The Bureau of Mines bored seven diamond-drill holes aggregating 2,727.6 feet during the winter of 1943-44. A zone of magnetite mineralization was intersected in each of the holes.

Catalyzed diesel particulate filters (CDPF's) reduce the concentration of diesel particulate matter (DPM) and may reduce the emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) in diesel exhaust. Asamera Minerals' Cannon Mine first installed CDPF's in 1987, and currently has 12 diesel- powered vehicles equipped with CDPF's. The Cannon Mine and the U.S. Bureau of Mines collaborated to evaluate the durability and performance of a CDPF. One of the CDPF's used at the mine was periodically evaluated in the USBM's diesel emissions laboratory after 839, 1,584, and 2,881 h of in-mine service. The objectives of this report are to present results from the USBM's evaluation of this CDPF, to describe the Cannon Mine's experience and cost analysis of using CDPF's, and to make recommendations for the future use of CDPF's. CDPF's improve air quality at the Cannon Mine, but they frequently become plugged and are subject to excessive mechanical shocks and stress, shortening their useful life. Mine records indicate that CDPF's account for 0.8 to 4.9 pct of the vehicles' operating cost at the mine. CDPF life to date has ranged from 1,671 h to more than 5,992 h. Laboratory tests of the CDPF determined that DPM removal efficiency decreased and regeneration temperature increased over time.

The feldspars are a series of related aluminum silicates containing varying proportions of potash, soda, rind lime; smaller amounts of other minerals arc likely to be present as impurities. They comprise three principal types: Potash spars, microline and orthoclase (KA12Si208); soda feldspar or albite (NaA1Si308); and soda-lime e (plagioclase) fellspars. The last-named is an intermediate group ranging from albite through oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytownite to anorthite or line feldspar (CnA12Si2O8), Minor varieties are barium feldspar or celsian and a potash-barium feldspar. Perthite is a mixture of orthoclase end albite in alternate layers. Graphic granite or "corduroy spar" is an intergrowth of feldspar and quartz characteristically in the ratio of 3:1. Cornwall stone is a natural mixture of feldspar, quartz, end kaolinite imported in former years in sizable quantity from Cornwall, England. (A similar synthetic mixture, including some fluorspar, has been blended and marketed in the United States as "Carolina stone".)
