There are no producing or developing mines in the study area. The only mineral production was stone from a basalt deposit near Indian View Point. Cinders and sand and gravel have been produced from deposits within 1/2 mi (0.8 km) of the boundary. Stone, sand and gravel, and cinder deposits inside the area are not considered resources because equal or better quality material is found closer to markets. The study area has no known oil and gas, coal, geothermal, or other energy related deposits. However, in 1982 application was filed on 25,000 acres (10,125 ha) of petroleum and on 15,000 acres; (6,0/5 ha) of geothermal leases.

An award is a form of recognition given for superior performance in a special field of endeavor. Each year awards are given by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the National Safety Council to mineral industries' mines, quarries, and plants that have worked a specific number of man-hours without a lost-time injury. These awards have a dual significance in that they prove that efficiency can be attained without injury to persons. Safety awards do not result from luck or good fortune but do result from sincere desire coupled with sufficient effort and cooperation to achieve a desired goal.

Because of the inherent safety problem associated with the deposition of airborne respirable dust onto the floor and other airway surfaces, the Bureau of Mines investigated the rate of reduction of airborne respirable dust in an airway due to deposition of the particles onto the surfaces of the airway. The effects of relative humidity and air velocity on the deposition rate were examined. It was found that the deposition rate was comparable in magnitude with the Stokes sedimentation rate and that it was independent of relative humidity. However, near the dust source the deposition rate depended significantly upon the air velocity, with such dependence decreasing with increasing distance from the dust source. In addition, the size distribution of the airborne particles was approximately constant along the first 300 ft of the airway, indicating that it was not merely the larger (heavier) particles that were being deposited. These results suggest that deposition, though comparable with the Stokes sedimentation rate in magnitude, does not follow a simple Stokes-type process, and that the process of deposition remains to be explained.

[The blast-furnace operator is often confronted with the problem of determining the size of the materials which are used in the furnace burden. The statement is heard that the coke is larger or smaller or that certain ore is finer than that previously used. A screen analysis of the materials used gives a measure of the different sizes of materials in an aggregate. When one is fine and the other is coarse, the difference is obvious; but when the materials are of similar sire, it is more difficult to estimate the degree of finances or coarseness. In considering raw materials it would be desirable to be able to judge the size of the radio ideal materials entering the furnace and the burden as a whole, by one representative value, such as the average size of particle. Previous work by Perrott and Kinney3 developed a method for measuring the average size of particle in a mass of finely ground materials, and an attempt will be made to apply this method to the materials included in the blast-furnace charge and to the entire burden.]

The purposes of the research were to assess the applicability of new accident investigation methods to mining accidents, and to adapt those found to be applicable in the development of a new methodology for use in mining. The development included field testing, evaluation and modification of the new methodology. The report is in two volumes. Volume one discusses the background research, the design of a methodology for field evaluation, preliminary field tests in Utah mines, and work done to prepare for a formal, complete evaluation by federal government mine safety officials. This, volume 2, discusses the field evaluation done by the contractor and cooperating mines after the program was re-directed by the Bureau of Mines. It relates to research done during a period of approximately eighteen months, ending in April, 1983.

Develop a method for control of groundwater inflow to chronically "wet" sections of underground coal mines, in order to reduce groundwater interference with mining activity and to minimize acid mine drainage. Approach In eastern coal regions, groundwater stored in fracture zones in the rock mass can create a significant water problem for underground mining operations. Fracture stored inflow to mine workings impedes mine productivity since storage water sources usually release at the active face, creating the poor mining conditions typical of a "wet" section. Fracture water can also contribute to AMD problems when the water subsequently contacts sulfide minerals in the coal, The Bureau of Mines has developed a mine-dewatering method that eliminates many of the problems associated with mine water inflow by draining these fracture zones before the water can reach the developing face and interfere with mining activity. How it Works The dewatering method removes large volumes of the stored groundwater through high-capacity pumping from a minimal number of wells placed strategically on fracture traces (the surface expressions of fractured rock zones). These fracture traces are located through low-level aerial photographic and geologic investigation. As shown on the map, dewatering wells are sited precisely on fracture trace intersections in order to take advantage of the increased pumping capacity gained from these zones of high permeability. The Ore Hill zinc-lead mine in Grafton County, N. H., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines from March to July 1943 and from August to October 1944. Fourteen holes with an aggregate bore of 4,899 feet were diamond-drilled, the old workings were unwatered and sampled to an inclined depth of 250 feet, and the tailings dumps were surveyed and sampled. The deposit at the Ore Hill mine comprises a bedding-plane vein of massive sphalerite and galena with subordinate chalcopyrite and pyrite in a series of interbedded metasedimentary and metavolcanic schists about one-quarter mile east of their contact with the intrusive Baker Pond gneiss. The property was first opened about 1850 and was active at times to 1914. Production records are not available, but the output is believed to have been considerable. In 1944, leasers recovered a marketable mica product from mica schist from the dumps and certain outcrops. This report describes the work performed in the Bureau's investigation and presents the data obtained.

The Bureau of Mines estimated the economic feasibility of investing in a directional hole methane drainage project in the Pittsburgh coalbed for 5 yr in advance of mining. This report estimates the capital investment and operating cost of recovering 325 MMft3 of methane gas per year and the selling price of approximately 317 MMft3 of gas per year. The labor, equipment, and supply requirements were determined from those of a previous directional hole drilled at the Emerald Mine, near Waynesburg, PA. The cost of equipment, materials, services, and labor are in third quarter 1982 dollars. They were obtained from vendors, contractors, and the U.S. Department of Labor. Findings indicate a total capital investment of $1,381,160. Annual operating cost amounted to $167,690. At a wellhead price of $2.05 per thousand cubic feet, the sale of approximately 317 MMft3 of gas per year results in a rate of return on investment of approximately 25 pet.

"The purpose of this paper are (1) to present a broad picture of the recognized methods of measuring the various forms of atmospheric pollution; (2) to evaluate the significance of such measurements; and (3) to suggest suitable methods for obtaining comparative information on the concentration of contaminants in city air.The atmosphere (the gaseous envelope surrounding the earth) consists of a mixture of gases. These gases and their usual proportions are:4/The volume of water vapor in the atmosphere ranges from almost zero (in very cold weather) to about 5 percent arid averages about 1.2 percent.Strictly speaking, any other substance in the atmosphere or an excess of any of the substances mentioned (with the possible exception of water) is a contaminant. Needless to say, there are many contaminants in the atmosphere.In accordance with their physical state, contaminants may be classified as gaseous or particulate, and the latter may be classified as solid or liquid matter. Particulate matter, especially when dispersed in some medium such as air or some other gas, sometimes is referred to as dispersoid, and the complete system of gas and dispersoid is referred to as aerosol.All substances on the earth are potential sources of atmospheric contaminants. Combustible materials (particularly fuel for heating and power), sea water, earth or soil, metals, and animals (including man) are some of the important sources of contaminants.Ordinarily gases are produced by chemical processes, whereas dispersoids are produced by both chemical and physical processes. There are two general dispersoid-producing processes: (1) Condensation, in which molecules join to form larger units or particles, and (2) disintegration, in which large units are reduced to the particulate range (which for the purpose of this article may be considered to be from 100 microns, or 1/254 inch, down to molecular size) by such processes as crushing, grinding, abrading, and atomizing.“Condensoid"" is a convenient term for dispersoids formed by condensation, and ""disintegrasoid"" for those formed by disintegration. Solid condensoids are sometimes called ""fume,"" solid disintegrasoids ""dust,"" liquid condensoids ""fog,"" and liquid disintegrasoids ""mist.""5/"

"The Industrial Commission of Utah from a study of the accidents (especially the fatalities) occurring in connection with mining in the State was struck by the large number arising from lack of due care on the part of the employee injured or carelessness on the part of some fellow employee. Figures show that approximately 40% of the deaths are due to carelessness as against only ) 10% or 12% that can be laid to faulty conditions in the mines. With a view to reducing the number of these accidents an intensive campaign of education was inaugurated, conducted jointly by the Industrial Commission of Utah and the United States Bureau of Mines.Through the cooperation of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Mine Rescue Car No. 11 operating in Utah has been utilized as the means of carrying on the campaign. In making the regular training visits to the mining camps of Utah the crew of car 11 was authorized to include with the courses of instruction in Mine Rescue and First Aid, safety and health rallies, foremen's safety meetings, and appeals carried on through the public schools to stimulate an awaking of personal responsibility of miners and their familiar' in safety and health endeavor. The work was placed under the direct charge of Dr. Murray who has had previous experience in similar work and brought to the campaign helpful enthusiasm. He was assisted by Bruce Johnson, fore¬man miner of Car 11, who had been safety engineer for the U. S. Smelting Company, and R. W. Clark, first aid miner of Car 11. The expense of providing posters, literature, pledge cars, buttons, rental of special educational films and incidental expenses of foremens' meetings has been born by the Industrial Commission.Plan of the Campaign.In planning the campaign the main object was to revive as much as possible, among the workers, a spirit of responsibility for safety. Any considerable reduction of preventable accidents can be accomplished only through the workers themselves who are responsible for such accidents, therefore, the more personal the application could be made to all the workers the greater the accruing results would be."

This paper describes mining and milling methods of the American Smelting & Refining Co. at the Morning mine in the Mullan area of the Coeur d'Alene mining region in Idaho and is one of a series of Bureau of Mines reports dealing with methods and costs of mining throughout the United States. The Morning mine has been described previously in a Bureau of Mines report published in 1930,2/ and the milling methods and costs at the Morning concentrator were presented in a Bureau of Mines report published in 1932. 3/ These reports are supplemented by this publication, which presents data to show the effect of changing times and conditions on a typical medium-size mining operation during the latter part of its history, when costs were rising and production was from increasingly greater depths. The report contrasts two periods in the history of the mine-periods not too far separated in years but considerably different in economic conditions. During the first period (1939) costs of labor and materials were moderate, mining operations were just being transferred from the main shaft to deeper workings opened from the offset shaft, and the operation prospered. During the second period (12 years later) production costs had increased following the national trend in all industry, mining was from greater depths near the bottom of the ore body, and the operation was becoming unprofitable. Mining on the lower levels of the property ceased in 1953.

This paper on. the physical and chemical properties of crude oils from California fields is one of a series of reports on the oil-producing districts of the United States., The paper includes a short discussion of results, tabular data, and individual analyses of eight California crudes. Analyses of other crude oils from California have been published in Reports, of Investigations 2595,3/ 2608,4/ and 28465/. The samples were obtained by members of the San Francisco office of the Bureau of Mines. The collecting samples was facilitated by the courtesy of representatives of oil companies in California.

This paper is a tabular compilation of data contained in a series of information circulars dealing with mining methods and costs at a large number of mines in the United States and some foreign countries. There circulars have been published from time to time during the years 1929 to 1934 inclusive. From time to time, as enough data became available in these circulars, other circulars and. bulletins have been published in which the data bearing upon different phases of nine operation were summarized, discussed, and analyzed. The present paper is a compilation of data on costs of drifting and crosscutting contained in earlier circulars, .designed to assemble this information in a convenient form for reference without attempting lengthy discussion of details of drifting and crosscutting practice. For such details the reader is referred to the circulars on individual mines.

Past reports by the Bureau of Mines have described the extraction of alumina from numerous aluminum silicate materials by the lime-soda sinter process. The results from pilot-plant investigations of six materials, with alumina-to-silica mole ratios from 0.3 to 8.7, indicated a relationship between the alumina-silica ratios and the processing characteristics of the sinter. A series of laboratory tests was conducted to define this relationship. Sinter and leach tests determined that an alumina-to-silica mole ratio of 0.90 or greater resulted in the best alumina and soda recoveries while leaving the leach slurries practically free from any tendency toward gelation. The widely different chemical and mineralogic properties of the various aluminous materials used in compounding the mixes had no perceptible effect on the leaching characteristics of the sinter. The blending of low-cost, high-alumina materials with aluminum silicate materials to give an alumina-to-silica mole ratio of 0.90 or greater would improve alumina and soda extraction and minimize operating problems in the lime-soda sinter process.

Many challenges are faced by workers in lower-seam (42 inches or less) mines. The lower-seam heights confine mine workers to their knees as they perform their daily tasks such as installing roof bolts, delivering supplies, repairing belt, or cutting coal. Miners working in these lower seams often consider kneepads to be their only line of defense against knee injuries. However, healthy knees do not start and stop with kneepads. Other interventions such as changing postures, proper hygiene, and work station design may also be used to reduce mine workers? risks for developing knee injuries. Incorporating these and many other interventions into a mine worker?s ?way of life? is an important step to ensuring a long, healthy career and retirement. Keeping knees healthy is also a key aspect to reducing costs in low-seam mines as the industry battles rising health care costs, and training/recruitment of replacement workers is time-consuming and costly. Educating the workforce about the possible interventions to reduce knee injury risk is a primary objective for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). Therefore, NIOSH researchers, along with industry and academia, developed a training package to educate the mining com­munity about some possible interventions beyond kneepads that may be used to help decrease knee injury rates. Increased awareness and simple changes are the first steps to reducing knee injuries.

Preliminary examinations of the Parker and Webb deposits were made by E. E. Maillott, Bureau of Mines engineer in July 1942. The chemical and spectrographic analyses included in this report wore made at the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at College Park, Md., under the general supervision successively of S. M. Shelton and of Paul M. Tyler, formerly regional engineer, Eastern Region. Beneficiation tests were conducted under the supervision of Frank D. Lamb. The mineral exploration was under the general supervision of J. D. Bardill, formerly district engineer. Acknowledgment is gratefully made to the St. Joseph Lead Co., in particular to John S. Throughout portions of four (4) heavily mined Appalachian states subdivided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as: District 3 -Northern West Virginia and Maryland; District'" -Southern West Virginia; District 5 -Virginia; and District 6 -Eastern Kentucky, active coal mine waste embankments associated with mechanical and/or chemical coal processing facilities of various levels of coal preparation were inventoried. For each site plant specifications, disposal techniques, embankments' characteristics, and coal source data were accumulated. Mapping at 1: 24, 000 and 1: 250,000 scale and Disposal Site Characterization forms were developed to present the findings. Associated abandoned surface and underground openings near each site were also indicated as well as locational data for each site and the areas environmental conditions - temperature, precipitation and vegetation types. A state-of-the-art review of coal preparation, waste disposal, and alternative uses of coal waste is also included.
