Under the seventh 5-year plan (1986-90), the Chinese Government continued to implement reform and to open the country further to the outside world in order to accelerate the growth of its national economy. As a result of expanded foreign economic exchanges and domestic achievements in education, science and technology, and cultural and public health undertakings, the national economy was strengthened. In 1988, there was impressive growth in the Chinese economy. The gross national product (GNP) grew by 11.2070 reaching $373.4 billion; 2 the national income grew by 11.4070 to $310.9 billion. The major problem in the Chinese economy was the imbalance between high demand and insufficient supply. Chronic shortages resulted in price increases and high inflation, which averaged 19% for China as a whole and about 30% in urban areas. Macroeconomic stability took precedence over market-oriented reform initiative. Because of rapidly growing inflation, the Government re-imposed price controls and rationing in major cities in the fall of 1988. China continued to be a major world producer of minerals, metals, and fuels. Output of the principal commodities continued to rise. The largest in-crease in production was salt which rose 24% in output in 1988; followed by sulfuric acid, 14%; cement, 12%; soda ash, 9%; caustic soda, 7%; and steel, 6%. For fossil fuels, the increase in output of natural gas was 14% in 1988; followed by coal, 3%; and crude oil, 2%. The output of electricity by thermal-fired powerplants rose by 9% while that for hydroelectric power-plants rose 7%. Although China's overall energy output has increased annually since 1980, the growth in demand continued to outstrip the supply.

To provide a means for rapidly evaluating proposed mine layouts in order to avoid potential hazards while minimizing loss of coal. The Approach: Development of a computer program that will compute many possible mine layouts by changing the mine plan until the arrangement giving minimal hazards with optimum extraction is found. How It Works: The Hazard Evasion Program for Mine Planning, developed by the Bureau's Denver (Colo.) Mining Research Center, tests hundreds of possible solutions to a mining layout, and by sorting out the 10 best (based on the criteria of maximum safety for workers with minimum abandoned coal), limits the number of choices that need to be considered and appraised for applicability to a given mine scheme. The program is applicable for room and pillar or longwall mining, for oil and gas well hazards, and for other hazards that can be described mathematically such as channel sands, potential bad roof areas, faulting, voids, or water pockets.

A new concept was proposed for a personal warning device for use by miners who may be exposed to health hazards from inhalation of alpha-emitting radionuclides, especially radon-222 and its short-lived daughters. Two successive prototype models of the proposed instrument were designed, fabricated and tested. The Personal Alpha Alarm, in its final form, weighs less than 90 g (3 ounces), and can easily he mounted on a miner's safety cap. It is powered r, by electricity drawn from the cap-lamp battery, and consumes less than 100 n A at 4VDC. It is entirely passive and has no moving parts. Alpha-radiation originating in the air around it is detected by a 5 cm2-area semiconductor-type sensor that was developed especially for this purpose. The presence of alpharadiation in the air is communicated to the wearer by means of a small flashing light-a light-emitting diode-clipped to the brim of the safety cap. When the intensity of alpha-radiation exceeds a predetermined threshold, the flashing mode changes to a continuous illumination, thus providing an alarm signal to the wearer. Because the detector senses all alpha-emitters in the air, including 222Rn, it is not able to measure Working Levels accurately. For its intended purpose, however, which is to give a timely warning of excessive levels (several times the normal control level) of radon and/or radon daughters in an individual's air environment, the Personal Alpha Alarm is expected to be a useful instrument.

This report describes the results and conclusions of the development and evaluation of a unique concept for a lightweight air powered drill tool for probe drilling in anthracite mines. A concept model of the lightweight air powered tool was constructed and evaluation testing conducted at the Kocher Coal Company Porter Tunnel Mine. The unique anchoring method proved to be extremely satisfactory and the overall light-weight air powered drill tool concept proved feasible. Based on the results of the concept model testing, two prototype production units were designed and manufactured. These prototype units proved to meet all of their design requirements of lightweight, portability, drilling controllability, structural integrity and miner acceptance. The need for a better bit and drill steel system, however, became evident during the testing program and recommendations are made for further investigation and development of a bit and drill steel system suitable for this application.

Develop a method to evaluate the effectiveness of coal scam fire surface seals so that potential problems may be corrected at an early stage, before the integrity of the surface seal is lost. Background Surface seals are the primary coal seam fire abatement method being used in the western United States. Surface seals smother a fire by denying it oxygen. The seal is usually constructed by placing a mantle of soil, four to ton feet thick, over a coal scam fire area to exclude air from the fire. The soil is compacted to increase effectiveness, and a soil cement may be used to augment the soil. In some cases, burning coal may be excavated and separately smothered or otherwise extinguished in another area; in other cases, a trench maybe excavated and backfilled with incombustible material to isolate a fire. More often, a surface seal is simply applied over and around the entire known burning area. In the 1950's, the Bureau of Mines administered a large program to treat numerous coal seam Fires across the western United States. Methods used in this program were described in Bureau of Mines Information Circular (IC) 7932, dated 1959. More recently however, various coal seam fires have been treated with surface seals under the direction of state Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation authorities. It has frequently taken years to evaluate the effectiveness of surface seals. By the time problems become evident, it has often been too late to take corrective action within the scope of the original abatement project. For this reason, the Bureau of Mines developed a means for tracking temperature trends at coal seam fire projects to obtain a better and earlier handle on the effectiveness of surface seals.

An ultralow-frequency electromagnetic fire warning alarm system with true through-the-earth signaling capabilities was developed to solve these problems. The system was originally designed for high-back room-and-pillar mines where stench systems are unusable due to the low velocity of mine air flow. However, the system has an application to all underground mines.

Because of increasing consumption of high-and super-duty refractories, the Bureau is studying the feasibility of beneficiating submarginal and marginal clays. Diverse mineral dressing tests were used to beneficiate samples from the east-central Missouri fire clay district. Standard ASTM tests were used to determine refractory properties of both crude and beneficiated clay samples. Marginal and submarginal clays containing impurities were effectively beneficiated by both wet-cyclone and wet-table treatment, but the wet-cyclone treatment was cheaper. Ion-exchange resins in the hydrogen form will probably prove more effective in removing potassium, the only alkali in Missouri fire clays to be a problem. Resins with greater cross linkage are more effective than resins with less. Roasting the crude clays before removing alkalis by chemical leaching was ineffective. By applying ultrasonic energy at a frequency of 10 to 25 kilocycles to aqueous suspensions of the clays, subsequent ion-exchange extraction of potassium was slightly improved. Higher frequency ranges did not help.

Louisiana is one of the major oil-producing States of the country. Commercial production of crude oil in the State began in 1902 and has increased to an estimated output of 157,409,000 barrels in 1945, which is the maximum production up to this time and places the State fourth in the nation. The cumulative production for Louisiana through 1944 is 1,544,481,000 barrels, and, adding the output for 1945, the total to January 1, 1946, is 1,681,890,000 barrels. Data on annual production of crude oil in Louisiana and tentative statistics for 1945 are given in table 1. The large production of crude oil in Louisiana and the present trend to utilize petroleum in accordance with its general characteristics make it increasingly important to present analytical data for crude oils. This report is the fifth of a series presenting such data obtained on crude oils from Louisiana according to the procedure used by the Bureau of Mines. Individual analyses are given for 82 samples from 64 fields; many of the samples are from recently discovered fields, and some are from new producing formations.

"INTRODUCTION In previous reports 5,6./ results were given showing the amount of natural ventilation that takes place in manholes (capacities, 74.1 to 308 cubic feet) when the number of ventilation openings in the manhole cover ranged from no openings to a maximum of 4g.The tests warranted the general conclusion that the ventilation or air changes taking place in, a manhole increase as the area of openings in the cover of the manhole is increased, and are proportional (with the exception of a few erratic tests) to the area of the openings in the cover. The area of the openings was the chief factor that affected ventilation.The results did not show any marked change in rate of ventilation due to increased capacity or shape of manhole, when the results were expressed in terms of air changes per day versus area of ventilation openings in square inches per 100 cubic feet of manhole space.It was observed during these investigations that in certain tests that showed erratic results (that is, did not agree with the general average for a given set of test conditions) the wind velocity during the test period was also abnormal. In view of these findings it was decided to conduct a series of tests in which the wind velocity across the openings in the manhole cover could be controlled accurately to determine the effect of wind velocity on ventilation rate."

The combined production value of natural abrasives, which consist of tripoli, special silica stone, garnet, and emery, decreased in 1985. Shipments of processed tripoli increased slightly in quantity but decreased 6% in value, Production of garnet, an abundant iron-aluminum silicate, increased 24% in quantity and 20% in value. There was an 11% increase in the quantity and a 7% increase in the value of refined garnet shipped when compared with 1984 shipments, a new record high. Production of crude special silica stone decreased 10% in quantity and 14% in value, and shipments of finished special silica stone products decreased 85% in quantity and 68% in value. Both the quantity and value of special silica stone finished products sold or used were the lowest since 1981. Production of emery, an impure aluminum oxide, decreased 56% in quantity and 61 % in value of product mined and shipped. [ ]

San Manuel has been a modern prodigy from its inception to its present status as a block-caving operation producing 33,000 tons per day. The deposit was discovered, prospected, and developed with modern techniques, and nearly all planning was done from results of an extensive drilling program through an average overburden of 670 feet. The Federal Government had a prominent part in the discovery and primary development of San Manuel. The first 17 holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines, and discovery of the large, low-grade, disseminated copper deposit is credited to the Bureau. A loan fund of 94 million was granted through the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to the San Manuel Copper Corp. for development of the deposit and erection of concentrating and smelting facilities. Then, while the mine was still being developed, the Defense Materials Procurement Agency contracted to buy a large amount of copper at a pegged price.

Selected glacial lake clay deposits in Minnesota were sampled, tested, and evaluated to determine their suitability for use as a bonding agent in iron ore pellet manufacturing. Preliminary tests conducted on clay samples obtained from five ancient glacial lake basins identified the clays in the Lake Agassiz glacial lake basin near Cook, Minn., as having the greatest bonding potential. An auger drilling program was conducted to obtain substantial quantities of representative material for detailed testing. The drilling indicated the presence of large clay reserves in excess of 500 million tons within the 12-square-mile area investigated. Bench scale tests indicated that the bonding properties of Cook area clays, when activated with relatively small quantities of sodium carbonate monohydrate (Na2C03?H2O), imparted excellent strength characteristics to iron ore pellets. Larger scale continuous pelletizing tests were made to confirm the bench scale results. These tests indicated that use of 1 percent activated clay alone as binder gave the iron ore pellets an overall strength slightly lower than with 0.75 percent bentonite, considered the industry standard. Use of 0.5 percent activated clay plus 0.5 percent bentonite produced better pellet strength qualities than use of 0.75 percent bentonite alone, without increasing the silica plus alumina content. The data from both bench scale and larger scale continuous tests suggest that the Cook, Minn., clays can be utilized after activation either alone or in combination with bentonite at an economic advantage over present pelletizing practice with bentonite.

PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in hearing protective devices for use in different mining environments. RESEARCH SUMMARY: Previous NIOSH research shows that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals. Also, miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and sex. As described in the National Occupational Research Agenda, problems created by occupational hearing loss include (1) the reduced quality of life due to social isolation and unrelenting tinnitus, (2) impaired communication with family members, the public, and coworkers,(3) a diminished ability to monitor the work environment (e.g., warning signals, equipment sounds, etc.), (4) lost productivity and increased accidents resulting from impaired communication and isolation, and (5) expenses for workers’ compensation and hearing aids. Although the elimination of hazardous noise is the ideal long-term solution to the noise problem, miners will likely need to rely on personal hearing protection in certain situations for quite some time. However, it is well known that noise attenuation provided by hearing protectors as they are worn during everyday use in the workplace is usually worse than when tested under laboratory conditions. Additionally, workers may refuse to wear their hearing protection for any number of reasons. Therefore, this project was initiated to evaluate practical technological advances in hearing protectors, with an emphasis toward optimizing the balance between effectiveness, comfort, overprotection, and communication ability. Currently, the necessary in-house laboratory facilities and research techniques are being finalized. Individual experiments are planned that involve analysis of new hearing protector technology under both laboratory and field conditions. The laboratory components are to consist of con-trolled studies using human subjects and/or an anthropometrically correct artificial test fixture to evaluate the adequacy/effectiveness of various hearing protective devices. Field studies are planned to determine the actual usefulness and practicality of the hearing protectors as used in diferent mining environments. Recommendations can then be offered to the mining community regarding correct earplug/earmuff usage that maximizes recognition of hazard/warning sounds while adequately protecting the miners’ hearing.

Accelerometers and pressure transducers, mounted in suspension components, can be used to monitor the ride of haulage trucks. Presently, it is difficult to tell what caused a jolt to the truck using either pressure or acceleration data alone. When information from a global positioning system (GPS) is recorded at the same time as shock pressures or acceleration data, the exact location of an event can be determined. Mine management can then determine what caused the jolt to the truck. This research is part of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) project called "Engineering controls for reduction of jolting/jarring injuries in surface mines." NIOSH is investigating how the work environment of haulage truck drivers can be improved. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) notes that, between 1986 and 1995, 60% of the back injuries were to haulage truck drivers in metal/nonmetal surface mining. Personnel from Phelps Dodge suggested that combining acceleration data with information obtained from a GPS could generate results with a variety of uses. Therefore, researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) began investigating how to tie acceleration and GPS data together. It was originally thought that this tool would be used primarily for road and truck maintenance. However, as research progressed, it became apparent that it would also be useful in providing feedback about equipment operations and identifying unusual causes of jolting. Experimental approach Available components that function well by themselves were linked for the purpose of proof of concept. Using a Modular Mining Systems (MMS) product called Vital Signs, SRL researchers took an Aero-Marine Products (AMP) acceleration recorder and hardwired it to MMS Dispatch equipment already installed on a truck. AMP is one of several manufacturers of acceleration recorders frequently used to monitor freight during shipping. MMS Dispatch is used for production accounting and truck dispatching and uses GPS tracking. Through Vital Signs, an analog or digital alarm signal can be recorded. Steve Rhoades, of MMS, wrote unique code that links the Vitals Signs data and GPS location and stores this data in an ASCII log file. SRL researchers installed the equipment in a Caterpillar 793 haul truck. The result was a working prototype. Figures 1 and 2 show the instrument installation in the truck. Several sets of questions and answers on the fundamentals of first aid to the injured, based on the Manual of First-Aid Instruction of the United States Bureau of Mines, are now in use in various parts of the United States. Persons experienced in first-aid instruction believe that a standardized set of questions and answers will assist materially in preparing men for examin- ations conducted by the Bureau for first-aid certificates. Inquiries as to whether a set of standardized questions and answers is available have been made frequently by those training men for the Bureau of Mines examination for certificates. It is believed that the following list of 171 questions and answers com- piled directly from the manual will be useful to company officials and em- ployees who are engaged in cooperative first-aid training to qualify for Bureau of Mines certificates. The list may also be used by field men of the Bureau in training instructors preparatory to a cooperative training campaign and in examining classes or individuals for first-aid certificates. The origin of gaseous hydrocarbons in coal, predominantly methane, can be traced to the natural processes of coalification. The higher rank coals or the more deeply buried seams retain more gas than low rank coals or shallow seams. It is estimated that up to 460,000 cubic feet of all types of gases are produced during the formation of one ton of coal (Cervik, 1969). The chief components of these gaseous products are methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water vapor. Most of these gases escape during the various stages of decomposition but with eventual presence of overlying impermeable beds, there may be as much as 2,000 cubic feet of gas retained per ton of coal. Over geologic time, diffusion and other processes such as geologic disturbances in the earth's crust remove all but 500 to 2000 cubic feet of gas per ton of coal (Cervik, 1969). It is this residual methane which is of primary concern when mine openings are made in coal measures. Extensive data compiled by the United States Bureau of Mines reveal that some coal mines in this country emit up to 20 million cubic feet of methane per day (Spencer, 1970; Irani et al, 1972). Toxic, poisonous and respirable gaseous pollutants and explosive gases, predominantly methane, are injected into the ventilation stream from active sections and gobs. The liberation of methane in gob areas may, under certain circumstances, become extremely large. In some instances it may constitute up to 70 percent of the total yield of gas in a mine. An investigation of the production of iron in the blast furnace is obviously not an easy subject for research . Enough is known of the mechanical , thermal and chemical conditions existing inside the furnace to say certainly that they are complicated. Furnace operators have found that the process is sensitive to a number of known and to many unknown operating conditions . In order to form any conclusions of value , it seems necessary to collect a large amount of data taken with considerable care and accuracy. These facts make a blast furnace research difficult but not impossible . The most serious obstacle in attacking the problem comes from the fact that it is useless in the design and operation of the blast furnace to use the method of " trial and error , which has proved valuable in so many other industrial problems . The variables are so interrelated and are so dependent one on the other that the number of experimental combinations to be tried is enormous . There are certainly not less than twenty factors in furnace operation and design that are known to influence the results . This is apparent if it is remembered that a phrase like " size and shape of the furnace" includes height of the furnace , height , diameter and angle of the bosh , inwall batter , stockline diameter , and furnace volume ; and that a phrase like " chemical and physical properties of the fuels charged " includes size and shape of the lumps , density, porosity and strength of the coke , in addition to its chemical analysis . Let us suppose that we need choose for each of twenty factors one of two values , for example , suppose we must say only that the furnace shall be " tall " or " short , " that the bosh angle shall be " flat " OF "steep , that the ore shall be " coarse " or " fine , " or that the blast has to be "hot" or " cold , " the number of resulting combinations is more than one million . In putting twenty pennies on the table , either heads up or tails up, the number of permutations possible is the twentieth power of two , slightly more than one million. It is obvious , therefore , that some sort of mathematical relationship , a set of rules of thumb , laws , curves or the like , are needed . Whether the relationships , curves or formulas are derived from experiment , from theory, or from mere guess -work, makes no difference provided they agree with the known facts . If they do not agree with known facts , they are worthless no matter what their origin or how weighty the " authority" vouching for them. Few such relationships have appeared in blast- furnace literature , and it may be doubted whether such formulas can be discovered .

This section of the Minerals Yearbook reviews the minerals industries of 29 countries: the 12 nations of the European Community (Belgium, France, the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Denmark/Greenland, Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg, The United Kingdom, and Ireland); 6 of the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Austria, and Switzerland); Malta; the 8 Centrally Planned Economies of Eastern Europe (the German Democratic Republic (GDR), Poland, Yugoslavia, Albania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Bulgaria); and the U.S.S.R. Western Europe Western Europe [loosely defined to include the 12 nations of the European Com-munity (EC) and the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA)] is the single largest trading area and consumer of raw materials in the world. If Western Europe was at one time an important mining sector, it has now increasingly relegated the role of supplying minerals for its minerals processing industry to its ex-colonies in North and South America, Africa, and Australia. In this regard, Western Europe is the most important determinant of raw materials consumption (and thus, indirectly, raw materials production). There is an important reason for this since Western Europe lies somewhere between Japan at one extreme and the United States and the U.S.S.R. at the other extreme as regards the availability of natural resources.

In contrast to the large fund of information available on the carbonizing properties of Eastern U.S. coals, the experimental data available for most Western U.S. and foreign coals are meager. To supply some self-consistent data, the Bureau of Mines conducted 220 low-temperature carbonization assay tests at 500° C. in a laboratory-scale carbonization apparatus. The results are included in this report. The U.S. coals tested are from Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. Assays were also made on coals from Canada, Ecuador, France, Greece, India, Mexico, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Yugoslavia. In addition, one assay of pine sawdust and one assay of a peat from Ireland are reported. Prediction equations were developed relating the yield of products of carbonization obtained at 500° C. in the assay unit to the proximate and ultimate analyses of the coals. The equations for predicting the yields of tar plus light oil, char, and gas, and the heating value of the gas, are considered good, each equation having a multiple correlation coefficient of 0.90 or higher. The equation predicting volume of gas obtained upon carbonization is considered as fair, with a multiple correlation coefficient of 0.84. A reproducibility study of the assay made on 10 replicate samples of a subbituminous coal indicated that the standard deviation of the individual products was 0.31 percent or less.
