This book has employed miners' narratives to illustrate basic concepts about the escape process. One of the most powerful means by which people make sense of their experiences is through the telling and internalization of stories [Bruner 1990]. By couching one's own and others' motives and actions in terms of a coherent narrative, a person is able to learn from mistakes and plan future behaviors that may help ensure survival. A growing body of research suggests that decision-making skills used to deal with emergency situations can be taught and assessed by simulations based on narratives from the real world [Bransford et al. 1986; Brecke 1982; Brener 1984; Connolly et al. 1989; Halff et al. 1986; Jones and Keith 1983; Lacefield and Cole 1986]. Such techniques have been used to address the decision-making of medical personnel, civil and military flight crews, and even people involved in broader life events such as political and military situations [Babbott and Halter 1983; Dugdale et al. 1982; Farrand et al. 1982; Gilbert 1975; McGuire 1985; McGuire et al. 1976; Flathers et al. 1982; Giffin and Rockwell 1984; Jensen 1982; Janis and Mann 1987]. Given the validity of this method of study and the promise it holds for helping people improve the quality of their responses to nonroutine occurrences, it is perhaps surprising that there have been no studies of emergency decision-making among blue-collar workers prior to those conducted by the present authors and their colleagues. The purpose of this chapter is to describe underground coal miners' decision-making performance on a table-top simulation whose problem structure is derived from interviews with a group of eight miners who escaped from the 5 Left section at Brownfield Mine. The exercise was constructed by a panel of domain experts (mine safety and rescue personnel) with the assistance of an educational psychologist. The simulation includes actual predicaments with wise and unwise decision alternatives that, in the opinion of these domain experts, are characteristic of such escapes. Results reported in this chapter are the scores of a sample of experienced mine workers who completed the simulation. Because the exercise is a series of objective performance tasks coupled with detailed and immediate feedback, this simulation can be used to teach and refresh critical escape skills, as well as to provide data concerning the proficiency of miners at the time of exercise administration.

"Conservation of slateWaste slate is a problem of outstanding importance in the slate industry, for a very large proportion of all slate quarried is thrown on the waste heap. While many uses for waste slate have been found, the demand calls for merely a fraction of the present supply of unused material. If the slate industry is to increase in prosperity, the producer's energy must be directed toward the development of ways and means of reducing waste to the lowest possible point. The Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior has devoted much study to this problem and a recent bulletin ** contains a detailed discussion of the waste problem.Attention has recently been directed toward an improved method of cutting slate in quarries, a method that promises to reduce greatly the percentage of waste material. The method has been introduced since that bulletin was published, and this supplementary paper covers the details of the process.A reversion in method,In connection with this new mode of operation history is repeating itself in a very interesting way, for the old quarry bar used years ago with steam drills, and later discarded in favor of the channeling machine .and the hammer drill, has been salvaged from the scrap heap, and again put to active use. METALLURGICAL ACTIVITY in 1963 was again dominated by the insatiate demands of research and development conducted in conjunction with the nation's defense and aerospace programs. An increasing effort was noticeable throughout the year, however, to apply to the commercial field many of the processes and techniques that have been developed by government-sponsored research. Particularly effective has been the Industrial Applications Program of the National Aeronautic and Space Agency through which many of the technological advancements made during the course of NASA research and development have been published and released to the public. POWDER TECHNOLOGY Powder metallurgy techniques for fabricating metals, not long ago declared outmoded because of improved casting and shaping methods, have since made an astonishing comeback. Traditionally mechanical pressing of powder shapes has been employed when melting and casting was difficult or impossible, when phase relationships needed to be sidestepped, or when machining costs could be avoided. Hence, it has long been used for producing relatively small special shapes of high-melting metals and alloys. Small iron parts produced with a punch and die have been common for many years, but powder metallurgy techniques are now applicable to a wide range of materials and items. Hard-to-handle materials including refractory metals and their alloys are now rolled, forged, or extruded from billets made by sintering isostatically compacted powders. The major element of the powder metallurgy industry still comprises iron shapes, however, and two-thirds of the annual 100,000 tons of powder metallurgy products are made of iron. The largest single user of powder-forming techniques is the automobile industry which currently consumes 14,000 to 16,000 tons of iron powder per year. A typical 1963 model auto contained more than 100 pressed powder parts (e.g., transmission gears, timing gears, sprockets, ball joint suspensions) totaling 5 to 7 pounds per car. Analysis of seed numbers present in topsoils (a grazed area, an ungrazed area, and two stockpiles) indicated that seeds of the most prevalent colonizers (e.g., Kochia scoparla, Setaria virdis, and Salsolo collins) were not present in the topsoil upon respreading but rather appeared by immigration from the surrounding areas. The grazed site had a seed density of over 7,700 seeds m-2 (of which 43% were from weedy species) and the ungrazed site had 3,900 seeds m-2 (of which 7% were weeds); the stockpiled topsoils had very low seed densities (255 and 520 seeds m-2). Seed densities and diversity decreased with depth on both the grazed and ungrazed sites; this was especially true on the grazed site where 94% of the seeds were found in the surface 7.5 cm. Several species were present in the seed bank (e.g., Hedeoma hispida, Artemesia ludoviciana, A. frigida, and A, abslnthlum) which were also found on the three and four year old mined sites in the aboveground vegetation survey. Seeds from these species may germinate after several years of dormancy, thereby starting populations on mined sites and enhancing plant diversity. Seed bank analysis was also undertaken on mined sites ranging in age of 2 to 6 years (plus an unmined site). Mined site seed densities ranged from 1630 to 3980 seeds m-2, with the four year old site having the greatest density (largely because of high Melilotus spp. populations); unmined site and stockpiled topsoil sample had lower seed densities. A significant positive correlation between total viable seed content and soil-water saturation percentage indicated that soil texture may influence seed viability/ dormancy (the. finer the material, the higher the seed population). As with the previous part of this study (and other studies), there was a poor correlation between the aboveground flora and the belowground seed composition.

Safety and health professionals from all sectors of industry recognize that training is a critical element of an effective safety and health program. A major concern in the mining industry is how to train both an aging workforce and the expected influx of new miners and mine managers as older workers retire. Thus, a review of some of the basic principles of adult learning may be helpful to mine trainers. This paper discusses the principles of adult learning based on research in education and psychology. It stresses the importance of taking a systems approach to training, focusing on the relationship between the environment and technology, and understanding how workers interact with both. The authors argue that the principles of adult learning and a systems approach are fundamental to the delivery of effective training in the mining industry. Examples of training programs developed by the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are presented within two broad performance domains: routine and nonroutine skills. Basics of curriculum development are also briefly presented to provide the mine trainer with a template for program development.

"There seems to be some confusion between the terms carbon black and lamp black, although in American lampblack is generally understood to be a soot formed by the smudge process. In this process oil, coal tar, resin or some solid, or carbonaceous substance is burned in an insufficient quantity of air, while on the other hand carbon black is a product resulting from the incomplete combustion of gas and is deposited by actual contact of flame upon a metallic surface.The various carbons, such as gas retort coke, oil retort coke, graphite, carbon black, lampblack, vine black, wood-pulp,black, willow charcoal, and blacks made from refuse material such as leather have different characteristics as to flocculence strength of color, and physical structure. These blacks are made by one of the following methods:(1) Formation by direct contact of a flame upon a depositing surface.(2) Production by combustion of an oil, tar, etc., in an inadequate supply of air; the soot is allowed to slowly settle out on the floors and the walls of the collecting chambers.(3) Carbonization of solids and subsequent reduction to a state of small subdivision.(4) Production by heating carbonaceous vapors or gases to a decomposition temperature by external heating with or without air in the forming chamber. This is usually referred to as cracking or thermal decomposition."

The Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the 32,270-hectare Cache Peak study area in 1992; the area had been proposed as wilderness. Bureau personnel examined and sampled prospect workings; 50 rock and placer samples were taken during the investigation. The study area is centered about 25 km southeast of Challis, Idaho, in the Challis National Forest. According to May, 1993, Bureau of Land Management mining claim records there were no current mining claims located inside the study area. Up to 100 claims may have been located in the study area in the past. Gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc: Significant analyses, poor exposure precludes resource estimate. Limestone: More than I billion tonnes may be chemically suitable for a variety of uses, markets too distant to favor mining. Dolomite: More than 1 billion tonnes may be chemically suitable for producing magnesium metal, markets too distant to favor mining. Sand and Gravel: Several million m3, but markets and transportation costs do not favor mining. Chalcedonic nodules: Two localities in the study area may be of interest to hobbyists who cut and polish stone. There is no reported past production from the study area.

Dusts can be filtered out of air streams onto polymer surfaces by electrostatic trapping resulting from the spontaneous transfer of electrons upon contact between dust particles and the polymer surfaces. Such spontaneous contact electrification has been studied quantitatively in this contract with the aid of modern semiconductor charge-sensors with the aim of determining what basic principles govern the sign and magnitude of contact electrification. Information obtained by capacitance-voltage measurements of thin polymer films on silicon showed that charges as large as 4 x 1012 electrons per cm2 develop spontaneously, and that such a charge gives adhesional forces of 165 pounds per square inch (11 atmospheres). Direct measurement of dust polymer contact electrification, using silicon surface channel conductance sensors, also showed spontaneous charges of more than 1012 electrons per cm2. Some polymers can either donate or accept electrons. These included chlorinated polyethylene, chlorinated polypropylene, polyethylmethacrylate, and a copolymer of maleic anhydride with n-octadecylvinylether. Other polymers never accepted electrons but could donate electrons; these included polystyrene, pulychlorostyrune, polyvinylchloride, polyvinylacetate, a polycarbonate (Lexan), and cellulose tributyrate. Contact electrification studies were made with dusts (coal dust, a channel black, or a silica powder) contacting thin films of various polymers solvent-cast onto the semiconductor charge-sensor. Sometimes charging was instantaneous and sometimes slower, but in all but one case (coal dust on a copolymer of maleic anhydride with n-octadecylvinyl ether) the charge trunsfer was a donation of electrons by the polymer to the dust. The objective of this program was to develop nozzle designs to maximize the effective cutting length of a water jet. The results of the theoretical program directly support the Bureau of Mines Borehole Mining Program and their experimental program to improve the rock cutting capability of water jets. The borehole geometry requires turning the flow by 90 degrees and accelerating through the nozzle within a restricted length. Several suggestions for turning the flow are offered. The borehole space limitations constrain nozzle length, to the extent that a standard 13-degree tapered nozzle (6-1/2 degrees half angle) is too long to fit in the borehole, at production flow conditions. The design technique developed is computationally economical and enables examination of a large number of shapes and flow conditions. The nozzle design is based on design criteria of minimization of boundary layer thickness at the nozzle exit and minimization of the possibility of separation and cavitation. Six flow conditions, including pressures to 4500 psi and flow rates to 400 gpm, were examined, Best shapes were determined for all flow conditions. The best shape for a borehole reining application consists of an initial 4th degree polynominal (quartic) at the entrance followed by a straight section with a twenty degree (half-angle) taper at the exit.

Spark-source mass spectrometry has been used to determine the amounts of minor and trace elements in coal particles of various sizes, including the respirable range (<5 microns). Fifty-six elements ranging in concentration from 0.1 ppm wt to 5,000 ppm wt have been determined. The investigation of coal and coal ash has shown that the organic material in coal does not interfere with the spark-source determination of the various elements.

Minimize the effects of underground mine conveyor belt fires by developing methods to prevent automatic fire suppression system failures. The Problem Fire protection is achieved by prevention, early detection, and planned fire-fighting response. Automatic fire suppression systems are one form of planned fire-fighting response. When these systems are properly designed, installed, and maintained they can effectively control fires. Conveyor belt fires account for about 20% of underground coal mine fires. Fire protection requirements have been established for underground locations because of potential for start and spread of fire and the restricted personnel egress in a fire situation. Belt conveyor systems arc potentially dangerous because of the high fire incidence rate, high temperatures, dense smoke, toxic gases, and rapid flame-spread rate. While investigating the conveyor fire suppression problem, the Bureau identified automatic fire suppression system reliability as a potentially serious deficiency within the mining industry. Table 1 lists common failure modes fur three Fire suppression system types. This table summarizes findings of Mine Safety and Health Administration electrical inspectors responsible for inspection of belt protection automatic fire suppression systems. Batteries, contact points, control wires, and electric servocontrols are all prone to failure. Figure 1 shows rock-dust-contaminated relay contact points. This condition is dangerous because of the chance of intermittent failures, which might allow systems to pass annual functional testing, yet fail during actual fire emergencies.

Reduce the respirable dust exposure of the roof-bolter operator when downwind of the continuous miner, particularly in mines where respirable dust standards are more stringent because of silica in the respirable dust. Dust Sources If roof-bolter dust levels are excessive, the bolter dust collector should first be checked to ensure that it is operating properly. (Technology News No. 219 provides information on how to spot and repair bolter dust collector problems). If the roof-bolter dust collector is operating properly and dust levels are still excessive, then the source is most likely a continuous mining machine operating upwind. In many sections, the roof-bolter operator must work on the return side of the continuous miner during part of the production cycle. For the proper control of gasoline treating plants there is need of a quick test for corrosion. In "sweetening" gasoline that is, in treating it to remove evil smelling mercaptans or to convert them to disulphides or sulphides the sodium plumbite ("doctor") method is generally used. This method involves agitation of the gasoline with "doctor solution&apos;s (sodium plumbite made by dissolving litharge in a solution of caustic soda) in the presence of free sulphur3. One of the common mistakes in the technique of this process is the addition of too much free sulphur, which will dissolve in the gasoline and cause it to be corrosive. In the operation of a continuous sweetening; or treating plant, a check on the corrosiveness of they product is imperative at all times. The copper-strip test commonly used in specifications take, so long to perform that the plant may fail to function properly for some time before the operator discovers it. The writer has investigated a rapid corrosion test method involving the use of metallic mercury, recently developed by Messrs. G. T. Granger, refinery superintendent, and A. B. Comstock, chief chemist, of the Barnsdall Refineries, Inc., Okmulgee, Okla. They have used this test successfully for several months in controlling the operation of their continuous treaters any have come to the conclusion that it has several advantages over the copper-strip test. Chief among these is the time caved, as the copper-strip test takes at least one-half hour, while the mercury test can be wade in about five minutes. It is very evident that this is an important item in controlling a continuous treater.

Sphalerite concentrates prepared during processing of Missouri lead ores contain small percentages of cobalt and nickel which adversely affect zinc electrolysis. The Bureau of Mines has evaluated solvent extraction and precipitation techniques to remove and recover cobalt and nickel from zinc sulfate solution prior to zinc electrolysis. Prepared zinc sulfate solutions containing about 190 gpl of zinc and 50 ppm of both cobalt and nickel were treated using various combinations of complexing reagents, solvent, pH, concentration, time, and temperature. The following complexing reagents gave the best results: a-nitroso-ß-naphthol, ß-nitroso-a-naphthol, 1,2 cyclohexane dione dioxime (nioxime), di-2-pyridyl ketone oxime, and dimethylglyoxime. These reagents in suitable solvents lowered the cobalt and nickel levels to <0.1 ppm. Stripping the complexed reagents from the solvents was not possible except for nioxime. Direct addition of the appropriate reagent to the prepared zinc sulfate solution resulted in the precipitation of cobalt and nickel. Several possible flowsheets are presented for the removal and recovery of cobalt and nickel. Good zinc deposits were successfully electrowon from zinc sulfate solutions purified by solvent extraction and precipitation.

This report deals with the efforts to develop a portable device suitable for underground use for the purpose of measuring the frequency of vibration of the horizontal chords of Birmingham roof trusses. Four devices are investigated and evaluated. An approximate emperical expression developed from a mathematical analysis provides a means of converting the frequency into tension. The method appears to be effective in mines with shale roof but requires some modification for other roofs.

This study was conducted to provide experimental evidence on the effect of modifications of gasoline front-end composition on the photochemical specific reactivities of automotive emissions. Evaporative and evaporative-plus-exhaust emissions from an automobile operated with four fuels of different volatility and varying levels of C.-C5 olefins were irradiated in a 10040 environmental chamber at three sets of initial hydrocarbon-nitrogen oxides concentrations. Reactivity was measured and expressed in terms of rate-of-NO2 formation and dosages of oxidant, peroxyacetyl nitrate, and formaldehyde. The compositional changes that were necessary in reducing fuel volatility were found to have no significant effect on the reactivity of the emissions. However, replacing C4-C5 olefins with saturated components resulted in sharp decreases in all reactivity manifestations observed for the evaporative emission samples. A lesser influence (of C4-C5 olefin replacement) was found with the composite exhaust-plus-evaporative samples; the effect that was observed could be attributed to the evaporative emission portion of the sample. The data therefore suggest that saturation of front-end fuel olefins had no large effect on exhaust emission reactivity.

A specially recommended cable is a rubber-sheathed cable that has met the minimum performance requirements for cables as set forth in Schedule 20. The first in the series of recommended cables was listed September, 1930, by an ad- vance notice published as Information Circular 6375 which described the conditions under which the cable tests were made. Since that time six additional cables have met the test re- quirements and have been specially recommended. The cables listed were all twin (parallel duplex) cables having outer belts or cov- erings of approximately -inch high-grade rubber compound, and have the same general appear- ance and relative dimensions as the types of twin cables in general use. The cables were tested under conditions designed to show their approximate perform- ance under mine conditions. Only twin-type cables have met these test conditions. Although the recommended trailing cables are much better and safer for mine use than other cables and withstand being run over by a 7-ton car, they should not be considered as 100 per cent safe. The 7-ton car test represents the minimum limit requirement effective at present under Schedule 2-C, but the test car operates on a straight and level track, and thus does not represent the more severe conditions of mine use such as might result from uneven and curved tracks.

Phase I study efforts addressed: 1) acid mine drainage formation theory; 2) effects of inundation in reducing acid mine drainage formation; 3) summary information on the types of acid abatement technology currently available and the problems inherent in each; 4) analysis of two potential means of partially inundating abandoned segments of active underground mines to reduce acid formation. This subsequent Phase II Draft Final Report addresses all of the above, but concentrates on and defines Item 4. Seal construction techniques were taken through five logical steps as follows: A) Location Analysis; B) Coal Barrier Pillar Analysis: C) Ground Water Analysis; D) Design Considerations: E) Economic Analysis. The design details of both low wall dams and section seals were discussed in a series of segments: a) Case Histories; b) Feasibility Analysis; and c) Design (including representative calculations). Study efforts showed that both concepts are feasible only in certain mines where the geologic-hydrologic physical makeup is suitable to contain a mine pool. Low wall dams in particular were found to have extremely limited applicability as a means of pollution reduction. Section seals, while clearly dependent upon site specific conditions, have a some what broader range of utility and are more effective in pollution reduction. The proven dramatic reduction in acid mine drainage attributable to inundation makes this a concept that must be considered.

The investment involved in any communication system represents a considerable sum. Even though it is desirable that the system work properly each and every time it is called into use, some failures are bound to occur. Most failures, however, and especially those that occur most frequently, are due to poor installation techniques. An extra hour spent at an installation site can save many maintenance trips and many frustrating hours of system troubleshooting. Typical faults likely to cause communication outrage are Pager phone systems Poor splices aggravated by corrosion. Strain relief not provided. Drip loop not provided. Incorrect branch connections. Overloading the circuit. Poor battery connections. Improper wire size or type. Lightning strikes. Improper placement of wire runs. Carrier phones Mounting transceiver near load resistors or other sources of heat. Tracks not electrically bonded. Cable abrasion due to poor mounting location. Disconnected battery. Poor mechanical installation. Each installation should be well planned. After an installation is completed, the technician should ask the question, "What can go wrong with this unit or line?" Remember the adage, "Whatever can go wrong, will." Preventive measures taken during installation will pay off in the long run. 6.2 Pager Phone Installation The pager phones used in many underground coal mines are battery-operated, party-line telephones with provisions for loudspeaker paging. The system is usually two-wire, nonpolarized, and operated by self-contained batteries. Many of the individual units are certified as permissible. 6.2.1 Mounting Pager phones are designed to be mounted on an upright support at the desired location. For convenience, the phone should be mounted 5 feet above the floor where there is no obstruction to using the handset or removing the cabinet front cover for servicing or battery replacement. In low-coal situations, a suitable height for installation should be selected convenient to the normal operator&apos;s position at the site selected. About 12 inches of free space on each side of the phone should be provided for cabinet access. The phone should be protected against direct exposure to dripping water and should not be allowed to rest in a puddle of water. The mounting location should be convenient to a work location and have a safe, unobstructed area for a worker to stand and use the phone. The phone must be in a location where the worker will not be in the path of moving vehicles or falling debris. Each telephone is normally well insulated, but it is still good practice to provide an insulating mat or dry planking for the user to stand on.
