This report has presented a literature review of explosion proof¬ing of coal mine electrical equipment. The international "state-of¬the-art" is an extremely difficult definition to quantify but, from the preceding paragraphs, it is evident the international community be¬lieves that it is represented by the International Electrotechnical Commission's Publications. Five questions were set forth during the beginning of this report. Each will be evaluated in light of the preceding discussion. 1. Can Schedule 2G specifications on explosion-proof containers be substantiated? Literature was found in the three main problem areas, surface temperature, mechanical strength, and explosion transmission, to determine this. Surface temperature requirements are adequate except for equipment that can normally overload, and the required intern¬al pressure does afford some margin of safety. However, in terms of safety, gap dimensions are about ten times smaller than that needed. 2. Is it possible to replace the Schedule's design requirements with performance specifications? Two primary areas were determined as mechanical strength and explosion transmission. As was mentioned, for present flange and gap standards, the 150 psig requirement is adequate. Furthermore, it is the authors' opinion that the level cannot be re¬duced if the present gap requirements are retained. The Schedule now requires that 16 tests be run, but the literature suggests that only from three to six examinations are necessary. "INTRODUCTION In accordance with the outline of investigation described in a previous report 5 of the Bureau of Mines dealing with the use of acrolein for detecting leakage of methyl chloride from unit--type refrigerating systems, the work has been extended to include an investigation of its use in a multiple system, This report gives the results of analysis of samples of the gas from representative units of a multiple system charged with methyl chloride containing approximately 0.9 per cent acrolein by volume, The results furnish a basis for estimating the Warning that would be given in event of leakage. The properties and warning intensity of acrolein have been described in a previous report. 5 ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThis investigation was made at the combined request-of Several Inc., Manufacturers of refrigerating, appliances, and the Roeasler Hasslacher Chemical Co., manufacturers of methyl chloride. Productivity in underground metal and nonmetal mines is contingent upon work methods, mine layout, and ore handling techniques. One of the most important factors impacting productivity is the efficient movement of men, materials and supplies from the surface into and throughout the mine. Various transportation systems such as man-trains, service shafts, rubber-tired diesel equipment, etc. are currently used to transport men and supplies in underground mines. In many underground mines, it is not uncommon for a worker to spend 25% of his eight-hour working day traveling from the surface to his work area and returning to the surface.

Iron ore deposits in south-central Missouri have emerged as a possible resource for the rare-earth elements. The Pea Ridge Iron Mine is one such deposit. Rare-earth minerals at the Pea Ridge Iron Mine are contained in breccia pipes consisting primarily of silicon oxides and feldspars. These pipes extend up through the magnetite ore body and appear to be alterations and replacement of earlier hematite. The mineralogy of these pipes is very complex and varied, which could complicate the concentration and extraction of the rare-earth minerals. This U.S. Bureau of Mines !eport represents a study by characterization of the mineral phases to assess the amenability and development of concentration and extraction techniques. Previous characterization of rare-earth minerals has been mainly by transmitted light microscopy. This method along with reflected light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction was used to identify and characterize the rare-earth and associated minerals. The minerals identified were the major ore minerals, magnetite and hematite; the rare-earth phosphates, monazite and xenotime; the rare-earth silicate, allanite; the minor associated minerals, cassiterite, pyrite, and apatite; and the gangue minerals, feldspar, quartz, and actinolite.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines collected and analyzed over core measurements and other indicators of in situ stress characteristics at the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. An analysis of these data revealed that significant local variations in in situ stress are present in this mine and that these variations existed prior to mining. High stresses were found to be associated with the most competent strata and a locked section of a fault. An estimate of the predominant stress field was developed for mine-wide modeling. The estimate shows that the greatest principal stress was oriented north of northwest. This information should provide a basis for mine-wide structural modeling of the Lucky Friday Mine and should generate important insights into localized stress conditions, which may significantly affect both local and mine-to-mine variations in seismicity induced by excavation.

An investigation was conducted of the use of a mechanical rock splitter as the primary means for rock fragmentation in underground hard rock mining systems. Analyses and scale model tests showed that reasonably sized splitters that could be mounted on the booms of conventional drill jumbos were capable of fragmenting over a ton of rock per cycle. Detailed drill-split mining systems were developed for entry development, room and pillar, bench mining, and cut and fill mining. Economic analyses of these systems showed them to be generally competitive with conventional drill-blast methods. Except for bench mining, drill-split offered substantial cost savings over drill-blast. The investigation also included a technical evaluation of the mechanical splitter, an analysis of health and safety, and a determination of the potential applicability of drilling and splitting.

This research project had two main objectives: (1) To identify the smoke limits of gaseous fuel-air mixtures and (2) to obtain and evaluate basic chemical information on the formation of smoke in very rich flames near the smoke limit. Such information would do much to establish the circumstances for car-bon deposition in gas appliances and in other types of combustors. Based on tests with ethylene and propane, these studies showed the following: 1. Smoke limits are related to the yellow-tip limits of the fuel. Previous research established sufficient data to permit prediction of yellow-tip limits on gas burners using a wide variety of fuels. The present study of smoke limits deals only with ethylene-air flames, but the concept that was developed is probably applicable to other fuels.

The limits of flammability and minimum autoignition temperature of a fuel are important elements in assessing fire and explosion hazards that may exist when using or handling the fuel. The limits of flammability define the range of compositions of the fuel gas or vapor mixed with an oxidant through which a flame, initiated by an outside energy source such as an electrical spark, can propagate. The minimum autoignition temperature (M.A.I.T.) is the lowest temperature at which the fuel vapors ignite spontaneously in a specified medium; in this case the ignition energy is supplied by the heat content of tae environment. This temperature is also referred to as S.I.T. value by some authors. Because the autoignition of a fuel also depends on the time interval during which the fuel is subjected to heat, ignition delays are significant. Ignition delay is defined here as the total time elapsed between the introduction of the liquid fuel into the oxidizing atmosphere and the appearance of a flame. This time interval includes both the physical and chemical processes leading to ignition. The ignition delay is usually maximum at the M.A.I.T, and decreases as the temperature of the system is increased. The flash point and the fire point are also useful in assessing the fire and explosion hazards of a fuel. The flash point is the lowest temperature at which saturated, flammable fuel vapor-air mixtures are formed at atmospheric pressure and, therefore, it is essentially the lower limit of flammability

Promote safer and more efficient mine operations by providing communications between personnel located anywhere in the mine. Approach A radio communications system was designed which takes advantage of existing mine wiring such as telephone lines or electric power cables. The existing wiring distributes radio signals throughout the mine, making communications possible between roving miners, vehicle operators, dispatchers, and other personnel. How It Works Research has shown that medium frequency (MF) signals (300 KHZ-3 MHZ) can couple onto and re-radiate from nearby conductors. This effect is known as parasitic coupling and re-radiation. In a mine, these conductors include electric power cables, control lines, telephone lines, trolley lines, as well as metal water and air pipes Since all underground mines require these conductors for normal operations, the necessary network already exists and expands automatically as the mine is developed. A radio communication system has been developed that uses the parasitic coupling and re-radiation characteristic of MF. Using this system, whole mine radio coverage can be achieved without the need to install or maintain communication lines. The system consists of mobile transceivers for roving personnel and vehicles, and fixed-location base radio stations and repeaters.

Historically, the surface subsidence over underground coal mines has been predicted using empirical profile or influence functions which have little or no connection to the actual mechanics of the subsidence- Without a mechanistic basis, establishing the exact site-specific parameters to use in these empirical methods has been problematic. A practical subsidence predictive method based on mechanics has the appealing capability of allowing the determination of site-specific parameters from fundamental properties of the overburden with minimal field calibration work. This paper presents a case study where a mechanics-based, boundary-element program is used to calculate the surface subsidence associated with several panels of a Northern Appalachian longwall coal mine. The program used in this case study is called LAMODEL, and it incorporates a frictionless, laminated overburden into a general purpose displacement-discontinuity code primarily designed for calculating the stresses and displacements in coal mines or other thin seam or vein type deposits. In this paper. the program is used to calculate both the underground convergence and the resulting surface subsidence at three longwalls. The subsidence results from the model are compared with field measurements and analyzed The results from the case study in this paper demonstrate that the laminated model with calibrated properties can easily provide fairly accurate subsidence predictions and is fairly flexible for fitting measured subsidence. However, additional subsidence predictive case studies are recommended in order to ultimately evaluate the potential of the laminated overburden model for practical subsidence prediction

"The Union Copper mine is in the Gold Hill district, Rowan and Cabarrus Counties, N. C.The mine was discovered in 1799 and first worked as a gold mine; but copper was encountered at depth, and the property became an important producer of copper. It is estimated that the mine produced 5,000,000 pounds of copper before operations were discontinued in 1907.As part of the strategic minerals program, the Bureau of Mines conducted a development project on the property from July 1943 to November 1943. Eight diamond-drill holes, totaling 2,500 linear feet, were drilled to delineate the ore body. Analyses of 205 core samples were made.Tabulations of sample analyses and drill-hole logs are presented in this report.The project work embodied in this report was under the immediate supervision of Austin B. Clayton, project engineer, and the general supervision of H. B. Ewoldt, district engineer for North Carolina and Tennessee. The preliminary report, written by Austin B. Clayton, was revised and the various figures redrawn for publication by T. J. Ballard under the general supervision of M. H. Kline, chief, Raleigh Branch, Mining Division.Acknowledgment is due the Metallurgical Branch for analytical determinations of the samples.The mine property is 1.5 miles southwest of the village of Gold. The upper parts of the veins in the district were first worked for gold; however, the increase in the sulfide content of the veins with depth rendered the amalgamation process for gold recovery ineffective, and the mines were closed.The period of greatest activity at the Union Copper mine was from 1899 to 1906. At an earlier period the oxidized and leached part of the lode near the surface was mined from a working known as the ""big cut,"" the reported yield of which was $300,000 in gold.3/ The mine has not been operated since 1907.J. T. Pardee3/ lists the probable value of the production of the Union Copper mine as $1,050,000, of which about $675,000 was the value of some 5,000,000 pounds of copper produced."

This report on properties of commercial motor fuels is the twelfth in a series made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first report contained data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The -present report, covering the summer of 1941, presents analytical data for 1,857 samples, representing the products of approximately 135 companies. -As in previous surveys, these companies include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted, and these data are published exactly as they were received. Conforming to previous surveys, the data cover three groups of samples -- regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines -- and each group has been aver aged separately. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, are as follows: Regular price, 1,010 samples, 291 items, and 86 brands; premium price, 577 samples, 263 items, and 78 brands; third-grade gasoline, 270 samples 159 items, and 74 brands. The meanings of these terms as used in the surveys are as follows: Sample: The individual supply of gasoline obtained at the filling station and analyzed in the laboratory.

Provide ear protection which allows normal, unaltered hearing at low noise levels, yet protects the wearer from excessive noise. The Approach: A commercial earmuff with integral speakers has been adapted with a special amplifier so that low sound levels are not affected, but higher noise levels automatically reduced. How It Works: The discriminating earmuff developed by the Bureau of Mines has two modes of operation. In the first mode, where input sound levels are less than or equal to 83 decibels, the wearer will perceive noise at its actual level. For inputs in excess of 83 decibels, the second mode of operation begins and the sound perceived by the wearer is progressively attenuated, or reduced, as the input level is increased. A recognizable difference still exists between two adjacent sound levels enabling the wearer to differentiate between them.

4.1 Introduction Using methods outlined in previous sections of this report, programs were written and/or obtained to: i) select best combinations of "a" and "k" for up to 8 different value parameters, ii) calculate available and unavailable ore tonnages and other statistics, and iii) produce contour maps of various parameter characteristics and available tonnages on a line printer. All the above programs are written in Fortran IV for execu¬tion on IBM 360/370 computers. 4.2 Calculation of Coal Reserves The Ore Reserve program suite consists of the following sections: (a) UNIT 1: This unit is a subroutine called by Unit 2 to determine values for "a" and "k" from the given data. (b) UNIT 2: These programs calculate ore reserves and are composed of a main program and several sub¬routines. This chapter includes tables from 1984 that were not available in time for publication of the 1984 Minerals Yearbook, but does not include corresponding tables for 1985. The value of raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1985 was estimated at $23.2 billion, an increase of $0.07 billion over the value for 1984. This is the third consecutive year that the value has increased, and except for a decrease in 1982, the value for each year has increased since 1971, or 13 out of 14 years. However. while the value of industrial minerals production continued to grow, reflecting the growth of the domestic economy, the value of metal mine production decreased in 1985 by 6%. This drop was more than offset by a 3% increase in the value of industrial minerals production because the value of industrial minerals produced was more than three times larger than the value of metals. The decrease makes 1986 the third year in the past 5 years in which a drop in the value of metal mining production occurred in the United States where production continued to lag behind growing world production. Domestic production of such major commodities 88 aluminum, copper, iron ore, phosphate rock, and zinc continued to decline owing to a number of international and domestic factors. Gold continued to be the most active commodity in the domestic metal mining industry. Despite lower prices, gold output increased to 2.5 million troy ounces, a 19% increase over that of 1984. The estimated annual production capacity of new gold mines beginning production exceeded 1 million ounces.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a passive encoder for range knobs, a device that automates the task of obtaining the range settings from devices or instruments to be input to microcomputers. It is easily constructed and installed and will not disrupt the device to which it is being attached. It consists of a custom knob and a small printed circuit board that has light-emitting diodes and magnetic reed switches attached. A ribbon cable connects it to a microcomputer. This encoder eliminates one source of human error in an automated process.

Longwall mining alters the fluid-flow-related reservoir properties of the rocks overlying and underlying an extracted panel due to fracturing and relaxation of the strata. These mining-related disturbances create new pressure depletion zones and new flow paths for gas migration and may cause unexpected or uncontrolled migration of gas into the underground workplace. One common technique to control methane emissions in longwall mines is to drill vertical gob gas vent holes into each longwall panel to capture the methane within the overlying fractured strata before it enters the work environment. Thus, it is important to optimize the well parameters, e.g., the borehole diameter, and the length and position of the slotted casing interval relative to the fractured gas-bearing zones. This paper presents the development and results of a comprehensive, "dynamic," three-dimensional reservoir model of a typical multipanel Pittsburgh coalbed longwall mine. The alteration of permeability fields in and above the panels as a result of the mining- induced disturbances has been estimated from mechanical modeling of the overlying rock mass. Model calibration was performed through history matching the gas production from gob gas ventholes in the study area. Results presented in this paper include a simulation of gas flow patterns from the gas-bearing zones in the overlying strata to the mine environment, as well as the influence of completion practices on optimizing gas production from gob gas ventholes.

Enable mine personnel to determine the effectiveness of and to optimize the mine fire stench warning system without resorting to costly trial and error fire drills. Approach The mine fire stench warning system is used by underground metal/nonmetal mines to warn mine workers of a fire or other emergency. Stench is released directly into the mine ventilation and/or compressed air lines, and its repulsive odor warns miners to evacuate the mine or to follow other established emergency procedures. Unfortunately, since most deep metal mines have complex ventilation systems, some areas of the mine may receive nauseatingly high concentrations of stench while other areas, in more remote locations, may receive no warning or greatly delayed warring at best. The Bureau of Mines, through research, endeavored to solve this problem with a computer modeling system designed to calculate the distribution of odorant by the stench warning system.
