According to the Bureau of Mines annual survey, there were 319 petroleum refineries in the United States as of January 1, 1957 capable of processing 9,123,674 [ ]-barrels of crude oil daily. This was the first time in eleven years that the total number of refineries increased. The crude throughput capacity of the refineries increased 491,284 barrels daily (6 percent) above the January 1, 1956 capacity. The East Coast and Texas Gulf Coast refining districts accounted for 60 percent of the additional capacity installed. Three new refineries were put into operation on the East Coast during the year with a total daily crude throughput capacity of 154,434 barrels while the other refineries in the district report a net loss in capacity, installing equipment capable of processing 140,000 barrels, but dismantling equipment with a capacity of 150,100 barrels. In the Texas Gulf Coast district, one new refinery with a daily crude oil capacity of 5,000 barrels was placed in operation in 1956 and 143,700 barrels of crude capacity was added to existing refineries. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased from 27,145 barrels daily to 28,601 barrels in 1956.

Seven degasification wells have been completed in the Pittsburgh coalbed at the new Emerald mine near Waynesburg, Pa. Funding was provided by the Bureau of Mines to perform stimulation treatments on five of the wells, to show that this is a feasible and economical means of degasifying part of a coalbed. The seven wells ranged in depth from 590 to 910 feet. Stimulation treatments used 25,260 to 42,660 gallons of foam and 7,400 to 12,800 pounds of 20/40-mesh prop sand. Pumping rates were 10.8 to 11.6 bbl/min and treating pressures were from 1,050 to 1,600 psig. On the day following stimulation, gas production ranged from a few hundred cubic feet per day to more than 100,000 cu ft/day.

The principal official test performed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the permissibility of coal-mine explosives, commonly referred to as the gallery test, has been in use at the Bruceton station for many years (2, 16).4/ In this test the explosive under study is loaded into the borehole of a steel cannon and fired into a flammable mixture of natural gas and air or natural gas, air, and coal dust. To meet the requirements for permissibility, the explosive must not ignite the gas mixture under the conditions of the test. There is little doubt that these tests have succeeded in the main objective, namely, to screen the relatively safe from the relatively hazardous explosives. It has been generally conceded that adoption of permissible explosives by the coal-mining industry in the United States has substantially reduced the frequency of disastrous underground explosions caused by blasting. In recent years, however, research workers planning programs for improving the safety of coal-mine explosives have felt the growing need of a more quantitative method for measuring the incendivity of explosives based on a better understanding of the role of the important variables in the gallery tests, Accordingly, it was decided to apply certain statistical methods and techniques to the gallery test to develop it into a more precise tool for evaluating permissible explosives. One of the first and more important methods applied for this purpose was the up-and-down technique (6,7,17), It was demonstrated (14,15) that the weight of the explosive charge directly affects the ignition probability of the natural gas-air atmosphere and that the curve of ignition probability versus charge weight is a cumulative normal curve. Following these experiments, a program, still in progress, was set up to study how the addition of sodium chloride to various permissible-type ex-plosives affects their incendivity. This program resulted in 3,294 shots,

The Thousand Lakes Wilderness has no known economically significant mineral resources. However, the geologic setting of the Wilderness indicates a potential for the discovery of geothermal resources. INTRODUCTION The Thousand Lakes Wilderness occupies 16,335 acres (6,611 ha) in eastern Shasta County, California. A mineral resource study of the area was authorized by the Wilderness Act of 1964 (Public Law 88-577). Mining records and published information were examined, and field investigations conducted in 1979. The Wilderness is about 50 miles (80 km) east of Redding and 12 miles (19 km) south of Burney, California. It lies in the Cascade Range of California. Relief is more than 3,000 feet (910 m); elevation is greatest at the summit of Crater Peak, 8,677 feet (2,645 m).

When the finely bedded shale frequently encountered over coal seams experiences a separation, the material below the separation must behave like a beam or plate in that it must resist both bending and shear. Be-cause of the weakness in interlaminar shear inherent in such strata, shear deflections that are usually ignored in isotropic beam theory may account for a significant part of the total roof sag. Similarly, when a roof truss is installed in such a roof the upward displacement reducing the sag will have components due to shear as well as bending. Questions asked by mine operators about the installation of roof trusses frequently deal with optimum position, slope, and initial tension of the inclined chords. This Bureau of Mines report examines the effects of those chord parameters on the strain energy of both shear and bending and offers optimum values that will minimize the total strain energy of the immediate roof. Design charts are provided, several design examples are included, and the results are compared with current practice. The effects of in situ stresses are investigated and are shown to be equivalent to an additional load on the beam.

A continued rise in construction activity in 1941 forecasts further increases in the demand for building materials of mineral origin, Recent studies by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, reveal that sales of mine and quarry products and their derivatives as a class have followed the long-term trend of construction activity in the past and are benefiting now by the upswing in all types of building. At present most building materials of mineral origin are holding their own in the competitive arena. A few are slipping behind, but others have forged fax ahead. Prominent among those that have surpassed general construction activity since 1925 are sand, gravel, and crushed stone (used in concrete and road metal and railroad ballast) and cement. Both building stone and roofing slate have followed the building curve closely, although in the last few years sales of roofing slate have risen above the curve and sales of building stone have dropped below it. Clay products and building lime, on the other hand, have lagged behind the general procession. Gypsum sales likewise dropped behind, but during the last few years, this industry, thanks to the wider acceptance of its newer products, has staged a marked recovery so that it now stands in about the same relation to total construction activity as it did is 1927-25.

This survey report, the first for this type of fuel, is issued to provide information on the characteristics of the burner-fuel oils now manufactured for sale. Reports of surveys of diesel fuel, conducted under a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Deportment of the Interior, have been published annually since 1950.2/ This survey of burner-fuel oils is similar to the diesel-fuel surveys In pattern and has been conducted under an extension of the same agreement at the request of the Oil-Heat Institute of America and the petroleum industry. It is not intended to conflict with the diesel-fuel survey but rather to supplement it. Burner-fuel oils, also specifically referred to as heating oil, range oil, furnace oil, "Bunker C," and fuel oil, are sold in increasing volumes for use in this country and for export. Sales of all grades of fuel oil in the United States have increased from 340 million barrels in 1926Y to over a billion barrels per year. 4/ Distillate fuel oil sales, in proportion to total fuel-oil volume sold, increased from 42 percent in 1950 to 50 percent in 1954. To ensure the stability ofa tailings pond embankment, the height of the phreatic surface must be kept at or below a safe level. In this investigation, the Bureau of Mines analyzed various horizontal drain designs for tailings embankments to determine their effects on location of the phreatic surface. This report describes the investigation, and it includes 21 dimensionless graphs that can be used to estimate the drain spacing and length dimensions necessary to ensure the stability of embankments of various configurations. Analyses were based on the use of two computer codes, a three-dimensional finite-element code and a two-dimensional finite-difference code. The computer-generated results were compared with results obtained from a laboratory embankment model, other laboratory test results, and piezomet-ric data from two actual tailings embankments. Nearly the same phreatic surface locations were predicted using either of the computer codes. For one of the actual embankments studied, the predicted phreatic surface location was slightly higher than the measured location; for the other, the predicted location closely followed the actual surface trend. Phreatic surfaces of the laboratory model were slightly higher than the code-gener-ated locations, and the differences grew larger as drain length increased or drain spacing decreased.

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating coal mine, Itmann No. 3 Mine, located near Mullens, West Virginia. The electromagnetic environment created by 250-volt-dc and 550-and 950-volt-ac machinery in two longwall panels was measured and is reported. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief time periods. It is recorded using broadband analog magnetic tape, and the noise data is later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise amplitudes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of time to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific, measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots.

"Boiling respirable quartz dust in water for 10 to 40 minutes decreases the cytotoxicity for both erythrocyte hemolytic potential and pulmonary macrophage release of lactate dehydrogenase in vitro. The potential is reduced to near zero in the boiling concentration range of 1 to 10 mg quartz per ml water in boiling times of 20 to 40 minutes. Below this range the detoxification occurs over a longer boiling time. Above this range the hemolytic potential remaining after 40 minutes of boiling approaches native quartz potential with increasing concentration up to 30 mg quartz per ml water. Replacing the media with fresh at the midpoint of boiling results in full detoxification through 20 mg per ml. Pre—boiling the medium with quartz or silica gel reduces the effect of subsequently boiling test samples. Detoxification persists after mild drying at 110 C for 8 hours, and persists after three days of resuspension in water at room temperature. Additional data on persistence of the effect, on the use of acidic and basic media treatment, and on surface analyses are presented, with a discussion of a working hypothesis and research needs.IntroductionResearch underway to determine interactions of quarts and other mineral dust surfaces with pulmonary fluids and alveolar macrophages in culture led to the observation that when dusts were autoclaved in aqueous suspension, their cytotoxic effects on macrophages wore suppressed, in some cases fully and even after several days incubation with the cells. This finding was in direct contradiction to earlier results from both short term macrophage lysosaal enzyme release assays, as well as longer term cytotoxicity assays from macrophages in culture; in those studies, dusts were steam autoclaved at 121 121 ºC with no liquid water but with steam present. (1,2) However detoxification under boiling conditions has been reported in other research.(3). It was decided to use the hemolysis assay to further investigate these findings, because of its sensitivity, simplicity and cost."

This report describes development of the fusion-leach crystallization precipitation process for producing a hafnium content feed material for hafnium-zirconium separation plants. Mixtures of zircon, potassium silicofluoride, and potassium carbonate (or potassium chloride) were fused to prepare soluble potassium zirconium hexafluoride-potassium hafnium hexafluoride salts. High extraction of these salts was obtained by countercurrent leaching the fused material in dilute hydrofluoric acid. About one-half of the hafnium was recovered in hafnium-enriched mother liquor by cooling clarified lead: liquor to crystallize most of the zirconium salt. Additional hafnium was recovered from the primary crystals in a multiple dissolution-recrystallization step. Hafnium-enriched oxides having a hafnium-zirconium ratio of more than three times that of zircon were precipitated from the combined mother liquors. The hafnium and zirconium recoveries in the precipitate were 83 and 24 percent, respectively. About 71 percent of the zirconium and the remainder of the hafnium were recovered in potassium zirconium hexafluoride crystals of low-hafnium content.

Preliminary results are given of solvent stimulation of two wells producing viscous oil (14°-17° API) from the Tar zone in the Wilmington field, California. The solvent (coker oil, an intermediate refinery product) was injected into the formation, and after a soak period, the well was returned to production. Data are given on crude oil properties, solvent properties, determination of volume of solvent in the produced oil, rate of oil production before and after stimulation, volume of additional oil produced, and volume of solvent recovered. Although further study and improvement of the method arcs needed, cyclic solvent stimulation appears to be an unqualified success in one well and a moderate success in the other.

This report describes the development, oil recovery, and potentialities of productive formations in the Hall-Gurney field, Russell County, Kans. It is presented as part of a general program to aid and promote increased recovery from petroleum reservoirs. The report is based on studies of well logs, drill cuttings, and oil-and water-production histories of individual wells and leases. The geological interpretations follow closely those in published literature with only slight local modifications. Oil and water analyses, made at a Bureau of Mines research center, were supplemented by many analyses obtained from oil-producing and service companies. The Hall-Gurney field, in south central Russell County, Kans., (fig. 1) was discovered in 1931 but was not developed extensively until 1941. By 1960 the rate of oil production from the field had declined to the extent that many wells were abandoned. In some areas natural productive forces have effected good recovery. However, in other areas inefficient waterflooding, both natural and accidental, has adversely affected recovery potentialities.

At the Southern Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines, reports are prepared from time to time on results of washability studies of commercially important coal beds in the Southern Appalachian region. The investigations that provide the material for these reports are made by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the mine operators. This report records the results obtained on a sample of run-of-mine coal taken in June 1953 from the Pratt bed at the Davidson Coal Co. mine about 1 mile west of Graysville, Ala. One of the main objectives of a washability study is to obtain technically and commercially important data in connection with the best methods for preparing and utilizing the Nation's limited reserves of good coking coal. Such information is important from the standpoint of conservation in that it facilitates selection of preparation methods that will yield an acceptable grade of coking coal with a mini-mum of losses of coal in the rejects. The Pratt bed is one of the main sources of coking coal in the Jefferson County part of the Warrior field. This is the first time, however, that data from a complete washability study of coal have been obtained from this bed in Jefferson County. In the Graysville area, Pratt-bed coal has good coking characteristics and is used for blending with other coals in making metallurgical coal. The extent of its use in such blends is severely limited in this area, however, by the fact that it has a high sulfur content, which has not been reducible to any great extent by washery treatment.

For more than 20 years, Belgium, leading all the coal-mining countries, has made increasing use of sheathed explosives, which wore first suggested by the late E. Lemaire, predecessor of the author as Director of the Institut National des Mines. It appears to the author that it will be valuable to show how the use of sheathed explosives has developed in Belgium, hour the various difficulties encountered in their manufacture have been overcome gradually, and the tyres of sheathing that have survived and the reasons for their survival.

"SUMMARYThis report is one of a series giving results of laboratory and pilot-plant investigations of the concentration of western manganese ores begun in December 1940. Data given summarize results of laboratory investigation of three samples of complex oxide manganese ores from the Madeline property, Lake View, and Victory claims, Clallam County (Olympic Peninsula), Wash. The samples represented an extremely intimate and complex association of manga¬nese oxide minerals with silica and iron.Owing to the complex nature of the ores, no effective concentration by ore-dressing methods was possible. No high-grade manganese concentrates were produced and the highest recovery at minimum accountable grade was only 55 percent on one of the ores tested.Since the Clallem County ores did not respond to ore-dressing methods, leaching processes were investigated, results of which are to be published in a separate report.INTRODUCTIONOre-beneficiation tests were conducted on three samples of manganese oxide ere from the Madeline, Lakeview, and Victory claims, Clallam County, Wash. The ores are extremely complex because of the unusually small size of manganese mineral particles, their mode of occurrence, and relationship to the gangue. To identify construction materials for emerging technology in chemical and metallurgical processes, the Bureau of Mines investigated the acid resistance of ceramic materials. Eight commercial ceramic materials comprising two red shale, two fire clay, a silica, a five-claybonded silicon carbide, a carbon, and a high-alumina brick were evaluated. Samples were exposed for 110 days to 20 wt pct HCl at 50°, 70°, and 90° C and to 30 wt pct HCl at 70° C. Statistically significant changes in cold crushing strength, volume, and weight were generally small or not detected. The leach rates of Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na, Si, and Ti ions were monitored. The carbon brick sample had the best acid resistant properties with a maximum total leached ion weight loss of 0.004 wt pct. The silicon carbide, the silica, and one of the fire clay bricks also had excellent acid-resistant properties.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines study examined spontaneous heating episodes in coal mine pillars in an active underground coal mine. The information obtained from these incidents was then analyzed to learn which sampling methods provided the earliest indication of pillar heating. The objective of this study was to discover if the location of future events of pillar spontaneous heating could be inferred from the available information. The spontaneous heating-prone area in this evaluation involved pillars located just in by the mine portals. Several detection methods were used to determine gas levels outside as well as inside the affected pillars. It was hoped that, by incorporating external and internal sampling methods into an organized program, locations undergoing spontaneous heating could be determined more readily. This study found that by drilling small-diameter boreholes into the pillars, then obtaining gas samples from the affected pillars, the ability to locate early spontaneous heating episodes was improved. However, the ability to accurately predict future spontaneous heating events remains in question.

Bureau of MinesThe Bureau of Mines studied the development of practical methods for recovering manganese from the extensive domestic resources of low-grade ores and open hearth slags. A one-step operation was developed on a laboratory scale in which manganese and iron compounds are treated with chlorine, volatilized, and separated by selective condensation. Manganese recoveries of 90 to nearly 100 percent were obtained from 9 of the most important domestic ores. Analyses of the manganese chloride product indicated that it was suit-able for aqueous electrolysis with little additional purification. A complete, integrated process that provides for the recovery and recycling of chlorine is proposed. This process appears to have distinct advantages over previously proposed manganese recovery processes, and, in sharp contrast to leaching procedures, it is applicable to practically any manganese-bearing material.

Using bench-and pilot-scale coking facilities, the Bureau of Mines produced experimental coke from blends of char with Sunnyside coal (high-volatile A bituminous) from Carbon County, Utah. At bench scale, additions of char made from lignite improved resultant cokes when concentrations of up to 60 pct were used in the blends. At pilot scale (500-pound movable-wall oven), four chars made by entrained-bed carbonization techniques from the parent Sunnyside coal and from a North Dakota lignite were used in two-component blends with the Sunnsyide coal. Chars from Sunnyside coal had volatile matter contents of 5.8, 9.8, and 16.0 pct, moisture-free basis; the char from the lignite had 16.6 pct. In twenty-five 500-pound tests, improvement in coke quality was observed from all blends at char concentrations to 17.5 pct. The best coke, produced from a concentration of 12.5 to 15 pct of S.8-pct volatile char, exhibited physical properties approaching those of an industrial coke produced from Sunnyside coal blended with three higher rank blending coals. Studies were also made of the effects on coke quality of char source, of particle size, of comparative use of char and of a blending coal, and of prolonged coal storage.
