This information circular. deais primarily with an engineering descrip- tion of a type of longwall cutting and loading machine developed by Eick- hoff Maschinenfabrik, Bochum, Germany..: This machine is supposed to have been developed and tested during the latter part of 1941 and early 1942. The only source of information is con- tained in certain literature and engineering data, with drawings which were acquired by the Allied Military Authorities when Germany was occupied; and the information will have to be limited because the writer has not seen the machine in the factory or in operation. However, the information may be of interest to the coal-mining industry in this country, and for this reason our Government has decided to publish the data procured so far. The Eickhoff cutting and loading machine is particularly suitable for the longwall mining system. It can only be used under that type of mining system and is not suitable for the more common type known in this country as room-and-pillar work. The material for the description of the machine and its operation was compiled and translated from German drawings and operating instructions. These detailed drawings and instructions are on file with the Bureau of Mines and are available for inspection by any responsible person interested in the details of the construction of the machine.

As part of an investigation of the production of alumina by the nitric acid leaching of kaolinitic clay, the Bureau of Mines designed, built, and tested a fluidized-bed system for the calcination of aluminum nitrate nonahydrate to alumina, while recovering nitric acid. The calciner consisted of an 8-in-square by 36-in-tall vessel containing 18 in of fluidized solids. Molten aluminum nitrate, sprayed directly into the fluidized solids, formed sandy, granular alumina by growth of successive layers on fluidized particles. Solids were fluidized in a dense bed at temperatures of 250° to 500° C with steam, air, or mixtures thereof. Decomposition of nitrate ranged from 4 to 10 pet during single-pass steam or air fluidization, respectively. Alumina dust losses and low throughput are significant unsolved problem areas.

Over-exposure to noise remains a widespread and serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industries despite 25 years of regulation. Every day, 80% of the nation’s miners go to work in an environment where the time weighted average (TWA) noise level exceeds 85 dBA and more than 25% of the miners are exposed to a TWA noise level that exceeds 90 dBA, the permissible exposure limit (PEL). Additionally, MSHA coal noise sample data collected from 2000 to 2002 show that 65% of the equipment whose operators exceeded 100% noise dosage comprise only seven different types of machines; auger miners, bulldozers, continuous miners, front end loaders, roof bolters, shuttle cars (electric), and trucks. In addition, the MSHA data indicate that the roof bolter is third among all the equipment and second among equipment in underground coal whose operators exceed 100% dosage. A research program was implemented to: 1) determine, characterize and to measure sound power levels radiated by a roof bolting machine during differing drilling configurations (thrust, rotational speed, penetration rate, etc.) and utilizing differing types of drilling methods in high compressive strength rock media (>20,000 psi). The research approach characterized the sound power level results from laboratory testing and provided the mining industry with empirical data relative to utilizing differing noise control technologies (drilling configurations and types of drilling methods) in reducing sound power level emissions on a roof bolting machine; 2) distinguish and correlate the empirical data into one, statistically valid, equation, in which, provided the mining industry with a tool to predict overall sound power levels of a roof bolting machine given any type of drilling configuration and drilling method utilized in industry; 3) provided the mining industry with several approaches to predict or determine sound pressure levels in an underground coal mine utilizing laboratory test results from a roof bolting machine and 4) described a method for determining an operators’ noise dosage of a roof bolting machine utilizing predicted or determined sound pressure levels.

The preparation and subsequent reduction of vanadium trichloride was investigated as a process for the production of high-purity vanadium metal. Chlorine was reacted with vanadium oxide in the presence of carbon to vanadium tetrachloride. The contaminant vanadium oxytrichloride was also formed and later converted to tetrachloride by reaction with chlorine in the presence of activated charcoal. Vanadium tetrachloride was stirred continuously during thermal dissociation to vanadium trichloride powder from which volatile contaminants were removed by distillation. The vanadium trichloride powder was reduced to vanadium sponge by controlled feeding of the trichloride into molten magnesium. Excess reductant and byproduct salt were removed from the vanadium sponge by high-vacuum distillation. Batches as large as 6.5 kilograms of sponge metal were prepared at an average reaction efficiency of 98 percent. Vanadium sponge after consolidation by arc-melting contained 820 to 11330 ppm of interstitial impurities and had a hardness between Rockwell B 40 and 70, This metal exhibited excellent workability at room temperature. The purification of impure vanadium metal by electron-beam melting resulted in lowering interstitial impurities from 1,890 to 504 ppm and hardness from Rockwell B 87 to 28.

In the context of the following report, an hazardous location can be described as any industrial area in/which flammable or explosive gases, vapors, and dusts can be encountered. When electrical apparatus is used in such hazardous atmospheres, the chance of a dust or gas ignition is ever present. Consequently, in an effort to reduce the ignition hazard, several protection systems have been devised. Such systems are termed electrical hazard reduction techniques. The most widely accepted and used of these, the explosion-proof enclosure, is the principal subject of this report. However, other techniques are briefly mentioned. Hazard reduction techniques used in coal mine atmospheres (which can contain methane, coal dust, and air mixtures) are classified as Group I. The explosion-proof enclosure commonly used in mines is defined by the USBM Schedule 2G as a device that can contain internal explosions of methane-air mixtures without undergoing damage or excessive distortion and without an ignition of a surrounding methane-air mixture or discharge of flame. (100) Internationally, the definition remains the same except the words "discharge of flame" are not present. (4,5,31,42,52,76,102) The latter description often refers to flame-roof enclosure construction, but the terms "flameproof: and "explosion-proof" commonly have the same connotation. These enclosures which may not be vapor tight, are distinguished by heavy-wall cast or welded construction and bolted or threaded close fitting flanges. Develop an improved downhole geophone system with enhanced signal/noise ratio for collecting cross-hole seismic data used in tomographic reconstructions. Background The Bureau of Mines is conducting research in the use of cross-hole seismic tomography for detecting and monitoring leach solution flow during in situ mining. This technique requires the use of a downhole seismic energy source in one borehole and a downhole wall-locking receiver (geophone) in another borehole separated from the first by the region to be investigated. Bureau research personnel chose a commercially available air gun for use as the downhole seismic energy source. Unfortunately, commercially available downhole wall-locking geophones that the Bureau tested were difficult to operate in the field, often unreliable and generally inadequate in terms of their signal/noise ratio. Therefore, research personnel began to experiment with an alternative down-hole geophone design that could be used to collect adequate data in a wide variety of borehole and cross-hole field situations. Approach An attractive alternative geophone design would be one that would incorporate a pneumatically operated wall-locking system. As an integral part of the Bureau's existing field system, a portable, high- pressure/low-volume air compressor would have sufficient capacity to operate the air gun as well as several small high-pressure pneumatic linear actuators. This approach was the simplest and most compatible with the research activities being conducted at the site.

Electrical resistivities for various coal ashes in air and in a nitrogen atmosphere are given over the range 100° to 1,500° F. Resistivity of low-carbon ash in air is very high at low temperature, rises to a maximum at about 250° F, decreases very rapidly with increasing temperature to about 800° F, then decreases gradually to approach an asymptote at 1,500° F. Resistivity of high-carbon ash in air follows this same general trend at values which are much lower and are proportional to the carbon content. After the carbon has been burned off, resistivity of the remaining ash approaches the high values corresponding to low-carbon ash of similar chemistry. Two factorial experiments show the effects of temperature, particle size, chemical content, and compressibility on the resistivities of four fly ashes of widely different chemical composition in the temperature range proposed for coal-fired turbines. Resistivities of all low-carbon ashes tested fall in the range 106 to 107 ohm cm at 1,500° F and should be removable by electrostatic precipitators. Ashes containing carbon in excess of about 8 percent, however, have low resistivity (as determined in nitrogen), especially at high temperatures. Therefore, high-carbon materials may not be collectable in precipitators because the resistivity is below the minimum value necessary for precipitation. Consequently, high carbon residues from partial combustion of coal probably could not be removed effectively at high temperatures.

In the Pennsylvania anthracite region, the principal source of U.S. anthracite, refuse disposal problems are common since cities and towns are located over the anthracite measures. The Bureau of Mines surveyed refuse banks in the area, determining that 863 banks containing aver 910 million cubic yards of material occupy a total area of about 19 square miles. The vast bulk of the refuse is located within 2 miles of the traffic centers of incorporated c unities which have a total population of 625,000. Twenty-seven banks are burning, causing considerable distress in a number of communities.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated two different conventionallongwall gate entry systems in the Southern Appalachian Basin, where mining and geologic conditions are conducive for coal pillar bumps. These gate entry systems were in a coal mine located in the Pocahontas No.3 Coalbed under approximately 2,000 ft of overburden and a massive quartzite sandstone member, and both employed a center abutment pillar flanked by yield pillars. The 8O-ft-square tailgate abutment pillars within the first study area began bumping 500 ft in advance of mining. This was accompanied by face bumps on the tailgate corner of the longwall face. The 120-by 180-ft tailgate abutment pillars within the second study area did not begin to bump until mining was approximately 100 ft past. Coalbed stress change and abutment pillar dilation data demonstrated that a 15-ft-wide perimeter of yielded coal surrounded a highly stressed core in both sizes of abutment pillars. The 62 pet more core area per foot of gate entry in the larger abutment pillars prevented excessive load transfer to the corner of the tailgate panel and eliminated the face bumps experienced with the original gate entry design.

Batch and continuous - circuit flotation , leaching , precipitation , and electrodeposition studies were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine optimum conditions for treatment of complex mercury - antimony sulfide and mercury- arsenic sulfide ores and concentrates . On the Red Devil ore sample over 95 percent of both the mercury and antimony sulfides were recovered in a flotation concentrate containing 35.6 percent mercury and 21.0 percent antimony . By selective flotation a mercury concentrate containing 71.0 percent mercury and 2.9 percent antimony was obtained with a mercury recovery of 90.4 percent . Leaching results show that , with 150 grams per liter of sodium sulfide and 50 grams per liter of sodium hydroxide , 95 to 99 percent of the mercury , antimony , and arsenic sulfides could be extracted from the concentrates treated . Sodium hydroxide reagent consumption was based on the sulfides generated in the dissolution of the sulfide minerals and on the method of metal recovery used . Selective leaching of the antimony and arsenic sulfides with potassium sulfide dissolved more than 95 percent of either of these two sulfides and 0.5 to 5 percent of the mercury sulfide present . Methods for recovering mercury and antimony from solution were electrodeposition of mercury followed by electrodeposition of antimony , aluminum precipitation of both mercury and antimony , or antimony precipitation of mercury followed by antimony electrodeposition . The continuous miner training system provides classroom materials training aids, and a continuous miner simulator to provide a short, intensive instruction and skills development program for training or retraining continuous miner operators. This project included refinement of training objectives, revision of training aids, improvements to the simulator, and evaluation of the entire system. This report describes the revised classroom materials and the validation of the training system.

A special inlet system has been developed for a TOF mass spectrometer that allows the equilibrated high-temperature vapors from an atmospheric-pressure flow reactor to be leaked into the ion source of the mass spectrometer without undergoing any compositional changes. Using this flow reactor - mass spectrometer system and a modified transpiration system (one that allows for the carrier stream to be equilibrated with two different condensed samples) a series of fundamental vapor transport studies were undertaken. The results of these studies are summarized as follows: 1. The vapor species in equilibrium with condensed copper (I) chloride were determined to be Cu3C13, Cu4C14, and Cu5C15. The gas mixture is fifty percent tetramer near the melting point (703°K), with the percentage of tetramer decreasing with increasing temperature. The following thermodynamic results were obtained.

This is the final report of work accomplished during 1973-75 under U. S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. H0242015, "System for Handling Underground Mine Supplies and Materials." The purpose of the contract was to develop a mechanical device which could safely perform handling tasks that are normally done manually in underground bituminous coal mines. The report discusses studies leading to construct-ion of a battery-operated, three-wheel vehicle with a six-degree-of-freedom manipulator. Supportive design studies included collection and analysis of production, manual functions, and injury data on the underground bituminous coal mining industry. Transfer tasks in section storage and working places were the prime candidates for mechanical handling. Functional specifications were developed for two handling devices (one to handle existing unit loads and one to handle repackaged unit loads) and for a vehicle to mount the handling device. Design concepts for nine different handling devices were developed and a cost/benefit evaluation made for each. Detail design, capital and operating costs, and method improvement savings data were developed for two battery-operated vehicles and for two different manipulators. The three-wheel vehicle with anthropomorphic manipulator was chosen for development.

Increased employment and a lower accident-frequency rate were the outstanding features of the metal- and nonmetal-mining4 industries of the United States in 1939 compared with 1933, according to reports furnished by individual mining companies to the Bureau of Vines, United States Department of the Interior. Except for 1937, the reports for 1939 showed gains both in number of employees and number of mar -hours worked over all years since 1929. The accident-frequency rate per million man-hours of exposure to mining hazards was lower than in any year since 1925. Reports for 1939 revealed a total of 111,909 men employed in and about mines, an increase of inure than 8 percent over 1931 The total volume of labor performed at all mires was slightly more than 299 million plan-hours, an increase of mare than 10 percent over 1938. As these gains suggest, the average employee had a longer period of work in 1939, the increase amounting to r workdays per employee.

BUREAU OF MINES helium plants produced a. record-breaking 477 million cubic feet of this essential element in 1959. The supply of helium was less than the demand before operations were resumed at the Navajo plant in July and begun Sit a. new plant at Keyes, Okla., in August. Helium was in abundant supply after August, and the informal allocation system which had been in use intermittently since 1955 was discontinued Delivery of 26 new tank cars in August and September increased the total in the tank-car pool to 163. Defense and space agencies and the Atomic Energy Commission continued to use more helium in their operations and research.

A portable optical instrument for performing multispot laser vibrometry is described. The instrument is capable of measuring arrival times, surface motion frequency, and surface velocity and displaying these quantities in various useful ways. Sigma Research is currently pursuing the development of such optical measuring systems for the evaluation of structures in rock by non-contact interferometry methods. This work was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Interior (U.S. Bureau of Mines) under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract number J0145075. The goal of the work was to develop a portable tripod mounted measuring system which can be set up at arbitrary distances (up to 30 meters) from a surface and project four in-line laser sample beams on this surface. A light receiving telescope gathers the scattered light from these four spots and provisions are made to mix this light with a reference beam from the laser. Four photodiodes are employed to determine the resultant interference signals which characterize the motion (particle velocity, frequency, amplitude) of the four illuminated spots on the surface under sudy. Information of this type can then be used to characterize the elastic or mechanical properties of the surface in question. In some cases (if more than four spots are involved) this surface information could be back propagated to draw inferences about the internal state of the material volume bounded by this surface.

The Bureau of Mines is developing melting data for binary combinations of the alkaline earth fluorides and yttria to facilitate the formulation of slag composition. Liquidus and solidus temperatures and solid solubilities were determined for the BaF2-Y203 system, and the information is presented as the phase diagram. The phase diagram was constructed from data obtained by ceramography, X-ray diffraction, and thermal analysis of specimens encapsulated in small molybdenum ampoules. The data indicate a simple eutectic system with maximum terminal solid solubilities of less than 1 mole pct. The eutectic temperature is 1,343° C, and the composition of the eutectic is less than 1 mole pct Y203.

THIS PUBLICATION presents injury experience and employment data for the nonmetal mining industry in the United States for 1960. Data for the mines and mills are presented separately, as shown in the list of tables. The Bureau of Mines is authorized to send questionnaires to the nonmetal mining industry for their voluntary submission of injury and employment data. As the information submitted contributes largely to the promotion of safety in the industry, special effort has been made to ma e these questionnaires as complete as possible.
