This paper presents the details of milling practice and costs at the conglomerate mill of the Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Co., Lake Linden, Mich., and is one of a series on milling methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The mines of the Calumet & Hecla. Consolidated Copper Co. are located in the Keweenaw Peninsula of northern Michigan. The mines of this district lie in a belt not over 4 miles wide and 100 miles long, which contains more or lees commercial ore. The Calumet & Hecla properties are the farthest north, except for the Seneca, of the operating mines. The district borders on Lake Superior, and by means of the Portage and Torch Lake waterways the largest lane vessels, can transport coal and other supplies from the lower Lakes directly to the company docks.

These investigations were undertaken as part of a program to determine the optimum X-ray spectral lines to use for analyzing the wide variety of samples received by the X-ray Laboratory. Theoretical calculations and experimental data derived from these investigations show that longer wavelength spectral lines, > 2A, are very useful for many analytical problems. Because of the low fluorescence yield of the elements of atomic numbers 13-22 and the small depth of penetration of their X-ray spectral lines, these elements were originally considered to be insensitive; however, these studies show that the wide dispersion of their spectral lines, coupled with their weak beta lines, permits the use of wide collimation, thus increasing the line intensity. More importantly, the background due to scattered primary radiation is very low in the long-wavelength region.

This is a revision of a directory of coal research organizations throughout the world that was first published in 1961 as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8008. Because of the wide acceptance of the first edition, a revision which would supply up-to-date information on coal research and which would facilitate communication among organizations of similar interest seemed important. This compilation includes the names and activities of organizations of various types-government, university, private, and industry. The areas of investigation that each organization is engaged in are indicated in broad terms: Analysis and constitution, mining and geology, preparation, briquetting, combustion, high-and low-temperature carbonization, gasification, conversion to solid and liquid fuels, and health and safety. Publications issued by and describing the work of each organization are cited; almost all of the organizations also publish results of their investigations in the technical press. Selected technical and trade publications that publish information on the science and technology of coal and are not published directly by any of the organizations listed are cited in the pages following the list of organizations in each country. Information that would improve coverage and accuracy of the next revision of the publication will be welcomed by the Bureau of Mines.

At the request of several Federal agencies, tests were conducted on a relatively recent type of anthracite -burning equipment named the Anthratube. This device, rated at 130,000 B.t .u. per hour, was designed to burn Pea-size anthracite automatically for steam or hot-water house heating and for domes-tic hot -water supply. Research to evaluate the lubricity effects achieved by spraying water on the cutting bit of a mining machine or spraying water on the coal during cutting has shown that neither practice affects cutting forces, as had been believed. However, when water was supplied to the cutting zone axially through the bit at 3,000 to 5,000 psi pressure, tangent'ial cutting forces were reduced an average of 30 pct at a I-in depth of cut while normal bit forces were reduced an average of 65 pct. Lower normal forces mean reduced bit wear, faster advance with greater depth of cut, and fewer coal fines.

"Experience and experiment have goth shown that a cloud of coal-dust in air can be inflamed and an explosion developed only when a certain minimum concentration of the dust in air has been equaled or exceeded. Those who have had experience in the handling of coal know that dust is frequently present in the air and may be of sufficient density to obscure an ordinary electric light at a distance of 40 or 50 feet; yet flames may be, and times without number have been, introduced into such clouds, when no additional coal-dust has been stirred up, with no effect other than the burning of the dust particles which actually enter flame. Evidently the density of the dust cloud is insufficient to give self-supporting combustion.The minimum amount of dust in air required to give a spreading flame will vary with a number of factors such as the composition of the dust and its size. This amount in a unit space may be considered analogous to the lower limit of inflammability of fire damp (methane) in air, although the variation in limit of explosibility of gas is small even when conditions of the experiment are altered. In large-scale determinations of the lower limit of inflammability of coal-dust there is no certain method by which a sample of the dust cloud can be snatched and its density determined. It is necessary to produce the best possible dust cloud from a known weight of dust, in a known volume and assume - probably with considerable error - that the dust cloud is reasonably uniform. The dust cloud must be formed and the source of ignition applied to it simultaneously; this is generally accomplished by the use of blow-out shots of black blasting powder, dynamite, or similar explosive so prepared as to blow out like a cannon shot, or by a gas explosion. The more violence attending the source of ignition, the greater is the probability that all the dust is raised in a uniform cloud; and the greater the length or intensity of the flame, the greater are the chances of ignition. As a result one may obtain a variation in apparent minimum density with different sources of ignition. This difference is more apparent than real and must remain until devices for instantaneous sampling of dust clouds during explosions are perfected."

The effect of uranium on the transformation kinetics and the hardenability of a low- alloy steel was evaluated . Isothermal transformation curves were developed from metallographic studies , and hardenability was determined by standard Jominy end- quench tests . For the steels investigated , the addition of 0.15 weight- percent uranium was found to produce a significant shift in the isothermal transformation curve and caused a related increase in hardenability . These effects diminished rapidly when the uranium content was increased above 0.2 weight - percent .

Tests were made at the Government Fuel Yard , operated at Washington , D. C. by the Bureau of Mines , Department of the Interior , in order to determine and improve the adjustment of the carburetors on the trucks used for transporting coal from the Fuel Yard to the different Government buildings in Washington . The tests were made possible through the hearty cooperation of G , S. Pope , engineer in charge of the Fuel Yard . Joseph Burrows and A. E. Foote of the garage department assisted during all the tests and supplied information on the mileage obtained by the trucks for the months preceding and succeding the time the tests were made . The Mack trucks used range in capacity from 2-1/2 to 7-1/2 ttoonnss .. The majority of the carburetors were Stromberg G- 3 type , as shown in Table 2. During the winter months , when the demand for coal is heavy , from 30 to 35 trucks are used . At the time the tests were made , only about ten of the trucks were in daily use , owing to the small demand for coal during the summer months , and scarcity due to labor conditions . Samples of the exhaust gas were taken on the trucks kept in service for summer hauling in order to determine the carburetor adjustment as used . Changes were then made to a more economical adjustment wherever possible , without sacrificing flexibility of operation and power . In every case the adjustments were maintained for maximum power , but were adjusted to the leanest position to give that power . In all but one case the carburetors were found to be adjusted too rich for maximum power and economy . These results are considered in detail in a later part of this report .

The Act of Congress approved June 25, 1926 (Public Act 424, 69th Congress), authorized joint investigations by the U. S. Geological Survey and the U. S. Bureau of Mines to determine "the location, extent, and mode of occurrence of potash deposits in the United States." The particular deposits selected for exploration were the extensive rock-salt formations underlying large areas in western Texas and southeastern New Mexico, from which potash salts had been identified in the cuttings and sludges from oil wells drilled with cable tools. The evidence of these sludge samples was qualitative only and beyond definitely proving the presence of potash salts in the salt beds, gave little clue to the possible size, richness, or extent of the potash occurrences.

This report (Safety File Guidance 6.0) is the eighth in a nine-part series of recommendations and guidance addressing the functional safety of processor-controlled mining equipment. It is part of a risk-based system safety process encompassing hardware, software, humans, and the operating environment for the equipment’s life cycle. Figure 1 shows a safety framework containing these recommendations. The reports in this series address the various life cycle stages of inception, design, approval and certification, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. These recommendations were developed as a joint project between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. They are intended for use by mining companies, original equipment manufacturers, and aftermarket suppliers to these mining companies. Users of these reports are expected to consider the set in total during the design cycle. • 1.0 Safety Introduction (Part 1).—This is an introductory report for the general mining industry. It provides basic system/software safety concepts, discusses the need for mining to address the functional safety of programmable electronics (PE), and includes the benefits of implementing a system/software safety program. • 2.1 System Safety (Part 2) and 2.2 Software Safety (Part 3).—These reports draw heavily from International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard IEC 61508 [IEC 1998a,b,c,d,e,f,g]and other standards. The scope is “surface and underground safety-related mining systems employing embedded, networked, and nonnetworked programmable electronics.” System safety seeks to design safety into all phases of the entire system. Software is a subsystem; thus, software safety is a part of the system’s safety. • 3.0 Safety File (Part 4).—This report contains the documentation that demonstrates the level of safety built into the system and identifies limitations for the system’s use and operation. In essence, it is a “proof of safety” that the system and its operation meet the appropriate level of safety for the intended application. It starts from the beginning of the design, is maintained during the full life cycle of the system, and provides administrative support for the safety program of the full system. • 4.0 Safety Assessment (Part 5).—The independent assessment of the safety file is addressed. It establishes consistent methods to determine the completeness and suitability of safety evidence and justifications. This assessment could be conducted by an independent third party. • Safety Framework Guidance.—It is intended to supplement the safety framework reports with guidance providing users with additional information. The purpose is to assist users in applying the concepts presented. In other words, the safety framework is what needs to be done and the guidance is how it can be done. The guidance information reinforces the concepts, describes various methodologies that can be used, and gives examples and references. It also gives information on the benefits and drawbacks of various methodologies. The guidance reports are not intended to promote a single methodology or to be an exhaustive treatment of the subject material. They provide information and references so that the user can more intelligently choose and implement the appropriate methodologies given the user’s application and capabilities. In 1981 and 1985-1986, the Bureau of Mines conducted orientation studies of marine placer platinum-group metals (PGM). PGM are derived from the Goodnews Bay ultramafic complex and magnetic surveys show that the complex extends offshore at least four mi. The present seafloor was an emergent foreland as recently as 8000 years ago. High-energy ocean processes are transporting and depositing sediment such that PGM-bearing materials are reworked and later masked by barren littoral drift. Exploration targets include 1) placers formed since present transgression began, and 2) ancient marine and drowned fluvial deposits. Additionally, there is evidence of PGM solution transport and accretion. At least minor values of PGM in Recent lag-type placers and possible submarine strands are concentrated along an offshore scarp incised through glacial deposits into the preglacial surface between Flat Cape and Red Mountain. Other Recent PGM-bearing features include Flat Cape shoal, Chagvan Bay, Salmon River delta, and modern beaches. Ancient placers include possible N-S fluvial systems 2 to 3 mi offshore, a nearshore scarp 50 ft below sea level, and strands adjacent to projected ultramafic bedrock slopes. The existance of ancient placers is dependent on depth of glacial erosion. SEM studies show PGM are principally isoferroplatinum and osmiridium, with minor sperrylite, moncheite, and platiniridium. Gold is a co-product, and concentrates comprise chromite, ilmenite, and magnetite. Beneficiation tests successfully concentrated precious metals from natural blacksand accumulations, but failed to concentrate low-grade lag gravels.

In 1947 the Bureau of Mines, as an accident-prevention measure, decided to advocate the adoption of roof bolting (suspension roof supports) in coal mines where it appeared to be applicable. Subsequent experience has disclosed that the applicability of this support is more general than was first suspected; moreover, comparison of the accident records of mines before and after adoption of the roof-bolting method shows results that more than justify the effort and funds expended. The industry has responded enthusiastically, because roof bolting proved to be not only an accident-prevention measure but also one to increase productive efficiency. In some instances this increase in the productivity of men and machines has been almost incredible and has led many mining men to conclude that through some hocus-pocus they can now cast aside many or all of the time-proven rule of good mining practice. If this tendency is not counteracted, it could easily result in an increase of roof-fall accidents, which may outweigh the benefits of roof bolting and discredit an innovation in roof control that shows great promise of materially reducing our mining accidents. From an economic standpoint it may represent the margin between profit and loss in many mining operations. The purpose of this manuscript is not to propose an inflexible code or set of rules but to summarize the experience to date as a guide for those who have the responsibility for the installation and inspection of roof bolts. This experience consists of approximately 250 investigations of roof failure in which roof bolting was involved either directly or indirectly. It should be pointed out that many of these failures were controlled, occurring during experimental periods, and comparatively few of the accidental failures actually resulted in personal injury, yet a significant number represented potential hazards.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a monitoring system that acquires and analyzes data for use in determining the conditions that may precede mountain bumps in coal mines. Based on a UNIX workstation linked to an array of geophones in a working longwall operation, the system captures complete waveforms of microseismic events and simultaneously obtains continuous samples of the voltage levels of each geophone. Event rates and locations are calculated and displayed in real time on the UNIX workstation, which is situated in an underground instrumentation room. These results also are transmitted from the workstation to a display computer near the longwall face. The system runs continuously and has the capability to acquire, analyze, display, and archive microseismic (transient) data and single point data, such as closure and pressure changes, simultaneously.

Bituminous coal mining in the United States is currently experiencing a period of rapid growth which began in the early 1960&apos;s. Future demands are conservatively predicted to rise to 700 million tons by 1980 and to anywhere between 1 to 3 billion tons by the turn of the century. This means a continuous expansion of coal production by a factor of at least two can be expected before the end of the century. Over the last few years, production from underground mining has decreased; yet it is about 50% of the total coal output. In the absence of any discovery of near surface coal deposits, and even after conceding that some deeper deposits can be surface mined with changes in technology it can be reasonably assumed that coal production from underground will continue to play an important part in solving the energy crisis.

The Bureau of Mines subjected two manufacturers&apos; chemical oxygen (K02) self-rescue breathing apparatus to a series of laboratory environmental treatments designed to simulate various conditions in underground coal mines. The environmental treatments consisted of extremes of temperature, shock, and vibration. The tests were designed to be used as predictors of the ability of the self-rescuers to survive those environmental insults with no degradation in their protection to the wearer. Based on the severity of the treatments, simulating conditions more severe than offered by the mining environment, the two apparatus tested should be able to withstand the abuse offered by the mining environment and still function as intended in an emergency. Correlation of these tests with results of long-term field evaluations is needed to provide confidence in the laboratory tests as predictors.

The pressure and flame development of the methane-air-nitrogen system was investigated in the Bureau&apos;s l2-foot-diameter sphere to define buoyancy effects and to develop relationships for predicting venting requirements. Pressure rise (?P) is defined as a function of time (t) and nitrogen dilution and is shown to deviate noticeably from the cubic law (?P = kt3), depending upon the period of combustion and the mixture composition. Corresponding flame speed (Sf) and burning velocity (Su) data are given which show that Sf is time dependent and that Na dilution has a greater effect than air dilution in inhibiting the flame propagation. The Su data agree with "accepted" values and are unique in that they are based on much larger flames than those used in other investigations. Downward propagation limits are shown to depend mainly upon buoyant forces, which can affect the burning of even stoichiometric CH4-air systems. Theoretical expressions, based on the mixture burning velocity and expansion ratio, are given for predicting the venting requirements for ignitions of hydrocarbon-air-nitrogen mixtures in spherical or cubical enclosures.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the results of a study of mine inspection records covering 2,200 mining installations over a 3-year period ending December 1974. Tables show the relative frequency of violations of certain provisions of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 in particular areas of concern, such as circuit breakers, grounding, and permissibility. Examples of past use of the data and analyses are presented.

This is one of a series of papers dealing with mining methods and costs prepared under the sponsorship of end in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines. The mining methods described in this paper are those used in one of the large mines producing fluorspar in the Kentucky-Illinois fluorspar field, located in southern Illinois and western Kentucky on the Ohio River. The occurrence of ore and the methods of wining are similar to those in other mines in the district; therefore information regarding methods and the results obtained should be of interest. Improvements in methods have been made as experience developed the need of them. The trine is situated at Rosiclare, Ill., on the Illinois Central Railroad, and shipments are also made b r barge on the Ohio River.

The residues resulting from the retort distillation of zinc ores have from 40 to 75 per cent of the weight of the original ore and contain from 5 to 15 per cent zinc . A rough estimate indicates that approximately 450,000 tons of residues are produced annually in the United States , containing about 36,000 tons of zinc . Besides the current production of residues there are at many smelter sites large accumulations from past operations which are available for treatment if this can be done profitably . In addition to their zinc content the residues contain much unconsumed coal , which has been carbonized during the distillation process , and those from most western ores also contain lead and silver . In this paper is summarized the information obtained in a survey , recently made by the Bureau of Mines , in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy , of processes which are in use or which have been suggested for the treatment of retort residues . The complete report of the survey is to be published as a Technical Paper of the Bureau of Mines .
