The time-cost-risk analysis described herein was performed as part of an evaluation of the Advancing Oil Shale Mining Technology Program performed by The Aerospace Corporation. The objectives of this analysis are to assess the feasibility of the program relative' to time and cost constraints, and to determine the probabilities of achieving various technological goals. A combination of standard program planning and analysis techniques were used to achieve these objectives. These included a critical path analysis, a resource allocation analysis, and a risk analysis.

The thermal diffusivity above 298 K, up to 400 K and at pressures from ambient down to 10-10 torr was measured for the following six igneous rock types: tholeiitic basalt, obsidian, rhyolite, granodiorite, gabbro, and dunite. The thermal diffusivity data were obtained by the laser flash method. Extreme values range from a low of 5.3X10-3 cmF/sec for rhyolite at 383 K and 2X10-7 torr to a high of 13.4x10-3 crrf/sec for dunite at 298 K and 760 torr. Data are also included on a commercial fused silica, which was used as a standard.

Although the Stamler feeder/breaker has been used for coal crushing in underground mines for many years, it has only recently been applied to other crushing operations. Two companies presently using Stamler feeder/breakers for rock crushing were contacted regarding their experiences with the units in actual field use. In both cases information was obtained directly from the individuals responsible for field operation and maintenance of the units. White Pine Copper Co. has been using Stamler feeder/breakers for over two years to crush copper ore. They now have fourteen 450-ton-per-hour units on line. The ore has a compressive strength of from 18,000 to 28,000 psi and is extremely abrasive. Maintenance is performed on a tonnage basis. The breaker shaft is replaced every 250,000 tons (requiring about 4 hrs) and picks are replaced about every 1500 tons by the operator (requiring about 2 min per pick). Very little unscheduled maintenance has been required. Crushing costs are fairly high (estimated at 13 to 15t per ton including maintenance and operation) because of tale extreme abrasiveness of the material. A new Stamler feeder/breaker with Ultramet wear surfaces was put or line in June 1976. Ultramet was found to increase the life of belt transfer station surfaces by up to 400 percent and it is hoped that it will do the same for the feeder/breaker. At this time it is still too early to evaluate the performance of the Ultramet unit. If it does improve abrasion resistance, crushing costs could be greatly reduced. White Pine is very pleased with the units and the service provided by Stamler.

This report is volume 10 of an eleven-volume final report for a Grant completed by The Pennsylvania State University for the Bureau of Mines to develop a dynamic general purpose computer simulation model for underground coal mining. The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment. The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation, and ventilation. This volume of the final report describes the Ventilation subsystem of the Master Design Simulator. The Ventilation subsystem has the capabilities to handle: (1) branches in parallel or series, (2) fans in parallel or series, (3) multiple fans, (4) methane, compressed air, or other injections into the system, (5) leakages and fixed quantities, and (6) calculations of absolute pressure at nodes. The program uses the Kirchoff's Junction and mesh laws, and the Hardy-Cross iterative technique to converge to the desired accuracy in solving fox the head quantity. A case study is included in the report illustrating the use of the model. The appendices of the report constitute a user's manual for the Ventilation subsystem, and include a program listing.

"In addition to the usual interpretation that is placed on the words ""thief"" and ""thieves"", the petroleum industry also uses these words when referring to an instrument that is used for taking samples of oil from a tank or reservoir. It is an abbreviation of the term ""thief-tube"". It is desirable in sampling volumes of oil in tanks or reservoirs to obtain samples at different intervals below the surface of the fluid, because of the variation in the character of the oil at different depths. It is for this purpose that the ""thief"" is used.The subject of oil thieves is probably as old as the oil industry itself. Opinions as to which is the most practical instrument for thieving oil in tanks, to obtain a true average sample, differ wherever oil is produced and is analyzed. Every district, and even many of the companies within the district, will have different appliances for ""grabbing"" oil samples. It is interesting to note in passing that though the thief has an apparently insignificant part in the handling of oil, yet the results depending on it are of paramount importance practically every branch of the transportation, refining, and marketing of petroleum. Determinations, particularly dependent on a representative sample, are made by the centrifuge, laboratory distillation tests, and the hydrometer.The purpose of this article is to discuss conditions found in the California fields. Only a general description of types of thieves and the methods of using them will be given. However, it is believed sufficient data are given to enable the reader to form his own opinion as to which of the devices is most practicable under the prevailing conditions. Thieves of all types have their good points, speaking broadly, and it is possible to get good results with any of them, provided they are operated according to instructions and with due care. In work of this kind the advantages or disadvantages reside in the person operating the instrument rather than in the instrument used."

Measurements and analyses were conducted of whole-body vibration aboard seven commercially available passenger and/or recreational vehicles: sedan; sport-utility vehicle (SUV); pickup truck; moving truck; motorcycle; all-terrain vehicle (ATV); and boat. The purpose of the testing was to measure and assess whole-body vibration exposure in a range of typical vehicle environments in order to gain understanding of typical exposure levels characteristic of activities of daily living. Vehicle models tested (and model year) were: Ford Taurus (1995); Jeep Cherokee Sport (2000); Toyota Tundra SR5 (2002); Ford F-350 (1997); Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Classic (2004); Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4; and Steiger Craft Model 21 Montauk. All vehicles were tested with their standard factory-installed seats and were operated under a range of normal operating conditions and speeds typical of intended vehicle use. Methods The measurement, processing, analysis, and exposure assessment methods follow the guidance of generally accepted, national and international consensus standards relevant to the evaluation of whole-body vibration, including ISO 2631-1 [1] and ANSI S3.18 [2]. Seats were instrumented with low-mass triaxial accelerometers mounted in seat pads. Accelerometers used in the test are specified to have flat frequency response over the frequency range of 0.5 to 80 Hz, and all accelerometers were recently calibrated traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Seat pads were installed following guidance in the relevant standards [1, 2], with sensitive axes of the accelerometers following the standard coordinate system with respect to the seated occupant. (The x-axis represents fore-aft motion; the y-axis represents side-to-side motion; and the z-axis represents vertical motion with respect to the occupant.) Vibration data processing and analysis, including filtering, sampling, frequency-weighting, averaging, summation, and determination of basic and additional metrics followed procedures in the relevant standards [1, 2]. Digitized time series data were acquired and stored using a PC-based data acquisition system. Whole-body vibration exposure analyses were conducted via post-processing. During data processing, recorded periods of seat acceleration that were identified and verified as resulting from occupant-induced motion rather than vehicle motion were excluded prior to exposure analysis. Multiple-charged beams originating from a 300-kv ion accelerator are important tools in the study of metal surfaces and thin films. A knowledge of the particle range is necessary for an understanding of the interaction processes of the ions with the targets. Utilizing a theory developed by Lindhard for determining the range of low-energy ions in solids, the ranges of H, He, C, N, 0, and Ar ions in A1203, Al, Fe203, Fe304, CuO, Cu20, Fe, Cu, Sn, and W were calculated for the energy range 60 to 400 kev using a computer program written in BASIC. The range, presented in graphical form, is given in both µg/cm2 and angstroms. In addition, heavy ion ranges were calculated for comparison with published experimental values. For ions with Z > 5, the discrepancy between the calculated values and published experimental values generally ranged from 2 to 40 percent; the largest deviations were probably due to experimental error.

INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at its Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRC) is interested in the application of water mist sprays to extinguish diesel fie1 fires in underground mine diesel refueling areas. To this end experimental studies have been carried out on the extinguishment of diesel fuel fires at PRL's large enclosed fire suppression facility (FSP) at its Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL). Two sizes of shallow fuel pans (3x3 ft and 5x7 ft) contained the fires, and a number of commercial mist spray nozzles (at roof locations) and spray/fire locations were tested (52 fires in all). Visual observations of the pool fire extinguishment process by the overhead sprays with an infra-red sensitive videocom suggests that there are two distinct actions involved in extinguishment due to two different transport mechanisms by which the water droplets can enter the fire plume. First, is a direct injection of water droplets into the plume from overhead. This is believed to involve larger water drops and leads to an extinguishment time of several minutes. Second, is an indirect injection process involving small water drops which are entrained in the sideways air flow that feeds oxygen to the fire. This second process apparently leads to relatively fast quenching of the fire in less than 1 minute - a highly useful attribute for a fire protection system. This paper describes a relatively simple parametric model for the indirect water injection process, and defines the critical spray conditions for achieving rapid quenching of the pool fire. While the model is consistent with the pool fire data obtained to date, the PRL studies are continuing with more complex pool fire scenarios. It remains to be seen if this simple parametric approach applies to these future fire tests. THEORETICAL Critical Drop Size In the two-dimensional representation of figure I, an oil pool fire is considered to be a cone whose base is the vaporizing liquid oil surface having an area n?, above which exists a fire plume diffusion flame) of height, L. The rising plume induces a horizontal air flow into the side of the plume supplying the oxygen necessary for propagating gas phase combustion reactions. Water droplets suspended in the air around the plume will tend to follow the horizontal air flows into the plume. "Filter samplers are one of the simplest methods and, in some instances, one of the only methods that can be use to obtain samples of particulate matter suspended in a gaseous medium. Once collected, particles are normally analyzed directly on the filter by gravimetric, chemical or microscopic techniques. However, it is sometimes desirable to resuspend the particles in an airstream for analysis. This would be the case if the size distribution of the particles were to be measured using one of many particle sizing techniques such as inertial classifiers, optical particle counters or the TSI Aerodynamic Particle Sizer CAPS).A ·technique has been recently developed whereby one can resuspend particles from filter samples in an airstream. The technique has been used for the resuspension of coal dust from filters. The resuspended particles were then introduced into the APS. This development was necessary since an APS can not be taken directly into an underground coal mine. For this application, particle samples are collected on membrane filters in the underground mines. The mass concentration of the particles determined through gravimetric analysis. The particle size distribution was tl1en determined by resuspending the particles and passing them through a TSI Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS). Excellent agreement has been obtained between the size distribution directly measured underground with a cascade impactor and that measured from the resuspended particles. For this experiment, an open-faced filter sampler was placed adjacent to the cascade impactor in the n1ine. The particles collected on the filter were resuspended in the laboratory and Measured with the APS.A venturi aspirator is used in the apparatus developed for resuspending the particles. The venturi has a small diameter capillary tube placed in the venturi throat. High velocity air flow is passed through the venturi, thereby, creating a low pressure region at the exit of the capillary tube. The low pressure draws air through the tube. The filter with deposited particles is located at the inlet to the capillary tube where the air flow into the capillary resuspend the particles. Once airborne, the particles are deagglomerated as they pass through the high velocity air flow in the venturi throat."

Solvent extraction has become important in recent years as a unit process in extractive metallurgy. The flexibility and simplicity of the technique have attracted widespread attention, and numerous papers describing actual and projected metallurgical applications have been published. However, differences in terminology, procedure, objectives, and standards, as reflected in reports by different operators and investigators, have sometimes made appraisals and comparisons difficult. Consequently, a need appeared for n series of basic reports on the subject. This Bureau of Mines Information Circular is the first of such a series. It deals with the status of solvent extraction in metallurgy, as well as with the rudiments and terminology of the unit operation. In analytical chemistry, extraction of molecular species from aqueous media by immiscible organic solvents has been used for many years to separate and determine chemical elements (61).4 Complex chlorides of iron and other metals are readily soluble in ethers and ketones, as are the nitrates of uranium and thorium. Most metals are extractable as complex salts of some organic reagent, such as dithizone, 8-hydroxyquinoline, or cupferron.

"Transportation of explosives in mines is extremely hazardous, and where electric haulage is employed the danger is intensified. Insulated mine-car couplings have been adopted by at least five companies in Alabama and Pennsylvania - and undoubtedly in other States - to prevent an electric current passing from a mine locomotive to a car or between care joined by this coupling. The need for such protection is recognized in the report of an explosion.""Four hundred kegs of black blasting powder had been loaded into four mine cars at the railroad, to be hauled to the magazine, upgrade, by a trolley locomotive. On starting, the motorman put sand on the rail and a grounded circuit passed through the hitchings and so exploded the powder. No insulation was used between the locomotive and cars."" When used on man trips the insulated coupling further serves the purpose of guarding the men against shock. Four couplings are described so that a clearer understanding may be obtained of the details of construction.ConstructionThe general principles of construction are similar in all insulated couplings. The piece containing the hole for the coupling pin is made of steel and the steel parts are separated by an insulating material, such as fiber or wood. The coupling is either rigid or semirigid to prevent the bumpers of the mine cars from coming in contact and to keep the cars insulated from one another at all times."

In 1989, Alabama's nonfuel mineral industry produced a State record of $463 million of nonfuel mineral commodities, an increase of $4 million over that reported by the State's mineral producers in 1988. The new record marked the fourth consecutive year in which mineral production increased over that of the previous year. Alabama ranked 22d among the States in total mineral value. Cement, stone, and sand and gravel were the three leading mineral commodities produced, accounting for 77% of Alabama's total mineral value. During the year, there were several acquisitions by Alabama cement and stone companies, and the only tantalum mine in the United States completed its first full year of operation.

A deposit 10 mi (16 km) southwest of the area contains copper and silver minerals in the Triassic Wild Sheep Creek Formation which probably underlies basalt lava flows covering the study area. INTRODUCTION Location and Access The Sheep Divide RARE II area [10 mi (16 km) west of the Snake River] encompasses 7,100 acres (2,800 ha) of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. Enterprise, Oregon, is located 23 air mi (37 (m) west of the area. Peripheral access is provided by the highway from Joseph to the community of Imnaha, Oregon, then south to the study area by the graveled Upper Imnaha Road (fig. 1).

Frictional ignitions are defined as the ignition of a flammable mixture of methane and air that is initiated by frictional heating. Ignitions created through the addition of energy from open flames and exposed electrical circuits are not included in this analysis. Energy released in a roof fall that creates a spark and ignites a methane mixture would be considered a frictional ignition. Frictional ignitions represent the majority of all ignitions in underground coal mines. Over the study period of 1983 to 2005, a total of 1993 ignitions were reported in underground bituminous coal mines in the United States, of which 1589 were frictional ignitions. Reportable ignitions to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are any unintentional occurrences of flame underground regardless of duration. Frictional ignitions were reported in 155 mines and 13 states. Continuous miners represented the largest source for frictional ignitions with 1090 (68.6% of all frictional ignitions). Longwall mining operations represented the highest concentration of frictional ignitions during this study period with 1365 frictional ignitions (85.9% of all frictional ignitions). The 17 mines with the most frictional ignitions were all longwall mining operations and had 1130 frictional ignitions (307 from the shearer) that represented 71.1% of the total. In 1983, mines with frictional ignitions represented 6.9% of operating underground mines and 36.6% of total underground coal production. The percentage of operating underground mines with frictional ignitions and their total production has increased steadily and in 2005 represented 9.8% of active mines and 46.2% of underground coal production. The three coalbeds with the highest number of frictional ignitions (Blue Creek, Pittsburgh No 8, and Pocahontas No 3) had 1049 ignitions that represented 66.0% of all frictional ignitions. The three states with the highest number of frictional ignitions were Alabama (710), Virginia (247), and Pennsylvania (242) that represented 75.5% of the total. Frictional ignitions peaked in 1991 with a high of 114. In 2005, only 34 frictional ignitions were reported. If only frictional ignitions that occur at the face are considered, there have been no fatalities since 1983. Since this time, there were 33 ignitions that caused 53 workers to lose a total of 2912 working days. When including ground falls, then there have been four frictional ignitions with one incident causing two fatalities and injuring eight workers. From 1983-1991, underground productivity and the number of frictional ignitions increased. However, productivity continued to increase from 1991-2000 while total frictional ignitions fell, thereby disproving this connection between productivity and frequency of frictional ignitions. Ninety percent of all frictional ignitions occurred in underground coal mines that liberated more than 393 L/s (1.2 MMcfd million cubic feet per day) of methane through the main ventilation system. Although methane production is not the determining factor for the occurrence of frictional ignitions, it is a good indicator of the anticipated frequency.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of gamma radiation on materials and chemical reactions to obtain information that could be of value in modern metallurgical practices . Various combinations of metals and their ores and compounds were irradiated in attempts to effect reactions that might be applicable in the extraction and separation of metal values from minerals and The types of reactions studied included complexing of salts , decomposition of hydrated salts , metal chlorination reactions , leaching of ores and minerals , halogen exchange , and various reducing reactions . All irradiations were performed at the Materials Testing Reactor Gamma Facility of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission at Idaho Falls , Idaho . Spent fuel elements were utilized as the source of the gamma radiation . Some irradiation - induced changes , ranging from mere color change to participation in chemical reactions , were noted . The greatest value of these investigations , however , was the experience acquired , which should be valuable in future explorations of similar nature .

This Bureau of Mines publication is a literature study of the problem of spontaneous oxidation and combustion of sulfides in underground mines. It summarizes the present-day hazards, process mechanisms, and prevention and control techniques of this growing problem in underground mines. The iron sulfides generally have the greatest tendency to oxidize, particularly pyrrhotite. The presence of moisture and oxygen is essential for the oxidation reaction. Highly fractured sulfides, when found with timber or combustible refuse in slowly circulating air, pose the most serious fire hazard. Quenching with water is effective in quickly dealing with local hot spots, but ventilation at high flaw rates is the most effective and economical means for long-term prevention and control.

Ground, air, and water vehicles can expose humans to substantial multi-axis vibration. Multiple input/multiple output relationships or models exist for estimating frequency response functions of linear systems1, 2. These relationships have been applied by some investigators to evaluate the effects of occupied seat vibration3, 4. Using a multiple input/single output model, this study investigated the effects of single- and combined-axis vibration in the fore-and-aft (X), lateral (Y), and vertical (Z) directions on vibration transmission to the human chest. Frequency response functions (transmissibilities) were estimated and compared for the back-on and back-off postures. Methods A rigid seat with seat back was mounted onto the Six Degree-of-Freedom Motion Simulator (SIXMODE). A flat acceleration vibration signal was generated between 2 and 40 Hz at 1.0 ms-2 rms in the single and combined X, Y, Z, XY, XZ, YZ, and XYZ axes. The signals were shifted in time so that the combined inputs were not fully correlated. Lightweight triaxial accelerometers were used to measure accelerations at the seat base (input) and at the bony manubrium of the chest (output). The maximum of nine frequency response functions (H(?)) or transmissibilities were estimated from the auto- and cross-spectra. The system transfer matrix for the XYZ inputs and chest Z output is [ ] where PxZ, PyZ, and PzZ are the cross-spectra between the three inputs at the seat base and the Z output at the chest, respectively, and Pxx, Pxy,…zz are the auto- and cross-spectra between the input signals (? not shown in Eq. 1). Equation 1 can be similarly written for the chest X and Y outputs. Matlab® was used to estimate the auto- and cross-spectral densities for calculating the transmissibilities, ordinary coherences (for single inputs), partial coherences, and multiple coherences. Results Figure 1 illustrates the major chest transmissibilities observed for the two postures. Vertical vibration showed a consistent influence on the chest X response (Chest X/Z), most likely causing chest pitch. Some chest Z responses were observed with X-axis inputs, but the results were variable and difficult to interpret. In general, other factors besides the known inputs did not affect the transmissibilities shown in Figure 1 (Repeated Measures ANOVA, P<0.05). This was

The first steps in combating a dust problem are to take dust samples to pinpoint the source, check the ventilation system, and check the dust collector. If the ventilation system and dust collector are operating properly, then other dust controls such as water sprays and conveyor belt scrapers must be upgraded. For tunnels in the design stage, recommended air quantities are provided. FINDING THE DUST SOURCE AND LOOKING FOR VENTILATION MALFUNCTIONS [The first steps in fighting a dust problem are to take dust samples to pinpoint the source, check the ventilation system, and check the dust collector. Without knowing the exact source, efforts to reduce dust are hit-and-miss (mostly miss).] Taking samples to pinpoint the dust source. In tunnels with high levels of airborne dust, the first task is to pinpoint where the dust enters the airstream. Most dust originates from rock breakage at the tunnel face, but the location where this dust enters the airstream can vary. Dust can leak from behind the TBM face shield, from gaps in the ventilation duct, or from a mal-functioning dust collector. It can be entrained into the air from the muck on a moving conveyor belt. It can even be shaken loose from the underside of the belt as it passes over the idlers. As a start, to locate the dust source, dust samples and air quantity measurements should be taken at the following locations:

RECORD production of portland cement, crushed limestone, marble, lime, and clays highlighted the mineral industry of Alabama in 1959. Among the States, Alabama ranked second in production of bauxite, and third in output of iron ore, scrap mica, and native asphalt. Alabama&apos;s mineral industry was dominated by the mining and processing of coal and iron ore, which accounted for 51 percent of the total value of production in 1958 and 1959. Other important industries were cement manufacturing, petroleum, and stone quarrying. Leading companies were Tennessee Coal & Iron Division of United States Steel Corp. Provide better ventilation for mines by reducing air leakage around stoppings. Approach Most stoppings are constructed of concrete blocks and trowelled-on mortar and are not very airtight. Bureau of Mines research has shown that brushing on modified mortar containing fiberglass and/or other additives, that enhance strength and adhesion, minimizes air leakage around and through the stoppings. Airtightness is an important factor in building stoppings since an airtight stopping will provide for more efficient ventilation airflow and more cost-efficient use of the mine&apos;s ventilation system.
