The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on many topics relating to the mineral resources of the United States. This is done to ensure an adequate supply of minerals essential to a viable domestic industry and a sound economy. The United States is almost totally dependent on foreign supplies for a number of minerals such as chromium, niobium, tantalum, and manganese for which there is no available substitute, while many other minerals such as titanium are abundantly distributed throughout the earth but seldom occur in adequate concentrations or useful forms. This report describes an example of a small but high-grade occurrence of titanium are in Nelson County, VA. This occurrence could be exploited under favorable economic conditions with new mining technology such as borehole slurry mining. The report demonstrates that the dikes at titanium ore, a mixture of ilmenite and apatite locally termed nelsonite, can be detected and traced along strike using magnetometer traverses. This information will aid in the selection of appropriate slurry borehole mining test sites in the area.

The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced series of advance toward the Bureau's overall goal of providing the systems technology required to create a more healthful and safer working environment for the Nation's mining and minerals processing workersINTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines conducts a balanced, continuing in-house research and development program to accelerate systematic improvements in health and safety conditions in U.S. mines. Part I of this report outlines the Bureau's present in-house effort to all interested parties; in particular, potential contractors can refer to it when submitting USP's (unsolicited proposals), thus avoiding proposing research that duplicates work being performed by the Bureau.It is the policy of the Bureau of Mines to utilize as fully as possible the capabilities of the private sector in minerals research, and to that endPart II of this report outlines the Bureau's current projected contract research needs.The projects presented were planned at the beginning of the fiscal year and are subject to change based on emerging priorities and availability of funds. Contingencies may require that a significant portion of the program be deferred into fiscal year 1983 (FY 83) or beyond. This paper describing the mining practice at the Harmony mine, Baker, daho, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. About 150 tons of copper ore containing 4 per cent copper, 0.001 ounce gold, and 0.1 ounce silver, is being produced daily from the Harmony mine by the shrinkage method of mining. The ore is taken by an aerial tramway 1/3 mile long to the mill, where it is concentrated. The concentrate is shipped 8 miles by truck to the railroad and thence by rail to Utah for smelting.

"Introduction of diesel engines in underground mines may generate severe health hazards associated with exhaust contaminants. One of the most important parameter in determining the optimal air quantity for hazard reduction is the exhaust dispersion. Through analyzing the exact solution of the diffusion equation and its approximation by finite difference method(FDM) , this paper aims at doing a fundamental research to find an efficient dispersion model suitable to the domestic mines. Diffusion coefficients are likely to be small in the underground airways with high ventilation resistance. This makes concentration profiles similar to the convection-based step functions. It is the case for fixed as well as moving engines. Concentration estimation by exact solution is almost impossible in the case of either a single engine moving at a variable speed or the existence of multiple engines. Application of FDM to the diffusion equation including turbulent dispersion results in the various problems; unstable concentration profiles depending on the engine location, nuctuating concentrations near the engine, and overestimation of the dispersion region of which error grows with waning diffusion coefficient.Convection-based dispersion model is found to fit well for dynamic simulation of exhaust dispersion from multiple diesel engines in the airways showing low diffusion coefficients. Its suitability is more likely in the regions with frequent equipment passage. Published"

Develop a dry dust collector suitable for working faces and belt transfer paints. Approach A filter cartridge with a reverse-pulse, self-cleaning system has been mounted in-to a low profile unit requiring electric power only. How It Works Dust-laden air entering the in-let end of the collector passes through the two inline filter elements. When the elements load to a pre-selected pres-sure drop, they are automatically pulse-cleaned by a "backflush" method using compressed air. When the elements are pulse-cleaned, caked dust material on the filter surface is released, and falls away as lumps. Dust is removed from the collector by an auger mechanism. Features of the collector are: (1) unit is completely self-contained, (2) built-in air compressor for pulse-cleaning, (3) cleaning cycle initiates automatically at a preset restriction, (4) automatic auger discharge of collected dust, (5) detachable extension auger for transporting collected dust, (6) "dust leak" indicator light, and (7) "change filter element II warning light. The collector has been designed as permissible although approval has not yet been granted.

The Bureau of Mines, at the request of local authorities in Rock Springs, Wyo., investigated and conducted through contracts a multistage program of exploratory drilling and pumped-slurry backfilling of 15 areas of potential subsidence in abandoned mine workings underneath that community. Initially, the Bureau in 1969 had recommended a program of gravity blind flushing of some of the inaccessible mine voids, and in 1970 a new technique, the pumped-slurry injection process, was tested for the first time in a site adjacent to the city's area of severe surface subsidence. Success of this initial testing program, and of a large-scale project in Scranton, Pa., led to further large- scale projects, funded by Congress, that resulted in the successful back- filling not only of all 15 target areas of potential subsidence in Rock Springs, but also of several areas in other States. Total cost of the projects in Rock Springs, including the original pumped-slurry test, was $3,243,993. A total of about 923,000 tons of sand was injected hydraulically into mine voids, rendering 178 acres of residential and central-downtown areas of Rock Springs less susceptible to subsidence damage. The pumped-slurry method was proved to be much superior to the gravity blind flushing method in term of the amount of solids that could be injected underground through a single borehole. However, there are special conditions that make this technique more or less applicable in different areas or underground configurations, as noted in the report's conclusions.

This Bureau of Mines report describes photo lineaments obtained from stereoscopic examination of vertical aerial photographs and by the Ronchi grating study of aerial photoindex sheets. The photolineaments are compared with the trends of oriented fracture systems procured by measuring the compass direction of joints in bedrock. The relative reliability of the methods is shown, and the results are presented in graphical, tabular, and written form. Analyses of field measurements of strikes of bedrock joints in the project area indicate for the most part two intersecting sets of major joints oriented N 76° W -N 15° E, and N 57° W -N 27° E. The analyses of lineaments determined by stereoscopic examination of aerial photographs show dominant trends of lineament zones of weakness to be an average of N 65° W -N 20° E. Analysis of lineaments found by Ronchi grid viewing of aerial photoindex sheets indicate dominant trends of N 70° W -N 27° E. The three methods give similar findings and verify the work of previous authors. The Ronchi grid method is a useful guide, but it cannot be substituted for the two more painstaking methods.

Mullite is a substance of prime importance in ceramic technology . Despite this fact , its thermodynamic properties have received little attention . A Bureau of Mines literature survey disclosed the absence of lowtemperature heat capacity data , the absence of an experimental entropy value for 298.15 ° K , and the lack of heat content data beyond the temperature range from 298° to 576 ° K. Data supplied in this Bureau report fill these gaps in the thermodynamic knowledge of mullite . According to equilibrium phase studies of Aramaki and Roy ,3 the mullite phase melts congruently at 2,123 ± 15 ° K , and the equilibrium crystallinephase composition extends from Al Si2013 to Al6.8 Si₂ Q4.2 . The results in this report are for the stoichiometric composition , Al Si¿Qз . • Heat capacity measurements were made over the temperature range from 50 ° to 298 ° K , and the entropy at 298.15 ° K was evaluated . Researchers at the Bureau of Mines have developed a technique for re- generating chromic acid-sulfuric acid etching solutions used in metal surface treatment operations. The technique utilizes a diaphragm cell equipped with a cation-selective membrane to oxidize cr3+ to cr6+ at the anode and to remove copper, the major metallic contaminant, at the cathode. Normally, spent etchant is discarded after approximately 3 days of use. Using the electrolytic cell, the etchant can be used for a year without replacement, From data obtained from industrial-scale cells, the installation of a regeneration cell with a 1,000-gal catholyte- holding tank has been estimated to save at least $240 per day, The payback period for the investment is estimated to be about 10 mo or less. Because the magnitude of these cost savings will vary at different locations, several graphs are presented to aid in calculating payback for a specific site. Using these graphs and the capital costs presented in this study, the payback period can be determined for installing a regeneration cell with a 500- or a 1,000-gal catholyte-holding tank in an existing surface treatment plant.

"This paper is the outcome of thorough investigation into the value of the previous methods used for deriving production decline curves. It is highly important that methods be employed that are fundamentally sound and also practicably applicable. Six methods commonly used were studied. Some of these were found to be fundamentally in error; some save reliable curves but involved much work and time in the preparation; others gave reliable curves with less time and effort.It was found that of the methods previously employed the ""family curve"" method described in Bull. 134 Amer. Inst. Feb. 1918, pp. 499-500 by Lewis and Beal, was probably the most satisfactory. The now method given in this paper ploys the same principles as the ""family curve"" method, but is mathematical instead of graphical,The engineer and the oil man should carefully boar in mind both the use and the limitations of the average production curve such as is derived by the ""family curve"" method or other methods mentioned. Estimations of future productions or of underground oil reserves of a particular tract or well should be made from the production records of the tract or the well itself wherever such records are satisfactory. The use of the average curve of a district or field should be applied only to those properties or wells where there are not sufficient data to construct individual or tract production records, or where the productive life so short that a satisfactory individual record can not be obtained."

INJURY and employment figures for nonmetal mines and mills in 1959 are presented in this publication. Data for nonmetal mines are presented separately from those for nonmetal mills. The Bureau of Mines is authorized to send questionnaires to the nonmetal mining industry each year requesting their voluntary submission of injury experience and employment data. The voluntary response to these requests has contributed greatly toward the promotion of safety in the industry, and every effort has been made to make the information as complete as possible.

A belt-wearable self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) manufactured by the CSE Corp. and designated the "SR-1OO" was evaluated for safety in the underground mine environment by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The evaluation consisted of laboratory tests on the chemicals contained in the unit and field trials to simulate the mine environment. This report summarizes the test results and compares the results with those from earlier tests with chemical and compressed oxygen self-rescuers. It was concluded that the new SCSR did not pose any different or more severe hazards than the earlier units. In view of the mine-proven safety record of the SCSR's now in service, no reason could be found to disallow use of the belt-wearable unit.

The wetting of coal dust by aqueous solutions of surface active agents (surfactants) has been studied. Selected for study were thirty coals and typical surfactants selected from the typical classes of anionic, non ionic and cationics. Of these three classes the practical use of cationics in aqueous solutions has been eliminated due to the inherent negative Zeta potential charge of the representative coals studied. The wetting of the coals has been examined by column flow, contact angle, and settling rate measurements. Results indicated that both anionic and nonionic surfactants are to be considered viable for use; low critical micelle concentration values are also preferred for the surfactants. Study of native waters showed substantial variation in properties, i.e., pH, calcium ion concentration, and conductance. pH variations were also noted to affect the effectiveness of selected surfactants. Combinations of nonionic and anionic surfactants have, in certain instances, produced synergistic enhancement in the coal wetting superior to the effectiveness of each surfactant alone.

In connection with its investigation looking to the prevention of waste and the increase of safety and efficiency in the mineral indus- tries the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a study of the possible uses of the electric furnace in metallurgy. This bulletin presents a com- pilation of such data as seem to be useful for the information of persons who may be interested in the matter. In the application of electricity to metallurgy three kinds of processes are involved, namely, mechanical, thermal, and electrolytic. Under the mechanical application of electricity come those proc- esses of dressing and concentrating ores that are known as either electrostatic or electromagnetic processes. In electrothermic processes the current is used as a source of heat. The fundamental differences between the various types of electric furnace that are at present in commercial use relate to the manner in which the electric current is applied, as may be noted by reference to that part of this report in which the subject is discussed. In electrolytic processes the electric current is used for depositing metals from solutions. The process may be conducted in one of the following ways: (1) The material to be treated may be put into solu- tion and then electrolyzed, the material thus treated forming the electrolyte; (2) the material to be treated may form the anode or be placed in contact with the anode; or (3) the material to be treated may form the cathode or be placed in contact with the cathode. This report treats of electrothermic processes, with the possible exception of those for the reduction of aluminum from its ores. Moreover, of the processes used in the so-called electrochemical in- dustries only those for the reduction of an ore to metal, or to a com- pound of the metal that is of value in itself, or is an aid in metallurgical work, are here discussed.

"INTRODUCTION During peacetime, the United States uses less than 3,000 tons of chemical-grade celestite annually. The war need, however, was estimated to exceed 15,000 tons a year.Hitherto; most of the required chemical-grade ore has been imported from England, Mexico, and other foreign countries. If foreign sources do not find it possible to meet the demand for ore of chemical grade (plus 92 percent SrSO4), it is expected that requirements could be satisfied by concentrating low-grade domestic ores. Celestite deposits on Brown, Nolan, Fisher, and Coke Counties, Texas, are considered to be possible sources of supply for this low-grade material. The Bureau of Mines explored the most important deposits to determine the grade and amount of ore available and conducted ore-dressing tests to obtain a suitable method of concentration.The exploratory work, consisting of test pitting and sampling, was carried on under the direction of W. E. Dennis, one of the authors of this paper, from October 8, 1942, to January 30, 1943. The ore dressing-tests described herein were conducted at the Bureau of Mines Laboratory at Rolla Mo.In this report, a particular deposit is referred to by the name of the landowner on whose .property the .deposit lies. The location of the deposits investigated is shown on figures 1, 2, 3, and 4.The celestite deposits were previously studied by the Bureau of Economic Geology of the University of Texas, and the results of its investigation are published in Mineral Survey Circular No. 46."

As part of a joint U.S. Atomic Energy Commission-Federal Bureau of Mines program for using nuclear energy to supply process heat, a simulated nuclear loop has been constructed to test components. This loop has been operated for more than 1,800 hours at 100 p.s.i.g. Of this period, 23 hours were at 2,500° F. and higher; 540 at 2,000° to 2,500° F.; 840 at 1,500° to 2,000° F.; 200 at 1,000° to 1,500° F.; and 260 below 1,000° F. Leakage at flanges and welds was not a serious problem. A helium-recycle system with gas temperatures of 2,300° to 2,500° F. and a static pressure of 250 p.s.i.g. appears feasible. Difficulties were encountered with the recycle compressor due to thermal distortion of the impeller and shaft. The use of sealed bearings limits compressor operation to the life of the bearings.

Cooperation between the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior and the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain dates from 1924. It has been intimate and has involved exchange of personnel and. equipment as well as information. Correlation of divergent results obtained in large-scale tests of the explosibility3/ of coal dusts made in the respective countries was one of the first problems to be studied. The purpose of this paper is to show to what extent such correlation has been achieved. COMPARISON OF TEST METHODS The first research accomplished Jointly by the two organizations was a comparison of large-scale methods of determining the explosibility of coal dust.
