The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) was first presented at this Conference nine years ago. Since its introduction, the CMRR has been incorporated into many aspects of mine planning, including longwall pillar design, roof support selection, feasibility studies, and extended cut evaluation. It has also become truly international, with involvement in mine designs and funded research projects in South Africa, Canada, and Australia. The purpose of this paper is to bring the mining community up to date with recent improvements and applications of the CMRR. The most important new development is a streamlined process for determining the CMRR from exploratory drill core. Just three types of information are now required: •Fracture spacing (or RQD) •Uniaxial compressive strength (or axial Point Load Testing) •Diametral Point Load Testing The moisture sensitivity adjustment has also been changed, and new research has related the immersion test to slake durability. Most recently, the CMRR has been implemented in a computer program, which can be obtained from NIOSH free of charge. The program facilitates calculation of the CMRR from either underground or drill core data. Values from many locations can be saved in a single file, and an interface with Autocad allows CMRR contour plots to be integrated into mine planning.

The other South Pacific islands included in this chapter extend from Papua New Guinea, east of the Indonesian Province of Irian Jaya on the island of New Guinea, to Fiji, straddling the 180° meridian. A number of islands have been omitted from this chapter owing to the fact that their only mineral production remained insignificant to the economy of the respective country or territory. These islands include the French overseas territories of French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna Islands; the independent states of Kiribati, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu; the New Zealand freely associated state of the Cook Islands; and the New Zealand dependency of Niue. The mineral production that did exist in these islands was limited to construction materials such as coral reef limestone, crushed stone, and sand and gravel in minor quantities used solely for domestic consumption. FIJI Fiji, an archipelago in Melanesia consisting of 300 islands ranging from tiny coral atolls, cays, and rugged coral limestone islets to the larger mountainous, volcanic islands of Kadavu, Taveuni, Vanua Levu, and Viti Levu, straddles the 180° meridian about 1,800 kilometers south of the Equator. Fiji has been an independent member of the British Commonwealth of Nations since October 10, 1970.

The Tallapoosa Copper mine in Haralson County, Ga., has been operated, or under development at various times since before the Civil War. The geology of the deposit is similar to that of many of the pyrite deposits occurring in the belt of ancient crystalline and metamorphic rocks that extends diagonally northeast-southwest across the State. The Bureau of Mines, in its program of investigation of, strategic mineral deposits, diamond-drilled four holes totaling 1,570.3 feet at the deposit during the period June to September 1947 to verify the old drill records and the continuation of the deposit at depth.

Domestic Production.-Domestic production of white arsenic, AS,03, was derived entirely as a byproduct of smelting arsenic-containing copper ores by The Anaconda Company at Anaconda, Mont., and American Smelting and Refining Company at Tacoma, Wash. The Anaconda Company discontinued production of white arsenic in 1965. Arsenic metal was not produced. Consumption and Uses.-Most of the white arsenic produced in 1965 was consumed in manufacturing lead and calcium arsenate insecticides.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations In the United States was made In accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items Is confidential. 1t presents analytical data for 4, 802 samples, representing the products of 117 companies. The samples were collected during December 1954 and January and February 1955. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered 6y this survey Include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation, A list of the National Motor-Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

This report reviews the regulatory environment as it pertains to tailings management and disposal from mining operations, excluding coal and placer gold operations, in the state of Alaska. It is based on the EPA's staff position on an effective program to regulate mining wastes as presented in the May, 1990 Strawman II document, The unique conditions which occur in parts of the state, including a fragile environment, high seismicity and permafrost, are identified. The special waste management practices which are necessitated by these conditions are delineated. The report provides a detailed outline of the current technologies that are suitable for designing, constructing, operating and closing a railings disposal facility to meet environmental protection objectives. Cost implications to the mining industry of potential regulatory actions, such as the degree of groundwater protection are examined.

Bureau of Mines routine crude-oil analyses of 88 samples from 60 fields are presented in this report. Similar analyses from other fields in California have been published in previous reports listed in the appendix, page 52. Yearly production of crude oil in California and the percentage of United States production represented by California production for 1948-54 are given in table 1. [ ] Analyses in this report are of samples from the fields listed in table 2, with production data for 1953, cumulative production through 1953, and year of discovery of each field. Information regarding the source and general characteristics of the samples is included in table 3 with a summary of analytical and computed data.

The feasibility of locating a buried vertical magnetic dipole source (horizontal loop) from surface measurements of the vertical and horizontal magnetic field components has been investigated by Wait (1971). , For sufficiently low frequencies, the magnetic fields have a simple static-like behavior, and a single observation of the ratio and relative phases of the vertical and horizontal field components is sufficient for location when the earth is homogeneous. However, when inhomogenieties are present, the surface fields will be modified, and source location may be more difficult. In order to obtain a quantitative idea of the surface field modifications, we consider a spherical conducting zone as a perturbation to the homo- geneous half-space. A rigorous solution for the buried sphere problem has been formulated by D'Yakanov (1959). Unfortunately, his solution is restricted to azimuthally symmetric excitation, and even then the solution is not in a convenient computational form. However, if the sphere is electrically small and is located at a sufficient distance from both the dipole source and the interface, the scattered fields can be identified as the secondary fields of induced dipole moments. The latter are equal to the product of the incident fields and the polarizabilities of the sphere. The details of the approach are given by Hill and Wait (1973). Wait (1968) has used this induced dipole moment approach for scattering by a small sphere above a conducting half-space. The method has the advantage that it is easily generalized to scatterers of other shapes for which both the electric and magnetic polarizabilities are known, such as spheroids (Van de Hulst, 1957). The Bureau of Mines started a continuing program to investigate and evaluate analytical techniques to assist governmental agencies to select simple, rapid, reliable methods for crude oil spill identification. Six crude oil samples were analyzed to evaluate gas-liquid chromatography, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, infrared spectoscopy, sulfur and nitrogren determinations, mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and ultraviolet spectrophotometry. Samples were studied from the following selected fields: El Morgan, Egypt; Duri, Indonesia; Minagish, Kuwait; Bachaquero, Venezuela; Gach Saran, Iran; and Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. These samples were chosen to represent high-production fields that are likely to be involved in oceanic transport. Over 50 years of Bureau of Mines analytical research on petroleum served as the basis for evaluation of the experimental results to determine which of the methods are effective techniques to identify crude oil spills. Gas-liquid chromatographic analysis, atomic absorption spectrophotometric analysis, and sulfur-nitrogen determinations are recommended as the most useful of the techniques investigated.

[The principle of the application of electrolytes for deflocculation of fine materials in order that impurities may settle out, and the subsequent flocculation of the suspended particles by a different reagent, is well known and has been applied successfully to clays. Flocculation is also applied with success to ore slimes. Thus certain electrolytes, particularly alkalies added to a suspension of colloidal particles cause deflocculation so that, suspension may be-maintained indefinitely. The addition of bother electrolytes particularly acids, on the contrary produce's flocculation and the articles produce's are rapidly precipitated from suspension leaving a clear liquid above: the precipitated mass. Salts of trivalent elements such as aluminum act similarly. Due to its cheapness the double sulphate of aluminum and potassium, ordinary alum, has been used extensively for treating clays. These properties of electrolytes. and. their utilization in the commercial: preparation of clays have been described in publications of the Bureau of Mines.2]

This report describes the development and underground operation of a semi-automatic, raise climber, Man and Supply Hoist System designed for stope access in underground metal and nonmetal mines. Demonstrated capabilities of the system include a 4000-lb payload capacity, control from the traveling cage and from up to five remote stations, operating in vertical or inclined raises 5 ft in diameter and up to 300 ft in length and a travel speed of 50 ft/min. The 'system has the capability of operating in crooked raises because the conveyance climbs two stationary wire ropes suspended down the raise. The drive unit is electrically powered with power and control signals supplied to the drive unit through an armored cable also suspended down the raise. The system has been designed for portability, ease of installation and minimum raise development. The system can be installed by two men in five shifts. The hoist has been demonstrated successfully in two underground applications. The first demonstration was in a 5-ft diam, 60 deg inclined raise over a 2-month period. The second demonstration utilized a vertical 5-ft diam borehole to access a blast-hole stoping area. The system successfully provided two shift-a-day service over a 7-month duration demonstration. This report provides a detailed description of the hoist design and its demonstrated performance in two mine applications.

"Crude oils are capable of dissolving quantities of gas under pressure. This fact has been known for some time, but questions have arisen as to the effects of gas in solution upon the characteristics of the oil. Previous investigations4 show that gas in solution in an oil affects the viscosity and surface tension of the oil, but the effects on the volume and A. P. I. gravity of the oil have not been known. The results given in this report show that there is a decided change both in volume and in the A. P. I. gravity of the oil due to the solution of the gas in the oil under pressure. As gas is dissolved, the volume of the oil and the A. P. I. gravity increase. The converse of this phenomenon is also true: if the gas is released from a saturated oil, there is a shrinkage in volume and a decrease in A.P.I. gravity due to the release of gas from solution. However, various oils show marked tendencies to retain a portion of the dissolved gas upon releasing the pressure to that of the atmosphere. This retained gas has an appreciable effect on the volume and A. P. I. gravity of the oil because the oil does not resume its initial volume or gravity while it retains dissolved gas. In a sense the oil has been ""freshened"" and will not return to its original or weathered volume until it loses some of the lighter fractions. Wiggins5 has shown that a fresh oil decreases both in volume and in gravity because of the weathering of the lighter fractions while the oil is standing in storage tanks.This paper includes data attained during the determination of volume and gravity correction factors to be applied in the oil recovery investigations of the Bureau of Mines. Three oils having a wide range in gravity were used in determining the correction factors. These oils were from the Bartlesville-Dewey field, Oklahoma, the Seminole field, Oklahoma, and the Inglewood field, California. The same gas that was used in the oil recovery experiments was used throughout this investigation. Determinations were made of the volume and A.P.I. gravity increases resulting from the gas going into solution at 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1,000 pounds pressure; also the increases in the volume and gravity of the oil due to retained gas were determined after the dissolved gas was liberated from solution by releasing the pressure to that of the atmosphere.Samples of residual and liberated gas were taken throughout the investigation in order to study the selective absorption and selective retention by the oil of the various constituents of the gas. The analyses of these gas samples showed that there was selective absorption and selective retention of the constituents of the gas. The tests on Inglewood crude gave the most pronounced example of selective absorption and selective retention of the gas.All of the tests were conducted at a constant temperature of 709F."

The value of nonfuel raw mineral production in the United States for 1977 increased over that of 1976 by 5%, from $16.7 billion to $17.5 billion. Metals declined by 5% from $6.1 billion to $5.8 billion, chiefly because of strikes in the iron ore industry and a depressed copper market. Subsidization of mining industries in some foreign countries accounted in part for the excess of copper and some other metals on world markets. Weak metal markets and continued slowdowns in the world economy were the main reasons of the virtual absence of new mine projects. Increasing domestic governmental involvement affecting mineral industry activities, such as pricing controls, public land withdrawals, and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, effective August 3, continued to be controversial and to be criticized by various segments of the industry.

PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in hearing protective devices for use in different mining environments RESEARCH SUMMARY: Previous NIOSH research shows that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals and that miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and sex. As described in the National Occupation-al Research Agenda, problems created by occupational hearing loss include(1) reduced quality of life due to social isolation and unrelenting tinnitus,(2) impaired communication with family members, the public, and coworkers, (3) diminished ability to monitor the work environment (i.e., warning signals, equipment sounds, etc.), (4) lost productivity and increased accidents resulting from impaired communication and isolation, and (5) expenses for workers? compensation and hearing aids.

The countries of Asia and the Pacific have large resources of diverse minerals. Australia and China have extensive mineralization that are commercially being exploited. The major minerals in Australia with known reserves adequate for both domestic demand and export markets include bauxite, clays, copper, diamond, gold, iron ore, lead, manganese, mineral sands (titanium minerals), nickel, salt, silver, tin, uranium, and zinc. China is the world leader in proven reserves of antimony, barite, magnesite, molybdenum, rare earths, titanium (ilmenite), tungsten, and vanadium. It also has about 55 billion tons of iron ore, albeit with an average grade of only 30 % to 35 % elemental iron content. With the exception of chromium and copper, China has significant resources of a wide array of minerals and metals, based on its production and/or export capability for these commodities. Additionally, India has significant resources of bauxite and mineral sands; Indonesia, bauxite, copper, nickel, and tin; Malaysia, tin and associated titanium; Mongolia, copper, fluorspar, and lead-zinc; New Caledonia, nickel; New Zealand, gold and iron sand; North Korea, magnesite; Papua New Guinea, copper, gold and mineral sands; Philippines, copper, chromite, and gold; and Sri Lanka, gemstones. Moreover, there appears to be extensive mineralization III Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, but they have yet to be definitively delineated.

The amplitude of the first peak of an ultrasonic pulse which has traversed the diameter of a sphere is obtained for many directions in the sphere. This amplitude is relative to an input which is held constant for all measurements on a given sphere. Since the boundary conditions, distance of travel, and the controllable experimental factors are constant for all measurements, variations in this amplitude reflect variations in the attenuation or absorption with direction. The data are plotted and contoured as an equal area projection. The attenuation symmetry is the symmetry expressed by the contour pattern. Analysis of the data from several rock types indicates that the amplitude expresses a higher percentage of anisotropy than the velocity. In most cases the attenuation symmetry appears to be of the same system as the elastic symmetry expressed by the velocity. Results are shown for three rock spheres.

Develop a 22-ton capacity temporary mine roof support light enough to be easily lifted and transported manually from one place to another. Approach Several potential approaches were investigated in developing a new temporary support. An all-hydraulic, high-strength aluminum design was chosen as the best. The support was designed, fabricated, and tested in several mines. The first units, built for 6- to 8-foot seam heights, have a load- bearing capacity of 22 tons, and weigh only 55 pounds. How It Works The lightweight hydraulic support is designed for use in any temporary support situation in place of wood posts or steel mechanical or hydraulic supports. This includes use prior to roof bolting in room and pillar mining and in longwall development sections, use as head and tailgate supports for a longwall, and use as turn posts and breaker posts in retreat mining operations. In 1987 and 1988, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 3,100-acre Borah Peak Wilderness Study Area (10-047-004) and a 708-acre parcel adjacent to the north in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Custer County, ID, about 18 mi northwest from MacKay. The study area lies along the western foothills of the Lost River Range and is underlain by quartzite, sandstone, shale, argillite, dolostone, and limestone. The Lost River fault, a major active fault, lies along the length of the study area. Large alluvial fans spread out from valleys originating east of the study area.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the potential supply of primary copper from domestic mines and deposits and found that increases in copper price will be required in order for many domestic deposits to continue production. As part of the study, a tonnage-price relationship was developed indicating the quantity of copper that could be produced economically from known deposits at various copper prices and at various rates of return on the required capital investment. Costs of production are based on estimated capital and operating costs for mining, concentrating, transporting, smelting, and refining. Direct and indirect operating costs, recovery of investment, and return on investment have been included in the smelting and refining costs. Capital and operating costs are calculated in January 1978 dollars, and byproduct credits are based on January 1978 prices. Known domestic copper mines and deposits contain nearly 92 million metric tons of copper in about 14 billion metric tons of demonstrated mineralized material. These tonnages represent the current domestic copper reserve base. Approximately 74 million metric tons of copper are recoverable from the reserve base using existing technology. Of this quantity, slightly more than 50 million metric tons are economically recoverable assuming a price of 51.00 per pound of copper, credit for the recovery of byproducts, and a 15-percent rate of return on capital investment. Approximately 60 percent of the copper occurs in mines that were producing at the time of the study.
