The investigation summarized in this report addressed two primary issues: the determination and use of correction factors, and the development of guidelines for velocity measurement site selection. Other ancillary issues which were addressed include a comparison of measurement methods and devices, aircourse cross-sectional area measurement, and characteristics of mine airways. An exhaustive literature search and analysis was performed; extensive in-mine experiments were conducted; a quantitative analysis of the data was used to develop correction factor tables and site selection guidelines. The reported results of other researchers who have examined the correction factors and site selection criteria, were analyzed in light of the results of this study. The measurement devices included in the experimental phase were: vane anemometer, vortex shedding anemometer, a prototype thermoanemometer, smoke tube, and, oil of wintergreen. The measurement methods include single-point centerline, timed¬-point traverse, continuous traverse for the anemometers, and various distances and cloud positions for the smoke tube and oil of wintergreen devices.

This report is the 25th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations, and the 7th of these reports to be issued on a calendar-year basis.3 It reviews briefly work in progress during 1960, and furnishes references to publications by Bureau personnel during 1960 and also to a few older papers that were not cited in prior reports of this series. Details about some of the researches mentioned can be found by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes or in the further list in the Miscellaneous section; other phases of work are reported here for the first time and will be covered in more detail by later publications, Coal programs of the Bureau of Mines extend over the wide range of theoretical and applied studies indicated by the table of contents. Fundamental research on coal structure and on the properties of coal will, over a period of time, increase the general knowledge about coal Which scientists and engineers may use in answering practical questions and in solving problems in the mining and utilization of coal. More applied studies are conducted in connection with the developement and evaluation of new mining techniques and the effective processing and utilization of coal and of coal products. Health and safety activities, analyses of coal being mined, and technical advice and assistance to Federal agencies in connection with fuel and boiler-water problems are among the practical services handled by the Bureau.4 5

The influence of thermal treatments on the grindability of low-grade hematitic iron ores from Michigan and Minnesota was examined in bench-scale tests. Treatment factors were roasting temperature, roasting atmosphere, and ore cooling conditions. Bond ball mill grindability and work indices were used as response indicators in evaluating the condition of the ore. Of the three treatment factors evaluated, roasting atmosphere, which brought about the con version of iron oxides to magnetite, had the most significant effect; roasting temperature had the next most important effect; and cooling condition had the least effect. Optimum grindability was obtained with reduced-quenched products of both ores at 650° C, near the alpha-beta phase transformation of quartz.

RESEARCH strengthened the position of cesium as the preferred material (commonly but erroneously called "fuel") for ionic propulsion engines. Its use as an element of the plasma thermocouple for generating electricity also seemed more likely. Domestic Production.-No domestic ore of cesium and rubidium was produced. San Antonio Chemicals, Inc., San Antonio, Tex., and Maywood Chemical Works, Maywood, N.J., continued to produce cesium and rubidium compounds including carbonate, chromate, hydroxide, nitrate, sulfate, and all four halides. Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo., began producing various cesium and rubidium salts. American Potash & Chemical Corp., Los Angeles, Calif., offered cesium and rubidium for sale.

The Bureau of Mines developed a process for producing high-purity zinc and tin by electrorefining from liquid amalgams. Commercial grade metals were dissolved in mercury to produce saturated amalgams at room temperature. Amalgams were also prepared by electrolytic transfer from soluble anodes of the metals to a mercury cathode. Amalgams formed by both methods were used as anodes in electrorefining cells to produce high-purity cathodes. Metal impurities, excluding mercury, were at levels of less than 5 ppm in zinc and 9 ppm in tin. Mercury content was about 2 to 10 ppm in zinc products, and this was effectively removed by heating the cathodes in a vacuum. Mercury was excluded from tin cathodes by pumping the tin electrolyte through tin turnings and controlling the cell temperature.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Florida phosphate mining industry, investigated the dewatering of waste phosphatic slimes. Part of this investigation was to determine the electrophoretic mobilities and cation exchange capacities of the slimes. The mobilities and exchange capacities are reported for samples of slimes taken from 15 plants operating in the Florida land-pebble phosphate district that includes Polk,Hillsborough, Manatee, Hardee, and DeSoto Counties. The electrophoretic mobilities determined were all negative, ranging from -0.24 to -1.93 (micrometers per second) per (volt per centimeter). Also reported are frequency distributions of electrophoretic mobilities, electrophoretic mobilities of slime diluted with distilled water and electrophoretic mobilities of sand-slime mixtures. The cation exchange capacities ranged from 17 to 45 milliequivalents per 100 grams of slime solids.

This report describes three cases of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in a manhole, including one fatality, from CO migrating through soil after nearby use of explosives. A municipal sewer project involved installation of new pipes and manholes. Work of the general construction contractor was interrupted when a subcontractor detonated 265 pounds of nitroglycerin-based explosive 40-60 feet south of the manhole to break up underlying rock. A construction worker who descended into the manhole 45 minutes after the explosion collapsed within minutes, and two co-workers descended into the manhole to rescue him. One rescuer retrieved the unconscious worker, and the other rescuer died in the manhole. All workers had elevated carboxyhemoglobin levels. In the subsequent NIOSH investigation, air monitoring was conducted with real-time instruments, and air samples were collected in Tedlar bags. Laboratory analyses of the bag samples collected near the bottom showed 1905 parts per million (ppm) CO, 19.5% oxygen, and 3% carbon dioxide. Direct reading instruments showed progressively higher concentrations as the sensor was lowered into the manhole. Subsequent chamber tests on sample explosive yielded 27 liters CO per kilogram detonated. Based on this value, the surface blast at the construction site may have produced about 3,250 liters (114.8 cubic feet) CO. The CO in this incident most likely was released from the nearby explosion and migrated through soil and fractured rock into the manhole. The blasting and construction industries should be made aware of this previously unrecognized CO exposure hazard associated with surface blasting. The extent of CO exposure from explosives used in construction is not known, and additional information on the extent of CO exposure must be collected. In addition, confined space entry procedures (including monitoring confined space atmospheres before entry) should be observed; CO monitoring of confined spaces in the presence of blasting can prevent future incidents such as this one.

A phase in strip mining of bituminous coal is the overturning of the surface of the land. The ;purpose of this report is to acquaint the operators and others interested in stripping with the work that has been done in certain States to reclaim the surface of land from which the coal has been removed by this method of mining. The preparation of this manuscript follows an extensive study of the subject in the field in the course of which a large number of strip mines were visited. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The information used in the report was obtained through the courtesy and cooperation of the operators of the mines visited, State officials and educational institutions, and others interested in the subject.

Gaseous products resulting from rapid pyrolysis of coal and coal/inhibitor mixture's by a ruby laser and a flash-tube were monitored on-line by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The distribution of stable gases from the coal is not Greatly influenced by the addition of small quantities of powdered flame inhibitors. Preliminary studies of the reaction of elementary radicals with coal and coal/inhibitor mixtures are described. The different types of experiments are discussed with regard to possible modification and application to studies of flame inhibitor action.

There was reported in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 5754/ a series of tests to determine the compressibility and bearing strength of specimens prepared from blocks of potash salt obtained from a mine near Carlsbad , N. Mex . The events leading up to the investigation were sketched in a foreword by George S. Rice , then chief mining engineer of the Bureau ( retired September 30 , 1937 ) ; this foreword also gives a discussion of the possibility of increasing the ultimate total recovery of the potash salt by " second mining" of pillars or by use of a longwall system . In June 1936 , Rice and the senior author visited Carlsbad with H. I. Smith , chief of the mining division of the Geological Survey , to observe mining then in progress and to discuss with the management of one of the mines records of convergence of roof and floor which they were obtaining . It developed that serious thought was being given to the possibility of roof failure resulting from shear at the faces of pillars . There was envisioned the danger of such cracks extending upward to water - bearing strata . Obviously , the simple compression tests of the potash salt then being made would throw no light on this question , and tests of assemblies of potash and roof salts would have to be made . In this connection it is to be remembered that in the mine no sharp division exists between the potash salt being recovered and the nearly pure halite which forms the roof . The interlocked crystalline structure is continuous , and there is merely a very rapid decrease in the proportion of sylvite in a short distance vertically . Figure 2 of Technical Paper 575 shows that two samples near the top of the salt being mined contained , respectively , 51 and 65 percent potassium chloride . Contrasted with this is an analysis of the roof salt given on page 24 of that publication , which showed only 3.6 percent potassium chloride . As the data given in Technical Paper 575 show , the roof salt is much less plastic than the potash salt . The immediate roof may then be thought of as a more rigid stratum of indefinite extent resting on and continuous with yielding supports and loaded uniformly at the rate of 900 to 950 pounds per square inch . Just what thickness of the salt should be considered as immediate roof is uncertain .

"The occurrence of Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP) ·has been potentially linked with several characteristics of coal such as rank, volatility, percent content of ash and non-coal components, quartz content, and the presence of several trace elements. According to the National Research Council, numerous epidemiological Studies: indicate that the incidence of CWP varies significantly with the composition and/or the concentration of the coal mine dust.Although advances in dust suppression techniques have markedly reduced respirable dust levels in underground coal mines, the National Research Council has concluded that chemical characteristics of respirable dust from different coal seams should be studied. With this objective in mind, research has been conducted in underground coal mines located in the eastern and mid-western United States, and in the laboratory to characterize the elemental composition of mining-generated airborne dust and laboratory-generated dust derived from samples taken from these mines. The goal of the research is to determine if a relationship exists between mining-generated and laboratory-generated dust from the ·same mine. Results of this research will be presented. ,"

Figure 1 is a reproduction of a chart recently prepared by the Bureau of Mines at its Pittsburgh Laboratory to show the Bureau's approval work in connection with electrically operated mining equipment. Nearly 27 years of approval work, covering 346 approved units, are shown on this chart. These approvals are arranged according to year of approval and the manufacturer to whom approval was granted. Forty-five manufacturers are represented, and a scheme of using various colored tabs permits the following subdivision of the equipment: Cutting machines, loading machines, conveyors, battery-operated locomotives, battery-operated power trucks, drills and drilling machines, rock-lusting machines, pumps, room hoists, air compressors,, and miscellaneous, The greatest number of approvals granted to a single manufacturer is 80; the next highest is 65, and the third is 49. Several manufacturers have been granted only a single approval. The chart shows all approvals granted for, motored equipment. Some of these units have since become obsolete, and a few are used to a very limited, extent if at all.

This work, conducted under Bureau of Mines contract, deals with the development of a computer graphics software package that will: 1. display mine ventilation schematics and other representative Illustrations for a real-time data acquisition system under development by the Bureau, and, 2. utilize the Bureau-owned Minefire and Ventilation Code for display of ventilation on and contamination predictions. The software package has been written try operate on a 64K, Z-80 based microprocessor-computer. The project has been divided into two phases. The first phase dealt with the development of the graphics software The sec rind phase dealt with the retrofit of the Minefire and Ventilation Code to the Z-80 microprocessor-computer.

[This is the eleventh in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first report contained data, on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The present report presents analytical data for 2,020 samples, representing the products of approximately 120 companies, which, as in previous surveys, include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were received. As in previous surveys, the data are divided into the three groups of samples of regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines, and each group has been averaged separately. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group, exclusive of the of the Pacific coast, axe as follows: Regular price, 1,071 samples, 29 items, and 77 brands premium Price, 608 samples, 235 items, and 72 brands; third-grade gasoline, 341 samples, 196 items, and 78 brands. "Since its establishment in 1910 the Bureau of Mines has consistently recommended the rock-dusting of bituminous and lignitic coal mines as a preventive of widespread explosions. As with many other proposed innovations, the response to the bureau's recommendation has been slow; but during the past 10 years many coal mines have done some rock-dusting, even though probably fewer than 50 of the country's approximately 6,000 coal mines are thoroughly rock-dusted. Notwithstanding the inadequacy of the rock-dusting which has been done in most of the mines which have adopted the new system, numerous cases are at hand. indicating the well-founded basis of the bureau's claims regarding the effectiveness of rock-dust in stopping explosions. Very brief descriptions will be given of several cases in which explosions in coal mines of the United States are fairly definitely known to have been stopped by rock-dust during the past 5 or 6 years; in addition, several cases are cited in which explosions were stopped through the agency of rock-dust and moisture.A rock-dusted mine is one in which the floor, roof, and sides of every accessible working place, including haulage ways, airways, manways, and rooms and connections have an application of rock-dust - for instance, limestone - such that the incombustible content of the aggregate dust on those surfaces is over 60 per cent. The dust in these workings should be sampled at regular intervals to determine whether the incombustible matter in the coal-dust is less than the necessary minimum of 60 per cent; another application of rock-dust should be given when the incombustible percentage is less than 60. (As an example of thorough rock-dusting, see Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6578, 1932, which describes how rock-dusting is done in Alabama at a cost of 1.8 cents per ton of coal for a thorough application; Report of Investigations 3060, February, 1931, Rock-Dusting In A Pennsylvania Coal Mine; or Information Circular 6244, 1930, giving data, including costs, on rock-dusting in coal mines in New Mexico.)An explosion may be started by the ignition of gas, even when rock-dust is present; hence it is not correct to say that rock-dust will prevent an explosion of gas; however, if rock-dust has been applied to a working place which has present an explosive mixture of me-thane and air, and if an open light is used or a blown-out shot or an electric arc occurs, although there will very likely be an ignition and possibly an explosion, the rock-dust will certainly prevent ignition of the coal-dust nearby, and unless the general atmosphere has an explosive gas mixture, the rock-dust will stop propagation of the flame throughout the mine. In other words, if an explosion is started by gas or by coal-dust and the mine has been rock-dusted as defined, the rock-dust will prevent widespread extension of the explosion, unless the general atmosphere contains methane and air in explosive proportions.With these definitions clearly in mind, instances are now given where rock-dust has played a prominent part in the stopping of several explosions. No cases have been included where there was any reasonable doubt that rock-dust had taken a definite part in the limiting of the explosions."

The chemistry involved in the microbial dissolution of iron and copper from such sulfide minerals as pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, cove11ite, and bornite is described. The chemical criteria used to evaluate the activity of microorganisms on these minerals were changes in pH, ferric iron produced, and oxygen consumption. In a series of experiments in which a ferrous sulfate nutrient solution was percolated over small portions of the above-mentioned copper sulfide minerals for 56 days, the iron-oxidizing bacteria Ferrobaci11us ferrooxidans and Thiobaci11us ferrooxidans were capable of bringing about the dissolution of 23.7 percent of the copper from chalcocite, 56.3 percent of the copper from cove11ite, and 29.8 percent of the copper from bornite by the microbial production of ferric sulfate which reacted with these minerals. Laboratory tests have demonstrated that pure strains of the iron-oxidizing bacteria act as catalysts to the ferrous iron being oxidized by the Oxygen of a system containing pyrite and chalcopyrite. In a series of experiments during which nutrient solution was percolated over pyrite for 70 days, the ferric iron produced by the iron-oxidizing bacteria was 112 to 120 times greater than that produced atmospherically.

This document is Volume II of a two-volume report on underground and surface coal mine fires occurring between 1950 and 1977. Volume I discusses the methods of data acquisition, data analysis procedures, results and conclusions. This volume contains (1) a master list of all fire incidents obtained from MSHA reports, (2) an annotated bibliography of all MSHA reports, journal articles on selected incidents, and non-reportable fires (appendix), and (3) indexes to be used in accessing incidents in the master list and annotated bibliography. These three types of information provide the reader with a complete summary of coal mine fires during the period from 1950 through 1977 and a convenient means to locate incidents of specific interest. The body of this volume is organized around two tables and a series of indexes. The two tables are master lists of underground and surface fire incidents. They are followed by 14 indexes keyed to the master list and annotated bibliography. The appendix contains three different parts: o The annotated bibliography of MSHA fire reports (one section each for underground and surface mine fires) o The annotated bibliography of journal articles about selected fires from the MSHA bibliography o A listing of non-reportable fires (one section each for underground and surface mine fires) Descriptions of the contents and use of each of the three major components of this volume (i.e., master list, indexes, and appendix) are presented in Section 2.0.
