Many western ores containing ;old, silver, and copper can be mined and concentrated at a profit only when the recovery of those metals is high and treatment costs are low. Usually, ores containing easily dissolved copper minerals, or copper minerals that become soluble to some extent through oxidation during treatment, present a real problem in cyanidation. Copper cyanide compounds are formed that tend to 'precipitate and that cannot yield regenerated cyanide and metallic copper on contact with zinc. This results not only in some loss of copper through solution in cyanide, but in excessive consumption of cyanide above the amount required for the extraction of Gold and silver. Any moans, therefore, of minimizing the: loss of cyanide while at the same time effecting high recoveries of the several values contained in the ore is of wide interest. A sample of typical low-grade ore of gold, silver, and copper, containing copper-sulfide minerals, was obtained from the MacLaren Gold Mines Co., Cooke, Park County, Mont., for laboratory investigation by flotation and cyanidation.

"Three men lost their lives in the Black Diamond Coal Mine near Seattle, Wash., recently while wearing oxygen breathing apparatus. The press dispatches stated that these men lost their lives while practicing with the apparatus. Later reports stated that the men died while attempting to make a trip 1200 feet down a 25 degree slope which was filled with black damp, in order to measure the amount of water that had accumulated at the bottom of the mine, and the trip was attempted with oxygen in the tanks of the apparatus with dials indicating only 45 minutes supply. The oxygen in the tank was used up and the men therefore lost their lives from a deficiency of air to breathe.In spite of all the education and training done by the Government to prevent accidents, men are prone occasionally to take unnecessary chances. Every piece of apparatus, no matter how perfect, has its limitations. The Government, through the agency of the Bureau of Mines, has trained many thousands of miners in the use of mine rescue apparatus. The training has been given to all miners who requested it, and the Bureau has gone to the extreme of urging miners to join the rescue and first-aid classes. In spite of all the efforts of the Government, men occasionally attempt the impossible."

"INTRODUCTION Summarized data developed by J. E. Crawshaw and E.J. Murphy, 4/of the Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines, suggesting marked variations in oxygen condition in three permissible explosives, have been reported 5/. Such variation is of interest in other work, it having been shown, for example, that the oxygen condition may have marked effect upon the products 3/ and the propulsive strength 7/ of explosives. It seemed that a more detailed presentation and more usual statistical analysis of these data might be of considerable general interest and not complemented in the literature.This report presents both the original data developed by Crawshaw and Murphy and the results of a simplified but seemingly acceptable statistical analysis of these data. The logical ground for this analysis might seem somewhat questionable because of the lack of systematic information concerning the extent of errors in the analytical procedure but the data show that there are several cogent and seemingly unequivocal indications of real heterogeneity in the explosives."

"INTRODUCTION The object of the techniques described in this report is to determine the possibilities of separating the components of a raw coal into such grades as may be necessary to recover some exceptionally clean functions for special purposes.To do this commercial gravity methods would require separation at very low specific gravities, entirely outside the range of conventional practice. Hence, a technique has been developed for breaking down cool ample, into very close fractions within the gravity range of the (-lean coal matter as well as for separating it from the refuse and particles.Such data on the fundamental specific-gravity consist of the clean-coal matter will serve to appraise the difficulty of the problem and to chow be accomplished if and when effective methods of making such separations commercially are developed."

The logic leading to the development of the experiments in this paper already has been stated in Part I,3 but is briefly as follows: The results of the batch-grind experiments in which time of "grind" and fineness of finished product were the variables, strongly indicated (1) that batch grinding involving a single grind could not be operated under any condition to give maximum mill efficiency, (2) that the, sieve analysis of the feed charge in the mill materially affected the efficiency of the mill, and (3) that the percentage of finished product in the mill is a vital factor in ball-mill efficiency. A laboratory closed-circuit grind technic designed to simulate present closed-circuit grinding suggested itself, in which: a ball mill and a classifier constitute the grinding unit. The features of the closed-circuit grinding system are: (1) Short large diameter mills, (3) rapid flow of pulp through the mill, (3) continuous automatic removal of finished product from the system, and (4) high circulating loads. The high circulating load is a result if the short length of the Mill - that is, of the time the charge remains in the mill - and the small percentage of finished material produced during each circuit of the feed through the mill.

The Bureau of Mines has completed an investigation of the effectiveness of methane drainage in the Lower Sunnyside Coalbed at Kaiser Steel Corp.'s Sunnyside No. 1 Mine in Utah. Most of the previous at- tempts to drain methane gas using long horizontal holes were conducted in the Eastern Coal Province. From the high degree of success realized in these efforts and the large body of knowledge gained from associated research, it seemed natural to extend the technology to western coalfields. Previous work had indicated that properties affecting gas drainage were variable in the Sunnyside Coalbed. In an attempt to characterize these properties, four degasification holes were drilled from the out- side entries of an advancing section. The holes were drilled to lengths of 780, 1,680, 1,315, and 1,047 ft and produced initial flow rates of 50,000, 180,000, 340,000, and 240,000 f t3/d, respectively. A total of over 300 million f t3 of commercial-quality gas has been removed from the Sunnyside Coalbed. The four holes have reduced face emissions by 78 pct.

The Iron Mountain investigations were part of a comprehensive program for making a national inventory of raw materials used in the production of steel. A tentative program of core drilling by the Bureau of Mines was set up for exploration of more promising iron deposits. Iron Mountain was selected as worthy of investigation because it could serve as a potential source of ore for the war-created steel plant at Fontana, Calif. The deposits were reported on by an engineer in October 1943. The purpose of the project was to determine the lateral and vertical extent of ore bodies and to obtain accurate material data on them.

Apply state-of-the-art monitoring and computer systems technology to remotely monitor geostructural data and evaluate ground conditions in near real-time. Background Recently, the coal mining industry has progressed dramatically from a labor-intensive industry to highly mechanized and automated systems achieving significantly higher production rates. In underground longwall coal mines, production and face advance rates have increased by almost tenfold in the last 15 to 20 years. With increasingly high advance rates, geologic anomalies which affect rock mass quality are encountered more frequently, far exceeding the current rate at which ground control information can be processed and analyzed. As a result, mine operators find themselves with insufficient time or resources to cope with the rapidly changing ground conditions. To keep up with the technological advancement in mining and the associated ground control problems, the Bureau of Mines is conducting a multi-phase research pro¬gram to implement a computer-assisted Ground Control Management System (GCMS). Research is ongoing at present, but when completed the system will be designed to 1) monitor and evaluate data on rock properties, geologic conditions, and rock mechanics data from underground sensors in near real-time; 2) interpret the analyses to evaluate the interaction between various critical ground control parameters; 3) assess the structural integrity of the mine; and 4) determine failure modes and provide recommendations for control measures, design modifica¬tions, and alternative support procedures. The system will be expanded into its full capability during various phases of this research program.

The Bureau of Mines surveyed waste disposal sites at 18 metal and non-metal mines and conducted laboratory and full-scale field tests to de-termine the effects of tailings deposition techniques on physical properties of tailings pond beaches. Survey data included measurements of beach slopes, descriptions of deposition techniques, and measurements of beach physical properties taken at various distances from the point of discharge. Laboratory tests involved depositing two types of tailings, each with different grain-size distributions, into a settling trough and determining the resultant physical properties of settled materials along the length of the beach. Side confinement and the closeness of the water pool to the point of deposition caused the laboratory results to be inconclusive. Full-scale field deposition tests conducted at the tailings pond of a cooperating mine showed that there were similarities in relationships between exit velocities of tailings slurry and physical properties of the settled tailings on the beach.

"To help evaluate the vibration patterns of an excised lung, a method is developed to determine which parts of the surface of an excised lung are responding to acoustic excitation via the trachea. Holographic interferometry, a very' sensitive technique ·that can measure movements of a few microns, is used to detect the lung surface movements.The intact lung and heart are excised from Long· Evans male rats weighing 250 gm. A tube is inserted into the trachea and connected via a funnel to a 3 inch cone speaker. The assembly is positioned in the holographic unit and excited at frequencies up to 10,000 Hz. The holographic unit contains an acousto-optic shutter used with a 0.5 watt Argon laser.The resulting reconstructed holograms contain interference fringes that are indicated of lung surface vibration.INTRODUCTIONA 1986 report by the U.S. National Committee on Biomechanics [1] describes diseases of the lung as a major national health problem. One of the recommendations of the report is for continued study of the mechanical properties of lung tissue. As an example, the report cites at least three areas that would benefit from a better understanding of the vibratory patterns or the lung."

The selective recovery of nickel and cobalt from impure raw materials is being investigated by the Bureau of Mines as part of a program to develop improved procedures for preparation of pure metals. A combination solvent extraction-electrolytic process has been developed in the laboratory that enables preparation of high-quality nickel and cobalt from nickel oxide containing, in percent, 76 nickel, 0.8 cobalt, 0.5 magnesium, 0.2 iron, and lesser quantities of copper, zinc, and other metals. The oxide was smelted, using carbon as reductant, and cast into anodes. These anodes subsequently were dissolved in diaphragm-type electrolytic cells. Nickel and cobalt were deposited separately from appropriate electrolytes, concurrent with dissolution of the impure anodes. Anolyte containing nickel and cobalt in the form of chlorides and sulfates was treated for removal of impurities and separation of nickel and cobalt. First, iron and aluminum were removed as hydroxides by adding nickel hydroxide to raise the pH of the anolyte from 2.3 to 4.5. Next, the pH was adjusted to 2 by adding hydrochloric acid, and the solution was treated by solvent extraction to separate nickel and cobalt.

A field study was conducted to evaluate seat designs on shuttle cars. Eight operators participated in evaluating seat designs on the basis of perceived levels of vehicle jarring/jolting and discomfort. Researchers also measured the levels of vehicle jarring/jolting. Four basic seat designs were compared on low and mid-coal seam shuttle cars during production operations at two underground coal mines. Two seats were currently used on the shuttle cars and another two were NIOSH designs. Objective data were collected using accelerometers with pre-amplifiers and filters connected to a data recorder; whereas subjective data were gathered with a visual analog scale (VAS) and a questionnaire. Results from measured levels of jarring/jolting showed that the NIOSH Seat L2A smoothed out bumps better than any other seats. Using the VAS, mid-seam and low-seam shuttle car operators rated the levels of jarring/jolting and discomfort lower with the NIOSH seat than the other seats. Questionnaire responses indicated that operators rated NIOSH seat designs as more comfortable. This research will provide the industry with better seat designs for isolating jarring/jolting in vehicles. Furthermore, researchers plan to improve the NIOSH seats using information gathered in this study.

"INTRODUCTION The Farmer prospect was examined by W. R. Green, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in June 1944. As a result, studies of this property were included in a general preliminary investigation of the Etevens County lead-zinc deposits by the Bureau in 1945. The exploratory work was designed chiefly to supplement the surface examination by determining the nature of the mineralization below the zone of oxidization. The results of the small-scale diamond-drilling program undertaken at the property are presented in the following report.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization our resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to security and economy. "INTRODCICTIONSilicosis is the chronic fibrosing disease of the lungs caused by the inhalation of crystalline silica. However, inhalation of crystalline silica, may induce three distinctly different disease patterns; i.e., chrome silicosis, accelerated silicosis, and acute silicosis. These three disease patterns differ in their pathologic characteristics, clinical symptoms, onset of disease, and mortality. Many studies in the past have focused on the elucidation of mechanisms involved in the development of chrome silicosis. We recently reported that freshly fractured silica has surface properties that could make it more reactive with lung tissue than aged silica, and that this unique reactivity of freshly fractured silica may be involved in the pathogenesis of acute silicosis (Dalal et al., 1986; Vallyathan et al., 1988; Shi et II., 1988). Because freshly fractured silica could contain some moieties in an ""excited state,"" due to the breakage of silicon oxygen bonds, we postulated that the de-excitation of these moieties could produce light which could be monitored by a luminescence measurement technique. In addition, if this ""excited state'' of silica could trigger a greater biologic response by phagocytic cells, this activation could be monitored by a chemiluminescence technique in the presence of appropriate enhancers.This investigation describes for the first time the use of luminescence in the study of freshly fractured silica and its properties. Enhanced biologic reactivity of the freshly fractured silica with alveolar macrophages was monitored by the chemiluminescence technique.MATERIALS AND METHODSNative silica was obtained from the dust bank of the GenericRespirable Dust Technology Center, Pennsylvania State University, State College, PA, and ground for 3~ min in an agate ball mill. It was then sieved through a 20 micron mesh filter and used within 1 O min as fresh silica or stored in glass bottles for aging. X-ray energy spectrometry and X-ray powder diffraction studies on representative samples were made to confirm the mineralogic purity. All the silica samples were found to be 99 % pure with minimal detectable conlamination by metal ions."

Coal mine fires pose a constant danger to the safety of miners and to their livelihood. Underground mine fires pose an added hazard because of the confined environment with remote exits. Enactment of safety regulations [30 CFR2 75 and 771 for under- ground coal mines and surface coal operations has greatly improved the safety of miners. However, mine fires and fire injuries remain serious hazards for all coal mining operations. This report analyzes mine fires and fire injuries for all U.S. coal mining categories (underground coal mines, surface of underground coal mines, surface coal mines, and coal preparation plants) during 1990-1999. Fires involving contractors are also included in the analysis. Similar analyses (for underground coal mines only) by the former U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) were reported by McDonald and Pornroy [I9801 and Pornroy and Carigiet [I9951 for 1950-1977 and 1978-1992, respectively. For comparison purposes, data for 1978-1 992 are mentioned in the "Underground Coal Mine Fires" section of this report. Detailed analyses of mobile equipment fires for all underground and surface coal and metal/nonmetal mining categories during 1990-1999 have recently been reported by NIOSH [De Rosa 20041. Risk rate values (fire and injury risk rates) for the 10-year period (1990-1999) and for five successive 2-year periods within the 10-year period are derived. Risk rate values for individual states for the 10-year period are also derived. Other variables by state and time period include employees&apos; working hours, lost workdays, and coal production (underground and surface coal mines only). The number of fire fatalities is reported by time period. Variables such as ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material are reported by five 2-year periods only. Furthermore, the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires has been analyzed by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location. For comparison purposes, the major fire and fire injury findings for all coal mining categories have been reported. The data in this report were derived from "Injury Experience in Coal Mining" [MSHA 1991a, 1992,1993,1994a, 1995a, 1996, 1997, 1998b, 1999c, 20001, "Fire Accident Reports" [MSHA 199 1 b,c; 1994b; 1995b,c; 1998a,c,d,e,f; 1999a,b,d,e], MSHA "Fire Accident Abstracts" internal publications, and verbal communications with mine personnel. Mining companies are required by 30 CFR 50 to report to MSHA all fires that result in injuries and fires that are not extinguished within 30 min of discovery. A small number of fires lasting <30 min without injuries reported in the "Fire Accident Abstracts" have been included in this report. The analysis in this report will provide the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the mining industry with a better understanding of the causes and hazards of mine fires and fire injuries. It will also form a basis for developing future fire research programs.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health investigated how the starting of induction motors may cause nuisance tripping of short-circuit protection on coal mine power systems. This research had a dual purpose: 1) to identify how motor-start waveforms differ from those for short circuits and 2) to devise a method to provide short-circuit protection without intentional time delays to account for motor starts. This technology will help ensure that surface temperatures of energized electrical apparatus will not exceed gas or dust ignition thresholds when short circuits occur.

"INTRODUCTION This report describes the work done and presents the data obtained from limited diamond drilling at the lead-zinc deposits cf the Belle Eldridge Gold Mines, Inc., in Lawrence County, S. Dak. during the summer and fall of 1943. The work was undertaken in an effort to increase reserves and step-up production of zinc and lead so vitally important to the war program.The geology, topography and existing mine workings were mapped and studied. The estimated value of world crude mineral production in 1992 was $1,633.3 billion in terms of current (1992) dollars, or $1,178.0 billion in terms of constant 1983 dollars. This latter figure was 4.8% above the 1992 level but was 2.4% below the record-high level of $1,207.1 billion 1983 dollars set in 1980. Table 1 provides the latest available revised time series of the estimated value of world crude mineral production both in terms of 1983 constant dollars and in terms of current dollars. The statistical base for this estimation is derived from the data on the value of production of a group of key commodities that was published in the authoritative French language mineral industry periodical, Annales des Mines, for selected years up to 1983. The aforementioned values and those presented in the table are for crude minerals only and only begin to suggest the impact that the mineral industry has on the world economy. These figures represent only the value of mineral materials as they are mined or otherwise extracted from the Earth. They do not reflect the value added to these materials through downstream processing within the facilities commonly accepted as mineral industry plants. That is, value added through beneficiation of ores, smelting, refining, and similar processing is not included in these figures. Comprehensive world data on the value added by such processing are not available; however, a conservative estimate of the total value of processed output from mineral industry plants derived wholly from primary (newly mined) materials would be on the order of about $2,800 billion constant 1983 dollars or $3,900 billion in terms of 1992 dollars.
