The separation of tantalum and columbium by solvent extraction was under-taken as part of the Bureau of Mines research program to improve methods for extracting, separating, and reducing these elements to metal. The diethyl ketone aqueous HCl-HF system was one of several systems studied to determine the effect of metal and acid concentrations in aqueous solutions upon the transfer of tantalum and columbium into selected ketones. The tantalum-columbium oxide mixture used in this investigation was obtained by chemical extraction from Geomines slag. The investigation showed that tantalum 99.4 percent pure and columbium 97.2 percent pure can be produced by the selective transfer of tantalum into diethyl ketone from a solution of 2-N HF and 1-N HC1. The relatively low acid concentration necessary for tantalum transfer and the excellent selectivity of the system recommend its use for the separation of tantalum and columbium.

Coal bumps are defined as sudden failures of rock and coal near entries that are of such a magnitude that they expel large amounts of material into a mine opening. Coal bumps are influenced by geologic conditions, the geometric design of coal mine excavations, and the sequence and rate of extraction. Researchers from private industry and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have studied mechanisms of violent failure and have identified individual factors that contribute to coal bumps. In an attempt to develop tools for assessing coal bump potential, the authors initiated a comprehensive study using information from 25 case studies undertaken in U.S. mines. Multiple linear regression and numerical modeling analyses were used to identify the most significant variables contributing to coal bumps (excluding bumps related to fault-slip). Twenty-five geological, geometrical, and geomechanical variables were considered initially. The most important of these variables were then identified as (1) energy as calculated using the mechanical properties of the strata, depth of overburden, and joint density, (2) mining method, (3) pillar factor of safety, and (4) stress gradient and yield characteristics.

"Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa) and thromboxane A2 (TXA2) are major products of the activated alveolar macrophage and serve as key mediators of lung injury. In order to determine if the synthesis ofTXA2 and the release ofTNFa are associated, the production of these inflammatory agents by the human alveolar macrophage (AM), as a result of activation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), was assessed in the absence and presence of the thromboxane synthase inhibitors UK 38,485 (Dazmegrel) and OKY 046. UK 38,485 and OKY 046 inhibited both LPS-stimulated TXA2 production and TNFa release in a dose-dependent manner. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production was not increased by UK 38,485 or OKY 046. Neither LPS nor UK 38,485 had any effect on LT84 production by AM. Neither UK 38,485 or OKY 046 had any effect on LPS-stimulated interleukin-I beta release. However, the TXA2 mimetic, U46619, did not stimulate TNFa release by AM either in the absence or presence of UK 38,485. These findings suggest that 1) UK 38,485 and OKY 046 are inhibitors of both TXA2 production and TNFa release by activated human AM, 2) UK 38,485 probably does not exert its inhibitory action on TNFa release through effects on eicosanoid production and 3) the possibility that TNFa- and TXA2-induced lung injury may be subject to amelioration by imidazole-based compounds should be further evaluated.IntroductionTumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa), produced by monocytes and macrophages, is a potent peptide mediator of lung injury (1,2). The exaggerated release of TNFa has been implicated in the etiology of acute lung reactions such as septic shock of bacterial or viral origin (3,4). The role of TNFa is expressed primarily through its ability to activate a variety of cell types within the lung environment including polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs, ref. 5), type II epithelial cells (6) and fibroblasts (7). The role of lipid mediators in lung disease has also been extensively characterized (1). In particular, the relationship between pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis and the production of oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid (here termed ""eicosanoids"") appears to be a key factor in a variety of disease processes in the lung (8). The alveolar macrophage (AM) synthesizes primarily prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). thromboxane A2 (TXA2) and leukotriene 84 (LT84, ref. 9). These eicosanoids have been shown to produce a variety of effects in the lung including bronchial smooth muscle dilatation (PGE2, ref. 10), vascular smooth muscle contraction and platelet aggregation (TXA2, ref. 11) and oedema and immune cell extravasation (LT84, ref. 12)."

The Claim Point chromite deposits are at tidewater near the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula in southwestern Alaska, The United States Geological Survey had a field party in the region from July until September 1940 under P. W. Guild, assistant geologist; maps and geological data were assembled and made available to the Bureau of Mines. A preliminary investigation of the deposits at Claim Point by the senior author during July 1941 was followed by surface sampling and core drilling to determine the quantity and grade of the ere, The Geological Survey was represented at the project by George O. Gates, geologist. Cores were checked and the structural data revealed by drill cores were interpreted. The principal chromite deposits have been sampled and delimitated by trenching and core drilling. Other deposits were trenched and sampled but were too small or too low-grade to warrant core drilling.

Hand portable truck axle scales were purchased from the Martin¬Decker Company, Santa Ana, California, for weighing the rubber-tired mine shuttle cars. The scales consisted of two hydraulic load-pads, measuring 4" thick, and 21" long by 13" wide at the pad surface and one totallizer-dial indicator unit. The development of a technique to install the scales effectively for shuttle car-weighing followed an evolutionary process. The setup which finally proved to be effective entailed countersinking and level¬ling the load pads in the floor on the shuttle car trackway such that the tops of the pads were three inches below the floor level. A plat¬form consisting of two braced side-by-side 3" x 8" lumber planks was made. The platform was placed across the load pads with six inches of overlap on each side to provide room for imperfect tracking of the shuttle car. Additionally, 3" x 8" lumber planks were imbedded across the runway immediately behind and ahead of the platform. These auxili¬ary planks were firmly braced into the floor by vertical posts or jacks set against the roof; the planks constituted a stable approach platform to enable the shuttle car to roll unimpeded onto the scale platform in either direction of travel. Figure 22 shows this arrangement in detail. The setup of the scales was done during non-production hours prior to the first working shift of the week. This task took seven to twelve hours with two men. During the actual weighing experiment, the following limitations were realized. 1. The results of tests on oxidized lead ores from two properties are reported in this paper. The investigation was on a small laboratory scale only; no pilot-plant tests were made. One sample, from the Magajupa Mining Co., near Duenweg, No., contained coarsely crystalline and disseminated galena and cerussite, so both tabling and flotation were considered in the beneficiation. By this treatment of an ore containing 11.5 percent lead, a recovery of 79.5 percent of the lead was made in a concentrate containing 73.3 percent lead.

The work discussed in this report was done by the Bureau of Mines to develop a method for determining trace amounts of fluorine in coal. Samples of coal mixed with calcium oxide as a fixative agent for fluorine were ashed at 600° C and the residue was fused with sodium carbonate. The melt was dissolved in phosphoric and sulfuric acids and distilled to separate the fluorine) which was determined in the distillate by a SPADNS-zirconium spectrophotometric method. Fluorine determinations of 83 commercial coals ranged from 0,001 to 0.019 percent.

Tubular Handles can negatively affect the contents of the carpal tunnel. Years of injuries from grasping handles for tools and machines can cause carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis and wrist joint injuries. The can cause inability to use a hand and resulted in the longer absences from work than injuries from falls, accidents or fires.1 Cylindrical, tubular and rectangular handles are rolled flat structures. They place the hand on a rolled flat surface where the ends of the middle and ring fingers overlap the index and small fingers. They are pulled along a series of lines that contact the end joint of the index finger, the middle bones of the middle and ring fingers and the end bone of the small finger. Cylinders are pulled diagonally in the hand toward the carpal tunnel (CT) area. Gripping in this manner tenses asymmetric muscle groups in the forearm. Handles could work better if they do not place pressure on the CT and conform to the natural function or neutral hand position where the hand rests or dangles at the side of the body, the finger tips form a diagonal, the palm and fingers form a cup, the thumb rests between the index and middle fingers and the wrist is mildly extended. However, handles designed for the neutral position are pulled by diagonally oriented fingers into the valley between the thenar and hypothenar muscles where they can compress the median nerve and tendons exiting the CT. Seven principles for handles that do not place pressure on the carpal tunnel and employ optimal hand position are presented. First, handles should align the ends of the fingers parallel to the horizontal crease and not diagonally. Second, handles should extend from the cupped fingers to meet the muscles at the base of the thumb on the radial side of the hand and extend further on the other or ulnar side to meet a portion of the small muscles. Third, handles should have a recess on the proximal side to prevent contacting or placing pressure on the carpal tunnel. Fourth, handle design should be based on hand measurements in a position of function. Fifth, handles should come in sizes. Sixth, handles should be placed on tools to maintain the wrist and elbow in neutral position. The seventh is handles should support the maximum area of the hand and absorb, but not direct, vibration to the carpal tunnel. These principles led to prototypes and patents for handles for gripping, pinching and squeezing2,3,4 . The poster will illustrate and explain the principles Bonsil handles. Research, with existing tools, is needed to substantiate claims made for the Bonsil handle.

The first year's work of a proposed three-year study of the effects of the exposure of coal mine roof rocks to the mine atmosphere has been completed. The project has been terminated. The goal of the project was to determine if possible the mechanism or mechanisms by which coal mine roof rocks interact with the mine atmosphere and weaken, and coupled with mechanical stresses, ultimately fail. The scope of the study was limited to the effects of environmental factors on the deterioration of the rocks. While mechanical stresses may play an important role in the interaction of environmental factors, stress effects were excluded from the study. In order to study the effects of environment on coal mine roof rocks, samples were obtained from several coal mines in the western states. The rocks forming the roofs of most of the mines visited were shales of varying composition. These shales were subjected to numerous tests to determine how the rocks changed with time after exposure. In addition, the identity of the minerals present in the shales was determined by x-ray diffraction analysis and by thermal analysis as well as by optical microscopy

[The Bull Valley iron-ore district lie,; in the northern part of Washington County, Utah, approximately 30 airline miles southwest of the highly productive Iron Springs area (fig. 1). Iron-ore occurrences in the district have been known for many years, but they have not been mined, largely because of the inaccessibility of the area. The Bureau of Mines established a development project in the Bull Valley district in September 1941. Two separate areas, the Pilot and the Cove Mountain, were investigated. The work was planned to increase iron-ore reserves for steel production in the Western United States. During the project period three diamond-drill holes aggregating 1, 000 feet were completed (fig. 2). The program also included 6 408 linear feet of surface trenching and 171 feet of underground work (figs. 2 to 8, inclusive). Analyses were made of 460 samples from the diamond-drill holes and surface and underground excavations. The results of the analyses are given in tables 1, 2, 4, and 5, and the logs of the diamond-drill holes are shown in table 3. Field. work was completed in September 1942.]

The mine ventilation system consists of the fan, the roadways, and the regulatory devices. Sufficient fresh air must reach each working face in the mines to render harmless noxious, toxic, and respirable pollutants and to provide for the breathing of men. This is achieved by the proper selection of fan and regulatory devices. Because a mining system is dynamic, the mine ventilation system must also be dynamic. In short, mine ventilation engineers are frequently called upon to provide answers to the following questions: 1. Given a mine or the projected plan of a mine, what fan must be selected for the quantities specified in the section? At what point in its characteristic must it be operated? Are any speed changes or changes in blade settings warranted? 2. What should be the regulation in a section to insure cer¬tain desired quantity in that section? How does it affect the overall ventilation system? 3. What are the effects of driving a new shaft? Where should it be located? What size fan should be installed in the shaft? How does this affect the overall ventilation sys¬tem? 4. How much quantity increases can be obtained by cleaning up falls and streamlining roadways and by driving addi¬tional parallel airways? These questions are in no way exhaustive, nor are answers easy. Most of the operational and planning problems discussed above are to a cer¬tain extent solved by ventilation engineers using rules of thumb from experience. Both natural conditions and regulatory requirements have changed so drastically recently that use of scientific methods in ventilation planning and of faster methods in evaluating the plans is a must. Infrared reference spectra are presented of compounds of importance in lead sulfide flotation research. Included are the spectra of several short chain alkyl xanthates of lead and zinc, the corresponding dixanthogen compounds, and the common oxidation products of lead sulfide and their sodium analogs. The spectra of several frequently used industrial flotation reagent xanthates are also presented. A thorough, well-documented discussion is given of the various corrections made to correct the as recorded absorption band data to near absolute values.

This report describes the development and testing of a prototype tunneling machine. Principal efforts were aimed at testing of the fragmentation subsystem of a continuous drill and blast hard rock excavation machine suitable for use in underground mining and tunneling applications. The concept utilizes a unique self -shielding spiral blasting pattern that permits efficient performance with relatively small single shots, while at the same time directing major blast fragments at right angles to the tunnel axis. A major accomplishement was the development of a remote controlled, loading and initiation system in which explosive slurry and a detonator are Simultaneously placed (pumped) into the blasthole via a loading hose. The special electric long-delay detonator is inductively ignited upon emplacement, and the machine remains at the face during the blast.

"INTRODUCTION A preliminary examination of the Green Monster and Benich copper prospects was made by engineers E. W. Newnan and George N. Bennett, of the Bureau of Mines, on December 13, 1943. In an unpublished report, it was stated that certain geologic features appeared to be similar to those associated with the copper deposits of the nearby Butte district. On these premises, a preliminary diamond-drilling program was recommended to explore 300 to 400 feet below the mineralized outcrops for the possible presence of a sulfide enrichment zone. In accordance with that recommendation, three holes were drilled. This report presents the data provided by that preliminary drilling exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and small--scale continuous tests of weathered mica pegmatite ores from Hart County, Ga., to determine the technical feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates by flotation. Two modifications of the Bureau-developed anionic-cationic method were used. In one method, sodium carbonate and calcium lignin sulfonate were used for pH control and quartz depression; this method yielded mica concentrates containing 98.5 percent mica with a recovery of 91.4 percent. In the other modification, lime and sodium silicate were used with the calcium lignin sulfonate; concentrates containing 98.9 percent mica with a recovery of 86 percent were obtained.

This publication is one of a series by the Federal Bureau of Minus describing methods and costs of minim, uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The La Sal mine is in the Big Indian mining district, about 29 miles southeast of Moab, San Juan County, Utah. The claims that encompass the mine were located in March 1953, and the La Sal ore body was discovered as a result of a drilling program begun in August 1953. The mine is owned by the La Sal Mining & Development Co., a subsidiary of the Homestake Mining Co. Homestake continued the drilling program and in May 1954 began sinking a 572-foot shaft and constructing a surface plant. The plant and shaft were completed in October 1954. The La Sal ore body is in the Chinle (Triassic) formation. it is tabular and dips with the enclosing beds about 8° southwest. The ore body is generally 4 to 8 feet thick but in a few places is as much as 20 feet thick it is being developed by a series of strike drifts and dip inclines, driven within the ore stratum on about 100-foot centers. A haulage level driven beneath the ore body is connected by raises to the upper workings.

"INTRODUCTION Geological examination of the Iron Mountain beryllium deposits was begun by a field part 3/ of the Federal Geological Survey in May 1942. Later in that month the occurrence was examined by the author and C. H. Johnson, of the Bureau of Mines, and a preliminary exploratory program was outlined. Trenching and sampling began about June 15 and were completed in July 1942. A large tonnage of beryllium-bearing material was indicate by this preliminary survey, so that additional funds wore allotted for further trenching and sampling, underground exploratory work, and diamond drilling. The U.s. Bureau of Mines is conducting research to optimize the utilization and design of mine roof support systems. This report describes methods to evaluate resultant loading on longwall shields, defined as external resultant vertical and horizontal force acting on the canopy and base. Four models are considered: two rigid-body models, an elastic model, and a numerical model. The rigid-body models equate measured internal shield forces to unknown external resultant shield forces (loads) through rigid-body analysis of static equilibrium requirements. The elastic model develops a solution to shield mechanics by evaluation of the load-displacement relationship and stiffness characteristics of the support structure. The numerical model is a two-dimensional finite-element representation of a shield structure. Model determination of resultant shield loading is compared to controlled loading of a shield in the Bureau's mine roof simulator. Parameters investigated are shield height, canopy contact configuration, canopy and base horizontal constrainment, and boundary conditions imposed by vertical and horizontal shield displacements. It is concluded that rigid-body models are most applicable to in situ measurement of shield loading. Applications requirements and potential error sources are discussed.

It is estimated that 6,202,235,000 gallons .of- gasoline was produced during the year 1922. The crude light oil- output Burin- the same year is estimated at 111,000,000 gallons, or 1.8 per cent of the gasoline production. In fact, if all the coal mined were coked in by-product ovens, and the light oil recovered therefrom, this product would amount to only 15 to 20 per cent of the quantity of the petroleum gasoline now produced annually. It is obvious therefore, from these figures that the light oils by present coking processes can not assume great importance as a gasoline substitute in a national sense. However, the use of light oil as a motor fuel is of real importance in districts adjacent to by-product coking operations from which a reasonable proportion of the local motor fuel supply may be derived. The certainty of diminution of petroleum resources in the relatively near future demands the utmost utilization of gasoline substitutes from the distillation of coal as well as other sources. Motor benzol is a by-product from the destructive distillation of coal. From 11/2 to 3 gallons of refined motor benzol is obtained per ton of coal carbonized. The light oil vapors are extracted from the by-product coke-oven gas by passing it upward through a series of towers in which these vapors are absorbed in a descending current of "wash" oil (petroleum distillate). The light, oil is recovered from this wash oil by distillation with live steam, the resulting crude light oil consisting of a mixture of benzol, toluol, xylol, solvent naphtha, and a small amount of other substances (unsaturated hydro-carbons, carbon disulphide, and other sulphur compounds, phenols and pyridines) is then transferred to an intermittent still and fractionated into crude motor benzol, which includes the toluol and a part of the xylol or light solvent naphtha. The crude, motor benzol is yellow in color, contains sulphur compounds which corrode copper and brass, and also contains unsaturated bodies which oxidize and polymerize on standing, producing sediment and forming gummy deposits highly objectionable when the benzol is used in motors. Several laboratory flotation tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a sample of unweathered diorite from the B. F. Camden property, Amherst County, Va. Results showed that an ilmenite concentrate analyzing 45.5 percent Ti02 (titania), 0.07 percent P205 (phosphorus pentoxide), and 2.21 percent Si02 (silicon dioxide) could be produced from a feed containing 7.72 percent Ti02 and 3.94 percent P205. Ti02 recovery in the concentrate was 47.6 percent in a batch test. The weathered saprolite material overlying the diorite required scrubbing and desliming to remove argillaceous material and preliminary flotation of apatite followed by flotation of ilmenite. The resulting concentrate analyzed 47.3 percent Ti02, 0.19 percent P205, and 0.99 percent Si02 from a starting feed of 8.99 percent Ti02 and 3.37 percent P205; TiO2 recovery was 54.5 percent.
