Iron foundries that melt automobile scrap produce flue dusts averaging about 32 percent zinc and 6 percent lead. Some is sold to smelters, but because of the meager return and difficulty in handling, most of the dust is discarded. As part of the Bureau of Mines program to find uses for mineral wastes, research was initiated to develop an economical process to recover zinc and lead from the flue dust. Research encompassed the extraction of zinc and lead by fuming, leaching, and agglomeration. Controlled vacuum fuming of zinc to produce Prime Western zinc and a lead-rich residue was the most effective method for treating the dust. This process involved two distillations, or fumings, with carbon and methane as reductants, and resulted in recovery of 91.4 percent of the zinc in a Prime Western grade product, and 98 percent of the lead. Hydrometallurgical techniques involved several leaching methods, but the simultaneous extraction of iron, manganese, and copper resulted in contamination of the solution and made the zinc recovery processes too complicated. Agglomeration was done by pelletizing or briquetting the dust for possible use as feed to a zinc smelter.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation into the occurrence of outbursts of salt known to be responsible for explosions, fatalities, and damage in domal salt mines. The purpose of the investigation was to develop a basis for predicting these outbursts based on geologic and associated physical properties of salt. The investigation was conducted at the Cote Blanche salt mine in southern Louisiana. Because outbursts are the primary mode of methane emission into the mine, more than 80 outbursts, ranging in size from 1 to 50 ft in diameter have been mapped. These outbursts generally are aligned and elongate parallel to the direction of salt layering. More than 200 salt samples, both random and selected, were tested for methane content. It was found that outburst zones are well correlated with high methane content. Detailed mapping also revealed that the zones are well defined, with salt crystal size abruptly increasing upon entry into the zone. The intensity of folding and kinking of the salt layering within the outburst zone also appears to increase. An interbedded sand layer occurring throughout the mine does not appear to be a significant source of methane. However, fine-grained salt may be related to outburst occurrence.

Flotation studies of phosphate-bearing waste pond materials, low-grade washer products, and raw ores, all from the Tennessee brown phosphate district, showed that these types of materials could be treated without des liming to recover high-grade phosphate concentrates. The investigation showed that fine grinding before flotation was a requisite for increased recovery of the phosphate values and that the optimum pH conditions were in the range of 10.0 to 10.5 when using anionic collectors. Multiple-cleaning of the rougher phosphate concentrate was required to produce high-grade concentrates. Phosphate recoveries ranged from 60 to 82 percent and were inversely related to the grade of concentrate produced.

The Bureau of Mines and United States Steel Corp. are conducting a joint project to monitor formation pressures at a large (23-well) coal- bed gas drainage field near Oak Grove, AL. Three monitor holes were drilled in late 1981, and pressure monitoring began in December 1981. The Bureau of Mines direct method was used to obtain gas content data from cores taken in the monitor holes. Comparison of the 1981 gas con- tent data from the monitor holes with initial gas content values obtain- ed from the production wells in 1977 indicates a 50-pct reduction in ad- sorbed gas content inside the pattern and a 29-pct reduction at one point 500 ft outside the pattern. The combination of pressure and gas content data has also allowed an in situ isotherm curve, relating the formation pressure to adsorbed gas content, to be developed for the area of the production wells. From the current rate of pressure decline (1 lbf/inz per month), the observed changes in gas content, and the isotherm curve, it appears that most of the early gas production came from within the pattern, but since 1981 (and possibly earlier) most of the gas produced has been migrating to the wells from outside the pattern area.

This paper presents several case studies in which a mechanics-based boundary-element program is used to back-calculate the surface subsidence associated with various panels at several northern Appalachian coal mines. The program used in this case study is called LAMODEL, which incorporates a frictionless, laminated overburden into a general-purpose displacement-discontinuity code primarily designed for calculating the stresses and displacements in coal mines or other thin-seam or vein-type deposits. In this paper, the program is used to calculate both the underground convergence and the resulting surface subsidence at five longwall panels and a room-and-pillar section. The fitted subsidence from the model is compared with the field measurements and analyzed. The results from this work show that the LAMODEL program is not as accurate as available empirical subsidence-predictive methods: the expected correlation between the geology and the optimum input parameters is not evident. However, for a mechanics-based program, LAMODEL does provide moderately accurate subsidence calculations, and it is one of a few programs that can even attempt to practically calculate both underground stress and convergence and the resulting surface subsidence.

Smoky River Coal Ltd. mines low-volatile metallurgical coal by surface and underground methods in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada. Current underground operations are confined to the 5B-4 Mine. Development of 5B-4 began in January 1998; production from depillaring sections commenced in July 1998. This paper describes the history of underground mining on the Smoky River property in terms of extraction methods and pillar design. The development of the present pillar design guidelines is discussed in this context. Recent work to prepare a number of case histories for back-analysis using the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) method is described, along with the modifications developed for calculating the ARMPS stability factor for retreat extraction of thick seams. The design criteria are described, as well as the geotechnical program implemented in order to verify its applicability.

The results of full-scale fire tests are used to determine optimum distributions of fire sensors for the protection of conveyor belt haulageways in underground coal mines. Empirical relationships are derived that relate the spacing of fire sensors to the rate of development of the fire hazard. For this application, a critical fire size is defined as that size of fire for which belt ignition and subsequent flame spread down the belt is assured. Detection and alarm, regardless of sensor type or sensing methodology, must be achieved at some point in time before the critical fire size is reached. Based upon this approach, it is found that the horizontal spacing for products-of-combustion sensors is in the range of 300 to 600 meters, while the required thermal sensor spacing is found to be ~4 meters or less. Additional design criteria are discussed for product-of-combustion fire sensing systems.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the mineral matter content of 38 American coals using X-ray fluorescence. Measurements of the Ka intensity for magnesium, aluminum, silicon, sulfur, calcium, and iron permit the determination of those elements as well as an indirect determination of the ash con-tent of the coals. The percentage of each of the six elements was corrected for absorption by all six elements as well as by hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. It made little difference whether the values used for hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen were obtained from chemical analysis or whether average values for all coals were used. In all cases, oxygen was obtained by difference. The correction for absorption by all these elements involved the inversion of a 6 X 6 matrix and was performed by computer. Assuming that the elements magnesium, aluminum, silicon, calcium, and iron were present in the ash as oxides, the quantity of ash was determined. The results for the mineral elements as well as for ash and oxygen were in good agreement with chemical results. Particle size was found to have a significant effect on fluorescence intensities. A study of size effects was made for pyrite particles, since the sulfur content of coals is of particular interest. Theoretical equations were derived and verified relating the intensity to particle size. It was found that the coal samples must be ground to less than 2 microns. Sulfur appears in several forms in coal, and the effect of sulfur form on intensity was investigated. It was found that the Ka intensity was independent of sulfur form but the Kß intensity varied with the type of sulfur. Thus, the Ka intensity was used for determination of the quantity of sulfur present. Utilization of the sulfur KB intensity did not permit a determination of the proportions of sulfur forms present in coal. However, for synthetic mixtures of cystine and pyrite in carbon black, measurement of sulfur Ka and Kß permit determination of each constituents from measurements of sulfur intensities alone.

Sponge iron is the metallic product resulting from the reduction (removal of combined oxygen) of iron ore or other iron oxides at a temperature below the fusion point of iron. It has been used for many years in the production of certain grades of high-quality steel, such as tool and cutlery steels. The sponge iron available commercially in limited quantities for such use was produced from high-grade ores that were almost free from the contaminating elements that are generally considered detrimental to the production of certain grades of carbon tool steel. Interest in sponge iron as a scrap substitute was revived when World War II began, when the serious shortage of scrap metals for use in the production of armament caused great concern as to whether steel production could be maintained at the rate necessary for vigorous prosecution of the war effort. The methane emissions from an advancing coal mine section were continuously monitored for 120 days. During this time, the section advanced 2,000 feet into virgin Pittsburgh coalbed producing 54,565 tons of coal with a total methane emission of 91 million ft3. Analysis of the data gathered showed that daily methane emissions did not correlate with overburden thickness and daily coal production. A good correlation was found between the daily methane emission and the average length of rib exposed to virgin coal.

The mineral industry consisted primarily of natural gas production and of urea fertilizer, which was manufactured for domestic agriculture. Copper and iron deposits were being developed. Information regarding the mineral industry of Afghanistan was sparse. The Government continued to emphasize the development of mineral resources that could benefit the economy of the U.S.S.R. and repay Soviet grants. The northern half of the country, north of the Hindu Kush mountain range and adjacent to the U.S.S.R., received considerable Soviet aid to develop mineral resources.

The modest mineral industry of Afghanistan continued to suffer adversely from internal disorders that were essentially the result of the continued presence of elements of the armed forces of the U.S.S.R. Despite press reports near yearend intimating that the Soviets might reduce troop strength in Afghanistan, there were no indications of any significant numeric reductions. Indeed, there were clear demonstrations of heightened military actions along the Afghani-Pakistani border, including bombing raids on settlement sites for Afghanis within the territorial limits of Pakistan, actions hardly demonstrative of conditions indicative of Soviet withdrawal.

"SUMMARY This mine, which was discovered in 1846, was active in the 1850's, in the 1870's, and again in 1883. Since this last date, it has been idle. Two parallel bed-veins in lower Silurian limestone, about 50 feet apart, strike N. 70° E. and dip 70° NW. The north vein had an average width of 12 feet to a depth of 50 feet, where it was barren. The south vein had an average width of 16 feet to a depth of 75 feet; on the 110-foot level, although well-defined it carried little or no values. The zinc content of the ore was as high as 12 percent, and some lead and silver were associated with it. A reduction plant for production of spelter and zinc oxide was constructed at the mine. The only available record of production is for 1873 to 1876, inclusive, when 357 tons of smelter was shipped. The mine is caved and inaccessible, and nothing now remains of the treatment plant.Four holes totaling 1,046 feet wore diamond-drilled to probe for extensions of the ore in depth. Core recovery was about 85 percent. "INTRODUCTION The Cline mine has been worked intermittently for copper and gold since 1895. Scheelite has recently been detected with the aid of a ""Mineralite"" on the old waste dumps of the mine. Four diamond-drill holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines from August 13 to September 25, 1946. Ingots of zirconium and other highly reactive metals such as titanium and hafnium produced by the consumable-electrode arc-melting process require conditioning before forging or rolling. A nondestructive, arc-conditioning technique has been developed as a substitute for lathe conditioning. The technique employs en electric arc under an inert atmosphere to fuse surface metal on the sidewalls of ingots without seriously affecting the general quality of the ingots. Advantages of the practice are Increased yields, lower accumulation of inferior scrap, and actual cost savings. The work cited in this report was done on zirconium. INTRODUCTION The consumable-electrode arc-melting process as practiced at the Bureau of Mines3 4/ has proved to be a technique for producing sound, homogeneous, commercial-size ingots of zirconium and its alloys. Ingots produced by this process, however, have as a characteristic a layer of partly fused metal on the sidewall to a depth of 3/16 to 3/8 inch. To prevent extension of surface imperfections during forging, the ingots are ordinarily conditioned by removing defective material in a lathe. If the metal were less reactive or the requirements less severe, the machine chips could be recycled and remelted. However, zirconium, being so oxygen sensitive, is contaminated by merely being machined despite extensive cooling of the tool bit. Further, being contaminated with oxygen, the chip metal upon remelting is 10 to 25 Brinell-hardnese numbers harder than the ingot from which it was machined. For this reason, the ingot specifications for naval reactor use have prohibited remelting machine chips, except as required for starting pads. Again, were zirconium less costly or less in demand this ever-increasing pile could be burned to oxide and recycled through the Kroll sponge process. Economics do not favor this, as melting feed stock has an estimated increase In value over oxide of about $8.80 per pound of contained zirconium. The efforts of the Bureau to solve the problem have been directed along two lines: To reduce the contamination of the machine chips produced and to reduce the quantity of the chips produced. This paper presents the technique developed to reduce the quantity of chips produced by arc-conditioning the remelted ingot.

Mining and reclamation procedures that meet the requirements of SMCRA are illustrated on pages 8 and 9 for each of the three major surface coal mining methods -- area mining, contour mining, and mountaintop removal mining. The three methods involve the same basic steps: clearing the land of trees and other vegetation, removing topsoil and overburden, mining the coal, and reclaiming the land. Although all three methods would not usually occur on any single site, the illustration facilitates comparison of mining and reclamation methods and aids basic understanding of the reclamation processes that take place under SMCRA. Area Mining The area mining method is commonly used to mine coal in the flat to moderately rolling terrain found principally in the western and midwestern states. After the overburden is excavated down to a coal seam, the mining area is enlarged horizontally to expose more coal for removal. In the West, where coal seams are commonly 10 to 20 feet thick (and range up to 100 feet thick in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming), the life of some mines maybe more than 50 years. In the Midwest, coal seams are typically 3 to 7 feet thick and 75 to 100 feet below the surface. Because of the large expanse of area mines and their relatively unrestricted sites, enormous equipment is used to remove overburden and reconstruct the land. The area mining operation in the illustration is on land that was formerly used for farming. The drawing shows that the agricultural use is being reestablished immediately following reclamation. Mining is proceeding across the land toward the left side of the site. The initial excavation was made far enough away from the stream along the right edge of the site to prevent damage to the water supply. The coal under most of the site has been removed, and reclamation has been completed on some of the land. For example, some of the cattle in the foreground and those in the feedlot behind the silo are grazing on reclaimed land that has been mined. At the far left of the illustration, topsoil from the unmined area is being removed by scrapers, transported across the area of active mining, and immediately spread on the land on the right, which is being reclaimed. (Reclamation of mined land as soon as practical, as required by the Act, is called contemporaneous reclamation.) A

This report presents a detailed lithologic description of the Big Lime, Keener, Big Injun, Weir, and Berea horizons from a well cored in the Spruce Creek oilfield, Ritchie County, W. Va. Well logs and results of core analysis are also included. The information was obtained during the Bureau of Mines continuing technical evaluation of selected Appalachian area oil reservoirs for increased ultimate recovery. The lithologic study of these important West Virginia oil and gas producing horizons was made on a 4-inch-diameter core. Commercial oil production was obtained by the well owner after the Big Injun horizon was successfully hydraulically fractured.

The Ecuadorean mineral sector and overall economy have retained their traditional dependence upon the production and export of hydrocarbon products. Exports of crude oil and its products accounted for 62% of the country's export earnings in 1985. Ecuador's major mineral commodities produced and exported were cement, gold, limestone, liquefied natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, natural gas, natural gasoline, crude petroleum and condensate, raw steel, semimanufactured steel products, and sulfur.

The objective of this U.S. Bureau of Mines hydrologic-subsidence investigation was to evaluate the effects of longwall mining on the local ground water regime through field monitoring and numerical modeling. Field data were obtained from multiple-position borehole extensometers (MPBX's) that were used to measure subsurface displacements. Survey monuments were installed to measure mining-induced surface deformations. Numerous drawdown and recovery tests were performed to characterize hydrologic properties of the overburden strata. Coreholes were drilled above the study area to determine lithologic and strength characteristics of the overburden strata using the rock samples collected. Electronic recorders were installed on all monitoring wells to continuously monitor ground water levels in coordination with mining of the longwall panels. A combined finite element model of the deformation of overlying strata, and it's influence on ground water flow was used to define the change in local and regional water budgets. The predicted effects of the postmining ground water system determined by the model correlated well with field data collected from the field site. Without an infiltration rate added to the model, a static decrease of 3.0 m (10 ft) in water level would occur due to mining of both longwall panels and if an infiltration rate was inputted in the model, no predicted long-term effects would occur to the ground water system.

Identify specific sources and the relative levels of contribution of various components of longwall shearer operations to the total airborne respirable dust generated during mining. Approach A research investigation was conducted in two phases by the Bureau of Mines at five mine sites to identify specific dust sources and their relative importance during long-wall shearing operations. During phase I of the project the specific longwall mining elements identified for evaluation were: cutting, sumping, tramming, conveying, and moving roof supports. During phase II of the project, two dust sources were evaluated: clearance ring cutters cutting in six-inch web width increments, and loading operations. Investigation Results As a result of dust measurements, the gage cutters were determined to be the major dust-generating source on the shearer. These cutters, at 6-inch web depth, produce three times as much dust per unit volume as is produced at 30 inches full web depth. The following list of averaged values for the mines tested shows that shearer cutting generated averaged dust levels four times as high as those generated by conveying, and approximately five times as high as those generated in moving roof supports.
