A procedure is described for recovering both lead and sulfur from galena flotation concentrate, comprising the following steps: (1) Aqueous oxidation of the concentrate, using ferric sulfate to convert lead sulfide to sulfate and to give elemental sulfur; (2) regeneration of the ferric sulfate by electrolysis in a diaphragm cell; (3) treatment of the leach residue with ammonium carbonate solution to change the lead to an acid-soluble form and to produce ammonium sulfate as a byproduct; (4) solution of the lead carbonate in hydro-fluosilicic acid followed by electrolysis to recover the lead as metal and regenerate the acid; and (5) extraction of the elemental sulfur from the final residue with an organic solvent. About 90 percent of the lead can be recovered by the above method as 99.9-percent-pure metal, together with two-thirds of the sulfur--half in the elemental form and half as ammonium sulfate.

To reduce fatalities resulting from personnel falling into voids formed above feeders in coal piles, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health at the Spokane Research Laboratory established a project to monitor coal surge piles to detect the formation of voids. A resistivity imaging method has been developed by GECOH Exploration, of Lexington, KY, in which a geophysical technique known as vertical electrical sounding (VES) is used to scan for these voids. VES operates by measuring the electrical field produced by a current in the ground at the bottom of the coal pile. This paper summarizes the results obtained from a field-scale test and shows that mapping voids within a coal pile is possible.

This report deals with the processing and marketing of iron and steal scrap in the intermountain States of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming and the northwestern Plains States of Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The quantity and quality of iron and steel scrap consumed in both the steel mills and iron foundries in these States in 1964 were decided by (1) the type of facilities used to produce an end product; (2) the availability of a dependable source of iron and steel scrap at competitive prices; and (3) the, ratio of the cost of iron in iron ore to iron in scrap. In recent years the quantity of scrap used per ton of steel ingot produced has decreased. The major individual. consumers of iron and steel scrap were the steel mills in Arizona, Colorado, and Utah, foundries in Utah and Arizona, and copper leaching, operations in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. About 2 million tons of iron and steel scrap was used by the iron and steel industry in 1964. Although there has been a decline in the amount of scrap used per ton of steel ingot produced because of changes in steelmaking methods, there has been a slight increase in the overall quantity of scrap used because of the increase in ingot production. It is estimated that the scrap consumption in the steel industry will increase by 19 percent by 1980. In addition to the scrap consumed by the steel industry, 273,000 tons of ferrous scrap were used by copper-leaching operations. Thirty-one percent of the ferrous scrap used by the steel industry in 1964 was purchased from dealers and other sources. The CF&I Steel Corp. (formerly The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corp.) at Pueblo, Colo., complemented its blast- and open-hearth-furnace operations with basic-oxygen converters in 1962. The basic-oxygen and open-hearth furnaces were charged with 30 and 90 percent scrap, respectively. Future use of the open-hearths would probably be used to supplement ingot production requirements. Because it was more economical to use less scrap and a high molten-metal charge, the United States Steel Corp. at Geneva, Utah, which uses the open-hearth process to make steel, charges the furnaces with 25 to 35 percent scrap. The Allison Steel Manufacturing Co. at Tempe, Ariz., uses a 100 percent scrap charge in its electric furnace. Although it was estimated that there were 327,000 tons of various grades of motor vehicle scrap generated in 1963, no estimates were made concerning the total quantity and grade of scrap available in the area. Most of the scrap used in the steelmaking industry originated within the area. It was advantageous to sell scrap generated in eastern Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota to markets in the Midwest because of freight costs.

Etching solutions containing hexavalent chromium ions (e.g., chromic acid) are used in brass finishing, printed circuit board etching, preparation of plastic for plating, anodizing, and various other industrial surface treatment operations. As the solutions are used, hexavalent chromium ions are reduced to their trivalent state, contaminants accumulate in the solution, and the effective acid concentration is reduced. When the etching rate becomes unsatisfactory for the particular operation, the solutions are discarded. This is a problem because the discarded solutions are pollutants, and because replacing the etching solution is expensive. The Bureau of Mines has developed a process for regenerating these spent solutions and returning them to the surface treatment operation without interrupting the etching process. An electrolysis cell containing anode and cathode compartments that are separated by permeable membranes, is used for regenerating the spent solutions. The spent chromic acid solution is fed to the anode compartment and sui (uric acid is circulated in the cathode compartment. Application of a steady electrical potential of a few volts dc across the electrodes causes the copper ions and other contaminants in the spent solution to migrate through the membrane to the cathode compartment where copper is plated onto the cathode. Zinc and the other contaminants remain in the sulfuric acid. At the same time, the complex, trivalent chromium ions in the spent solution are attracted to the anode where they are oxidized to their original hexavalent state. The regenerated solution in the anode compartment is then recycled back to the plant?s etching operation for reuse.

This report, which updates and supersedes the Office of Surface Mining's 10-year progress report published in 1987, deals with the accomplishments of the regulatory and abandoned mine land reclamation programs during the first 15 years of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA). Part 1 is an illustrated description of on-the-ground accomplishments; Part 2 presents statistical information for the 15-year period. The data in this statistical report are organized in two sections: national statistics and state statistics. The national statistics provide an overview of coal mining and the implementation of SMCRA since 1977. The information reported for the states presents a brief description of the coal reserves in each area, accompanied by detailed statistics and graphs that relate each state to the nation as a whole. The statistics compiled in this report are from the Office of Surface Mining's files, computer data systems, and annual reports. During the early years of the program, many of the data categories were evolving and changing; therefore, data reported over the 15-year period are not complete for all states for all years, and where data was unavailable or zero, a dash (-) is shown for that item. The data sources used to compile the tables and graphs are listed and described in detail on page 76. Due to the number of requests for this information in the past, statistical information about coal mining and its regulation will be available each year as an appendix to the Office of Surface Mining's Annual Report to Congress. Results of the analyses of 151 crude oils from 123 oilfields in the Williston basin are presented. Production statistics are compiled by geographical areas within the basin, by geological age of the producing zones, by States, and by field for the nine fields with the greatest production. Characteristics of the oils are tabulated, and correlations are included to show relationships between properties of the oils and some factors in the environment. Properties of the oils in some instances imply that there has been migration and mixing of the oils between productive formations of different geological time periods.

Important contributions can be made to conservation of natural resources by recovering mineral values from primary and secondary metallurgical slimes and flue dusts. This applies particularly to ultrafine mineral particles that escape recovery by conventional mineral dressing. In the interest of economy and conservation the Bureau of Mines is investigating fundamental properties of ultrafine mineral values in slimes as a means of developing new or improved methods of mineral recovery. The work described in this progress report was carried on in the Bureau's laboratories at Rolla, Mo., from 1951 to 1953. The mineral material used as a subject for study was tin-ore slimes. DESCRIPTION OF TIN SLIMES The tin slimes consist principally of quartz, with appreciable quantities of tourmaline and sericite mica and small amounts of cassiterite, pyrite, hematite, and arsenopyrite. The tin content is approximately 0.5 percent.

During 1940 and 1941, the Bureau of Mines examined a large number of silver mines in Arizona for their potential as producers of manganese ores. Although very little manganese ore had been produced from these mines, it was generally known that manganese oxides in appreciable amounts were associated with the silver ore. Following the examinations, the Bureau further investigated some of the ore deposits by diamond drilling and other types of sampling. The results of these investigations, from the viewpoint of manganese, were discouraging. However, the investigations did indicate that appreciable tonnages of manganese-silver ores had been left in some of the mines by earlier operators. Most of these ores were too low-grade for direct shipping as ores of manganese or silver, and their beneficiation by ordinary processes was not economic. Exploitation of the ores appeared to be dependent upon the development of a low-cost milling method, which would yield a marketable manganese product and recover a high percentage of the silver. Later, the Bureau of Mines constructed an experimental mill at Salt Lake City, Utah, for the treatment of manganiferous ores by the dithionate process, designed to recover manganese as a high-grade product. The dithionate residues can be treated by other processes for the recovery of additional values that may be present in the ore. This development focused attention on the manganese-silver ores of Arizona and led to setting up Bureau project No. 370, which is the subject of this report.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a hydrometallurgical procedure to recover Co, Ni, and Cu from an electrolytic zinc industrial copper filter cake. The copper filter cake is presently unmarketable or of low value because economic and environmentally acceptable processing technology is lacking. Research by the Bureau of Mines has developed a multistage process for recovering or recycling over 93 pct of the Zn, Cd, Cu, Co, and Ni from this material. The stages involved are (1) wet sizing, (2) H2S04 leaching of undersized material, (3) H2S04-Mn02 leaching of H2S04 leach residue, (4) selective precipitation of As, Cu, and Co-Ni products, and (5) precipitation of manganese for recycling to the leach circuit. The final process residue is only 1.6 wt-pct of the initial cake and consists of lead sulfate.

The purpose of this work was to Investigate the rate at which coal is delivered from the underground working face by gathering arm type loaders as employed on continuous mining machines, to identify the factors - geometrical , geological, mechanical, or procedural - which affect the delivery rate, and to develop quantitative rate-descriptive equations for the loading function. The mathematical techniques employed were factor analysis and multiple linear regression. It was determined that the coal-cutting function of the continuous mining machine is the factor that primarily Influences the loading function The geometrical factors -the dimensions of the work area In relation to the dimensions of the mining machine -were the factors of secondary influence. Fifty-five percent of the experimental variation in the loading function was explained in terms of the six most prominent Independent variables. It is expected that this work will be useful In operations-research studies as applied to underground coal mining, and with refinement will enable mine planners to select equipment based on the operating characteristics of the equipment and the mining conditions.

Methane flows and pressures were measured in mines in the Pittsburgh, Hartshorne, and Pocahontas No. 3 coalbeds. From the data, the permeability of each of these coalbeds was computed. It was found to depend strongly on the type of coal and on the amount of water in the coalbed, and it was found to increase with time. All of the coalbeds had a high-permeability zone adjacent to the face or rib, and the Pittsburgh bed exhibited directional anisotropy. Surprisingly, little or no overburden effect was observed.

The empirical nature of this investigation required measurements of variables under operating conditions in underground coal mines. The variables to be measured were based on the postulated character¬istics of the loading function, as described in the previous chapter. One class of variables presumed to influence the loading function are geological variables. Accordingly, the sites for data collection were selected in different bituminous coal seams at dispersed locations in order that variation in geological conditions would exist. Seven mines in central and western Pennsylvania and one mine in northern West Virginia were selected as data collection sites. Five different coal seams were represented by these mines. The remaining classes of variables - geometric, mechanical, and procedural - were measured as they occurred in the mines. A description of the measurements, and the conversion of these measurements to forms which could be-analyzed for effect on the loading function is given. Mining Dimensions At the underground working face, the following dimensions were measured: a. Thickness of coal excavated. b. Thickness of shale excavated. c. Total height excavated. d. Width excavated. e. Depth of penetration of each machine cut. With the exception of the last of these dimensions, all were measured

The Bureau of Mines is investigating a method of dewatering flocculated fine-particle waste that involves treating the waste with a high molecular-weight polymer such as polyethylene oxide (PED) followed by dewatering on a static screen and/or in a trommel. Dilution of the polymer solution used for dewatering and use of the ion-exchanged form of the montmorillonite clay were found to be major factors determining the amount of polymer required to dewater clay-containing slurries. The amount of polymer, A, required to dewater ion-exchanged montmorillonite can be described by the equation, An = kC + b where n, k, and b are empirical constants and C is the concentration of the polymer solution used for dewatering. Clays that require large amounts of polymer for dewatering also dewater to a lower solids content. The concentration of the polymer solution is important because it affects the radius of the polymer coil in solution and hence its ease of transfer to a bridging configuration by shear. The constant, n, a function of the charge to hydrated radius of the exchange ion, relates to the strength of the bond between the polymer and the surface of the clay through a water bridge. The constant k is related to the hydrated radi-us for sodium or to the unhydrated radius for the other exchange ions.

Federal law mandates that all miners receive safety and health training when first entering the mining industry and at least 8 hours annually thereafter. Although the mining industry has historically relied on an experiential master-apprentice model for training new employees, the formal safety training provided to miners is generally done in a classroom, with mixed results. In a series of stakeholder meetings held by NIOSH across the West in 1997-2000, trainers identified significant gaps in materials that were available to teach new and experienced miners. They asked whether NIOSH could develop effective materials to fill these perceived gaps, as well as make training more effective for those who were required to attend, but who often refused to be attentive. Adult learning theories, social learning theories, mentoring, and storytelling were all employed in the development of a series of safety training videos that have become very popular in the mining industry. This Report of Investigations describes the theoretical frameworks that were used, the process that was developed to produce the videos, and the results of the evaluations as to whether or not they were effective in training new and experienced miners.

Project 984 was set up under the strategic minerals program to make old workings accessible for this sampling program. Actual operations commenced June 1, 1944, and were completed June 30, 1944.The deposit was visited and discussed briefly by Sidney H. Ball 3/ of the Federal Geological Survey in the summer of 1906 and by H. M. A method for concentration of the nickel-cobalt-bearing mineral, siegenite, from a table middling has been developed by the Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo. The table middling is composed of a complex series of sulfide minerals, occurring in mill operations in the southeast Missouri "lead belt." In these operations the siegenite is lost as a separate concentrate, being diverted to other products. The procedure also includes recovering commercial-grade concentrates of copper and lead. A low-grade zinc concentrate, a potential coproduct, was also made.

For 1991, the aggregate value of world international export trade in mineral commodities was roughly estimated at $685 billion in current 1991 dollars. The estimated level was about 6 % higher than that for 1990, but still more than 3 % below the record high set in 1980, and the year was the fifth in a row in which the value of exported minerals advanced. Table 8 provides a data series for the estimated value of world export trade in all mineral commodities from 1979 through 1991, as well as a breakdown of this total into fuel and non fuel commodities. The data shown are based on the historically more traditional and realistic (from the viewpoint of data availability) practice of reporting trade values for the year before the year of review. Despite the considerable increase in the dollar value of mineral commodity exports, their share of total export merchandise trade declined to 19.1 % in 1990 from 19.7% in 1989. At 19.1 %, this share was very near the recent year record low of 19.0% reached in 1988. Comparable 1991 figures were not available in time for inclusion here, but it is expected that the mineral commodity share of the total will be little altered from that of 1990.

The Big Four mine, about three-quarters of a mile northeast of the prospect, is the only active mine in the immediate area.A resistivity survey was made of a portion of the prospect by the Division of Geophysical Exploration, Bureau of Mines, in May and June 1946. As a result of this survey, five holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines during the period from October 8 to December 16, 1946. The Federal Bureau of Mines is publishing a series of studies on the methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. This report describes the longwall-mining methods and techniques used at the Radon mine, Big Indian district, San Juan County, Utah. The tabular Radon ore body lies on the southwest flank of the Lisbon Valley anticline, strikes N. 10° W., dips 7° SW., and has an average thickness of 4-1/2 to 5 ft. The mine is developed by a three-compartment vertical shaft, a haulage level driven beneath the ore, and a system of drifts driven within and parallel to the strike of the ore.
