Study Design. A split-plot experimental design was used to evaluate the influence of posture, trunk angle, and rotational velocity on peak torque output and myoelectric activity during maximal trunk extension maneuvers. Objectives. To determine whether the kneeling posture alters extension torque capabilities in isometric and isokinetic exercises as compared with standing. Also, to ascertain whether recruitment of trunk muscles is modified by such a postural change. Summary of Background Data. Factors such as workplace geometry may force workers to adopt awkward or unusual postures in the performance of manual tasks. An understanding of the limitations placed on strength in unconventional working postures is crucial to the proper design of jobs. Methods. Twenty-one healthy male subjects (mean age = 36 years 7 SD) performed 12 trunk extension exertions in standing and kneeling postures. Isometric tests were performed at 22.5°. 45°, and 67.5° of trunk flexion. isokinetic tests were done at three velocities: 30°/sec, 60°/sec, and 90°/sec. Electromyographic data were collected from eight trunk muscles to assess muscle recruitment under each condition. A prior; orthogonal contrasts were specified for analysis of both torque and electromyographic data. Results. The kneeling posture was associated with a 15% decrease in peak torque output when contrasted with standing; however, no concomitant change in trunk muscle activity was evident. Trunk hyperflexion (isometric tests) and increasing rotational velocity (isokinetic tests) were associated with reduced torque in both postures. Trunk muscle activity was primarily affected by changes in trunk angle and velocity of contraction. Conclusions. A reduced extensor capability exists in the kneeling posture, despite equivalent trunk muscle activity. The similar activation patterns in both postures suggest that the strength deficit does not result from alterations in trunk muscle function. Rather, it may be the consequence of a reduced capability to rotate the pelvis in the kneeling posture, due to a disruption of the biornechanical linkage of the leg structures. The oil shale from the Mahogany zone of the Green River formation in northwestern Colorado has the greatest potential in the United States for early utilization. A large reserve of adequately rich shale is available to support a sizable industry, and crushing of tremendous tonnages will be required if conventional processing methods are used. This report presents Bureau of Mines data on crushing experiments, physical properties, and related information for Colorado oil shale. Among the properties important to crushing are slab-forming tendency, resilience, slippery character of the richer grades, and heterogeneous nature of an average charge of Colorado oil shale.

This Bureau of Mines report estimates the population of the principal types of machinery in use by the coal mining industry during 1982 in surface and underground mines. Estimates were arrived at using 1976 coal equipment population estimates as baseline data with modifications made for new mine development, expansion, and closure occurring during 1976-82. Estimates were broken down into 3 regions which included all 26 coal-producing States. Modifications made to the baseline data were computed using (1) actual equipment information when available, plus (2) equipment information hypothesized from representative generic mine models, which were predicated on mine size and mine method. Roughly half of the equipment fleet at new or expanding coal operations was known; the remainder was hypothesized. The mine models used to generate equipment information are included in this report, along with the hypothesized equipment use data. The equations and various factors used to determine the equipment adjustments for mine closings, new mine openings, and small coal mine operations are also identified.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of anthracite from the Mammoth and Holmes veins in Schuylkill County, Pa., as determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines laboratory separations at specific gravities of 1.50 to 1.90. The Holmes vein anthracite contains approximately 13 percent ash, and the Mammoth vein contains about 9 percent as fed to the breaker. Crushing Broken, Egg, and Stove sizes from each vein produces Pea-size anthracite of lower ash content than that contained in Buckwheat No.1 size and smaller. The Buck-wheat No.5 size has the highest ash content of all the sizes examined. Potential recovery from a mixture of the two veins as received at the breaker, separated at 1.90 specific gravity, is approximately 64 percent of the feed at 11.0 percent ash. The same materials separated at 1.80 specific gravity yield about 61 percent with an ash content of 10.1 percent. All rejects are from the Holmes vein, because the entire Mammoth material is less than 10.0 percent ash.

Geology is an integral part of roof control, mine design, and production operations. Yet, the importance of geology, coal/rock as an engineering construction material and its properties and behavior within the planned mine areas, in overall mine production operations has not been hilly appreciated. Of all of the engineering disciplines, mining engineers work with the most challenging construction materials. They must deal with rock materials as they exist in their natural states and design mine structures without well-known and defined properties. Further complicating the design process is the variability of the in-situ rock materials with rock types and rock properties varying widely from place-to-place. Predicting properties in advance of mining is difficult and oftentimes impossible. This is why some types of roof-control failures may suddenly occur in some areas when a single roof-control technique is consistently applied to an entire panel, section, or mine. Many roof-control techniques are primarily applicable to the geological conditions that were assumed in the development of those techniques and variations of the rocker rock properties may require modification or significant redesign of the support technology.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U. S. economy. The USBM's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the USBM survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

Provide the National Park Service (NPS) with guidelines for closing abandoned mine openings such as shafts and adits. Approach The NPS needed alternative methods of closing a variety of abandoned mine openings on National Park lands. Because the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has a long history of mining-related experience, the NPS requested that the Bureau provide them with technical mine closure information. USBM engineers compiled information on various types of mine closures and prepared technical illustrations of those closure techniques. Multiple closure options, by type of opening, were prepared as one-page field guides to assist NPS field personnel in determining the most appropriate closure method for a given situation and detailing the construction of the closure method. Results Guidelines provided to the NPS included a description of the method, use applications, construction techniques, technical illustrations, and technical support information. The following provides a brief description of 11 mine closure techniques identified for use by NPS personnel. Most of the closure methods, except the backfill methods, allow for construction that can provide access to the mine. However, providing access makes the closure susceptible to vandalism. Most closure methods require periodic monitoring for subsidence and corrosion or deterioration of construction materials.

This report summarizes the results of laboratory testing of copper-bearing magnetite ore from the Poorman, Bush & Brown, and Copper Center deposits, Kasaan Peninsula, Prince of Wales Island, southeastern Alaska. The ores contain minor amounts of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Intimate association of these sulfides with magnetite necessitates fine grinding for adequate liberation and rejection of copper and sulfur and for the production of high-grade iron concentrate low in objectionable impurities. Laboratory tests indicated that the optimum results can be obtained by flotation of ore ground to minus-100-mesh, with subsequent wet magnetic separation treatment of the flotation tailing. A summary of results obtained by this treatment of the three samples tested is shown in table 1.

Gadolinium, dysprosium, and yttrium are difficult to electrowin as high-purity liquid metals because of their high melting points (>1,300° C). Samarium metal is difficult to prepare directly by electrolysis because the metal reacts with the electrolyte. In this Bureau of Mines study, the rare-earth metal was electrodeposited on a solid manganese, chromium, or iron cathode to form a low-melting alloy. The alloy was then vacuum distilled to separate the rare-earth metal from the ferrous metal. A typical samarium metal product, obtained as the distillate from vacuum distillation of a samarium-iron alloy, contained 150 ppm oxygen, 80 ppm carbon, and 50 ppm iron as impurities, Gadolinium metal, obtained as a residue from the distillation of a gadolinium-chromium alloy, contained 300 ppm oxygen, 200 ppm carbon, and 100 ppm chromium.

Develop a method for control of groundwater inflow to chronically "wet" sections of underground coal mines, in order to reduce groundwater interference with mining activity and to minimize acid mine drainage. Approach In eastern coal regions, groundwater stored in fracture zones in the rock mass can create a significant water problem for underground mining operations. Fracture stored inflow to mine workings impedes mine productivity since storage water sources usually release at the active face, creating the poor mining conditions typical of a "wet" section. Fracture water can also contribute to AMD problems when the water subsequently contacts sulfide minerals in the coal, The Bureau of Mines has developed a mine-dewatering method that eliminates many of the problems associated with mine water inflow by draining these fracture zones before the water can reach the developing face and interfere with mining activity. How it Works The dewatering method removes large volumes of the stored groundwater through high-capacity pumping from a minimal number of wells placed strategically on fracture traces (the surface expressions of fractured rock zones). These fracture traces are located through low-level aerial photographic and geologic investigation. As shown on the map, dewatering wells are sited precisely on fracture trace intersections in order to take advantage of the increased pumping capacity gained from these zones of high permeability. This report describes the development and application of a rail haulage simulator that is readily adaptable for the analysis of a wide variety of operating problems. Various gaming, options have been integrated into the model structure which permit trial and error solutions from a computer terminal prior to capital committment in the actual operation. The high level of information retrieval available allows engineers and managers to develop production data which fit individual needs. In this report, emphasis was placed on the problem of organizing and performing the sequence of operations that are necessary to accomplish a complete mine materials handling simulation. Here, the Rail Haulage Sub-assembly was linked to the Production Sub-system to mine and move coal from seven operating sections to the intermediate and main-line track. The analysis was devoted to the problems associated with how the operating system performs and what alternatives were available to minimize idle times and hence increase productivity. In order to have some objective means of evaluating which of the alter- native methods for production was most appropriate, the choice was to replace the intermediate track with belt conveyors. Since the attempt here was to demonstrate model flexibility and not to establish the goals or trade-offs between computing objectives with which systems judgement must contend, no further alternatives were tried. This is left to management with the data and a problem to solve. Rail haulage simulation is not new, and several, operationally tested models are being used in practice (Bucklen, et. al., 1968).

Public interest in atmospheric pollution by automobile exhaust gas and in the ventilation of vehicular tunnels makes it desirable to ascertain whether the use of modern automobile fuels is tending to change the amount and composition of the products of combustion. The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Ethyl Gasoline corporation4, has completed a series of testis to determine whether any significant difference exists in the carbon monoxide content of the exhaust gas produced by an internal-combustion engine when its fuel is changed from straight gasoline to the same gasoline containing Ethyl fluid whose active ingredient is tetraethyl lead. In the tests data was sought relative to the composition and mount of the gas produced by ordinary comparatively low-compression motors as well as by higher-compression motors in which distinct detonation occurred with straight gasoline, but which operated without detonation when using the same gasoline containing tetraethyl lead.

Develop a new method for coal mint pillar stability evaluation and design based on pillar load measurements. Approach A novel approach to chain pillar stability evaluation and design for longwall coal mining panels has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The evaluation approach uses an INTEGRITY FACTOR as the criterion for stability. Hydraulic borehole pressure cells developed by the Bureau are used to measure stresses in a pillar for stability evaluation. The results are used to improve the pillar design.

Three scale models of coal mine entries and mining machines were constructed by the Bureau of Mines to study the effects of ventilation parameters on dust concentrations where mining personnel would be working. A one-fifth-scale model of a coal mine entry with a drum-type continuous-mining machine and a one-sixth-scale model of an entry with a twin-borer-type machine were used as well as a one-fifth-scale model of a longwall face with a double-drum shearer. Methane was used as a tracer gas to simulate respirable dust in the models. The distance of the end of the brattice or tubing from the face was found to be more important than the airflow rate for the drum-type machine. Dust reductions greater than 90 pct were shown to be possible with a secondary ventilation system used with the twin borer and a dust collector mounted on the longwall shearer. Cutting-head speed had a significant effect on concentrations at typical positions of miners with the drum-type machine and longwall shearer but not for the twin borer.

Mass spectrometric analyses were obtained for naphthalene and anthracene oils, heavy creosote, and three fractions of a pitch. The average molecular weight, aromaticity, and mean structural unit were determined for each fraction. The investigation of these fractions of coal tar has resulted in semiquantitative data for 38 structural types and carbon number distribution data for their alkyl derivatives. The molecular weights of 10 of these structural types indicate ring systems not previously reported in products from high-temperature carbonization of coal. Two of these structures are poly-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, two are oxygen-containing compounds, one contains sulfur, and five are nitrogen-containing compounds.

The types of compounds present in aromatic concentrates derived from high-boiling petroleum distillates can be estimated from a gel permeation chromato-graphic (GPC) analysis by the use of tables developed from extensive GPC and mass-spectral analyses on fractions from four crude oils. For a fraction from the GPC analysis, the retention volume and the molecular weights (from mass spectrometer) suffice to indicate the types of compounds which predominate. The tables which show these qualitative analyses were developed through the use of pure compounds as well as the extensive analyses on Prudhoe Bay (Alaska), Gach Saran (Iran), Swan Hills (Canada), and Wilmington (California) crude oils. These tables provide a rapid method for determining which types of compounds are present in a GPC fraction before attempting to develop quantitative data.

The 18th National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest was held in the Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo, New Vork, October 5, 6, and 7, 1959. The meet was sponsored by the Federal Bureau of Mines and the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association, in cooperation with State mine inspection agencies, management and labor of the mineral extractive industries, and other safety minded groups. The Arrangements Committee, as authorized by the General Committee, made a11 the necessary arrangements for conducting the 1959 contest. Members of the Arrangements Committee were: Harry Gandy, Jr. (chairman), National Coal Association; James B. Benson, Southern Coal Producers' Association; Charles Ferguson, United Mine Workers of America; George C.
