Fires in metal mines have resulted in some of the worst disasters in American mining history insofar as loss of life is concerned. One fire caused the death of 163 miners and individual less spectacular fires have cost the lives of scores of workers. Metal mines are often very deep, and the men working on numerous levels far removed from direct communication with the surface. In many instances they cannot be warned quickly of an emergency or a mine fire by telephone or other usual method of communication, or by messenger, flashing lights, gongs, sirens, or whistles. Telephones are not paricularly effective as a means of warning unless placed at all strategic points and with attendants always on duty; though telephones well placed have a definite value in any well-pla.mied emergency procedure in mines of all kinds. Messengers are slow and men working in remote parts of a mine would not receive a warning quickly enough. Most metal mines are not electrically lighted, except at or adjacent to shaft stations and in principal haulageways, and this limits the effectiveness of flashing lights. Electric gongs and sirens or whistles have been tried as warning signals, but the sound is quickly deadened and does not travel upward into the stopes, especially those of an extensive volume. Shutting off the compressed air is by no means satisfactory as a warning, as not infrequently it is stopped accidently, so that it loses its value as an alarm. The introduction of water into compressed air lines is undesirable as a fire warning and necessitates considerable care, especially in deep mines; pressure-reducing valves must be provided to reduce pressure that otherwise would break connections or split the pipe. A quick, effective method of warning miners underground of the existence of an emergency requiring them to leave the mine immediately, such as a fire on the surface or underground, is provided by the introduction of stenches in the compressed-air lines. An important activity of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and industry . In connection with these activities , the Bureau determines the explosion hazards of combustible gases , liquids , and solids , and investigates means by which explosions may be eliminated or reduced in violence . The limits of inflammability and ignition temperatures of combustible gases , vapors , and solids are of practical importance because such materials can be manufactured , transported , and used with greater safety , provided the range of concentrations and temperatures that cause explosions are known. Acetic anhydride , ( CH3CO) 20 , with which this report is concerned , is a liquid at ordinary temperatures . It is used in the preparation of a number of organic chemicals and in the manufacture of photographic film and of artificial silk . It is perhaps the most important acetylating agent for industrial uses - a property that is especially important at this time because of its direct application in the manufacture of munitions . The sample tested was supplied by the Carbide & Carbon Chemicals Corporation . Its specific gravity was given as 1.083 at 20/20 . The vapor pressures , supplied by the manufacturer , are plotted in figure 1 .

This study of the preparation characteristics of the coals in Indiana County, Pa., is the second in a series of Bureau publications appraising the Nation's coking-coal reserves by counties and the practicability of upgrading marginal deposits to metallurgical standards. The first publication dealt with the preparation characteristics of the principal coal beds in Cambria County, Pa. Over 95 percent of the coal remaining in Indiana County is in the Upper Freeport, Lower Freeport, and Lower Kittanning beds. Isolated patches of Pittsburgh-bed coal are present, and the Upper Kittanning bed is found in minable thickness at some locations, but production from these sources is not large. The greatest production is from the Freeport beds, which account for nearly 70 percent of the Indiana County coal output. These beds usually contain two or more shale or hone partings and in many places are high in sulfur. The large proportion of bony coal in the Freeport beds 'produces a relatively high-ash product. Mining practices vary from place to place, but it is frequently necessary to leave certain bony portions of the bed in place in order to load a satisfactory product. Table 1 shows the county's coal production, by beds, during 1948.

This paper dealing with the mining methods used in producing iron ore from an underground operation located in the central-western part of the Mesabi Range in Minnesota is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. The mine here discussed was laid out in accordance with a plan adapted to a rather unusual type of ore body, the nature of which is such that the mining method necessarily differs in certain respects from the method used at most of the mines in this district. A description of it may therefore be of interest.

"INTRODUCTION In compliance with those provisions of the organic act establishing the Bureau. of Mines which relate to improvement of health conditions of persons engaged in the mining, preparation, or treatment of mineral substances, sanitary surveys have been made of towns and villages housing the coal miners, metal miners, and mill and smelter employees of Utah.The purpose of the surveys is to afford studies of conditions prevailing in the various mining and smelter towns so far as concerns housing, water supplies, sewage disposal, refuse disposal the handling of foodstuffs, general sanitation, wash and. change houses, and the control of preventable diseases, all of which directly or indirectly have a bearing on the health and efficiency of employees and their families. Certain other factors have been added to the general sanitary surveys such as school and recreational facilities, which have a decided influence on contentment and efficiency. Through comparisons of favorable and unfavorable conditions and practices, and the dissemination of such information, improvements can be effected which will benefit both the employees and the employers.ACKNOWLEGMENTSAcknowledgment is made of the many courtesies shown by the officials of companies and towns visited. Eight blasts were fired in a 2-1/2-ft bench in the Stewartville member of the Galena Limestone formation in an aggregate quarry near Stewartville, Minn. The shots were dimensionally proportional to production-size bench blasts and were about 5 to 10 percent of full scale. The effects of site, timing of initiation, and burden-to-spacing ratio were studied in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial experiment, using three boreholes, caw;, containing a 1/2-in charge diameter of high-density ammonia dynamite, in each blast. Detonation velocity measurements indicated that the dynamite detonated satisfactorily in the 1/2-in charge diameter. The effects of the three experimental variables were analyzed by weight for the percentage of oversized material produced and for size distributions determined by screening the entire muckpiles. The bench faces were painted before each shot in an effort to determine the origin of the oversized material. The square pattern (burden and spacing = 15 in) produced finer overall fragmentation and less oversized material than the rectangular pattern (burden = 15 in; spacing = 22-1/2 in). Sites 1 and 2 were about ft apart. Although site 2 produced slightly better overall fragmentation than site 1, the amounts of oversized material produced showed no significant difference. The timing of initiation (instantaneous or delayed) did not significantly influence the overall fragmentation or the amount of oversized material produced.

Techniques are being developed for measuring the mass concentration of respirable diesel exhaust particles found in underground coal mines. Studies have been conducted over the past five years to investigate size selective 18Dlpling techniques to measure the respirable mass concentrations of diesel exhaust and mine dust aerosol particles in underground coal mines. Results from these studies have been used to develop design and performance criteria for a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler.Three personal diesel exhaust aerosol samplers have subsequently been designed and evaluated in both laboratory and field settings. These samplers use size selective classifiers for the determination of respirable mass concentrations of mineral dust and diesel exhaust particles. Their designs are based on the premise that diesel exhaust particles are predominantly less than 0.8 µm while mineral dust is greater than 0.8 µm.One design, selected for field evaluation, consists of a 10 mm nylon respirable dust cyclone followed by a 0.8 µm cutpoint impactor and afterfilter. The cyclone removes the nonrespirable particles while the inertial impactor state, collects the mineral dust on an impaction plate and allows the diesel particles to penetrate to an afterfilter. The two sample fractions of the respirable particles ( <0.8 µ.m and >0.8 µm) are gravimetrically analyzed to determine the concentrations of the diesel and mineral dust portions in the respirable coal mine aerosol."

Develop quieted, hand-held pneumatic percussion drills that can replace standard hand-held drills in many underground mining applications. The Problem Percussion drills are the noisiest machines used in underground mines; noise levels of 115 to 120 dBA are common, requiring the use of hearing protectors and limiting the time a miner is permit-ted to operate the drill during an 8-hour shift. Hand-held pneumatic percussion drills pose a particularly difficult problem because the operator cannot be isolated from the noise source (e.g., an acoustical cab), and alternative technologies for drilling roof bolt holes and blastholes in tight quarters are not readily available.

Sodium aluminate is the principal aluminum compound formed in the sinters prepared by the lime - soda sinter process for recovering aluminum from silicate source materials . The properties and characteristics of this compound were studied to improve the efficiency of the process . Crystalline sodium aluminate was prepared by sintering stoichiometric quantities of soda ash and calcined alumina for 1 hour at 1,250 ° C. The extent of aluminum extraction from sodium aluminate was determined in water and in solutions of NaOH and Na₂ CO3 . Nearly complete extraction of aluminum from sodium aluminate was achieved only in solutions containing free NaOH in excess of that supplied by the salt through hydrolysis . About 42.2 to 68.8 percent of the aluminum was extracted in water or in solutions of Na₂ CO . The precipitation of alumina trihydrate from sodium aluminate solutions was shown to be part of a continuous , reversible reaction according to the equation Al (OH ) A1 (OH )3 + OHThe reverse reaction dissolves alumina trihydrate in NaOH solutions to produce sodium aluminate . Approximate equilibrium concentrations were determined for the reaction at 30° , 50 ° , and 70 ° C. False apparent equilibrium conditions for the dissolution reaction appear when only a small excess of alumina trihydrate is present in the NaOH solutions . A large excess of alumina trihydrate must be present before the true equilibrium point is assured . The engineering significance of the data is summarized , showing controls that should be exercised for a successful and efficient process .

Tungsten metal in fused form and of high purity was prepared by reducing tungstic oxide with redistilled calcium metal in a heavy-walled sealed reactor. Alloys of tungsten with vanadium, molybdenum) chromium, columbium, and tantalum were prepared by coreduction of mixed metal oxides in the same manner. This work was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to investigate new approaches for preparing tungsten and its alloys in high-purity form. The standard method of producing tungsten metal has been the reduction of tungstic oxides by hydrogen. The resulting metal powder is compacted, sintered, and fabricated by powder metallurgy methods. Long experience in this field has resulted in the development of a technology that (by careful control of the variables such as metal composition, particle size, and sinterng technique) is well adapted to producing wire and the small shapes usually prepared from tungsten metal.

Provide mine personnel with a convenient means of determining the optimum installation geometry of roof trusses in bedded roof. Background Mine operators frequently ask the following questions concerning roof truss installations: 1. Where should the bearing plates or brackets be placed or where should the inclined holes be started? 2. At what angle should the holes for the inclined chords or angle holts be drilled? 3. What tension should be put into the inclined chords so as to achieve the most effective results for the effort and expense? Truss hardware manufacturers have responded to these questions with answers based on what seems to work best. While designs based on past experience are frequently reliable, there was a need for a rational approach that could accommodate a variety of conditions. The Bureau has developed a procedure that enables mine operators to optimize roof truss installations in bedded roof.

The feasibility of breaking hard rock by thermal weakening and subsequent mechanical impacting was tested, Field tests at a basalt quarry in Dresser, Wis., demonstrated that large hard-rock blocks (5 by 5 by 5 ft) could be effectively reduced in size by this method. A series of secondary breakage tests, using air-propane heating, resulted in an average heating cost of $0.36 per ton. This combination energy approach provides an alternate means of size reduction of large hard-rock boulders for quarry and for underground are chute and grizzly operations where mechanical methods, used alone, are ineffective.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effect of refractory oxide additions, introduced in soluble form, on the high-temperature properties of 90- and 98-pct-MgO brick. Brick samples were soaked in solutions containing Al, Ca, Cr, Co, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Si, Sr, Sn, Ti, or Zr ions. Additions to 98-pct-MgO brick did not generally result in statistically significant property improvements. Statistically significant improvements were noted in hot modulus of rupture (MOR), slag resistance, and spalling resistance of the 90-pct-MgO brick for additions of Al, Mg, or Sn. High-temperature performance of treated 90-pct-MgO refractories was equal to or approached that of 98-pct-MgO brick. The marked improvements due to tin were obtained with additions of only 1.14 wt pct Sn02.

Hydrochloric acid , sulfuric acid , and chloridizing roast- water leaching methods for dissolution of cesium and rubidium from Maine , Canada , and Southern Rhodesia pollucite ores and their flotation products were investigated by small- scale tests . Optimum conditions were determined to be ( 1 ) for hydrochloric acid leaching , use 12.7 equivalents of 8.8 normal acid per equivalent of cesium in the sample and leach for 6 hours at 100 ° C ; ( 2 ) for sulfuric acid leaching , use 12.7 equivalents of 14.4 normal acid and leach for 2 hours at 120° C ; and (3 ) for chloridizing roast - water leaching , roast minus 200 - mesh ore, limestone , and calcium chloride in a ratio of 2 : 4 : 1 , respectively , for 1 hour at 900 ° C , and leach the calcine for 1 hour at 80 ° C with enough water to give 35 pct solids . Extractions of cesium from ores and flotation products containing over 20 pct cesium were in excess of 97 , 93 , and 96 pct for the hydrochloric acid , sulfuric acid , and chloridizing roast - water leach processes , respectively .

The amenability of titaniferous slags and domestic mineral concentrates to chlorination was determined in a 6 - inch diameter fluidized bed chlorinator . Ilmenites from Valley County , Idaho ; Aiken , S.C ,; Trail Ridge , Fla .; and MacIntyre , N.Y .; and a titaniferous magnetite from Iron Mountain , Wyo . , were used in preparing the slags . The domestic minerals tested were an ilmenite concentrate from Valley County , Idaho , and a rutile concentrate from Magnet Cove , Ark . A high - grade Australian rutile was used as a standard for comparison . The impurity content of the slags and minerals tested , which was the most critical factor affecting their performance , was dependent on the geographical source of the material . All of the materials tested were amenable to chlorination in a fluidized bed although some required special operating conditions . Titanium extractions and chlorine utilization were over 90 percent for most of the slags and the Australian rutile . The Valley County , Idaho , ilmenite performed well in the reactor despite its 34 percent iron content .

This paper will be of interest to those who are actually developing a mineral prospect or planning to do so, as well as to investors who are considering the problem of financing the development of the prospect, so that they may know what the risks are and what capital expenditures are necessary before a prospect may become a mine. The term "prospect" used broadly, as it is in this paper, is defined as any property that has a mineral showing of sufficient interest to warrant development, irrespective of prior work, Such previous exploration, however, may be extensive and consist of several tunnels or adits connected by raises, or of shafts with several levels. There may also be a small mining and milling plant on the prospect which, because of the lack of capital for development or the lack of markets for the products, is now idle. Such prospects may warrant further capital investment for development work or for a mine plant to raise to the stage of profitable production.

Southeast Alaska&apos;s mining industry has come to life after nearly 50 years of relative dormancy. Commencement of operations of the Greens Creek Mine in 1989 marked a turning point in the industry as the first large scale mining operation in the region since closure of the Alaska-Juneau Mine in 1944. The Greens Creek Mine is now the nation&apos;s largest silver producer. Other large scale mining projects are now on the drawing board, including development of the Kensington Mine and reopening the Alaska-Juneau Mine, which could become North America&apos;s largest underground gold mine. The region&apos;s mining industry includes more than these large scale projects, however. For example, a significant level of mineral exploration occurs each summer in Southeast Alaska. In addition, mining operations in British Columbia and Yukon Territory are generating jobs and income in Southeast Alaska.

U.S. supply and demand data for utility electricity by States and regions were tabulated for the years 1960 and 1965. Estimates are provided of State-by-State quantitative data for the utility electricity industry that can be integrated into State and regional energy balances by source, form, and major consuming sectors, and used to determine basic flow-patterns. The difficult problem of compiling interstate and interregional shipments of electricity was resolved by (a) assuming the negligibility of interregional shipments and (b) deriving a theoretical line loss percentage used for determining interstate shipments. The data developed were able to show an estimated total supply of utility electricity available for consumption. The tables also report the distribution of the supply among the major consuming sectors (household and commercial, industrial, and transportation). To compare the various energy sources of utility electricity, quantities were converted to their British thermal unit (Btu) equivalents. The Federal Power Commission, Edison Electric Institute, and Bureau of Mines are the sources of the data used in this study.

in underground mines to measure worker exposure to various gases such as methane, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Even in relatively small concentrations, NO2 can produce harmful side effects in underground workers. Mines using equipment powered by diesel engines, carrying out explosive blasting operations, and performing extensive arc welding and/or cutting work will have measurable quantities of NO2 released by these processes. Workers in these areas often use gas monitors to warn of excessive gas concentrations and to help them determine when to increase ventilation air that will dilute these gases, thus minimizing exposures to this gas. Portable gas monitors, used to measure NO2 levels, must be calibrated before each use. Calibration is typically performed using a small portable pressurized cylinder containing a certified gas mixture. The certified NO2 standard mixture, usually 10 ppm NO2 concentration, is diluted with either air or nitrogen gas. To determine the stability of commercially available portable gas standards, two different cylinders containing NO2 in nominal 10-ppm concentrations were examined. One cylinder was diluted in air, the other, in nitrogen. Baseline NO2 mixtures were generated using a standard liquid NO2 permeation tube operated at a constant temperature. Final dilutions of the test gas mixtures were made with air or with nitrogen using a mass flow-controlled gas dilution system. This study showed that, when a permeation-type NO2 generator is used, the electrochemical sensors in portable NO2 monitors provide identical results for gas mixtures whether they are diluted with air or with nitrogen. Two different gas monitors, one with a two-electrode sensor and one with a three-electrode sensor, were used to measure gas concentrations in the two commercially available cylinders. One month after the cylinders were delivered, the NO2-in-nitrogen cylinder, stated to contain 10 ppm NO2, measured 8.13 ppm. The NO2-in-air cylinder, also stated to hold 10 ppm NO2, measured 6.88 ppm. Therefore, before using NO2 gas cylinders to calibrate monitors, it is recommended that their concentrations be verified either by manufacturer recertification or by comparing the stated cylinder gas concentrations to a laboratory-based permeation tube-generated standard.

This paper has been written to aid the owner of a small gold mine or prospect in preparing a report on his property for the purpose of interesting capital. If an owner can afford to do so, he should employ a mining engineer of recognized standing and experience to examine and report on his property, but many owners of small -mines and particularly of prospects cannot make the expenditure required for this. Further, many of them do not know how to prepare a description which will cover those features of a deposit on which a potential investor promises his opinion as to its worth. If such an owner is convinced that he possesses an orebody of sufficient grade and size to warrant the required expenditure for a thorough investigation and wishes to present his property to prospective investors, then the following suggestions concerning the proper way to sample his deposit, estimate the tonnage of developed and probable ore, and prepare a report may be of assistance.
