The Bahamas Oil Refining Co. (BORCO) refinery in Freeport continued to operate at less than half its full 500,000-barrel-per-day capacity. Although owned through subsidiaries by the Carey Energy Corp (65%) and Standard Oil Co. of California (35%), BORCO is ineligible for participation in the Crude Oil Entitlements Program granted to companies operating within the United States proper or its territories. Like some other Caribbean refineries, BORCO has suffered a loss of normal market outlet due to the wt advantage afforded U.S. refineries by the Entitlements Program. Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and Libya are the major suppliers of crude for the refinery. Its principal products, motor spirits, aviation fuel, distillate fuels, and residual fuel oils, were marketed in the United States and Puerto Rim. The Government-owned Bahamas Development Corp. and Burmah Oil Co. Ltd., held discussions pertaining to a renegotiation of Burmah Oil's management contract for the Grand Bahama Oil Transshipment terminal. The desired contract modifications were not made public but financial problems have plagued the terminal and its operation since construction started in 1972.

A summary of the characteristics of motor gasoline for the summer 1951 is presented in table 1, and for comparison, a similar summary for the summer 1950 is shown in table 2. Trends of some of the more important characteristics over a period of years are shown in figures 1 and 2. As indicated, octane numbers of motor gasolines sold in the United states decreased approximately one-half to one octane unit from the record levels attained during the winter of 1950-51 and are a little below the octane numbers of summer 1950. However, average vapor pressures of the summer gasolines did not change, and certain distillation temperatures varied only slightly from those of the year before.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report summarizes a field demonstration of pneumatic backfilling technologies conducted at the abandoned Hillside Coal and Iron Slope in Vandling, P A. Researchers demonstrated two pneumatic backfilling technologies recently developed under the USBM's Abandoned Mine Reclamation Research Program, the Pneumatic Pipefeeder and the High-Efficiency Ejector. Both systems had previously been evaluated at the USBM's subsidence abatement investigation laboratory near Fairchance, P A. The objective of the demonstration was to fill 100% of the abandoned tunnel with backfill stone to prevent further subsidence. The Pneumatic Pipefeeder was used for 21 days, at a rate of 63 to 124 t/ d (69 to 136 st/d), to fill 88% of the tunnel. The High-Efficiency Ejector was used for 2 days, at a rate of 125 to 132 t/d (138 to 146 st/d) to fill the remaining 12% of the tunnel. The backfill placed by both systems was tightly compacted. The major problem encountered was wear on the polyethylene pipeline from the abrasion of the high-velocity backfill. The use of heavier steel pipe minimized the problem. A cost analysis for the entire project is given.

Research was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a well-point dewatering system in conjunction with a french drain to intercept waste impoundment leakage while reducing the volume of waste water requiring treatment. A well-point dewatering system composed of 585 production wells was installed around the perimeter of a leaking impoundment that previously used only a french-drain system for leakage control. The placement of the well-point system was designed to intercept and remove the leakage from the groundwater before the contaminant reached the french drain. Groundwater monitoring at this site revealed that after a period of approximately 40 days the well-point dewatering system had stabilized and effectively prevented the further spread of contamination to the french drain.

Although during the past 10 years Alabama has attained an enviable position by its coal-mine accident experience and, like most of the other coal-mining States, has made progress in the safer operation of coal mines, there is still room for improvement, which can be realized only by still greater efforts on the part of employees and employers. From 1993, when accidents were first recorded by the Alabama State Mine Inspection Department, to 1934, inclusive, 3,451 men lost their lives in the production of 569,722,676 tons of coal. The primary purpose of this report is to bring to the attention of the mining industry in Alabama end elsewhere statistics of fatal accidents for 1931-34, with the hope that a study of the causes may lead to reduction of similar accidents in the future.

"Rhodesian asbestos is of high quality and is much in demand by American consumers. Production in Rhodesia was first reported in 1909. The production for this and each succeeding year is shown in the following table:The serious curtailment in production for the years 1912 and 1913 was occasioned by transportation difficulties. In 1914 a railway was projected to Victoria and thereafter production increased greatly. Up to 1916 asbestos was obtained,from the Victoria district only, but thereafter the Bulwayo district became an important,producer with minor quantities from Gwelo.In the Bulawayo district the productive area is about 2 1/2 miles long, with Shebanie mine at the north-west end, the Nil Desperandum at the south end, and the Birthday claims between them."

Scrap iron and steel attracted attention during 1937 because of the unprecedented exports and the concomitant agitation in some quarters to prohibit the exportation of this essential raw material except on license by the President. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the synthesis of advanced ceramics (SiC+AlN, SiAlON, SiC+A1203, and Si3N4+AlN) from natural clays (kaolin, halloysite, or montmorillonite) by an intercalation and heat treatment method. This process includes the steps of refining a clay, intercalating organic chemicals into its layered structure, drying the intercalated mixture, firing the treated structure at certain temperature ranges in controlled atmospheres to form desired compounds, and grinding the loosely agglomerated structure. Focus of this research is to economically process advanced ceramic structures from abundant natural resources. The advanced ceramic phases produced in this simple treatment are homogeneously distributed at the nanostructure level, and may potentially lead to cost effective manufacturing processes. The intercalation of clay was confirmed by X-ray and BET analyses. The evolution of chemical compositions during carbonization reactions and carbothermal reduction was investigated. The characteristics of refined clays and synthesized powders were studied. Advanced ceramic composites/solid solution have been produced from intercalated clays, without the presence of other compounds.

As part of the important program of promoting conservation and efficient utilization of petroleum, Bureau of Mines engineers are making studies of secondary oil-recovery projects throughout the United states and publishing reports setting forth the pertinent facts so that others may profit by the experience gained. This report presents the results of a study by engineers of the Bureau of Mines, stationed at Franklin, Pa., of secondary oil recovery in a part of the Cabin Creek field, Kanawha and Boone Counties, W. Va., where natural gas is injected into the reservoir to stimulate oil production. Most oil produced in the Appalachian region at present is obtained from stripper fields in which almost all natural energy has been dissipated. Secondary-recovery methods are used extensively in many oil-producing areas of New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky for recovering oil not produced by primary-production methods. The part of the Cabin Creek field reported in this study is shown in figure 1 and has been designated by the operator as project 4. In 1944 the developed area of the entire field was approximately 4,200 acres, and the area of project 4 was about 600 acres. In the developed area of the project the oil reservoir is in the Berea sandstone and occurs at 2,914 to 3,410 feet.

The author, who himself has worked inn the field with various types of torsion balances, expresses in the article his experience with the recently marketed Haff-Torsion-Balance. The advantages of practical work with Haff?s s torsion balance as compared with other types are mentioned. In spite of low weight and corresponding small dimensions (Model M = 23.5 kg., Model Al = 11.5 kg.) the sensitiveness is not less than that in the largest instruments. It is at 1.10-9, which is proved by calculations. A comparison with the corresponding values of other types of torsion balances (Eötvös, Askania, Gepege) is given. Thermodynamic calculations indicate that an electrochemical cell might serve as an analytical device for determining the composition of high-purity metals. An equation, readily derived, for the cell voltage, E, is as follows: [E I RT In F NFe unknown sample T of L NFe standard] The cell, however, must come to equilibrium, must be reversible, and must have no thermal effects or complicating side reactions whose magnitude is indeterminable. This Bureau of Mines investigation explores the feasibility of an electrochemical technique for the analysis of high-purity iron. Experiments were conducted using room-temperature aqueous cells and high-temperature molten salt cells. The room-temperature cells proved to be irreversible. The high-temperature cells utilizing FeCl2 and a eutectic mixture of KC1-LiCl were reversible, but did not attain a constant voltage necessary for analytical considerations.

"INTRODUCTION The Elk Mountain mica deposit was examined in June 1943 by the Bureau of Mines. An exploratory project and an access road for the property were recommended, provided the zinc was put in operation under competent management. K. Garard obtained a lease on the properly and started operations in June 1944; this was followed immediately by the Bureau's exploratory work. Road construction was begun by the Forest Service in July the same year.The lessee mined mica from the richest exposure with a crew of three men for 2-1/2 months. His operation terminated late in September, but the Bureau of Mines project and the Forest Service road construction continued until snow forced suspension of activity during the first week of November.The Bureau of Mines work consisted of trenching with a bulldozer, hand excavating on undeveloped outcrops, extending an existing adit, and starting a new adit below the older workings."

Studies on more efficient utilization of petroleum have been made for 50 years by the Bureau of Mines. As part of this work, the Bureau has analyzed thousands of samples of crude oil by its standardized routine method, and many of these analyses have been published, sometimes in special compilations, other times in connection with reports of research on petroleum. This report is a finding index for all analyses published from 1921 to 1959, and brings up to date the information in Information Circular 7470 3 and in the appendix of Bulletin 490.4 The routine method of analysis and the equipment originally were described in a report by Dean and associates. 5 This report has long been out of print, but Bulletin 490, bringing the procedure and its modifications to date, was published in 1951. 6 Briefly, the procedure consists of testing, by standard methods, small samples of a crude oil for gravity, sulfur, color, viscosity, pour point, and (more recently) nitrogen; and, by a standardized procedure, distilling a portion of the crude oil and determining certain properties on the separated fractions and residuum. Careful records are made during the procedure, and the distillation data obtained are used to compute the approximate amounts of products present in the sample--such as percentages of gasoline, kerosine, gas oil, and lubricants. The principal data and results are recorded on a standard analytical report form. An analysis of a sample of crude oil from a recently developed field is shown in table 1. Compilations of these analyses, sometimes in tabular form and usually for specific geographic areas, are published from time to time. Analyses often are included in connection with other studies, such as engineering field reports.

"The tests described in this paper were conducted under the sponsorship of Subcommittee VII on Pulverizing Characteristics of Coal, a subcommittee of Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke, American Society for Testing Materials, with a view to evaluating various laboratory procedures for testing grindability of coal in connection with commercial pulverization of coal for use as powdered fuel. The subcommittee, at a meeting in New York City on February 21, 1934, selected for test four methods that had been developed during the past few years for testing grindabilitay of coal and were being used by coal-testing laboratories in the United States and Canada. These methods are:Bureau of Mines method, Cross method, Fuel Research Laboratory method, and Hardgrove method. Subcommittee VII agreed that the grindability tests should be made on five coals selected to cover a wide range of hardness. The Pittsburgh Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, was asked to direct the investigation and to prepare representative samples of the coals. Laboratories of the fol. lowing institutions and companies agreed to cooperate by making grindability tests: Babcock & Wilcox Co., Foster Wheeler Corporation, Fuel Engineering Co., of New York, Fuel Research Laboratory of the Canada Department of Mines, and Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSHelpful suggestions in planning the investigation were made by A. "The introduction into mines, quarries and manufacturing plants of machines and tools operated by compressed air has revolutionized methods of operation to an extent comparable only with that occasioned by the invention of explosives and the utilization of electricity. The use of compressed air in pneumatic tools, in rock drills, and for the operation of pumps and other machinery is well known to most miners and quarrymen, but its application as a substitute for explosives for breaking rock in a few granite quarries has received little publicity.In the region of Lithonia, a few miles from Atlanta, Georgia, is a dome of massive granite used widely for building stone and for paving blocks. The most remarkable structural feature of the granite is the absence of joints and sheeting planes. The term ""joints"" is applied to open fractures that commonly occur in rocks, usually vertical in direction or nearly so, and spaced from a few inches to several feet apart. On the Lithonia granite outcrop, however, one may walk over the bare rock surface for hundreds of feet without finding any indications of a joint, ""Sheeting planes"" are open fractures at various levels, approximately parallel with the rock surface. The presence of such planes when spaced several feet apart greatly facilitates quarrying, and where absent, as at Lithonia, the necessary fractures must be made artificially.The forcing of artificial sheeting planes is accomplished as follows: Two holes of about 3-inch diameter arc drilled close together and to a depth of about 8 feet. Two men work at these holes all summer, and sometimes part of a second summer. A very small charge of black blasting powder, not more than a spoonful, is placed in each hole, tamped with clay, and the charges are fired simultaneously with an electric battery. This starts a small fracture running outward from the bottoms of the holes. There is in most granites one direction of easy splitting known among quarrymen as the ""rift"", and as the rift direction in the Lithonia granite is horizontal the fracture follows a horizontal plane,"

To concentrate coarse mica particles using a dry beneficiation technique. Approach Concentrate coarse, II berated mica particles using a Bureau-designed system of crushers, screens, and a two-stage zigzag air classifier. How It Works Because mica has a flat plate-like crystalline structure, mica particles are significantly lighter than blocky gangue particles of the same size fraction. Thus an air classification technique can separate the flat, light mica particles from the heavier gangue particles. The ore, which Is first run through a standard jaw crusher, a roll crusher, and a hammer mill to liberate the mica, enters the rougher Zig-zag section through a rotating air lock. See photograph and diagram of a 2-stage air classifier. Airflow through the classifier can be varied according to the size of the particles being separated. The gangue material falls through the airstream of the rougher zigzag section and is discarded as tailings. The mica flakes are carried by the air-stream to the cyclone shown on the right side of the diagram, where they are collected. This rougher mica concentrate is fed to the cleaner zigzag section through another rotating air lock. The mica particles are again carried by the airstream but they are now collected In the cyclone on the left side. The cleaner concentrate leaves the left-side cyclone through a third rotating air lock and is rescreened to remove under-size material missed by the first screening. The final product of this pneumatic process is generally a high-grade mica concentrate. A generalized flow diagram for the pneumatic concentration method Is shown In the second diagram.

Exothermic oxidation reactions of sulfide minerals can produce self-heating situations in underground mines. If the self-heating is unchecked and the resulting heat is not sufficiently dissipated, the result can be spontaneous combustion fires. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes laboratory tests conducted to measure the reactivity of pyrite following treatment with additives to counter its self-heating tendencies. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and isothermal oxidation procedures were used to obtain information on pyrite ignition and the behavior of pyrite during low-temperature oxidation to ferrous sulfate. The determination of treatment effectiveness was evaluated by adding 5 wt pct of the compound to the pyrite before milling. The resulting samples were then heated in moistened air and after 24 h, the amount of pyrite oxidation determined. Results of these tests indicated that several phosphate compounds reduced the oxidation of pyrite to sulfate to about 50 pct or less compared with the oxidation of untreated sample at 200° C. Cupric sulfate reduced oxidation to about 20 pet untreated sample at 200° C. Sodium, calcium, and potassium chloride reduced pyrite oxidation to levels of approximately 15 pct or less of the untreated sample. Using only 1 pct of sodium or calcium chloride was effective in slowing pyrite oxidation to less than 20 pct of the untreated sample.

The Bureau of Mines studied factors affecting ignition of coal mine refuse and on methods for control of burning. Laboratory experiments showed that air permeates more readily through segregated than through nonsegregated refuse and that air permeability is greater through coarse than through fine particle refuse. Minus 3-1/4-inch refuse ignites spontaneously more readily than minus 1/4-inch refuse. The burning of a 1,000-pound conical coal pile was con-trolled by capping with an 18-inch-thick layer of minus 1/4-inch refuse containing 37 percent combustible. In field trials, the burning of refuse at operating mines was controlled by capping with a layer of fine refuse. Water, applied as a spray or by injection, quenched surface flames and cooled the burning waste. Inspection of refuse piles at operating mines showed that the spontaneous ignition tendency is affected by the exposed surface relative to the total volume and the segregation of particles during dumping.

A job analysis is a written list of the tasks associated with doing a particular job. In drilling, describing the steps associated with adding rod to the drill steel would be an example of a task associated with the job. How to hammer casing or fish a lost drill bit out of a hole would also be job tasks. Develop a written list of job tasks. Ask drillers in your company if the tasks listed are correct and accurately reflect how to perform the job. While each driller may do the job a little differently, some tried?and?true methods are required to perform certain tasks safely and correctly. You may find a separate analysis is needed for different drilling jobs (e.g., a residential well or a monitoring well). Also remember to include the tasks of both the helper and the driller.

The Bureau of Mines has reviewed those portions of the "Tariff Schedules of the United States Annotated 1963" that are of interest to the minerals industry. This study shows to what extent rates of duty were altered (increased of decreased), and provides a bridge where possible from the old Schedule A classification system to the new TSUS system of statistical reporting of import data. In general the new tariff has corrected previous classification defects and inconsistencies, but the rates of duties have not been materially changed.
