Experimental determinations were made of the heats of formation at 298.15 ° K of cuprous ferrite and cupric ferrite ; the heat capacity of cuprous ferrite was measured over the temperature range from 50 ° to 298 ° K and the entropy at 298.15 ° K was evaluated ; the heat contents of cuprous ferrite and cupric ferrite above 298.15 ° K were measured to 1,500 ° K and 1,100 ° K , respectively . These thermodynamic values were combined with other pertinent data to obtain heat and free energy of formation values at high temperatures . The stability of the two ferrites with respect to their constituent oxides is discussed . Thermodynamic values are included for the decomposition of cupric ferrite to form cuprous ferrite , magnetite , and oxygen .

The Bureau of Mines studied air contamination caused by diesel exhaust in a 10,000-ft ventilated tunnel. Sequential air samples were taken at the ends and middle of the tunnel during an operating cycle. Observed and calculated results for carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides were essentially in agreement. Nitrogen dioxide was present only in trace amounts. It was found that contamination was related to the volume of ventilating air, the number of haulage trips, train speed, and engine load.

"Introduction.Oil-field operations have often been carried on under great stress and haste, in which the prime purpose has been to put the wells down rapidly as possible, without regard to a few of the various factors affecting cost. In such fields as Burkurnett, Texas, where the well locations are town lots and other small tracts, the operator was concerned primarily with in drilling. In such cases a few thousand dollars more or less in the cost of a well not considered. We are reaching a time, however, when our reserves a,more definitely outlined and properties are being along more economic lines. Operators are becoming more concerned with the actual cost of this work, and are gradually learning that fuel consumption can be reduced in drilling and producing without delaying the speed of drilling, and in the case of production, it will greatly reduce the unit cost per barrel of production.Types of Field Boilers.In the oil fields there are in general two types of boilers; those which are used for drilling wells and are of a more or less portable character, and those established later in a more permanent form and serve for the purpose,of generating steam for producing the oil. As a rule, the latter type of boilers are larger than those of the drilling type. Usually, little care is given to the installation of drilling boilers; particularly in attempting to set them up in such a way as to avoid waste in of fuel. Because of the temporary nature of these installations there may be some justification for not giving them more,attention in this resend, but it is believed that a few precautions could be taken that would amply repay the cost and trouble taken. In connection with the boiler plants that are afterwards established, when a few producing wells have been,brought in with a life of two to ten years and probably longer, much care to the boiler-plant construction and to the installation of recording instruments which will assist in operating the plant at minimum cost."

Provide an improved, rugged, reliable, cost-effective automatic fire protection for mine haulage trucks. Approach Systems that automatically sense and extinguish fires on haulage trucks were designed, built, and in-mine tested. How It Works Temperature sensors mounted above the engine of the truck detect the heat from a fire while it is still small and controllable. A cab-mounted control panel warns the operator of the fire emergency and then automatically triggers the discharge of 60 pounds of multipurpose dry chemical extinguishing agent (from storage tanks through hoses and nozzles) into the engine compartment. If desired, the control panel can be field-adjusted by changing one resistor to delay the discharge for up to 60 seconds to allow time for the operator to stop the truck and shut down the engine. The system can be assembled with either pressurized storage tanks, or a combination of non-pressurized storage tanks plus separate pressure cartridges. This pressure source option is one of the improvements of this system over the earlier systems described in Technology News No. 11. Other improvements are a simplified control circuit and an improved sensor.

The uses of talc are many but are not, in general well known or fully developed within the last decade several companies have realized the possibilities of greatly increased use and have intelligently proceeded to develop some of the fields which seemed most promising. This has had a tendency to lift talc from the obscurity in which it had existed for years, but the work is only started and much remains to be done. Considerably more attention has been paid to the technology and utilization of talc in Germany and Austria than in this country, despite the fact that the United States produces 65 of the world's talc and Germany and Austria combined but 5.4%. In the "Bericht,uber die tatigkeit des verbends der talcum-interessenten in Oesterreich-Ungarn" (Proceedings of the Austro-Hungarian Talc Association), for the years 1912 and 1913, many notes upon new uses appeared, together with suggestions as to further development of old uses. Aside from a few notes on the use of tar in paper, little has been published in the English language upon this subject. By recent action of the Talc and Soapstone Producers Association (U.S.A.) funds for research into the properties and uses of talc have been made Available and it is hoped that markets will be materially broadened a a result of this work.

ANALYTICAL PRESSURE - VOLUME COMPUTATIONS FOR THE MINE PROTOTYPE A new coal mine is projected, with entrance by slope 1,500 feet long. Nine main entries will be standard for development, five as intake and four as return. One return shaft is planned near the slope bottom, and an intake shaft and portal are planned 5,000 feet north of the slope bottom. The slope will have an area of 150 square feet and a perimeter of 55 feet. A belt and supply track will be within the slope. The return shaft will be circular with a diameter of 18 feet and will be 500 feet deep with an escapeway. Two hundred feet of the shaft and 500 feet of the slope will be concrete lined. Select the fan to operate five units per shift and drive the 5,000 feet to a proposed new portal, using the slope for an intake. Two main splits are planned with the maximum of three units on any split. The amount of air desired at each unit is 25,000 c.f.m; a shop at the slope bottom will require 10,000 c.f.m. In the solution of this or any similar problem, the first step is to determine the resistance factors. CALCULATION OF R FACTORS Slope area = 150 sq. ft.; Perimeter = 55 feet; Length = 1,500 feet. The friction factor K must be established. Five hundred feet of the slope is smooth lined, moderately obstructed by belt; K = 35. The remaining 1000 feet is in sedimentary rock and moderately obstructed; K = 85.

The Bureau of Mines initiated a field test of underground coal gasitication to investigate the technologic feasibility of gasifying a subbituminous coal. The test site is near the town of Hanna, Wyo., about 70 miles northwest of Laramie. Preliminary results of the experiment are described. The coal was ignited in the central well of a 16-well pattern. Both forward and reverse combustion techniques were attempted to prepare a path of sufficient permeability to permit the high air injection rat s necessary for gasification. Gasification between linked wellbores was sustained for periods as long as 3 months. Hydrogen-rich gas having a heating value of 100 to 150 Btu/scf was produced.

In this Bureau of Mines investigation, the low-temperature heat capacities of polycrystalline phases corresponding to the sulfide compounds CoSO?89' CoS1?33, and CoS2 were measured by adiabatic calorimetry within the nominal temperature range 5 to 300 K. The derived absolute entropies S298 were 10.36±O.02, 12.96±O.03, and 16.31±O.03 cal?mol-1?K-l, respectively, assuming third-law behavior. In addition, the standard enthalpy of formation 8Hf298 of CoSO?89 was determined by bromine solution calorimetry. The derived value of 8Hf298 was -50.63±2.1 kcal?mol-1, based on the 8Hf298 of Co0. This result is considerably more negative than previously published formation values based on high-temperature gas equilibrium studies.

The severe corrosion of equipment that is caused by the presence of hydrogen sulphide in oil and gas has been described in detail by several authors. Such corrosion, termed "low-temperature hydrogen sulphide corrosion", presents a somewhat different problem from the "high-temperature hydrogen sulphide corrosion" that is encountered in refinery operation and which has been described by various-investigators of refinery corrosion.

This paper describes the methods and equipment used by the Utah Copper Co. in constructing a vehicular tunnel at Bingham Canyon, Utah, Completion and use of this tunnel for vehicular and pedestrian traffic permitted abandonment of the long-used county highway connecting Bingham and Copperfield. Expanding- operations of the Utah Copper open-cut mine, necessitated construction of a vehicular route away from the ore body. The site Of the tunnel is well beyond ultimate nit slopes and future mining operations. The tunnel not only diverts vehicular and pedestrian traffic is but also carrier, creek water, copper water, sewage, pipe lines, and. power and telephone cables between the two communities. The dimensions of the tunnel permit one-way traffic only. Traffic-control lights have been installed. Owing to the possibility of accumulation of carbon monoxide gas from automobile exhausts, automatic gas detectors has been installed at various stations. These detectors control the operation of a large exhaust fan situated at the upper portal of the tunnel.

Federal lands often contain extensive mineral resources and decisions affecting access to those lands are made with knowledge of the possible minerals-related consequences. Information is provided to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in this report for use in preparing environmental impact statements on the Western Mojave Management Area (WMMA) and the Desert Tortoise Priority Habitat (DTPH). To augment U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) efforts such as the Mineral Assessment of the Planned Foil Irwin Expansion, Modified Silurian Valley Alternative, San Bernardino County, California which is in progress, and the Economic Analysis of the Minerals Potential of the East Mojave National Scenic Area; California, the USBM studied mineral deposits and estimated the potential impacts of mining in a segment of the California desert; the 8.7-million-acre WMMA, an area which includes the 1.2-million-acre Desert Tortoise Priority Habitat (DTPH). In addition, this information is intended to assist administrators, legislators, and the concerned public in understanding the economic importance of mineral resources in the California desert, especially that portion designated as the WMMA. See figure 1.

The Bureau of Mines investigated methods for beneficiating platinumgroup metal ores from the Stillwater Complex , Montana , as part of its program to increase the supply of critical and strategic minerals and metals from domestic resources . This report presents results of a 5- day continuous campaign employing a pilot flotation mill to recover sulfide concentrate containing platinum- palladium values from anorthositic ore . A mercaptobenzothiazole - sulfuric acid reagent suite was used . The pilot flotation mill was operated at an average feed rate of 106 lb/ hr of ore . A rougher concentrate containing 8.5 pct of the feed was prepared ; it assayed 1.1 oz /ton Pt and 3.5 oz / ton Pd . Recovery of platinum and palladium were 91 and 87 pct , respectively .

"INTRODUCTION To increase the supply of ore needed to produce steel the Bureau of Mines has explored 187 mineral deposits containing chromium, iron, manganese, cobalt, nickel, fluorspar, tungsten, vanadium, or coal during the fiscal years. 1940-44, the deposits thus explored were selected from several thousand that were first examined to appraise their possibilities. The objective of the exploration was to determine the tonnage and grade of ores upon which mining, operations might be based, and the metallurgical processing that was most suitable for their utilization.Most of these deposits were sub-marginal by pre-war standards; hence there had been no incentive for their exploration, yet many such deposits were known to exist that probably contained ore sufficient in grade and amount to be utilized as war reserves.Some of the Bureau's exploration projects have disclosed substantial or even very large amounts of ore, much of which is fairly high in grade. In a few of them bodies of high-grade ore have been found, though in others the tonnage has proved to be too small or too low-grade for utilization."

The Bureau of Mines investigated nitrous oxide (N20) stability when used as a solvent for organic removal from metal powder surfaces. Both supercritical and subcritical conditions were studied. This investigation was prompted by the occurrence of a violent reaction when supercritical N20 was being used to deoil a metal powder grinding waste sample that contained 20 to 25 wt pct cutting oil. Tests were conducted to determine the cause of the reaction and to define stability limits. Test data showed that the waste's oil fraction reacted violently with N20 acting as an oxidizer; the metal powder acted as a promoter to reduce the ignition temperature. Although the data were scattered, this temperature appeared to reach a minimum at a certain pressure (dependent on vessel and sample size). The minimum ignition temperature for a 0.64-g sample in a 72-cm3 vessel was 360° C at 200 psig. As the sample size increased, the ignition temperature decreased. For example, when the sample size was increased to 10 g, a reaction occurred at 240° C and 600 psig. Because of the variability of ignition temperature with pressure and sample size, safe operating conditions were not established. Overall, this research showed that extreme caution should be exercised when using N20 in an organic or organic-metal system.

In This Chapter [Methane ignition as initiation source for much larger secondary coal dust explosions Rock dusting requirements to prevent coal dust explosions Dangers of hybrid mixtures of methane and coal dust] Although methane explosions are dangerous, those that involve coal dust are even more so. If exploding methane disperses and ignites the coal dust that has accumulated on the mine ribs and floor, the burning coal dust immeasurably increases the strength of the explosion. Such methane-dust explosions are prevented by inerting the coal dust in a way that prevents the exploding methane from igniting it. This chapter discusses the dust hazard and how it is pre-vented in U.S. coal mines. METHANE IGNITION AS INITIATION SOURCE FOR MUCH LARGER SECONDARY COAL DUST EXPLOSIONS The typical scenario for coal mine explosions starts with the ignition of a flammable methane-air atmosphere near the face. The turbulent winds from the primary methane explosion then disperse the coal dust. If there is insufficient rock dust (usually limestone), a secondary coal dust explosion then propagates throughout large sections of the mine. These scenarios have been studied extensively at the Bruceton Experimental Mine (BEM) and the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) of the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. The minimum quantity of methane required to initiate a coal dust explosion was studied in 1930 in the BEM [Rice et al. 1933; Nagy 1981] and then later in the LLEM, whose cross-sectional area (130 ft2) is over twice that of the BEM [Sapko et al. 1987a]. Studies conducted in the BEM closely simulated conditions that existed in operating mines in the early 20th century. The later tests in the 20-ft-wide entries of the LLEM simulated the geometries of modern mines with advanced roof support technology. The data from the BEM tests show that 13 ft3 was the minimum quantity of methane at the face that, when ignited, would disperse and ignite coal dust. In the BEM, this amount of methane was mixed with air to form a total flammable volume of about 140 ft3 of a 9% methane-in-air mix-ture. In the wider entries of the LLEM, about 37 ft3 of methane was required to disperse pure coal dust and start a self-sustained coal dust explosion. This amount of methane was mixed with

In order to assist the various Federal and State agencies using large quantities of coal to select coal best suited technically and economically to their use, the United States Bureau of Mines has placed at their disposal a fuel inspection service. As part of this service, inspections are made at the mines which propose to furnish coal to these agencies on contracts. Such inspections cover both the mine itself to ascertain its capacity to fur- nish the desired tonnage and quality of the coal, the preparation of the coal in the tipple, and the obtaining of samples for analysis to determine the quality of coal as shipped. To insure that the sample sent to the laboratory for analysis is representative of the average quality of the coal, increments are taken at intervals until a gross sample of about 1,000 pounds of coal has been collected from each of the sizes of coal shipped by the mine, while coal has been coming from all parts of the mine. In reducing this gross sample to the small sample which is sent to the laboratory for analysis it is necessary to crush and quarter the coal by a certain standardized method until only 5 or 6 pounds of coal small enough to pass through a 3/16-inch square-mesh screen remains. The ordinary method which the bureau has followed was to crush the coal by hand with a tamper, such as is used for tamping concrete, on some hare smooth surface and to reduce the volume by quartering and riffling. During the past few years the demands from various Federal and State agencies for this service have been increasing rapidly in respect to bituminous coals. In addition to this, which might be called the normal increase, numerous requests have been received for similar service in respect to anthracite. It was obvious that if this increased demand was to be met it would be necessary either to increase the force allotted to this work or to provide the present force with some means by which their work could be made more effective. A care- ful survey of the situation showed that the greatest amount of time was consumed in trans- porting the men and their equipment from mine to mine in the same district, and in reducing the gross sample to the small finely crushed sample which is to be sent to the laboratory. Both of these phases of the work could be greatly accelerated by providing a motor truck of suitable speed and capacity, carrying a power-operated crusher, and the proper auxiliary equipment to store the gross sample as collected and to reduce it in volume efficiently after it has been crushed. Such a truck has been provided and placed in service. In the eight months it has been in operation the desired results have been fully attained. About twice as many samples as usual have been taken during that time by the same 2-pan crew assigned to this work. Many of the mines in the eastern part of the United States are in hilly or mountainous regions and can be reached only over rough, practically unimproved roads. The devitrification of lithium silicate glasses was studied to determine the effect of annealing temperature, composition, and additives on nucleation and crystallization. High-purity glasses, prepared from reagent-grade chemicals, had close to optical quality when prepared by a vacuum induction melting method developed during this research, The progress of devitrification was traced by differential thermal analysis and thermal expansion for those lithium metasilicate-silica compositions containing 80 to 90 percent silica. Microscopic studies of glasses partially devitrified at various temperatures and annealing times indicated that the primary initial mode of formation of individual crystals ,vas from densely crystalline zones that filled in as crystallization advanced Of the additives tested, calcium, potassium, and sodium helped promote devitrification with the least cracking or surface deformation. Tin oxide was most effective in reducing volume contrast ion during devitrification, but was not ClS effective in preventing cracking as calcium or potassium additions.

THE Bureau of Mines was established in July 1910 to conduct research and to establish standards for mining equipment and practices which would conserve human life, natural resources, and property in the mineral industries. Several lists of equipment approved by the Bureau as permissible for use in gassy coal mines have been issued since then. The lists covering all approved equipment except breathing apparatus and explosives have born consolidated into two publications: Bulletin 343. Permissible Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953, and Information Circular 8220, Permissible Mina Equipment Approved By The Bureau of Mines During 1953-62. The, purpose of this publication is to supplement Bulletin 343 and Information Circular 8220 with a listing of permissible equipment approved during 1963 and 1964. Recent changes in metallurgical practice, particularly those in flotation, have altered greatly the functions of the different units of a copper smelter. Gangue minerals are removed from the feed so much more thoroughly that the reverberatory furnace, once virtually a concentrator in which a low-grade ore was concentrated into a rich matte by virtue of the removal of gangue elements as slag, has become very largely a melting furnace in which the rich flotation concentrates are rendered molten so that they may be converted. Moreover, since the proportion of matte to slag in the reverberatory furnace output is greater than it was formerly, the amount of converter slag returned to the reverberatory for cleaning is, in comparison to the amount of slag actually formed in that furnace, also much larger. In some cases, approximately half of the reverberatory dump slag may have originated in the converter. The increase in the proportion of convertor slag to total slag produced has brought about certain consequences not entirely desirable. Converter slags contain a high percentage of iron and therefore are high in specific gravity and are very basic. A considerable guantity of magnetite, both dissolved and suspended as solid crystals, is always a component, The basic nature of the ordinary converter slag and the presence of the suspended magnetite crystals make impossible the reduction of the copper content of the slag below approximately 1 per cent by even the most prelonged settling, and a re-treating process is necessary. At present, general practice in western copper smelters is to return the converter slag molten to the reverberatory furnace. Here dilution by mixing, with slag formed in the reverberatory furnace and reaction with raw sulphides and siliceous materials in the reverberatory feed reduce the magnetite and increase the silicates to the point necessary for a satisfactory dump slag.

The stripping of coal with mechanical. equipment has progressed since the introduction of the first steam-powered shovel for the retóval of overburden at a mine in Pittsburg, Kans., in 1877...From the smart steam-powered shovels with dippers of less than a cubic yard capacity, small digging radius, and shovels that required manual moving, the trend has been toward large-capacity machines. Steam as power has been replaced largely by electricity, gasoline, and Diesel fuel, and dipper capacity as great as 35 cubic yards has been attained. Shovels and drag lines are self-propelled and revolve through 360°. The cost of these large-capacity modern machines is great, and in order to assure the return of the investment during the life of the property the reserve of coal in the area to be mined must be large;" Many comparatively small areas of coal suitable for strip mining exist, but these areas probably could not be mined, profitably with this large equip- ment. Therefore, heavy equipment has not been used in small areas because of the high cost in place of this equipment, the time and Atpense required to transport the machines to the mine site, and the construction of power lines if the machines are electrical powered.. Scrapers and light excavating equipment ane mobile, and the investment cost is not high. These units have been used in sirring the coal in small areas. A study to determine the methods in, yogue, and economic considerations involved in the use of such equipment was undertaken, and the information obtained is discussed in this report.
