An acid-extraction procedure developed in Germany for determining mineral matter in coal was investigated by the Bureau of Mines to determine its application to American coals. It was found to be suitable for all ranks of coal from anthracite to lignite if modified slightly for coals containing considerable quantities of calcium compounds, such as calcite or calcium humate. The precision of the method is satisfactory, and the results are probably closer to the true content of mineral matter than those obtained by empirical formulas. The method requires considerably more analytical data than the Parr or approximation formulas but is no more time consuming than obtaining the necessary data for the King, Maries, and Crossley formula (theoretically the most comprehensive empirical formula used). An appendix to this report includes a detailed description of a recommended procedure.

As part of its work for the improvement of safety conditions in mines , the Bureau of Mines has undertaken to establish a list of permissible storage - battery locomotives for use in gaseous mines , and , to this end , has issued Schedule 15 , "Procedure for Establishing a List of Permissible Storage -Battery Locomotives for Use in Gaseous Mines . " Up to the present time , two approvals * have been issued under this Schedule , and considerable testing work done on four other applications which have been made for approval . Prior to the publication of Schedule 15 , the Bureau conducted both field and laboratory investigations to determine the hazard from the batteries used in mine locomotives . ** These investigations indicated that the safety of the locomotive would depend largely on proper care of the battery , also on the use of a battery as mechanically rugged as possible . For this reason the Bureau staff , in testing locomotives submitted for approval , considered it advisable to subject the batteries to a jarring or bumping test to prove their adequacy as regards mechanical endurance and ruggedness . These tests on the batteries of the locomotives are described below.

Previous studies of magnetic separation of pyrite from coals have been reviewed critically. Magnetic susceptibilities of United States coals of differing rank have been measured. The effects of crushing, magnetic mixing, drying, weathering, and heat treatment on the enhancement of the magnetism of pyrite have been analyzed. The importance of size distribution of pyrite in the coal and the necessity of crushing to liberate the pyrite has been discussed. It has been found that the inherent susceptibilities of the carbonaceous, mineral-free portions of coals (? -0.5 X 10-6 in cgs units) and of relatively pure pyrite isolated from coals (? -0.3 X 10-6) do not permit efficient separation of pyrite from coal; the average susceptibility of the magnetic fraction of coal must be raised to 3 X 10-6. Friction forces encountered in crushing sedimentary pyrite embedded in coal do not increase its susceptibility. Subsequent weathering or heat treatment below 400° C leads to the formation of iron sulfate and hence increases the effective paramagnetism of pyrite. Ferromagnetic compounds of iron are not formed in significant quantities at temperatures below 400° C. The degree of liberation and apparent susceptibility of pyrite are the most important parameters in its separation. It is concluded that effective beneficiation of coals can be achieved by magnetic separation. A sufficient increase in the susceptibility can be achieved by converting less than 0.1 percent of pyrite into ferromagnetic compounds of iron. Such conversions occur only at temperatures >500° C. An investigation of the dielectric properties of coals and pyrite in the frequency range 0.1 to 60 Mhz indicates that the imaginary dielectric constant of the pyrite is about 100 times larger than that of coal. Exploratory experiments indicate that pyrite can be selectively heated to temperatures above 500° C without appreciable rise in the temperature of coal. It appears that dielectric heating of coals in the Ghz frequency range is the most feasible method of enhancing the paramagnetism of pyrite.

Drilling with water has the potential to significantly reduce the respirable dust concentrations generated from small-diameter rotary drills when drilling blastholes on surface mining operations. However, water adverseky affects tri- cone drill bits commonly used in surface drilling operations, causing excessive wear and premature replacement. Consequently, dry drilling with a dust collector system has the most widespread use in the industry. Tests have been conducted by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) on a newly designed device for smaller diameter drills that separates the water from the bailing air before it reaches the bit and thus provides the cost benefit of dry drilling while providing the benefit of wet drilling for dust suppression. The water that is delivered to the hole with the bailing air is separated from the air by a proprietary mechanical device that is encased in a drill sub (short section of drill rod/pipe) located immediately behind the cutting bit. A cascade cyclone and a real-time dust monitor were used to sample dust emissions from the holes. Dust concentrations and silica content were measured when drilling dry versus drilling wet. The tests show that drilling with this water separating sub can reduce both measured dust emissions from the boreholes and visible dust around the drill rig.

The underground junction or intersection is analogous to the doorway or window in a building in that the continuous wall or support for the overhead structure has been weakened by making the opening. Some type of bridge or support seems necessary to prevent roof sag and possibly eventual failure at this point, although frequently it appears that little is done until a fatal accident induces action. The intersection generally represents less than 15 percent of the exposed roof area. As a result of recent multiple fatalities, some of which occurred at or near intersections, the Bureau of Mines was asked to examine the junction-support problem more thoroughly and to report its findings. A national survey of the junction-support systems in use has been made by correspondence, and the local area has been canvassed rather thoroughly to determine just what and how much is being done.

It is designed to assist mine personnel in recognizing potentially hazardous ground conditions, by emphasizing the preliminary effects of developing unstable ground. Increased worker awareness can be expected to reduce the injuries and fatalities resulting from falls of roof, rib, and face.

Low-temperature heat capacities and high-temperature enthalpies for syn¬thetic Cu2S and CuS were measured. This investigation is part of the Bureau of Mines goals to provide thermodynamic data essential to the more efficient processing of copper ores, and thereby minimize the current dislocations in energy, environment, and mineral supply. Heat capacities were measured with an adiabatic calorimeter from 5 to 310 K, and resulted in S°298 = 27.76 for Cu2S(c) and S°298 = 16.05 cal/deg mole for CuS(c). Low-temperature values are tabulated for Cp°, S°, -(G°-Ho°)/T, and H°-Ho°. Enthalpies were measured with a copper block calorimeter from 298.15 to 1,600 K for Cu2S(c,1) and 298.15 to 780 K for CuS(c). The thermal behavior of CuS showed no transitions or other significant anomalies for the low- or high-temperature investigations. Cu2S showed reversible transitions at 376 K with an isothermal heat absorption of 0.865 kcal/mole, 720 K with an isothermal absorption of 0.280 kcal/mole, and approximately 1,400 K (congruent melting point) with a heat of fusion of 3.070 kcal/mole. High-temperature data are tabulated for H°-H°298, Cp°, S°, and -(G°-H°298)/T. Enthalpies are also expressed in equation form. The low¬and high-temperature data were combined with data from the literature to cal¬culate and tabulate ?Hf°, ?Gf°, and log Kf as a function of temperature.

In the context of the following report, an hazardous location can be described as any industrial area in/which flammable or explosive gases, vapors, and dusts can be encountered. When electrical apparatus is used in such hazardous atmospheres, the chance of a dust or gas ignition is ever present. Consequently, in an effort to reduce the ignition hazard, several protection systems have been devised. Such systems are termed electrical hazard reduction techniques. The most widely accepted and used of these, the explosion-proof enclosure, is the principal subject of this report. However, other techniques are briefly mentioned. Hazard reduction techniques used in coal mine atmospheres (which can contain methane, coal dust, and air mixtures) are classified as Group I. The explosion-proof enclosure commonly used in mines is defined by the USBM Schedule 2G as a device that can contain internal explosions of methane-air mixtures without undergoing damage or excessive distortion and without an ignition of a surrounding methane-air mixture or discharge of flame. (100) Internationally, the definition remains the same except the words "discharge of flame" are not present. (4,5,31,42,52,76,102) The latter description often refers to flame-roof enclosure construction, but the terms "flameproof: and "explosion-proof" commonly have the same connotation. These enclosures which may not be vapor tight, are distinguished by heavy-wall cast or welded construction and bolted or threaded close fitting flanges. The results of tests to determine the .regional applicability of four synthetic unit hydrograph models are presented. The SCS curvilinear (Haan), SCS single triangle, Williams and TVA double triangle unit hydrograph models were tested on 271 events from 38 USDA experimental watersheds in 14 physiographic provinces. Though inconclusive due to the limited number of events analyzed, the results indicated a regional tendency for each model, with the SCS curvilinear unit hydrograph method generally performing best overall. It outperformed the SCS single triangle by predicting better shape; they differed less than 2 percent in time of peak and peak rate predictions. The Williams model performed well at Oxford, Mississippi and Coshocton, Ohio, which suggests it may be applicable to surface mined lands within the Northern and Central Appalachian Plateau and Texas coal producing regions. The TVA model is applicable to the Appalachian Plateau, specifically the Cumberland Plateau. A second test using only the SCS curvilinear unit hydrograph on 11 small watersheds and 50 events was conducted to investigate the effect of the excesss rainfall pattern on simulation results. A Green and Ampt infiltration model was coupled with the SCS unit hydrograph model to determine if peak rate and timing errors noted in the regional test could be minimized with an alternate to the SCS curve number model for determining infiltration losses. The results confirm the curve number model is the better approach to determining the excess rainfall pattern for unit hydrograph simulation.

Making sure workers within the aggregates industry go home safely each day is the goal of aggregate companies throughout the United States. At the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers are contributing to NIOSH’s vision of safety and health through a fact-finding approach to reducing injuries/illnesses in various mineral sectors. Surveillance data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has been the primary source for such analyses. It helps to focus research efforts on key machinery, workers, and their tasks. The crushed stone category referred to in this article is represented as crushed and broken stone in the MSHA database.

Twelve laboratories from the Western United States and Canada participated in radon progeny intercomparison measurements at the U.S. Bureau of Mines radon calibration facility in March 1987. The participants intercom pared grab-sampling and automated equipment methods at high and low concentrations of radon progeny and condensation nuclei (CN). The objective of this intercomparison was to determine if the measurement procedures and equipment of the North American facilities are equivalent. The sampling results showed good agreement among all participants. The standard deviation for the working level measurements was less than 3.5% for 1.70 working level (WL) and less than 8.8% for 0.21 WL. This relatively good agreement was achieved by using alpha standards calibrated by National Bureau of Standards (NBS) and by closely checking and monitoring airflows.

This report is the third of a series on convergence of roof and floor in coal mines and subsidence of surface that accompanies it. The first paper5/ dealt with extraction in a mechanized mine (Montour 10) having relatively short rib lines that retreat rapidly. The second dealt with extraction in a mine (Crucible) in which coal was loaded. by hand and in which the rib lines wore long and slow-moving. The present report deals with a mine (Gibson) in which conditions approximated those in the Crucible mine, except that the distance between room centers was considerably less and the pillars were narrower in consequence. Moreover, the average cover was less and the studies were made under the steep hillside of a stream valley compared with a gently rolling surface over the portions of the second mine studied. Gibson mine lies in the east-central hart of Washington County, Pa. , approximately midway between the Montour 10 end Crucible mines on a north-south line. A cooperative agreement covering the work was made with the Hillman Coal & Coke Co. through W. L. Affelder, vice president. This paper describes the methods used in the investigation, gives excerpts from the data obtained, and offers such generalizations as appear to be justified.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a process to utilize waste heat from electric arc steelmaking furnace gases to preheat the ferrous material charged to the furnace. Four heat exchangers were designed, tested, and operated successfully on 1-ton electric arc furnaces. Briquets and pellets were charged continuously, both countercurrent to the hot furnace offgasses and at ambient temperatures. A comparison of the electrical energy consumed in each situation showed that preheating can lower energy requirements as much as 15.6 percent.

After a long series of laboratory and in-mine tests, a cost- effective, mineworthy, reduced-noise auger miner cutting head was de signed, fabricated, and field-tested by Wyle Laboratories under contract to the Bureau of Mines. Compared with standard auger cutting heads, the new heads reduced noise by 10 dBA at the jacksetter's position and by 6 dBA at the operator's position. This report contains detailed fabrication instructions, including engineering drawings, that show how a standard auger cutting head can be modified to produce a reduced-noise auger.

In the repetitive electrowinning of tungsten from scheelite, the calcium impurity buildup in the molten electrolyte results in decreased metal purity, metal recovery, and current efficiency. Periodic addition of B2O3, which reacts with the lime liberated from the scheelite, more than tripled the life of the electrolyte in winning 99.9-percent-pure tungsten and also reduced the number of units of electrolyte required per unit of tungsten recovered from six to four.

An inventory was made by the Bureau of Mines of wastes of mineral origin, water requirements, treatment of wastes, and water treatment practice of 163 industrial installations in the Lower Missouri River Basin. This is the second and concluding report on the survey, conducted in cooperation with the Missouri Basin Field Committee of the Department of the Interior as part of the Missouri Basin project. Principal industries covered by this second report are: Sand and gravel, coal, meat, ice, brewing, paint, petroleum, chemical, fabricated metals, and a number of industries having either no waterborne wastes, or none of mineral origin. Gravel, sand, and silt from 47 producers are the major wastes, totaling 6 million tons annually, Coal mine wastes in the form of slurried solids from washing crude coal are second in volume, totaling 100,000 tons per year. They contain an average of about 40 percent coal. Salt is the third largest waste, amounting to 28,000 tons per year, Next is calcium carbonate, most of which is formed in water treatments, Because of its high unit value, chromic acid is important, although the waste quantity is much smaller; cyanide wastes are also significant because large quantities of sodium hydroxide and chlorine are consumed in their treatments prior to disposal. The various industries discharging wastes use 38 billion gallons of water annually; the recirculation rate is 109 billion gallons per year. The plants discharging no waterborne mineral wastes use 2 billion gallons of water per year and recirculate more than 1 billion gallons. Sand and gravel plants use 13.5 billion gallons; petroleum refineries use 10 billion gallons in direct use and recirculate 82 billion gallons per year.

The Belize economy recorded modest growth during 1980; the growth of the gross domestic product (GDP) in real terms was between 1% and 2%. At current prices, the 1980 GDP reached $108 million2. This output was largely attributed to the performance of a few industries, mostly nonminerals. Such performance improved significantly the balance of payments situation by reducing the deficit from $19 million in 1979 to $4 million in 1980. The rate of inflation was an estimated 18% in 1980 and would have been greater if not for a conservative monetary policy and price control on a number of essential items. Expert earnings increased $43 million, or 50%, from the 1979 level. After increasing more than 25% in 1979, imports increased only 6% in 1980 to a level of $141 million owing to the decline in investment and stabilization of petroleum prices. The balance of trade deficit was $9.8 million in 1980, a marked improvement from the 1979 level of $45.1 million. The mineral output for Belize accounted for only a fraction of 1% of the GDP. Such activity was limited to the production of limestone, marl, and sand and gravel, all of which were primarily used in construction of the Northern Highway between Orangewalk and Belize City. Mineral resources are deficient or nonexistent in Belize for the majority of metals and nonmetals, although the Government and others continue to believe that petroleum must exist in Belize. The proximity to Mexican oilfields and the growing finds in the Peters area of Guatemala support this expectation. The commonly used exact methods (1-2) to determine the WL measure the total a activity or the total number of a counts during three preselected time periods. Due to the half-lives involved (TRaB = 26.8 min, TRaC = 19.7) I these methods take 3S minutes to complete the a activity Ra measurements. Methods using the total a counts, obtained at times less than about one RaB half-life after the end of sampling run into statistical 214 problems. These methods are almost blind to RaB (Pb214) as a consequence of its relatively long half period (see above) and the fact that RaB is a ß emitter. The way out of this dilema is to measure RaB directly through its ß activity. Since RaB's daughter Rae (Bi214) is also a ß emitter, the two f3 spectra have to be separated to obtain RaB alone. How this is accomplished 1s described in subsequent sections describing the theory of the IWLM and its calibration. 2.0 THEORY The IWLM samples air for two minutes and counts this airs ample for two minutes starting 3 sec after the end of the sampling period. The instrument has three channels. The lower a channel, the upper a channel, and one ß channel. The total RaA counts observed are accumulated in the lower a channel, the total RaC? counts are stored in the upper a channel. The total ß counts from RaB and RaC are recorded in the ß channel. These three quantities are functions of NA, NB, and NC, the unknown concentrations
