Mineral production was of little significance in the country's economy, and Bangladesh was not a world-ranked producer of any mineral commodity during 1977. Natural gas was the most important mineral exploited; however, reserves were sufficient to allow for much greater production, Economically, Bangladesh made some progress in 1977-782 in its struggle against poverty, underdevelopment, and rapidly increasing population. The gross domestic product (GDP) grew 8%, mainly owing to a 13% increase in food grain production, the key economic indicator in this highly agricultural nation. GDP at current prices dropped slightly in Fiscal Year (FY) 1976.77 to $6.6 billion3 and rose to $7.2 billion in FY 1977.78. The population rose from 81 million in FY 1975-76 to about 85 million in FY 1977-78, resulting in an increase of per capita GDP from $83 to $85 during the same period. The high annual population growth rate, over 3% in 1976 and about 2.8% in 1977, was recognized by the Government as the main problem facing the country. Average density was 525 people per square kilometer. A similar density would have the entire world population living within the continental United States.

The Sullman, Picard & Ballot patent, No. 835120, is a process of concentrating ore which consists in mixing the powdered ore with water, adding a small proportion, a fraction of 1 per cent on the ore, of an oily liquid having a preferential affinity for metal- liferous matter, agitating the mixture until the oil-coated mineral matter forms into a froth and separating the froth from the remain- der by flotation. The process is known as an air-flotation process which consists in the use of a frothing agent in conjunction with such agitation of the ore pulp as will distribute the metallic particles of the ore throughout the mixture and produce bubbles of air and bring them in contact in the mixture with the metallic particles so dis- tributed. The bubbles will become attached to such metallic par- ticles, carrying them separately from the particles of gangue up through the surface of the mixture where they can be readily collected by skimming, by overflow, or by the use of other well-known devices. The air-flotation process was a patentable invention in the discov- ery made in March, 1905, and was not anticipated and is valid. Prior to that time there had been no suggestion in the arts that a propor- tion of 0.1 per cent of oil to ore or of any other fraction of 1 per cent of oil to ore would or might result in successful concentration. While the ascertainment that such a minute proportion of oil would affect a successful concentration of ore through a flotation process was a discovery, it was nevertheless of such a character, viewed with respect to the circumstances under which it was made, as to involve inven- tion and confer patentability. Claims 1 and 12 of the Sullman, Picard & Ballot patent, No. 835120, for a process of concentrating ore, known as the air-flotation process, are valid; but claim 9 is so indefinite as to render the claim void. The object of the Sullman, Greenway & Higgins patent, No. 962678, dated June 28, 1910, for improvements in ore concentration, is to separate metalliferous matter, graphite, and the like from gangue by means of oil, fatty acid, or other substances which have a prefer- ential affinity for metalliferous matter over gangue, and it is valid. The Greenway patent, No. 1099699, dated June 9, 1914, for improve- ments in the concentration of ores is invalid, as in view of the prior art the omission to use acid in the process can not confer patenta- bility.

Review of the literature on solid solutions discloses that the relation between composition and magnetic susceptibility is not linear . Recalculation using a transformation of composition values to parameter v values provides for a linear relation with the magnetic susceptibility to the 1/2 power . Application to minerals is illustrated by the olivine and enstentite series .

Reliably measure stress chan¬ges in order to assess stability of mine openings. Approach: A durable, permissible, sensor and readout system have been developed and tested. How It Works: The stress sensing element is a taut steel wire which is, vibrated at its natural frequency, If the tension on the wire is changed because of deformation of the sensor housing, the natural frequency of the wire changes. This effect is similar to decreasing or increasing the pitch of a violin string by loosening or tightening it. Because the stress sensor electrical output is a frequency signal, rather than an amplitude signal, its accuracy is unaffected by the resistance of the signal wire, or other attenuation. Signal wires can be a mile or longer without affecting accuracy. When a button is pushed on the readout box, the sensor wire is electromagnetically excited and vibrates at its natural frequency. That signal causes a readout in illuminated digits. (By referring to calibration chart and the previous reading, the user knows the change in stress.) This system is permissible. To install the sensor, a slightly oversize hole is drilled into the mine pillar. Next, a special tool is used to both position the sensor and wedge it in place. Figure 1, shows the sensor and its integral wedge and hole-fitting piece.

"As the result of the work of an efficient safety organization, the Midwest Refining Co. at its various operations and particularly in the Salt Creek field has been able to show a definite accident reduction. Lost-time accidents during the past year have been reduced to a small number as compared with previous years, and infection cases have been almost eliminated.The accident-prevention work of the Midwest Refining Co. is in charge of the department of industrial relations, with a director as the administrative head; two safety men handle the work directly at Midwest, Wyo. A competent medical staff with a well-equipped hospital at Midwest is also an important factor in the prompt and proper treatment of injured persons when an employee is injured, he is given first-aid and then taken to the hospital with minimum delay.About 1,450 persons are employed in the 4 departments (production, gas, pipe lines, and electrical) and in the 34 districts of the Midwest Refining Co. The work at Midwest spreads over a considerable area, and new drilling operations, pipe work, and similar activities require the services of many small gangs of workers. Complete supervision, of each job, whether shall or large, is possible through the large number of superintendents, foremen, and gang pushers employed; thus, there are 20 superintendents, 78 foremen, and 115 gang pushers. The largest number of men under any one toss is approximately 15, and it is probable that much of the good safety record is due to this intensive supervision. These company officials, including the gang pushers, have been impressed with the idea that it is their duty to see that the men under them do not get hurt; the responsibility of instructing new employees in safety practices is placed directly upon them. Monthly meetings of the field officials, including superintendents, foremen, and gang pushers, and as far as possible the men, of each district are held with the safety engineer. Both officials and men are encouraged to bring up for discussion any practice or proposals looking to the changing of any conditions that will"

The United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) developed SPONCOM to aid in the assessment of the spontaneous combustion risk of an underground mining operation. A prior knowledge of the spontaneous combustion risk of the coal and factors that increase that risk can be useful in the planning and development of proactive monitoring, ventilation, and prevention plans for the mining operation. Interactive data input screens prompt the user for information about the coal's chemical and physical properties, the geologic and mining conditions encountered in the mining of the coal, and the mining practices employed. During the input process, 'expand' screens provide the user with specific information on each input parameter. This information includes a description of the parameter and its effect on the overall spontaneous combustion risk. The program logic determines the coal's relative spontaneous combustion potential, based on the coal's proximate and ultimate analyses, and heating value. The program then evaluates the impact of the coal properties, geologic and mining conditions, and mining practices on the spontaneous combustion risk of the mining operation. The program output provides details on each factor that increases the risk of spontaneous combustion.

Although descriptions of the methods of analysis of explosives are to be found in many books on explosives, and in works on engineer- ing chemistry or chemical analysis, most of these descriptions are incomplete and lacking in details. The methods of analysis employed in the laboratories of most explosives factories are frequently treated as trade secrets, and very little information is published from such laboratories. This bulletin outlines the methods of analysis that are used by the Bureau of Mines in the examination of certain classes of explo- sives. The present form of most of these methods has been worked out in the bureau's explosives laboratory. The methods employed by Prof. C. E. Munroe were taken as a basis, and were elaborated to meet the demands incident to the treatment of complicated mix- tures and to the development of the explosives art. A subsequent bulletin will discuss the methods of analysis of "permissible" explosives, many of the latter being of decidedly complicated char- acter and requiring special treatment. This bulletin presents the methods of analysis of "ordinary" dynamite, and the ammonia, gelatin, low-freezing, and granular dynamites, and the common grades of black gunpowder and black blasting powder. The bulletin is published by the bureau for the information of all persons inter- ested in explosives and their safe and efficient use in mining work. As the term "ordinary" dynamite, though much used, has no conventional meaning, and may be used to cover a wide variety of compositions of matter, it may be noted that the standard dynamite used at the Pittsburgh testing station is a good example of the "ordinary" dynamite known in this country. In a factorial experiment, blasting caps were detonated in three sizes of shotholes in mortar with three types of stemming--dry sand, wet sand, and hydrostone. Free-surface displacement pulses were recorded with a capacitive-displacement gage at a distance of 15 inches. The effects of decoupling and the type of stemming on the amplitude and the duration of the displacement pulse were determined. Both the amplitude and the duration of the displacement pulse were significantly decreased by increasing the decoupling, but they were little affected by the type of stemming.

The Bureau of Mines has recently conducted a study of results obtained in analyzing similar samples of coal and coke by 25 laboratories throughout then country, in comparison with results obtained in the Bureau's coal laboratory at Pittsburgh. The purpose of this work was primarily to obtain a comparison of the methods of coal analysis used by the laboratories of the American Gas Association. Therefore, four standard samples of coal end one of coke ware prepared in the Bureau of Mines coal laboratory at Pittsburgh, and portions sent to each laboratory. At the same time, a like number of standard samples were submitted to 12 commercial laboratories rot affiliated with the Association, for the purpose of comparing their analyses with the results is obtained by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the American Gas Association. Tire comparison is based on the average of 24 analyses by the Bureau of Mines on each kind of coal, and the accompanying curves show the deviation from this average analysis, together with deviations from the check limits of the American Society for Testing Materials.

[As part of the Bureau of Mines effort to provide thermodynamic data for advancement of mineral resources technology, the standard Gibbs energies of formation (?G°f) of MnS (manganese sulfide) and Fe0.9 S (pyrrhotite) were investigated with a high-temperature galvanic cell employing stabilized Zr02 (zirconia) as the electrolyte. Potential measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, MnS, MnO, S02 (g, 1 atm)//Zr02//02(g, 0.0114 atm), Pt with the overall cell reaction MnS (s) + 1.5 02 (g, 0.0114 atm) = MnO (s) + S02 (g) . (1) These results give the standard Gibbs energy of formation of MnS for the reaction Mn (s) + 0.552 (g) = MnS (s) (2) ?G°f = -66.487 + 15.19 x 10-3T±0.207 kcal/mole (896.4 - 1,208.1 K) (3) where temperature (T) is expressed in kelvins. Similar measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, FeO .9S, Fe304 , S02 (g, 1 atm) //Zr02//02 (g, 0.0114 atm) , Pt with the overall cell reaction 10/3 FeO .9 S (s) + 16/3 02 (g, 0.0114 atm) = Fe.,04 (s) +10/3 S02 (g). Provide a means for continuous measurement and display of respirable dust concentrations in a mine so that when high dust levels occur, timely, corrective measures can be taken. Approach Develop a personal dust monitor that (1) is small and light enough to be worn by a miner, (2) has the capability to continuously measure the respirable fraction of coal dust, (3) will display the respirable dust concentration in mg/m3, and (4) can store the average respirable dust concentration and sampling time of several sampling shifts for later play-back. How It Works The personal dust monitor (PDM-1) uses light scattering and convection air currents to sample the respirable fraction of coal dust. Convective air currents cause dust laden air to pass through an open-celled sampling chamber (light sensing chamber). A near infrared light emitting diode (LED) located in the PDM-1 emits pulses of light. The pulsed light passes through a focusing lens and glass window into the sampling chamber. The light is then reflected, scattered, and refracted by the airborne dust particles. Light scattered within the angles of 450 to 900 (the angles within which the intensity of the scattered light is most closely related to respirable-size dust particles) passes through another window and is focused on a light detector. The light detector signal is amplified and presented as analog output voltage for conventional recording. This signal is also converted to a digital signal which the microprocessor uses with its crystal clock to calculate the 10-second average dust concentration, the shift average concentration, the time-weighted average concentration, and the elapsed sampling time. The microprocessor also stores dust concentrations of the seven most recent sampling periods, controls the operation of the LED and detector, and operates the liquid crystal display (LCD).

The Bureau of Mines is currently conducting a four year mineral assessment of the 5.7 million acre Valdez Creek Mining District in Southcentral Alaska, as part of its ongoing statewide mining district evaluation program. This report is a summary of the 1987 field work, which included the examination of mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences in the study area. Placer gold has been the most important metal produced in the area, and production totaled 161,131 oz, with the majority of the production coming from the Valdez Creek Mine. Lode gold and silver production totaled 1,581 oz and 8,617 oz, respectively and came mainly from the Golden Zone Mine. Varying amounts of other metals, including copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, antimony, chrome, nickel, cobalt, tin, tungsten and platinum exist in the study area. Occurrences of industrial limestone and coal are also located in the area.

"In trying various coals at one of the Government power plants, comparison was made of the ash softening temperature of each coal, with the clinkering tendencies of the coal when burned in the furnace. The proximate analyses, ash softening temperature and plant reports as to clinkering were tabulated. It was desired to bring out any correlation that might appear between the ash softening temperature found in the laboratory, and the clinkering of the ash as found in the boiler furnace.Each coal used was sampled and analyzed, and the standard ash fusion test made. The clinkerring of the coal in the furnace was observed by the furnace operator. The furnace equipment consisted of the ""V"" or Murphy type of stoker with the ordinary fire-brick arch roof. With such arrangement very high furnace temperatures are apt to be produced at the ratings carried at this plant.The softening temperature of ash is defined as the temperature at which small cone of the ash, as tested in the laboratory furnace, has fused down to a spherical lump, The softening interval is the difference between the softening temperature and the temperature at which the first rounding, or bending, of the apex of the cone takes piece. The flowing interval is the difference between the softening temperature and the temperature at which the ash has reached a fluid condition as shown by spreading out over the base in a flat layer.While the analyses of the different samples of the some coal did not vary appreciably, the ash softening temperatures were not always so consistent. It will be noted from the following examples that the ash softening temperatures of different samples of the same coal differ as much as 290° F, Hence, in order to judge this property of a coal, many samples ore desirable, taken from many different shipment."

Legislation and Government Programs.-The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) held public hearings in early 1975 on proposed standards for exposure to inorganic arsenic. The findings obtained at the hearings will be considered to promulgate emission standards. Domestic Production.-Arsenic trioxide (As203) was produced domestically only at the Tacoma, Wash. copper smelter of ASARCO Incorporated. Production data cannot be published. Output rose 9% over that of 1974, shipments were less than half those of 1974, and stocks rose 31 %. Production of arsenic metal, begun by ASARCO in August 1974, continued in 1975.

Significantly reduce respirable dust exposures of longwall shearer operators when cutting out at the headgate. Approach As a result of Bureau research, a ventilation curtain is recommended to be mounted between the stage loader and the coal rib to more effectively prevent the ventilation air from blowing across the shearer drum as it cuts out at the headgate. Some mine operators already employ this method of reducing dust, but a vast majority do not. How It Works One source of extreme concentrations of respirable dust for longwall shearer operators is the shearer headgate drum as it cuts through into the headgate entry. As the drum cuts into the entry, it is exposed to the primary ventilation airstream. The high velocity air passes through and over the rotating drum, picking up large quantities of dust.

This study concerns itself with the effects of diesel exhaust on mine ventilation systems. The approach here consisted of the development of mathematical models for emissions, dilution, and dispersion of gaseous pollutants from diesels. The general scheme was to use partial differential equations to predict concentration growths. Specifically, the following situations were modeled: 1. A single stationary diesel engine working in a single roadway. 2. A single diesel engine moving with uniform velocity in a single roadway. 3. Multiple diesel engines moving continuously in a cycle in a roadway with appreciable leakage. 4 Multiple diesel engines moving continuously in a cycle in a roadway with little or no leakage. 5. Multiple diesel engines moving randomly in a roadway with uniform air velocity.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a procedure for removing excess iron from representative samples of bauxite ore from the Quapaw deposit of American Cyanamid Co., Saline County, Ark., in order to produce a beneficiated ore suitable for use in the alum industry, At the request of the sponsoring company, the samples were reduction-roasted at 800° C. and then magnetically separated. Although some rejection of iron was effected under these conditions, the general results were not satisfactory, A much more successful procedure, from the standpoints of both rejection of iron and recovery of alumina, consisted of a short (l5-minute), low-temperature (400° C.) oxidizing roast, followed by a 2-minute interval in a hydrogen atmosphere, then cooling to room temperature, and, finally, high-intensity magnetic separation to remove the iron.
