This report describes an investigation in which we used iron-doped diesel fuel to generate metal-bearing diesel particles and a subsequent analysis of the particles using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). For this study, DPM was generated by a 1.5-L diesel engine and the fuel was doped with ferrocene to enhance the level of iron in the system. The exhaust particles were collected on TEM grids and analyzed using the Philips CM12 TEM/EDS instrument. Results show that when the iron-to-carbon (soot) ratio (Fe/C) in the engine is low, the exhaust particles have morphologies similar to those for the undoped case, but at a threshold Fe/C value of 0.013 (for this engine), homogeneously nucleated metallic nanoparticles are formed and begin agglomerating. The number and size of these nanoparticles increase with level of doping. Metal-bearing particles that span a wider size range are also formed. Agglomeration of metallic and carbon particles is observed in two distinct modes: attachment of iron primary particles (5–10 nm in diameter) to carbon agglomerates, and coagulation of iron agglomerates (20–200 nm in diameter) with carbon agglomerates. Results of this work imply that as new engine technologies reduce soot levels in the engine and/or levels of trace metals in the fuel are increased, the generation of metallic nanoparticles may ensue, creating a potential health concern. This report describes the redesign, development and field demonstration of a remote shotcrete lining system, capable of operating in shafts and mines from 8 to 16 feet in diameter at depths up to 1000 feet. The original contractural scope of work outlining problems and remedial measures associated with a previous unit proved inadequate. Significant additional effort was necessary in order to fulfill the project objectives of producing a functionally reliable remote shotcrete lining system. Included with the engineering and technical description of the system, is a comprehensive technology package. Included with this material is ancillary equipment, materials selection procedures, mix-design data, quality control and assurance program, selection and training of personnel and the organizational aspects required to operate the entire system. The report concludes with details of a successfully completed borehole lining operation at the Nevada Test Site. An irregular 104 inch diameter borehole was lined at a rate of 4.8 feet per hour and 20 feet per hour respectively for 8-9 inch and a 2 to 3 inch shotcrete thickness.

The principal minerals produced in the Dominion of Fiji in 1982 were unrefined gold, silver, and tellurium. The combined value of these commodities was about $16 million,2 representing over 85% of the total value of mineral output. Cement, sand and gravel, and quarry products were the other minerals produced in Fiji. Despite the small part played by minerals in Fiji's economy, exploration on land and in the coastal areas was carried out by several international mining companies representing Australian, British, Canadian, West German, and U.S. interests. At the end of 1982, 30 prospecting licenses covering 2,300 square kilometers were issued. Most licenses were for copper, zinc, gold, and silver. Total expenditure on mineral exploration was $3.5 million.

The petrographer engaged in examining the products resulting from the beneficiation of ores and rock minerals is constantly required to develop new means and methods of assaying microscopically the results of such operations. From time to time investigators have published descriptions of apparatus that have aided in solving problems in processes f physical separation. Thus, in 191.9, Coghill and Bonardi 31 published a paper covering the application of the binocular microscope and camera lucida to the microscopic analysis of pulverized ores. Similar work has been published by Schneiderhohn 4/, Schwartz 5/, and Head and his associates6/, 7/, 8/. The present paper goes further and considers application of the polarizing comparison-microscope to problems directly concerned with mineral dressing where it is desirable to compare analogous products, and in addition it suggests new uses in various related fields. This work was conducted under the cooperative agreements of the Southern Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines and. the University of Alabama.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Northwest Barricade LLC (NWB) conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel fire blocking gel for use in underground coal mines to extinguish or to retard the growth of a coal fire. The gel agent was subjected to controlled laboratory testing to assess its ability to delay coal ignition. It was then evaluated to determine if manual fire hose application could be used to apply the agent to mine roofs and ribs to provide a safe egress for mine rescue teams from a fire area. The gel agent was also evaluated in a water sprinkler system to determine its potential for use in conveyor belt fire suppression systems. The agent was then tested in live-fire exercises to examine its effectiveness in retarding and extinguishing a deep-seated coal fire and wood fire. Lastly, the ability of a Mine Rescue Team to quickly and safely apply the gel agent to a mine entry during a simulated mine fire exercise was determined.

"The electrostatic charge on spray droplets of ionic surfactant solutions and coal particles was measured and the results were correlated with the dust collection efficiency. When various surfactant were added, the magnitude of the droplet charge increased significantly and it was observed to be a function of surfactant type and concentration. The concentration of maximum droplet charge coincided with surfactant concentration where maximum collection efficiency was observed for these surfactants. Particles of coal also carried substantial amount of charge magnitude of which seemed to be a function of coal rank.Based on the results presented in this paper, it was concluded that ionic surfactant primarily act as a strong electrostatic charge inducer for droplets. Due to interactions between these highly charged droplets and naturally charged particles, the efficiency of droplet-particle collisions play a primary role when compared to the wetting and engulfment phenomenon which could only follow a successful collision. INTRODUCTIONWater spray are widely used to suppress airborne dust in mine atmospheres (Walton and Woolcock, 1960; Kobrick, 1970; Hamilton, 1974; Jayaraman et al., 1986). Several investigators have considered the use of surfactants to enhance the effectiveness of water sprays especially for difficult to wet particles such as those of coal (Glanville and Wightman, 1979). The capture of dust particles by water droplets involves droplet-particle collisions, adhesion of particles to droplets, and engulfment of particles into droplets. Surfactants affect these sub processes through their influence on droplet charge, surface tension, and wetting. The last two mechanism have been thoroughly studied in recent years (Walker et al., 1952; Cohen and Rosen, 1981; Glenville and Haley, 1982; Chander et al., 1988; 1991). However, little attention has been paid to the role of electrical charge on particles and droplets on the collision and adhesion of spray droplets and dust particles."

Of the 19 major mine fire events (including thermal events) that have occurred in the last 6 years (2000-2005), it is estimated that remotely constructed mine seals could have been used at 65% of the events to control or suppress the fire. Underground observations of seals that have been remotely installed during mine fire events show that they often do not fully achieve mine roof-to-floor and rib-to-rib closure. Unfortunately, the inability to reliably close the mine void has limited or precluded the regular use of this technology. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is conducting full-scale underground experiments at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine to identify and remedy existing remote sealing technology shortcomings, to develop novel technologies, and to transfer the new or improved technologies to the mining industry. This paper will discuss the remote mine seal testing program and will provide the results of the in-mine experiments. This study is one of a number conducted to determine the concentration of dust in the air during the complete cycle of operation in wet drilling information as to various factors connected with drilling in mining operations is considered to be of definite value in the control and prevention of air dustiness, and it is particularly desirable to ascertain What features of present-day wet-drilling operations in mine work contribute to dust disease and to remedy deficiencies when they are found. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A testing alit through rock strata is being developed by the Mining Division of the United States bureau of Mines at Mount Weather, Va., and the tests discussed in this report were conducted there. This experimental alit in rock, constitutes a typo of laboratory where mine conditions can be closely simulated and where many of the variables likely to occur in an actual mine can be eliminated or at least controlled with reasonable effort, thus affording maximum opportunities to secure fundamental data uncomplicated by extraneous conditions. Measure dangerously high concentrations (20 to 500 g/m3) of flammable, airborne dust. Approach Development of high concentration dust monitor (HCDM) which will measure mass concentrations of air borne dust by the principle of beta-ray attenuation. How It Works The HCDM is a battery powered, portable instrument that weighs 10.5 kg. It is capable of making continual (10 sec. time resolution) measurements of high concentrations of airborne dust and can record up to 8 hours of data in an internal memory. The data can be read out later on an analog or digital recorder. An internal pump pulls airborne dust into the sampling section, which contains a low-energy beta-ray source and a Geiger counter detector. No beta radiation escapes from the instrument, and no license is required for the operator. The mass concentration measurement is made while the dust is still airborne. Beta-ray attentuation is independent of particle size and composition of the dust, so the HCDM can he used with many types of dusts which may be airborne in flammable concentrations. A knowledge of the composition and minimum explosive concentration of the dust is necessary to understand the significance of the data from the HCDM. The HCDM was designed to measure air-

Although wheelchair users are regularly subjected to whole-body vibrations little research has been conducted to assess these vibrations or attempt to reduce them [2,3,5]. Most of the wheelchair and whole-body vibration research done to this point has been conducted on manual wheelchairs. Van Sickle et al showed that manual wheelchair propulsion over a simulated road course produces vibration loads that exceed the ISO 2631-1 standards for the fatigue-decreased proficiency boundary at the seat of the wheelchair as well as the head of the user [6]. In a study by Boninger et al [1], 66% of wheelchair users reported neck pain since acquiring their wheelchair. One of the key reasons believed to be the cause of pain, was the exposure to whole-body vibration. Kwarciak et al [4] and Wolf et al [7] performed similar studies using two methods of analysis to evaluate vibrations on suspension and non-suspension wheelchairs while descending curbs of varying heights. Both studies revealed no significant difference in the abilities of the wheelchairs to reduce the amounts of vibrations transferred to the wheelchair user. Although the efforts of wheelchair companies to reduce the amounts of whole-body vibration transmitted to wheelchair users through the addition of suspension systems is encouraging, the technology is not yet ideal. Additionally, the research to date has focused on manual wheelchairs exclusively, while little attention has been shown to powered wheelchairs. Methods This study includes the use of two suspension electric powered wheelchairs: The Quickie S-626 and the Invacare 3G Torque SP Storm Series. Each subject tested all of the configurations of the suspension wheelchairs. These included the Invacare with suspension, the Quickie with suspension set to three settings (most stiff, least stiff, and 50% stiffness), and both wheelchairs with solid inserts to act as non-suspension wheelchairs. Sixteen able bodied subjects have been recruited for this study so far. In each of the configurations of the wheelchairs, the subjects traversed an Activities of Daily Living (ADL) course. Vibrations were collected from a tri-axial accelerometer attached to a seat plate beneath the cushion during driving over the activities course. A mixed model ANOVA was used to determine if there were differences between suspensions based on Vibration Dose Value (VDV). Results Statistical analyses of the VDV data revealed significant differences between the six different suspensions over each of the obstacles in the activities of daily living course. Post-hoc analyses revealed that for each of the obstacles, significant differences existed between the Invacare suspension and the Invacare solid insert. For the Quickie power wheelchair the solid insert setting was not significantly different from the most-stiff setting for each of the obstacles

The Bureau of Mines and Kaiser Steel Corp. are cooperatively demonstrating the shield-type roof support in the longwall mining of a 10-1/2-foot-thick coalbed at the York Canyon mine near Raton, N. Mex. As part of the demonstration, the shield supports have been successfully and safely moved from a completed longwall face to a new longwall face. When these shield supports were moved in 1976 they were the largest and heaviest longwall support system in use in U.S. coal mines. The shield supports, preparations for moving them, the actual move, and installation at the new face are discussed.

"The Workman's Compensation Law of Indiana, enacted in 1915, amended in 1917, 1919, 1923, and 1927, and in 1929 named the Indiana Workmen's Compensation Act of 1929, provides for a weekly compensation for disability due to accidents of 55 per cent of the average weekly wage of the employee, to start on the eighth day of disability. Compensation is computed from a maximum and minimum weekly wage of $30 and $16, respectively. Thus, the maximum weekly compensation is $16.50 and the minimum $8.80; the total compensation paid is not to exceed $5,000.In addition to the compensation the employer is required to pay all medical, surgical, hospital, and nurse fees for a period of 30 days and may be required to pay such fees for an additional 30 days at the direction of the Industrial Board of Indiana. In the case of fatalities the employer must contribute $100 toward funeral expenses.The law also stipulates that ""the employer shall keep a record of all injuries, fatal or otherwise, received by his employees in the course of their employment,"" also that the employer shall report within one week of their occurrence all accidents that cause either the death of the employee or the loss of more than one day's work. However, no standard form is furnished or required by the industrial board on which the employer shall keep a record of accidents, neither is he required to report the time of return to work of the injured employee unless the period of disability exceeds seven days and the accident thus becomes compensable. Hence, no record is kept of noncompensable accidents other than the first report sent to the industrial board by the employer.If the employer were required to keep a complete and concise record of all accidents, in duplicate, on a special form either furnished or required by the board, giving all of the essential data in regard to the accidents, and if he were required to submit a copy of this record to the board at the end of the fiscal year, the data thus assembled would not only be of material assistance to the board, particularly in making up its annual report, but would also furnish information of much value in the study of accident causes and what may be done to remove them.Those industries that have made marked progress in reducing accidents keep such records, as it is only through a full knowledge of how accidents occur that intelligent steps can be taken to prevent their recurrence. Unfortunately, the mining industry as a whole in Indiana has not kept pace with many other industries in reducing accidents, and it is urged as an aid to improvement that a thorough and complete record of mining accidents be kept."

The Great Eastern nickel deposit is located in the western foothills of the Virgin Mountains in the Copper King or Bunkerville district situated in the southeastern part of Clark County, Nev. It is covered by a group of eight claims that can be reached by turning south from U. S. Highway 91 at Riverside, Nev., and driving about 12.6 miles southeast over a winding mountain road, which rises from about 3,000 feet to 4,000 feet in elevation. The climate is dry, with only a small amount of rainfall throughout the year. The temperature ranges from hot during the summer to short periods of freezing weather during the winter months. The vegetation is of the desert variety, and no timber is available for mining. Water for mining purposes would have to be pumped from lower areas. A granitoid gneiss comprises the largest part of the rock outcrops. It has a steeply dipping foliation that strikes about N. 75° E. The gneiss was intruded by basic dikes, which in turn were intruded by pegmatite dikes. The ore occurs as lenticular bodies formed by the convergence of several pegmatite dikes within the main dike. The principal sulfide minerals are pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite, which contain a small amount of nickel. Late in the year of 1939, the Bureau of Mines undertook an exploration project on the Great Eastern property to extend or delimit the known mineralization. Underground work, consisting of 590 feet of drifting and crosscutting, was completed in September 1940, and 1,091 feet of diamond, drilling for downward extension of an ore body in the Lower edit, which was completed in February 1941.

[Iron oxides, when reduced at temperatures below 900° form a dark gray substance, very porous bait otherwise in almost the same form as the original particles. In the temperature ire range of 1,000 to 1,100° the product is pertly sintered but still shows the outlines of the original particles. Those products are known as "sponge iron." At temperatures of 1,100 to 1,2000 the metallic iron begins to flow together and to a semifused, pasty, porous mass called a "bloom," which can he worked under a hammer to form a product similar to wrought iron; it contains slag inclusions and is too low in carbon to make steel. If the temperature is 1,300 to 1,300°, part of the iron will fuse enough to absorb more carbon. The dissolved carbon lowers the melting point and still more carbon is absorbed. The melted portion acts a flux for the unmelted metallic particles until the entire mass becomes a high-carbon fluid known as "cast iron." Sponge iron was probably the form in which the first iron was recovered from the ores. As early as the eighth century the Catlan forge3 developed into a low-shaft furnace known as the "high bloomary," in which iron eras produced in the form of a pasty mass. In 1340 the first blast furnace was built in Belgium. The greater part of the iron was made into wrought-iron blooms by crude puddling processes. Charcoal was used as the fuel until tie latter part of the 17th century when coke was used in England. In 1865 Bessemer built his first converter in. England, and within a few years the Siemen's regenerative open-hearth furnace was developed, also in England. Enormous expansion in the metallurgy of iron followed. The idea of "direct processes" for the production of iron arid steel has persisted throughout all this time. The production of steel from sponge iron has theoretical advantages over the present-day standard methods, and handreds of so--called "direct processes" have been proposed or tried during the past century.4]

HELIUM SHIPMENTS in 1964 exceeded the volume shipped during the previous year for the 15th successive time. Shipments from Bureau of Mines helium plants were 667.4 million cubic feet,2 about 6 percent more than in 1963. Production at Bureau of Mines plants totaled 784.5 million cubic feet. An additional 3,193.1 million cubic feet, which was produced by private companies participating in the helium conservation program, was purchased by the Bureau and stored underground for future use. The Bureau of Mines continued to sell helium at $35 a thousand cubic feet, the price established in 1961. Substantial railway freight rate reductions for tank car shipments of helium went into effect during the year, resulting in a lower delivered price for helium. As the Nation moved ahead in the space age, it became increasingly apparent that helium would continue to play an essential role in research, in technology, in defense, and in industry.

For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has conducted semi-annual survey to determine the changes in the characteristics of the rotor gasoline being sold in the United States. Certain cities have been decided upon as points of origin of samples. Tare choice of these cities has been governed by their situation as the representative of a more or less definitely bounded marketing territory. Samples have been taken on or about the fifteenth day of January and July of each year. In the collection of the samples an attempt has been made to get a representation of the important types of motor fuel being sold, and also to tame into consideration the proportion of tie total consumption that is supplied by the different marketers. It is therefore felt that the survey affords a reliable indication of the quality of the gasoline being sold throughout the United States at the time of sampling. The figures in Table I, below, were obtained by averaging the end points of the least volatile and most volatile samples of gasoline. For example, of 850 samples analyzed in 1919, the 10 per cent (85 samples) having the highest end points, and the 1C per cent having the lowest end points were averaged. These averages are represented in the table as the "Maximum 10 per cent" and the "Minimum 10 per cent", respectively. The same scheme was used in the succeeding surveys.

A new post-disaster signalling system for the Bureau o Mines, using through-the-earth EM propagation, was successfully field-tested in the Lake Lynn test mine. Successful detection at an estimated input SNR of -30dB was accomplished using a coherent integration time of 4.46 minutes. The transmitted waveform consisted of a repeating pseudonoise maximal length sequence phase modulating a 1950Hz carrier. The receiver used a sliding-window matched filter, optimal for signal known exactly except for phase and starting time, implemented via a special purpose processor. Parallel processing permits adaptive signalling, where the detection (integration) time is determined by the actual input SNR encountered. This field test demonstrates a trapped miner detection system that is about 36dB more sensitive than a current pulsed system. This increased sensitivity permits some desired combination of increased range, shorter detection time, and reduced transmitter power or antenna-size. The combination of pulse-compression-type-signal, coherent integration, parallel-processing, and output peak-detection algorithms permit implemention of an ultra-reliable detection system. The same combination is compatible with digital Pulse Position Modulation and Emitter position location strategies.

Freezing to dewater typical Florida phosphate rock slime as demonstrated in laboratory tests appeared to have potential commercial use because of indicated moderate energy requirements, good compaction of dewatered solids, and effective recovery of usable water. After freezing, thawing, decanting, and filtering, batch freezing of gallon-size 13.7 percent solids slime samples yielded 42 percent solids products. Cationic amine, used as a process additive, yielded 46.8 percent solids product with significant filter area reduction. Semicontinuous 8 stage freezing tests also produced thickened slimes. Cooling and freezing 13.7 percent solids slime from 30° to minus 10° C required removal of 183 Btu per pound of slime; Carnot cycle calculation indicated that the theoretical minimum energy to transfer this heat was 27.8 Btu per pound. To produce 1 ton of 44 percent solids slime from 13.7 percent sol-ids slime, the calculated theoretical energy required for cooling and freezing was 52.3 kilowatt-hours. During the research heat capacity and heat of fusion data were determined for the slime at various percent solids.

A report on location, sampling, assays, mineral examination, amenability leach tests, and evaluation of certain mine dumps in Mohave County, Arizona. Extractions of greater than 30 percent of the gold and silver were achieved during simulated heap leaching of selected mine dump material. Consumption of reagents was relatively low and results suggest leaching of prepared heaps is technically viable and could be economically attractive.
