This Bureau of Mines report describes calcination of kaolinitic clay in a direct-fired 2-1/2- by 24-ft rotary kiln at 750° and 775° C. Methods for preparing kaolin feed materials and characterization of calcined products are discussed. Approximately 99 pct of the alumina in a typical eastern Georgia kaolin was soluble in HC1 after calcination at either 750° or 775° C.

The Federal Bureau of Mines, under a contract with Ultrasystems, Inc., investigated the thermal oxidative degradation characteristics of conveyor belts used in underground mines. This included the determination of smoke evolution, glow characteristics, char yields, and the identification and quantification of all volatile decomposition products in the form of gram of specific product formed per gram of belt sample tested. In addition to these investigations, degradation studies were conducted on some pure ingredients used in conveyor-belt formulations. Three basic classes of belts were investigated: neoprene, polyvinyl chloride, and styrene-butadiene rubber compositions. The studies indicate that styrene-butadiene-based belts exhibit good flame resistance and are the least hazardous in regard to overall formation of toxic decomposition products. Under this program, thermogravimetric analysis was definitely established as a method of material differentiation.

The development and use of rock mass classification tools have been a key component for improving stope design over the past 4 years at the Xstrata Zinc George Fisher Mine in northern Queensland, Australia. In 2003, stope extraction data from 3 years of open-stope mining provided an excellent situation to review the assumptions in the feasibility study. Extracted stope profile information, drillhole geotechnical data, underground observations, and oral and written communication were used to develop a thorough stope reconciliation performance database. With-out collecting the back analysis data and presenting the data in a usable format, engineers are left to debate opinion instead of engineered judgment. This can lead to biased and uninformed design parameter choices with the potential to repeat poor design. This paper demonstrates some effective, practical examples of empirical data collection where rock mass classifications tools were developed and used to create improved confidence in predicting stope stability and failure profiles. The work contributed to design changes that resulted in a reduction in stope hangingwall dilution and an increase in head grade while continuing to ramp up production from 2003–2005.

A power-line proximity-warning (PLPW) system must have a high probability of detection (alarm activation at a specific distance), low probability of false alarm, and minimal set-up and maintenance. Tests of electric-field sensors have not demonstrated a dependable alarm distance. Alternative sensing methods such as microwave radar, optical radar, and sonar can meet the requirements by direct measurement of the range from the boom to the power line. Suitable microwave techniques include RF pulse, chirp FM/CW, and baseband pulse. Baseband-pulse radar has adequate range capability and does not require expensive microwave components. The radar cross section of a power-transmission cable is adequate for its detection optical-radar systems based upon LEDs and photodiodes are inexpensive, but can achieve only marginal performance in this application because of their limited modulation bandwidth. Since laser diodes and cryogenically cooled photosensors must be used to achieve the desired range resolution, the cost of an optical-radar system is greater than that of a microwave radar system. Sonar systems are feasible, but are not as precise and cost at least as much as baseband-pulse-radar systems. The performance of both optical-radar and sonar systems is degraded by dirt, necessitating the inclusion of a "windshield wiper.' Baseband radar appears well suited to the PLPW application. The cost of a baseband-pulse radar PLPW system is expected to be comparable to that of an electric-field PLPW system. Development and testing of an experimental model are therefore recommended.

"SUMMARYA preliminary examination of the Buena Vista iron deposit was made in June 1942 by Paul E. Pesonen, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines. Subsequent examinations were made by D. W. Butner, of the Bureau, in March 1943, and by the author in July 1944, who recommended exploration by diamond drilling, trenching, and sampling. Work on the project was done during the period March 28 to May 26, 1945.Property holdings, comprising 16 claims known as the Buena Vista group, are situated in sec. 4, T. 24 N., R. 34 E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, north Churchill County, about 37 miles east of Lovelock, Nev.Three diamond-drill holes totaling 575 feet were drilled; 45 small pits and ten trenches, totaling 435 linear feet, were excavated, and 84 channel samples totaling 862 feet were obtained under supervision of the Bureau.Purpose of the project was to determine the possible downward extension of the mineralized sections exposed in the outcrops and to determine grade of the ore.Bureau work was confined to one claim only - the Iron Mountain."

The work described in this report was part of a Bureau of Mines program to appraise the titanium-mineral resources of Idaho. Part of the program included churn drilling of alluvial deposits that previous preliminary testing, primarily for rare minerals, had indicated to be potential sources of titanium minerals. The first spot churn drilling began in the Deadwood placer area, Valley County, Idaho, in July 1956 to determine both the amount and grade of the ilmenite, FeTi03. Ten holes, ranging in depth from 6 to 40 feet and aggregating 251 feet, were drilled; 54 samples were taken. The samples were sent to the Spokane field laboratory for concentration and visual estimation of the amounts of the more common minerals in the heavy sand concentrates. For specific determinations samples from each drill hole were composited and shipped to the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Albany, Oreg., where petrographic, quantitative X-ray spectrographic, and chemical analyses were made.

GLOSSARY Acid- and toxic-forming materials. Rock or coal layers containing significant amounts of pyrite or other minerals which, if exposed by coal mining, will cause acid or toxic drainage to occur when acted upon by air and water. Add mine drainage. Any water with a pH less s than 6.0 draining from a coal mine. Water is often orange-colored because of the presence of oxidized iron. Adit. An underground mine entry at sites where coal seams are exposed at ground level. Apple core. A complete hilltop (360°) left exposed by not backfilling the highwall. Approximate original contour. The surface configuration achieved by backfilling and grading the mined area so that be reclaimed land closely resembles the general pre-mining surface configuration and blends into and complements the drainage pattern of the surrounding terrain. Area mining. A surface mining method that is carried on in level to gently rolling topography on relatively large tracts of land. Active area mine pits may be several miles long. Arid and semiarid regions. Lands, generally west t of We 100% meridian, where water use by native vegetation equals or exceeds that supplied by natural precipitation, and rainfall is insufficient to support agriculture. Annual precipitation is normally 20 inches or less. Auger mining. A mining technique often used by surface mine operators when the overburden becomes too for the coal to be mined economically using traditional surface mining methods. Large-diameter (usually 2'-4') horizontal holes are drilled as much as 300 feet into We vertical Me of the coal bed by an auger. Like a bit used for boring holes in wood, coal augers consist of a cutting head with a screw-like extension. As the auger turns, the head breaks up the coal and the screw carries it back into a conveyor that loads it directly into a truck. Backfilling. The operation of refilling an excavation using material removed during the mining process. Bench. The level or flat working area at the base of the highwall that is excavated between the exposed coal seam and the original surface of the ground. Bucket wheel excavator. A continuous-digging machine that uses a rotating vertical wheel with buckets for large-scale stripping and excavating. Cessation Order. Order to cease mining issued to a coal operator by the regulatory authority due to severity of violations, Contemporaneous reclamation. Restoration of mined land that occurs as soon as practical after coal removal. Contour mining. A mining method commonly used in eastern mountainous topography where coal is removed in a narrow strip around the hillside. The extent of the cut into the hillside is determined by the depth of overburden at the highwall compared with the thickness of the coal seam. Daylighting. A term used to describe a surface mining procedure that exposes abandoned underground coal mine workings to enable removal of the remaining coal. Daylighting is followed by land reclamation. Dragline. An excavating machine, usually used in large, flat areas, that drags a bucket (which holds up to 220 cubic yards of material) toward the machine by cables, loads it with spoil, and then hoists it wit a boom up to 350 feet long, allowing the machine to excavate wide benches by depositing the spoil hundreds of feet away from the highwall. Grading. The process of smoothing the disturbed areas of the mine site, after the coal is removed, to closely approximate the pre¬mining terrain. Haul road. Any road constructed, improved, maintained, or used by mine operators and located within the permit area. Head-of-hollow fill. See "valley rill." Highwall. The cliff-like excavated face of exposed overburden and coal in a surface mine. Hydroseeding. Planting of seed mixed in a water medium. Water, mulch, lime, fertilizer, and seed are blended and sprayed onto regarded soil.

In this Bureau of Mines report a selection process has identified 14 nonstockpiled materials (cesium, gallium, hafnium, indium, osmium, rhenium, rhodium, rubidium, ruthenium, scandium, selenium, tellurium, thallium, and zirconium) that are linked to the continuing evolution of high-technology fields such as electronics, catalysis, and energy, and that have limiting factors associated with domestic availability. A qualitative assessment of the "potential criticality" of these materials was made through a consideration of end uses, demand trends and forecasts, production, mineral reserves, byproduct status, alternative supply sources, substitution and conservation options, and recyclability.

The Bureau of Mines conducted large-scale laboratory copper ore leaching tests to enable improving copper recovery from large dump-leaching operations. This was done by comparing leaching progress when copper was recovered from recycled leach liquor either by cementation or by solvent extraction. Copper was leached from 7-ton ore samples at room temperature using pH 2 ferric sulfate solutions. With are samples containing 11 percent minus 0.5-inch fines, no marked advantage in using either of the copper recovery methods was evident after 416 days of leaching. With ore containing 32 percent minus 0.5-inch fines, solvent extraction of copper was advantageous in that 60 percent of the copper was extracted after 568 days, whereas only 48 percent of the copper was extracted when cementation was used. Less acid was consumed during leaching when solvent extraction, rather than cementation, was used for copper recovery. Iron, contributed by cementation with scrap iron, plugged the ore bed containing 32 percent fines.

EXPLOSIVES RESEARCH. As the physical laboratories of the explosives section of the Pitts- burgh experiment station were equipped for testing the physical properties of explosives, both the Army and Navy Departments for many years had requested the Bureau of Mines to make such tests. Chemical control of the physical tests through analyses, heat tests, analyses of gaseous products of combustion, and sand tests was exer- cised through the explosives chemical laboratory. Often an investigation was cooperative between two laboratories. The explosives chemical laboratory also aided the work of the Ex- plosives Regulation both by chemical tests and investigation of acci- dents in explosives plants. COOPERATIVE WORK FOR ARMY AND NAVY DEPARTMENTS. The explosives chemical laboratory devised, at the request of the Bureau of Ordnance of the Navy, a more economical method of making hexanitrodiphenylamine. This problem was assigned to the Bureau of Mines by Dr. C. E. Munroe, chairman of the committee on explosives of the National Research Council, acting as the depart- ment of science and research of the Council of National Defense. Before the United States entered the war the following reports of investigations were submitted to the Army or the Navy: 1. Report of sensitiveness and relative efficiency of TNT and ammonium picrate, dated February 6, 1913, undertaken at the re- quest of the Chief of Ordnance. 2. Report of tests and examination of two samples of TNT and one of TNA for the Ordnance Department of the Army, dated August 5, 1915, was undertaken at the request of commanding officer, Frankford Arsenal. 3. Report of tests for sensitiveness to detonation of mercury ful- minate of 21 samples of TNT crystallized from various solvents, for the Bureau of Ordnance, Navy Department, dated June 17, 1916. 4. Report of tests of two samples of mercury fulminate for Frank- ford Arsenal, dated December 2, 1916, undertaken at the request of the commanding officer, Frankford Arsenal. After the United States entered the war the following reports of investigations were submitted: 5. Report of pendulum friction and large impact tests on two samples of "sodatol" and two samples of "amatol." The final report was dated July 20, 1918; and the preliminary report, May 15, 1918. The Bureau of Mines recorded and analyzed overpressure levels for three production blasts at the White Pine copper mine, Upper Michigan, to obtain representative data from single-heading blasts in a long, straight haulageway and to estimate the damage potential inherent in production blasts fired in close proximity to underground structures. Commercial pressure gages with a flat response to 1 kHz were used with an FM tape recorder to record the overpressures from one dynamite and two AN-FO (ammonium nitrate-fuel oil), 500-msec production blasts having zero-delay charge weights of about 75 lb (34 kg). The recorded waveforms from the underground blasts (1) were more complex than the typical free-air wave, (2) were of longer duration, and (3) had numerous secondary arrivals due to reflections from the ribs and roof. The waveforms showed that the zero-delay charges produced the only high overpressures. First pulse peak overpressures from the blasts ranged from 0.10 lb/in2 (6.9 X 102 N/m2) at a distance of 471.1 ft (144 m) to a maximum of 1.76 lb/in2 (121.3 X 102 N/m2) at 191,7 ft (58.4m) from the blasts. An analysis of variance of the first pulse overpressures from the three White Pine blasts showed that no statistically significant difference existed among the overpressure levels from the dynamite and AN-FO blasts and that a single equation P = 4.9 x 103 (D /W1 / 3) 2 .15, where P = overpressure in pounds/inch2, D = d-stance from the blast in feet, and W = zero-delay charge weight in pounds, could be used to describe the falloff of overpressure with distance.

Marble is one of tile most beautiful and enduring materials employed in the construction industries. Because of its diverse colors, decorative patterns, and varying textures, it has furnished material for artistic architectural design for many centuries. The marble industry is described in some detail in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 106, The Technology of Marble Quarrying, which, unfortunately, is now out of print but may be consul ted at most large libraries. Onyx marble and travertine are discussed in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6751. The purpose of this paper is to describe the main features of a distinctive group of ornamental marbles known as the serpentine marbles or verde antiques.

This report is the fifth in a series presenting equilibrium vapor - liquid data for helium- bearing natural gases . It covers a 0.41 - mole - percent - helium natural gas that may be processed in the Department of the Interior's longrange helium conservation program . A Bureau of Mines phase equilibrium apparatus was used to obtain 139 samples of equilibrium vapor and liquid phases at 85 experimental conditions at temperatures from 0 ° to -299 ° F and at pressures from 100 to 500 psia . An appendix covers phase data at 100 , 200 , and 300 psia and at temperatures from -125 ° to -275 ° F for the dehydrated gas containing its original concentration ( 0.2 mole - percent ) of carbon dioxide , and the effect of a preliminary hydrocarbon trap upon subsequent vapor - liquid compositions .

Prolonged, extensive exposure to hand-transmitted vibration could cause a series of vibration-induced disorders in the vascular, sensorineural, and musculoskeletal structures of the human hand-arm system, which have been collectively called hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS).1 To assess the risk of HAVS the international standard ISO 5349-1 (2001)1 recommends using the root-mean-square (rms) acceleration of the measured vibration with a frequency weighting. While a few epidemiological studies have reported results consistent with the predictions made according to the recommendation, many other studies have reported results with large discrepancies.2 This may be partially attributed to the time-averaging effect involved in calculation of the frequency components, especially for impact type tools. Because the spectral characteristics of impact tools change dramatically with time, a time-frequency (T-F) analysis can provide better characterizations of such highly transient vibrations. The analytic wavelet transform (AWT) is an ideal T-F analysis tool because it possesses the advantages of both the Fourier transform and the wavelet transform.3 The objective of this study was to explore the application of the AWT method for characterizing the impact tool vibrations and assessing their exposure risk. Methods Five tools (two chipping hammers, two riveting hammers, and one concrete cutting saw) were used in this study. The saw vibration was measured when it was used to cut a section of road pavement during a repair. The vibrations on the other tools were measured by the procedure specified in ISO 8662-2 (1992).4 A sampling rate of 16,386 Hz was used in the measurement. The AWT and Fourier analysis were applied to these signals and to identify their characteristics. Results Figure 1 compares the T-F characteristics of the accelerations measured from the relatively steady concrete saw and a riveting hammer. The frequency weighting specified in ISO 5349-11 was applied in the calculations. The comparison clearly shows that the two tools have completely different T-F characteristics.

Industrial equipment exposes individuals to whole-body vibration (WBV) and mechanical shock. This exposure can negatively impact their health, safety, comfort, and working efficiency and performance. Accordingly, proper seat design is an important consideration in reducing the adverse effects of WBV exposure to vehicle operators. Since the human body is sensitive to low frequency WBV, ride quality is a basic and important element of good seat design. When designing a suitable seat, it is essential to understand vibration exposure environment of workers and how well they can tolerate this environment [1]. This is particularly true in the mining industry. Mayton et al. [2] reported on a low-coal shuttle car seat design that underwent limited, yet successful underground mine trials. Building on this work, a follow-up study compared NIOSH and existing seat designs on low- and mid-coal seam shuttle cars. The NIOSH seat designs included viscoelastic foam, which has properties similar to those found in a mechanical spring/damper suspension system. The seats also included an adjustable lumbar support and a fore-aft seat adjustment. The NIOSH seat designs contrast with the existing seat design, which have little or no lumbar support and include inexpensive foam padding of the type commonly used in furniture. This paper will focus on the seat designs for the mid-coal seam shuttle car and compare subjective comfort data collected from five vehicle operators with ISO 2631 – based reduced comfort boundary (RCB) analysis of recorded vibration levels. Methods Experimental data were collected using three different tools: triaxial accelerometers, pre-amplifiers, and filters connected to a data recorder; a visual analog scale (VAS); and a short questionnaire. Researchers recorded quantitative or objective vehicle vibration data to determine the input and output acceleration at the operator cab floor and operator seat interface. Qualitative or subjective data, collected with the VAS, allowed researchers to obtain the operators’ immediate impressions of shock, vibration, and discomfort levels for the vehicle ride on each of the seat designs. Each shuttle car operator made six round trips with the vehicle each seat. The shuttle car operator marked the VAS on the first, third, and sixth round trip of the trials for each seat. A round trip consisted of traveling to the coal face with no load and returning to the load discharge location with a full load of coal. Results Total overall average ratings for the five vehicle operators of the mid-coal seam shuttle car, showed that operators sensed from 45 to 87% less discomfort with NIOSH seat designs compared to the existing seat design. Using a 95% CI, researchers computed a strong positive correlation for discomfort. Figure 1 illustrates the RCB analysis method for one of two NIOSH seat designs.

"INTRODUCTION The Miscellaneous Minerals Division of the War Production Board requested the Bureau of Mines to investigate the Gallatin corundum property as a possible source of corundum, which was in short supply due to the war. The Gallatin corundum property, also known as the ""Fuller mine"", the ""Montana Corundum mine"", and as the ""Old Qorundum mine"" was first examined by a Bureau of Mines engineer 2/ in July 1943. Bureau of Mines work on the property started October 11, 1943, was recessed May 5, 1944, and was resumed in October 1944 when the diamond-drilling program started. The project was completed February 7, 1945. The data obtained are given in this report.The Federal Geological Survey made a reconnaissance survey in the spring of 1943 and mapped the area the following autumn. The results of these surveys are contained in a memorandum report prepared in December 1943.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Electrorefined vanadium with additions of up to 5 percent by weight of yttrium, cerium , lanthanum , praseodymium, neodymium, and samarium was melted to ingots in a nonconsumable electrode arc in a helium atmosphere . The ingots were rolled into strips and evaluated for the effect of the alloying elements on hardness , tensile strength , ductility , recrystallization temperature , and microstructure . Except for samarium , average additions of alloying elements of 1 to 2 weight - percent resulted in the retention of 0.12 to 1.05 weight - percent in the alloys and reduced the ultimate tensile strength from about 48,000 to approximately 30,600 psi . The corresponding yield stress (0.2 percent offset ) was reduced from about 40,700 to approximately 20 , 200 psi . Diamond pyramid hardness (DPH) was reduced from 117 to an average of 62 kg /mm² . Increased malleability at room temperature resulted with yttrium and all rare - earth- metal additions , except samarium , particularly with more than 0.25 weight - percent additions . Decreasing oxygen contents corresponded with the changes noted in the mechanical properties of the alloys . The recrystallization temperature of electrorefined vanadium was reduced from approximately 950 ° to 800 ° C. Yttrium or a rare- earth metal content , except samarium , in excess of 0.1 weight - percent in vanadium produced a second phase suggestive of an eutectic which indicated a possible maximum solubility of less than 0.1 weight - percent for both room and elevated temperatures .

The results of tests on oxidized lead ores from two properties are reported in this paper. The investigation was on a small laboratory scale only; no pilot-plant tests were made. One sample, from the Magajupa Mining Co., near Duenweg, No., contained coarsely crystalline and disseminated galena and cerussite, so both tabling and flotation were considered in the beneficiation. By this treatment of an ore containing 11.5 percent lead, a recovery of 79.5 percent of the lead was made in a concentrate containing 73.3 percent lead.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a field study to assess the performance of various chain pillar configurations in terms of gate road entry sta-bility. Vibrating wire stressmeters (VWS's) were installed in four consecutive gate road chain pillars. Field data collected during panel retreat were analyzed to gain a better understanding of the mechanics of vertical load redistribution in gate road chain pillars as it relates to ground control problems.
