In 1987, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management~ the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 7,600 and 3,000 acres, respectively, of the Slocum Creek (OR-003-075) and Upper Leslie Gulch (OR-003-074) Wilderness Study Areas in order to evaluate their mineral resources. They are located in Malheur County, OR, about 25 mi northwest of Jordan Valley. Both areas have an occurrence of stone (welded tuff) covering about 3,000 acres which is suitable for construction purposes including road metal, ballast, and road fill. However, similiar deposits are more accessible and closer to markets.

The mineral industry in Burundi was a minor contributor to the country's gross domestic product (GDP), which was estimated at just $1 billion for 19812. Coffee and tea continued as the Nation's major export commodities. Mineral exports consisted of small tonnages of wolframite, cassiterite, and baetnasite. Burundi's trade balance of payments situation worsened in 1981, with import payments more than double export revenues. Petroleum imports alone equaled 46% of the export revenue total. By year-end, the only indigenous fossil fuel source to have been found in Burundi was peat, which the Government had been attempting to develop to alleviate some of the petroleum import requirements. In June 1981 the Irish Peat Development Authority, Bord na Mona, signed a 4-year contract with the Burundian Government to supply technical staff for the ongoing peat project work there. Funding for the project was provided by the VS. Agency for International Development and the Government of Ireland. The new contract, which was an extension of ongoing peat research there, represented Burundi's increased awareness of the value of its large peat reserves for both energy and agricultural uses. At yearend, Burundi's Ministry of Public Works and Mines was does to selecting a contractor to study the feasibility of developing Burundi's phosphate deposits. The study would determine the potential for establishing fertilizer production facilities based on the country's phosphate reserves at Matongo-Bandaga, The study's specific objectives are to prove mineral reserve tonnage and grade, draw up mining and processing facility designs, estimate capital and production costs, and conduct a regional market and distribution survey. The cost of the study was estimated at slightly over $1 million, and it should take approximately 16 months to complete. The proposed project will mark the Burundian Government's first step in its plan to exploit on a large scale its natural mineral resources for advancing its agriculture-based economy. This report includes data for 1962 on injury experience, with related employment statistics, at coal mines in the United States. These data are presented in tabular form under the following: General Injury Experience Tables 1 to 6: Current data on number of injuries, degree of injury, frequency and severity rates, average severity, and related employment and production data by work location.

The increasing concern for dust control in metal and nonmetal mining prompted the Bureau of Mines to investigate the dust suppression technique of applying foam to face drilling and crushing operations in a gypsum mine. Previous attempts to achieve effective dust control on face drills using other techniques, such as dry collection and boom-mounted external water sprays, have not been successful. The largest problem encountered when using these techniques has been the lack of sustained effective dust capture at the face. Results for two faces studied show that injection of the foam through the drill steel provided an average dust reduction of 95 pct. However, the use of foam on the crusher provided no dust reduction at the operator's position (because of good local ventilation) and a 27-pct average dust reduction for two feeders at a location midway between the operator's position and the crusher. The conclusions obtained from this study are that (1) foam can be an extremely effective dust control technique when used on localized dust sources such as dust generated within a blasthole during drilling, and (2) foam is only marginally effective as a dust control technique when used on nonlocalized dust sources such as dust generated during the feeder-and-crusher operation.

Two underground installations of the sprayfan system are described and evaluated. The spray fan proves capable of reducing by 1300 percent downtime due to high methane. Spray fan face ventilation at 20 ft brattice setback is shown to give improved methane control over conventional sprays at 10 ft setback. In addition, this report describes: ? A simple method for determining the most economical application of ventilation for face methane control ? The effect of place variables (primary ventilation, auxiliary ventilation, seam height, etc.) on methane concentrations ? The correlation of methane concentrations with brattice setback. These results are utilized to suggest a safer and more economical approach to face methane control.

Burundi, a small central African republic located between Tanzania and Zaire, remained essentially a nation of small family farms in 1978-79 with approximately 95% of the population engaged in subsistance agriculture. Coffee and tea continued as the nation's major export commodities. Mineral exports, small tonnages of cassiterite, wolframite and bastnasite, accounted for an estimated 3% of total exports in 1978 and 2% in 1979, or $2 million2 in both years. Burundi's major mineral imports in 1978-79 were cement, iron and steel, and refined petroleum products. Abnormal weather conditions, a drop in world coffee prices in 1978, and the conflict in neighboring Tanzania and Uganda in late 1978 and early 1979 combined to re-strict economic growth in Burundi during 1978-79. The gross domestic product (GDP) posted a gain of 6.7% in real terms for 1978 and an estimated 2.5% for 1979 which was significantly less than the 13.7% recorded in 1977, a time of high world coffee prices. The manufacturing and construction sectors were hard hit in 1979 by the conflict between Burundi's eastern neighbors because of transport disruptions which made building materials and manufacturing inputs almost unobtainable.

A unique machine for inducing bending fatigue in wire ropes was built at the U.S. Bureau of Mines' Pittsburgh Research Center. This machine can produce nine levels of degradation through repetitive cycling of long samples of wire ropes of the types used in the mining industry. This report provides an analysis of the results of the first wire rope to be fatigued on this machine. These results have indicated that as a wire rope accumulates bending cycles, its strength first decreases because of wear and then in-creases due to cold working of the wires. As the amount of cold working increases, more and more of the embrittled wires break and the strength of the rope decreases rapidly. In this test, application of several of the regulatory retirement criteria to various sections of the rope suggests that there may be some inconsistency among them.

The method for predicting coke strength developed at Steinkohlenberg-bauverein, Germany, in which experimental parameters are readily determined by small-scale laboratory tests, was found to be applicable to cokes produced from industrially used blends of American coals. Predicted 1-inch ASTM tumbler indices for four industrial blends were found to be in excellent agreement with the experimentally determined values. The laboratory determined prediction parameters include the proximate analysis of the coal the size consist of the coal, and Ruhr dilatometer test data.

Technology to enhance safety during mine hoisting has been developed by researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Assessment of current hoisting technology suggests that monitoring conveyance position and load directly from the skip or cage top offers several significant safety advantages. Wireless data transmission schemes and a package consisting of sensors, batteries, and a charger mounted on the wire rope and skip have been developed. A state-of-the-art automated hoisting test facility was constructed to test the concept in a controlled laboratory setting. Field tests in a fill-size shaft are underway.

Quickly and cheaply consolidate underground slimes to facilitate their use as backfill and permit their easy handling for other reasons. Approach: The slurry containing slimes is pumped into active stopes and electrokinetically dewatered to provide consolidated back fill. How It Works: To densify slimes electro-kinetically two electrodes are placed in the material to be dewatered and densified. Typically, the electrodes are pieces of wire mesh fencing. One is placed on the bottom, and the other is suspended in the slurry near the surface. Figure 1 is a simplified section of a test. A d-c voltage of 100 to 400 volts is applied across the slurry. This causes the solid particles which are in suspension in the water (usually these are negatively charged) to migrate toward the anode; simultaneously, the water moves toward the cathode. Water immediately adjacent to the negatively charged solid particle surfaces contains an excess of dissolved positive ions. Applicability of the fluosilicate sintering process to recovering beryllium from beryl-spodumene concentrate analyzing 1.4 to 3.7 percent BeO (10 to 30 percent beryl) was investigated. The work was one phase of a Bureau of Mines research program undertaken to assess applicability of conventional processes and to devise new procedures for treating various potential beryllium feed materials. Beryllium recovery of about 70 percent in a product of 99-percent BeO grade was achieved in treating 3D-percent beryl concentrate. The process consisted of (1) sintering a briquetted charge of concentrate, soda ash, and sodium fluosilicate for 3 hours at 750° C.; (2) extracting the soluble beryllium by multiple stages of water leaching; (3) adding caustic to the leach solution and boiling to hydrolyze and precipitate crude beryllium hydroxide; (4) dissolving the crude beryllium hydroxide in sulfuric acid and separating the solution from undissolved silica; (5) sulfidizing the acid beryllium solution to precipitate heavy metal impurities; (6) adding ammonia to the clarified sulfate solution to precipitate beryllium hydroxide; and (7) converting the hydroxide to beryllium oxide (beryllia) by calcining at 900° C. About 60 percent more sodium fluoSilicate was required per unit of beryl than is used industrially in treating 10-to 12-percent BeO concentrate (80 to 90 percent beryl). Recovery decreased, and flux requirements increased, when treating concentrates containing less beryl.

As part of the current research effort in shale-oil chemistry conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines, reduced chlorophyllins were prepared and pyrolyzed in an effort to identify the role of plant pigments and their decomposition products in the nitrogenous compounds found in the product of oil-shale pyrolysis. The properties of the chlorophyllin pyrolysates were related to the composition of the reduced chlorophyllins with particular emphasis on the amount and types of nitrogen compounds formed. A comparison based on the types of nitrogen compounds present was made betvJeen shale oil and the chlorophyll in pyrolsates. In order to make this comparison, a sample of shale-oil light distillate was separated into polar and nonpolar fractions, and a careful examination of the polar fraction was conducted to obtain an accurate picture of the types of nitrogen compounds present. The information gathered from these studies was used to evaluate reduced chlorophyllin as a model of oil-shale kerogen insofar as the production of nitrogen compounds was concerned. The results indicate that the reduced chlorophyllin does yield nitrogen products which are directly related to the nitrogenous compounds in shale oil, and it therefore represents a good model of shale-oil kerogen.

In 1989 and 1990, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 122,000-acre Trinities study area, located in the Trinity Mountains of south-central Idaho. No identified mineral resources were delineated during this study. There are 58 lode mining claims within the area. Five localities contained elevated metal concentrations which may indicate precious metal mineralization at four localities and molybdenum-precious metal mineralization at another. Four of the five localities appear to form a northwest trend through the center of the study area. Twenty-eight individual sites contain anomalous concentrations of gold, silver, bismuth, molybdenum, and beryllium.

The washability examination of a coal establishes the quality of the product that could be prepared by mechanical cleaning, shows how much impurity would have to be eliminated to attain a particular quality of product, indicates what type of cleaning process would be suitable, and tells whether the coal could be cleaned efficiently, The coal-preparation laboratories of the Bureau of Mines make washability examinations of coal for a variety of purposes. Sometimes these examinations are made as an integral part of research conducted on coal-washing problems. Occasionally they are made on coals mined on Government-owned land or on coals destined for use in Government installations. Often they are made on coals from new fields or new beds in existing fields to help establish the characteristics of the Nation's coal reserves. Whatever the original reason for doing the work, the results often are useful later in evaluating deposits or in the design of cleaning plants. Publication of the results of such studies provides for the widest possible usefulness. This report brings together the results of washability examinations made on 1 coal each from Oregon and Idaho, 2 from Wyoming, 5 from Utah, and 11 from Washington. Material of this nature is inherently difficult to summarize. Some of the coals are so clean} despite full-scam mechanical mining, that they could not be improved materially by washing; others present some of the most difficult preparation problems found in the country.

This study focused on the chemical reactions between uranium tailings fluids and cores of subjacent bedrock from the site of the Cotter Corporation uranium mill at Canon City, Colorado. Actual and synthetic tailings fluids were forced through cores of bedrock. The pH of the effluent solutions was the dominant control on the behavior of dissolved species in solution. The pH depended on the presence or absence of calcite cement in the rocks. Calcite neutralized acidic raffinates and caused the precipitation of iron, manganese, aluminum, and possibly uranium. Chloride, sulfate, and sodium were not retarded upon passage through the cores, and sulfate and chloride should be useful as tracers of escaping tailings fluids. Zinc, copper, cobalt, nickel, uranium, and vanadium exhibited high mobility under acidic conditions and were strongly retarded at elevated pH. Calcium was released due to dissolution of calcite and ion-exchange. Magnesium was not retarded in concentrated solutions, but showed moderate retardation in dilute fluids. Potassium and ammonium both showed early retardation followed by breakthrough and mobility. The behavior of molybdenum was strongly dependent on pH, with retardation at low pH and mobility at elevated pH. Selenium was highly mobile under all conditions. Selenium should be a better tracer than molybdenum for many situations. Precipitation of carnotite appears to control the solubility of uranium and, possibly, vanadium. With the exception of the precipitation of aluminum and silica, all reactions were rapid.

A survey of endomycorrhizal fungi occurring on orphan coalmine lands in Western and Eastern Kentucky revealed a great diversity of species present. Thus a large number of fungi are available for isolation and evalution for enhancing revegetation of mined land. Endomycorrhizal fungi isolated from orphan mines stimulated growth of sweetgum seedlings on mine soil at low fertilisation but inhibited growth at high fertilization; this growth inhibition at high fertilization did not occur with plants growing on peat-perlite. Banding of endomycorrbizal inoculum was not advantageous, compared with incorporation of inoculum throughout the growth medium, for production of mycorrhizal sweetgum seedlings. Newly reclaimed mine spoils were nearly nonmycorrhizal, compared with land reclaimed four or eight years earlier. A procedure for isolation of single-spore cultures of endomycorrhizal fungi was developed; this procedure is necessary for studies of ecotypic variability. A practical procedure using container-grown Pisolithus tinctorius-infected shortleaf pine seedlings for production of large numbers of bareroot pine seedlings infected with P. tinctorius for mined land reclamation was demonstrated.

The production of crude mineral commodities in Bangladesh was limited to natural gas, a small amount of construction materials, and clay for ceramics and bricks. No metallic minerals were mined. The only mineral commodity of economic significance was natural gas. Natural gas production has 'been climbing steadily and becoming an increasingly important source of energy for the country. Proved gas reserves were over 4.5 trillion cubic feet, but the amount has been increasing as exploration discovers large new deposits. Some sources quote reserves at over 10 trillion cubic feet.
