An instrumentation and numeric modeling study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the Magmont Mine in Bixby, MO. An isolated section of this room-and-pillar mine was monitored with borehole and closure extensometers during a pillar recovery program to determine stress redistribution. In situ stress measurements were taken in the rib before pillar extraction began. Sample cores from the boreholes were taken for analysis of the properties of the host rock in the laboratory. The extensometers recorded no measurable displacements during most of the operation. Two-dimensional, finite-element; three-dimensional, finite-element; and three-dimensional displace-ment discontinuity codes were used to model the area of study. The finite-element models were run with two initial stress conditions, i.e., stress due to gravity only and stress obtained by in situ measurements. Horizontal stresses in the models reduced the calculated factor-of-safety in the mine back by up to a factor of 10, but did not have a significant effect on calculated pillar stability.

FOLLOWING the rapid recovery of previous years, the U.S. economy continued the upward trend and moved forward moderately and sporadically during the first half of 1962. There was a slow-down in the recovery rate, which was especially notable in the third quarter. The economy recovered in the fourth quarter, and by the end of 1962 the gross national product amounted to $555 billion, a new high, 7 percent above that of 1961. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all achieved new peaks, but unemployment continued high and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to us~ its full potential; 1962 was a good year, but not good enough. During 1962, all industrial production climbed from the low in January to a high in late summer which lasted through the fall, and declined slightly at yearend. Mining production followed this pattern closely and most sectors were approaching record highs. Most minerals gained in value and volume of production. The steel-associated minerals group was the only exception, and it sustained a small net loss. The nonfuel minerals industry opened the year at a high level, maintained this high level until late summer, with the peak in May, and drifted downward toward the end of the year. The gains recorded by nonferrous metal mining partly offset the loss of ferrous metal mining, resulting in a small gain for metal mining as a whole. The 1963 performance of the United States economy was impressive. The year was one of continued growth unmarred by a recession. By the end of 1963 the economy's expansion had already lasted almost as long as the 1954-57 upswing, and the net gain in output since the trough in activity in early 1961 compared favorably with most earlier postwar cyclical advances. There was no indication of any slow- down at yearend. Both gross national product (GNP) and national income in 1963 were 5 percent higher than in the previous year. GNP totaled $584 billion, a gain of $28 billion over 1962. Real output of goods and services rose 3.4 percent over the year. Price increases continued to be moderate. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all registered new but unemployment continued high at 5.5 percent and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to use its full potential. Current value of mineral production kept pace with the economy. The constant dollar value of mineral production gained more than real GNP because of the relatively stable price of minerals. Mining production achieved a new high in 1963. Steel production totaled 110 million tons, 12 million tons above 1962, making 1963 the first 100- million-ton year since 1957 and lifting the steel-associated minerals group upward. The gain in ferrous metals mining was insufficient to compensate for the decline of nonferrous metals mining resulting in an insignificant decline in the metal mining total as a whole. In 1972, the Bureau of Mines developed a direct-method test for measuring the gas content of virgin coal core samples for coal mine health and safety considerations. Since that time, approximately 1,500 coal samples from more than 250 coalbeds in 17 States have been collected for gas content determination. The gas content data, when combined with geologic and engineering studies, can be used as a basis for a preliminary estimate of mine ventilation requirements, and to determine if methane drainage in advance of mining should be considered. The data are also critical in delineating coalbed methane resources and in utilization feasibility studies. This report makes the Bureau's extensive data base of gas content data more readily available to the coal and gas industries. The data are presented in tabular form, alphabetically by coalbed name and by State. The components of the total gas content (lost, desorbed, and residual gas) are given, Location (State and county), sample depth, coalbed or formation name, and coal rank are included for geographic and geologic identification.

Fiji has been an independent country within the British Commonwealth of Nations since 1970. It consists of an archipelago of more than 300 islands ranging from tiny coral atolls, cays, and rugged coral limestone islets, to the larger mountainous islands of Kandavu, Taveuni, Vanua Levu, and Viti Levu of volcanic origin. The islands of Fiji straddle the 1800 meridian about 1,800 kilometers south of the Equator in the part of the southern Pacific Ocean known as Melanesia. The production of gold and silver from the Emperor Mine at Vatukoula on the island of Viti Levu, the main island of Fiji, remained Fiji's only metallic mineral producer. Mining began at the Vatukoula site in 1933, producing 124 million troy ounces of gold and 147 thousand troy ounces of silver by yearend 1985.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of HCI concentration and solution temperature on the solubility and crystal form of the chlorides of Co, Mn, and Ni when sparged with HCI gas at temperatures of 20°, 40°, and 60° C. Increasing HCI concentration in solution caused the chlo-rides of Co, Mn, and Ni to crystallize (salt out) because of the common ion effect. The salting-out crystallization was most effective for NiCI2, which had a solubility of 0.7 pct at 20° C and maximum HCI concentration. COCl2 salted out to a minimum solubility of 9.4 pct at 20° C and 22 pct HCI concentration and increased in solubility at greater HCI concentrations because of the formation of chloride complexes. MnCl2 was intermediate in behavior. The effect of temperature on solubility was greatest for CoCl2 and least for NiCI2, 15 and 7 pct change, respectively, over the temperature range of 20° to 60° C. The salted-out chlorides of cobalt and nickel formed the hexahydrates and those of manganese formed the tetrahydrate in saturated metal chlo-ride solutions at 20° C and low concentrations of HCI. Increasing the temperature or the HCI concentration caused a 108s in waters of hydra-tion. At 60° C, the salted-out crystals of NiCl2 formed the tetrahydrate in HCI concentrations up to 18 pct and the dihydrate at higher concentrations, while cobalt and manganese chlorides formed the dihydrates, even in water.

The highly-mineralized 43,700-ha Rapid River study area, on the southeast side of Hells Canyon Wilderness and west of the village of Cuprum, in Adams County, western-Idaho, was investigated in 1992 by the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) in conjunction with its Idaho Land Assessment Program. The 1992 study updated data gathered during the USBM's 1974-76 Wilderness investigation. The studies consisted of the evaluation of 61 mineralized sites and the estimations of tonnages, grades, and minability of these sites. Most of the sites studied are in two mineralized locales--Windy Ridge and Jackley Mountain. A few isolated sites, peripheral to the two locales, were also examined. The 61 sites contained more than 340 mine and prospect workings, including about 10,300 meters (34,000 feet) of underground workings, plus 134 drill holes.

The U.S. Department of Energy Pittsburgh Research Center2 conducted experiments with mine conveyor belt samples in a 20-L furnace and in a laboratory fire tunnel to measure and compare the major toxic gas concentrations evolved during the combustion of the materials. The toxic gas concentrations, measured simultaneously through a multiport sampling device and treated as yield values, included hydrogen chloride (HO), hydrogen cyanide (HeN), oxides of nitrogen (NO, treated as NO), and carbon monoxide (CO). The data obtained from the two experimental systems were in good agreement. Correlations were developed for the toxic gas yields as a function of the percentage of chlorine (for HO gas), nitrogen (for HCN and NO, gases), and carbon (for CO gas) contained in the original materials. The toxic gas yields were also used to calculate a toxicity index (TI) parameter to assess the potential gas toxicity of belt materials during a fire. Furthermore, the TI and the mass loss burning rate values were used to calculate a toxicity hazard (TH) parameter to estimate the toxic gas hazard produced by a burning belt in a ventilated system. Results show that polyvinyl chloride (PVC) belts released higher HC1 concentrations because of the higher chlorine content; styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) belts released higher CO, HCN, and NOz concentrations because of the higher carbon and nitrogen contents. The TI's, however, were greater for the PVC belts due primarily to the higher levels of HC1 produced. The fire tunnel data indicate that the SBR belts can bum with higher mass loss rates than the PVC belts, resulting in a potentially higher toxic hazard (higher TH values) even though their TI values were lower than those of the PVC belts.

This Bureau of Mines survey of methane emissions indicates that total daily emissions have declined from 227 MM ft3 in 1971 to 214.7 MM ft3 in 1973. The highest average daily emissions in million cubic feet per day observed in U.S. bituminous coal mines were, in decreasing order, Monongalia County, W. Va. , 40.7 ; Marion County, W. Va. , 23.1 ; Buchanan County, Va. , 22.1; Washington County, Pa., 12.4; Greene County, Pa., 11.7; McDowell County, W. Va. , 11.4; Cambria County, Pa., 9.8; Jefferson County, Ala. , 9.5; Wyoming County, W. Va., 6.0; Marshall County, W. Va., 4.8; and Indiana County, Pa., 4.8.

Field and laboratory data were used to evaluate sand from 13 dune locali­ties along the Oregon coast between Fort Stevens and Coos Bay. Chemical and glass button analyses were used to classify the 65 samples into two geographic zones of decreasing iron concentration. These data and data from preliminary magnetic beneficiation tests indicated that the sands between the Umpqua River and Coos Bay contained fewer impurities and were easier to beneficiate than those from areas between Fort Stevens and the Umpqua River, In addition, the dunes in the Umpqua River-Coos Bay area are the largest along the Oregon coast and are most favorably located with respect to existing transportation facilities, A composite sample from the Rogers area on the west bank of the North Slough of Coos Bay was selected for detailed mineral dressing studies. Splits from this sample were treated by various processes including magnetic separa­tion, electrostatic separation, flotation, and acid leaching, Concentrates were evaluated in glass melting tests. Test results indicated that high intensity magnetic separation followed by acid leaching would produce a prod­uct that could be used in amber and clear container glass batches. Good glass sand concentrates were also prepared by froth flotation; however, recovery was low and reagent costs excessive.

An evaluation was made to determine the economics of utilizing waste fluosilicic acid for production of (1) calcium fluoride, and (2) anhydrous hydro-gen fluoride. Two versions of each process were considered and compared. The evaluation showed that both products could be produced and marketed competitively. Lowest estimated product sales prices required to yield a 25-percent return on investment before taxes (discounted cash flow basis) was $339.34 per ton of hydrogen fluoride and $48.64 per ton of calcium fluoride.

The performance of Ecuador's mineral industry continued to be affected not only by depressed oil prices in recent years but also by natural disasters. In March 1987, Ecuador canceled foreign debt payments for the rest of the year and appealed for international aid because of a series of earth-quakes that destroyed villages and crippled the nation's oil industry. The earthquake destroyed a key section of the country's main oil pipeline and forced a halt to production and shipment of Ecuador's most important export product. Ecuador produces 240,000 barrels of oil per day and exports 144,000 barrels daily. Oil accounts for 60% of the nation's hard currency earnings. The Government of Ecuador asked the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and other oil-producing countries to assume Ecuador's oil sales commitments. Ecuador agreed to pay the countries back in an equivalent amount of oil when it was able to resume exports.

Because of the renewed importance of the strategic metal manganese the Bureau of Mines in conducting further research on pyrometallurgical methods of beneficiating manganiferous iron ores and low-grade manganese ores. Published data on the Pyrometallurgical of manganese ores have been reviewed by Joseph.5/ A method of treatment that has received less consideration than others is the matte smelting of manganese or the separation of manganese from the iron and the gangue in an ore b, formation of a matte, that consists principally of esulfide of manganese. A procedure of this type has been patented by Betts.6/ Lofquist7/ claims advantages for the production of a sulfide-oxide matte as a method of recovering manganese in alloys containing manganese and iron.

The continued worldwide shortage and strategic value of nickel place great importance upon the continued development and exploitation of new sources of nickel in the United States, The deposits of nickel-bearing minerals in Oregon and Washington have attracted considerable attention, particularly since the Hanna Development Co. has engaged in development work aimed at producing ferronickel from the Nickel Mountain deposit, near Riddle, Douglas County, Greg. The Red Flats nickel deposit in Curry County, Oreg., was first examined by the Bureau of Mines in dune 1945, but it was not until 1952 that the deposit was drilled and sampled. In 1953, a 15-ton sample of Red Flats material was procured and subjected to continuous smelting tests in the Bureau's Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Greg.

Coal-clay waste slurries were dewatered in laboratory-and small-scale continuous tests by the Bureau of Mines using polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a flocculant. Dewatering from a nominal 7-wt-pct solids to over 50-wt-pct solids was accomplished using 0.5 lb of PEO per ton of feed in small-scale continuous tests. Parameters such as pH, initial solids content, and PEO concentrations were investigated. Water recovered from dewatering was reused as dilutant for PEO solutions.

To allow the controlled yielding of mine walls in order to reduce rock-burst hazards and reduce maintenance caused by excessive squeezing forces. This device is an adoption of a concept originally developed in South Africa for use where unusually adverse conditions may warrant the added cost. How It Works A coupling in the rock bolt allows controlled elongation if the load increases beyond the bolt's design strength. (The load can build up either slowly, as during heaving, or rapidly, as before a rock burst.) The purpose of this US. Bureau of Mines study was to assess the ability of trainees to don an unfamiliar self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) after having become familiar with how to put on a different type of apparatus. Prepractice instruction was the same for all individuals learning to put on a device: a step-by-step, hands-on talk-through using the "3+3" method. Subjects were assigned to groups that had their initial donning instruction derivered on either the Draeger QXY-SR60B or the CSE SR-100. Trainees' performances were then evaluated using the other model. Donning trials were analyzed using a number of measures. It was found that SCSR design had a moderate influence upon how well the doming task transferred.

The modest mineral industry of Afghanistan continued to suffer adversely from internal disorders that were essentially the result of the continued presence of elements of the armed forces of the U.S.S.R. Despite press reports near yearend intimating that the Soviets might reduce troop strength in Afghanistan, there were no indications of any significant numeric reductions. Indeed, there were clear demonstrations of heightened military actions along the Afghani-Pakistani border, including bombing raids on settlement sites for Afghanis within the territorial limits of Pakistan, actions hardly demonstrative of conditions indicative of Soviet withdrawal.
